00:00:00Can you say hard hats folks? Hard hats, lunch pail, steel tool, boots.
00:00:08Anything short of a championship this year is a failure.
00:00:10Look at this boomer right here.
00:00:12You've just got so much talent here.
00:00:14Somebody said we need to apologize for Jalen.
00:00:16Can I pull the John? What are we apologizing for? What did we say? What did we do?
00:00:30We're back, Bobby.
00:00:32What?
00:00:34For everyone who watches The Office,
00:00:36I am the living embodiment of that
00:00:38Jim Halpert, what is going on?
00:00:40meme right now.
00:00:42Cut the music.
00:00:44Like, what is going on?
00:00:46We were coming on here
00:00:48to talk about
00:00:50the Derek White contract extension
00:00:52which is great. I'm not going to say
00:00:54predicted. We had some questions yesterday
00:00:56whether it would happen. I was leaning yes
00:00:58and it happened and there was rejoicing
00:01:00and then another bombshell
00:01:02since that happened
00:01:04it was
00:01:06Wick Grousbeck and the Celtics
00:01:08are going to
00:01:10are looking to sell the team
00:01:12after this year. That's it.
00:01:14Like, wow.
00:01:16Right?
00:01:18And I think people are still trying to
00:01:20wrap their minds around is this a good thing?
00:01:22Is this a bad thing?
00:01:24But
00:01:27I don't know. We'll have to kind of wait
00:01:29and see so let's react
00:01:31to the news. I think
00:01:33backwards here. I wanted to do White first
00:01:35but I think I got to go with Wick here.
00:01:37I think you're right.
00:01:39You got to go with the most recent because
00:01:41it's the one that involves
00:01:43a fair amount of unpacking to
00:01:45figure out what it is that's going on
00:01:47here. Celtics ownership group
00:01:49led by Wick Grousbeck planning to make the team
00:01:51available for sale. A little bit more
00:01:53insight into it with this
00:01:55statement that was released
00:01:57here and can I see all of it? Yeah.
00:01:59Boston Celtics, Boston
00:02:01Basketball Partners LLC, the ownership group
00:02:03of the Boston Celtics announced its intention to sell
00:02:05shares of the team
00:02:07controlling family of the ownership group after
00:02:09considerable thought and internal discussion decided to sell
00:02:11the team for estate and family consideration.
00:02:13Managing board of the ownership
00:02:15group expects to sell
00:02:17majority interest in 2024-25
00:02:19with the balance closing in 28.
00:02:21Expect Wick Grousbeck to remain
00:02:23the governor until closing in
00:02:2528. So that's it.
00:02:27Out.
00:02:29I guess I'll get your initial
00:02:31reaction first, Bobby. I have some thoughts
00:02:33but I'm still just trying to wrap my mind around a few
00:02:35elements of this but
00:02:37I think fans right now are kind of looking
00:02:39at Wick a little bit as a
00:02:41martyr. He did what it
00:02:43took. He paid the bill. It's a little
00:02:45bit of a dine and dash situation.
00:02:47He
00:02:49ordered the most expensive champagne
00:02:51and had a terrific
00:02:53meal and served it up to Celtics fans
00:02:55and now the bill is
00:02:57going to come due and we're in second apron
00:02:59hell going forward
00:03:01and a monumental tax
00:03:03bill. Out.
00:03:05Cash out. And that's it.
00:03:07That's...
00:03:09It's understandable.
00:03:11We joked about this, Bobby, which is
00:03:13why we were always afraid in the past, right?
00:03:15I don't know if Wick's going to go there with the money.
00:03:17If he's going to go deep into the tax
00:03:19and all of those things because
00:03:21he is...
00:03:23It's weird to call somebody
00:03:25who's a multi-millionaire
00:03:27poor, but by NBA owner's
00:03:29standards, he's not one of the top dog
00:03:31super rich multi-billionaire
00:03:33guy in terms of assets. His greatest asset
00:03:35is the team and now
00:03:37he's cashing it in. Bought it for $316
00:03:39and the estimated return here is going to be
00:03:41five bill on this thing
00:03:43which is banana. Yeah, at least, right?
00:03:45Who knows what that championship did
00:03:47for the evaluation here.
00:03:49And think of the increase over 2002
00:03:51as you see there. $360 million.
00:03:531,200%
00:03:55increase in the valuation of the
00:03:57team. So, given the new financial
00:03:59reality of the league, the luxury
00:04:01tax situation, and we can
00:04:03take a look at that in a little bit here
00:04:05in terms of what the Celtics are paying.
00:04:07This
00:04:09felt inevitable.
00:04:11Now, did we expect it this soon?
00:04:13No. But when you look at the timeline
00:04:15as the Celtics laid out there that
00:04:17this is going to take until 2028,
00:04:19it makes some sense that they're starting this now.
00:04:21His goal always was
00:04:23banner 18, right?
00:04:25And he'll obviously be there for their repeat
00:04:27attempt and the
00:04:29third year
00:04:31run back if they're trying to do a repeat here
00:04:33if they repeat next year. So, he's
00:04:35here for that window, right John?
00:04:37And then, once the uncertainty
00:04:39begins around 2027,
00:04:412028, they're going to transition
00:04:43to undoubtedly a much
00:04:45more wealthy group or individual
00:04:47here. And tough to speculate
00:04:49on who that could be.
00:04:51But obviously, there's some big names
00:04:53that have gotten involved in the
00:04:55chase for franchises around the league.
00:04:57Matt Ishbia, the
00:04:59mortgage giant out there in Phoenix.
00:05:01Michael Bloomberg got involved
00:05:03in the Minnesota sale, which is about
00:05:05as rich as you can get as far
00:05:07as owners go. So, that's the kind of money we're talking
00:05:09about now with ownership
00:05:11groups in this league. And it will
00:05:13almost undoubtedly be a group
00:05:15that buys this team. But at least according to the statement
00:05:17there, I know Adam Simelsbach put
00:05:19out a statement that the other owners are
00:05:21looking to stay intact.
00:05:23That statement makes it sound like,
00:05:25John, that Wick's out.
00:05:27Pagliuca is out.
00:05:29All the owners from this group
00:05:31obviously oversaw so much success
00:05:33in the later years of their
00:05:35ownership here are out.
00:05:37So, certainly some anxiety
00:05:39and uncertainty
00:05:41warranted here.
00:05:43This is a group, John, obviously that
00:05:45prioritized winning
00:05:47basketball and
00:05:49investing in the
00:05:51franchise over maybe making
00:05:53as much money as they could
00:05:55or
00:05:57managing the bottom
00:05:59line. And
00:06:01they certainly showed that aggressiveness
00:06:03to go into the tax that some other teams
00:06:05with their money might not have been
00:06:07able to do here in recent years.
00:06:09I get the slight panic
00:06:11here among fans
00:06:13because
00:06:15your GM,
00:06:17you can mess around with that. That can change
00:06:19year in and year out.
00:06:21Your coach, that's going to change.
00:06:23If you don't get a good
00:06:25owner here,
00:06:27that's life, right?
00:06:29The rest of your life is probably going to be in the next
00:06:31ownership group. It's crazy,
00:06:33right? Because
00:06:35a couple of years ago, people were
00:06:37crying for a sale because it was a fear that
00:06:39WIC wouldn't go deep into the tax
00:06:41or spend or they'd always
00:06:43try to stay low here.
00:06:45And oftentimes, prior to a sale,
00:06:47Bobby, you go in the opposite direction.
00:06:49You start to trim it
00:06:51down to make it more attractive
00:06:53to sell, which is not sign
00:06:55anybody. So the fact that he did
00:06:57this with the intention of selling is interesting
00:06:59and kind of unorthodox.
00:07:01People thought John Henry might have been trying to do the
00:07:03same thing
00:07:05with the team,
00:07:07with the Red Sox, when they stopped spending money.
00:07:09And really, he was just being
00:07:11more prudent
00:07:13and cheap, I guess,
00:07:15depending on how you want to say it.
00:07:17But
00:07:19in this case, it's
00:07:21the opposite direction. There's a massive
00:07:23bill. Anybody coming in knows that they're going to have
00:07:25to pay big. And I guess what
00:07:27gives you pause here is seeing,
00:07:29yeah, is there a world in which
00:07:31owners come in and they're like,
00:07:33as I've always said, owners should view
00:07:35these things not as a business, but as a vanity.
00:07:37I've always wanted to own a team, and I own
00:07:39it, and it costs what it costs, but it's not my number
00:07:41one moneymaker. I have another successful
00:07:43business doing other things. And
00:07:45this is just my, what are you looking at, Bobby? This is
00:07:47a terrifying expression
00:07:49on your face.
00:07:57But then you see something like Steve
00:07:59Miller, who's
00:08:01one of the top 10 richest people on the
00:08:03planet,
00:08:05deciding that
00:08:07the Clippers, that he didn't want to
00:08:09spend for Paul George, and they want
00:08:11to operate under the second apron.
00:08:13What?
00:08:15What are we talking about?
00:08:17This is banana land to me.
00:08:19I woke up
00:08:21richest people in the world.
00:08:23See who's
00:08:25going to be in the mix here?
00:08:27Who knows, man?
