00:00 Hey, Bobby Manning here.
00:17 Welcome to the Garden Report, possibly the final Garden Report from Cleveland.
00:21 There goes the jigs.
00:22 With the Celtics up 3-1 in this series now.
00:25 Donovan Mitchell down for this game, still ends up being a competitive one, a tight one,
00:30 a crunch time game.
00:31 The first for the Celtics as John Grandy noted on the broadcast, since April 5th.
00:36 Pretty long time since they've played in a game this close, this late.
00:40 They had to overcome some offensive lapses.
00:44 They shot 35% in the fourth.
00:46 Tough games for Derek White.
00:48 Another one for Al Horford.
00:50 He goes 0-10 from three over the last two games.
00:52 The bench sprinkled in some scoring here and there in this game, but this one fell on Jason
00:57 Tatum with 33, Jaylen Brown with 27.
01:01 They led the Celtics late in this one.
01:04 A big three by Brown put the Cavs away for good along with some defensive posture.
01:08 An excellent Drew Holliday game as well.
01:11 He ended up being that third piece.
01:13 Noah DelZell, Josue Pavon here.
01:15 I guess the question now is the Celtics are on the verge of advancing to the East Finals.
01:20 Chris Dasporzing is still out.
01:22 Some of the roll guys cooling down here.
01:24 Holliday doing what he can.
01:26 This is about Brown, Tatum, who had their issues going against that heat defense at
01:31 different points.
01:32 Cavs defense, Tatum especially, being able to lead them, carry them now.
01:36 Big nights for Tatum here in Cleveland.
01:37 Absolutely.
01:38 I love to see it, especially with Jaylen in the mix as well.
01:41 An efficient Jaylen continues to do this throughout this entire series, or at least especially
01:45 throughout the last few games.
01:47 It's huge.
01:48 I feel like the Cleveland Cavaliers had a really hard time staying with them.
01:51 And then here goes Jaylen after the game, staying what I've been thinking for the last
01:54 three games.
01:55 No one can guard this guy on the Cleveland Cavaliers, especially in transition.
01:58 When the Southerners are playing, when they have the defensive identity back into the
02:03 fold, I just think it all comes together nicely for Jaylen.
02:07 But at the same time, even in the half-court set, I still think the Cavaliers would have
02:10 trouble staying in front of him.
02:13 But Tatum obviously had a great performance as well.
02:16 16 points in the first quarter just established that it was going to be one of those nights
02:21 of percentage-wise.
02:22 Sure, it wasn't anywhere near 50%, but it was enough to create that space.
02:26 And Drew Holliday just doing everything, man.
02:29 The rebounding, the assist, the defense, especially when the Cleveland Cavaliers got hot from
02:33 beyond the arc without Donovan Mitchell.
02:36 I mean, Max Struess.
02:37 OK, we see you, Max.
02:38 All right.
02:39 You've been quiet all series.
02:40 Not tonight.
02:41 That was not the case.
02:42 You're lucky you switched them to Moore.
02:43 But it wasn't enough.
02:44 Oh, absolutely.
02:45 You had to.
02:46 I mean, when the Donovan Mitchell news came out, I was like, he's got a score of 10.
02:48 Come on, price picks.
02:50 And of course, he went ahead and drained five three-pointers in this one.
02:54 Of course, brought to you by Price Picks.
02:55 Check them out.
02:56 PricePicks.com/CLNS.
02:57 Get 100% deposit match up to $100 when you head over there.
03:02 Just use that code CLNS.
03:03 For Tatum, who certainly went more in this one with 33.
03:07 We've talked a ton about the struggles.
03:09 He's breaking out of them.
03:10 He's not shooting great, but he's forcing his way to the rim, getting to the free throw
03:14 line, piling up the scoring totals we want to see after he started the playoffs.
03:18 21 points per game.
03:19 What are you seeing different from him over these last two?
03:22 Yeah, I mean, the three-point shot is going to come and go.
03:24 We know that about him.
03:25 That's been his game.
03:27 But what we're seeing across the board right now is that he's really dominating the game
03:30 on both ends.
03:31 It wasn't just offensive tonight.
03:32 There were so many possessions that he altered defensively.
03:35 Blocks, steals, getting big rebounds.
03:37 I think he ended up with 11 rebounds again tonight.
