00:00:00Today, nestled in the Texas plains, the Dallas Cowboys await a familiar foe.
00:00:09Head coach Ray Rhodes has brought a vision back to Philadelphia, unseen in recent years.
00:00:15For this unheralded group, there's a sense of restored confidence that is now brewing
00:00:20in the city of brotherly love.
00:00:24The Eagles draw their strength from not only a dominating defense, but a renewed running
00:00:29game.
00:00:30Last week they manhandled the Detroit Lions, while today an anxious opponent awaits their
00:00:35arrival.
00:00:38Showcasing the league's most star-studded cast, the Dallas Cowboys began this season
00:00:43as expected.
00:00:45But after several setbacks, there were suddenly questions that needed answers.
00:00:53When Dallas came up short twice on fourth and inches, the sight of a divisional title
00:00:57remained cloudy.
00:01:01But America's team did capture their fourth straight NFC East title.
00:01:08Now they set their sights on a much-anticipated post-season journey.
00:01:30A very cold day at Texas Stadium, but a beautiful sunlit day as well, as the Eagles and the
00:01:37Cowboys battle in this playoff game.
00:01:42Pat Summerall here with John Madden.
00:01:43There's something about this match, John, whether you're Eagles or Cowboys, about the
00:01:48finality.
00:01:49It all began back in July, and now one goes home.
00:01:52Yeah, and I think this is the great thing about this weekend, where you have four of
00:01:57these games.
00:01:58I think it's the biggest weekend in the NFL year.
00:02:03It's great because the finality you talk about, we all know that.
00:02:06The winner goes on, the loser goes home, and that's it.
00:02:09But the other thing is, is you can really make it a three-game season.
00:02:13You know that when you get to this position, you can say, if we win our next three games,
00:02:18we are world champions.
00:02:20Nobody expected the Eagles to be here in this championship game, least of all those of us
00:02:25who follow the game.
00:02:26What have they done, and what do they have to do to continue?
00:02:29I think that Ray Rhodes has done an outstanding job.
00:02:31Ray Rhodes and his entire organization and all his coaches and their players, he brought
00:02:36toughness to them.
00:02:37I mean, this is a blue-collar team, and what Ray Rhodes says we have to do is we can't
00:02:41turn the ball over.
00:02:43We have to be physical.
00:02:44We have to be able to run the ball, and I think running the ball doesn't just mean Ricky
00:02:49Waters.
00:02:50I think Charlie Garner is going to have a big part of this.
00:02:52In fact, Ray Rhodes said last night, of the first 12 plays today, Charlie Garner is going
00:02:58to get four of them.
00:02:59What about Dallas?
00:03:01People expected them to be here.
00:03:03Have they surprised you?
00:03:04Well, I mean, they just stumbled a little at the end there, but I still think that Dallas
00:03:09is the best team in football, but they have to go out and play like that.
00:03:12You know, you talk about the triplets.
00:03:14You know about Troy Aikman.
00:03:15He has to throw it to Michael Irvin.
00:03:17Emmitt Smith has to run the ball, and as Emmitt was saying yesterday, though, he said, you
00:03:22know, he said the Cowboys will go as the front five go, and I think that's the thing.
00:03:27I mean, you can talk about that Troy has to throw it.
00:03:29Emmitt has to run it.
00:03:30Michael has to catch it.
00:03:31But I'll tell you, the first thing they have to do is they have to control the line of
00:03:35scrimmage with this offensive line.
00:03:37All right, John.
00:03:38Pam Oliver's down on the field.
00:03:39Let's go down to Pam.
00:03:40Well, Pat, I talked to Cowboys defensive end Charles Haley, who was out of this game because
00:03:45of injury, and he said the main thing that scares him the most is perhaps the Cowboys
00:03:50coming out a little bit too content, especially with the 49ers losing yesterday.
00:03:55He also worries that if Philadelphia jumps on the Cowboys early, they may not be able
00:04:00to recover.
00:04:01Back to you.
00:04:02All right, Pam.
00:04:04Thank you very much.
00:04:05As I said earlier, it's very cold down in the teens early this morning, but it's going
00:04:10to warm up as the day progresses for Philadelphia against Dallas.
00:04:15Graze, and this is my ranch, no matter whose brand is on the front gate.
00:04:23This is my territory.
00:04:25This is my zone.
00:04:27This is my planet.
00:04:34Temperature today, 27 degrees, but with the wind chill, it feels down around zero.
00:04:39Wind north, 10 to 15 miles an hour, it's supposed to warm up as the day goes on.
00:04:45Chris Ponyo, the kickoff for Dallas.
00:04:47The Eagles won the toss.
00:04:48Charlie Garner back deep.
00:04:51Garner.
00:04:52At the 12, lost it.
00:04:54Ball's loose.
00:05:00Garner got it back.
00:05:03Here's the Eagle offense.
00:05:05Rodney Pete opens at quarterback.
00:05:08Nine and three, his record as a starter.
00:05:11Last week against Detroit, he was outstanding.
00:05:14In front of him, Brooks McIntyre, McKenzie, Bogues-Wine, and Antone Davis.
00:05:20Ricky Waters and Charlie Garner, the two runners, Fred Barnett and Calvin Williams.
00:05:24Wine and Ed West is the tight end.
00:05:27Tight end left.
00:05:28In fact, they go with two tight ends.
00:05:38No game.
00:05:39Russell Maryland opens that left defensive tackle.
00:05:44That was Robert Jones who made the stop.
00:05:48Let's check out those Dallas linebackers.
00:05:51Darren Smith, Robert Jones, and Dixon Edwards.
00:05:54Godfrey Miles had been in the middle.
00:05:56Jones is back.
00:05:57Brown, Brock Marion, Drew, Darren Woodson, and Deion Sanders in the secondary.
00:06:03Brown goes to left cornerback.
00:06:05Deion Sanders to the right.
00:06:07James Saxon and Charlie Garner, the two backs.
00:06:11This is Garner.
00:06:14Garner, wide right, got about three.
00:06:17Tony Tolbert.
00:06:19Well, the Eagles are one of those teams that script their first 15 plays.
00:06:23Like we just said, Ray Rhodes told us last night that he wanted Charlie Garner to carry four of the first 12 plays
00:06:31because he thinks if he has a breakaway player, his best breakaway player on offense is Charlie Garner.
00:06:38The Eagles go with three wide receivers.
00:06:41Rob Carpenter joins the other two, two of them to the left.
00:06:52Rodney Peete back to throw and fire.
00:06:55Complete with Calvin Williams.
00:06:57He's hit down hard.
00:07:01Now, there is a tackle.
00:07:04Darren Smith.
00:07:06Darren Smith comes up and makes that play pattern.
00:07:08Darren Smith comes up and makes that play pattern.
00:07:10If he doesn't make this, this is a first down.
00:07:13Because Rodney Peete throws it a little short of the first down.
00:07:16The ball has got there.
00:07:17Now, watch Darren Smith come up right here.
00:07:19Boom.
00:07:21And that is the end of the forward progress of Calvin Williams.
00:07:25Quick reverse.
00:07:26Deion Sanders back deep by himself.
00:07:29Hutting the putter.
00:07:31Short kick.
00:07:32Sanders going to let it bounce.
00:07:35And out of bounds.
00:07:39At about the 38-yard line, 37 make it.
00:07:43Dallas takes over.
00:07:44Here comes their offensive unit.
00:07:47Led by Troy Aikman.
00:07:50Number 8.
00:07:527 and 1 in postseason as a starter.
00:07:57In front of him, that offensive line that John Madden was talking about.
00:08:012 and 8, Newton, Derrick Kennard, Allen, and Williams.
00:08:04Emmett Smith, Daryl Johnston, Kevin Williams, and Michael Irvin.
00:08:07The wide receivers.
00:08:08And Jay Novacek back at tight end just 2 weeks after knee surgery.
00:08:13Aikman.
00:08:15Leads the offense.
00:08:20And he is back to throw it.
00:08:24Caught Kevin Williams midfield.
00:08:31He has to be a factor for them to be able to move it.
00:08:3513-yard pickup first down.
00:08:37Eagle defensive line.
00:08:38Mamoula, Dixon, Andy Harmon, and William Fuller, their leader.
00:08:43Thomas, Govea, and Romanowski.
00:08:47And in the secondary, Bobby Taylor, who will shadow Irvin.
00:08:50Jackson, Zordich, and Mark McMillan.