00:08:29It's
00:08:31crazy. It's crazy
00:08:33here. It is crazy,
00:08:35but it's expected, right? Wick wasn't going
00:08:37to own this team forever. We knew
00:08:39at some point, as the cost
00:08:41of overseeing this team continued
00:08:43to rise, that he
00:08:45would make a sale. It's
00:08:47just a different era for the league now. It's
00:08:49difficult for
00:08:51him to keep up with
00:08:53the cost of this team, I'd imagine,
00:08:55given the tax payments they're going to have to
00:08:57make here into the future. We've
00:08:59had our conversation, John. Obviously, the top
00:09:01five is locked up now. The starting lineup
00:09:03is locked up through 2026.
00:09:05You can split up
00:09:07any one of those guys into multiple smaller
00:09:09contracts when the time
00:09:11comes, but that's still going to
00:09:13involve staying in the tax.
00:09:15That's still going to involve paying big
00:09:17money for this team until you start
00:09:19to just let guys go and, at that point,
00:09:21do a little bit of a mini reset
00:09:23at that time. The timing here makes sense
00:09:25because when Wick and those
00:09:27guys get out, it's going to be around the time
00:09:29that you
00:09:31start to go into a new era there
00:09:33with Tatum or Brown or whoever it might be
00:09:35at that point.
00:09:37He's here for this next couple-year run.
00:09:39Brad's here for this next couple-year
00:09:41run. Then, after that,
00:09:43who knows what's going to be left over here
00:09:45beyond the pieces that they have right
00:09:47now.
00:09:49You've got to be thrilled, and you've got to realize
00:09:51if you're the Celtics right now,
00:09:53this next year, two, three,
00:09:55it's all or nothing.
00:09:57You've got to go for it.
00:09:59You've got to do everything you can to win these next
00:10:01handful of years. That's why
00:10:03Derek White is extended
00:10:05here. That's why Sam Houser
00:10:07is probably going to be extended here.
00:10:09You've just got to keep as much of this roster
00:10:11together as you can.
00:10:13Then, it's going to be on the next
00:10:15ownership group to figure out what to do from there.
00:10:17They're obviously going to have deeper pockets
00:10:19to figure it out
00:10:21at that point.
00:10:23Obviously, everybody is just
00:10:25clamoring to see who
00:10:27will it be?
00:10:29What are their priorities?
00:10:31Are they as focused on winning
00:10:33as the Celtics group was?
00:10:35Is the next group just going to be trying to make
00:10:37money? Then, there's a million questions beyond that.
00:10:39They don't own the building.
00:10:41Would that ownership group look to build a new arena
00:10:43or something like that?
00:10:45You just don't see that.
00:10:47You just don't really see that.
00:10:49That would be difficult.
00:10:53It's a long term. This isn't
00:10:55selling the team tomorrow.
00:10:57This is a long, long term.
00:10:59It's a lot to unpack.
00:11:03It's not panic time,
00:11:05but it's certainly a
00:11:07stunning headline to read today.
00:11:11Again, minutes after
00:11:13the
00:11:15and I know this is what everyone's freaking out over.
00:11:19Nobody wants to see that.
00:11:21Someone's got to kidnap John Henry.
00:11:23Actually, if I say that and it happens,
00:11:25I'm probably going to be an accessory.
00:11:27John Henry can't be
00:11:29allowed
00:11:31to do this.
00:11:33He cannot be allowed.
00:11:35He's the first name you think of.
00:11:37He is.
00:11:39He is.
00:11:41He is.
00:11:43Holy crap.
00:11:45Holy crap.
00:11:47The reason we're talking about this first is it requires
00:11:49a lot of unpacking.
00:11:51We don't know exactly what it means.
00:11:53Honestly, you won't know what it means until
00:11:55you move forward
00:11:57with the sale
00:11:59and find out who the person
00:12:01is going to be and whatever.
00:12:03Let's be realistic.
00:12:05Wick spent because he knew
00:12:07he was cashing out.
00:12:09Would he have continued to do this forever
00:12:11if he remained owner? No.
00:12:13The people out there saying
00:12:15this is a bad thing, let's be real.
00:12:17Wick did what he did
00:12:19and is doing what he's doing because
00:12:21he went all in for a championship.
00:12:23Yes, it is going to be somebody
00:12:25else's mess to clean up, but if Wick didn't
00:12:27sell, Wick would have
00:12:29had to find a way, financially
00:12:31speaking, to get this team out of the
00:12:33second apron and not have to pay
00:12:35this hefty tax bill year after year
00:12:37very soon, which meant
00:12:39if it stayed under Wick and this ownership
00:12:41group, they would have had to find a way out of it.
00:12:43Anybody thinking the new person is going to
00:12:45come in and got it, Wick would have probably
00:12:47had to do it also.
00:12:49He gets out clean,
00:12:51he cashes in,
00:12:53and it's less about
00:12:55the new owner and it's more just about the new
00:12:57economic reality of the NBA,
00:12:59of who you have.
00:13:01Yes, there's definitely concern that you would bring in
00:13:03a John Henry type.
00:13:05That's scary, but
00:13:07ownership is ownership.
00:13:09If you're an owner, if you own the team, Bobby,
00:13:11and your GM's coming to you and be like, can I get this
00:13:13and can I get that, you'd have
00:13:15to think like, look, man, for
00:13:17a contender I'll spend.
00:13:19I'm going to out myself a little
00:13:21bit here.
00:13:23John Henry's philosophy is actually correct,
00:13:25but the
00:13:27way he goes about it and the way he talks to
00:13:29fans like they're idiots
00:13:31and that
00:13:33no one will understand
00:13:35is what hurts him. It's his
00:13:37presentation. It's the fact that he's an alien
00:13:39and doesn't understand
00:13:41how the plebs think.
00:13:43Yeah, you should not be...
00:13:45The Clippers are doing it now. I'm looking at
00:13:47this roster and I don't see a championship
00:13:49team, so we're going to go backwards
00:13:51to take a step forwards.
00:13:53That's what you're supposed
00:13:55to do. You can't just say, throw money
00:13:57at everything. The Celtics threw money at
00:13:59everything here because they felt really good about
00:14:01their championship chances and they feel
00:14:03good about their window here in the next two to three
00:14:05years, but then going forward, there's
00:14:07going to be some gutting and honestly, very
00:14:09likely to feature only one Supermax
00:14:11player and not two.
00:14:13You got to decide which of these guys you
00:14:15like best because this wouldn't
00:14:17be shocking that something like that is going to happen
00:14:19in a couple of years. It's not a today
00:14:21problem, but the economic reality of the
00:14:23NBA, the bill is coming due for someone
00:14:25at some point and it would have
00:14:27come due for Wick, who
00:14:29has some difficult decisions going forward.
00:14:31I'm not super concerned that
00:14:33the new guy is going to be cheap.
00:14:35No, the new guy is going to be faced with the same
00:14:37economic reality that everybody else is.
00:14:39The downside, and
00:14:41this is fair, is Wick
00:14:43was a fan, but Wick was a fan
00:14:45who also knew that he had
00:14:49that he wasn't
00:14:51made of money.
00:14:55He had limitations
00:14:57and yes, it does help when they're a fan as
00:14:59opposed to, like I said,
00:15:01the worst thing about John Henry is they
00:15:03claim they were fans when they came in and now he's using
00:15:05the word asset to describe the Red Sox
00:15:07and they're buying a bunch of other stuff and you don't know
00:15:09where his loyalty lies. Yes, absolutely.
00:15:11You want somebody who kind
00:15:13of gets it and that makes
00:15:15a difference.
00:15:17You have it with Kraft
00:15:19and you have it here
00:15:21with Wick. You've never had
00:15:23it with the Bruins and that's why everybody hates
00:15:25the Red Sox.
00:15:27So yeah, that would be
00:15:29nice, but I don't know. I really don't know what it's going to be.
00:15:31It'll be interesting when the names start to
00:15:33pop up and who knows? I think that's going to
00:15:35start happening pretty soon.
00:15:37You'll start to hear some ideas.
00:15:39I mean, if the idea is that they're cashing out
00:15:41by the end of the year, by the end
00:15:43of the next season,
00:15:45I think there's going to be some people here.
00:15:47Yeah, and the other ownership
00:15:49groups emerged pretty quickly in those other situations
00:15:51after Sarver sold the Suns
00:15:53and Glenn Taylor put the Wolves up
00:15:55for sale. So it's going to
00:15:57be pretty notable names. You have to
00:15:59imagine given the cost of this franchise
00:16:01and maybe it will be Henry. The Henry
00:16:03thing's interesting. If you're him,
00:16:05obviously his target had
00:16:07been Vegas.
00:16:09That franchise
00:16:11still seems uncertain.
00:16:13I know Silver's still kicking around Mexico
00:16:15City and they just keep
00:16:17kicking back that whole thing because of the TV
00:16:19negotiation here. So that
00:16:21doesn't look like it's going to happen until close
00:16:23to the end of the decade
00:16:25there. Obviously, there's
00:16:27a massive
00:16:29expansion fee associated
00:16:31with that. So I'm sure that would be,
00:16:33believe it or not, a more expensive purchase
00:16:35for FSG
00:16:37considering that to go
00:16:39out there to Vegas. I'm sure they'll have to build a new
00:16:41arena out there to go back to that conversation
00:16:43unless they're just moving in
00:16:45that T-Mobile arena
00:16:47out there. So do you pivot
00:16:49to the team in your backyard?
00:16:51Obviously, I
00:16:53think there'd be some appeal there
00:16:55to having another team in the same city.
00:16:57It's
00:16:59hard not to go to that name.
