The magical moment when scared cat starts trusting you
Transcript
00:00 She was withdrawn and shy when she was deaf. I couldn't wait to take her home.
00:07 I'm Sarah. This is Polly's story for GeoBeats. She was this scrawny cat,
00:13 estimated to be 15. She had come from a hoarder house. She probably had lots of
00:21 kittens and just seemed sad. I came across her at the Patricia LaDoux
00:26 Foundation. She wasn't spayed, so she did get spayed at the time, which to spay an
00:33 older cat is unusual in the sense that she hadn't already been spayed. Polly had
00:38 really bad teeth. She was in a lot of pain in her mouth. They did a dental
00:42 surgery to try and take out some of her teeth. They really didn't think anyone
00:46 was gonna adopt her. Who's gonna want to take this medically fragile cat that's
00:50 15 years old? And I loved her immediately because that's what I was looking for. I
00:55 wanted a cat that was underdog. She definitely was this shy little cat. I
00:59 thought, "Old lady cat. She's not gonna do much." And she definitely proved me wrong.
01:04 I got the impression that she hadn't had attention in a really long time. So any
01:13 attention she got, she was just over the moon and she was so happy. She was
01:20 exploring. She was playing. It was like she was aging backwards. A key with
01:29 deaf cats, if you want to get their attention, I'm gonna go in front of her
01:32 and make sure she sees me. I'm gonna wave my hand. I'm gonna do some sort of motion
01:36 because they can be more easily startled. She has that aspect to her where she is
01:41 an alpha female, which I never ever would have thought she'd become the queen of
01:45 the house in a million years. She does like other cats too. She does like to
01:55 snuggle with them.
01:57 Sometimes she has this mode where she goes, "Awoo! Awoo!"
02:04 A lot of people I work with are like, "Is that a baby? What is that noise?" Everyone's
02:14 like perplexed by it. They named her Polly at the shelter because she's a
02:18 polydactyl. She has seven toes on each of her front paws. They're just such a part
02:24 of her personality. My dad actually gave her middle name, which is Esther. So we
02:28 named her Polly Esther. Such a dad joke. I really think that Polly knows that I
02:36 took her home because she really purrs pretty much for me. My boyfriend, she
02:41 loves her daddy too, but I'd say we have a little extra special bond perhaps.
02:46 We've had her three years. Coming up February 26th, this year her party's gonna
02:52 be cheese themed because that's her favorite thing in the world.
02:56 When I tell people about her, she has big paws. She has no teeth. She can't hear.
03:01 She's almost 18. They're like, "Wow! How many more unique traits can she have?"
03:06 Love has healed her. Love has completely healed her, her soul, her body.
03:13 When we brought Polly home, I just didn't really form expectations. I just said
03:20 whatever time I have with her is gonna be special. It's gonna be the best time
03:23 of her life. She's gonna be spoiled rotten and she's gonna get the retirement
03:26 home that she really deserves.
03:30 So, mission accomplished.
