00:00:00In Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Three Rivers, the Allegheny, and the Monongahela, they come
00:00:10together to form the Ohio.
00:00:13As you look now at downtown Pittsburgh, the Golden Triangle, and it's the site today of
00:00:18the Dallas Cowboys against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:00:23And a game that means so very much to both these football teams.
00:00:27I'm Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshire.
00:00:29What else do you have to say?
00:00:30This is a rematch of Super Bowl No. 10.
00:00:33And if either guy or anybody on the team didn't get taped up, it's their own fault.
00:00:36Both teams are very physical, Patrick, but the Steelers have had 21 fumbles and 17 interceptions,
00:00:41and that's a minus-13 takeaway type factor, and Dallas eats you up if you play that kind
00:00:46of football on a day like today.
00:00:48This is the first time they've met since that Super Bowl of two years ago.
00:00:51They played in preseason, and Dallas shut out the Steelers 30 to nothing.
00:00:55And it might have been preseason, but don't think that's not a memory.
00:00:57And one of Bradshaw's greatest games was in the Super Bowl, and Lin Swan was the MVP,
00:01:01and Lin Swan is the Lin Swan of two years ago.
00:01:03He's dynamite.
00:01:04So health is not really a factor.
00:01:05Both teams are in pretty good shape.
00:01:07There are some injuries we'll tell you about in just a minute.
00:01:11But our friend Herrera has got the ball teed up at the 35.
00:01:17Obviously, Pittsburgh has won the toss.
00:01:20And Jim Smith is No. 86, the rookie from Michigan, and back with him is No. 85, Ernie Pugh.
00:01:27Alvin Maxson also back there for the Steelers, and that's Ziprin Herrera.
00:01:30I'll tell you, he's a factor.
00:01:31He's hit 17 of 23 field goals, his last six in a row.
00:01:35And Pittsburgh, around here, they don't even let Jarella kick field goals.
00:01:38He hasn't kicked one in four games or tried one.
00:01:40Hasn't even tried one in four games, which is a...
00:01:44I don't know who keeps those records, but that's got to be one of the most amazing stats
00:01:47of all time.
00:01:48And here's Herrera.
00:01:50And the direction of Jim Smith from Michigan.
00:01:52At the 10, he takes it.
00:01:54And Smith has got some room on the outside and gets to the outside.
00:01:58He'll bat the 34 before he is stopped by one of those guys who always seems to be there.
00:02:04No. 31 for Dallas is Benny Barnes.
00:02:10The Steelers on offense and the Cowboys break on defense.
00:02:13That's the Pittsburgh backfield.
00:02:14Bradshaw's playing his sixth game with a fractured left wrist, and he's got a pretty good
00:02:18cast on it.
00:02:19But he's throwing the ball well, and all the interceptions to these receivers are not
00:02:23Bradshaw's fault, obviously.
00:02:24The Pittsburgh offensive line, Cole Davis, Webster Quack, and Larry Brown.
00:02:28They used to be a tight end.
00:02:29On first down now, the Steelers have the ball at their own 33, and Bradshaw
00:02:34gets to Harris, and Franco slams outside the 35.
00:02:38Stopped by Jethro Pugh, but Franco Harris picked up about four.
00:02:43Picked up where he left off, right?
00:02:45Can't remember when he hasn't had 1,000 yards rushing.
00:02:47This year, if Franco stays at, what, a 63-yard average, he'll break 1,000 yards for the
00:02:52sixth straight year, which is an incredible mark.
00:02:54Not too many folks have done that.
00:02:56He is fourth in the AFC in rushing at this point.
00:03:00He got fourth, and is second and sixth, and they're looking at a Dallas 4-3.
00:03:04We'll set the defense for you in just a second.
00:03:06This is Rocky Blyer, D.D. Lewis, and Bob Bruneck.
00:03:12Two of the Cowboy linebackers converge on him.
00:03:18This is the building that Art Rooney built here in Pittsburgh, and that defense, by the
00:03:22way, is Ed Jones, Jethro Pugh, Randy White, and Harvey Martin.
00:03:26Martin with 16 sacks, by the way.
00:03:28He's the right defensive end against Cobb, the big left tackle.
