00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:29here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at GameTime and
00:34PrizePix.
00:35It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth.
00:38Day 10 of Patriots training camp is behind us.
00:42It was another hot one down there at Gillette.
00:45I think the fourth straight practice now of temperatures in 90 plus degrees, kind of looking
00:50forward to the rain tomorrow it looks like, so maybe a little bit of a cooler day.
00:54But full pads are back on.
00:56The sun was back out.
00:57They had a day off yesterday, back on the practice field today, kind of ramping up the
01:02physicality a little bit with the preseason opener on Thursday.
01:06Just three days away here that we had their first two live tackling sessions of the summer.
01:11We had plenty of run game work, some goal line work, and not too much, I would say,
01:19from the quarterbacks.
01:20Right.
01:21I think it was just like 10, 11 pass attempts for May 13, 14 for Brissett.
01:25So a lot of focus on that run game and some tackling again as we get the preseason right
01:31around the corner here.
01:33But we will start with the quarterbacks.
01:35The limited work they did have, Jacoby Brissett still the top dog as we would expect.
01:41Nothing's changed from there.
01:42And Drake May still working in behind them again, a lighter workload maybe for them.
01:48But what would you think of those two guys today?
01:52Seemed like they were, you know, headed in the positive direction and day off.
01:55How do you think they came back after the day off yesterday?
01:58I felt it was a pretty standard day for both of them for what they've been this camp now.
02:02It's on a deviation.
02:03Jacoby Brissett was solid.
02:06Not much to knock with him.
02:08Drake may little erratic.
02:10He did try throwing the ball down the field a bit more than we've seen.
02:12And he said the other day he wanted to do more of that.
02:15Him and KJ Osborne just missed on a deep connection.
02:18I don't know if it was kind of a little bit on both of them balls, a little overthrown,
02:22but it did still hit KJ Osborne on the fingertips.
02:24So maybe Kenny Holland in, uh, you go back and forth on that, but I thought both quarterbacks
02:29were pretty standard.
02:30If there's any quarterback news today, it's that Joe Milton and Bailey's happy.
02:33We're actually repping within the same periods again, which we hadn't seen for about a week.
02:37Some of that may be either getting them both ready to play on Monday night, but pretty
02:42uneventful day for the quarterbacks in terms of anything new to report.
02:46Yeah.
02:47I thought it was encouraging.
02:48May push the ball a little bit downfield.
02:50That's something he, again, he said he wanted to start doing more and it was such a big
02:54part of his game at North Carolina.
02:56And I think he said the other day, I forget the last time he spoke, all the days are blended
03:03together at this point.
03:04It might've been Thursday or Friday, but he said, you know, he was wanting to take these
03:08shots and the Patriots defense were dropping out into these cover two looks and you don't
03:12want to take shots downfield.
03:13And today it seemed like, you know, he was getting those one-on-one matchups instead
03:16on the outside and that's when he was picking his shots.
03:19So hopefully as you go in the preseason, if the schemes are a little bit more vanilla,
03:24you see some of those shots for may and he gets to show more of that arm strength and
03:29aggressiveness and actual game action.
03:31But I thought maybe his best play was a play.
03:34He didn't even throw the ball.
03:35It was like a slant flat in the, in the low red area and they were both covered and he
03:39was pretty decisive.
03:40He talked to it and ran what had been looked like a live running touchdown to me, even
03:45if he was allowed to get hit and tackled.
03:47So and that's another big part of his game, right?
03:50With his legs and stuff you can do kind of out of structure like that.
03:53So, but not, but not too much with, with the quarterbacks, but yeah, the, the third quarterback
03:59Milton Zappi was interesting that those two guys were both wrapping together.
04:03Zappi had some nice throws and one-on-ones but I think you only threw three or four and
04:08team drills or four passes as it was.
04:11Yeah.
04:12Uh, Milton at some nice throws at times in team drills, but yeah, an overall kind of
04:18quieter day, uh, from the quarterbacks there as they really focused on the ground game.
04:23So we can go right into the ground game, not much room on the ground for the running backs.
04:29I think I wrote run stuff on my paper more than I ever have before.
04:33I had them at eight, eight or Matt, I, we at 98, five, Matt Dolph actually tracked it.
04:39I should give him credit.
04:40Uh, eight, eight to 16 runs are stuffed is what he had today.
04:44Yep.
04:45A lot of run stuff.
04:45And I think it was like seven of the first 11.
04:49I have to do quick, but it was, it was a lot of run stuffs.
04:52It was bad.
04:53And that's something that's kind of been reoccurring here ever since the first day
04:57and padded practice where we were saying, okay, they were open up some encouraging
05:00holes in the run game, and now it's been three, four or five straight practices.
05:04Most of those in pads where there hasn't been much room on the ground here.
05:09That is true.
05:10The one thing I will say to that is there's been getting, uh, they've been
05:17able to get a lot of these run stops because they're going with
05:20very run dominant personnel.
05:21We talked about this the other day, like Jeremiah farms and Mike Purcell on the
05:25field with Devon, God shot, just putting all that size on it's like, yeah, you're
05:29probably going to stop the run if you're doing things like that, but that's not a
05:35personnel you can have on the field.
05:36Like you can't have that on in potential passing situations because
05:39you're not going to have a pass rush.
