00:00The 9-2-5.
00:04What does a World Series ten years ago have to do with building a team now?
00:10I feel like I typed it.
00:13Okay.
00:14Now I just gave you three examples of dynasties in the Bay where after the dynasty there were
00:22dry spells of about a decade.
00:25I gotta go through it again.
00:26After the A's won three, they went to the playoffs, then they went twice in 12 years.
00:33The San Francisco 49ers, after their last Super Bowl, went to the playoffs just twice
00:38in 12 years.
00:40And now the Giants, after their last World Series, have gone to the postseason twice
00:45in nine years.
00:46This would be the 10th.
00:49And to me, the Warriors are still on the brink.
00:52Here's what I believe.
00:57There's a pattern, and it's this.
01:00You win a title with a core, then what do you do?
01:05You keep the core around too long.
01:11Then you start to lose with your core that had won for you before, but they're older
01:18and they're no longer a championship-type team.
01:22Then what you do is they eventually leave.
01:26But at that point, your quality has diminished because these were the guys who held up their
01:33end of the bargain for 10 years.
01:36And so you're starting from scratch.
01:39And when you start from scratch, there are no guarantees.
01:42Then you get into a cycle where you start to lose, and then, yes, unfortunately, nobody
01:50wants to come because you've started to lose.
01:53And you're no longer a marquee franchise, and the guys who brought you to that level
01:58— Posey, Crawford, Baumgartner, Lincecum, Kane, Sanchez, all the rest — they're gone.
02:04And so there's no longer an allure with the team.
02:08That to me is why — there may be different details — but that's why, after a dynasty,
02:20it can't just be a coincidence that that has now happened to the last three Bay Area teams
02:27that have had a dynasty.
02:28That's all I'm saying.
02:29It can't be a coincidence.
02:31But I would tell you, Stony, life is bigger than where we're at, just in the Bay.
02:35And I'm not mad at those examples, but when you bring in all the other teams, then you
02:42kind of get away from the point you're trying to hammer home.
02:46My whole thing is, nobody is taking a job, no regime is taking over, getting that credit
02:53card of, hey, we had a dynasty with our past regime, we're just going to let you skate,
02:58it doesn't matter, we're not going to hold anybody accountable, we're going to ignore
03:02the misses in the draft and things of that nature.
03:06The Giants have had opportunity, and if you're telling me that you're going to buy Farhan
03:11not being able or being dealt a bad hand, the city of San — the lovely city of San
03:16Francisco missed me with that.
03:19He's been in front, he's — the guys, the free agents have taken meetings, and if there
03:24was a Bob Myers or the Michael Jordan of mouthpieces, maybe those deals are closed and we're talking
03:30about something different.
03:32But I will say this about Luciano, because I can't get over it.
03:36We saw Jordan Bell, and we know the Warriors were winning then, so it was a long shot for
03:41him to pop, but we saw enough of Jordan Bell to say, you know what, and Eric Paschal, you
03:46know what, Stiney, he don't have the goods.
03:49They're not in the league anymore.
03:51I do not feel that way about Luciano.
03:54I have not seen enough of him.
03:56Well, what if they have?
03:58Do you trust they?
04:00That is another question I have.
04:02Because you need to see more of Wiseman to know the kid couldn't play.
04:07But they committed to him, and we saw enough failure or enough where, oh boy, he doesn't
04:12have it.
04:13I don't feel that way with Ramos, I don't feel that way with Matos, and I don't feel
04:17that way with Luciano.
04:18So when you follow up and say, hey, Goo, what if they — I don't trust they, because they
04:23are the reason there's no hey.
04:26And if you're going to tell me there's no hey because of what happened in 14, I'll give
04:30you that, Stiney, but that's just — that's not how it works.
04:33No, I agree.
04:34So fire him.
04:35I really believe — Go ahead and fire him.
04:38And start over.
04:39Yeah, let's see what happens.
04:40Or give somebody else a new vision.
04:42I'm not here to stump — I'm not here to stump for Farhan Zaidi.
04:47I'm here to tell some fans that they are unrealistic year after year after year.
04:52Like, OK, last thing, and I love this, OK, let's just take the two years they did make
04:57the playoffs.
04:58Bocce lost to the Cubs in 16.
05:01You don't think Bruce Bocce managing that giant team the year they won 107 may have
05:07done this, that, or something else, and won that series?
05:10Like, I think about that.
