00:00Hello, I'm Sam Mawson and here is your daily Sussex News Bulletin on Tuesday July 30th.
00:06People in Sussex and Surrey are being urged to take health precautions with temperatures
00:10expected to exceed 30 degrees Celsius today. A yellow heat health alert has been issued
00:16by the UK government with some areas of Sussex including Crawley, Horsham and Hastings seeing
00:21highs of 31 degrees. The alert is in effect until 9am on Friday. The government says significant
00:29impacts are possible across the health and social care sector due to high temperatures
00:33including observed increases in mortality across the population likely, particularly
00:39in the 65 plus age group or those with health conditions. Impacts may also be seen in the
00:44younger age groups. Chichester District Council was among the councils in Sussex to share
00:49the alert. A spokesperson said, vulnerable people in our communities might struggle with
00:54the heat so please look out for them. Meanwhile, shoppers looking to escape the heat will be
00:58happy to hear of a new ice cream parlour in Chichester. 99 at Furnley opened an historic
01:04Furnley House earlier this month, offering a range of handcrafted ice creams to sunstruck
01:09shoppers throughout Chichester, serving coffee and sweet treats with plenty of outdoor seating
01:14on the property's picturesque lawn. The Grade II listed building, which was built in the
01:1919th century, was once home to fashion retail outlet Jack Wills. When that closed in 2020,
01:25plans were approved to convert the building into high-end office space after the property
01:29was sold to a local investor for more than £1 million.
01:34Finally, a Coast Guard helicopter joined the search for two people in the water at Worthing
01:39Beach in the early hours of this morning. Coast Guard teams, including a helicopter,
01:44assisted the Shoreham RNLI, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service off
01:48the coast of Worthing around 4.30am. A statement on social media by HM Shoreham Coast Guard
01:55said the team was paged along with the Littlehampton Coast Guard to reports of possibly two people
01:59in the water on Worthing Beach at Slashpoint. Teams were quickly deployed along with Sussex
02:05Police and Seacam and located one casualty. Coast Guard officers assisted the casualty
02:10ashore and handed them over to the care of paramedics. The Coast Guard teams quickly
02:15redeployed to search the area for any further casualties along with the Coast Guard rescue
02:19helicopter and Shoreham RNLI. It was established that no further people were in the water or
02:24the surrounding area that required assistance and all assets were stood down.
