00:14Hoy shoots through and just, just harpoons, doing about 125 miles an hour, down into the right
00:22hander. And he's lost it! Into the gravel trap, into the tar wall, he's broken our camera lens.
00:28That'll be six grand, please, Derek. But I don't suppose Derek's too worried about that.
00:34Down through the gears to about 110 and off, slam bang into the tyres. That's it, thank you,
00:41goodbye. That's Smith ahead, he's pulled sideways Smith, you can see why. Up, uphillward hill,
00:47into Druids, and bang! Kay hits him, sorry, he says, holds his hands up, but it's too late.
00:53Now we're with Paul Radicec, tenth on the grid, and Menuh loses the Renault,
00:58hits the Toyota, now we're alongside Patrick Watts' Peugeot. Down to Graham Hill Bend,
01:03it's really wet here, turns in, and he's lost it! Paul Radicec goes off onto the grass,
01:09that's Patrick Watts, he's gone off too in the red-white Peugeot. The rest come streaming round.
01:15Number 23 is Richard Kaye's Ford Mondeo. And he's off, into the grass, into the tyres,
01:23up to Paddock Bend, and David Brabham in the white BMW is up into sixth position,
01:28and Cleland is off, into the gravel trap. There'll be gravel everywhere in that Vauxhall.
01:34John's little problem as he comes down to Paddock. Down through the gears,
01:38turns in, goes wide, into the gravel.
01:45Uphillward hill and Cox, that's Charlie Cox spinning, he's lost the Mondeo, sixth position.
01:52But we're with Leslie now in the Honda Accord, going into Surtees,
01:56going out of Surtees, going out of Surtees backwards. Now fifth, and we're with Tim Sugden,
02:03going into Surtees Bend, and he's doing exactly the same thing as David Leslie did in the Honda
02:08Accord. He's going off, that's Bailey ahead as he goes into the Brabham straight.
02:14Rydell pulling out to pass. Look out! That is a colossal accident, 130 miles an hour.
02:21Radice hit somebody, didn't see who it was. So he was a bit slow, and I was half alongside him,
02:27entering the pit straight. We're on the straight, and he just closed the door more and more,
02:32and just squeezed me against the pit wall.
02:44At Surtees.
02:47Wide, close, and Cleland hits Rydell. Slips sideways, hits Rydell, and he's off again.
02:55Down to Paddock. Cleland is going through on the inside, he's lost it.
03:00In a big way, into the gravel again, and off. Oh, John!
03:07Cleland turns in. Now something's happened, I don't know what, but he was impossibly fast,
03:13and John Cleland is very experienced. Down to Graham Hill, Ben. Now, Bert is on the inside
03:19this time. Surely he's going through. He's gone through, he's up into fourth, and Sugden hits
03:24Menuh. Menuh goes off in the Renault. The Swiss driver is off, we're with him now.
03:29Bert passes Sugden in front of us. Menuh tries to follow him through. Sugden turns in, crash,
03:36bang, off, onto the grass, spins it round. Warwick is ahead on the left. On the right,
03:43his teammate Simone tries to pass Harrison, hits Derry Warwick, and then Brabham hits him as well.
03:51As the race was about to be stopped following this enormous accident
03:55suffered by Charlie Cox in the Mondeo.
03:58He was seemingly not seriously injured, and that's miraculous after an accident of this scale.
04:07But the car was wrecked, and that plus medical precautions would keep Charlie Cox out of the
04:12championship for four months. As soon as he hit the brakes, it's as if one rear wheel locked before
04:17the race, and it just kept on locking and went off into the grass and rolled various times.
04:22So, I mean, it's a big accident, definitely.
04:26And Cleland is going through, up into sixth position, but there's contact.
04:32Get off, says Cleland, and that's goodbye to another John Cleland mirror, as Watts goes
04:37through and off. Cleland's hit him, bang, off goes the Peugeot, as Watts goes through on the left.
