00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third James White field.
00:08Yes, Mina Kimes.
00:09All right.
00:10So first play, we're going to look at second into one of the Patriots first offensive plays.
00:14What's going on?
00:15Everyone?
00:16Mike Catholic, Taylor Kyle's here for CLNS media back with another episode of Pads daily
00:20here on the CLNS media network.
00:22We are powered by prize picks and game time.
00:24We'll talk about them a little bit later, but first Taylor, you dove into the film early
00:29often on this Monday morning, Monday afternoon into the Patriots 15 to 10 loss to the Miami
00:35Dolphins and ugly one again, offense only puts up 10 points while defense lets up 15.
00:40There was penalties all over the place, missed opportunities, especially on the offensive
00:44side of the ball.
00:45And that's what we're going to dive into today in our film breakdown.
00:48Jacoby Brissett goes 18 of 34 completing just 53% of his throws, 160 yards and no touchdowns.
00:55I don't know why I wrote a touchdown, but he did have some relatively clean pockets
00:59I think the offensive line played a little bit better.
01:02I think you would agree with that.
01:03I think the majority of people who watched that game and have analyzed the degree that,
01:07you know, they, they put that five offensive line, that new five offensive lineman out
01:10there and looked pretty solid, but unfortunately the offense just couldn't get the job done.
01:15So we're going to break down some Jacoby Brissett misses and then some overall execution problems
01:21that the Patriots had specifically at the end of the first half.
01:25So before we do so, Taylor, just blame pie, right?
01:29There's, there's a lot of heat on Jacoby Brissett right now, Gerard Mayo this morning, talking
01:33to the media and the Greg Hill show on WEI and fails to name Jacoby Brissett their starter
01:38moving forward this week.
01:39Now the last two weeks in his Monday morning presser, he did say Jacoby Brissett was their
01:44starter.
01:45So there's a little bit of a change there.
01:46It looks like there may be a transition to Drake May coming against Houston.
01:49We don't know.
01:50Next time we'll hear from Gerard Mayo is Wednesday morning.
01:52But in the meantime, don't know who the quarterback is, but blame pie, like I said, the offense's
01:58failed performance, if you will, on Sunday, whose fault was it?
02:03Alex Van Pelt, offensive line, Jacoby Brissett divvy it up as best you can.
02:07What do you think was the reason why they were ultimately only able to score 10 points?
02:12Well, I do want to acknowledge, first of all, this is a team that we knew was going to win
02:16with their defense and their running game.
02:19Maybe their special teams.
02:20I think now we've at least seen that they are a good enough unit and they're well coached
02:23enough that we can't expect them to make some important plays because of that.
02:28I need to acknowledge it.
02:29They weren't perfect either.
02:30Like the special teams, for the most part, they were fine.
02:32I, you know, they did have the delay of game that was unintentional led to a touchback.
02:37And then I know actually they tried to have another delay of game and that wound up in
02:41a touchback where the Dolphins ended up scoring.
02:43They had another one that wasn't intentional.
02:45I believe that also ended in a touchback.
02:47But the defense also like you have Keon White getting penalized twice egregiously on a drive
02:53that ended in a field goal.
02:55You also had the Dolphins only touchdown drive was sparked by the fact that Christian Ellis
02:59on a third and 15 decided to try to get a pass breakup when he didn't need to.
03:03That's a situation where it doesn't matter if they get a completion, make the tackle.
03:08And that obviously would have gotten them off the field.
03:10Instead, the defense stays on the field, they're gassed and they gave up a touchdown.
03:13And then the Patriots, for the first time in the game, actually lost their lead.
03:18And that put the offense in a bad position where we knew this is not a team that can
03:21play from behind.
03:22You don't want to be in that spot.
03:24And then all hell broke loose pretty much.
03:26So I need to acknowledge those things that the defense played its butt off for the most
03:29part.
03:30And I thought really overall, it was a good day from them.
03:32But those critical, critical mistakes put their offense that, you know, you have to
03:37drag along with you in bad situations.
03:40Now that said, Alex Van Pelt, I was really disappointed.
03:44I went into this game and we kept saying it.
03:45I keep reminding people that I said they needed to run 30 times because I thought it meant
03:50that they were controlling the clock and winning time of possession, which they did not.
03:53I thought it would mean that they were maintaining some kind of lead, which they were for most
03:57of the game.
03:58Although the run game was only partially responsible because there were so few opportunities.
04:02And then on top of that, not just Alex Van Pelt in terms of play calling, where it felt
04:06like there were just too many situations, less than I thought after review because of
04:11all the penalties and times they got backed up.
04:13But there were too many times where I felt like they immediately went to the straight
04:16drop back passing game when it felt like the run game was starting to get momentum.
04:20Like there were very few times that they ran on consecutive plays better in the second
04:24half.
04:25Again, I will say, I think they actually started to lean on it more.
04:28And that's really where I thought some of Jacoby Brissette's lapses started to come
04:31up.
04:32And you started to really notice, ah, you know, it feels like they're starting to maybe
04:35figure it out, but Jacoby's not doing well enough.
04:37And then just penalties constantly.
04:39Every time they started, like Jacoby said, it was one foot forward, 20 back because you
04:44start doing things positively, then you get a hold or, you know, whether it's like Brett
04:48or, you know, pre-snap infraction or what have you, you keep putting yourself in these
04:52bad positions.
04:53And Jacoby, to his credit, really did a solid job in those extra long yardage situations
04:58of getting them back in the spot where they could potentially convert and have less aggressive
05:03down and distance situations.
05:05But at the end of the day, he is the quarterback.
05:08He's the one who touches the ball more than anybody else.
05:11He wasn't good enough.