05:12You ran off and said, for whatever reason, wink, wink, Bocce wasn't the guy, Farhan needed
05:17his manager.
05:18I'm just saying, had Bruce Bocce, who since won a World Series, since you guys said, you
05:23know what, I'll see you later, I'm just wondering, had Bocce managed that 107 team against the
05:29Dodgers, maybe, Stani, they win that series, and then we're talking about something else.
05:35I don't think they win 107 with Bocce, because that's not how he managed.
05:39Like, saying Bocce and that team, like, that's not even realistic.
05:45If they would have kept Bocce, they never would have gone down this road that they are
05:49going down with Farhan Zaidi.
05:52They changed direction, okay, let's say Bocce's still the manager, and, I don't know, Farhan
05:59never comes.
06:01I don't know what happens.
06:02What do you think happens?
06:05I wonder if that would mean something to Judge, would that mean something to Harper, you know?
06:11And again, Stani, sometimes when you fail, and I think that's not harsh, when you look
06:18at what Farhan has done and what he has not done, sometimes it's just a new vision, somebody
06:25taking over, and things could get better.
06:28And that's all I'm hoping for, for Giants fans.
06:31Well, guess what?
06:32The Giants' job is harder than most teams.
06:35And that's what happens when you get into a spiral.
06:37They're in a spiral!
06:40But what you just said, because I'm waiting on Willard and FP, I wonder what they would
06:45say to what you just said about the Giants' job is difficult than others.
06:51It is!
06:52Because of?
06:53I just told you!
06:54They can't sign a hitter.
06:57They can't sign a star hitter.
07:00Apparently, and I don't know, other people know more than I do, but apparently the farm
07:06system isn't good enough.
07:09These players.
07:11So there you go.
07:13I mean, should Farhan be fired?
07:19Sure.
07:20Sure.
07:21Yeah, fire him.
07:22If you ain't fighting me on that.
07:23Why would I?
07:24I wouldn't fight you on that.
07:26What I'm fighting you on is, OK, how long are you giving the next guy?
07:31And I'm not saying four years at least, Donnie.
07:33Five?
07:34OK.
07:35I mean, I also think that most fans don't have the stomach for an acknowledged, brutal
07:43stretch for three years.
07:45But I think sometimes when the rat's on the table, you know that you're the last rose.
07:49You know it's going to be hard and there's going to be losses.
07:53But there's a vision.
07:54There's a payoff at the end.
07:55The Giants, because, OK, and I'll be honest here, because of their fan base and because
08:03the paramount thing is getting fans, they won't do that strategy.
08:10Even with that beautiful ballpark.
08:11That's why they won't do it.
08:13Wow, man.
08:15Like the Giants cannot come out and say to their fans, we're ripping it all down.
08:24We're going to try it this way.
08:26By the way, there's no guarantees, but we are going to try it.
08:30But we're telling you guys, we might be looking at three straight 100 loss seasons.
08:35And who can pick up the phone and call what fan and be, maybe you disagree, but you don't
08:41feel lied to.
08:42Well, then you're not going to the game.
08:43You're not going to go to the games.
08:46And that's what they can't stomach.
08:51I guess you can stomach it in Pittsburgh.
08:53How come?
08:54Because they don't draw well anyway.
08:58Listen, I'm not, again, fire fought like 888-957-9570.
09:05We can talk more about it, but like what?
09:09I don't know what the solution is with the Giants.
09:12I don't think they're at a disadvantage, partner, when it comes to free agents.
09:15I really don't.
09:16Okay, continue to say that as every big name walks away from them.
09:22But it's not like the big name is not taking the meeting.
09:26Then keep Farhan because he's one year away from closing a big deal.
09:32Is he?
09:33Well, you're on four or so and through whatever's happening.
09:37I would be, again, I keep going to sales, Glenn Gary, Glenn Ross.
09:42Is it the leads or is it the salesman?
09:45You know what I'm saying, Stouty?
09:46At some point, you really believe, and I'm not saying you're wrong, that ball, the right
09:52person couldn't put a press on a hitter and get him to put on a Giant uniform?
09:58Goo, you just asked me what you thought the problem was.
10:01I said they can't sign a big boy hitter in that park.
10:06You said to me, Stouty, I really don't think that's the problem.
10:11Okay, then there's a big name around the corner.
10:16I think it's a problem.
10:17I think it's been a problem.
10:18But is Farhan the right guy to close that big name?
10:21I don't know that anybody can.