00:08:541st and 10, Dallas in Eagle territory at their 49.
00:09:00Aikman will throw again.
00:09:03Complete Novacek.
00:09:06How about 8?
00:09:09There's an amazing story, isn't it, Pat?
00:09:11Jay Novacek, just 2 weeks ago, he has knee surgery.
00:09:15They get the, they have the bye week.
00:09:17He comes back.
00:09:18He practices this week.
00:09:19I was out there at practice the other day watching him.
00:09:21And he was, he was running, I think, better than he was before he had the knee surgery.
00:09:26The amazing thing to me when we were at practice was, it was cold.
00:09:29I mean, really cold.
00:09:31Everybody else is all bundled up, and he's in shorts.
00:09:35Well, the type of guy that wears shorts in that kind of weather is the type of guy that comes back in 2 weeks.
00:09:40Emmett Smith, first carry, gets only a yard.
00:09:45And that's where they have to control.
00:09:46We're talking about the offensive line, and most of the runs of Emmett Smith are in the inside.
00:09:53So you have to control this part.
00:09:55Boom, boom, boom, right here, if you're going to get any running.
00:09:59The white jerseys have to knock the green jerseys back, and they didn't do it.
00:10:03Didn't do it.
00:10:04You see, they got penetration in the middle.
00:10:05That's the thing that killed the Cowboys the last time in their running game,
00:10:09especially in the second half of the game.
00:10:12Ron Stone comes in and lines up.
00:10:19That's Darryl Johnston, and he won't get it.
00:10:24That's the same thing that happened again in the second half of that Eagle game.
00:10:28That short yardage, again, they didn't do it to Emmett Smith.
00:10:31They tried to foul him up, but you've got to control right here.
00:10:34You have to control this line of scrimmage right here.
00:10:37Again, they get penetration.
00:10:38They're going to try and bring Darryl Johnston in as a changeup,
00:10:42but again, they get the penetration.
00:10:44They don't get any trap, and they don't get half the Eagles blocked.
00:10:48They don't push anybody back.
00:10:50John Chet, back deep to punt for Dallas.
00:10:54Rob Carpenter, back for the Eagles.
00:10:58Jet's kick is a good one.
00:10:59Carpenter sends a spare catch down at about the 14.
00:11:04That punt was not as good as it looked when it took off.
00:11:09Only 26 yards.
00:11:12Nothing, nothing in this divisional playoff.
00:11:14The Eagles and the Cowboys.
00:11:17Back at Texas Stadium, nothing, nothing in the divisional playoff game.
00:11:21The Eagles ball at their own 15.
00:11:29Rodney Peet back to throw.
00:11:32Game complete.
00:11:34Intended for Reggie Johnson.
00:11:39I think even though the Eagles have poor field position here,
00:11:42the thing that Ray Rhodes always talks about with Rodney Peet
00:11:46is just manage the game.
00:11:48Don't have any turnovers,
00:11:50and the thing that he worries most about Rodney Peet
00:11:53is Rodney Peet getting frustrated and forcing the ball.
00:11:56He said that's the thing that he can't do.
00:11:58And when you get down in this area,
00:12:00you sure as heck better not force it.
00:12:02Waters and Saxon.
00:12:05The two backs.
00:12:07Cowboys show bliss.
00:12:09Handoff is to Ricky Waters,
00:12:11and Brock Marion comes up to make the stop.
00:12:15Ray Rhodes, we were talking about,
00:12:17you were talking about just a second ago,
00:12:19what a job he's done with the Eagles.
00:12:20He was named, of course, close to the year.
00:12:23And the more you talk to him,
00:12:24the more you realize how efficient
00:12:26and what a job he's done.
00:12:27Well, you know, he took his team down to Vero Beach, Florida,
00:12:30and he said he wanted to go down there
00:12:32and train like it was a heavyweight fight.
00:12:34Take the players away, get them down there,
00:12:37and have a training camp.
00:12:38And he said, the thing we have to do,
00:12:40we can't have open fist in this game,
00:12:42so we have to come in here with our fist ball today.
00:12:47Peet chased by Leon Lett, and down.
00:12:51Peet sacked by Lett.
00:12:52Peet sacked by Lett.
00:12:54Back at the six.
00:12:56And with Charles Haley out,
00:12:57if they're going to get a big play,
00:12:59if they're going to get a pass rusher,
00:13:01it has to be Leon Lett.
00:13:03Here's Leon Lett here.
00:13:04He's working against Guy McIntyre.
00:13:07And you see the big cat there?
00:13:08He just starts it.
00:13:09He just throws McIntyre.
00:13:11You see, he took that left hand,
00:13:12and he just took McIntyre
00:13:14and just put him right out of the ground.
00:13:17Comes out of the end zone.
00:13:18Deion Sanders is deep.
00:13:20Sanders handles.
00:13:24Inside the 20.
00:13:29Tripped up by Barry Wilburn.
00:13:3221-yard return by number 21.
00:13:35You can tell this is a big game.
00:13:36This is the first time the Cowboys
00:13:38have used Deion Sanders as the punt returner.
00:13:42And you always use your best player as a punt returner
00:13:45in the biggest games.
00:13:46That's the definition of what this game is.
00:13:49When he gets that ball, he is exciting.
00:13:53The officials are having a meeting midfield.
00:13:58You see the moves that Deion made,
00:14:00although two of them don't have their hats on.
00:14:02When they don't have their hats on,
00:14:03that means something happened out of bounds.
00:14:05Jerry Austin is the referee.
00:14:10That's hitting out of bounds.
00:14:12Personal foul, number 43 of the kicking team.
00:14:15Going out of bounds to hit a receiving player
00:14:18during the run back.
00:14:2015 yards from the spot of the foul.
00:14:22First down.
00:14:23Greg Briggs.
00:14:25And any time you see an official with his hat off,
00:14:28that's where he throws his hat,
00:14:30when stuff happens out of bounds.
00:14:32See right there, he hit him when he was out of bounds.
00:14:35He didn't let him get back in.
00:14:39Nothing, nothing score.
00:14:41The Cowboys have the ball starting in Eagle territory.
00:14:45That's something the Eagles are pretty used to.
00:14:49And today, there's no exception.
00:14:52The Cowboys need to make something happen
00:14:54with this kind of field position.
00:14:56Aikman flag on the play.
00:14:58Aikman throws across the middle.
00:15:00Incomplete.
00:15:02Michael Irvin was the intended receiver.
00:15:04You know, the Cowboys, I think,
00:15:06have to make this game a physical game
00:15:08because that's what they do.
00:15:09And they have to out-physical them.
00:15:11And the first time they had the ball,
00:15:13I was shocked that they felt that they had to trick them.
00:15:16Number 59 of the defense.
00:15:18Five yards.
00:15:19Repeat first down.
00:15:20Mike Mamoula offside.
00:15:23Yeah, here's Mike Mamoula right up here.
00:15:25Now, Troy Aikman, watch his head
00:15:27and see if maybe with his hard count
00:15:30that that doesn't draw him offside.
00:15:32You see when Mamoula jumped?
00:15:33It was when Troy Aikman made that, boom,
00:15:35he made that head move.
00:15:37And then Mamoula was reading
00:15:39Troy Aikman's head and movement.
00:15:41First and five at the Eagle 38.
00:15:45Emmitt Smith.
00:15:48Emmitt Smith setting his feet inside the 25,
00:15:51about the 23.
00:15:54Finally stopped by Mark McMillan.
00:15:56Yeah, that's what they have to do.
00:15:57Get in there behind Larry Allen.
00:15:59Get in there behind Eric Williams.
00:16:01You'll follow Darryl Johnston.
00:16:03You'll get that type of block.
00:16:05Get that type of block.
00:16:06You see, get this type of guy.
00:16:08Get him going sideways
00:16:09and get him knocked back and come off
00:16:11and get on the next guy.
00:16:13And then just make runs like that
00:16:14and just keep going at him
00:16:16and spinning and running
00:16:17and you don't have to trick him
00:16:19with plays like going to the moose on third down.
00:16:22First and ten at the 23 for Dallas.
00:16:24Clock running with just over eight minutes
00:16:26left in the first quarter.
00:16:28No score.
00:16:32Aikman back to throw it.
00:16:34Offset out to Smith.
00:16:35Nobody's covering him.
00:16:36Emmitt Smith down close to a first down.
00:16:40Greg Jackson knocked him out of bounds.