00:03:30That should be quite a battle on the line.
00:03:32Always has been.
00:03:33Rocky Blyer lost a yard, third and seven make it, and Bradshaw's first pass, perhaps, coming
00:03:39up right here.
00:03:40The Cowboys, remember, number 88, Lin Swan.
00:03:41This is not a pass.
00:03:42Of course, it's Franco Harris, and it's not a first down.
00:03:43Charlie Waters made the tackle.
00:03:44I don't know why we're so impressed with that fact, but at 225 pounds and 6'3", he really
00:03:58hits the hole quicker than most big men.
00:04:00Maybe Jimmy Brown's the only other one I can think of that size that hits it any faster.
00:04:04Number 77 for the Cowboys was Bill Gregory, who had come in on that third down situation,
00:04:11Bobby Walden, number 39, is the Pittsburgh kicker, and he's been there almost as long
00:04:16as Art Rooney.
00:04:17He's kicked 953 punts in this league.
00:04:22Butch Johnson deep in single safety for the Cowboys, and here is Walden's punt.
00:04:26Trying to get out of bounds, not a very good punt.
00:04:31Bounces to Butch.
00:04:32Butch gets away from one, gets out to about the 27-yard line before he's stopped by number
00:04:3766, Ted Peterson.
00:04:39And already some boos, and I'm assuming that's for Bobby Walden, the punter.
00:04:45The kickers these days have a right to be paranoid.
00:04:48Everybody is really analyzing them.
00:04:50Here's the offensive backfield, Roger Staubach having one of his greatest years, really,
00:04:54and he keeps adding those on, Dorsett in his first start.
00:04:57There are the receivers.
00:04:58Don't forget Billy Joe Dupree, the tight end, he's caught three TDs the last three games.
00:05:02And that's the offensive line, Neely, Lawless, Fitzgerald, Rafferty, and Donovan.
00:05:08Roger Staubach, the quarterback on first down to Tony Dorsett.
00:05:13Of course, as you would expect, a great local favorite here in Pittsburgh, Jack Hamm.
00:05:20Number 59, the linebacker who made the tackle.
00:05:23That's Roger Staubach.
00:05:25Defensively, facing Roger in this offense, Steve Furness is not left defensive end because
00:05:30Greenwood still has the knee problem.
00:05:32Joe Green, as always, in the middle.
00:05:34Ernie Holmes and Dwight White.
00:05:36Remember, Dwight White had a pretty good sacking day when they played in Super Bowl X a couple of years ago.
00:05:40I do remember.
00:05:42You saw that game here on CBS.
00:05:44It's not operating correctly.
00:05:46Until it's corrected, the line judge on the field will keep the time.
00:05:50Perhaps you heard that from Bob Frederick, who's the referee.
00:05:54The Pittsburgh defensive line, Tom Brookshire was just talking about.
00:05:57Furness, Green, Holmes, and White.
00:05:59The linebackers.
00:06:00And Dirk Winston, the young rookie from Arkansas at the middle spot in place of Lambert.
00:06:04He's going to be tested a lot.
00:06:06The secondary.
00:06:07Thomas, Blount, Allen, and Edwards.
00:06:10Put together because of the injury to Donny Schell.
00:06:13Dorsett and Newhouse, the running backs on 2nd and 8th.
00:06:17Staubach to Newhouse.
00:06:20Newhouse tried to cut back.
00:06:21A great play by number 59, Jack Hamm.
00:06:29Got a pretty good block on Furness at the defensive end, but
00:06:32the linebackers really covered for it.
00:06:34And Jack Hamm is that too small-sized linebacker.
00:06:37I guess if he came out right now, you might not draft him.
00:06:40But he comes from Penn State, which must mean something.
00:06:42Watch the good block on Furness.
00:06:43He goes down.
00:06:44Watch Hamm play off the block.
00:06:47Just gets enough to make the tackle, doesn't he?
00:06:52Weston Pearson and Dorsett are the running backs for Dallas now.
00:06:57Or the receivers for Dallas, if you'll make it.
00:06:59As the Cowboys go shotgun for the first time.
00:07:02Outside, Preston Pearson.