05:12There were way too many missed opportunities on this tape.
05:15I can say Alex Van Pelt wasn't good enough and he wasn't a lot of times, but also you'd
05:19expect your quarterback to capitalize on downfield opportunities, touchdowns, things we've been
05:23saying week in and week out.
05:25And earlier today, I tweeted out that I felt it would be a little scapegoaty to sit Jacoby
05:30Brissette after this specific game, because he didn't put, remember last week I said,
05:35he can't have this turnover filled game again.
05:37Because with Jacoby Brissette, that's like the bare minimum.
05:39You can't turn the ball over.
05:40He did protect the football.
05:41I thought he made plays that he had no business making against constant, I'm sorry, instant
05:46pressure and just really bad situations that the down and distances put them in.
05:50But there were times where he could have gotten them bigger plays or score points and he didn't.
05:55So if he does get benched and it sounds more and more like that could be the case, I'm
06:01not going to be surprised and I won't hate it.
06:03I wish that we could maybe give Drake May a week so he doesn't have to go against Texans
06:07defense.
06:08It's one of the best past defenses in the NFL.
06:10I'd like to see another week of just the team overall playing clean and playing smart and
06:15being coached better.
06:16Not perfect necessarily, but better than what we saw against the Dolphins.
06:20But again, this is never going to be a perfect situation.
06:23I think Drake May needs to play before November.
06:25That's been the bottom line.
06:26I said it after the game, a change is necessary.
06:30And we're going to see why in this film, because they're just reset wasn't good enough
06:33and he continues to not be good enough again in a very difficult situation that is far
06:37from enviable.
06:38Definitely.
06:39And let's break it down before we do.
06:41I just do want to say on top of that, Brissette's been kind of put in like, like we know, an
06:45impossible situation where the offensive line has been in disarray.
06:49The playmakers aren't great and he's just here one season holding the seat for Drake
06:55May.
06:56Right.
06:57And that's, yeah, everybody knows that, but there's still, I mean, he's getting his butt
06:59cracked back there.
07:00So kudos to him.
07:01And there's one play too, specifically that I know is not in the breakdown, but I was
07:04watching it over this morning where he stood in there, got his shit rock for a better term
07:11and delivered a throw right on Keisha on booty's chest and that deep curl on the right side.
07:15It's like, see, that's the kind of stuff where, okay, good for him to still be able to sit
07:19back there.
07:20And yes, is his clock speeding up?
07:22Yes.
07:23Is he missing throws?
07:24Yes.
07:25We're going to get into it all, but he's still putting his best foot out there.
07:26And sometimes he makes a great play where I'm like, man, good on you to stand in there
07:30in front of your teammates and keep getting back up, which he keeps saying.
07:33But like the one, the Hunter Henry, where he was literally getting dragged down.
07:38He had another one to Jalen Polk where that weird shotgun bootleg thing, they keep, for
07:43some reason the guard doesn't get out and it feels like a QB is too far back.
07:46He's again getting brought down, but still manages to complete it.
07:49Great catch and adjustment by Jalen Polk.
07:51But yeah, like there were times you could point to where it's Jacoby had no business
07:55making that play.
07:56Of course, you can argue that Drake may could have done it as well, but it's not like Brissette's
07:59out here giving you absolutely nothing like the dude is battling and you have to give
08:03some level of respect.
08:04But I also understand that fans are frustrated because it's just been a nearly impossible
08:08product to watch.
08:09Impossible to study.
08:10I've been telling you, like I am emotionally, mentally, spiritually exhausted studying this
08:16tape every week.
08:17But you know what?
08:18And let's let the people know what's good.
08:19So let's do it.
08:20Yeah.
08:21We got five plays here.
08:22Five misses from Jacoby Brissette that you mentioned it, Taylor.
08:25He's not getting it done.
08:26Show us why.
08:27We got five of them here for for you guys.
08:28Yeah.
08:29So we're going to run this one.
08:30This was an example of Jacoby Brissette just going short too quickly, which happened a
08:35few times this game when it seemed like he had an opportunity to get downfield, specifically
08:40here.
08:41Other times, you know, there was the one where Romandre Stevenson made somebody miss.
08:44I did think he had a mystery there.
08:46I didn't include it here.
08:48But even that when I was like, you know what?
08:50This is early in the game.
08:51You just want to get the ball out of your hands fast.
08:52I get it.
08:53And then there was another one later where it was a third and two when they ran mesh
08:56and Jacoby immediately, once again, threw it to Romandre Stevenson before anything else
09:00even had a chance to develop.
09:01And there were two defenders that came down to the football and tackled Romandre.
09:05So this, I believe, was the second time that Jacoby just seemed to get to him way too fast.
09:10So this is going to be a split safety look where to the top, we're going to get cover
09:15two and at the bottom, we're going to get quarters technique.
09:18Now also in this breakdown, you've seen the other ones skimmed out a little bit on some
09:21of the graphics just so we can really hone in on things that really matter here.
09:24Because the biggest thing here is that to the bottom of the screen, we do have them
09:28in quarters technique and the Patriots to that side are going to be having Demario Douglas
09:33run an in breaker downfield behind him is going to be Jalen Polk on a post and then
09:38Romandre Stevenson as we saw going to the flat.
09:41Now against this quarters look, this double post or double in breaker type of concept
09:46is exactly what you want because this safety is responsible for taking this in breaking
09:51route.
09:52Right now, Jalen Polk, you're going to see is going to end up breaking inside and no
09:56one's going to be there.
09:57If Jacoby Brissette shows me anticipation, recognizes the play, I think he can get this
10:02to poke for it.
10:03Touchdown.