05:41So I think we're at the point with the defensive front.
05:43It's a new look without Christian Balmore.
05:46They've been trying different things.
05:48We need to see how it's going to look in a game because yes, that
05:51front certainly can stop the run.
05:53But if they're going to play them a significant amount of the time, they're
05:55not going to have a pass rush this year.
05:57Yep.
05:58I mean, you're not expecting again, it's God Shaw it's personal, like you're not
06:03expecting pass rush from those guys.
06:05Like a quality can be a good sub situational pass rusher.
06:08But if you have those three guys on the field all the time, your, your, your
06:13pass rush is going to, you know, take a hit there from the interior.
06:16No, it's a thousand pounds of defensive linemen.
06:19You'd hope they can stop the run.
06:20And then they've been able to do that.
06:22The, the run game again, wasn't very encouraging today, but, um, worry
06:27about the offensive line there.
06:29And we can say again, it was the Darien low back at left tackle.
06:33Um, Calvin Anderson returned to practice.
06:36He took right tackle because Chucks, a core four still isn't playing.
06:39So the interior three looks set it's city.
06:43So it's David Andrews, it's Mike and when new, but we're still playing this
06:46game of roulette with the tackles basically.
06:49And this is the Darien Lowe's fourth straight practice.
06:52I left tackle the right tackle is just musical chairs.
06:55It's Calvin Anderson today.
06:57Caden walls was repping with the backups for, uh, left and right side.
07:00So that had something to do with the poor run game.
07:04I saw the Darien low with at least once or twice in the run game, but where are
07:07you at with, with the offensive line right now?
07:10I mean, worried, I guess I'm just the same background, you know, as I have
07:17been January, so I am, I guess a little optimistic in that hopefully, and maybe
07:24I'm being too optimistic here.
07:26We're going to get to see this thing on Thursday and like real game action.
07:29And that should lead to some sort of context.
07:32Like if they come out and they struggle, like we think they're
07:35going to be, then it's like, okay.
07:37And they don't have troops of core four.
07:39So you include that, but it's like, all right.
07:41Very low.
07:43Couldn't cut it.
07:44You know, Calvin Anderson couldn't cut it.
07:46There you go.
07:46You have it on tape game action.
07:48Let's move on to that next group.
07:50Or maybe they are good.
07:51Maybe they are good.
07:52And they show us, Hey, this is a group worth giving another
07:54shot next week against Philly.
07:55So I'm looking forward to getting some actual information on it.
07:59Um, but actual game action will be nice going forward, but, uh, so who is
08:06your starting five preseason Thursday?
08:08Oh, Thursday night, assuming David Andrews probably won't play.
08:12Yeah.
08:13When you probably won't play.
08:14I mean, he, Michael, when you shout out to him, there's just been
08:16dominant and one-on-ones, uh, shocking.
08:20I know, but he, you know, credit where credit's due.
08:22So who's your starting five?
08:23They're up front Thursday night.
08:26Left to right, like guessing, just me guessing low
08:33lane, Robinson, Nick Leverett, city.
08:36So Calvin Anderson, which I guess won't be close to the group that
08:41realistically probably is the starting line, but so you're moving
08:45city, so back to the right side.
08:47Oh, I got those backwards.
08:48That's my bad.
08:50Right.
08:50Guard.
08:51Okay.
08:52Yeah.
08:52That, I think that makes sense.
08:53I don't know.
08:54That's pretty consistently been the, the second group, right?
08:58Like, am I missing anybody there?
09:01Yeah.
09:01Leverett's been the center Robinson.
09:03I mean, Robinson has played left and right guard group.
09:08I don't know.
09:08Like would they put, cause I, I didn't include Caden walls.
09:11Cause they've clearly made a point of putting with the second unit where
09:13they put lane Robinson with the first and Caden walls with the second.
09:16Maybe it's Michael Jordan.
09:19I mean, Lane Robinson might just play the majority of the game.
09:22Right.
09:23He might play with both of them and he has played left and right
09:28guard at times in practice, but if city, so is out there, he's going to be the
09:31left guard you'd imagine and laid Robinson, right?
09:33And then he, like Lane Robinson will probably be a guy who will stay out
09:37there with the second unit too.
09:38So he could play next to Caden Wallace.
09:40Um, but yeah, Nick Leverett backup center.
09:42We can mention Jake Andrews was placed on IR today.
09:47So his season is done.
09:49So it's really Nick Leverett, Layden Robinson, your top two depth interior guys.
09:55Are you worried we'll see with Cole strange?
09:57Like we know it sounds like he's going to miss some time in the regular season,
10:01but are you worried now about the depth of that interior a little bit more now that
10:05Jake Andrews is out for the rest of the season?
10:08Um, I mean, I I'll be honest.
10:10Like I kind of kept not factoring him cause it was kind of an out of mind thing.
10:14It certainly definitely opens up space for Cole strange.
10:17And that is one less guy.
10:19He's going to have to compete with when he comes back.
10:22Yeah.
10:22They're they're interior depth has been a problem.
10:25That's that's been a problem and that's not changing.
10:27And I'd like to see them bring in a veteran.
10:30People forget Michael Jordan outside of Michael and went to Michael Jordan's
10:34their most experienced interior offensive lineman, or I guess outside of own
10:37window and Andrew's like guards, their most experienced guards, it's Michael
10:40Jordan, and he's probably not going to make the team.