00:07:04And plenty enough for a Dallas first down,
00:07:08chased out of bounds by Lauren Tades, number 51.
00:07:12He does make it look easy.
00:07:14Now, don't ask me where Preston comes from.
00:07:16He's like the masked man that just comes riding through town.
00:07:18Watch him.
00:07:19He never looks like he's in a hurry.
00:07:20It's a straight drag-out pattern, which is an easy one for Roger to read.
00:07:24They handle, by the way, a Joe Green stunt coming up the middle
00:07:27in extremely good shape.
00:07:28Roger had a lot of time.
00:07:30And, of course, Preston Pearson at one time played with the Steelers.
00:07:33He was picked up as one of the great acquisitions of all time, I suppose,
00:07:37in pro football by the Dallas Cowboys.
00:07:39They got him for $100.
00:07:41He's paid him back.
00:07:43Here is Newhouse breaking a couple of tackles
00:07:45and making what looked like nothing into about a five-yard game
00:07:50before he was stopped by Tades and Blunt.
00:07:54Newhouse is so darn short, I don't believe Dwight White realized
00:07:57he had the ball carrier trapped.
00:07:59He came out of an armpit to make that.
00:08:01He's averaging four yards a shot.
00:08:05His numbers on his jersey are so long they go down in his pants,
00:08:09or he's so short, whatever the case might be.
00:08:11And, Pat, it's this shifting that the Dallas offense has always done
00:08:14up and down that might give the young middle linebacker
00:08:16a little bit of a recognition problem.
00:08:19So it is a second-down situation for the Cowboys
00:08:22as Newhouse shifts behind Saubach.
00:08:26Eleven yards to go for that first down,
00:08:28and a draw play as Gorseth.
00:08:29He did not get back to the line of scrimmage,
00:08:31and a flag is down as well.
00:08:34The old holding call, and it didn't pull Pittsburgh.
00:08:38Ernie Holmes really made a good play that time.
00:08:40Very strong inside.
00:08:41Oop, offside, Pittsburgh.
00:08:44Referee, as I mentioned a minute ago, is Bob Frederick,
00:08:47and he's the guy whose voice you'll hear in just a minute
00:08:49as he notifies us who committed the foul.
00:08:53The umpire is Lou Palazzi.
00:08:54Hope he doesn't call Joe Green's number out.
00:08:57He's mad about those guys in striped shirts.
00:09:01Here comes Bob Frederick.
00:09:03Defense, right tackle offside, second down.
00:09:08No number, just the right tackle.
00:09:11I'm not so sure it shouldn't be that way anyway.
00:09:12I don't like to identify the guys when they make a legitimate mistake
00:09:15trying to get a jump on the ball.
00:09:16I think we might do these players an injustice by
00:09:20knocking on their hooves.
00:09:21I don't know who the right tackle is.
00:09:22Pittsburgh defeated Tampa Bay 16-7.
00:09:26The Buccaneers now 24 losses in a row,
00:09:28and welcome to our broadcast here at Three River Stadium in Pittsburgh
00:09:32where the score is nothing, nothing.
00:09:33Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshire.
00:09:35Short set.
00:09:37Squirts through for a first down for the Dallas Cowboys.
00:09:40And that's where he is so valuable.
00:09:42Jim Allen made the tackle.
00:09:44I'll tell you, for a guy you think runs outside,
00:09:46he doesn't run that well outside.
00:09:48He runs inside, and he's tough and he's strong in the legs.
00:09:52He does all his moving inside the shoes.
00:09:54Very little extra work is needed.
00:09:56You know, that's a great misconception, I think, that many fans have.
00:09:59But a guy, just because he's fast and just because he's quick
00:10:03doesn't mean that he necessarily runs outside well.
00:10:05Philadelphia 16, St. Louis 14.
00:10:07That's his third quarter score.
00:10:09We'll keep you posted.
00:10:10First down, Dallas.
00:10:11The ball to Pittsburgh, 41.
00:10:17Staubach drops.
00:10:18Can't throw.
00:10:22Ernie Holmes and the rest of the Steel Curtains
00:10:26converge on Roger Staubach.
00:10:28All right, that's the 21st sack.