00:16:43Yeah, that's what you can get
00:16:45because you know on that side
00:16:47that he throws it to
00:16:48is the side that they're doubling Michael Irvin.
00:16:50You see, they're doubling Michael Irvin down here.
00:16:53So on that side,
00:16:54Michael Irvin runs his guys off
00:16:56and then they run in behind him
00:16:58with Emmitt Smith.
00:17:00Emmitt looked as if he expected to get hit
00:17:02and covered up the ball.
00:17:03Yeah, now here's Michael Irvin you see
00:17:05and he's going to run off.
00:17:06He really runs off two guys.
00:17:08In fact, it's a form of a pick
00:17:10but he runs two guys off
00:17:12and then that opens it up for Emmitt Smith.
00:17:14They did get a first down to Aikman.
00:17:17A lot of time.
00:17:22Shots out of bounds at the 10.
00:17:24Yeah, real good coverage on that one
00:17:26on Michael Irvin, Pat,
00:17:27because it was a bootleg.
00:17:29He was bootlegging to his right.
00:17:30He had Michael Irvin in the end zone
00:17:32and he couldn't throw it to him.
00:17:34You have to give that one to Bobby Taylor.
00:17:36In fact, here's Michael Irvin here.
00:17:39Here's Bobby Taylor
00:17:41and the bootleg is going to be coming.
00:17:43Irvin is coming here
00:17:45then he's trying to get back to the corner.
00:17:47You see, Taylor has great coverage on him.
00:17:49You see, he's between Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman.
00:17:52So Troy Aikman couldn't throw the ball.
00:17:54That's who he was trying to get it to.
00:17:56He had to run out of bounds.
00:17:57Second and seven.
00:18:00Emmitt Smith.
00:18:02Down near the five, about the six.
00:18:05Ronnie Dixon made the stop.
00:18:08You see, now they're starting to get
00:18:11a little movement in that middle.
00:18:13Remember earlier when
00:18:14and the first time they had the ball
00:18:16the Eagles were getting penetration.
00:18:18Now the Cowboy offensive line
00:18:20is handling that middle
00:18:21so that Emmitt Smith can either take it to the right
00:18:23and leave it there
00:18:24or take it to the right and cut it back.
00:18:26And here comes a pretty good test.
00:18:27Third down.
00:18:28But the Eagles can really dig in.
00:18:30Third and about four.
00:18:31Yeah, this is a passing situation.
00:18:37Emmitt Smith is behind.
00:18:38Aikman off to his right.
00:18:46Incomplete.
00:18:47And no flag.
00:18:50I think you have to say
00:18:51Bobby Taylor, he's a rookie.
00:18:53He made two big plays on this ground.
00:18:55The first one was the first down play.
00:18:57They tried to get the ball to Michael Irvin
00:18:59on the bootleg.
00:19:00Here's the third down play.
00:19:01Here they are up here.
00:19:03They're locked in, man-to-man coverage.
00:19:05Give him a little punch.
00:19:06And then he turned
00:19:07and he just got back there
00:19:08and he got between Michael Irvin and the ball.
00:19:11One thing about it,
00:19:12he's just as tall as Michael Irvin.
00:19:14He's about 6'3".
00:19:15And the thing that he said last night
00:19:17or Ray Rhodes said all the time,
00:19:18you have to be physical with Michael Irvin.
00:19:21Bonio.
00:19:24Hits the field goal.
00:19:27That's one for one in the playoffs,
00:19:29but that's his 26th in a row.
00:19:31Bonio.
00:19:32That one from 24 yards out
00:19:34and Dallas leads 3-0.
00:19:39Bonio set the kickoff.
00:19:40Charlie Connor is deep
00:19:44for Philadelphia.
00:19:52Dick Short.
00:19:54Garner at the 12.
00:19:59Now to about the 33.
00:20:01Right now for a McDonald's game break,
00:20:03let's send you to our Hollywood studio
00:20:05and James Brown.
00:20:06At great moments in Texas stadium history,
00:20:0824 years ago this week,
00:20:10the Cowboys and the Niners,
00:20:11second straight NFC championship game.
00:20:13John Brody's pass,
00:20:14intercepted by George Andre.
00:20:17That helped the Cowboys set up this
00:20:19Calvin Hill touchdown dive.
00:20:20Cowboys win it,
00:20:21go on to victory also in Super Bowl VI.
00:20:24Let's take it back to Pat and John.
00:20:27And back at Texas stadium,
00:20:29first and 10,
00:20:30Eagles,
00:20:31Garner and Saxon
00:20:33are the two running backs.
00:20:36Garner,
00:20:37hit behind the line of scrimmage,
00:20:38broke one tackle
00:20:41and got about five yards.
00:20:42And I'll tell you,
00:20:43if the Eagles are going to do anything,
00:20:46they're going to have to get Leon Lett bluffed
00:20:48because he's raising havoc there.
00:20:49I mean,
00:20:50they were just lucky on that,
00:20:51that he didn't get that thing tackled.
00:20:53But you talk,
00:20:54this is a way to play defensive tackle.
00:20:56Here's a ball you want to control
00:20:58and get back to that position.
00:21:00Watch Leon Lett do it.
00:21:02I mean,
00:21:03he just takes it,
00:21:04he just runs right by
00:21:05and pushes Guy McIntyre
00:21:06right into his own running back.
00:21:09He got about four second and six.
00:21:12Waters is the setback.
00:21:15Waters in motion and Pete back to throw.
00:21:17Incomplete.
00:21:19Knockdown intended for Ed West.
00:21:22You see how cool Dixon Edwards was on that?
00:21:25He just kind of stood there like
00:21:27he was in his zone and the ball came
00:21:29and he just went boom
00:21:30and just knocked it down
00:21:31like complete disdain for that pigskin.
00:21:38Word from the Cowboys is that
00:21:40Emmitt Smith has bruised ribs
00:21:43and whether or not he'll return is
00:21:46still a question.
00:21:48I would bet that Emmitt Smith will return.
00:21:51Three wide receivers,
00:21:53third and six eagles.
00:21:56Out quickly to Waters
00:21:58and he's knocked out of bounds
00:21:59short of a first down I believe.
00:22:01And that was one of those zone blitzes.
00:22:04You see that?
00:22:05They came in and blitzed
00:22:06and they dropped Chad Hennings out.
00:22:08That's really a sight with these zone blitzes now
00:22:11with these big defensive tackles
00:22:13are backing out.
00:22:15Chad Hennings is about 300 pounds
00:22:17and you see him watch the middle here
00:22:20and watch how the tackle block starts out.
00:22:23You see him right here?
00:22:24Here's Chad Hennings right here
00:22:25playing in the middle.
00:22:27That's a good play by Larry Brown
00:22:29to knock him out of bounds short.
00:22:32Sanders lets it bounce
00:22:34and he goes down it.
00:22:39They're still playing out there.
00:22:40Here comes Emmitt Smith.
00:22:43So that word about those bruised ribs
00:22:46the question has been answered already.
00:22:53Cold in Texas
00:22:55but not on the playing field.
00:22:58You can move around, you're just fine.
00:23:00Dallas leads 3-0.
00:23:02Eagles shift their defense.
00:23:04Aikman goes back to throw
00:23:05and throws outside.
00:23:07Pass is caught by Kevin Williams.
00:23:12That's going to be a big matchup today.
00:23:14All day we're going to see
00:23:16Kevin Williams out here
00:23:17against Mark McMillan.
00:23:19Now Mark McMillan is a little guy
00:23:21but Kevin Williams is a little guy too.
00:23:23And Mark McMillan is a heck of a cover corner.
00:23:26It's just that he's only about
00:23:275'7 and 145 pounds.
00:23:30But I'll tell you, he will battle you.
00:23:33That's just a good throw.
00:23:35Yeah, and that was the thing that Ray Rhodes would say.
00:23:37You know, we talk about matchups
00:23:39with Michael Irvin and Bobby Taylor.
00:23:40He said, you know, Kevin Williams
00:23:42is going to have a pretty good matchup
00:23:43after with Mark McMillan today.
00:23:47Aikman going deep for Irvin.
00:23:50And the pass is picked off by McMillan.
00:23:55McMillan, still on his feet.
00:23:58And cut down by Novacek.
00:24:00Finally.
00:24:01And I'll tell you, Bobby Taylor was there again.
00:24:03It was Bobby Taylor who had the coverage
00:24:05on Michael Irvin.
