00:00I don't have the answers.
00:03I just have kind of maybe reasons why I don't think they're doing as well as they should
00:07be or doing better than they are.
00:11So I am not, if you want to fire Farhan Zayedi, I totally get it.
00:18What's this, his eighth year or seventh?
00:21He's made one postseason appearance.
00:24So if you want to fire Farhan Zayedi, maybe they will.
00:30And maybe the front office that he's put together just ain't it.
00:36But I think there are problems that are more embedded right now with this organization.
00:42Doesn't mean it's going to last forever, but right now I think they've got a lot of things
00:47working against them.
00:48That's all.
00:49And I don't know what the answer is.
00:53But I do think that the broadest of umbrellas to me is, you don't have a history of signing
01:02free agents here.
01:04You don't.
01:05And there's got to be some reason for that.
01:07But whatever it is, that hasn't been the strategy that this team has used, at least when they
01:13won their three World Series.
01:14And I appreciate that.
01:15So then you've got to do something else.
01:18Let's focus on the farm.
01:19And the way that Luciano, he just comes to mind because he was just shipped down.
01:24The way that all three of these guys have been used, how you needed Ramos by necessity
01:31is the only reason he cracked the lineup and he took advantage of that.
01:34But you just kept jerking their chains for so long.
01:38And under Farhan Stani, I do believe the farm system is no better off than when he came
01:44here and that was what he, you know, he hung his hat on.
01:48He walked around here with his chest out.
01:50I'm the smartest guy in the room.
01:51I'm going to do this or that.
01:53And it's been diddly squat.
01:56And the 10 games over, real quick here, the 10 games over, that's not what I'm holding
02:01the Giants to.
02:02I was holding the Giants to what I've been saying and having fun with Dibs.
02:05Happy birthday to Dibs too.
02:07Is the math is still there?
02:09That's what I was.
02:10And for them to have Atlanta come in with everything right in front of them and not
02:16just lose the tough games, because you say, good, they battled, but not being fundamentally
02:21sound going against everything that you haven't done all year with sacrifice, bunts, bunting,
02:27lets me know Melvin's throwing everything at the wall, hoping something sticks.
02:32But for Farhan, for him to say, we're going to pull the plug, even though we're in it
02:38for the third wild card, buck the system a couple, but about a month ago, talking about
02:43it's on the players and then trade.
02:45So layer who you brought over and he said yes to you.
02:48And then when you traded, so layer, you got up there and you said, you know what, we're
02:53going to get Luciano more bats.
02:56And for him to get basically, and I'm throwing a number out of your study, 70 bats since
03:00then I'm done because now I feel like they don't even know what they're doing.
03:05And that to me is what you could sell me on.
03:10It's time to start over.
03:12And sometimes down to you start over just to start for the sake of doing it, to get
03:16the stench out of trying to just hit your head up against a wall, expecting a different
03:22result.
03:23To me, one of the reasons if you're saying, you know, these young guys, they're jerking
03:27them around.
03:28Okay.
03:29Why are they jerking them around?
03:30See, that's the, I don't know.
03:32I think I, I know one of the reasons and one of the reasons they jerk young guys around,
03:38if that's the term you want to use, is because they haven't, and they can't for whatever
03:45reason commit to playing young players because they're afraid that the Giants fan base won't
03:55show up.
03:56And that is something that drives their organizational philosophy.
04:00You really believe that Brian Sabian, the previous general manager came on with us and
04:07I asked him specifically about this fan base and how important it is.
04:13And he acknowledged that they absolutely consider the fan base when they're making moves.
04:21And maybe it's this, the people atop this organization, maybe they know, they know the
04:29fans can't stomach 270 win seasons in a row just because the players are young.
04:39I think that's part of their philosophy.
04:41Okay.
04:42But why go up to a microphone as the president of baseball ops and say, Hey, Stiney's good.
04:47You're going to get a look at Stiney.
04:49That's a commitment there.
04:51And then if that's why Stiney, I'm not saying you're making excuses, but miss me with that.
04:56With what?
04:57They don't want to commit to the young, but when you tell the world that Evan's about
05:02to get some at bats, cause we traded so layer and he only gets three at bats.
05:06That's like what happened in three at bats.
05:09You're telling the world you're committed to them.
05:11And then you just like, nothing's making sense.
05:16Luciano to me makes total sense.
05:18He really does.
05:19He's not Farhan's guy.
05:20Farhan didn't draft him.
05:22Well, who's this guy then if we want to go down that road?
05:25I don't know.
05:27I don't know.
05:28But like I, this is one of those things I allow for possibilities.
05:34Like for example, I allowed for the possibility that James Wiseman couldn't play and he couldn't
05:40and he still can't.
05:42And even though people clamored for him for two years, the fact is he couldn't play.