00:17:01He wanted the Bruins, couldn't
00:17:03get the Bruins, got the Penguins instead.
00:17:05Right.
00:17:07From Wick's perspective, as
00:17:09unpopular as Henry is,
00:17:11he is a local
00:17:13guy who bought in on the Red Sox
00:17:15and succeeded and prioritized
00:17:17winning there.
00:17:19It's a very unpopular name right now,
00:17:21but in
00:17:232013,
00:17:25this would have probably been a popular choice
00:17:27to buy the Celtics.
00:17:29Yeah.
00:17:31Can't do it. Sorry.
00:17:33Just can't do it. But
00:17:35it's happening. Cuban just did it
00:17:37and sold his
00:17:39majority. The Cuban one's the scary version
00:17:41of this where it goes to this
00:17:43gambling, big money
00:17:45family that's just trying to build a resort
00:17:47and make a billion bucks off
00:17:49the arena.
00:17:53Yeah.
00:17:55That's the other way this could go.
00:17:57Could you imagine if Henry
00:17:59traded Mookie and Tatum
00:18:01under his watch?
00:18:05The other part of that is LeBron would
00:18:07be in the ownership group.
00:18:09That's funny.
00:18:11I don't know.
00:18:13It's definitely one you have to think about
00:18:15because it's the most obvious.
00:18:17They're looking to get into the NBA.
00:18:19This is an NBA team becoming available
00:18:21in their backyard. I just wonder about the cost.
00:18:23Do you think Vegas,
00:18:25given the expansion fee and all the costs
00:18:27associated with starting that up,
00:18:29would be more expensive or the Celtics
00:18:31who are obviously a top five valuable team
00:18:33and have these massive costs
00:18:35associated with them? I think that's going to be a big
00:18:37part of the question too because if you're
00:18:39Henry and them, you buy the cheaper team.
00:18:41The better value purchase
00:18:43in that scenario.
00:18:45It's probably going to be pretty close.
00:18:47I don't know what the expansion fee is going to be like,
00:18:49but it's probably going to be ridiculous.
00:18:51Yeah.
00:18:53Again, just to clarify from that statement
00:18:55here,
00:18:57Boston Basketball Partners
00:18:59LLC includes
00:19:01Wick
00:19:03and Irv and Pags
00:19:05and the Abbey Group,
00:19:07which is
00:19:09Robert Epstein,
00:19:11and then also
00:19:13Paul Edgerly, Glenn Hutchins,
00:19:15James Pallotta,
00:19:17and a couple of others,
00:19:19managing directors, guys over
00:19:21at Bain Capital. That's the whole
00:19:23shebang.
00:19:25That's that. It's not just
00:19:27Wick. It's Wick and
00:19:29Boston Basketball LLC
00:19:31here.
00:19:33It would be a complete
00:19:35overhaul
00:19:37of ownership here and a
00:19:39completely new group coming in
00:19:41saying that.
00:19:43People are throwing out some crazy
00:19:45nefarious names. I don't know whether
00:19:47someone joked,
00:19:49LIV Celtics. I don't think that that's something
00:19:51the NBA will allow at this time.
00:19:53Saudi ownership.
00:19:55Someone mentioned Musk.
00:19:57Is this Bezos
00:19:59on anything basketball related?
00:20:01No, and I think he's looked into
00:20:03that at different points.
00:20:05That would be interesting. Obviously, there's the
00:20:07prospect of Seattle expansion as well.
00:20:09That would
00:20:11probably make more sense in his case
00:20:13later this decade.
00:20:15I probably would
00:20:17rule him out, but it's
00:20:19one of a short list of names. There's not many
00:20:21here that can purchase this team.
00:20:23I guess add him to the list
00:20:25too.
00:20:27I won't get
00:20:29into that.
00:20:33It's interesting
00:20:35how this works.
00:20:37Again,
00:20:39we'll jump back
00:20:41to this
00:20:45later in the show.
00:20:47Certainly, if any new insights
00:20:49or anything become available,
00:20:51I'm curious how long
00:20:53Wick has known this. You'll probably hold a press conference,
00:20:55right?
00:20:57I'd imagine.
00:20:59If they're putting out a statement, this thing
00:21:01was in the works. This isn't something he just
00:21:03decided to do now.
00:21:05It is interesting that that
00:21:07happened the way it happened
00:21:09and the timing of it,
00:21:11particularly off the heels of
00:21:13the Derek White announcement.
00:21:15Again,
00:21:17I don't know that anybody was concerned
00:21:19that the Derek White deal wasn't going to get done
00:21:21because the Celtics weren't going to offer
00:21:23that money. I think
00:21:25if there was any concern, it was
00:21:27simply
00:21:29because
00:21:31White might not take it.
00:21:33The fact that he
00:21:35is, I think,
00:21:37was amazing.
00:21:39It is just super
00:21:41interesting that right
00:21:43off the bat, as soon as that happens,
00:21:45bang, this gets announced
00:21:47here. It's pretty crazy. We'll get
00:21:49into the White stuff in a little bit. As I said, we'll continue
00:21:51talking here. I'll tell you real quick,
00:21:53prize picks, NBA season
00:21:55might be over, but America's number
00:21:57one fantasy sports app is still
00:21:59cooking. There's a lot of things you can get
00:22:01in on here if you want to get involved with prize
00:22:03picks. You can see the
00:22:05offer on the screen.
00:22:07If you deposit $100,
00:22:09you get a deposit match up to $100,
00:22:11which is great.
00:22:13WNBA action rolling right now.
00:22:15Really fun and exciting stuff.
00:22:17You can get involved with that. Baseball,
00:22:19all you have to do is pick
00:22:21two or more stats,
00:22:23some of your favorite players, the action that you're
00:22:25watching that night. You can win
00:22:27up to 100 times your money here
00:22:29with as few as four
00:22:31correct picks. You pick anywhere from two to six players. You pick
00:22:33more or less on a particular stat.
00:22:35That's all you have to do.
00:22:37A lot of other fun features
00:22:39that you can take part in
00:22:41here with prize picks.
00:22:43As we said,
00:22:45it's right there for you. 100%
00:22:47deposit match up to $100
00:22:49when you use that code CLNS.
00:22:51Also, game time. Again,
00:22:53NBA
00:22:55season
00:22:57is over, but with this authorized
00:22:59ticket app, you can get into any
00:23:01game in town, any concert, really any
00:23:03hot ticket. There's a lot of cool things happening
00:23:05right now in and around Boston,
00:23:07especially the Red Sox, who are
00:23:09playing some really good ball.
00:23:11Those tickets are getting harder and harder to come by.
00:23:13If you want to use game time,
00:23:15go in there. The price goes down. The closer
00:23:17you get to the actual
00:23:19game, you get really cool features.
00:23:21Flash sales, zone
00:23:23deals, also
00:23:25panoramic view of your seat
00:23:27so you know exactly what it is you're going to look like.
00:23:29That's my favorite feature by far.
00:23:31I love that. I love that you
00:23:33see exactly what it looks like
00:23:35because sometimes you get stuck there.
00:23:37You got to Google
00:23:39rate my seat.
00:23:41Sometimes when you're going in to buy
00:23:43tickets other places and where
00:23:45is it? From concert view,
00:23:47am I going to be obscured,
00:23:49this and that. It's really
00:23:51cool that you see exactly what it's going to look
00:23:53like from your seat with that panoramic
00:23:55view. Is there going to be an overhang?
00:23:57It's really, really
00:23:59a cool feature that they have. You don't see anywhere
00:24:01else. Again, download the game time app.
00:24:03Code CLNS 20 bucks off your first
00:24:05purchase. Terms do apply. Use that
00:24:07game time app. Download it. Code CLNS
00:24:0920 off your first purchase.
00:24:11Terms do apply. Let's jump
00:24:13into the other breaking news
00:24:15of the day, which is less explosive
00:24:17more. From
00:24:19Hemelsbach, just to wrap this up real quick.
00:24:21He says, despite the release saying
00:24:23the ownership group intends to
00:24:25sell all of the shares of the team, that's just
00:24:27procedure and some current members ownership
00:24:29are still expected to ultimately
00:24:31stay on.
00:24:33We'll see what happens there.
00:24:35That's interesting. There's
00:24:37a clarification there.
00:24:39I didn't want to say the report
00:24:41initially from Adam Hemelsbach
00:24:43of the Globe because he had put out there. It was
00:24:45Wick who was out, not
00:24:47the entire group. Then the Celtics
00:24:49sent out that statement saying that the entire group,
00:24:51which does include some of those other people
00:24:53there and
00:24:55maybe as Hemelsbach
00:24:57just said, it's procedural
00:24:59and Pags or Bain
00:25:01or other people involved in that group there.
00:25:03I know Pags was former Bain capital
00:25:05there and there's a couple other people.
00:25:07You never know what gets involved with
00:25:09those guys. Pags has some pretty
00:25:11deep pockets too. You can see him wanting to hang
00:25:13around and be there.
00:25:15Who knows what his intention is?
00:25:17I'm not
00:25:19sure whether or not they can form another
00:25:21type of LLC where they just replace Wick
00:25:23and bring in someone else with some
00:25:25money and create their own
00:25:27group where
00:25:29Wick's no longer part of it, partnering with other people
00:25:31and create an extension of what the current ownership
00:25:33group is. I guess that's possible
00:25:35if they did want to stay on and
00:25:37maybe it's driven by Pags.