03:39 And I think sometimes rebounding is a misleading stat because a lot of them are uncontested.
03:43 He got some contested rebounds today that were clutch rebounds that they really needed.
03:48 And so to me, back-to-back 33-point performances to come out on the road and win both of these
03:52 games, it was just huge.
03:54 It was both huge games by him and Jalen Brown.
03:57 And like you said, I don't think anybody can guard Jalen.
03:59 And a big part of that is because they're putting their best defender on Jason Tatum.
04:03 And that creates so many mismatches for the Celtics across the board.
04:08 And whoever they're going to play next, this is going to be the same situation where you
04:10 have your one guy that can guard a big wing.
04:13 And most teams just don't have the personnel to guard Jalen Brown.
04:15 And then he comes out and he does what he's been doing.
04:17 I mean, he's shooting 61% from the field in the series over four games.
04:22 Yeah.
04:23 And 80% from the line.
04:24 You know what helps too, though, guys?
04:26 Not having to defend Donovan Mitchell like he's had to throughout the series.
04:30 Not that it's been a humongous effect like you just mentioned, like his shooting percentage
04:34 throughout the series.
04:35 However, in this game, he really had that space to just go off the way he did.
04:38 And I'm really happy he didn't get too caught up in the drama and all that stuff, man.
04:44 But man, these guys continue to show that they're mature.
04:47 The last three, four years, like, I don't know, maybe a couple of years ago, that's
04:50 enough for them to lose focus.
04:52 And all of a sudden the Cavs go on a run in this atmosphere, especially, but not tonight.
04:56 Yeah, it's got to come a long way.
04:57 I want a big factor.
04:58 Him ruled out Mitchell right before game time.
05:01 We'll see where he's at.
05:02 It might be something where he carried them for three games through a sore quad.
05:07 And now they're saying it's a cap here.
05:09 Not a great sign.
05:10 And I don't know when we'll see him again here.
05:12 Certainly, there's seasons on the line on Wednesday in game five.
05:16 So does he got through?
05:17 If he couldn't go tonight, I don't feel great about him being out there Wednesday, but we'll
05:21 see.
05:22 He's absence for this one.
05:23 The South, the Cavs try to go to the paint.
05:25 I thought it was interesting after the game, Hugh Holiday was talking about how they actually
05:29 want the Cavs to go to the paint, take shots there.
05:32 They'd rather have that than the three.
05:33 You said with Struce and some of the other guys getting going from three, the Cavs with
05:38 the team, the shot 53 tonight, just trying to beat them from there.
05:41 So late in the game, they forced the Cavs inside and it was a it was a good strategy.
05:46 They didn't end up taking a three of them.
05:48 That's true.
05:49 Spawn over the last five minutes there.
05:51 And so one of the other things I'm looking at from this one is Horford.
05:54 Chris Stas Porzingis, we saw him work out this morning at shoot around, looked like
05:59 he was advancing a little bit more with the physicality, with the movement.
06:02 He's not two weeks removed from the injury.
06:03 But we're again in this game starting to see Horford, the cumulative effect of the minutes.
06:08 They scaled them back tonight.
06:09 He still misses four open threes and defensively they're going at him.
06:14 He had a tough time keeping up with the penetration that the Cavaliers were producing in this
06:18 game.
06:19 Now, certainly Brown Tatum holiday pick him up in a game like this.
06:22 He gets a big block late.
06:24 But how much are they going to need Porzingis going into this next round here?
06:29 Can they continue to rely on Brown and Tatum to carry them while some of the depth guys
06:33 just do what they can?
06:34 It's hard to say, honestly, Bobby, especially when you look at what's going on between the
06:38 Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks.
06:40 Obviously, the New York Knicks are missing a lot up front.
06:42 I mean, they are in a worse situation than the Celtics when you think about it.
06:45 No Julius Randle, who's a big part of what they do.
06:48 No Mitchell Robinson, who I think would be who really impact a series like this if the
06:51 Celtics were in a hypothetical series, if they had to start off without Chris Stapps,
06:55 that's an advantage for the Knicks.
06:57 But without those two guys, I mean, it's not ideal, but it doesn't scare me as much when
07:03 you see he's getting closer.
07:05 You know, we're not quite sure how long that series is going to go.