05:48But I didn't see enough of him, but Steve Kerr and Bob Myers and Dunleavy did because
05:54they see him every single day.
05:57And I can only assume that Farhan Zayedi looks at Luciano and says, he ain't it.
06:06He ain't it.
06:08But what about the, okay, and I'll get off of Luciano, but what about the position failure
06:12that we all got to see exhibited on the major league level?
06:17How could your scouts that work underneath you Farhan not know this dude was not an infielder
06:25if that's what they deem him not to be?
06:26Like that's, that's negligence in itself.
06:29And I really do believe you're selling, cause we get some fans, Bay Area baseball fans or
06:34giant fans short win.
06:36You know what?
06:37We're going with the young guys.
06:38It's going to be some turbulence, but give me that message and you're still getting the
06:43same results, Stiney, of no playoff, but you have hope and you get to see Stiney grow.
06:48You had hope on Monday.
06:50You had hope on Monday.
06:53And there's a, you know, I, again, this team's 500 and they're still, they're not the white
06:58socks.
06:59They're still hope if you're into looking at the standings and there is a difference
07:03between 61 and 62 and 45 and 75.
07:10Marvin Livermore says I'm wrong.
07:12Get him Marvin.
07:13What's up Marvin?
07:14Hey guys.
07:15Stiney, usually I agree with you, but you throwing stuff against the wall saying it's
07:20the, the, uh, stadium, it's the Texas, um, all you gotta do is compare Cleveland gets
07:26people, Detroit gets people, Yankees and Mets get people, Dodgers and San Diego, all of
07:31them with crime and high taxes.
07:33I think the issue is Farhan because he signed guys to two year contracts with a player option.
07:40And so if they do great, they leave.
07:42If they don't, they stay and you're stuck like that.
07:45That makes zero sense to me to sign a guy two year, two year, give an option out.
07:50It should be a three year with a option after the second.
07:52So if he does great, you got him control for the second season.
07:56I don't think any other team giving two year deals with player option or the second year.
08:02Again, you're, you lose all the leverage.
08:04The guy does bad.
08:05I'm opting in.
08:06If I do great, see ya.
08:07Like how does that make sense?
08:08Good point.
08:09But Stiney, I'll bet you don't need me to back you up, but when you're desperate, you're
08:14desperate.
08:15That's why these guys got all the power.
08:17That's why they got the options.
08:19But uh, yeah, Stiney, I'm just, I'm not saying when you talk about taxes and, and the ballpark,
08:24I just, I don't like, I just need somebody that's going to embrace it and take it as
08:28a challenge and try.
08:29I just don't like, I'm not saying they can't get a free agent because of the city.
08:38I believe there are myriad reasons why they have been unable to land a big hitter in the
08:46free agent market.
08:48I think the park could be one of the several reasons.
08:54I think the city could be one of several reasons.
08:58I think the taxes could be one of several reasons.
09:02I think the fact, and this might be more important than all the others, and I believe it is,
09:07the fact that they are a losing organization is why they can't get players.
09:14I think there are a million reasons why they can't get players.
09:18One of them, Farhan, might not be good at his job.
09:21Yes.
09:22Now that I feel better.
09:23Yes.
09:24That might be one of the reasons.
09:25All right.
09:26Absolutely.
09:27If you got that on the list, I can, I can hear the others.
09:28But the other thing is, yeah, the re, you're right, Gu, the reason they're desperate, they,
09:37they can't land a guy on a five-year contract.
09:43That's why they have to settle for Chapman and Snell.
09:46That's the only way they can get them.
09:49If you want to change that dynamic, fire Farhan.
09:52Go ahead and see what happens.
09:53I'm not saying it won't work.
09:54Now, and I, I kind of answered this, but you mentioned the old regime, Evans and Sabian.
10:00Even though they didn't depend on the free agents, I felt like if they needed one, Stony,
10:06they had the pizazz, the wherewithal to be able to close a deal and sell the city and
10:13the team.
10:14Any free agent they got was probably, at least from a 2009 on, had a lot to do with the fact
10:20that guys wanted to come here to win.
10:25Nobody's coming here right now to win.
10:28They're coming here now to get paid.
10:32Well somehow that cycle's got to change.
10:34You're absolutely right.
10:35I have no idea how.
10:36Eddie's in San Ramon.
10:37What's up, Eddie?
10:38How you doing, man?
10:39Doing all right.
10:40How are you?
10:41Good.
10:42Yeah.
10:43So, you were talking about how nobody wants to come because of the ballpark.
10:44I'm kind of different with you on that one right there.
10:45If you can't hit the ball, you can't hit the ball.
10:46And if you can hit the ball, you can hit it in the gaps right there or whatever, you know,
10:47your bonds will score.
10:48Right?
10:49Yeah.
10:50Yeah.
10:51Yeah.
10:52Yeah.
10:53Yeah.
10:54Yeah.
