00:00The Fat Controller's engines love being shiny and clean. It makes them feel cheerful as
00:10they puff across the island of Sodor.
00:28Percy often has the dirtiest work to do, but he likes to be clean as well as any other
00:33engine.
00:36So washdowns are important to Percy. But the Fat Controller had bad news. Due to a water
00:44shortage, he said, no engine shall have more than one washdown a day. Usefulness before
00:50cleanliness, he added, and left.
00:53Percy was upset. I get dirty, he complained. I need washdowns. Gordon only does it to feel
01:00important.
01:02I am important, Gordon sniffed. I'm an express engine.
01:07You're a pouty puffer, Percy, teased James. No, I'm not, wished Percy, and he chuffed
01:13away.
01:17Percy was loading trucks at the docks. He was trying extra hard to stay clean, but the
01:23troublesome trucks were being naughty. As Percy pushed them under the coal chute, they
01:28sang out.
01:29On, on, on, they cried. Percy found himself under the chute, and coal dust flew everywhere.
01:37Oh, no, coughed Percy. I'm filthy.
01:42Percy felt awful, but he knew he had to carry on.
01:48On the way to Callan Station, the troublesome trucks teased Percy even more.
01:53Clickety-clack, don't look back. Dirty Percy's on our track. Be quiet, Percy snapped.
02:06When Percy arrived at Callan Station, he was very upset.
02:12From now on, I'm only doing work where I won't get dirty, he said.
02:15Harold the Helicopter was at Callan Station picking up medical supplies.
02:20Hello, Percy, he called, and he took off blowing cinders and ashes everywhere.
02:30Not again, Percy cried. I want a washdown.
02:39Usefulness before cleanliness, reminded his driver.
02:43I want to be useful where I can't get dirty, Percy huffed.
02:48There's a load of sugar going to the chocolate factory, his driver said. We could take the
02:52sugar trucks.
02:53Sugar, said Percy. That's nice and clean.
02:57Percy was pleased.
03:06Percy didn't know that earlier, a leaky truck had spilled oil on the track.
03:18When he approached the chocolate factory, his driver applied the brakes, but Percy's
03:23wheels just skidded on the oily rails.
03:26Oh, no, hooted Percy.
03:32Yuck, he groaned. I've never been this dirty.
03:42He was covered from funnel to firebox in sticky gooey chocolate.
03:49Back at the sheds, everyone thought it was very funny.
03:53You look good enough to eat, Thomas hooted.
03:55Pudding, Percy, teased James.
03:58Chalk ice on wheels, chipped in Henry.
04:01Disgraceful, said Gordon pompously.
04:04Ahem, said a stern sounding voice.
04:07It was the fat controller.
04:08You have had a trying day, Percy, he said.
04:12Yes, sir, replied Percy from beneath the chocolate.
04:15Which have shown us all that usefulness does come before cleanliness.
04:19So, he added, you shall have your wash down.
04:22Oh, sir.
04:23And a new coat of paint.
04:27Percy just beamed.
