00:00The third leg of the Triple Crown looks ever so slightly different this year in 2024.
00:09The Belmont States is still that third running of the Triple Crown in horse racing, but the
00:15track not at Belmont Park, out on Long Island, upstate New York, Saratoga is where we will
00:22have this third leg of the Triple Crown this year.
00:26So to preview everything you need to know, the field, the horses, the thoroughbreds and
00:31what this track looks like, our guide Dubsy Anderson is here on this Friday bright and
00:37early out in the FanDuel TV headquarters on the West Coast, but to get you set for the
00:42third leg of the Triple Crown, the 2024 Belmont States.
00:46Dubsy, as always, we appreciate the time.
00:49Happy Friday boys, the third duel of the Triple Crown, the oldest of the three classics, and
00:55as you highlighted there, Ben, looks a little differently this year.
00:58Instead of Belmont Park, we will race the Belmont at Saratoga.
01:01So what does that mean?
01:02Well, it's going to be ran at a shorter distance or a mile and a half.
01:05We go back to a mile and a quarter, the same distance of the Kentucky Derby.
01:09And we've got a couple of superstars in the sport.
01:12Mystic Dan will be back in this field after that big win at Churchill Downs and Seize
01:16the Gray who captured the day at the Preakness.
01:19So the third duel of the Triple Crown with those two heavy hitters and a couple of fresh
01:22faces certainly looks to be one of the most competitive additions that we've seen in the
01:26last couple of years.
01:29As we all know, Seize the Gray winning the second leg of the Triple Crown, the Preakness
01:34States not all that long ago.
01:37So Dubsy, you mentioned the distance and the change from what would normally be the longest
01:41race at Belmont Park, now at Saratoga, looking similar to what we saw at Churchill Downs.
01:47Are there any differences in the track outside of the distance from what we're used to out
01:52on Long Island?
01:53Yes.
01:54So I guess with a smaller field and a longer stretch to get things underway, it really
01:59gives all of these runners a great shot at it.
02:01You know, we've got 20 horses in the Kentucky Derby, we've only got 10 runners going in
02:05for this one.
02:06So I really do think any horse from that starting gate has a realistic shot of taking out this
02:11big score.
02:12And look, the public are going to be very invested in the big names, the big favorites
02:16that have come out of those first two classics.
02:18So I think this is a great race and a great betting opportunity to maybe target a bit
02:22of a price.
02:23You know, the Derby, the Preakness, and here at the Belmont, these are the three-year-olds.
02:27They've only got this one season, one.
02:29So for some runners, have we seen their top gear already?
02:33Could we see a couple of starters?
02:34Mindframe from the outside only has the two career starts.
02:37If you look at the speed fix, has a lot of upside.
02:41So it should be a fantastic one.
02:42Saturday afternoon, we are expecting a bit of weather, 86% chance there of a couple of
02:49showers.
02:50So we're looking for horses who certainly got that pedigree to get it done on the off-track.
02:53Doves, when we take a look at this race, because the reason why we don't get a triple crown
02:58winner every single year, because of how hard it is to run all three of those races in that
03:01short of a time frame.
03:03So for the people that don't know out there, are there a couple of horses here that have
03:06run all three?
03:07And also, are there any plant horses here in the Belmont that maybe they're just surfacing
03:11now as their first run in the triple crown series?
03:13Yeah, I think the outside runner is certainly one to watch.
03:17The 10 mind frame only has the two starts and the speed figs absolutely monster from
03:22what we have seen, especially there breaking that maiden.
03:25We'll see Mystic Dan, who won the Kentucky Derby.
03:27And the question mark for Mystic Dan was to roll it back two weeks into the Preakness.
03:31Showed up to the Preakness, a very game runner up performance.
03:34I think there could be a bit of a bounce looming here for Mystic Dan.
03:38It's a lot to ask of a three-year-old to keep going, you know, a couple of weeks back
03:42in.
03:43Such a big effort.
03:44And I do think there could be a bit of a pace early in this one.