00:10:30Now watch Joe Green, number 75.
00:10:32He actually goes beyond the line of getting Roger Staubach.
00:10:36Now watch him.
00:10:37Rafferty, the young guard, is holding and everything.
00:10:39Joe Green is the one that forces Roger back up inside,
00:10:41and there's the locomotive.
00:10:44Another view of that.
00:10:46Watch this now.
00:10:47Watch number 75 take the young guard, who weighs about 252,
00:10:50and just shove him right on back through the pile.
00:10:54A hell of a player, I'll tell you that.
00:10:57On second down now, and 17 yards to go.
00:11:00Staubach gets to Dorsett.
00:11:02And Tony picks up about 10.
00:11:10Tony Dungy made the tackle on Dorsett.
00:11:14He got back past the original line of scrimmage.
00:11:16It'll be third and nine.
00:11:19Remember, they're doing this without Jack Lambert,
00:11:21and he's the holler guy that makes sure everybody's up on every play,
00:11:24and right now Joe Green's having to assume that.
00:11:27The guy in the middle who's taking Lambert's place is number 53,
00:11:30the rookie from Arkansas, Dirt Winston.
00:11:36And he likes the nickname Dirt Winston, too.
00:11:39Here he comes over to the sideline as you look at the rivers
00:11:42outside this stadium.
00:11:45Super location in the first quarter.
00:11:47You're looking at the NFL on CBS.
00:11:50Nothing, nothing between the Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:11:54A rematch of the Super Bowl of two years ago in Miami when the Steelers won.
00:12:05Downtown Pittsburgh has undergone a great renovation in recent years,
00:12:09and Chuck Knoll in recent years has done a great renovation job
00:12:12on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:12:14Newest buildings and most established ones in the new Pittsburgh, right?
00:12:18Joe Green, number 75, of course.
00:12:21Number 78 is Dwight White.
00:12:23Patrick, it was always a city where if you didn't want to come in
00:12:25and buckle on a helmet, don't come to play football.
00:12:27It's always been a work ethic football team, tough.
00:12:30I remember when we used to come here and play,
00:12:32and played at old Forbes Field,
00:12:36and you wore your helmets at all times.
00:12:40But a great place to play.
00:12:44And, of course, Art Rooney and Dan Rooney and the Rooney family
00:12:47have done a remarkable job in this city as well as with this football team.
00:12:54They are as much of an institution as the NFL itself.
00:13:05Third, and we'll make it eight, for the Dallas Cowboys, first quarter.
00:13:10And for you stat freaks, Tony Dorsett in three carries has 20 yards.
00:13:13It looks like he might be on the motorbike today.
00:13:18Tony Dorsett and Preston Pearson, both in the backfield.
00:13:21Now, as Roger Starbuck goes back in that familiar shotgun formation for Dallas.
00:13:27Dorsett stays in the block.
00:13:29Starbuck throws to the outside.
00:13:30It's going to go to Mitchell.
00:13:32Broken up by Kenny Allen.
00:13:35Number 45, normally a cornerback, now playing safety.
00:13:38Watch him work.
00:13:39Boy, he has good speed.
00:13:40He has four-four speed for the 40.
00:13:42And watch the recovery he makes.
00:13:43Roger does not throw this ball extremely well.
00:13:46He sort of had to throw it over for an S's rush.
00:13:48And the ball was a little bit end-over-end.
00:13:50You could almost read Roselle's name on the side of it.
00:13:54That, of course, the commissioner who signs every football.
00:13:59Danny White is number 11 with his back to you now on fourth and eight.
00:14:02The Cowboys have to punt.
00:14:04White standing in his own 45.
00:14:06They try to block it.
00:14:07They don't get it.
00:14:08White trying to go out of bounds.
00:14:09Jim Smith back there.
00:14:11And White did a pretty good job.
00:14:15Coming out outside the 10 to mark it down at the 13-yard line
00:14:19where the Steelers will take over.
00:14:21This telecast is presented by authority of the National Football League.
00:14:25It's intended for the private use of our audience.
00:14:27Any rebroadcast or other use of this telecast
00:14:29without the express written consent of the Pittsburgh Steelers
00:14:32and the National Football League is prohibited.