04:45Cleland turns in, Watts runs wide, Cleland hits the Peugeot, which spins off, and he's out of the race.
04:54In they go, whoops, there's a collision, Sugden has hit Burt, that's Kelvin Burt's Mondeo,
04:59into the gravel, struggling to rejoin, he's back onto the tarmac.
05:04Stones everywhere, oh, that's a spin-up, it's Hamish Irvine's Peugeot.
05:09140 miles an hour towards Brooklyn, the left-hander, turn in, bash, and he is attacking Will Hoy,
05:17trying to go through, Will is running wide, Thompson's trying to go through on the inside,
05:21is he succeeding? There he is, we're with him now, whoo, and teats that young James, Hoy goes through,
05:29whoo, and teats that Will from John Cleland. Cleland passes both of them, we're in car with
05:34Brabham, up to Copse, and the BMW stumbles off, and so we, terrific crash, Brabham is into the gravel,
05:42Patrick dives up the inside, turns in, Bailey's already turned, Watts hits him, Bailey spins out,
05:49chasing the BMWs, up to Copse, starts to turn in, and there is Harrison, and he hits Brabham,
05:57so that's what happened, and Burt is attacking through the middle, and he's hit Thompson,
06:01who hits Rydell, Thompson spins, he's gone off onto the grass, what a start,
06:07but Rydell and Raticic are still going, watch Burt on the right, he tries to dive between Rydell and
06:13Thompson, the gap narrows, there's no way through, Thompson spins sideways after the impact, that's
06:22Rydell ahead, Rydell gets away, super start from Burt, but look what happened, into Thompson,
06:29off goes Thompson, past goes Sugden, Burt is third as he turns in, but goes wide onto the grass,
06:37and out of the race, now here's a replay from Leslie's car, up to Ireland at 130 miles an hour,
06:43he starts to turn in, that's Derek Warwick's Alfa Romeo, contact, Warwick goes off, and so does David
06:50Leslie, up over the tyres, and down, in front of us is Tarquini, they go round the left-hander,
06:57look ahead of them though, and you can see, there is Leslie going over the tyre walls,
07:02Warwick has already gone off between John Cleland and Alan Menu, that's Tim Sugden,
07:09and Raticic goes off, poor Raticic slides off in the Ford Mondeo, now this is Ireland Bend,
07:16it's 130 miles an hour, up to the right-hander at Michelle Hairpin, and he just understeers off
07:22into the gravel track, down to the fast left-hander at Cascades, Bailey turns in, and
07:29Watts has hit him, Bailey spins, off he goes, Watts goes round to the right, someone else is off too,
07:37it's Tarquini, the champion, number one is last, and he is out, Neil fights back, going past on the
07:45right, goes in front of Kay's car, and Tarquini runs wide, onto the grass, out of Druids, Menu,
07:53Thompson, Rydell, into Graham Hill Bend, the left-hander, Thompson is running wide, he's onto
07:59the grass, Rydell swerves, there's a collision, this is chaos, Brabham spins at the white BMW,
08:07and there's cars all over the place, what a start, this is what David saw, Sugden on the right,
08:14Wilhoy is ahead, in the Renault, on come the brake lights, he hits Wilhoy, he hits Rydell,
08:21he spins, and it's a miracle that he wasn't hit again, with all those cars bearing down on him,
08:26here's a replay again, we're with Radisic, John Cleland ahead of us, hits Rydell, Rydell hits
08:34Harvey, Radisic hits Thompson, and out of the race he goes, and this incident not only put Rydell out
08:41of round 12, but it was a real blow to his title hopes, with Vauxhall and Renault looking ever
08:45stronger at the front of the field, through a misty windscreen, this is Rydell's view of what
08:50had happened, cause of the accident, the throttle jamming open, at possibly the worst point on the
08:56circuit, came up with drama of their own, Nigel Smith won the first race, but was hit by Matt
09:06Neal in race two, Hamish Irvine then challenged a little too hard for the lead held by Richard Kaye,
09:12and Kaye was able to coast to victory, now we're with Wilhoy turning into the hairpin,
