Joe Buck reacts to Newcastle United winning the Sela Cup with a 1-0 win over Stade Brestois at St James' Park
Transcript
00:00So, Newcastle United retain the Sala Cup with a 1-0 win over Stad Brest here at St James' Park.
00:07Obviously in the second of two back-to-back games, they beat Girona last night 4-0.
00:11It's a little bit more of a low-key affair than last night's win.
00:15Just a Harvey Barnes goal 15 minutes into the game was enough for the win.
00:19I think it's very clear that Eddie Howe probably picked, I would say, 9 or 10 of his first team,
00:24or the team that's going to start against Southampton last night,
00:26with maybe just Bruno Guimaraes from this team to play, and potentially Trippier right back.
00:32And Fabian Scherz in the half.
00:35They were a tougher test, let's say, than their Spanish opponents last night.
00:40Brest came, they probably dominated most of the game.
00:44They'll be disappointed to not win, although it is just a problem in fitness.
00:47We've always got a caveat that we're in pre-season.
00:49But, yeah, I think Brest were decent.
00:53De Bruyfgaard started the game in goal, which was a surprise.
00:55I think many thought his 10-minute vessel might be up this summer and whether he would actually feature in pre-season.
01:01But he did start in goal and made some good saves in the first half.
01:03He was replaced by Vlaka Dimot in the second half, who again made a couple of decent saves.
01:09But, yeah, it was one of them.
01:10It was all about building fitness and a little bit more low-key, as mentioned, than last night.
01:16Harvey Barnes' goal, to be fair, was Lloyd Kelly played a brilliant ball.
01:20Probably 40 or 50 yards to Harvey Barnes, who then cut in on his right and scored a treatment like Harvey Barnes' goal, firing it in the bottom corner.
01:27It was quite reminiscent of Anthony Gordon's against Man City last season.
01:31Yeah, if you remember that finish in the bottom corner, it was very similar to that.
01:34But, yeah, it was a good finish.
01:36One that, you know, gave Newcastle the lead.
01:38And they never really looked like relinquishing too much.
01:41The keeper never made any saves that you wouldn't expect.
01:43But, you know, it was a good build.
01:46And, anyhow, we'll undoubtedly be impressed with it over the last two days.
01:49You know, the Sella Cup win, we can joke about it.
01:51And people will joke about it.
01:52But, you know, they've beaten, as I said, Stade Brest this year for it.
01:57They beat Villarreal and Fiorentina last year for it.
01:59So, you know, they've beaten European opponents for it.
02:01But, as I said, it's pre-season.
02:02We can't really look too much into it.
02:03In terms of looking towards next week, I think it's obvious that Nick Pope will play in goal.
02:08I think it'll be Lewis Hall, Dan Byrne, Fabian Scheer.
02:12The only, I think, big issue, he's got to decide whether it's Kieran Trippier or Tino Liveromento.
02:15Right back, Trippier played an hour here tonight in his first start of pre-season.
02:21Whether he's fit enough to play a full Premier League game, we don't know.
02:23But, you know, he's given himself every chance.
02:26Tino Liveromento, of course, has been quite regular throughout pre-season.
02:29So, between them two, I think the start.
02:31The midfield will probably be Bruno Guimaraes in midfield.
02:34In the middle of the park with, I think, probably Longstaff and Joe Linton either side.
02:39He played 90 minutes here, very nearly 90 minutes.
02:42He was good.
02:43Whether they want to risk him from the start against Southampton, I'm not sure.
02:46And then up front will likely, probably be Jacob Murphy, Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
02:51The three that started last night.
02:52Harvey Barnes, you know, he scored.
02:54I think he faded a little in the second half as the game went on.
02:58So, whether he's done enough to get a start, I'm not sure.
03:00But, I think that'll be the way it has to go next weekend.
03:02Yeah, I think it was a solid couple of games for Eddie Howard's side.
03:05Of course, we've got to mention that the women also won the Women's Cellar Cup today.
03:09They beat AC Milan on penalties.
03:11Back in the day, Langley spoke after the game and said it was the hardest test they've ever had.
03:15Really, including the Man U game in the FA Cup last year.
03:18But, they battled hard against some tough Serie A opposition.
03:21And, yeah, won on penalties.
03:22A late Amy Andrews goal equalised.
03:25Ogoni Gassan laid back into it and there's three penalties in the one.
03:28That was four faultless efforts with AC Milan missing two, including a save and one hit the bar.
03:34So, yeah, it's good to mention that as they sort of ramp up their preparations for a new season.
03:39And, yeah, two wins for Newcastle United.
03:41Oh, Newcastle United men's and a win for Newcastle United women's team as well.
03:44So, a good solid three games for Newcastle.
03:46And, now all attention's turned towards Southampton next week.
03:50Of course, they'll be looking at the transfer market.
03:52Mark Wahey, that rumor will go away until there's a definitive answer.
03:55And, whoever else, I think there's some glaring holes in the squad that still need replaced.
03:59But, yes, right now Newcastle United's all attention turns towards Southampton next weekend
04:03after their Selecup win over Stade Brest.