10:55Yeah.
10:56Yeah.
10:57Yeah.
10:58Yeah.
10:59Yeah.
11:00Yeah.
11:01Yeah.
11:02Yeah.
11:04Right.
11:05Right.
11:06So, as you relate to it being the ballpark, I think it's the talent that's there on the
11:11team that is not able to have everybody have the buy-in that you're looking for at this
11:18point.
11:19Wow.
11:20That's my answer.
11:21That's my point.
11:22Oh, you know what, Eddie?
11:23I'll pick up on that.
11:25I absolutely agree with that.
11:28And I get baseball is not basketball, but you keep switching players out every year,
11:33Oh, man, that, if, there's no, like, I was, look, I totally agree.
11:39When Robbie Ray had that first gaze, Robbie Ray's not bought into this team.
11:44Robbie Ray's bought into trying to win six games in the second half of the season and
11:50convince the league that he's a premium pitcher again.
11:54I'm getting some love and I'm getting hate on this front, Donnie.
11:57I'm not sitting here telling you Luciano is the next Eric Davis.
12:01All I'm saying is, I don't believe, and you might differ, let me know, I saw enough of
12:07James Wiseman and the Warriors might have been wrong and did him no favors, but you
12:11can play or you can't.
12:12They started him when he came.
12:13I saw enough for the hands, oh boy.
12:17I just don't feel that way about Luciano.
12:19That's all.
12:20I'm not telling anybody he's the next, the next thing, but good God, Donnie, let him
12:25go a month or a month and a half batting 112 or we hadn't seen that at all.
12:31And for Farhan to say anybody's name, but Luciano the day Solaire got traded and then
12:37not back, not let that plan play out, should let every giant fan know, nobody knows what
12:44the F they're doing and including Far, now he's just talking, they don't stick to a plan.
12:51I think that's fair partner, just on the Luciano front.
12:55I think, I think it is so easy to say, we'll play Luciano for a month.
13:01Even if he hits one 12, that is so easy to say right now, but as he goes, Oh, for four
13:10and Oh, for three and one for four and Oh, for four and Oh, for four and Oh, for four
13:15and two for four and Oh, for four and Oh, for four and Oh, for four.
13:20At some point you can't do it.
13:22I happen to think he stinks with the bat.
13:26I just don't think he's very good.
13:28He does not look like anything resembling a complete player to me, but what do I know?
13:33Like I just look at the guy and say, well, he's never had his Wiseman moment.
13:37He's never had his come.
13:39Sometimes you don't get a Wiseman moment because you don't deserve a Wiseman moment.
13:42We could have said that thing about the same thing about Ramos until they needed him and
13:46backed into him, taking advantage of it.
13:49Who knows?
13:50Who knows how good he's going to be?
13:52And I'll give you that.
13:53But you got to be excited.
13:55The returns are positive for Ramos, Snotty.
13:57The guy made an all, even if it's based on a first half, he parlayed that chance into
14:02a all-star birth.
14:04You just kind of wish Matos would have got the same luxury you and Luciano against Daddy.
14:11You could be right, but I just feel like you're acting like we've seen this dude bat one 12
14:16for at least three good weeks.
14:17And I think you're underestimating the fact that because of this fan base, I think the
14:24organization feels like it can't go in that direction.
14:28But who are, okay, to that point, who are you really fooling if you're going to be a
14:33slave to that mentality?
14:3561 and 62 is not exactly like that.
14:37They fooled you up until Monday.
14:40Well no, I don't want to be a jerk, but they did.
14:41The math fooled, the math.
14:44So nobody fooled me.
14:45The math was still there.
14:46See, you're talking about this team like it's a different team today than it was Monday.
14:51And it was the same team.
14:52It's the same team.
14:54It's the same players.
14:55This team's around 500.
14:57Could they catch lightning in a bottle in the last six weeks?
14:59It's possible.
15:00But what if I or anybody else out there has gotten turned off by watching them flail or
15:05strike out with runners in scoring position to the point now where it's set in, Snotty,
15:11nothing's going to change.
15:13This is who they are.
15:14Well, I'd say this is who they've been.
15:18Mark's in San Jose.
15:19What's up, Mark?
15:20How you doing, man?
15:21Hey, what's going on, guys?
15:22You guys are killing it as usual.
15:23Oh, thanks, man.
15:25Hey, I just wanted to touch base with you guys.
15:26I'll give you a little bit of background.
15:27I'm a recovering A's fan who has started to take my wife and three kids to the Giants
15:35games this year.
15:37And truthfully, all I'm looking for is good baseball guys.
15:41It doesn't matter who the name on the back of the jersey is, truthfully.
15:46But just to give you a little back story, I was with F.P., trying to get the little
15:50water drop, doing a fantasy baseball camp a few weeks back, and thank you, sat there
15:57with Will the Thrill, awesome, great guy.