00:25:39I don't know. This is all speculative
00:25:41at this point, but as information
00:25:43comes out, we'll
00:25:45keep updating. Anybody in the chat
00:25:47sees anything they want to throw out there that they think is
00:25:49worth talking about, let's do it.
00:25:51Meantime, as we said,
00:25:53the other stuff here
00:25:55we wanted to talk about was Derek White.
00:25:57Crazy
00:25:59that this happened here.
00:26:01We were talking about it,
00:26:03whether he would take it. It's $31 million.
00:26:05I thought, as
00:26:07his agent, I would have advised him not to,
00:26:09but I thought he might, and he did.
00:26:11What was your reaction, Bobby?
00:26:15Thrilled. How can he not be?
00:26:17This is a monumental
00:26:19break for the Celtics here, that
00:26:21they don't have to go through free agency with them,
00:26:23that they don't have to potentially move here,
00:26:25and that they keep them at this price,
00:26:27which seemed borderline
00:26:29unthinkable after what he's
00:26:31produced over the last two years. We threw
00:26:33out those scenarios, John, where
00:26:35he just wants to stay in Boston,
00:26:37or he wants to give the team a break to keep
00:26:39everybody around, or he just wants
00:26:41this kind of security. Whatever reason it was,
00:26:43he just went ahead and did it.
00:26:45That
00:26:47seems rare in the
00:26:49league now, especially when you look
00:26:51at what some of these other guys are signing
00:26:53for. It's all upward of $200
00:26:55million for guys in this class,
00:26:57and you're keeping him for
00:26:59$60, $70,
00:27:01$80 million less than that?
00:27:03There's a scenario
00:27:05obviously here where
00:27:07he pushed it up to
00:27:09$175,000
00:27:11and you just can't do it.
00:27:13He would have been the first guy to break off
00:27:15from this group here. He, I
00:27:17think, is the most important outside of
00:27:19Brown and Tatum to keep
00:27:21with this group because he's the connector,
00:27:23he's the glue guy, he's
00:27:25the one that can do the most array
00:27:27of things on this roster outside
00:27:29of those two guys. When he's out,
00:27:31he's out the biggest boss.
00:27:33A little younger than the other three
00:27:35core guys. He's about
00:27:37to turn 30, as opposed
00:27:39to Holiday, who's going to be 34 next season.
00:27:41Porzingis is at that age too,
00:27:43but you've got the injury risk and obviously Al Horford.
00:27:45You're locking him up here for
00:27:47prime years
00:27:49of his career as
00:27:51he's really come into his own and entered
00:27:53his prime here. You're getting
00:27:55top-level Derek White, which is amazing.
00:27:57Yes.
00:27:59As I look
00:28:01here for the 2026 cap, that's
00:28:03an eighth guy added to the
00:28:05mix, depending on what this Cated deal
00:28:07ends up being.
00:28:09It's going to be Tatum at 54,
00:28:11it's going to be Brown at
00:28:1353, Holiday at 32,
00:28:15Porzingis 30, and White
00:28:17about 28 in the first year of his extension
00:28:19with Pritchard at 7.
00:28:21You throw Hauser into that
00:28:23mix at 10-ish with a
00:28:25repeater tax set to begin that year
00:28:27and you're
00:28:29talking $220-ish
00:28:31million in salary
00:28:33just between those eight guys
00:28:35and
00:28:37$200
00:28:39in tax with the repeater.
00:28:41That's where you
00:28:43hit that massive tax
00:28:45wall if you have this team here.
00:28:47It's going to, I think,
00:28:49make that Hauser negotiation a little bit more
00:28:51complicated, but as we talked about,
00:28:53John, their strategy seems to be
00:28:55keep all these guys under
00:28:57track, have the flexibility to
00:28:59move them, don't lose them for nothing,
00:29:01and figure it out in a year
00:29:03or two here.
00:29:05I think that's pretty prudent, I think
00:29:07that makes a lot of sense, and I think
00:29:09it's the best way to keep the team
00:29:11sustainable into the future.
00:29:13This is why we're
00:29:15selling the team here, the cost of the roster
00:29:17is
00:29:19astronomical. Every dollar
00:29:21is basically like $7 now,
00:29:23which is just crazy.
00:29:25It's just
00:29:27so expensive right now.
00:29:31It's pretty incredible that they're able to do this
00:29:33because, again,
00:29:35something's going to have to happen,
00:29:37but
00:29:39how many teams right now are scrambling
00:29:41to try to lock in some
00:29:43long-term assets here
00:29:45to be able to
00:29:47compete with the Celtics, who ran
00:29:49way ahead of the pack here,
00:29:51made their two trades, extended
00:29:53their guys, and now you've got your core
00:29:55five members locked up
00:29:57once you sign the
00:29:59Tatum extension, which, yeah,
00:30:01it's expensive as hell, and that second apron's
00:30:03going to be really hard to team build.
00:30:05Do you want a number?
00:30:07On what? What it costs? It's $400 million,
00:30:09right?
00:30:11$483 million.
00:30:13$483?
00:30:15Yeah, just off what they
00:30:17have right now for 26.
00:30:19$483 for next year?
00:30:21For 26, yeah.
00:30:23For 26?
00:30:25Okay, we're still not there
00:30:27when the Tatum extension
00:30:29kicks in.
00:30:31Yeah, this year's going to be
00:30:33like $270,000,
00:30:35but just think of that, going from non-repeater
00:30:37to repeater
00:30:39with a couple extensions.
00:30:41Obviously, Tatum is the big
00:30:43one there. Two trade deadlines
00:30:45ago, Wick was trying to stay under a line
00:30:47to get that kickback, right?
00:30:49For every team that didn't go over it,
00:30:51you got the $10 million kickback,
00:30:53and that's what he was doing.
00:30:55We're scraping bottom of the barrel here
00:30:57to get a refund,
00:30:59a rebate
00:31:01from the NBA
00:31:03for being under that.
00:31:05But now,
00:31:07exactly, $400 million
00:31:09plus, that's insane.
00:31:11So yeah, you're dropping that on somebody else,
00:31:13which is crazy,
00:31:15but that's going to happen.
00:31:17That's what's going to happen.
00:31:19You're talking about, yeah, exactly,
00:31:21a payroll that's going to exceed
00:31:23$200 something million, but you're going to pay
00:31:25almost twice that in the tax, which is bananas.
00:31:27So I would have to think
00:31:29at that point,
00:31:31you're probably either
00:31:33going to look to move
00:31:35before Zyngus isn't expiring at that point,
00:31:37or let that expire
00:31:39when it happens after that season.
00:31:41And
00:31:43potentially, obviously,
00:31:45it's going to depend on the value of all these guys,
00:31:47but if Holiday is still
00:31:49a valuable piece at that point who can really
00:31:51bolster another team,
00:31:53you just try to sell high on all that money
00:31:55and try to take as little money back
00:31:57for that as possible.
00:31:59Is that picks at that point, or young players
00:32:01who don't make much money?
00:32:03I think that's going to be the way you try to navigate this.
00:32:05Brown, Tatum,
00:32:07and White here to bargain
00:32:09contract, effectively, I think
00:32:11are going to be the core guys into the future
00:32:13who stick around here.
00:32:15But who knows? Maybe something
00:32:17changes, and it's going to take one of those
00:32:19core guys to be able to make this more
00:32:21sustainable. There's a lot that can happen, but
00:32:23what's clear is that $480 million,
00:32:25depending on what the ownership
00:32:27situation is at that point,
00:32:29even
00:32:31Warrior's owner, LakeUp, with all
00:32:33those revenue streams, and
00:32:35Balmer with the Clippers, and
00:32:37the Nets ownership
00:32:39group there, they didn't
00:32:41want to keep paying that
00:32:43kind of money. So
00:32:45certainly, given the revenue limitations
00:32:47of the Celtics team,
00:32:49they're not going to want to pay that money
00:32:51for very long anyway. Maybe you do
00:32:53it for that one year in 2026 if you're
00:32:55trying to repeat. But
00:32:57there's going to be some off-ramps, and
00:32:59to me,
00:33:01John, you keep Tatum and
00:33:03Brown at all costs,
00:33:05and everyone else is going to be on
00:33:07the table in terms of reducing costs
00:33:09at that point.
00:33:11I mean, it's very possible,
00:33:13and it's very possible. And honestly, I think
00:33:15it's likely that your core is
00:33:17Tatum, White, and Brown,
00:33:19and that Holiday and Porzingis,
00:33:21as they get later into those deals, you're going to
00:33:23try to move, and you're going to take the losses.
00:33:25That makes most sense, but also you're going to get
00:33:27less return. So you'll be taking on
00:33:29bad... You're either going to trade and
00:33:31expiring, or you're going to trade someone to a
00:33:33contender and take a step backwards
00:33:35while you are still contending. It's hard
00:33:37to get off those deals if they're
00:33:39still playing at a decent level and you're competitive,
00:33:41because you're not going to sell
00:33:43now, but realistically,
00:33:45if you want to sell higher, get any return,
00:33:47you have to trade them when they're playing well to someone
00:33:49who needs somebody like that.
00:33:51Make yourself worse, make them better
00:33:53for future financial relief. So it's not a
00:33:55fun problem to have
00:33:57in that regard. And that's the killer to me
00:33:59in this Porzingis injury.
00:34:01I know everyone's looking at it and saying,
00:34:03oh, it'll be back,
00:34:05it's fine, whatever.