09:17that's, oh and he's been hit by Tarquini, Rydell ducking and diving, comes through on the right,
09:23oh and he collides, he hits, he hits Radisic, Harvey goes through, Radisic slows right down,
09:29terribly speaking, accelerate away, and somebody's off, it's Simon Harrison,
09:34and he hits Derek Warwick's Alfa Romeo, went out very wide, I got up behind Sugden, we were going
09:40by, and as we were going by, Harrison just cut in front of me, I clipped him, put him on the grass,
09:46I then went into the corner, and Harrison came back off the grass and hit me again,
09:53there's Gabriele Tarquini amongst that lot in the Alfa Romeo, there he is into the chicanes,
09:58over the kerb and nearly over, and Tarquini lost his car in a big way here last year,
10:04but he's managed to recover, turn into the right-hander, accelerator, and he's hit Radisic
10:10again, so Bailey has been passed by two cars, Cleland is tackling Radisic,
10:17tremendously exciting in the closing stages of this race,
10:21turn into the right-hander, there's contact, there's a collision, they're both off,
10:28wow, what a sorry sight, Rydell was second, Radisic third,
10:32and until this incident, Kelvin Burt had been fourth,
10:39an incident especially lurid when viewed from the bumper camera on the Ford Mondeo,
10:51John Cleland is going for it, he's right up behind, and out spins Rydell,
11:02on go the brake lights from the Volvo, Ricard Rydell's on the right line, out he goes though
11:08now, was there contact, and the first big incident comes at the end of lap one, Tim Harvey goes
11:15straight on at Cyr, collecting the unfortunate Alain Menu, who from fourth position rejoins the
11:20field almost last, but this was the moment that was to cost David Leslie his second place,
11:27into the S's for the last time, and Leslie judged to have made contact with Vauxhall South African
11:32guest driver Mike Briggs, Leslie gets a 10 second penalty, which drops him down to eighth place,
11:39and behind the lead is a really chaotic start, with James K stranded on the line, Richard K
11:44gets out of shape, hits Gravis Mondeo, but somehow they all seem to keep going,
11:51but at the front, Menu is about to make contact with Harvey's Volvo yet again,
11:58and he's off the circuit at exactly the same place as race one,
12:05but the squealing tyres signal big problems for Rydell, and the Swede is out of the race
12:10in the most extraordinary fashion, a high-speed exit in reverse,
12:16and Rydell neatly finds the narrowest gap in the Snetterton perimeter hedge,
12:23that angle shows just how lucky the rescue crew were, with the Volvo missing
12:27the Snetterton ambulance by a whisker, and the most telling viewpoint is Rydell's,
12:33brake failure was to blame, and Rydell is now a high-speed passenger, hoping that he'll miss
12:38everything, and he does, Radicic is deciding that he wants Kelvin Bird's place, he goes
12:46straight past his teammate, but just a little late on the brakes I would say,
12:53out of a hold of all, that's Julian Bailey, and he's lost it, Bailey spins, oh, after he'd tried
13:02so hard, the rest of them go through, there's Johnny Chicotto, and he's going off,
13:08slides backwards, nearly hits the tyre barrier, he's just missed it,
13:13left, right, over the kerbs, now up to 105 miles an hour for the approach to Clarks,
13:18the right hander, over the kerb, over, and he's off, he's off,
13:24listen to him, he's keeping the engine running, fantastic, he's facing the right way,
13:29brilliant recovery, in car with Kelvin Bird, and look at the visibility, that's David Leslie's
13:36Honda ahead, into the left hander, Bird's attacking, oh, and he's, he's hit Leslie,
13:42and yet again the unfortunate David Leslie's been pushed off to the Volvo,
13:47replay, Bird and Leslie, and Bird going for it at exactly the same place where Damon Hill
13:53hit Schumacher in the Grand Prix, and like Schumacher, Leslie goes off.