00:24:06Michael Irvin wanted to work on Bobby Taylor.
00:24:09The last time they played,
00:24:10Bobby Taylor, the rookie,
00:24:12got the NFC Defensive Player of the Week.
00:24:15That really bothered Michael Irvin.
00:24:17But you're going to see him.
00:24:18Here he is.
00:24:19Bobby Taylor again is on him.
00:24:20He's number 21.
00:24:22He's covering him.
00:24:23He's going to go with him.
00:24:24He's going to stop and go.
00:24:25He tries to get beyond him.
00:24:26Bobby Taylor runs with him.
00:24:27And watch.
00:24:28Taylor's going to get his hand up there.
00:24:29See his hand up there?
00:24:31He knocks the ball up in the air.
00:24:33And then Mark McMillan gets it.
00:24:35Great coverage by Bobby Taylor again.
00:24:39Waters.
00:24:40Ricky Waters gets it inside the Dallas 40
00:24:43to about the 38.
00:24:45Robert Jones made the stop.
00:24:50Ricky Waters just said,
00:24:51Just hand it to me.
00:24:52Give it to me.
00:24:53That's all we have to do.
00:24:54Look at their first three possessions.
00:24:56They had all three and outs.
00:24:57But they didn't have good starting position either.
00:25:00This time, they have good starting field position.
00:25:03Again, Bobby Taylor has made three excellent cover plays
00:25:08in his first quarter.
00:25:09And Mark down that turnover.
00:25:11The Eagles have been able to take advantage of them.
00:25:16That's Garner.
00:25:18Garner.
00:25:21Gets a couple of yards maybe.
00:25:25You see the guy that was up there in force.
00:25:27And maybe the most underrated player on this Cowboy team
00:25:31for a few years, I think, is Larry Brown.
00:25:33Playing better since Deion Sanders arrived.
00:25:36And he has to play better
00:25:37because Deion Sanders is going to take one guy on one side.
00:25:40And most teams are going to stay away from Deion Sanders.
00:25:43So when you're going to throw the ball away from Deion Sanders
00:25:47to an outside receiver, it's usually to Larry Brown.
00:25:50Third and four.
00:25:51Three wide receivers.
00:25:55Rodney Peet fires a pass that's caught by Fred Barnett.
00:26:00Inside the Dallas 20 about the 18-yard line.
00:26:03Scott Case tripped him up.
00:26:07Barnett has really come on of late.
00:26:09You're going to see Barnett up here,
00:26:11and he's going to run a slant and get hit right in here.
00:26:14So he starts in the outside.
00:26:16It's a zone defense, and he just gets caught right there,
00:26:19right in the middle.
00:26:20In fact, I don't know what Larry Brown stepped up on,
00:26:23but as Fred Barnett went to go in a slant,
00:26:26Larry Brown came up to the outside.
00:26:29First down Philadelphia at the Dallas 18.
00:26:33This is what Ray Rhodes said last night.
00:26:35He said he wants to turn the crowd against the Cowboys.
00:26:40Rodney Peet gets to Garner.
00:26:44Caught from behind by Lett, and then he got some help.
00:26:48And Rodney Peet is really upset on that one
00:26:51because they didn't get the ball in there soon enough,
00:26:54and he darn near got caught for not having enough.
00:26:58That's 13 plays.
00:27:00Charlie Garner has got four rushes.
00:27:02That's what Ray Rhodes hoped he'd be able to accomplish.
00:27:05Yeah, that was in the script, and he was hoping of those four plays
00:27:09that Charlie Garner would break one for a long run.
00:27:14Three wide receivers, second and long.
00:27:17Peet back, hands to Ricky Waters.
00:27:21Hands to Ricky Waters.
00:27:25Stopped short of the 10-yard line by Woodson and Brock Marion at about the 12.
00:27:32Brock Marion comes out with the ball, but Waters was down.
00:27:37Ricky Waters is probably one of the most excitable players
00:27:41in the National Football League,
00:27:43and he gets excited with himself and his teammates,
00:27:47and in that period, if things don't go well, he'll pout a little too.
00:27:51Yeah, sometimes it gets to be a detriment.
00:27:53Well, they're paying him a lot of money,
00:27:55and they're paying him a lot of money to win games,
00:27:58and they're paying him the most money to win big games.
00:28:01He wants the ball.
00:28:03He's the deep back on third and about four.
00:28:08Peet rolls out right.
00:28:14Close to it.
00:28:17Looks like about two feet short.
00:28:20This is going to be an interesting call.
00:28:22I'll tell you what.
00:28:23Ricky Waters did get a pretty good block on Tony Tolbert,
00:28:27and that let Peet get to the outside.
00:28:30This is going to be interesting because here it is.
00:28:32It's Rodney Peet against Darren Woodson.
00:28:35You would think that Woodson would win most of those battles.
00:28:38He did.
00:28:39He hit him, and he stopped him.
00:28:42Let's talk about this one.
00:28:45That's close to the end of the quarter.
00:28:47It might be, but they were signaling also for a timeout.
00:28:51It is the end of the quarter.
00:28:53Yeah, he doesn't want a timeout because this is an automatic timeout.
00:28:57So it's the end of the quarter with the score, Dallas 3, Philadelphia nothing,
00:29:01but the Eagles close.
00:29:09Field goal.
00:29:10Team is in for Philadelphia.
00:29:11Gary Anderson with Tommy Hutton holding.
00:29:20Anderson has been almost automatic, and he still is almost automatic.
00:29:25That's good, and we have a tie at three.
00:29:31That was the first play of the second quarter, 3-3 tie.
00:29:36Divisional playoff game between the Eagles and Cowboys.
00:29:41Philadelphia about to kick off.
00:29:42Gary Anderson, Kevin Williams, and Brock Marion back deep.
00:29:46It's going to be Williams at the nine.
00:29:52Down at the 30.
00:29:55Hit down by Mark Woodard.
00:29:59We talked about Ray Rhodes and taking his Philadelphia Eagles down to Vero Beach
00:30:03and like a heavyweight fight training.
00:30:05And this first quarter has been kind of like a heavyweight fight.
00:30:10Like the first couple of rounds.
00:30:11Yeah, where you're kind of feeling each other out.
00:30:13Both teams look awfully tentative.
00:30:15They look conservative offensively.
00:30:18Look like they're kind of afraid to make mistakes,
00:30:21and that's a big thing about these playoff teams too,
00:30:24these playoff games that any time you do make a mistake, it's magnified.
00:30:31That's Emmitt Smith, and he's got a big hole.
00:30:33Emmitt Smith's got a Dallas first down.
00:30:35Deion Sanders was in a drive receiver.
00:30:38Greg Jackson, the safety man, had to make the stop on Emmitt Smith.
00:30:41You know, that's the one thing they learned last time,
00:30:44that if they put Deion Sanders outside, that it's a little easier running inside
00:30:51because that gets the secondary off because they're worried about doubling Michael Irvin,
00:30:56and they're worried about Deion Sanders out on that other side.
00:31:00And look at some of these holes this could create.
00:31:02Daryl Johnston, the great block.
00:31:05A little of it was Deion Sanders.
00:31:07A lot of it was Daryl Johnston in the offensive line.
00:31:14And again, Emmitt Smith, who's hit behind the line.
00:31:21That's Mark Gunn.
00:31:23Yeah, Rodney Pete's leaving the field.
00:31:26Remember that third down play, Pat, where Darren Woodson,
00:31:29he was trying to get that first down, and Darren Woodson gave him a shot,
00:31:34and it looked like that shot that Darren Woodson gave him
00:31:37could have been right on his right shoulder.
00:31:39Plus, he had the flu and was weak all week long.
00:31:43Even though they did go to Florida, he arrived with the flu.
00:31:46Yeah, but I think that was the shot, that third down shot.
00:31:51Second and nine.
00:31:55Johnston was spit out wide to the left.
00:31:58The pass goes to Emmitt Smith.
00:31:59He shakes the first tackle, and Emmitt down to the Philadelphia 35.
00:32:07That was a great decision by Troy Aikman
00:32:09because he got Emmitt Smith on Kurt Govea.
00:32:12Kurt Govea is usually a good defender.
00:32:15And there you see Govea is there.
00:32:17He has a hold of him.
00:32:18In fact, Govea had a hold of his jersey from behind.
00:32:21Emmitt Smith is so powerful and so strong that even if you do that,
00:32:25that doesn't even slow him up.