10:42So I'd like to see him add another veteran to the mix there, but even, even
10:45before this, I was a little concerned about their depth there.
10:48Yep.
10:49So, and then Moffy Charles Turner, you know, those guys are centers.
10:53Maybe the Jake Andrews absence helps one of those guys.
10:56We have seen Charles Turner finally repping a little bit more at center and
10:59mafia guard, but, uh, we'll keep an eye on those guys, uh, again,
11:03throughout the preseason.
11:04So, uh, anything else?
11:07Oh, line there.
11:08I think that was most of it pretty much covers it.
11:11Yep.
11:11Just still moving the tackles.
11:13Tough game, tough day in the run game, but, uh, skill position players, anyone
11:18catch your eye out of that group today from, from the skill guys, um, on offense.
11:26Now is it, I will say Juju Smith Schuster probably his best practice at camp, uh,
11:31made a good contested catch over the middle against Sean Wade, but they didn't
11:35throw the ball a ton, so not, not a ton of standouts there.
11:39KJ Osborne got open again.
11:41Drake may sort of missed him, but I think that's pretty much it.
11:45Yeah.
11:46Yeah.
11:46Again, unfortunately not much talk about, uh, offensively.
11:50Like when we get to the defense, there are some guys offensively, not so much.
11:53We can say Taekwon Thornton was back limited fashion.
11:57He participated, I think the only 11 on 11 period, which they only ran 11 today.
12:02There wasn't any seven on seven, but, uh, he participated in the red zone, 11 on
12:0711 period, which was the second one of practice.
12:09He caught the only touchdown.
12:11It was just like a quick slant against Christian Gonzalez.
12:14And then he ended practice, like running off to the side field.
12:16So still kind of limited.
12:19Um, you mentioned KJ Osborne, Juju.
12:24I think that was pretty much it for, for receivers again.
12:26Yeah, not, not much there.
12:28Um, running back.
12:30So Terrell Jennings is fun and he's going to be really fun.
12:34Yeah.
12:34He runs hard.
12:35You've heard me say this enough times, but he runs hard.
12:37Yep.
12:38And you know, you see that little, little wiggle in them too.
12:41So he's going to be fun to watch, uh, in the preseason, Kevin Harris still too.
12:46He's probably repping the head of them still, but you know, he's still, even
12:48though he looks a little quicker, maybe slimmed down a little bit, he, he still
12:52is running hard, he had one, one or two nice runs today where he bounced off a
12:56guy and kept the feet moving and turning forward.
12:58So, um, yeah, I guess if we're, if we're talking about like skill positions,
13:03does that include the fullback?
13:05Yeah, go for it.
13:06We saw a little fullback today.
13:08We saw Keon white and Jeremiah farms, a fullback Keon white college
13:11tight end did drop a pass.
13:13So you hate to see that, but he also blew up Jelani Tavia in the hole.
13:16We saw them try this last year.
13:17It was actually Tavia who played some fullback and red zone in camp and
13:21it never made it into the season.
13:23But if you want to go jumbo on the goal line, you need somebody there.
13:26And maybe, maybe we learned Keon whites, the guy.
13:29Yep.
13:30He got lit up.
13:31That was, it was tough to see what happened, but it looked like he
13:34caught it and just got lit up.
13:36And then the ball bounced in the air and intercepted.
13:39Um, tough to imagine Keon white getting lit up there, but, uh, we'll see how
13:45that, again, we didn't, we saw it in camp last year and then never in the
13:49regular season, so we'll see if that continues Cleveland did, they didn't
13:52have a traditional fullback, they played there like backup center.
13:56I think it was that fullback at times last year out there.
14:00Uh, not a full-time role, uh, but maybe you get one of these positional guys.
14:05I think Taylor Embry to the running back coach said he loves to have a fullback.
14:08So, uh, maybe that's something that etches a role, some kind of niche
14:12role out there, uh, in the offense.
14:15But yeah, I, I think unfortunately, like again, not much to talk about
14:19offensively, but I think that was pretty much all I had.
14:23Did you have anything else, anything else to add?
14:26Really uneventful day for the offense.
14:27I think that's it.
14:29Yeah.
14:29Unfortunate again, but, um, yeah, we'll take a very quick break then we'll
14:35hear from our friends over at game time and then we will get back to defense.
14:39A little bit more to talk about than usual on that side of the ball.
14:43I got to talk to you guys about game time, which is the authorized ticket

16:10All right.
16:11To the defense.
16:12Uh, again, physical day in total with live tackling and they, they
16:16really took advantage of it.
16:17They were swarming the D line, uh, linebackers, tons of run stuffs.
16:22I thought Jawan Bentley was maybe the player of the day who you gave a
16:26shout out to, I think last week, just because we all know and love Jawan
16:30Bentley, but you know, we don't have to get on it, like he's not fighting
16:34for a roster spot, so we don't have to get on here and single them out every
16:37day, but he's at a really good camp.
16:39And he continued that today.
16:40Like at least two runs stuffs, he batted down a pass, the line of
16:44scrimmage, and then, uh, intercepted that pass that went to Keon white on
16:48the goal line that popped up in the air.
16:49So he was awesome.