10:22I think we know.
10:23But if you're going to tell me it's the park, then it doesn't matter who's selling it to.
10:28That's right.
10:29See, I do.
10:30That's right.
10:31I do.
10:32So that's why you have to get players who come up through your farm system who are power
10:35hitters.
10:36You get Theo Epstein, all the guys that have had success, them fixing things, the fixer-uppers,
10:43and the Bob Myers, per se, Stouty, guys that have a personality and pizzazz and can sell
10:50your city.
10:51So you think players aren't signing here because of Farhan Zaidi?
10:57It's a combo, because that would be unfair.
11:00And then when I say so, Laird, I know you're like, Goo, he ain't Judge.
11:04Nobody else wanted him.
11:06But man.
11:07I'm looking at Aaron Judge, and I don't think Farhan had anything to do with him not coming.
11:15You know what?
11:16The Giants offered me $400 million, and the Giants offered me $400 million.
11:21But you know what?
11:22I don't like Farhan Zaidi.
11:24And that's why nobody's coming.
11:27It's the ballpark for hitters.
11:29Well, I've seen Soto, who made this park look small.
11:33Judge made it, Juan Soto, he made it look small just this year when they came with the
11:37Yankees.
11:38So did all the prolific power hitters didn't have a problem hitting the ball out of that
11:43park.
11:44You're talking about one series.
11:45A guy comes in here.
11:46Gary's in Daly City.
11:47What's up, Gary?
11:48How you doing, man?
11:49I'm doing great, you guys.
11:50I've been a fan since the 60s of the Giants.
11:51Yeah.
11:52Boren's played the Giants for suckers.
11:53I mean, if they came, say one of the stars came here, like you guys were saying, they
11:54would just pitch around them.
11:55You'd be intentionally walked.
11:56That would always happens.
11:57Why come here?
11:58Where can you make your protection in your lineup?
11:59The Yankees.
12:00The Braves.
12:01Teams like that.
12:02The Dodgers.
12:03You've got protection.
12:04Boren's got protection.
12:05You've got protection.
12:06You've got protection.
12:07You've got protection.
12:08You've got protection.
12:09You've got protection.
12:10You've got protection.
12:11You've got protection.
12:16Boren's played the Giants for fools.
12:18I mean, and their farm system is not developing, guys.
12:21How many strikeouts have they had this year?
12:23You've got Pat the Batboro and all these guys, all these ... No, I mean, come on.
12:28Let's be real.
12:29They're in deep trouble.
12:30I mean, if people get a really analysis, I mean, they've got some pitching and that's
12:34it.
12:35Well, let me-
12:36Now the big stars are coming here.
12:37I've been there since May's.
12:38I'm going to cover you.
12:39Those guys.
12:40Wow.
12:41Who's coming here?
12:42Who's going to come here?
12:43Are they going to be walked intentionally?
12:44They're not coming here to play in this ballpark for this team, and that's being honest.
12:51He can go on, but he's not going to.
12:52I think Gary was the guy who did that.
12:55I can go on, but I don't want to.
12:56But it's the beautiful part of baseball, Stein.
12:57He has a baseball lineup.
12:58Like Evan, if he puts fears in hitters, he helps me.
13:02And if I put fears in hitters, it helps you.
13:04And that helps Spadoni, so it's a trickle-down effect.
13:07But I just cannot, for the life of me, look at the failure or the lack of success trying
13:14to get a bopper in here and not say, or think to myself, maybe it's the guy selling, who's
13:20on record and had to go fix it, is saying, beyond the ballpark, the city.
13:24I believe it's true.
13:25I can keep going if you want, but I'm not.
13:28That sounds like you.
13:30Again, guys don't come here for whatever reasons they have.
13:34I have no idea.
13:36I think part of it's the ballpark.
13:37Do I think part of it's the city?
13:39Yes, I think part of it's the city.
13:41Is part of it that they don't win anymore?
13:43It's probably most of it.
13:46But I believe the ballpark hurts.
13:49I believe that, on balance, a 40-home-run hitter won't come here.
13:56On balance.
13:57So, let's just say you're part of the Johnson family, Matthew Johnson.
14:02This year's over, you don't make it.
14:04What message are you signaling to your fans, and are you letting Farhan go?
14:08It sounds like, Stani, you've built a case to where it's bigger than him.
14:13I think it is bigger than him.
14:15I definitely think it's bigger than Farhan Zaidi.