00:34:07You have a limited time with this core
00:34:09together, all these pieces
00:34:11together, where they're playing at the top of their games.
00:34:13And for him to be hampered to this
00:34:15extent by that injury
00:34:17into year one of his extension, you only have
00:34:19two years with him here on this extension.
00:34:21Is most of this year, year
00:34:23one out of two, going to be spent rehabbing
00:34:25and recovering
00:34:27and managing, returning from that
00:34:29injury? That's not great.
00:34:31And so that's why I looked at that injury and was
00:34:33like, this is really bad.
00:34:35Beyond the fact that
00:34:37it's just a greater
00:34:39difficulty for this team trying to repeat.
00:34:41So that's a killer
00:34:43there, that you invest in
00:34:45these six guys, and one of them already is
00:34:47hurt to the extent that he is through two years.
00:34:49You got your championship, obviously,
00:34:51and he played a part in that.
00:34:53But it stinks, because
00:34:55you want him
00:34:57out there. You just want him out there.
00:34:59So that's all it's about, and he's not going to be out there
00:35:01for a big part of next season, which is a killer.
00:35:03But this deal with White,
00:35:05you should be doing backflips down the street
00:35:07about that. That is
00:35:09outstanding. I mean, again,
00:35:11you're seeing the role player money being
00:35:13given around, and
00:35:15you're going to tell me, you want to make
00:35:17arguments for Bridges? Yeah.
00:35:19There's some things that Bridges
00:35:21can do that White can't, but there's certainly plenty
00:35:23of things White does that Bridges
00:35:25doesn't, and he's also just one
00:35:27of the most complete basketball players in the
00:35:29NBA in terms of
00:35:31him being next to
00:35:33perfect and almost always doing
00:35:35the right thing and playing
00:35:37on both ends the way that he does.
00:35:39He's just
00:35:41been such a gem for them.
00:35:43In terms of value
00:35:45to the franchise and
00:35:47to this team and to this group of players,
00:35:49I mean, White
00:35:51is just pivotal.
00:35:53So
00:35:55this is an incredible deal for the Celtics
00:35:57here.
00:35:59It's also just amazing
00:36:01as we
00:36:03looked at
00:36:05what they have coming back.
00:36:07It's all of it.
00:36:09The whole team is coming back here,
00:36:11and you've got everyone else kind of
00:36:13jumping around trying to catch them.
00:36:15Among the things that happened,
00:36:17Paul George, this happened overnight,
00:36:19and it's definitely worth talking about.
00:36:21Paul George to Philly.
00:36:23You look at what happened here
00:36:25to the Knicks.
00:36:29Hold on one second.
00:36:31They traded
00:36:33for Bridges, gave up
00:36:35a lot of capital, but between
00:36:37that and OG Extension,
00:36:39they put themselves in a position where they
00:36:41couldn't bring back Hartenstein.
00:36:43The interesting thing here is
00:36:45Hartenstein, to me, was the scariest
00:36:47thing about facing the Knicks in that
00:36:49Eastern Conference Finals.
00:36:51I thought the only way that
00:36:53team could beat the Celtics was if they
00:36:55just destroyed them on the glass,
00:36:57and that's what I was worried that he was going to do.
00:36:59The collection of talent
00:37:01is outstanding. I like Brunson a lot.
00:37:03I like Bridges a lot. I like
00:37:05OG. OG's a terrific
00:37:07defensive player. It's a really good team.
00:37:09With OG being out, no
00:37:11Randall, I thought Hartenstein was the one
00:37:13thing that could maybe make that
00:37:15competitive, given how depleted
00:37:17that Knicks team was going to be.
00:37:19Just looking at
00:37:21what we have here, in terms of
00:37:23this, let's look at these
00:37:27things with over the Sixers.
00:37:29Here's what you might be looking at as a starting lineup.
00:37:31Maybe it's Batum instead of Oubre in there,
00:37:33but that's what you've got.
00:37:35Batum's gone.
00:37:37Oh, he's gone. Okay.
00:37:39Versus that,
00:37:41look, it's a good big three.
00:37:43You're still chasing a little bit if you're the Sixers.
00:37:45I think people aren't fully
00:37:47understanding how far ahead
00:37:49of the rest of the pack the Celtics were last year,
00:37:51because you're only looking at the playoffs and the
00:37:53injuries and what those teams looked like
00:37:55and saying, well, if they weren't hurt.
00:37:57If they weren't hurt, these teams were 14th.
00:37:59Again, Embiid missed a lot of time.
00:38:01The entire East was 14 games
00:38:03worse than the Celtics. Let's not be
00:38:05stupid. Celtics were
00:38:07a clear level above everybody,
00:38:09but yes, this tightens
00:38:11the gap.
00:38:13Yeah, I'll
00:38:15put them third, Philly,
00:38:17in that hierarchy. I still
00:38:19think I got New York ahead of them.
00:38:21I mean, how can you not when,
00:38:23as you show there, Lowry and Oubre would
00:38:25be in the starting lineup or whatever it would be.
00:38:27I know they brought Eric Gordon
00:38:29on a minimum, so it's probably
00:38:31that big three and a bunch of minimum guys.
00:38:33And Andre Drummond joined the
00:38:35group too there to back up Embiid, which is a pretty
00:38:37good move.
00:38:39I don't think there's enough depth there
00:38:41to make them scarier
00:38:43than the Knicks. But if they start
00:38:45to fill it out, somehow they bring Melton
00:38:47back and maybe they trade
00:38:49Paul Reed, who makes about $7 million
00:38:51for a wing piece or something like that.
00:38:53I think then you move them up to two.
00:38:55Obviously, Embiid
00:38:57as a single
00:38:59force is
00:39:01the scariest thing outside
00:39:03of the Giannis factor
00:39:05in Milwaukee there in the East.
00:39:07And I think if he's
00:39:09going full go with that roster,
00:39:11they become number two at that point.
00:39:13But you just have too many questions here.
00:39:15The depth, George as he continues
00:39:17to age here, what's he going to look like?
00:39:19And
00:39:21is Embiid even healthy
00:39:23in the playoffs, which he hasn't been
00:39:25ever. So that's
00:39:27why I put them behind the Knicks
00:39:29for now. There's a chance that they could rise
00:39:31above the Knicks as the biggest threat to Boston
00:39:33in the East. And again, they played
00:39:35Boston, I think, tougher
00:39:37than anyone in the East.
00:39:39That's why I put them behind the Knicks
00:39:41for now.
00:39:43I think that's why I put them behind the
00:39:45Knicks. I think that's why I put them
00:39:47behind the Knicks.
00:39:49I think that's why I put them behind the
00:39:51Knicks. I think that's why I put them
00:39:53behind the Knicks.
00:39:55I think that's why I put them
00:39:57behind the Knicks.
00:39:59I think that's why I put them
00:40:01behind the Knicks.
00:40:03I think that's why I put them
00:40:05behind the Knicks.
00:40:07I think that's why I put them
00:40:09behind the Knicks.
00:40:11I think that's why I put them
00:40:13behind the Knicks.
00:40:15I think that's why I put them
00:40:17behind the Knicks.
00:40:19I think that's why I put them
00:40:21behind the Knicks.
00:40:23I think that's why I put them
00:40:25behind the Knicks.
00:40:27I think that's why I put them
00:40:29behind the Knicks.
00:40:31I think that's why I put them
00:40:33behind the Knicks.
00:40:35I think that's why I put them
00:40:37behind the Knicks.
00:40:39I think that's why I put them
00:40:41behind the Knicks.
00:40:43I think that's why I put them
00:40:45behind the Knicks.
00:40:47I think that's why I put them
00:40:49behind the Knicks.
00:40:51I think that's why I put them
00:40:53behind the Knicks.
00:40:55I think that's why I put them
00:40:57behind the Knicks.
00:40:59I think that's why I put them
00:41:01behind the Knicks.
00:41:03I think that's why I put them
00:41:05behind the Knicks.
00:41:07I think that's why I put them
00:41:09behind the Knicks.
00:41:11I think that's why I put them
00:41:13behind the Knicks.
00:41:15I think that's why I put them
00:41:17behind the Knicks.
00:41:19I think that's why I put them
00:41:21behind the Knicks.
00:41:23I think that's why I put them
00:41:25behind the Knicks.
00:41:27I think that's why I put them
00:41:29behind the Knicks.
00:41:31I think that's why I put them
00:41:33behind the Knicks.
00:41:35I think that's why I put them
00:41:37behind the Knicks.
00:41:39I think that's why I put them
00:41:41behind the Knicks.
00:41:43I think that's why I put them
00:41:45behind the Knicks.
00:41:47I think that's why I put them
00:41:49behind the Knicks.
00:41:51I think that's why I put them
00:41:53behind the Knicks.
00:41:55I think that's why I put them
00:41:57behind the Knicks.
00:41:59I think that's why I put them
00:42:01behind the Knicks.
00:42:03I think that's why I put them
00:42:05behind the Knicks.
00:42:07I think that's why I put them
00:42:09behind the Knicks.
00:42:11I think that's why I put them
00:42:13behind the Knicks.
00:42:15I think that's why I put them
00:42:17behind the Knicks.
00:42:19I think that's why I put them
00:42:21behind the Knicks.
00:42:23I think that's why I put them
00:42:25behind the Knicks.
00:42:27I think that's why I put them
00:42:29behind the Knicks.
00:42:31I think that's why I put them
00:42:33behind the Knicks.