16:51And the run defense as a whole.
16:53Physical and again, a lot of run stuffs.
16:55They, they were really dominant kind of upfront in that front seven today.
16:59Yeah, they, they, they were awesome.
17:00Like you said, eight of 16 runs stopped, uh, run stuff during practice
17:06and they're working with a bigger group.
17:07They're working with a run stopping group, but this team, like realistically
17:12this team is probably going to be playing from behind a bit and if they
17:15can stop the run, that's going to allow them to come back and game.
17:18So it's a really, really good development.
17:20Yep.
17:21And then even some pass rush Keon white, uh, O'Shane's a menace who we don't
17:27have to look at the media guide now, but a couple of pressures for those guys as
17:31well, Keon white was even talking after practice, he was saying, you know, he's
17:36only working on a secondary moves.
17:37Doesn't want to rely on his primary pass rush and practice, uh, you know,
17:41honing on those secondary moves and he's still getting some pressure.
17:44So arrow keeps pointing up for him as a menace looks good.
17:48I don't think we can talk about Jude on two in a second.
17:51Wasn't very active in elevens today.
17:54I think he was just a couple of snaps.
17:56I don't, you know, he had pads, he was participating, but, uh, maybe not like
18:01a game usage for Matthew Jude on.
18:03So some more opportunities for those other edge guys, but, uh, anyone else
18:07from that group, uh, kind of stand out and then we can touch on a little bit of
18:11what Jude on how to say after practice today, just to go back to, to, to Bentley.
18:14I mean, making plays in the past game too.
18:16Like you said, had the interception.
18:17There was another one where he blitzed up the middle, got a gap and percent
18:21tried to make the right play, like throw behind him into the blitz.
18:23But, but.
18:24Ben leaves his arm up, break the pass up.
18:26I just thought he was, he was excellent today.
18:28He's been having a solid camp.
18:29Like you said, like we talked about that, but he's been, he was really good today.
18:34Yep.
18:35He was very good.
18:36Yeah.
18:37Uh, we did hear from Matthew Jude on first time since, uh, the on-field
18:43incident last Monday, a week ago, uh, where he had that kind of animated
18:47conversation with Gerard Mayo, then he left and then he didn't practice Tuesday.
18:52They were off Wednesday and he came back on Thursday and he's been a full
18:55participant ever since, including three padded practices.
18:59Uh, he kinda took us through that day.
19:02He just said he didn't want to be a distraction on the field.
19:05So he left and then he got a message to come back to talk to Elliot
19:08Wolf and Matt grow, which he did.
19:10And then, and then he went back inside.
19:13He also, you know, said he would play on the current deal again, because he
19:19doesn't want to lose any more money, kind of a last resort thing, but he
19:22still feels like his, uh, market value is higher than the six and a half million.
19:27Uh, then his base salary currently holds right now.
19:30So we've kind of said, you know, the routine coming out the back, not
19:35playing catch with fans, he hasn't seemed like the outgoing Matt Judon as
19:39of late, and he said, you know, that's what he does during padded practices.
19:43He doesn't do that anyway, which I don't remember.
19:45If you remember last year, I thought, well, that first Monday
19:48before he walked out, he did it.
19:49So, yeah, so I don't know, but he hasn't been the outgoing Matthew
19:55Judon and he didn't seem like a very happy Matthew Judon, uh,
19:59answering questions today from us today.
20:03Yeah.
20:03I, so I, I, I wasn't there for it.
20:05I was up doing the chalk talk, but I watched it back.
20:07Um, I still think something's happening.
20:10I know he said, yeah, I gotta be out here.
20:11I don't want to get fined, whatever.
20:12But, and what'd he say when he was asked why he wasn't there Tuesday?
20:16He had a thing or something like that.
20:19He said something going on with me.
20:22Yeah.
20:22Contract negotiations.
20:24Yeah.
20:24I just don't see him playing on a six and a half million dollar contract.
20:28I just don't see it.
20:29And whether it's a trade, whether it's more money, I.
20:33To pay everybody and not him.
20:36It's weird.
20:37Just doesn't.
20:38Yeah.
20:38It wouldn't make a ton of sense to me.
20:39I still think something else is happening there.
20:41And I think he knows maybe even he doesn't know exactly what, but I
20:45think even he knows something else is happening for the fact
20:48that he's been back out there.
20:49Well, did you take his answers today?
20:51Kind of.
20:53And his whole attitude, just that maybe something isn't happening, right?
20:57Like I agree with you that something needs to happen, maybe that
21:00it's not happening fast enough.
21:02Not fast enough.
21:03OK, that's fair.
21:05But yeah, he kept telling us we got to talk to Matt Crowe and Elliott Wolf.
21:10So hopefully we get the chance to do that at some point.
21:14And then I don't know, I was reading through any other
21:18any other of his quotes kind of stand out to you or.
21:22Not really.
21:23It honestly all felt very similar to what he was saying last week.
21:26Yeah.
21:27It's just obviously there's new context now, but.
21:30Yeah, he did say like he knows he doesn't want to like reset the market,
21:35which we weren't expecting them to, but he's like, I was injured all last year.
21:39You know, my market isn't the highest guy, but he doesn't think it's six
21:43and a half million, which it's it's not right.
21:45Like he's been their best player the last three years.
