When lonely bunny gets a friend
Transcript
00:00 She was abandoned in these hills outside of San Francisco.
00:05 Whiskey.
00:06 And we had one rabbit named Whiskey.
00:08 He really needed a friend.
00:10 We figured that they would be a good fit for each other.
00:13 That first week when we brought Malibu home,
00:15 we had them living side by side.
00:18 So Whiskey was on one side of the living room
00:20 and we had a pen in the middle
00:21 and Malibu was on the other side.
00:23 Even though they were separated by the fence,
00:26 they would sit together and cuddle together
00:28 through the pen.

00:32 When Malibu was old enough to be spayed,
00:35 we were able to spend a weekend bonding them.
00:38 And then from then on, they've always lived together.

00:44 Just the cutest thing to witness,
00:56 their love for each other.

01:01 It's kind of rare for rabbits just to bond that easily.
01:06 So we really got lucky with them
01:09 that their bond is so strong.
01:11 January of this year, we came home
01:14 and we found Malibu just completely laying still
01:17 on her side, not able to move at all.
01:20 On our way to the emergency, her eyes started flickering.
01:24 They ran blood tests.
01:25 We had a CT test done
01:27 and she was diagnosed with something called
01:29 vestibular disease.
01:31 It's basically an imbalance of the central nervous system
01:35 that's in charge of their balance.
01:37 When we first brought her home to the hospital,
01:39 we could tell she was very uncomfortable.
01:40 She didn't wanna move at all.
01:42 Whiskey definitely knew something wasn't right.
01:45 He would go over to her when she was just laying in her bed
01:49 and he would groom her.
01:50 And just, I think his presence being around
01:53 really encouraged her and gave her the will
01:57 to want to get better.
01:58 We're still not sure exactly what was causing
02:12 her vestibular disease,
02:14 but we did put her on a treatment plan.
02:16 Careful, Malibu, be careful.
02:19 Okay.
02:22 She's on antibiotics, anti-parasite medication,
02:25 and then we do physical therapy with her.
02:27 And it's been about four weeks
02:29 since she first had that incident
02:31 and she's doing a lot better now.
02:32 When she stands up on her hind legs
02:34 and when she's moving kind of fast,
02:36 she still does wobble here and there,
02:38 but she doesn't let that stop her at all.
02:40 Whiskey gets the big brother award of the year
02:43 because he's always there for her.
02:45 And I think definitely having him around was instrumental
02:49 in her progressing and getting to a healthier place.
02:52 They're under the couch right now,
02:54 sleeping and cuddling.
