00:00DAP Chairman Lim Kwan Eng said non-Muslim parents see nothing wrong with brewery companies
00:08raising funds for Chinese schools, describing the situation as a matter of survival.
00:13In a statement, he said that while parents realize the need to distance their children
00:17from alcohol, a lack of funds would leave Chinese schools in dilapidated conditions,
00:21affecting the learning, health, safety and well-being of students.
00:26Lim said it was this alternative that had seen non-Muslim parents accept sponsorships
00:30by brewery companies over the past 37 years.
00:34He also said non-Muslim parents took umbrage at being lectured about what constitutes healthy
00:38practices in raising their children, adding that there had been no complaints about students
00:42being influenced by breweries to drink or get drunk.
00:46The former finance minister said Tiger and Carlsberg had raised a combined R981 million
00:51ricket for vernacular schools since 1987.
00:54He also cited the 2022 budget, which had set aside 120 million ringgit for Chinese
00:59and Tamil-type schools, saying that the amount was grossly insufficient.
01:03He added that it was ironic that those condemning vernacular schools for allowing brewery companies
01:08to be involved in sponsoring fundraising for them do not press the education ministry to
01:13make up for the difference from such sponsorship by brewery companies.