21:47He's been a premier
21:49password specialist, so it's not six and a half million.
21:53But yeah, something something still needs to happen and something still needs
21:56to unfold there with Matthew Judon.
21:59So we'll continue and wait and see there.
22:02But that's kind of the front seven.
22:04Again, Keone White and O'Shane's
22:06the man is still popping in that pass rush without him.
22:08So we'll kind of see what what unfolds there as this contract saga continues.
22:13But to the secondary better day for Christian Gonzalez, would you say?
22:19Yes, it is. Yes, he's much better today.
22:22I don't think he was targeted once on a completion.
22:24He was targeted on an incompletion.
22:26He was step for step with Javon Baker down the field.
22:28No window for Drake made to throw the ball.
22:30I kind of just threw it up, which is what you do to a guy like Javon Baker.
22:32But there's really nowhere to put it.
22:34He did get beat once or twice in one on ones.
22:36I'm not putting a ton of stock into those.
22:37I won't put stock into them if I come in here, you know, in a couple of days
22:41and say, oh, we want a bunch of one on ones.
22:43You can call me on that.
22:43I don't put a ton of stock in a one on ones.
22:45I'm not going to come back here and say that.
22:46But much better in team drills, much, much more, much closer coverage today.
22:52Yeah, I think the only catch he gave up was the touchdown to Taekwon
22:55in the low red area.
22:56But that was like he was playing off coverage and it was just like a quick slant.
22:59Like there wasn't much to really do about that.
23:02But yeah, much more encouraging day for Christian Gonzalez.
23:06I think he even got his hands on some footballs and one on one,
23:08which that's something we haven't seen a lot of a lot from him.
23:11So, yeah, better day for him.
23:14But opposite of him, a lot of Marco Wilson, a lot of Alex Austin.
23:20Alex Austin gave up one or two catches in team drills.
23:24What are you thinking about that kind of third or second boundary
23:29cornerback spot opposite of Gonzalez so far?
23:32It feels open like Alex Austin has not picked up
23:36from where he left off in the spring.
23:37Certainly, I don't think he's been quite at that level.
23:41And it seems like they've they've responded in kind.
23:43And we saw Isaiah Bolden get some run there.
23:46Now he's struggling a little bit.
23:47We saw Isaiah Bolden get some run in that spot.
23:49We saw Marcel's dial get some run in that spot.
23:51But it's been Marco Wilson who's been there the most.
23:53And he's been solid.
23:54So I think he has the advantage there right now.
23:56But I would expect all those guys I just named to play a good amount
24:00in this preseason game and through the preseason to to decide that
24:04because it's close.
24:05Yeah. Yeah. Very close with all those guys.
24:08Austin, I think he gave up one or two to poke today out wide.
24:13Yeah. And dial gave up the one to
24:19Juju, the touchdown to Juju.
24:21Yep. And I think Bolden gave up a catch to.
24:25Juju as well. Yeah.
24:26Kind of one downfield, he gave one up to Juju as well.
24:29So little Mikey Victor, too, even in there
24:32that was, you know, repping against more Zappy and Milton's group.
24:36But he broke up a nice pass on Javon Baker in the end. Yeah.
24:40Still tons of bodies there.
24:42They're all young, like really competitive group, kind of like,
24:45you know, you say Michael Jordan is the most experienced guard
24:48outside of the top guys like that's Marco Wilson
24:51in the cornerback room outside of John.
24:53So he's someone who's got a little bit more run outside.
24:56Maybe that they like that experience and see if he can build off that.
25:01But yeah, the preseason for those guys are going to be big opposite of Gonzalez
25:04because I think Jonathan Jones, he went down to the lower fields
25:09at the end of practice today, too, with a trainer.
25:11So that could be something to monitor going forward. But
25:16Marcus Jones was still non-participant.
25:20We saw him for the first time since he got hurt the other day.
25:23He was in uniform. He was in pads, though. So there's that.
25:26Yeah. So it looked like he might be back here soon.
25:29And he was playing really well in the slot. So.
25:33But yeah, they need one of those guys to kind of emerge here, opposite of Gonzalez
25:37and, you know, Marco Wilson and Alex Austin, we're getting the most of that run.
25:41But one other guy in that room, Sean Wade, out of his red non-contact jersey today.
25:46Very good today.
25:47They broke up one or two passes and kind of had a pretty quiet,
25:52but good, steady camp so far here.
25:54Well, he's been in the red non-contact jersey, which certainly limits what he can do.
25:57He was out of it today. Yeah, he made the most of it.
25:59Had a couple of pass breakups.
26:00And I wrote about this yesterday on 98fathersportsup.com in my mailbag.
26:04If people want to check it out, there's a role for him on this team
26:07that I think he might be the only guy to fill it,
26:10at least as the roster stands right now, because you have all right,
26:13you have Jonathan Jones on one boundary or sorry, you're going to Christian
26:16Gonzalez on one boundary.
26:18Probably Jonathan Jones on the other, just the way campus looks.
26:21So Marcus Jones is in the slot.
26:24Marcus Jones had some injury trouble.
26:26Who's the backup slot corner?
26:28Isaiah Bold has played there a little bit in the spring,
26:30but he's a boundary corner primarily.
26:33Same thing for dial.
26:35Sean Wade's there only like experienced slot corner besides Marcus Jones.