07:07 But overall, I mean, I do like where the Celtics are right now and whether it means Chris Stapps
07:13 starts the series or not.
07:16 At some point in that series, whether it's game two, game three, if that's the comeback
07:19 game for Porzingis, like, OK, sure.
07:20 But it's right now, Bobby, it's hard to say.
07:22 I mean, between the Knicks and the Pacers.
07:23 Good point.
07:24 Yeah, because that series could start on Sunday if the Knicks and Pacers wrap it up early,
07:29 as well as the Celtics, of course, or it could push to Tuesday, just like this series did
07:33 with a game seven on Sunday.
07:35 So you might have a couple extra days if that goes seven for Porzingis to get back into
07:39 the flow here.
07:40 Do you think they need him at the start of next year?
07:43 I don't think so.
07:44 No, I don't think they need him.
07:45 And to be honest with you, it's hard to even fixate on Porzingis absence when you're seeing
07:49 what's happening injury wise around the league.
07:51 Like, knock on wood, the Celtics team has been really healthy.
07:53 Like he's the one guy that's been out and he's been in and out all year that it's not
07:57 like they don't know what their identity is without him.
07:59 They very much do.
08:00 Yes, Al Horford, I think, has looked a little bit slower than he did during the regular
08:03 season.
08:04 I think he's been a little bit slower with him.
08:05 You know, I don't know off the top of my head, but I know that his stats are so much better
08:08 when he has two days of rest versus one.
08:11 And three days is even better.
08:13 And so when you look at the series and you saw that it was every other game, and I think
08:15 the next round is going to be every other game as well.
08:17 It's going to take a toll on him and it would be a luxury to be able to play him off the
08:20 bench and split his minutes with Porzingis.
08:23 They don't have that luxury.
08:24 I think it's the reality of the playoffs.
08:26 But Lou Cornette came in and gave really good minutes tonight.
08:28 We haven't yet seen Xavier Tillman.
08:30 I know a lot of people are talking about that.
08:31 Where is he?
08:32 Is he going to play?
08:33 So looking like he's probably not.
08:35 And tonight would have been a really good night to play him if he was going to get real
08:37 run and he's not getting it.
08:38 It's a matchup thing, I think.
08:41 And so I think between Al Horford and Lou Cornette, you have enough in this front court
08:46 and you have enough experience and versatility that it's not perfect.
08:49 Your perfect roster has Porzingis, but it's a lot better than everyone else's roster,
08:54 I still think.
08:55 Can Horford hang in there for a little longer?
08:58 A few days off, we're doing well.
08:59 But I mean, yeah, heading heading back to Boston.
09:03 I wouldn't be surprised if he bounces back.
09:05 Not in a big way, but it's just I just think when you face a team that many times and you
09:10 kind of slumming it the last couple of games, the way Al has been, you could bounce back.
09:15 I don't think it's one of those situations where you absolutely need him to perform at
09:19 a certain level to finish off this series.
09:20 But obviously, the Celtics have to get it done.
09:22 They cannot mess around here.
09:24 And I don't want to come back to Cleveland.
09:25 I also think on the three point shooting, he's missed his last 10 and that's a bad
09:29 shooting stretch.
09:30 But he goes through stretches like that.
09:32 It's not always the legs.
09:33 It's not all you know, something is a shooter.
09:35 Derek White goes right.
09:36 Right.
09:37 Jason Tatum goes through them.
09:38 It's really important to scale the minutes back tonight.
09:41 And I thought it was good.
09:42 Yeah.
09:43 But I also think it's not ideal like the last game.
09:45 But yeah.
09:46 Well, Horford, Moe bounce back Wednesday.
09:49 We will see for now, though, Celtics and a golden opportunity to get more rest and wrap
09:55 this series up on Wednesday.
09:56 We will be live there for game five in Boston.
10:00 Celtics Cavs.
10:01 I thought they can do it again.
10:02 Win three straight.
10:03 Wrap up the series.
10:04 Get themselves some extra rest and practice time.
10:06 And in these finals with two teams, as we mentioned, could be potentially vulnerable
10:11 here.
10:12 We are brought to you by prize picks, of course, as well as PXG.
10:15 Go to PXG dot com right now and use the code Garn report for a discount on your first purchase
