After the Ribble Valley in Lancashire was awarded the happiest place to live, I wanted to see why this was the case as well as speak to residents to see what they thought.
The study, carried out by GoSmokeFree, named the Ribble Valley as the happiest based on a number of different categories such as green spaces, weekly earnings, crime rates and unemployment rates.

00:00 Hi, my name's Sam, Digital Reporter for the Lancashire Post and come with me as I visit
00:06 places in the Ribble Valley after the area was named the happiest place to live in the
00:10 UK. I also asked residents about their favourite things to do and visit in the Ribble Valley.
00:17 So I jumped on the next available bus into the Ribble Valley where I wanted to see why
00:21 it was such a happy area as well as talk to residents about their thoughts on living in
00:26 the Ribble Valley.
00:29 Could I just get your reaction to the news that Ribble Valley's been named the happiest
00:33 place to live in the UK?
00:34 Yeah, I would agree. Yeah, it's a really positive place to live.
00:37 What's your favourite thing about living in the Ribble Valley?
00:39 Probably that everything's on your doorstep, so there's loads of nice walks to do, the
00:45 countryside's beautiful, loads of little shops, yeah.
00:49 A lot of people have kind of mentioned the sense of community and little towns in the
00:52 Ribble Valley. Would you say that's kind of a good point?
00:54 Yeah, absolutely. There's loads of local things. Yeah, yeah, definitely.
00:59 Yeah, so what is your favourite thing about living in the Ribble Valley?
01:08 Well, I just think it's the lovely walks and the nice countryside and, like I say, I've
01:14 been here all my life and I really like to see nice friendly people. It's all to do with
01:18 the sense the new houses have been built, you know, and quite a few different people
01:25 have come in. It's just a lovely place.
01:27 Would you recommend someone to move here if they were thinking about it?
01:31 I would think so, yeah. I've always been, like I say, I've lived here all my life and
01:37 I've been quite happy here. And there's such, you know, you're so close to all the countryside
01:44 and lovely walks, yeah, I can't fault it.
01:47 And is there a kind of sense of community in Ribble Valley and Longridge, would you
01:52 say?
01:53 Oh yeah, there's lots of things you can get engaged into, like line dancing and country
01:59 western nights and there's all sorts of different things. We've lost our cinema, which was a
02:04 blow, but yeah, it's just nice. I just like it. It's nice and friendly.
02:10 So, would you recommend people move into the Ribble Valley?
02:14 Oh yes.
02:15 What's your favourite thing about the Ribble Valley?
02:17 I've known the Ribble Valley all my life, although I haven't lived here. I've had relatives
02:22 that have, and owned stables, horses, and it was very popular around the area. I'm going
02:33 back right through to the early 60s. It's never changed. It's very traditional, very
02:44 reserved. It is a very close-knit person place. You've seen the history of the Romans
02:56 and all the background, and we're very proud of it. Lancashire people are very proud of
03:02 the Ribble Valley.
03:03 And I guess on a final note, there was also news that the happiest place to live in Lancashire
03:09 was actually Osselt Whistle and not the Ribble Valley. I just want to get your reaction to
03:13 that.
03:14 No. I grew up here in Lancashire. I'm not sure about Osselt Whistle being the happiest
03:24 place.