26:39So that maybe maybe they feel like somebody else can can play there
26:44with a lack of experience.
26:45Maybe they find somebody else on the waiver wire to plug in there.
26:47But as of right now, Sean Wade's probably on the roster.
26:51And to see him performing the way he did today and has the last few days,
26:54but especially today without the red jersey is good to see because I.
26:58He may be able to get I think he probably is one of the best 53 players,
27:01but he may be able to get on without being one of the best 53
27:04simply because they need his skill set, the role, you know, his the role he fills.
27:09I don't I mean, I don't know, Brian, maybe I'm missing somebody.
27:12Like the only other experience slot corner they had was Caleb Ford to met.
27:15They cut him.
27:16He wasn't making the roster.
27:19Yeah, Wade may be that guy.
27:23I'm running through.
27:24Yeah, because dials an outside guy, Bolden, you say can do a little bit of both,
27:28but he's like six to two or five.
27:30Yeah, I don't want him living inside as easy.
27:33Hearn is on the bigger side.
27:36Yeah, it's probably Sean Wade.
27:39I'm not seeing anyone else.
27:42I mean, Marco Wilson, he hasn't he has got the move inside,
27:46but he hasn't like he's primarily played along the boundary.
27:49That's what I'm saying.
27:50They have guys who probably could do it if they put him out there.
27:53I want to play.
27:53They haven't done it yet, but right.
27:55They haven't done it in that.
27:57You don't know.
27:58Like it's untested.
27:59So moving a boundary corner, the inside's always kind of tough.
28:03And just let me pull up Marco Wilson snaps here from last year.
28:08Yeah, I played primarily more in the slot.
28:10Yeah, exactly.
28:12I can give you his full career.
28:15For his career.
28:16Yeah, he's played 96 snaps in the slot, just under 2000 on the boundary.
28:21He's actually played more as a box safety.
28:23He has a slot corner according to PFF.
28:25There you go.
28:26So I know Patriots fans are probably rolling their eyes at Sean Wade,
28:31but he was good last summer in the slot and then he made the team
28:36as a slot corner.
28:37And then, unfortunately, every boundary corner got hurt
28:40and they kind of had to move them back outside.
28:42And yeah, he was purposeful last year, I'd say, on the boundary.
28:46So having a guy who can, you know, the versatility and proven experience
28:52and proven kind of production in the slot,
28:55probably a valuable role, especially with Marcus Jones.
28:57Right.
28:58History, you know, he's not the most reliable guy with his size and injury.
29:02So, yeah, maybe Sean Wade carving out another
29:06another year for himself on this roster.
29:08But, uh, safety room, anything UDFA sneaky UDFA?
29:13Yeah, Dell, Dell Pettis kind of making plays.
29:16He's all over the place.
29:18That guy plays with a high motor.
29:19So kind of like Terrell Jennings, we talked about running back.
29:21Like there's so many players in front of him.
29:24It's tough to see how he makes the roster.
29:27But as a practice squad guy who maybe, you know, we come back to next year
29:31if there's injuries, like he's done what you want a UDFA to do.
29:34I'll add this to just over throughout.
29:37Can't really last like week.
29:39Jalen Hawkins and Hunter Henry have had some battles.
29:41I feel like they've been matched up a lot.
29:43And it's been back and forth.
29:45I think Hunter Henry won today, but Hawkins has been right there with him.
29:48And for a team that's been having trouble covering tight ends
29:50the last few years, that's good to know.
29:52Yep.
29:53But yeah, we haven't seen Josh Bledsoe the last few practices.
29:56So opening the door for someone like Dell Pettis to get more run.
30:00And he's got like one or two plays now with the pads on that.
30:04He's coming in and just blowing someone up from the back end.
30:06So kind of an interesting UDFA there to watch him and Terrell Jennings.
30:11Yeah, kind of nailed that.
30:12They're kind of in a similar boat, their offense and defense.
30:15So, um, yeah, Dell Pettis will be watching him.
30:19Maybe a good practice squad candidate throughout the preseason here.
30:22So, yeah.
30:23Uh, anything else on the defense there or.
30:27I think we got everything.
30:29Good day with no live tackling.
30:32We're at the point at this point where I, again,
30:35we mentioned like Sean Wade who kind of had a big delay,
30:37but it kind of is what it is at this point in camp.
30:39We, I'm ready for a game.
30:41Like we, we need to get ready for another opponent.
30:45We're ready to see some live action.
30:46Even the joint practice next week, it'll be better that way.
30:49But, um, we can transition to special teams.
30:53But before we do that, I got to talk to you guys about prize picks.
30:57America's number one daily fantasy sports app
30:59with over 5 million active members.
31:01And it's the easiest and most exciting way to play daily fantasy sports.
31:05Unlike other apps on price picks, it's just you against the numbers
31:08as you just pick more or less on two to six player stat projections
31:12and watch the winnings roll in with price picks.
31:14You could turn $10 into 1000 while watching team USA
31:18rack up the gold medals this summer.
31:20And you can make a prize picks lineup of players across basketball,
31:23soccer, tennis, golf, and any other sport in as little as 60 seconds.
31:27And if you're looking for promotions,
31:29price picks has got you covered every week from lowering select player
31:32stats projections on Tuesdays to help your lineup hit
31:35or getting your entry fees back if you have a losing lineup on Friday.