10:04Now I know there's been times where, you know, earlier this, uh, this season, Jacoby Brissette
10:09told me there was a play that wasn't really a play.
10:11It was dead.
10:12And I was thinking, okay, maybe that's what this is, but I think that poke is running
10:15a live rep.
10:16So let's see how this develops in slow motion.
10:18Now, Jacoby, one, two, three step drop immediately goes to remind Ray Stevenson.
10:24But if he had just given it a tick more time, you have Jalen Polk open in the end zone.
10:29Now of course you do have Mike and when you let up a little bit of pressure inside, but
10:35it's not nearly enough that I think Jacoby was, should have been saying to himself, I
10:38got to get this ball out immediately because he got Jalen Polk coming open.
10:43If you can look at the top of the screen, this safety is also being occupied.
10:47If you put this on a line right in front of the hash towards the hash, I think you're
10:52okay.
10:53But this is a big missed opportunity for Mondra Steven Kitson gets stopped for minimal gain.
10:57And this was followed, um, by actually this was the driver percent did a great job fighting
11:02back, but then the Patriots wound up running on the next play for minimal game.
11:06Then they end up missing a field goal on again, what could have been a touchdown.
11:10Now this is one where Jacoby Berset is just going to miss a really good downfield opportunity
11:15to DeMario Douglas.
11:16Once again, I don't know my screen is doing that, but anyway, all right, so you get the
11:20action.
11:21They fake outside zone, get a favorable look actually.
11:24But for some reason, Jacoby Berset actually throws his receiver into coverage.
11:28So let's break down what we got here.
11:30Now the dolphins are going to show single high, but they're actually going to rotate
11:33who's in the middle of the field.
11:35So this deep safety is going to drop in this safety near the line of scrimmage is actually
11:38going to take that deep middle.
11:40That's going to be a tough rotation because the Patriots, like I said, are running this
11:44naked bootleg.
11:45They're going to actually have Jalen Pope come to set the edge and give, uh, I'm sorry,
11:50Jacoby Berset somewhere to reset.
11:52You got Antonio Gibson faking the outside zone action.
11:56Then here's the biggie.
11:57You're going to have Haitian booty running a deep curl to occupy this deep third defender.
12:02Then you're going to have Hunter Henry coming across the field, attracting some attention
12:06on this side, and you're going to have DeMario Douglas isolated against the safety as he's
12:11dropping on a Dino or a corner post, because again, this guy's trying to drop underneath
12:16from all the way across the field and get deep, really tough position for him to be
12:20in.
12:21Let's see it in slow motion, Jacoby Berset with the fake, and you see the extra fenders
12:25actually duped here.
12:26He buys the run.
12:27And then you get Jalen Pope helping out to pick up the blitzing linebacker.
12:31Now you're going to see the safety is actually telling this corner underneath the Mario Douglas
12:36route because he thinks it's a corner and this is some kind of flood.
12:39But DeMario gives him that nod, breaks back inside, and look where the safety is.
12:43He has to speed turn.
12:45Throw it flat, Jacoby.
12:47Come on.
12:48And if Jacoby puts this flat down the hash somewhere like this, as he's getting ready
12:53to throw right now, to be fair, he does have a couple of defenders in his face.
12:57But still, if you put this flat, it forces the defender and have to stay on top of the
13:01route.
13:02And as I said, he's going to lead DeMario Douglas into coverage downfield.
13:07And then DeMario is going to try to track it.
13:09He's just like, wait a minute.
13:10Where's this ball going?
13:11He turns up field, tries to find it.
13:13Can't make a play on the ball.
13:14You don't want to jump ball.
13:15You're a little guy like that.
13:16So another tough position that was, yeah, I thought that was his worst miss of the day,
13:21Taylor.
13:22Again, where you had the block up, you had it blocked up.
13:25You mentioned and you see, you see that the defense falls for the play action and you
13:29have that nice that, um, you know, that block from Jalen Polk sets him up where, again,
13:34he didn't have a ton of time, but he had enough time to set up and throw.
13:38And this is just a chemistry thing slash a bad throw, right?
13:41Because okay.
13:42Paul, yeah.
13:43Paul, he has time right there to set and throw.
13:46And yes, you obviously it's, it hasn't completely developed yet, but this, uh, once he turns
13:51the safety around.
13:52Throw it.
13:53This is when he really is hit the top of his dream.
13:55He should say, okay, I'm putting this.
13:58Like I'm putting this horizontal.
14:00I'm not trying to put this deep because that's where the safety and that's what pop thinks
14:03he's doing.
14:04And then I don't know if he misses them or if he just doesn't throw it there, but that's
14:07a everything else lined up.
14:09And that was one of the players here where we mentioned that, you know, the offensive
14:12line is, is in tough shape and it's not all Jacobi's fault.
14:15That one just can't have it.
14:17When you finally get everything put together, you have to make it happen.
14:20And he just didn't right there.
14:21Yeah.
14:22And that was a drive that ended in the field goal and that could have been a better opportunity
14:25for them maybe to run into the end zone if they wanted to.
14:27We don't know.
14:29Here was a throw that he missed.
14:31This was another really tough miss on third down.
14:33Now to be fair to Mario Douglas had dropped the slant, the play before this, that would
14:37have put them in the low red zone and they would have been in position to convert.
14:41So this is kind of one of those things where it's not all on the quarterback.
14:44Other people are missing opportunities as well, but as the quarterback in a critical
14:47situation, you need to find the open man and get him the ball.
14:51Now on this play, the dolphins are going to be sending a blitz with man coverage across
14:55the board and this safety in the deep middle.
14:58Now, notice how all these people are pressed up, but you've got Austin Hooper with free
15:02access.