00:32:27That once he got the step on Kurt Govea, then he was able to break it.
00:32:33First and ten, Dallas at the Eagle 35.
00:32:37Three-three time.
00:32:39Aikman again gives to Emmitt Smith, and Emmitt Smith gets good yardage
00:32:43down inside the 30, this time stopped by Govea
00:32:47at about the 28.
00:32:48Yeah, Govea stopped him after he was blocked by Moose Johnston.
00:32:52Watch this.
00:32:53This is the thing that they get.
00:32:54They get this power.
00:32:55Here it is.
00:32:56They get the lead, and here he comes on Govea.
00:32:58And you see right there the movement that he gets?
00:33:00Now, if you can get a lead block like that and blocking like that on that side,
00:33:05look what happened.
00:33:06Look, you get the double team, then you get the great lead block.
00:33:10They just knocked things down.
00:33:11You see Nate Newton?
00:33:13He just knocked his guy right on his back.
00:33:15That's what you were talking about.
00:33:16That's what they have to do.
00:33:18Here's Johnston.
00:33:19Close to a first down.
00:33:23A little bit short.
00:33:24Yeah, I mean, now they remind you of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:33:28You can see they're getting Randall Cunningham ready over there.
00:33:32What they're doing is they're putting some air in his helmet.
00:33:35They got those air things, and they pump him up to get that tight fit.
00:33:42Rodney Peet got kicked in the head,
00:33:45so they've taken him into the locker room to check him.
00:33:49Whether or not he'll be able to return is still a question.
00:33:53And Randall Cunningham didn't look like he was ready to play.
00:33:56In fact, his wife had a baby this week in Las Vegas,
00:33:58and he didn't get back until yesterday's practice.
00:34:01Emmett Smith gets the Dallas first down before he's stopped by Greg Jackson.
00:34:08This is the thing that we were talking about, though, Pat.
00:34:11It's not just offensive line.
00:34:12Just watch these guys here.
00:34:14There's Nate Newton, and he starts with mark 2 and A,
00:34:17and when big Nate gets stuff going backwards, it's just going backwards.
00:34:21Eric Williams brings his guy and flops him all the way from the other side.
00:34:26This Dallas Cowboy offensive line is starting to take this game over right now.
00:34:32Dallas has a first down at the Eagle 21.
00:34:35Deion Sanders is in the game.
00:34:38Now he's lined up in the slot position to the right.
00:34:42Now he's caught on a reverse.
00:34:45Sanders gets away from one man.
00:34:47He's got some room now.
00:34:50Sanders, touchdown.
00:35:03From 21 yards away.
00:35:09That's his first touchdown of the year.
00:35:17You're going to see him here.
00:35:19Again, he comes in here.
00:35:20They start in motion.
00:35:21Now they fake the ball to Emmett Smith.
00:35:24Deion starts on the reverse.
00:35:26Then he stops the reverse, and he reverses back the other way on his own.
00:35:31Got a little block with Bobby Taylor there from Michael Irvin.
00:35:36Deion's extra point is good, and it's 10-3, Cowboy.
00:35:42That is why they brought Deion Sanders here, to make some things happen.
00:35:49That's the first rushing touchdown of his career.
00:35:53Deion Sanders, bring him back here.
00:35:55He doesn't like what he sees here, so he just goes back that way.
00:35:58So you have a reverse, and then a reverse of a reverse.
00:36:02You see a reverse?
00:36:03You start, you fake the ball, then you hand on the reverse,
00:36:06and you have a guy like Deion Sanders go back against the grain.
00:36:10Picked up two blocks, one by Emmett Smith, the other one by Michael Irvin.
00:36:15Garner feels Bonio's kickoff.
00:36:19And he is hit at about the 23, and knocked backwards by David Lang.
00:36:27This team is fired up now.
00:36:30Again, this is Deion Sanders' run,
00:36:32but Emmett Smith had a lot to do with getting the ball down there,
00:36:36and then the offensive line had a lot to do with getting it in position
00:36:41so Deion Sanders could dance like this.
00:36:44Randall Cunningham is in at quarterback for the Eagles.
00:36:50You say you wonder how ready Randall Cunningham is to play.
00:36:54They went down to Vero Beach.
00:36:56Randall Cunningham's wife had a baby, a baby boy, this week in Las Vegas.
00:37:01He missed three days of practice, was back, got back yesterday.
00:37:05They start with two tight ends.
00:37:07A handoff is to Ricky Waters.
00:37:09Waters gets good yardage, close to first down yardage.
00:37:16We were talking about the Cowboys, though,
00:37:18and how they have Troy Aikman, they have Michael Irvin, they have Emmett Smith,
00:37:22but it all goes to the offensive line,
00:37:24and this drive right here, I know that Deion Sanders made a great run,
00:37:28Emmett Smith made runs,
00:37:30but that drive there was the offensive line of the Cowboys.
00:37:35Second and very short for Randall Cunningham and his Eagle offensive unit.
00:37:39Second and one. Waters and Saxon behind Cunningham.
00:37:45Barnett was the man in motion.
00:37:47Ricky Waters gets the Eagle first down,
00:37:50or very, very close to it.
00:37:53Maybe when they mark it, they still think, yeah, he has it.
00:37:57Yeah, what they're doing now is they're doubling Leon Lett.
00:38:00They know that Guy McIntyre isn't going to be able to handle Leon Lett on the run.
00:38:06So what they're going to do, if they're going to get anything in there,
00:38:09they're going to have to double him.
00:38:12We were talking to Big Leon yesterday.
00:38:15He was saying he's at least 6'6",
00:38:18and his weight fluctuates up and down.
00:38:20He's about 295, about as high as he's been.
00:38:23And he's playing well.
00:38:27Cunningham swings it up to Waters.
00:38:30Broke one tackle.
00:38:31Taken down by Larry Brown.
00:38:38In fact, they're going to double him every time and then get away from him.
00:38:42We're talking about Leon Lett here.
00:38:43Just watch.
00:38:44In fact, they're going to end up really, at the end of the play,
00:38:47they have like three guys around them.
00:38:49Because they are not going to let him get the penetration,
00:38:52and that's the way to do it.
00:38:54I mean, that's smart by the Eagles.
00:38:55If a guy's giving you trouble, double him, stop him,
00:38:58and make one of the other guys pick up the slack.
00:39:00Two tight ends.
00:39:01Second down at the 40.
00:39:05And a handoff is to Garner,
00:39:08who, with a good second effort,
00:39:10got close to a first down.
00:39:11Stopped by Darren Smith.
00:39:13Charlie Garner is only 5'9", or about 185 pounds,
00:39:17but he runs inside very well, too.
00:39:20In fact, we were saying last night that what he likes to do is run inside early
00:39:24and then draw the defense in,
00:39:27and then later in the game, in the second half,
00:39:29take some of those same runs and bounce them to the outside.
00:39:34Third and about a yard.
00:39:40They better not run a Leon Lett here, because they can't handle him.
00:39:43Waters and Saxon behind Cunningham.
00:39:48Warner didn't get it.
00:39:51Didn't handle Leon Lett, either.
00:39:53They didn't run at Leon Lett.
00:39:55They ran away from Leon Lett, and he still made the play.
00:39:59You talk about a defensive player who's going to dominate a game.
00:40:02Watch, they're going to run to Leon Lett's left.
00:40:05They try and cut him, and they can't do that.
00:40:07He just jumps over it, just penetration, runs it down,
00:40:11and stops it so that they have to punt.
00:40:13He is dominating this first half.
00:40:15Hutton will punt, and Deion Sanders is deep,
00:40:19and he'll get another chance.
00:40:25Almost broke it.
00:40:27Tripped up at the 21, but he almost broke another one.
00:40:31Which team has played in and won the most playoff games?
00:40:37That's our Affleck trivia question.
00:40:39Which team has played in and won the most playoff games?
00:40:4610-3 Dallas in this divisional playoff game.
00:40:50Cowboys ball at their own 21.
00:40:52Daryl Johnston on the move behind Aikman.
00:40:55And Emmitt Smith gets the carry.
00:40:59They've finally given Deion Sanders a rest now.
00:41:03He was on offense, and then he was on the special teams,
00:41:08and then he was on defense, and he finally gets a rest.
00:41:126.35 may get left in the first half with the Cowboys leading 10-3.