31:39So download price picks app today and use code C L N S
31:43for our first deposit match up to $100.
31:45That's C L N S on price picks for deposit match up to $100.
31:50Pick more, pick less.
31:52It's that easy over on price picks.
31:56We did that better than Mike did it live.
31:57He had a helicopter take off behind him.
31:59I don't know if you saw that.
32:01But, uh, uh, oh, we got one other thing in defense we can talk about in the chat.
32:07Someone said, talk about Marte Mapu.
32:09Still haven't seen him since the first practice of summer.
32:13So kind of wasn't even out there doing his mental reps today.
32:15I think that's two straight days.
32:17We haven't seen him doing mental reps.
32:18So, uh, kind of disappointing from Mapu, you know, there's.
32:23Potentially a role or two out there that he could seize
32:25and him just not being out there.
32:27Um, it's tough to predict kind of his week one role right here.
32:31I you'd assume he'll be active on special teams, but, uh, on defense, it's
32:36tough to see where he's going to fit in.
32:39Yeah.
32:39I mean, I mean, you said it right.
32:41You can't make the club from the tub and Jalen Hawkins is playing well.
32:44And you wonder what his role is going to be.
32:46Yep.
32:47So, uh, we can wrap up with special teams, no field goals today.
32:51We saw one punts live punt session.
32:55Bryce Berenger was kicking the crap out of it today.
32:59He was rocking that thing.
33:00I was watching them being like those things.
33:03He is booming those things.
33:04Those are some Berenger bombs.
33:05And then I was glad that, you know, I looked at your, your hang times, which
33:09you can share in a second here, and they matched up like the times I was matched
33:13up with the eyes, a couple of five pluses in there, I think, and it looked
33:17like even Polk had trouble field in one of them.
33:19So, uh, he, he was awesome today, but anything else to add with Bryce or.
33:25Again, not much, but we saw a little more kickoff work again.
33:28It, it feels like a feeling out process.
33:30I think that's something that's going to, they need to see it live against
33:33the opponent to really be able to develop it, but, um, no field goals today.
33:37I think that's a big, notable thing.
33:38So Joey Sly had the big day on Saturday and I get, he gets
33:43to ride that high another day.
33:44They did add Tucker Addington, which I wonder, are we going
33:47to see like dueling field goals?
33:49So they're both going at once, um, just to get more kicks in might tell us
33:53that the competition's a little closer than we think it is, but we'll
33:57have to wait and see about that.
33:57They also may just Joe Cardona doesn't need to play in the preseason.
34:01And maybe that's why Tucker
34:02Addington is also like running sprints off to the side.
34:05So I don't know if he, maybe his foot's acting up again or yeah.
34:09Yeah.
34:09Foot injury.
34:11Uh, did you get hurt mid, like Tucker Addington just emerged from the
34:15shed, like halfway through practice.
34:18So you just camping out nearby or something?
34:21No, this is a real thing.
34:22Like the contract has to be signed before he can get out there.
34:24And I wonder if it was something where they literally did the ink was put on
34:27the paper in the middle of practice.
34:29Maybe.
34:29So second lawn snapper in there, uh, that was the corresponding
34:33move to Jake Andrews landed on IR.
34:35So it's still a full roster, but Tucker Addington in Jake Andrews on IR.
34:39So, uh, we'll see if anything unfolds there with two lawn snappers, how
34:43that kind of shakes out in practice.
34:45Assuming Joe Cardona is also not going to play in the preseason,
34:49but one last room of today.
34:51So, uh, that was most of practice.
34:54Um, again, lots of, you know, run heavy stuff.
34:57So not too much to talk about from the skill guys or the
35:00quarterbacks, unfortunately.
35:01But, uh, one more practice before, uh, tomorrow.
35:05And then a walk through Wednesday and preseason game on Thursday.
35:08You know, it's weird.
35:10What's weird.
35:11This is usually the show.
35:12Cause we'll be doing the full crossover tomorrow.
35:15This is usually the show where we'd predict all the rookie numbers.
35:18I keep thinking like I have that fun game anymore.
35:21I'm so used to having, like being ready to like write that thing up
35:25before the first preseason game.
35:26And it's just events on the calendar gone.
35:29It feels weird.
35:30It's going to take some getting used to, I know such a shame.
35:33That's usually, we have our Madden ratings and then we have our Jersey
35:36numbers and that gets us some, some extra content there, but, uh, what
35:42are you expecting tomorrow?
35:44We'll end here.
35:44Any expectations tomorrow?
35:46Do you think they're going to be in pads again?
35:47They have a walk through Wednesday, final tune up for that preseason game.
35:51Again, they're not game planning or anything, but, uh,
35:54I think they're going to be in pads.
35:55I think we're going to see more of an emphasis on the passing game
35:58just cause they were running every day.
35:59Although then again, it's supposed to pour.
36:01So maybe it's just ground and pound all day.
36:04Yep.
36:05So, uh, we'll see.
36:07Hopefully they aired out a little bit more, but so we have some more stuff to
36:11talk about, but, uh, we will see.
36:13And we will also see about our show tomorrow.