15:03Now, the two best man beaters on this play are going to be Austin Hooper on a curl route.
15:09And then backside, you got Jalen Polk running a slant again, this safety is dropping to
15:14the middle.
15:15So there's space for him to make this throw if he wants it.
15:17But I don't mind the idea of him throwing the Austin Hooper here because once again
15:21off coverage, this is pretty much a gimme and we've talked about it.
15:24He needed to take more of these opportunities when you got the guy uncontested, just get
15:28him the ball in space.
15:30He's going to throw to Austin Hooper.
15:31That's his choice.
15:32Now, it's the top of his drop.
15:36There's some congestion in the pocket.
15:37They have the blitz.
15:38Antonio Gibson still does a solid job picking this up.
15:41He gives a Joby Brissett some room to step up.
15:44And now you see also Austin Hooper is beginning to turn around.
15:47So the plan should be quick hitch, get the ball out of your hands.
15:50I know it's muddy.
15:52You can make this throw.
15:53He does step up and Austin Hooper turn it around.
15:56He's open.
15:57The ball is way too low, hits the turf before it even gets to Austin Hooper.
16:02Another missed opportunity, third and eight.
16:04This wound up being a field goal.
16:06Once again, this was the one where Demario Douglas could have had the catch that got
16:10them in the low red zone, but another missed opportunity.
16:12All right.
16:13And this play, this, it was tough watching this live.
16:19I know we were like, ah, this was such a tight window throw and he's late.
16:24Was it because there's a lot of traffic in the area?
16:25Of course.
16:26But I still don't really love the outcome of this play because I feel like Jacobi Brissett
16:30just hitched at least one too many times before letting this ball go to the sideline on third
16:35and eight in the fourth quarter with the Patriots up just one point.
16:39So the way this coverage is basically going to work out is you're going to see the point
16:43man end up essentially being bracketed.
16:45Then you're going to have this safety covering Jalen Pope from all the way over here.
16:50And then I believe that's a Demario Douglas is going to get coverage from the outside
16:54most defender.
16:55So the Patriots are going to run a route to basically try to get Jalen Polk open by having
17:00Kayshawn booty run a clear out on the corner.
17:03Then Demario Douglas basically just trying to suck up this defender on the curl.
17:06And then you're going to have this out route where ideally he can sneak between some of
17:10the coverage defenders.
17:12So the way it plays out, it is a murky picture.
17:14I have to admit that.
17:15So it's kind of confusing the way that this gets passed off because you're going to see
17:20Demario Douglas sucks up the attention from that outside most defender.
17:24Jalen Polk starts to clear right behind him right now.
17:26We'll see.
17:27Did you Kobe for a sec?
17:28Like right now is when you're like, look, this guy's not even looking at Jalen Polk.
17:33Let the ball out.
17:34You see, he realizes, oh, I think that there's some route underneath me and starts to speed
17:39turn.
17:40But once again, there's time for Jacoby to make this throw.
17:42Put it.
17:43It's just sitting there.
17:44Look at Jacoby in the pocket.
17:45He's not doing anything.
17:46I mean, nothing's not doing anything, but make a decision.
17:49All this time, plenty of space to throw.
17:52This is when he makes the throw.
17:53So I think this is one hitch too many that this is when he should have let it go.
17:57One more hitch.
17:58Now he opens, tries to make the throw, tries to put some sauce on it.
18:03But Jalen Polk just really puts him in a tough position to have to try to make this catch
18:07along the sideline.
18:08And then we would see a similar play later in the game on what we all thought was a touchdown.
18:12It ended up not being because Jalen Polk just couldn't quite get his second foot down.
18:17It's going to run it a couple of times at once, full speed, just so we can remember
18:22if you forgot this unfortunate nightmare.
18:25So, so close.
18:27Just feels like Jacoby was maybe thinking about that Fred Warner interception, wanted
18:31to make sure he put it over the linebacker.
18:33I'm also going to break down why he was kind of in a tough spot because of how the defender
18:37reacted.
18:38But at the same time, you just wish you gave your receiver a more catchable ball.
18:41Could a veteran have caught this?
18:43Maybe.
18:44But again, it's on the quarterback to give him something that's a little more catchable.
18:47So we're going to see the Patriots are going to run what looks like a common concept for
18:51them where they're going to run basically a levels concept with a high low here.
18:55This receiver on a sit route, this receiver basically just clearing out the middle.
18:59And then DeMario Douglas running an underneath route is one of the last options on this play.
19:03What they're actually running is instead of having a seam, this player is going to run
19:07a corner.
19:08It's Keyshawn Booty to keep this safety's attention.
19:11And then Jalen Polk is going to pretend to sit down, but actually go vertical over this
19:16defender.
19:17This was, I think the best play call of the day for Alex Van Pelt.
19:19He knew what he was getting and dialed up something to isolate this middle linebacker.
19:24And then to the top of the screen, you're going to have this safety.
19:26I'm not 100% sure if it's quarters or if they're in some type of cover too, but either way,
19:32this smash concept is going to hold his attention.
19:35So let's let it play out.
19:36Now you can see Jalen Polk looks like he's going to run the sit route.
19:40The middle linebacker respects that, then takes off vertically.
19:43And you're going to see he's going to go into clear space with these two defenders having
19:47their attention on Keyshawn Booty running the corner route set, lets it go.
19:52And this is where it's kind of tricky because it looks like this defender is going to continue
19:56to carry him and maybe turn his back to the ball and try to get his hands up.
20:00But he hesitates.
20:01He, he, he kind of opens up.
20:03Right.
20:04He doesn't turn.
20:05Yeah.