14:18Now what about the strikeouts by all the hitters?
14:20Is it all the hitters' fault?
14:21Or when you just, you could do this and that.
14:24Maybe it might be Pat Burrell.
14:25Maybe whatever you're doing is not resonating with the hitters, even though they're professional
14:30hitters.
14:31Well, then I would rely on my cynicism and say, do you really think the Giants' problem
14:40is their hitting?
14:41I'm watching guys whiff!
14:43Do you really think if you sub out Pat Burrell for somebody, this thing takes off?
14:50Now takeoff is strong.
14:52I feel you get better results, partner.
14:56Like if I see you going up there with two strong, hey, meet me in the office, what are
15:00we going to do, coach?
15:01Hey, we're just going to watch some film.
15:02Dude, Stani, you keep, do you see what you're doing with your front shoulder?
15:06Like that, I don't know if that's happening, but I'm telling you this.
15:10Melvin is, Melvin's, Stani, he looks like he's lost something, and again, most managers
15:17do when they manage a terrible team.
15:20Boy, now Melvin sounds defeated.
15:23Yeah.
15:24No kidding.
15:25No kidding.
15:26They can't score any runs.
15:29Eh, let's listen to Bob Melvin, see how desperate he sounds.
15:33Hey, Bobby!
15:35Bobby!
15:36How'd Robbie Ray do tonight?
15:39He's had an awful long time off, and you're going to have some tough ones.
15:42I couldn't let him go any more than that.
15:43I couldn't let him throw over 40 pitches with what he's been through, but sometimes there's
15:46going to be some soft spots, and today it was more about his command.
15:49The velo was down a little bit as the inning went along, it picked up some, but.
15:54So if he had a no-no, he was stopping at 40?
15:57No, Bo Mel!
15:58No, but he, I asked, he's talking about the amount of pitches in one inning.
16:04Oh, okay.
16:05That's what he was afraid of.
16:07That he couldn't throw 90 total pitches, but the 40 in one inning is what he said is going
16:15to kill him.
16:16I never want you to feel good, so I'll never give you a compliment, but I will tell you,
16:20I would think about what you said at some juncture tonight, this evening for me, get
16:25a life, about the price of a dynasty, but Stony, I'm sorry, man.
16:30There are standards, there have been drafting, there have been courtship of free agents and
16:37hitters, and I think it's fair to say, or blame, one Farhan Zayedi for where the Giants
16:45are at now, because listening to you, this thing could get worse.
16:49Of course it could, they're .500, of course it could get worse.
16:52Well, what's bad about this year's .500 is you went and spent on it.
16:56You went to Nordstrom's.
16:57Not Nordstrom's Rack, you went to Nordstrom's.
17:00Okay, please don't tell me you're using Nordstrom as the highest end of the highest stores.
17:08Then they went to Nordstrom's Rack.
17:09Well, I guess I'm looking at the receipt, you spent a lot of money, wherever you went.
17:14Nordstrom is judge.
17:15See what I'm saying?
17:16Yeah, but I'm looking at the overall- Nordstrom Rack is Solaire.
17:20I'm looking at the receipt, Stony, you spent a lot, you bought a lot.
17:24Go fire him.
17:25American Express, they want it all.
17:26Go fire him.
17:30I don't think it's going to do much good.
17:32Now that's sobering, if you're right.
17:35I mean, I don't think it'll do much good right away.
17:38The new guy's going to have to come in and implement whatever-
17:42Right, what Farhan had umpteen years to do.
17:45Oh, Father Time and Napa has some Giants trivia.
17:49Oh my God, somebody read in the room.
17:53To preface this, it is just embarrassing in terms of what the Giants have put out in
18:02terms of power, literally in half a century.
18:05I don't understand, for the life of me, how the Dodgers can have such an incredible farm
18:09system.
18:10You know, Giants have money, Dodgers have money.
18:13It really is irritating that we haven't been able to go to a game and feel like, oh man,
18:18we're a three-run homer away from being right back in this.
18:21There's no such thing as that.
18:23When the Giants were kicking ass, it's homegrown, it's Bumgarner, and it's Posey.
18:28And that goes across all sports.
18:32You look at Steph Curry, homegrown, right?
18:34Brock Purdy, homegrown.
18:37You know, you've got to make this happen, there's no excuses.
18:40On that point, I would like it if you knew the last Giants outfielder, homegrown, developed
18:46outfielder, to hit more than 20, I didn't say 50, I said 20 home runs and make an all-star.