03:47So Mystic Dan, your Kentucky Derby champion, I think is absolutely going to be up against
03:51it.
03:52Sierra Leone, your morning line favorite there.
03:54Now Sierra Leone, I think gets a really good setup and could be arguably the most talented
03:58three-year-old of the bunch.
04:00A runner up there in the Derby, Flavion Pratt gets the ride.
04:03So we've got a new rider aboard Sierra Leone, the nine.
04:06So no surprises here.
04:08It's a home game for Chad Brown.
04:09And if we do see another step forward, a bit more progression, Sierra Leone could be very
04:14tough trying to mow down.
04:16Sierra Leone, the favorite right now at that nine to five number that Dubbs just referenced.
04:20He lost out to Mystic Dan at the Kentucky Derby in the closest ever finish we have seen
04:27at the run for the Roses.
04:29But Dubbs, he's so far in the first two legs of the Triple Crown.
04:32It really hasn't been that betting favorite that has paced the field.
04:35So as you look at these 10 horses that will run the 2024 Belmont Stakes, what is your
04:41best bet?
04:42Whether it be a straight wager or maybe one of those exotics to finish out the third leg
04:45of the Triple Crown?
04:46I'm looking towards the two.
04:48Resilience listed there at 10 to one on the board, plus 1,000.
04:52You can already get these numbers over at the FanDuel Sportsbook with the advanced wagering.
04:56It's been boom or bust.
04:57A winner of the grade two, the Wood Memorial, showed up to the Kentucky Derby.
05:01Really didn't get a favorable trip.
05:03So I don't think we have seen the top gear, the top level here for the two Resilience.
05:08And we're still getting a massive prize.
05:10You know, a lot of bettors who play the ponies, they'll really jump in and target the classics.
05:14And of course, the Kentucky Derby winner will see a lot of attention.
05:17Seize the gray who won the Preakness will also get a couple of dollars thrown on it
05:21at the window.
05:22So I think the two Resilience, after making a very bold move in the Kentucky Derby, flattened
05:28out a little late in that one with a bit of extra fitness.
05:31The morning works looked very sharp here for Bill Mott and the team.
05:34I think this Colt, the two Resilience, is getting set to run at a very big price.
05:40If we take a look at this race heading into here, and again, it's not at Belmont, it is
05:43moved over to Saratoga Springs, 50,000 fans were capped out.
05:47This is different because we see almost twice the amount of fans at the Kentucky Derby and
05:51the Preakness.
05:52From you being a true horse racing fan here, how does the approach change?
05:55Is it different for the horses or the trainers or you shouldn't worry about that atmosphere
05:58at all?
05:59The horses just run the race they're supposed to run.
06:01Yeah, I think we can sort of put a bit more weight on the horses that have gone through
06:06a couple of the bigger races.
06:07Just having that experience racing in front of a lot of people, you know, these are younger
06:11horses and you get out there to the track in front of 50, 60, 70,000, at that point,
06:17they don't know the difference between 20,000, 40,000, but it is, it's noisy, it's that crowd
06:23environment and just going into the starting gate for a lot of them who don't have that
06:27experience.
06:28I think mind frame, the 10 could be the buzz horse, the bit of a price play for a lot of
06:32the handicappers.
06:33That would be the question mark for me, just having those two starts with the monster speed
06:38figures to go with lightly, you know, lightly race there on the experience front.
06:42Maybe that could be the knock towards the outside run of the 10 mind frame, but you
06:45certainly want to see that they've either gone into the Kentucky Derby or the Preakness.
06:49I think that's why the two resilience stands out for me as a bit of a price play.
06:53Just having that experience and already showing up and giving us a big performance on a big
06:57stage such as that.
07:00Maybe the crowd cap at Saratoga doesn't make all that much different for the atmosphere
07:04for the horses, but it does mean less alcohol consumption because let me tell you, Belmont
07:10Park for the Belmont stakes, the place Donnie right side would never want to go.
07:15WZ Anderson, we appreciate it always.
07:18Enjoy the third leg of the triple crown tomorrow.
07:20Thanks for being here.