20:06And I think Jacoby was trying to put it so high that if he put his hands up, the guy
20:09wouldn't have a chance to make a play on it.
20:10But either way, there's also a defender coming down about to hit Jacoby as he makes the throw.
20:16So again, not an easy situation for the quarterback, but he puts this high and Jalen Polk in the
20:22back of the end zone.
20:23Maybe a more experienced receiver does a better job keeping his feet down and find some way
20:27to get that toe tap.
20:29Unfortunately, he isn't able to do it and it's an incompletion, wipes away what would
20:33have been potentially a game winning score for the Patriots offense.
20:38Devastating.
20:39A couple, a couple of thoughts, a couple of thoughts before we get into the end of half
20:43stuff there.
20:44One, there, there's 12 yards for Jacoby to get that ball in.
20:47So a little bit better of touch and it's a touchdown.
20:50I think.
20:51And like you said, yeah, he may be being cautious of that, of that middle linebacker as a defender
20:56there because he can get his hands up or he's going to carry him, what have you.
20:59But just again, not, not good enough for an end of gameplay.
21:04Now, I think you're right too, where that, I don't think all the blame is on Jacoby there.
21:08I think Jalen Polk, more experienced, he's only a rookie, get both feet down.
21:13He's not used to it.
21:14He's played in college for the last couple of seasons.
21:15So it's not an excuse, but it's the reality where they still need to get that muscle memory
21:19down and make sure you get both feet in.
21:22And then before that, on that play where Jacoby is just sitting there holding on the ball
21:25on that out route.
21:27We don't have it up, but there, there's a point where the defender that's on Polk and
21:32he's sprinting to the sideline.
21:34You have to throw it now because Polk has to slow up for the sideline.
21:38And so then by the time he's able to throw, he's slowing down and that guy gets under
21:42it where you have to get them in stride and throw it.
21:44And it just, it doesn't happen.
21:45So I don't know if it's, it's an internal clock thing with Jacoby on that specific play.
21:50It's not because he's taking way too long.
21:52Other times it's just, again, it's not good enough.
21:54So it feels like it's both the internal clock at times where I think that he's just going
21:59through his reads so fast.
22:01He's taken some things off the board, but it's also, I think he's afraid to challenge
22:04some tight windows and show that anticipation of, okay, I got to get the ball out because
22:09sometimes it's just a matter of a step where you can just see the defender's leverage.
22:13We're like, if a tight end is sitting in zone where it's like, yeah, it's a tight window,
22:16but you gotta make that throw.
22:18You have to squeeze it in after you hit the back foot.
22:21So like you said, you, you nailed it.
22:22It's a combination.
22:23It's one, I think he's just going too fast, but also it seems like there's hesitation
22:26to throw one of those tight spaces.
22:28Now sometimes he did and showed great anticipation and aggressiveness, like on when he was throwing
22:33downfield to Mario Douglas, like that was a big sign of growth.
22:36I did see from Brissette, but at the same time, that was really more of the exception
22:40than the norm.
22:41Yeah, for sure.
22:42But like we said, it's not all on Jacoby.
22:44There's some execution issues across the board.
22:46We're going to get into that.

25:28That would hurt more than usual, but head over to game time.
25:30Like I said, $20 off your first purchase, take $20 off.
25:33Maybe your first Patriots game.
25:35Maybe it's Drake May's first start against the Texans who knows.
25:37Uh, but if you are going to go and you are a fan of the show, check out game time, use
25:42that code for your first purchase.
25:44All right, Taylor, let's break down a couple more drives before we get out of here.
25:48Uh, two, I don't want to say crucial ones, uh, but we talked about it, uh, on the postgame
25:53show.
25:54We talked about it in the press box.
25:55We were fuming.
25:56Uh, Taylor was apoplectic where it was the end of the half, like a minute 45 left.
26:01And they ended up getting two drives together and it was just execution nightmares all across
26:06the board.
26:07They could have, and probably should have just ran the clock out to halftime, but instead
26:11they make a bevy of mistakes.
26:12Stop the clock, et cetera.
26:13Taylor, let's break it down.
26:15First and foremost.
26:16Uh, again, a minute 46, I believe on the clock, uh, is where this thing starts.
26:20Oh, so I will say really quickly, the big thing for me here is that while the execution
26:25wasn't good enough, I didn't like the fact that this was just like the Seahawks game
26:31where I gave them a pass for being aggressive at the end of halves, but the execution wasn't
26:34good enough.
26:35And we have not seen like they had no momentum, right?
26:38They were going through and out.
26:39They were getting penalized.
26:40They had missed a field goal.
26:41Like I just didn't understand what made them think that they had done well enough to say,
26:45yeah, we're going to be able to push the ball far enough to score points backed up.
26:49Yeah.
26:50That's what I was saying.
26:51Just run the clock out.
26:52Like just at some point someone needs to pee the adult and say, we got to get into the
26:54halftime.
26:55We need to regroup because things are not working.
26:57We are out of sync and you are going to see that in these examples.
27:01Um, so again, as much as I didn't like the execution, I don't think they should have
27:05been put in this situation.
27:06I think they should have run the clock out.
27:07They got very lucky that the defense didn't end up allowing any points here.
27:11So I'm going to run this through really quickly.
27:14This was after an eight yard game from laundry Stevenson.
27:17It is second and two and the Patriots decide to go for a shot play to Jalen Polk that doesn't
27:22get completed.
27:23It looks like there was a miscommunication.
27:24So you can't really see it, but Jalen Polk on the bottom of the screen as the X running
27:29a fade route against man coverage.
27:32Now Jacoby percent hits the top of his drop.
27:35He's going to throw this upfield like he's expecting Jalen Polk to separate and stack
27:40his defender.