00:41:20The only touchdown by Deion Sanders on a reverse
00:41:25that he turned in from nothing into something.
00:41:29And then he came right back and played the whole series on defense
00:41:32and right back on special teams again.
00:41:34It's like the old days.
00:41:36Aikman to Kevin Williams.
00:41:39Right now for a McDonald's game break.
00:41:41Again, let's send you back to James Brown in Hollywood.
00:41:43All right, Pat. New Year's Day 1978.
00:41:46Dallas and Minnesota for the NFC title.
00:41:48No contest.
00:41:50Tony Dorsett rolls into the end zone,
00:41:52helping the Cowboys manhandle the Vikes 23-6.
00:41:55Dallas goes on to win Super Bowl XII.
00:41:58Back to Pat and John.
00:42:00Back at Texas Stadium, and Deion Sanders is in with the offensive unit.
00:42:06An interesting thing, Pat, is Michael Irvin has yet to catch a ball.
00:42:11Bobby Taylor has done a good job.
00:42:14Emmitt Smith outside the 35.
00:42:19Again, our Affleck trivia question,
00:42:22which team has played in and won the most playoff games?
00:42:28And the answer, the Dallas Cowboys have played in 47 playoff games.
00:42:33They have 28 victories.
00:42:36You get there a lot, you play a lot, don't you?
00:42:38You'd think another team that would be up there is the Miami Dolphins
00:42:42and Don Shula and the job that he's done over his career,
00:42:46winning more games than any coach in the history of the game.
00:42:51He retired this year, and he was one of the great ones.
00:42:54We wish him our best.
00:42:56Here's Aikman going deep. He's got a man wide open this time.
00:43:01Kevin Williams was behind everybody.
00:43:05Michael Zordich finally knocked him out of bounds,
00:43:08but that's got to be a mix-up in coverage somewhere for him to get that open.
00:43:12Watch him. He's right out here,
00:43:14and it looks like one of those things that McMillan was playing zone,
00:43:18and he expected a safety.
00:43:19He expected Michael Zordich to get in there behind him,
00:43:22and Zordich didn't get over.
00:43:24But I think even if it were a zone, McMillan, if he's going to do that,
00:43:28he has to bump Williams when he comes off the line.
00:43:31He just kind of let him go, and Zordich didn't get over,
00:43:34and Troy Aikman was smart enough to find it, see it, and get it to Kevin Williams.
00:43:39First down, Aikman fakes to Smith.
00:43:42Up the middle, Darrell Johnson, and the Mooses down to one.
00:43:48Romanowski tripped him up.
00:43:50Now the Cowboys are starting to look like the Cowboys.
00:43:53They want to stop Michael Irvin.
00:43:55They want to double him.
00:43:56They want to do all these things, and they start going to Kevin Williams.
00:44:00They go to Jay Novacek, and now they go to Darrell Johnson.
00:44:03Watch, they're just going to get the Moose here.
00:44:05Now you don't expect this.
00:44:06You don't expect from the eye formation the Moose to get deep.
00:44:10He runs a flat, and then he just comes up and then runs into the post.
00:44:14That is a heck of a pattern by a fullback.
00:44:16It started to a flat, then up, then post.
00:44:20Who would have thought?
00:44:21Nobody knew the ball was loose, but he was down.
00:44:24Johnson.
00:44:26Smith, and Emmett Smith.
00:44:28Touchdown, Dallas.
00:44:33Now the Cowboys are looking like the Cowboys.
00:44:35The Cowboys.
00:44:51Emmett got 25 touchdowns to set an all-time record in the regular season.
00:44:58He is proud of that, and should be.
00:45:03O'Neal for the extra point.
00:45:05He's also proud of the touchdown he just scored.
00:45:10On that drive, Aikman was three out of three for 72 yards.
00:45:15Big one to Williams.
00:45:16Big one to Johnson.
00:45:21Against the Eagles, the total offense for the Cowboys was 196 yards.
00:45:25That was in Philadelphia.
00:45:27They've already exceeded that today.
00:45:29The Cowboys have had that bye week, that week off, and it's starting to show
00:45:34they look very, very sharp and very, very fresh in this second period.
00:45:38The ball bounces between Garner's legs.
00:45:41He's down to one.
00:45:44Robert Bailey.
00:45:48Knocks Garner down at the one-yard line, and that's where the Eagles will start.
00:45:52Yeah, the kickoff isn't like a punt.
00:45:54You can't let it roll.
00:45:55You have to feel the kickoff.
00:45:58This thing takes a funny bounce.
00:45:59Charlie Garner, I think, intended to field it all the way,
00:46:02and then he looked, and it went between his legs.
00:46:05Now, he has to pick up that ball, because if he doesn't,
00:46:07if the Cowboys get that ball, it's live,
00:46:10and it would have been the Cowboys' ball right there.
00:46:13They finally mark it down at the three,
00:46:16but the Eagles start deep in their own territory,
00:46:18and Randall Cunningham is still their quarterback.
00:46:23He's been in situations like this before,
00:46:27but he hasn't practiced this week,
00:46:29as John Madden pointed out a moment ago.
00:46:32Only once.
00:46:35Cunningham goes deep.
00:46:39Incomplete with flags all over the place.
00:46:42Chris T. Jones was the intended receiver.
00:46:45This is going to be an interesting one,
00:46:47but when they say, bring it up here,
00:46:49it's going to be against the Cowboys.
00:46:51It's going to be on defense.
00:46:53When the official throws it and stays there and says,
00:46:56come on here, that's going to be against the defense.
00:47:02Here's Larry Brown right here.
00:47:06Chris T. Jones is number 82,
00:47:09and you see now they're beyond the five yards.
00:47:12The ball is in the air.
00:47:14I don't know.
00:47:15There's just a lot of bumping there.
00:47:17This is a tough thing.
00:47:20They have to do something in the offseason
00:47:22on this pass interference rule.
00:47:24Right about that.
00:47:25Here's Cunningham back to throw.
00:47:27Chased from behind, but Cunningham can run and does.
00:47:33Brock Marion tripped him up.
00:47:35Randall Cunningham, because of the injury to Rodney Peet,
00:47:39is the quarterback,
00:47:40and here is where Darren Woodson hit Peet
00:47:43as he scrambled for a first down.
00:47:45This was a third down play.
00:47:47Darren Woodson hits him right there at the end of the play.
00:47:51I guess just knocked him out.
00:47:54Darren Woodson has that kind of power.
00:47:57We talk about fights and heavyweight fights
00:47:59and getting ready for them.
00:48:00That was a heavyweight punch by Darren Woodson.
00:48:03Cunningham gets to Ricky Waters.
00:48:05Waters gets an eagle first down,
00:48:08crosses the 50, gets into Dallas territory.
00:48:11Remember the Cowboys led the last time these two teams met,
00:48:1617-6 at the half at Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia.
00:48:19The Eagles came back to win it.
00:48:21I'm sure that's what both coaches are thinking about right now,
00:48:24and I'm sure both coaches are going to talk about that at halftime.
00:48:28Barry Switzer is going to say,
00:48:30Hey, we had this, it was like this last time,
00:48:32we let it go away.
00:48:33Ray Rhodes is going to say,
00:48:34Hey, we were here before and we whipped them,
00:48:36so let's go do it again.
00:48:38Three wide receivers, carpenters,
00:48:40the man in motion, Cunningham back to throw.
00:48:43Blitz is on a screen call.
00:48:45They had the right call,
00:48:46but Cunningham didn't have time to get it to Waters.
00:48:51It's been the Leon Led is all over the place.
00:48:54He didn't come in that rush,
00:48:55but he was the guy that read that screen.
00:48:58Watch Leon Led here.
00:48:59He's going to see the screen.
00:49:00They got the blitz.
00:49:01He goes in.
00:49:02He's going back in coverage now.
00:49:04That's one of those zone blitzes,
00:49:06and then he was out there reading that screen.
00:49:09So did Shante Carver.
00:49:10I think if I were the Cowboys,
00:49:12I think I would let Leon Led rush to pass her every time.
00:49:16I don't think I'd drop him out of there.
00:49:18I'd drop the other guys out, not Leon.
00:49:20Second and ten.
00:49:23Cunningham back to throw.
00:49:24Protection is pretty good this time,
00:49:27but the pass is not.
00:49:30Ricky Waters, the intended receiver,
00:49:31covered by Darren Smith and covered very well.