36:16Cause if it is raining, that could be tough to do the crossover down at Gillette
36:21live, so we might just be, uh, remote at home, but we are going to do a crossover
36:26with Taylor and Mike, cause it's, you know, another block practice and probably
36:30look ahead to the preseason a little bit there.
36:32So let's do this real quick, actually, before we wrap up, Brian,
36:35cause it is the news of the day.
36:37So as of right now, Brandon, Iuke has been traded.
36:40I just, cause we're going to get podcasters cursed on this.
36:43I know.
36:43As soon as we wrap the episode up, something's going to happen.
36:45So you're saying, well, the Niners tweeted, we've announced the following
36:51roster move and it was like a depth offensive lineman.
36:54So yeah, hell yeah.
36:56Um, I still don't think they're trading.
37:00I still not right now.
37:02Like talk to me, the deadline talk to me next year.
37:04Maybe they tag and trade them.
37:06I still don't think they're trading them.
37:07I'll believe it when I see it.
37:09If they do trade them, I do buy the Steelers noise.
37:12That actually makes sense.
37:13I still think Washington is a factor, his relationship with Jane Daniels.
37:18And I am okay with that.
37:19It would be great if the Patriots could add Brandon Iuke.
37:21I wouldn't overextend to get them.
37:23I think the second rounder and Jude on is the deal.
37:26I kind of look at as being my, if you want to throw in another day, three
37:29pick, find whatever, like I'm not touching the first round pick, even
37:32if it's a pick swap, I'm not doing that.
37:35But this kind of closes the book on this cycle of star receivers being
37:41available from Higgins to, um, who else did we have in this one?
37:46Obviously Iuke, I mean, Calvin Ridley, Calvin Ridley.
37:50Yup.
37:50Yup.
37:50Amari Cooper was sort of in there and I'm okay with it.
37:54The Patriots not striking in this cycle because they are early in the early, early
38:00in the process of building this thing back up the next cycles.
38:04When they should hit DK Metcalf, Terry McLaurin, CD lamb.
38:11That's the group they should be in on those guys.
38:13We're going to start to really talk about those guys, maybe lightly at the
38:16deadline, I think realistically at the end of the season, that is the group
38:20that they should, when they should make the move.
38:23So if I was traded, I'm okay with it.
38:27Now, if he gets traded for like a third and they missed out on that, I'm going to
38:29be pissed, I don't think that's what's going to happen.
38:31So, but like, assuming he goes for what we think is going to go for, I'm okay
38:35that they didn't make this move.
38:36If they may, if that move gets made for our next show, but now I'm
38:41locked in on that next cycle.
38:42You guys know how much I've talked about TK Metcalf also CD lamb.
38:45Cause I'm really starting to get weird there in Dallas, right?
38:48He never got his new contract.
38:50I'm not missing something.
38:51Right.
38:53Did he get paid?
38:54Uh, if he did, I just made myself look like an asshole.
38:58Um, Oh, I swore.
38:59Look at that.
39:00No, he's, he's it he's in the last year of his deal this year, but it would be
39:04probably like a tag and trade or if he hits for agency or whatever, like there's
39:07like, Higgins is going to be a free agent.
39:09I know I said, we're done with Higgins.
39:10He'll be in the next cycle.
39:11Now the next cycle is, is, is when they make their move or when
39:15they should make their move.
39:17Yep.
39:18Yeah.
39:18I mean, I still don't think the Niner should trade Brandon.
39:22Yeah.
39:22We were talking about it this morning, like just trade Debo Samuel
39:25and pay Brandon IU.
39:26That would be, I don't know that anybody will take Debo Samuel.
39:29That's the problem.
39:29Yeah.
39:30But like, yeah, um, there's a lot of smoke around it right now.
39:34So we're probably going to log off so everyone can get the brand
39:37that you trade, that's how it tends to happen.
39:39But yeah, I was, I'm kind of with you.
39:42Like the young guys have been encouraging through camp, 10 practices,
39:46camp, like play them and hit the next cycle.
39:48Iuke was kind of the guy where I was like, okay, like I would overextend, uh,
39:53maybe now and, you know, move that timeline up a year to go get him just
39:57cause he, you know, he is so talented and he could help you right now.
40:00But, um, if it's Jude on in a second, I would probably do that, but we'll.
40:06Probably sounds like Pittsburgh is going to kind of prevail here.
40:09So, uh, yeah, the next cycle that that's when you got to hit.
40:12And I know you love DK Metcalf out.
40:14That would be a really good fit.
40:15So, um, that next cycle is when the Patriots have to strike here.
40:19So we'll, we'll see on IU, we'll keep tabs open.
40:22Um, we'll probably log off again and everyone will get the news.
40:25So, uh, we'll do that.
40:26But, uh, Patriots CLNS on Twitter, you can follow them and we will try to let
40:33you know what our plan is for a show tomorrow again, it's going to be a
40:36crossover, but whether it's, we can do it live at Gillette or if it's raining
40:40too hard, we'll probably have to come home and do it remote.
40:43But, um, in the meantime, you can also follow Alex on Twitter at real Alex
40:47Barth head over 95, the sports hub.com for his Patriots training camp coverage.
40:52And you can follow me on Twitter at I am Brian Heinz and head over to

40:58Thank you everyone for tuning in with us tonight.
41:01And we will see you guys tomorrow after day 11 of Patriots training camp.