27:41But what Jalen Polk is actually going to do, and sorry, the banner kind of high.
27:44Hold on.
27:45I'm trying to take it off here.
27:46Go ahead.
27:47That should be gone.
27:48But what Jalen, Oh goodness gracious.
27:50Love technology.
27:51Okay.
27:52But what Jalen Polk is going to do is pretty much box up with this defender.
27:56Like he's expecting it to be a back shoulder throw instead.
27:59Like I said, Jacoby percent leads him upfield cater code turns around.
28:03I don't want to say almost fixes all because it wasn't super close, but still gets a hand
28:06on the ball.
28:07And there's really no shot that Jalen Polk has at this.
28:10Now this is on the next play.
28:12This is going to be on third and two.
28:14This was literally the poster child for the fact that one after the miscommunication and
28:18Jalen Polk and percent playing different types of routes, you also have a miscommunication
28:22here on this place.
28:23So I'm going to run it through real quick.
28:28I'm sorry.
28:29This is a mistake by me.
28:30I'm sorry.
28:31This was the miss to Austin Hooper.
28:32This is a miss to Austin Hooper, where this was one of the examples of, I thought Jacoby
28:36percent not doing a great job anticipating the spaces in zone coverage.
28:41So this is super basic.
28:42The dolphins are playing cover three blank.
28:44It's kind of a relief when I see defense to just do this normally in the graphics.
28:47I'm like, Oh, I don't have to do all this crazy stuff.
28:49It's very straightforward.
28:50Cover three, right?
28:51And the Patriots are going to be running another vertical route to the bottom with Austin Hooper
28:57run.
28:58It looks like an option route.
28:59Just trying to find the space in zone, which is really the best choice is up here.
29:03You're going to have an out route in a slant.
29:04This is really a better combination against man coverage where, all right, if this defender
29:08is playing you with inside leverage, you're breaking away.
29:10If this defender is playing with outside leverage, you got somebody breaking away.
29:13And then obviously you're going to have Ramond Gray Stevenson in scanning for any blitzers.
29:17And then he's just going to drop as the check down option.
29:20But once again, Austin Hooper, as the guy who's trying to find the space in zone is
29:24really the best option here.
29:26So Jacoby reset is going to take the handoff.
29:29Once he gets to the top of his drop, he can anticipate, okay, this defender's leverage
29:33is a little farther away.
29:35This guy's going to the flat.
29:36I can at the very least throw this low and just give Austin Hooper a ball where he can
29:41kind of dive on it and then be at the sticks.
29:43I think that's pretty reasonable to expect from a veteran quarterback, but he holds onto
29:47the ball, immediately goes backside before he really gives the route a chance.
29:52Then you see the slants walled off because they're in zone coverage.
29:55So I know live, it seemed like he potentially missed a throw to Hunter Henry.
29:59He really missed it to Hooper and then exacerbates it by pretty much running.
30:03I'm tries to get, I'm sorry, the check down to Ramond Gray doesn't like that.
30:06Then runs himself into pressure and throws it away on third down when the Dolphins had
30:12all three of their timeouts.
30:14Not only did I not like the decision to try to score points and go for this when the Dolphins
30:18once again had all of their timeouts, the Patriots ran the ball, then decided to pass
30:22twice and they kept stopping the clock.
30:25So just unexcusable execution, in my opinion.
30:28I don't really know what they were thinking when this happened.
30:31And then it didn't stop there because actually, let me show you really quickly from the end
30:35zone angle.
30:36Yeah, because you can really get an appreciation for the fact that Hooper put it on his numbers
30:40right now.
30:41Right.
30:42Right now.
30:43Yep.
30:44I don't know why he doesn't because the linebacker isn't enough of a threat for you to even think
30:46he can really make a play on this again.
30:49Pressure does get there in the pocket, but I just don't like the decision there from
30:53Jacoby Brissett, one to kind of panic and then to throw it away.
30:57Now this is the final one from the end of the first half.
30:59Now this is going to be a third and five.
31:01They had some bad luck earlier.
31:03The play before this, they tried to throw the DeMario Douglas after there was a miscommunication
31:08where this is the play.
31:09I ended up just getting rid of it because I was trying to highlight the set more than
31:13anything.
31:14But Hunter Henry had to tell Kendrick Bourne to go upfield because Kendrick ran a hitch
31:18when he was supposed to run a go and also in Hunter Henry wound up running right in
31:22his area.
31:23Jacoby Brissett tried to extend the play and throw it to DeMario Douglas.
31:26It got bad at the line of scrimmage.
31:28It set up this third and five.
31:29Once again, the Dolphins have their timeouts.
31:31Just get into the half.
31:33I know you really want a field goal probably, but you're getting the ball at halftime and
31:37you already have a lead.
31:39This felt really greedy for me.
31:41So I'm going to run it through real quick.
31:44So you have Hunter Henry coming to the backfield to help out.
31:46This felt to me, honestly, more like an answer for cover zero than cover one robber, which
31:51this turned out to be.
31:52I'm kind of going to explain why.
31:54So the Dolphins, like I said, cover one robber where you're going to have this safety cheating
31:58down to take the in breaker from Mario Douglas, which Jacoby Brissett should have seen because
32:03they're not really trying to hide it.
32:04And then you have man coverage across the board.
32:07The Patriots are running double slants to the bottom of the screen with a slant flat
32:10combination to the top.
32:12Pretty much all the slants should be on the table.
32:15But if there's one that I would want to eliminate from my progression, it would be the one where
32:18he's running into a safety because obviously even if you throw it to him, he's probably
32:22going to get lit up.