16:00But him, F.P., and Marvin Bernard happen to be out there all talking about the same thing
16:05and getting back to basics, man.
16:07I'm tired of watching the Giants business side of the baseball affect the fundamental
16:12side of the baseball.
16:14We got to get back to playing good ball, good, solid baseball, whether that's a sack fly
16:19or a bunt to move a guy over into scoring position.
16:21When you guys are losing one to nothing and can't create small balls, it's tough to win
16:26in this league.
16:27And when you're 61 and 62, those one and two games matter, right?
16:31We're not the Dodgers.
16:32We're not trying to be the Dodgers.
16:33We've obviously showed the entire league full of free agents.
16:36We're not the Dodgers.
16:37So how are we going to do it, guys?
16:39It's got to come from the grassroots, and you're seeing it.
16:42You're seeing it coming with Matos, you're seeing it with...
16:45I want to see Luciano up there.
16:47I think he's going to do well.
16:48You just got to give him a shot.
16:49Now, is he a shortstop?
16:50Doubt it.
16:51But that's OK.
16:52We still want to see it.
16:53Can I ask you a quick question before you hang up?
16:56No, go for it, let's get to Half Moon Bay if you ever get a chance, me and you, let's
17:00go, it's on me.
17:01It's on me?
17:02Oh, boy.
17:03Let me just ask you this.
17:04Will Clark may not even want this job, but do you think Will Clark, a guy like that,
17:10that lives and dies and breathes baseball, could sell the San Francisco Giants as is
17:16better than Farhan is doing in his tenure here with the Giants?
17:21Do you believe that he could do a better job selling the Giants?
17:27I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about talking to Will the Thrill.
17:30That's all I...
17:31Wow.
17:33I'm telling you, he could do it.
17:35Give him five minutes with any player.
17:37He'd have that guy in San Francisco.
17:38The man played a candlestick with Barry, but guys, I put one off of the wall.
17:44OK, I'm right.
17:45I bet right-handed have since I was a little kid switched over to the left side in this
17:49fantasy baseball camp and put one off of the brick wall in right field.
17:54It is not the it is not the park.
17:56It's not the city.
17:57It is the ownership and it is the general manager.
18:01Let's get this correct.
18:02It has nothing to do with the park.
18:04It's the most beautiful park in baseball.
18:06I appreciate it, brother.
18:08Thanks, Mark.
18:09Mark doesn't think it has any...
18:11Mark doesn't think it has anything to do with the park.
18:14And we'll never really know.
18:17But Stiney, it's about Will Clark.
18:19He would sell that.
18:20I'm going to be honest with you.
18:23We've reached the point of the discussion where you're out of ideas.
18:28You're just naming a great player.
18:31No, he's going to join a morning roast tomorrow, Will Clark.
18:34And when you hear him talk giant baseball and a team that he loves, Stiney, that he
18:38works for, that's what I'm... the enthusiasm.
18:42Say Little League.
18:43No, but no, it's a big league.
18:44You need the right people to sell whatever your whatever your thing is.
18:48Patrick Ewing and Rick Barry.
18:51What about them?
18:52How'd Magic Johnson do?
18:53You're out of ideas.
18:55You're out of ideas if you're just mentioning Will Clark.
18:58Why not Matt Williams?
19:01You could throw his name in there.
19:02He's got more experience than Will Clark.
19:06It's energy.
19:07It's enthusiasm.
19:08It's selling the team.
19:09Not selling and taxes.
19:11We got to...
19:12It's not a rah-rah sport.
19:14You play the game as hard as you can and you let the chips fall.
19:19We're talking about management now.
19:21They got poor leadership.
19:23For every Will Clark though, there's one of those for every other franchise.
19:28Like for every Will Clark, there's a Cal Ripken Jr.
19:32There's a Sandy Koufax.
19:33Right, but Evan, what I would say to that...
19:36Who gives a rat's ass about those examples?
19:39We're worried about the toxic giants.
19:41I'm saying, why would they listen to Will Clark over Cal Ripken Jr.?
19:45Like if you're...
19:46Why don't you listen to a legend from another organization?
19:50Like if I put Trevor Hoffman and Will Clark in a room, I'm going to listen to both of
19:53them.
19:54But that doesn't match.
19:55Trevor Hoffman is not part of the giant family.
19:57No, but I'm saying if I'm a free agent and I'm listening to a pitch, you can put Will
20:02Clark in a room and if I'm the Padres, I'm going out and I'm getting Trevor Hoffman.
20:07I get you, Evan.
20:08That's phenomenal.
20:09But I would rather have a guy go in there up against a Trevor Hoffman with that enthusiasm
20:14and that energy and that pizzazz that I think Farhan lacks.
20:18That's all.
20:20Well, do you want him to manage or be the GM?
20:22No, I want him to sell the team and close some deals.