00:42:35I think that's why I put them
00:42:37behind the Knicks.
00:42:39I think that's why I put them
00:42:41behind the Knicks.
00:42:43I think that's why I put them
00:42:45behind the Knicks.
00:42:47I think that's why I put them
00:42:49behind the Knicks.
00:42:51I think that's why I put them
00:42:53behind the Knicks.
00:42:55I think that's why I put them
00:42:57behind the Knicks.
00:42:59I think that's why I put them
00:43:01behind the Knicks.
00:43:03I think that's why I put them
00:43:05behind the Knicks.
00:43:07I think that's why I put them
00:43:09behind the Knicks.
00:43:11I think that's why I put them
00:43:13behind the Knicks.
00:43:15I think that's why I put them
00:43:17behind the Knicks.
00:43:19I think that's why I put them
00:43:21behind the Knicks.
00:43:23I think that's why I put them
00:43:25behind the Knicks.
00:43:27I think that's why I put them
00:43:29behind the Knicks.
00:43:31I think that's why I put them
00:43:33behind the Knicks.
00:43:35I think that's why I put them
00:43:37behind the Knicks.
00:43:39I think that's why I put them
00:43:41behind the Knicks.
00:43:43I think that's why I put them
00:43:45behind the Knicks.
00:43:47I think that's why I put them
00:43:49behind the Knicks.
00:43:51I think that's why I put them
00:43:53behind the Knicks.
00:43:55I think that's why I put them
00:43:57behind the Knicks.
00:43:59I think that's why I put them
00:44:01behind the Knicks.
00:44:03I think that's why I put them
00:44:05behind the Knicks.
00:44:07I think that's why I put them
00:44:09behind the Knicks.
00:44:11I think that's why I put them
00:44:13behind the Knicks.
00:44:15I think that's why I put them
00:44:17behind the Knicks.
00:44:19I think that's why I put them
00:44:21behind the Knicks.
00:44:23I think that's why I put them
00:44:25behind the Knicks.
00:44:27I think that's why I put them
00:44:29behind the Knicks.
00:44:31I think that's why I put them
00:44:33behind the Knicks.
00:44:35I think that's why I put them
00:44:37behind the Knicks.
00:44:39I think that's why I put them
00:44:41behind the Knicks.
00:44:43I think that's why I put them
00:44:45behind the Knicks.
00:44:47I think that's why I put them
00:44:49behind the Knicks.
00:44:51I think that's why I put them
00:44:53behind the Knicks.

00:52:23I think that's why I put them

00:52:27I think that's why I put them

00:52:31I think that's why I put them
00:52:33behind the Knicks.
00:52:35I think that's why I put them
00:52:37behind the Knicks.
00:52:39I think that's why I put them
00:52:41behind the Knicks.
00:52:43I'm going Oklahoma City.
00:52:45I'm going Oklahoma City.
00:52:47I'm not even dealing with the West.
00:52:49I didn't deal with the West
00:52:51all year. I think people
00:52:53fixated on Denver all year long
00:52:55and that was the reason they thought the Celtics couldn't win a championship.
00:52:57I thought that was a silly thing to do.
00:52:59You never know who comes out.
00:53:01It doesn't really matter.
00:53:03You're really only concerned with the East.
00:53:05When you get there, you get there.
00:53:07I think they're in great shape right now
00:53:09with the moves that they've made.
00:53:11Denver going backwards
00:53:13because you just lost KCP.
00:53:17They might not be in the top five anymore.
00:53:19They might not be in the top five anymore.
00:53:21I think there's a little recency
00:53:23bias there with watching them go out.
00:53:25Losing KCP really hurts them
00:53:27for sure there.
00:53:31I'm not worried about the West at all.
00:53:33I only look at the East.
00:53:35Who's your top five in the East?
00:53:37I think it's the obvious
00:53:39and I'll put five in as Miami.
00:53:41You have the Celtics,
00:53:43Knicks, Bucks
00:53:45and Sixers
00:53:47in different order.
00:53:49I might go Knicks two, Sixers three, Bucks four.
00:53:51I think it's actually pretty close two through four
00:53:53with the Celtics still a healthy Celtics team.
00:53:57Is Indy on the list?
00:53:59A bit above them.
00:54:01Indy's going to be right there in the mix.
00:54:03Dangerous, but I don't think they've got the horses yet
00:54:05to compete with those big boys.
00:54:07I like Miami. I like Orlando.
00:54:09It's a lot of the teams that made it last year.
00:54:11It's funny, you talk about Cleveland.
00:54:13I don't know where they fit in,
00:54:15but I can't imagine.
00:54:17I think it's fair to say, Bobby,
00:54:19that right now
00:54:21the Celtics are flat out running it back.
00:54:23The Knicks,
00:54:25probably Orlando,
00:54:27probably Philadelphia are all going to be
00:54:29better next year.
00:54:31I don't know who else sneaks in from the outside in.
00:54:33I think the eight that made the playoffs
00:54:35you're looking at. Could one or two teams
00:54:37surprise you and fall a little lower than you
00:54:39think or rise? Yeah, it's possible.
00:54:41I don't know that anybody rises to the
00:54:43level of
00:54:45the Celtics healthy
00:54:47yet, but that first couple of months
00:54:49are going to be interesting because you're going to be
00:54:51shorthanded.
00:54:53You suffer one more injury to another
00:54:55player that keeps them out
00:54:57for a little bit of time. Yeah, Celtics could take
00:54:59a couple of lumps early in the season, but
00:55:01it's competitive.
00:55:03It'll be more competitive.
00:55:05Yeah, health is
00:55:07everything here, obviously, and
00:55:09I think that includes Boston. They were
00:55:11able to sustain some injuries last year.
00:55:13I still think they'll do a pretty good job with that this
00:55:15year, but Porzingis
00:55:17is out for so long that
00:55:19an additional injury during that stretch could
00:55:21put you in a very difficult position.
00:55:23It's going to be important for some of these younger guys on the
00:55:25roster to be able to step in and contribute.
00:55:27Keita stays,
00:55:29which is next to Wicksel
00:55:31team and Derek White
00:55:33extending a smaller headline, but
00:55:35an important one. They're keeping
00:55:37him on a long-term deal. He's going to be in that
00:55:39mix of guys who help back up Porzingis
00:55:41next year, and if they don't add to that
00:55:43front court, they still have two open roster
00:55:45spots, and Tillman and Brousset are still out there,
00:55:47but Keita is moving up that
00:55:49hierarchy into next year.
00:55:51Yeah.
00:55:53Some real opportunity
00:55:55for him to step in and do some stuff
00:55:57at the start of next year, which I think is exciting
00:55:59for some people. I know you're one of the
00:56:01guys who's higher on him, John. I know Gary,
00:56:03who we had on here a week or two ago, is
00:56:05pretty high on him.
00:56:07I'm high on the potential,
00:56:09because
00:56:11like I said,
00:56:13I always use the Rob comparison,
00:56:15not because I'm comparing him to Rob,
00:56:17but the reason I liked Rob as much as I did
00:56:19was focusing
00:56:21less on
00:56:23what they can't do
00:56:25and whether or not some of their skills
00:56:27rise to the level of elite.
00:56:29I think Keita can do a couple of things
00:56:31at a really high level. The offensive
00:56:33rebounding and the putbacks, and again, we've seen
00:56:35the importance of that, saves you
00:56:37from some bad possessions and offensive
00:56:39stagnation at times,
00:56:41and it's just a really good thing to have
00:56:43when you have it.
00:56:45Rob, we spent all of this time
00:56:47looking at Rob and being like, man, when he's
00:56:49out there, the offense
00:56:51because of the
00:56:53shooting and this and that, and you can't
00:56:55you're so worried about
00:56:57you don't have enough shooters on the floor, and
00:56:59I don't know if you can have him out there, and then you'd
00:57:01look at the numbers, and the offensive rating would be
00:57:0320 points better with Williams on the floor
00:57:05because of the gravity and the lob
00:57:07threat and all of the things that he would bring.
00:57:09Sometimes it's not arriving at your
00:57:11destination the way you expected,
00:57:13but you're still getting there.
00:57:15Someone like Keita might be able to provide you
00:57:17something that's different
00:57:19than
00:57:21what the traditional
00:57:23style of play that Celtics is under
00:57:25Joe Mizzoula, but that might be
00:57:27useful.
00:57:29I like him. I like the potential.
00:57:31I want to see where his growth is,
00:57:33and you need cheap players.
00:57:35You want to be able to pay backups
00:57:37a couple million dollars,
00:57:39and you're going to need players like that.
00:57:41You have to at this point.
00:57:43You really have to, so you need your
00:57:45rookies. You need Keita. You need Jordan
00:57:47Walsh. You need those guys to be
00:57:49at least 9, 10,
00:57:5111 playable, if not bumping
00:57:53up that depth chart at some point or another
00:57:55would be ideal.
00:57:57Being your role players or your
00:57:59bench players is great because
00:58:01you can't be paying mid-levels
00:58:03and $25 million and $30 million
00:58:05to guys coming in off the bench
00:58:07there to round things out. You're going to have to find a way
00:58:09to get cheaper and better.
00:58:11The Keita costs
00:58:13you nothing for
00:58:15next year, which is great.
00:58:17What a find, and I got
00:58:19lucky because the Kings waved him.