00:49:34And I think Cunningham was probably smart
00:49:36not to throw a good pass there,
00:49:38because, like I said,
00:49:39Darren Smith was right there with Ricky Waters.
00:49:42If he would have thrown the pass,
00:49:44well, I think he was probably throwing it
00:49:45as much away from Darren Smith
00:49:47as he was trying to get it to Ricky Waters.
00:49:50Brings up third and ten.
00:49:51They'll get one more play before the two-minute warning.
00:49:5517-3, Cowboys leading.
00:50:04Three wide receivers.
00:50:08Cunningham back to throw it.
00:50:09Rushed by Tolbert, and Tolbert has him.
00:50:11Bumble!
00:50:13But he was down.
00:50:15Antone Davis had trouble with Tony Tolbert
00:50:17in the first game, too.
00:50:19Tolbert that time just went right around Antone Davis.
00:50:24And you can see, here's Antone Davis right here.
00:50:26Watch Tolbert.
00:50:29He just hits him, just goes right around him,
00:50:30right beyond him.
00:50:33The Cowboys are coming on defense now.
00:50:36Two-minute warning.
00:50:3817-3, Cowboys leading.
00:50:45Don't miss the excitement as the playoff race concludes
00:50:47with the final showdown on the road to the Super Bowl.
00:50:50Check your local listings for the game and time in your area.
00:50:53Deion Sanders back deep.
00:50:55And the whole stadium is yelling,
00:50:56Deion, Deion, Deion,
00:50:58and he was leading them there.
00:51:00Yep.
00:51:02Hutton back to punt it for the Eagles.
00:51:09Good kick, and Sanders will have his chance.
00:51:12He gets away from it now,
00:51:13and it bounces into the end zone.
00:51:16He just tricked him there.
00:51:17He was trying to stand there, stand there, stand there
00:51:19as long as he could.
00:51:20He was on the 10-yard line.
00:51:22The old rule, if you're on the 10,
00:51:24and the ball goes over your head,
00:51:25just let it go into the end zone
00:51:27because you get the ball back on the 20.
00:51:32He tricked me, too.
00:51:35Yeah, we talk about matchups.
00:51:37That was one right there that we just saw
00:51:39that is one of the good ones today
00:51:42when Eric Williams, and we'll see it right now,
00:51:44Eric Williams going against William Fuller.
00:51:48That's a real battle.
00:51:49I remember three years ago where Eric Williams
00:51:54beat William Fuller about as bad as an offensive tackle
00:51:57can beat a defensive end.
00:51:59Well, he took himself out of the game finally.
00:52:01Eric Williams isn't what Eric Williams used to be,
00:52:04but he's still awfully tough and awfully good.
00:52:07Emmitt Smith stopped by William Thomas.
00:52:12Because they've been going after it all day.
00:52:14You know, every time that they pass,
00:52:16it's been Fuller against Eric Williams.
00:52:20Again, I think Eric Williams is winning that battle today
00:52:23as is the whole, especially in this second period,
00:52:26as is the whole offensive line of the Cowboys.
00:52:29Second and seven.
00:52:32Kevin Williams comes wide left.
00:52:34Irvin's up to the right.
00:52:38Aikman's back to throw it.
00:52:43Lofts it in the direction of Michael Irvin.
00:52:45Incomplete.
00:52:47A minute and six seconds left to play in the first half.
00:52:50Yeah, we were talking about the battle.
00:52:52Here's Eric Williams.
00:52:53Here's William Fuller.
00:52:54Now, just watch how they keep going.
00:52:57This was one in the last series.
00:52:59It was thrown to Daryl Johnston.
00:53:00But what? Battle, battle, battle.
00:53:02Ball's thrown.
00:53:03They don't know from that.
00:53:04I mean, watch.
00:53:05I mean, they're still going.
00:53:06One got one face mask.
00:53:08The other guy got the other guy's face mask.
00:53:10Referee in there.
00:53:11Play's over.
00:53:12But those guys just go after it.
00:53:14Like Eric Williams said,
00:53:16when I put a helmet on, I'm a different guy.
00:53:20Deion Sanders is lined up in the slot to the left
00:53:23as the Eagles quickly take a timeout.
00:53:26Maybe they weren't quite ready for it.
00:53:29So it's a Philadelphia timeout.
00:53:32They have two left.
00:53:36Anyway they can.
00:53:37It's the Little Caesars 12th annual All-Madden team.
00:53:42Yeah, last time we were here, we raced that blimp.
00:53:45I remember.
00:53:46Yeah, we raced it and beat it.
00:53:50Was it easy?
00:53:51No, no, it wasn't easy.
00:53:52From here to Tyler, it was tight.
00:53:54Then we got him after we got to Tyler.
00:53:56Well, that's not very far.
00:53:58I know.
00:53:59It's still Texas.
00:54:03Eggman gives it to Emmitt Smith.
00:54:07And Emmitt
00:54:09is short of a first down by a couple.
00:54:11You just see how strong Larry Allen is.
00:54:14I mean, I think that he's not only the best guard in football,
00:54:18but one of the best offensive linemen, period.
00:54:21But just watch him when he pulls out here.
00:54:24And he's going to come out here and he just stays on his feet
00:54:27and just kind of bumps a guy and just knocks him off.
00:54:30Watch 73 here.
00:54:31Watch him right there.
00:54:32Boom.
00:54:33So he just knocks him off.
00:54:34And then just that little bump,
00:54:36that creates about a five-yard running space for Emmitt Smith.
00:54:41So the Cowboys will have to front.
00:54:43Have to punt.
00:54:44Rob Carpenter is back deep.
00:54:46This is John Chen.
00:54:48And his kick chases Carpenter all the way back to his 21-yard line
00:54:53where he slipped down.
00:54:54There's a flag thrown over in front of the Eagle bench.
00:54:58Yeah, and that's the thing.
00:54:59There's a flag and two hats.
00:55:01So it's going to be one of those things out of bounds again
00:55:04because it was on the outside guy running down the field.
00:55:07So when you see the officials again, flags and hats.
00:55:10You see two hatless officials,
00:55:12that means something bad happened out of bounds.
00:55:15There's a guy in this weather who doesn't want to throw his hat
00:55:17because if you lose your heat,
00:55:19you always lose it through the top of your head.
00:55:21So you need a hat.
00:55:23You always want to keep your hat on.
00:55:25You don't want to throw your hat unless you really have to.
00:55:27Personal foul.
00:55:29Unnecessary roughness on the receiving team.
00:55:32Number 45 going out of bounds and hit a kicking team player during the kick.
00:55:38The enforcement is from the spot where possession changed.
00:55:43Half the distance to the goal.
00:55:45You see here, the guy going down the field gets hit out of bounds right there.
00:55:49Twice we had that happen.
00:55:51Yeah, well, it was two times.
00:55:53You see the officials without their hats.
00:55:55You know that's what they're going to call.
00:55:57We haven't seen that call, but once or twice all year long
00:56:00and twice already in the first half of this game.
00:56:03See how heat does come out of the top of your head?
00:56:06Look at it just coming off of Nate's head there.
00:56:09That's where it escapes.
00:56:10If you have heat in your body and you want to let it out, you take your hat off.
00:56:15Yeah.
00:56:16What you could do is you could have a barbecue on that head.
00:56:20Nate's got a lot of room to let it out.
00:56:22Yeah.
00:56:23You could cook like some burgers on there.
00:56:26Look at it.
00:56:27Now you're talking.
00:56:28This is football.
00:56:29When you got steam coming out of your head and your mouth,
00:56:32now you're talking football.
00:56:33You're controlling that offensive line.
00:56:35This is what it's all about.
00:56:37It's a playoff game.
00:56:38It's a playoff game.
00:56:39If you win, you go to the championship.
00:56:41What are you talking about?
00:56:43Here's Randall Cunningham.
00:56:45Back to throw.
00:56:47Pass is complete to Calvin Williams.
00:56:50Enough for an Eagle first down.
00:56:52They used one timeout, so they have two left.
00:56:56Now he's in a hurry up.
00:57:03Cunningham, pass caught.
00:57:08Calvin Williams, the receiver, now they take their second timeout.
00:57:13One thing for not practicing and for not playing much this year,
00:57:17Randall Cunningham looks pretty sharp and pretty confident.
00:57:21His throws have been very sharp.
00:57:24Yeah, he looks relaxed.
