For the latest video in our LP Eats series, we decided to shake things up a bit and try a chain restaurant's effort at a chicken shawarma as opposed to something from an independent takeaway...

00:00 How we doing gang? Another day, another kebab review. Now we are post bank holiday so back
00:10 into the swing of things on the kebab front. So today heading down to the first chain that
00:16 we're covering as part of this series. We're going to do German Donner Kebab in Preston.
00:21 People who have walked through the town centre will know exactly where it is. So yeah, just
00:24 walking across the town now from our offices in the UCLan building in the media factory.
00:30 Weather's lovely, feeling hungry, let's go see what it's like. First chain like I say,
00:36 so expecting something a little different but yeah, let's see how it compares, how it
00:41 stacks up to some proper classic places with the more authentic homemade offerings.
00:47 Alright kebab fans, so here we were at GDK and as you can see, pretty good looking kebab
01:10 that we got served up. They now have bred something a little different, not the usual
01:15 kind of wrap scenario like I say in the review later on. This is almost like a taco shell
01:20 shaped thing but yeah, looking really good. Everything about it just screamed kebabs done
01:27 right as the napkin says. So very keen to get stuck in. Yeah, I think the first thing
01:33 I really noticed is just how hefty this thing was. So cracked it open, had a bash, really
01:38 nice to get some chips alongside it as well although I did have to plump for the meal
01:41 deal rather than just the kebab to get those so you do have to pay a little extra but yeah,
01:46 had a few bites. I was pretty impressed by this, you know, it was nice.
01:49 So far we've done a lot of independent restaurants, a lot of well-known takeaways on places like
01:56 Frygate which everyone will know but so today we decided to do something a bit different,
02:01 switch up a bit and try our first chain which is obviously going to be GDK German Doner
02:06 Kebab in the middle of town. So obviously with us having done independence first, it
02:10 was nice to try a chain to see how that differs from the classic kind of family run, homemade
02:15 authentic stuff, somewhat a bit more mass produced, compare and contrast, see how they
02:20 measure up on that front. So first of all, it's divided the place, walking in, obviously
02:24 it's a little more sanitised than your usual kind of places, sanitised I don't mean literally
02:28 in terms of cleanliness, I mean just in terms of it's very corporate, that kind of stuff
02:31 so not as good as proper authentic places on that front. It was fine, it was a little
02:37 busy, the staff were really nice, that's it, what more can you say really, it was just
02:42 pretty bland. So I guess 2.5 out of 5 on that front. Onto the actual kebab itself, now I've
02:48 got the OG kebab which set me back about £6.99 which is a lot of money but we'll come to
02:52 the value in a minute. The naan itself, they do this waffle naan which is kind of like
02:56 a taco shell shaped thing, it was okay, it was nice, it tasted better than it looked
03:02 like it would but it still wasn't a classic naan so it's a 3 on that front. The meat inside
03:11 was nice though, I went for the chicken shawarma, obviously couldn't review chicken shawarmas,
03:15 it was good, it was flaky, it was flavoursome, it was juicy, it wasn't dry. Yeah, it was
03:21 just missing that little something just to tip it over into being brilliant so it got
03:25 4 out of 5 on that front. There were some good extras in there though, the salad was
03:28 really fresh, there was plenty of it, there was plenty packed into it which was really
03:31 nice and there was good sauce in there, some of the best sauce I've had, in fact probably
03:34 the best sauce apart from maybe the tikka sauce I had from Jaffa, the best sauce we've
03:39 had so far in any kebab, that was really nice. So the extras got a 4, the only reason you
03:44 didn't get a 5 is because to get fries with your kebab you kind of had to make it a meal
03:48 deal which bumped up the price by £10.49 I think which is a lot of cash for lunchtime.
03:55 So yeah, speaking of cash, coming on to value now, I give it a 2 out of 5 for value because
03:59 it was nice, you get plenty of food, £7 for a kebab, this is supposed to be fast food,
04:06 this is supposed to be cheap and cheerful, I'm not sure, like you want that to be more
04:12 on the price point of like a fiver really, so I'm marking it down on that front. But
04:17 overall they do get a total of 15.5, so yeah that's my review for Gini K, thanks for watching.