00:58:21They invested in him a couple of years
00:58:23after bringing him in the draft,
00:58:25and he
00:58:27looked like an exciting piece for them, and then they
00:58:29just cut him for JaVale McGee, which was
00:58:31really weird, and then the Celtics signed him for a two-way.
00:58:33That was a great
00:58:35find, and I was
00:58:37pretty excited when they signed him because that's
00:58:39a guy you saw out there at Summer League his first
00:58:41two years and stood out.
00:58:43Obviously, the 7-foot
00:58:45stature, the frame, but he would
00:58:47dominate out there in Vegas,
00:58:49and then he was the G League MVP
00:58:51runner-up, I think, the year
00:58:53after that.
00:58:55This was a great find.
00:58:57Is there Rob potential?
00:58:59Probably not
00:59:01to that extent, but is there
00:59:03high, high-level backup potential
00:59:05here? That seems to be
00:59:07the case.
00:59:09What do you always say, John? The 4A?
00:59:11Because he's way too good for the G
00:59:13League, but still not quite there at
00:59:15the NBA level, but he gave you those couple weeks
00:59:17last year where he was pretty good
00:59:19in a full backup role.
00:59:21Can you build on that if you're him?
00:59:23Can you have a big first month or two here
00:59:25if you're him while you're in that position?
00:59:27Right now, he's your third center,
00:59:29John.
00:59:33He is.
00:59:35Get ready, Katie. You're
00:59:37going to get called on early and often if
00:59:39this is the front court, and we'll see
00:59:41what happens. Still not a ton of noise on
00:59:43Tillman.
00:59:45I was going through some of the teams yesterday.
00:59:47Could a Memphis
00:59:49return make sense for him? I know they
00:59:51brought in Edie. They still have some money
00:59:53to spend out there.
00:59:55New Orleans doesn't have a center at all
00:59:57right now with
00:59:59Valenchunas going to Washington, which was a weird one.
01:00:01They're probably in that
01:00:03mix. He could help them a little bit.
01:00:05Signings like that always blow
01:00:07my mind. I'm like, what are you signing?
01:00:09That blew my mind.
01:00:11Weird to me.
01:00:13The thing with a team like that is
01:00:15you have to sign someone.
01:00:17I guess they chose Valenchunas.
01:00:21Is this still going? No, we don't
01:00:23have. Are we doing this code?
01:00:27Try it.
01:00:29I'm sipping out of my garden report
01:00:31because the third center made me think about it.
01:00:33I'm sipping out of my garden report mug, which you can
01:00:35absolutely get on our merch store.
01:00:37Go to shop.clnsmedia.com.
01:00:39Use the code
01:00:41summer24, 20% off here throughout the
01:00:43summer if you want to get in on
01:00:45some of our fine stuff. As we know,
01:00:47Jimmy Toscano has this thing loaded
01:00:49with some cool, cool, cool
01:00:51merch, including the hard hats
01:00:53and the name drop t-shirt
01:00:55and a bunch of different things. Again, shop.clnsmedia.com.
01:00:57Go check it out.
01:00:59Lots of fun stuff.
01:01:01Honestly, I was blown away by
01:01:03the amount of sales that we had
01:01:05through the playoff run and the finals
01:01:07and the parade and this and that. It was really fun
01:01:09seeing people out there, which was great.
01:01:11Check it out if you want to get there.
01:01:13clnsmedia.com.
01:01:15The majority of the money goes in
01:01:17Jimmy Toscano's pocket. I'll just let you guys know
01:01:19that.
01:01:21Well, that's not true.
01:01:23Thanks to Jimmy for taking
01:01:25the lead on this stuff.
01:01:27It looks like
01:01:29that Clay deal could be a
01:01:31sign-in trade.
01:01:33All the details are starting to come out.
01:01:3550 million.
01:01:37Josh Green goes to Charlotte in the deal.
01:01:39We'll see what Charlotte's
01:01:41sending out there.
01:01:43Less than the Celtics,
01:01:45less than the Warriors had offered.
01:01:47According to Woj,
01:01:49there was
01:01:51state tax implications
01:01:53and wanting to go somewhere where he thought he had a better
01:01:55chance of winning a title.
01:01:57A little bit of shade there
01:01:59in terms of at least
01:02:01the reporting of that.
01:02:03As you said, gone.
01:02:05Two-year, 10.6 million goes to the Clips.
01:02:07He's out.
01:02:09That's it.
01:02:11Josh Green to Charlotte there in the Clay deal.
01:02:13Agent Greg Lawrence.
01:02:15I'm reading the
01:02:17Woj tweet. Thompson had
01:02:19four years for more money taking less
01:02:21chance to win a championship and
01:02:23the state tax situation.
01:02:25They have
01:02:27Kyrie, Luca, Clay,
01:02:29Najee Marshall came in
01:02:31who's a decent 3 and D wing from New
01:02:33Orleans.
01:02:35PJ Washington's still there.
01:02:37Gafford's still there.
01:02:39Lively's still there. Obviously, the Mavs
01:02:41caught their own breaks on the way to the finals.
01:02:43That's looking like a team that could be
01:02:45back in that
01:02:47position next year. At least
01:02:49have as good of a chance as anyone else out there.
01:02:51You have to think Luca's going to motivate.
01:02:53Do you see Luca's playing in Europe right now
01:02:55by the way?
01:02:57He was playing
01:02:59a tune-up for Slovenia
01:03:01the other day.
01:03:03I thought he was
01:03:05in those finals.
01:03:07Such bullshit.
01:03:09I said
01:03:11that from the get-go, Bobby. I'm like, give me
01:03:13a break that Luca's injured.
01:03:15He's freaking fine.
01:03:17He's out there playing.
01:03:19I wouldn't
01:03:21love it if I'm Dallas. You know these guys.
01:03:23These European guys.
01:03:25They will not
01:03:27sit out these international competitions
01:03:29unless
01:03:31they need surgery
01:03:33that's going to keep them out for six months.
01:03:35It pains them to
01:03:37miss these things.
01:03:39The entire nation
01:03:41looks to these guys so heavily.
01:03:43Luca doesn't
01:03:45play. It's basically just shutting
01:03:47down the program.
01:03:49You can't not do it if you're him.
01:03:51The national
01:03:53pride there in these guys.
01:03:55I'm pretty bummed Porzingis can't go for a live
01:03:57because they were going to be in the Olympics
01:03:59which is a big bummer there.
01:04:01He was obviously way too hurt
01:04:03to do that.
01:04:05It's going to be fun. August or late July.
01:04:07We're about a month away from that.
01:04:09It's always fun.
01:04:11The international
01:04:13competition is so good now. You've got
01:04:15some really good talent on Canada
01:04:17and several Celtics
01:04:19there which should be a ton of fun.
01:04:21Let's wrap it up here, Bobby.
01:04:23As we said, we'll
01:04:25rifle through some of our
01:04:27breaking news as it came.
01:04:29The first thing that happened was
01:04:31Derek White signed a four-year $125.9 million
01:04:33extension. We thought the entire
01:04:35show was going to be on that. We actually spent
01:04:37probably the least amount of time on it.
01:04:39It's the best news of the day
01:04:41that Derek White signed.
01:04:43He took that team-friendly deal.
01:04:45What a deal.
01:04:47Fair amount of money on the table
01:04:49if he wanted to stick it out and play one more year.
01:04:51It's legit.
01:04:53It's a lot of money but well worth it.
01:04:55A hometown discount
01:04:57is a lot of money when you add it up
01:04:59with all the rest of the money they're spending.
01:05:01This is a legit hometown
01:05:03discount that Derek White came.
01:05:05I'm putting it on you
01:05:07people out there. You guys made this happen.
01:05:09Derek White loves you.
01:05:11He loves being here and he loves being in Boston.
01:05:13You love when athletes
01:05:15do this because it doesn't always
01:05:17work this way and it doesn't work both ways.
01:05:19I've seen franchises show
01:05:21people the door who really wanted
01:05:23to be here.
01:05:25He has truly become an all-time
01:05:27beloved Celtic.
01:05:29You think of his Game 6 moment,
01:05:31the consistency, the ceiling
01:05:33razor he became.
01:05:35I was going back watching some
01:05:37O'Garn reports the other night, John,
01:05:39and some of the freakouts we had in 2022.
01:05:41His arrival was the real...
01:05:43His arrival changed
01:05:45everything in many ways that year.
01:05:47It shifted them from that maddening
01:05:49inconsistency to
01:05:51a bona fide contender
01:05:53when he arrived.
01:05:55They've been to three straight East Finals
01:05:57and two NBA Finals with him here.
01:05:59Amazing.
01:06:01An all-time role player, really,
01:06:03in Boston, he's become here.
01:06:05He just gets better every year, too.
01:06:07There's a real work ethic
01:06:09that's pretty obvious
01:06:11from his standpoint, too.
01:06:13He's just fallen in love with the city.
01:06:15It's awesome.
01:06:17I think this is something people can be really excited about
01:06:19and try to put some quick stuff to the side.
01:06:21That was the other
01:06:23major news here.
01:06:25We'll even start at the beginning of the day.
01:06:27As we had mentioned, Paul George overnight
01:06:29agreed to that deal with the Sixers.
01:06:31We did think that that was likely to happen.
01:06:33Other things that happened...
01:06:35Mavericks, as we mentioned, signed Clay Thompson
01:06:37to a three-year $50 million deal.
01:06:39He's leaving Golden State
01:06:41after a terrific run there.