00:57:26Maybe sometimes, you know, that does help some guys
00:57:29when they don't know they're going to play
00:57:31because they don't have all that tenseness build up and all that stuff.
00:57:36In fact, Randall Cunningham was so relaxed,
00:57:39they had to pump air in his helmet before they put him in.
00:57:42Don't forget, coming up on the Dockers halftime report,
00:57:45J.B., Terry, Howie, and Jimmy.
00:57:47First half highlights, Indianapolis-Kansas City preview,
00:57:51and Brett Favre will be interviewed.
00:57:53Yeah, what a job Brett Favre has done in the Green Bay Packers.
00:57:57Congratulations to them, to Mike Holmgren,
00:57:59and I'll tell you another guy in that organization
00:58:02who really doesn't get enough credit is Ron Wolfe.
00:58:04Right.
00:58:05He's the guy that, you know, brought Mike Holmgren in,
00:58:09put that team together, traded for Brett Favre.
00:58:13I'll tell you, he has done an excellent job in that whole organization,
00:58:17and to see them in a championship game,
00:58:20it kind of gives you goose bumps, reminds you of the old days.
00:58:23Second and one.
00:58:2521 seconds left to play in the first half, 17-3.
00:58:31Cunningham fires complete.
00:58:35Fumble picked up by Fred Barnett.
00:58:42And the Eagles strike quickly.
00:58:45The clock's still running.
00:58:46They haven't called a timeout yet.
00:58:48Now the clock has stopped with eight seconds.
00:58:52Like I said, Randall Cunningham looks very sharp, very cool, very confident,
00:58:57and he's getting his receivers open,
00:58:59and this is something that they can regroup at halftime
00:59:02and maybe put some passing together
00:59:04because they thought they were going to have to run to win this game,
00:59:07but the way they're getting receivers open and Randall Cunningham is throwing it,
00:59:11that may be a bigger part of the second half of this game.
00:59:14That was Rob Carpenter who made the reception,
00:59:17and that is Carpenter that they're checking out right now.
00:59:21It's also Rob Carpenter who fumbled.
00:59:25You're going to see the hit right there.
00:59:27It's that third hit.
00:59:28He had one in front of him, a second one in front of him,
00:59:31and then it was the third one that really got him.
00:59:35That was the recovery by Barnett.
00:59:40The reception was by Carpenter.
00:59:42Yeah, you can see Carpenter right there.
00:59:45They're getting the back of his right shoulder.
00:59:47See the miss there.
00:59:49Then he gets off of that one.
00:59:51Then there's that hit right there.
00:59:52In fact, it was right on his right shoulder.
00:59:56The hit there by Darren Smith caused both the fumble and the injury,
01:00:02and they're rubbing the area right about the spot that Darren Smith put his helmet
01:00:08on Rob Carpenter.
01:00:10Ten seconds remain.
01:00:11They put two back on the clock.
01:00:1417-3.
01:00:15Remember, the score was 17-6 in Philadelphia.
01:00:24The pass from Cunningham in the direction of Chris T. Jones is incomplete.
01:00:30You know, Pat, the reason that they moved that ball back on the fumble,
01:00:36on the fourth down fumble in the last two minutes,
01:00:38the only guy that can recover it is the guy that fumbled it.
01:00:42The only guy that can advance it is the guy that fumbled it,
01:00:45so Barnett cannot advance it.
01:00:48The eagle who is being looked at now is Moe Allen-Oweibi,
01:00:53the backup left tackle.
01:00:56Long a red skin.
01:00:58Another of those players brought to Philadelphia by Ray Rhodes.
01:01:08Six seconds, 17-3.
01:01:11There's Moe Allen-Oweibi right up there.
01:01:15He's the left tackle, and he starts to block a stunt right there.
01:01:19You see what happened is he got his left leg up in the air,
01:01:23and then when he went to plant it, he got pushed,
01:01:27and that whole thing just collapsed.
01:01:28Watch as he's starting to get pushed there by Chad Hennings,
01:01:31and he gets it up in the air, and then as he puts it down,
01:01:35Chad Hennings just overpowers him and powers him right into the ground.
01:01:42Moe is still down.
01:01:57Don't forget, next Sunday on Fox, it's the NFC Championship game
01:02:01as the Green Bay Packers take on either the Dallas Cowboys or the Philadelphia Eagles.
01:02:07So don't miss the excitement as the playoff race concludes
01:02:11and the final showdown on the road to the Super Bowl.
01:02:14Check your local listings for the game and time in your area.
01:02:17If Dallas wins, Green Bay will come here.
01:02:22If Philadelphia wins, Green Bay will entertain.
01:02:27You can see they're bringing their card out there for Moe Allen-Oweibi.
01:02:36The Eagles are, at this point here, 54 yards.
01:02:40If they were to kick a field goal or try a field goal,
01:02:43it would be a 54-yard field goal for Gary Anderson.
01:02:47With five seconds left, it's a tough situation whether they can get another play
01:02:53and still have time to try the field goal.
01:02:56Fifty-four yards, if they don't move it, is a little long for him.
01:03:03He's very accurate.
01:03:05Right, and five seconds is a little short.
01:03:08You're kind of in the bind there,
01:03:11and it looks like they're not even going to try Gary Anderson here.
01:03:15You're not going to get both.
01:03:17You're not going to have time to, because they have no timeouts,
01:03:20it's going to be tough to complete a pass, get it out of bounds,
01:03:25and then get in there within five seconds.
01:03:30Gary Anderson is 0-3 this year during the regular season, over 50 yards.
01:03:39Chad Hennings is so strong, as we see Moe Allen-Oweibi going off the field,
01:03:44that was just one of those things where you're blocking a very strong man,
01:03:50like maybe the strongest man on this Dallas Cowboy team,
01:03:54and you're playing on artificial turf
01:03:57and you don't have your feet in the proper position.
01:04:02A lot of times you get caught where the only thing that can go is a joint.
01:04:17A little rough with Moe.
01:04:19Dropped him down on the stretcher.
01:04:21There's one of the real good trainers in this league.
01:04:26Let's go down to Pam Oliver and find out if we can what's going on with Rodney Peete.
01:04:30Well, Pat, we've been stationed outside of the locker room the whole time,
01:04:33and what I understand is that he's just been lying down the whole time.
01:04:36He still has his uniform on.
01:04:38Apparently that kick to the head did some damage.
01:04:41We're waiting for further word. Back to you.
01:04:44All right, Pam, thank you.
01:04:46As John Madden was just saying to me a minute ago,
01:04:48they probably, almost certainly now, nothing.
01:04:52We won't see Rodney Peete until the end of the half, if we do then.
01:04:55Well, you know, a lot of those things, when someone gets kicked in the head,
01:04:59or, you know, a head injury, you're going to take every precaution you can,
01:05:03and so you get them in there and just tell them to rest,
01:05:05and then you look it over and evaluate it at halftime,
01:05:09and see that Moe Elowanibi, that this is much more serious than a halftime evaluation.
01:05:15He's not going to be back.
01:05:18That is a Texas-sized chariot he's in.
01:05:22That's almost as big as your bus.
01:05:25Yeah.
01:05:27Don't forget again, coming up, the Dockers' halftime,
01:05:31J.B. Terry, Howie, Jimmy, scores and highlights, interview with Brett Favre.
01:05:36You know, I was listening yesterday to an interview with Steve Young.
01:05:40The 49ers deserve a lot of credit as well
01:05:43for being the class organization that they are,
01:05:46and the kind of people that play for that team and work for that team.
01:05:51They did a heck of a job, too, defending.
01:05:54I'm sure they don't think so today.
01:05:56No, and, you know, they lost that last game to Atlanta,
01:06:00and that's what gave the Dallas Cowboys the home field advantage throughout if they win today.
01:06:08Well, you think about the people they lost, Ricky Waters, who's here,
01:06:11and the starting fullback, William Floyd.
01:06:15How about the other guy who's here, Deion Sanders?
01:06:18They lost two pretty big guys that are here today.
01:06:21Second and ten.
01:06:23Cunningham, the quarterback, back to throw it.
01:06:27Going deep.
01:06:29Deion Sanders.
01:06:31And there is no flag.
01:06:35That's what they were hoping for, because you know that the end of the game
01:06:39or the half can't end on a penalty.
01:06:41There was no penalty, so the half was ended.
01:06:44Pass was intended for Calvin Williams.
01:06:46Pass was intended for Calvin Williams.
01:06:48Sanders is back there with him.