32:23So what Jacoby Brissett is going to end up doing is taking the staff and he does look
32:27to the Mario Douglas first.
32:29It looks like Mario, like I said, is running into traffic and behind him.
32:34You've got Keishon Booty running into space.
32:37Jacoby Brissett comes off to Mario Douglas, doesn't go to Brissett or Booty either.
32:42Then Nick Leverett gives up some pressure on the inside.
32:45And Jacoby Brissett once again, for whatever reason, just take the sack, take the sack,
32:50punt it away.
32:51At least maybe your punter has more room.
32:54Make them burn another timeout too, right?
32:56You take one of their timeouts.
32:57Your punter has more breathing room.
32:58Instead, again, he throws it away and I don't understand why he does this.
33:02I don't know if it was coached.
33:03I don't know if he decided to go rogue, but these are repeat mistakes in a two minute drive
33:07from both the coaching staff and the players.
33:10Just not acceptable.
33:11It's just not.
33:12And again, I don't want to keep harping on this because it kind of, it killed me on the
33:17post game show when I brought out the stats and was talking about how much time they had
33:20and the plays they were running.
33:21It's like, this is not an offense that has the ability to go rogue, if you will.
33:28It's not like Patrick Wilhelms at the end of a half, right?
33:30Where he can just dink and dunk, make stuff happen to Kelsey, make something happen to
33:33Arashi Rice or whatever across the middle.
33:36They're not built this way.
33:37They're not built to score quickly.
33:39They're built to grind you down, move the ball slowly but surely, grind you down, run
33:45the football, throw in the opportunities that they're not.
33:48They're not built for end of half situation like that.
33:51So for them, like you said, it felt greedy.
33:52I think that's a good word to try and get a double score when you're already leading.
33:56Get yourself to halftime, get the football at the beginning of the first, excuse me,
34:01the beginning of the second half, grind them down that way, get your double score there,
34:06if you will.
34:07It's not really a double score, but you're taking the lead, add to your lead.
34:09Instead, two drives in a row, they give the ball back to Miami and risk them scoring.
34:15Luckily, they had the dropped hold on one of the drives and then Miami just ran out
34:21of time on the second one.
34:22But not good enough, poor play calling and then obviously poor execution when it comes
34:25down to it too.
34:26And we used to get on Bill Belichick for being ultra conservative in the last couple of seasons
34:30where the offense just didn't have any momentum and he was like, you know what, I know we
34:34have all of our timeouts, I know we're at our own 30-yard line, I'd rather go into the
34:39half, I'd rather regroup.
34:41And we didn't like it at the time, but also every once in a while, I was like, you know
34:46what, I agree, because I think you are just going to start bleeding more profusely if
34:50in this critical situation, you try to put your foot on the gas pedal when you got no
34:54gas.
34:55And now-
34:56Oh yeah, go ahead.
34:57No, you can set it up, go ahead.
34:58I was going to set it up.
34:59So after the Jalen Polk missed touchdown, we talked about Patriots actually get the
35:02ball back after Miami forces, or they forced Miami to punt, they get the ball back with
35:07about 30 seconds left on their own 43.
35:10And looks like they're just trying to get themselves into range or something, but still
35:13poor execution here.
35:16No timeouts and they don't get it done.
35:17So Taylor, take us through it.
35:18Yeah.
35:19So I'm going to go through these pretty quickly.
35:20Honestly, they're pretty straightforward, but you can see in this clip, so I'm going
35:24to run it.
35:25This was them trying to get into Hail Mary range pretty much.
35:30Jacoby Bursette has hit the top of his drop.
35:32No one is looking at him.
35:35This is a play where I would like for them to try like a middle field screen.
35:39Like where we saw they had the trick play against the Niners where you throw it underneath
35:41and then you have the lateral, like something a little more creative because you know, your
35:45offensive line cannot hang when you have, I know Antonio Gibson was briefly in there
35:51to help out, but you just can't do this when you have five offensive linemen.
35:55And we saw last week with Demontre Jacobs got put in a tough position, wasn't able to
35:59hang against Nick Bosa.
36:01Now you kind of put him in a similar spot where he's got to block somebody.
36:04He doesn't really have the skill to block.
36:06And you're going to see once again, the free rusher, the rusher is there.
36:09He's bearing down on Jacoby Bursette and no one is even looking at the quarterback.
36:13I don't even know, honestly, how many of these refs were alive because when you look at them,
36:17it looks like Jalen Polk thinks there's a screen or something like Jalen Polk at the
36:21top.
36:22It looks like there's a screen.
36:23Demario Douglas.
36:24I don't know really what I think Hunter Henry's maybe trying to get to his landmark, but he's
36:28not looking.
36:29The only one who starts to actually give his eyes is Keyshawn booty.
36:33But by this time, Jacoby Bursette is trying to get out at two sacks.
36:36Just get the ball out of his hand at this point.
36:39And I'm not really even mad at him for trying to make this throw because Hunter Henry wasn't
36:43really an option at this point when he started making it.
36:46And you do have booty.
36:47At least, you know, you're getting past midfield.
36:49I really don't hate, hate this decision because they did need yards and they did manage to
36:54spike it.
36:55You didn't have it in there, but I did point out on Twitter earlier that I love this from
36:59Keyshawn booty.
37:00I don't know if you saw this, but he, he impressed me yesterday for more reasons than one, obviously
37:05the big block on remanders touchdown.
37:07And again, I don't know if it's in the clip here, but as soon as boot, first of all, he
37:10reads this, this coverage gets to the ground and as soon as he gets the ref and he tries
37:15to spot the ball, you run to the ref to spot the ball, which, and then someone responded
37:18to me when I tweeted the clip and was like, isn't this obvious?