01:06:43Isaiah Hartenstein,
01:06:45three-year $87 million
01:06:47deal with OKC. OKC
01:06:49really starting to look
01:06:51like they might be the team to beat in the West
01:06:53next year with what they've done.
01:06:55Then the bombshell news here
01:06:57with the Celtics ownership group
01:06:59led by Wick Grousbeck planning to make the team
01:07:01available for sale.
01:07:03By the end of this year, Wick Grousbeck would
01:07:05remain on as the
01:07:07governor up until 28,
01:07:09whenever it would
01:07:11pass on to the next group.
01:07:13The sale, expected to be finalized this year,
01:07:15doesn't mean everyone is gone.
01:07:17There's some reported
01:07:19interest from some of the other members
01:07:21of Boston Basketball LLC,
01:07:23namely Steve Pagliuca, to remain
01:07:25on in some capacity. We'll see how that goes.
01:07:27It's going to be interesting.
01:07:29What's your
01:07:31lasting memory of Grousbeck's
01:07:33ownership tenure?
01:07:35How are you going to remember it?
01:07:37It's impossible not to
01:07:39remember it for now
01:07:41because this was that
01:07:43all-in push that we were concerned that he
01:07:45wouldn't make.
01:07:47Again, it's so weird to say
01:07:49one of the poorer owners
01:07:51for a person who's got
01:07:53half a billion in net worth
01:07:55outside of the franchise.
01:07:57It has to be that
01:07:59commitment here to
01:08:01pushing in here. I'm not an
01:08:03owner guy. I don't
01:08:05think they deserve tons of credit.
01:08:07I think they can get in the way
01:08:09way more often than they can
01:08:11do positive things. I think
01:08:13they should be a blank checkbook and whoever
01:08:15they hire to make decisions, they should just
01:08:17let them make the decisions. If you don't like the
01:08:19decisions they make, bring someone else to make
01:08:21decisions. I don't think an owner
01:08:23should be part of the conversation
01:08:25in sports at all
01:08:27unless they're bad.
01:08:29To me, it's just don't mess it up.
01:08:31I bought it. Other
01:08:33people run and manage it. I'm just
01:08:35here off to the side.
01:08:37I will give credit because
01:08:39he could have gone the bad route
01:08:41of that. You do
01:08:43like the people who are fans first
01:08:45because you feel like they feel what you feel.
01:08:47It isn't just a vanity that
01:08:49you can tell your rich friends at the Yacht Club,
01:08:51I want a title. You're more
01:08:53part of the fabric of the community.
01:08:55I think that along with
01:08:57opening up the checkbook
01:08:59here and letting these guys go
01:09:01after it with this team
01:09:03was great.
01:09:05That's what I will say.
01:09:07I don't mean to be
01:09:09a jerk about it.
01:09:13It drives me nuts that the owners
01:09:15talk first after a championship
01:09:17or that they take credit for things.
01:09:19It's a fair point.
01:09:21I hate that.
01:09:23Everyone else did it.
01:09:25I think the one thing
01:09:27you can mention with him that was pretty important
01:09:29and that persisted through almost the
01:09:31entirety of the time he was here
01:09:33was bringing in Danny.
01:09:35That coincided with him buying the team.
01:09:39Ainge brings in KG
01:09:41and Pierce.
01:09:43Ainge is here for the Tatum and Brown drafts
01:09:45and the KG and Pierce trades.
01:09:47To talk about what you mentioned
01:09:49there, bringing in the right guy
01:09:51and letting him make the decisions,
01:09:53bringing in Danny
01:09:55to lead the team was about
01:09:57as good of a decision as you can make.
01:10:01Exactly.
01:10:03Like I said, those are the big decisions
01:10:05here.
01:10:07Some stuff was questioned.
01:10:09What we thought firing Brad up
01:10:11in a money-saving move when he clearly
01:10:13didn't want to be there anymore,
01:10:15we weren't sure that was going to work.
01:10:17That could have been atrocious.
01:10:19The Imeo-Doka situation was weird,
01:10:21but it ended up working out because
01:10:23Missoula ended up being great for this team
01:10:25and they won a title.
01:10:27You don't really know.
01:10:29Really, he's had his hand
01:10:31in three major decisions.
01:10:33That would be Danny,
01:10:35the situation that happened there with Brad,
01:10:37which was good because Brad ended up being good
01:10:39and Udoka was a terrific coach in that first year.
01:10:41How that situation was handled
01:10:43and now
01:10:45it's not really mattering anymore because
01:10:47where they ended up ended up being better.
01:10:49The last thing was opening that checkbook
01:10:51up there and
01:10:53getting it done.
01:10:55He presided over 2008,
01:10:57but Danny made those moves.
01:10:59As I said, hiring the right person matters
01:11:01and he did twice.
01:11:05Short of opening up the checkbook,
01:11:07the most important thing you're going to do
01:11:09is make sure you put the right person in charge.
01:11:11He's done it twice now. That's a big, big deal.
01:11:15We'll see. Will he talk in the near future
01:11:17about that decision to move on?
01:11:19Will we get a white press conference?
01:11:21I'd assume we might
01:11:23just given how exciting that is.
01:11:25That'll probably all come in time.
01:11:27Was it July 9th?
01:11:29They can start negotiating with Hauser?
01:11:31Sixth, I thought.
01:11:37I thought it was one week from the time
01:11:39it opened, but maybe not.
01:11:41That makes sense.
01:11:43I'm sure we'll get a Hauser news in a week.
01:11:45That just seems
01:11:47to be in the bag
01:11:49at this point with how much they want to get that done.
01:11:51I'm sure Hauser is in a similar
01:11:53place to where White is here,
01:11:55where he just wants to be part of this,
01:11:57wants a little long-term security.
01:11:59All of a sudden, your top
01:12:01six, seven are in tact in the near future.
01:12:03I'm sure Horford's going to be
01:12:05a year-by-year thing at this point.
01:12:09Maybe he comes back at a minimum
01:12:11if he comes back again.
01:12:13I think that's exactly right.
01:12:15That's how it's going to happen.
01:12:17I am curious with the Hauser stuff, though.
01:12:19I thought it was possible that Hauser
01:12:21would say,
01:12:23sign the $2 million
01:12:25option for this year
01:12:27and then figure it out next year.
01:12:29If you can fit it or you're making other moves,
01:12:31maybe do that, but you might have to just accept
01:12:33that he's gone.
01:12:37Hauser starts to feel like a real luxury
01:12:39item for this team.
01:12:43It's not that he's not good.
01:12:45All things considered, you want him
01:12:47on the team versus not.
01:12:49But you got to start making hard choices.
01:12:51I do wonder if Hauser's a casualty
01:12:53in terms of extension there.
01:12:55I could see this going the way of Grant,
01:12:57which is the deal that they want to sign him to
01:12:59isn't really the deal that he's
01:13:01willing to take, so we'll see.
01:13:03Yeah, and certainly he's got that tough
01:13:05agent there in Glushon who hasn't given him the
01:13:07many breaks. He commanded
01:13:09the Jalen extension, the Drew one,
01:13:11which was pretty sizable there.
01:13:13I don't know if you're getting any
01:13:15friendly discount there from him.
01:13:17We'll see. That's obviously
01:13:19another big one to look out for them.
01:13:21Yeah.
01:13:23That's it. We're done. A ton
01:13:25of news
01:13:27today. We didn't expect
01:13:31less than 24 hours after the start
01:13:33of free agency. The Celtics doing
01:13:35a lot of things, bringing back Luke,
01:13:37bringing back Keita, re-signing White
01:13:39and selling the frigging team.
01:13:41Didn't expect that we'd have this much
01:13:43news in such a short period of time,
01:13:45but we're here for all of it. Bobby Manning's
01:13:47got you covered, so check out
01:13:49clnsmedia.com and subscribe to
01:13:51both our YouTube channels here, the main channel
01:13:53as well as Celtics All Access.
01:13:55We'll have more stuff on this
01:13:57and
01:13:59any and all breaking news as it comes.
01:14:01We've got you
01:14:03covered. Tons of other great
01:14:05podcasts on the network as well,
01:14:07and I'm sure everyone's going to be talking about this news
01:14:09and giving their take and their spin
01:14:11on everything that happened, but Celtics running
01:14:13back well-positioned,
01:14:15heading into next year, injuries aside,
01:14:17to potentially
01:14:19make a run at Banner
01:14:2119. Big piece of it today,
01:14:23locking in Derek White long-term
01:14:25to a team-friendly extension, so that's
01:14:27certainly good news. Good
01:14:29news, we get to hang out with you guys again.
01:14:31We were happy to do it. We'll be back
01:14:33should there be any breaking news. Otherwise,
01:14:35follow us on Twitter here for notifications of
01:14:37our next live show. We will jump back on
01:14:39later in the week
01:14:41and break it down and talk about
01:14:43some other stuff and maybe bring some of the other guys
01:14:45on board, Jimmy, Sherrod
01:14:47and Josue, and get their take
01:14:49on everything that's gone on
01:14:51in the last 24 to 48 hours.
01:14:53It's been a lot of fun and a lot of activity.
01:14:55Until then, we will see you guys
01:14:57later. Take care.
01:14:59Wait, Ahmed's got an outro for us,
01:15:01I think. No, he doesn't.
01:15:03He said he was going to work on an outro.
01:15:05He had a phenomenal
01:15:07game.
01:15:09Porfrit's out.