18:52I'll give you a hint, almost, almost as long as me, go, give it to me.
18:56Chili Davis.
18:57You know when Chili Davis broke into the Major Leagues, you know when he hit those 20 home
19:03runs?
19:0475.
19:05Chili Davis, Chili Davis hit 20 home runs in 1983.
19:11Oh, wow.
19:13Wow.
19:14Yeah.
19:15Wow, man.
19:16That's a mic drop, Father Tone, appreciate it.
19:19Yeah.
19:21That's a long, that's bigger than Farham, but.
19:23What was it like back then?
19:25Now, see, I didn't like that, you had one.
19:28Oh, look at Spadoni.
19:29Spadoni's like, Spadoni's like, oh, I'll tell you what.
19:32Dude, I didn't like Des Moines.
19:34Spadoni is like the sports writer from the Des Moines Register who finds himself in a
19:40scrum with a, with a coach and somebody, and the coach says something that's so dumb, but
19:46he laughs because he doesn't belong there in the first place, but wants to suck up to
19:50the coach.
19:51Oh, man.
19:52He had that smile on his face.
19:54Spadoni jumped out of that chair.
19:56Whoa.
19:57What year?
19:5883?
19:59Yeah.
20:001983.
20:01I wasn't even in high school yet, baby.
20:02I'll tell you what, 1983.
20:03Now that you asked.
20:05Where were you?
20:06And you made a big mistake.
20:08You know, I was starting my sophomore year at Franklin and Marshall College.
20:11Should have started.
20:13I should have started.
20:16You went with a senior.
20:18I met the criteria.
20:20But I wasn't.
20:21He went.
20:22I can see you.
20:23You probably hated the dude.
20:24Joe Straining.
20:25You probably didn't.
20:26You weren't friends, let me guess.
20:27No, actually, we are friends.
20:28Okay.
20:29All right.
20:30That shocked me.
20:31I can see you holding a grudge.
20:32The worst offensive player I've ever played with in my entire life, but the coach loved
20:34him because he could pick up a guy in the backcourt.
20:3794 feet.
20:39And I could only pick up a guy at the opposite foul line.
20:43I couldn't.
20:44Made the right choice.
20:46Wasn't great at pressuring the ball out front.
20:48Let's go to Jesus in L.A.
20:55Don't mess with the Jesus.
20:57Hey, Zeus, what's up, buddy?
20:59Hey, how's it going, buddy?
21:01I'm a giant fan for many, many years.
21:03I live in the L.A. area.
21:05I watch the games every night on MLB.
21:08I'm disappointed, but I'm very optimistic.
21:11I understand, you know, a lot of shit that's going down with Farhan and the things that
21:15he's doing, but I...
21:17Let's go to...
21:19We got to put the guys on hold for a minute.
21:21That L.A. guy, gotta watch the language.
21:24Watch the language.
21:26But he's an optimist.
21:28You got to be.
21:30That is Jesus.
21:32No haircut for me today, Snotty.
21:34Barber just canceled.
21:37Sounds like you're a real important client.
21:40I'm hurt.
21:42Oh, no.
21:44Evan, you got any clippers, bud?
21:46Oh, man.
21:48Dude, why am I hurt?
21:50Hair looks good, dude.
21:52Let me invite some old-timers into today's show.
21:56You saw my stat.
21:58The A's, the 49ers, and the Giants.
22:05After their dynasties, they had approximately a decade of non-success.
22:12I think the Warriors are right there on that precipice.
22:17I'll ask you, is that just a coincidence, or why do you think that's happened to all
22:23three of our teams in the Bay who've had a dynasty?
22:26Snotty, you're not cooking the books, as I used to always tell you, but it is a coincidence
22:31because you're just keeping it confined to the Bay.
22:35But if we broaden that thing, we would see more teams come back, maybe not with a chip,
22:42have some success.
22:44I think what we would see is that somewhere along the line, something happened.
22:49Like the Spurs get Tim Duncan after David Robinson.
22:54So that could continue.
22:56Let me say this to that.
22:58They got hired based on that being predicated on.
23:05So the standards are still the standards.
23:08And this is beneath the Giant fan standards.
23:11Just listen to the tone.
23:13Go to social media.
23:14Listen to Kruk and Kipe.
23:15Listen to the post-game show.
23:17Listen to Phlegm with Bontae and Shastki-Stiney.
23:20This is not good enough.