37:21Shouldn't everybody know this?
37:22This is like high school football levels of, um, you know, levels of awareness.
37:27It's like, do you remember chase Claypool a couple of years ago?
37:29Yeah.
37:30Catches a first down with 40 seconds, no timeouts.
37:32And he points for a first down and one of his other teammates has to run and grab the
37:35ball to give it to the ref.
37:36So no, it's actually not as easy as you might think for, I mean, it is, but some of these
37:41guys don't do it impressed by case on booty for him to do that in that situation.
37:45And sometimes they'll actually try to spot the ball themselves and everyone tells you
37:49don't do that because you think you know where it's being spotted.
37:52Then the ref has to move it again.
37:53And that time could take two valuable seconds off the clock.
37:56So a great point.
37:57That was great awareness for him.
37:58This end zone angle just cut it off, but that's a really, that's a really great point there.
38:02All right.
38:04This one, I know that they said it was about execution and I think I may know why, but
38:09this is just one where I feel like there weren't a lot of great answers.
38:12Okay.
38:13Cause the Patriots are basically going to try to flood the right side of the field.
38:15So you're going to have all these guys breaking towards the middle and Jalen poke pretty much
38:19just trying to clear out here.
38:21So Jacoby were set, gets out of the pocket.
38:23He's got a good amount of time.
38:25Now I feel like you go or the Mario Douglas is the best angle or the best option here.
38:30You do have this defender coming down and I understand that.
38:34But if you're able to hit him in stride, there's at least a chance that tomorrow is going to
38:37get out of bounds.
38:38Now instead he ends up going to Hunter Henry who to be fair is running into some space.
38:44And I understand it.
38:45Honestly, if it weren't for the situation, this would have been an insane throw from
38:48Jacoby because you're going to see, he puts it right over the defender.
38:53This was almost a pick literally right over the defender, but because Hunter Henry has
38:58to slow down and kind of jump up to shield the ball, there's no chance of him getting
39:04out of bounds at all.
39:06Now these situations are like impossible.
39:09These are very, very tough positions, but anybody in because everybody in their mother
39:12knows you need to get out of bounds here or the clock is going to keep running.
39:16The dolphins play this well and they actually end up having these safeties pretty much trying
39:21their best to cover anything over the middle or anything that breaks near here.
39:26I would, I'm curious to know what exactly Gerard may have thought Jacoby could have
39:29done better, but I'm guessing just the fact that Hunter Henry had to stop his momentum.
39:33He even has the safety coming over the top, good defense by the dolphins.
39:38I want to give him credit, but again, just like no shot here.
39:41This is an end of half situation.
39:43Only opportunity you have to potentially win the game.
39:45And it felt like just those back to back plays where you didn't really have a fair shot.
39:49And then just putting a bow on at the end of half stuff wasn't good enough from a coaching
39:52or execution standpoint.
39:54I was going to say the coaching there to me is to me because you got to get guys going
39:57to the sideline more than just, you know, one, one option with tomorrow, Douglas, or
40:01have it be your de facto Hail Mary play where you flood the right side.
40:05And then instead of having Jalen pull clear out, have him run opposite.
40:08See if you can get him in one-on-one coverage across the top.
40:10And I'm not going to sit here and call out Stan Paul's plays.
40:12I don't even know if they have that in the playbook, but there needed to be something
40:16different there to kind of give them a chance.
40:18But unfortunately they just don't have it.
40:19Oh, cause you had 12 seconds to start the play, right?
40:22So honestly, you're at, so you're at Miami's 36.
40:25That's Hail Mary territory.
40:26I would have tried to throw a couple in there.
40:29Maybe they want to be a closer.
40:30Like I don't really get the idea there, but you're right.
40:32At least send people into the end zone.
40:35You're going to the sideline and maybe it's a little bit closer, but the end goal is the
40:38same.
40:39And if you don't get out of bounds, then you're screwed and you have all these routes running
40:42from the other side of the field.
40:44Maybe they thought that Miami wasn't going to distribute them properly because they weren't
40:47in their vision.
40:48I don't really know what the thinking was, but just not good enough from the coaching
40:50perspective.
40:51And also, as we mentioned a few times, Toby Brissett didn't really do enough to put them
40:55in a winning position either.
40:56Nope.
40:57No, no, no, he didn't.
40:58And I think that's why we sit here today, Monday afternoon, not yet knowing who the
41:01Patriots quarterback is going to be next Sunday against the Houston Texans.
41:04We'll probably hear from Gerard Mayo Wednesday morning with potentially a decision there.
41:09Again, he refused to name a Chico oversight, his starter heading into this week, something
41:13he hasn't done all season in his Monday morning press conference following watching the film.
41:18So some drama there to potentially to watch as the Patriots get ready again to host the
41:24Houston Texans for their week, week, six, week, five, week, six, matchups, or week six
41:31seasons going fast.
41:32We're already in week six.
41:33Yeah, that's it.
41:34Right.
41:35Patriots though, one and four after another loss 15 to 10 to the dolphins.
41:38So that's going to do it for our offensive film breakdown.
41:41Some misses from Jacoby reset, some poor execution at the end of both halves of the Patriots
41:45and overall the offense, just not good enough as they suffer their fourth loss in a row.
41:49We'll be back here on Patriots press pass throughout the entire rest of the week with
41:53more of your Patriots content as they continue to rummage through the rest of this season.
41:59I think that's the best word to use it, but again, four straight losses for the Patriots.
42:03So we'll be back moving forward until next time.
42:07Thanks for watching.
42:08Talk to you soon.
42:09Take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and we will talk to you next time.
42:15Take care.
42:16Bye bye.