00:14:36Good pass rush by Pittsburgh.
00:14:37Got the ball back for the offense, right?
00:14:41Once upon a Brothers Graham.
00:14:43Wednesday at 8 p.m. Central and Mountain Time here on CBS.
00:14:47And right now on CBS, the Steelers go into action
00:14:51against the Cowboys defensive unit.
00:14:53Rocky Blier.
00:14:55Wrapped up, I believe, by Randy White.
00:15:00From behind Bradshaw, look again.
00:15:02All right.
00:15:03Bradshaw may not want to put it up early
00:15:05but he does have one of the turnovers that have been so darn costly this year.
00:15:08Gets pretty good blocking inside
00:15:10but White comes over the top of a good block
00:15:12and gets help from Harvey Martin and company.
00:15:14And look at Waters up on the line of scrimmage.
00:15:16There he is, number 41.
00:15:17He cannot stay there on every play.
00:15:19He's got to do some guessing.
00:15:20For 75 on Dallas defense's jet-throw feud.
00:15:24Two-yard pick-up, 2nd and 8 for Bradshaw.
00:15:27Franco Harris and Rocky Blier, the running backs.
00:15:30Franco outside the 20.
00:15:34Franco Harris made the tackle.
00:15:36Franco was coming downhill as soon as he took the handoff.
00:15:39An extremely low, hard-running target.
00:15:43Brunig, of course, has sort of been nicked with injuries.
00:15:46The middle linebacker playing for Dallas.
00:15:48Remember, the Cleveland secondary tried to come up and support the defensive run
00:15:53and Bradshaw threw Cleveland silly.
00:15:56Those 49ers have won four in a row, shooting for five.
00:15:59And they lead the Rams now 3-0.
00:16:01First quarter score on the West Coast.
00:16:04Third down here in two.
00:16:06Bradshaw to Harris.
00:16:07Won't get it.
00:16:12A flag down on the far side of the field, Patrick.
00:16:14It's something on that line of scrimmage.
00:16:18Harvey Martin made the tackle.
00:16:21The reaction of the crowd would tell you and tell us
00:16:24that the violation is against Dallas.
00:16:28And so they're even on offsides, 1 and 1.
00:16:30Here's Harvey Martin.
00:16:3116 sacks for a guy that has the beautiful Harvey Martin radio program.
00:16:36That's hard to believe that he could just work a microphone sweet and easy, but he does.
00:16:40Defense.
00:16:41Offside number 41.
00:16:43First down.
00:16:44Charlie Waters is number 41, your safety man offside.
00:16:49Just your average safety man's offside, right?
00:16:53Don't hear that one too much.
00:16:57So it's a Steeler first down, and Bradshaw being chased by Brunig.
00:17:01And still being chased.
00:17:02Fires up in the air, and it's knocked out of bounds in front of a Steeler bench.
00:17:06Stallworth was there, so was Benny Cunningham.
00:17:11I think you said the magic words.
00:17:12Here's the pass rush.
00:17:14Martin stays outside.
00:17:15They had a stunt going anyway, so he had the outside angle.
00:17:18Bradshaw shouldn't have thrown it.
00:17:19Now watch Cunningham, the big tight end, keep this from being intercepted.
00:17:23Down the field, that is.
00:17:24Watch this now.
00:17:26He's 250 pounds of real meat on the hook.
00:17:29Now watch this tight end.
00:17:30He'll just go through and destroy the secondary that almost makes the interception.
00:17:34Throw it.
00:17:35Okay, Terry.
00:17:37He collapsed everybody right into the Steeler bench.
00:17:39Cunningham is a brute.
00:17:42Second and 10 situation for Bradshaw and the Steelers now.
00:17:46Cowboys still line up in their regular 4-3.
00:17:50No extra backs.
00:17:51No extra linebackers.
00:17:52Flag goes down.
00:17:53Blyer gets the carry.
00:17:55Randy White is the first guy to hit it.
00:17:59I wonder if you can over-stunt a little bit against this kind of a rushing game
00:18:03with Blyer and Franco both such good inside runners.
00:18:06If you over-stunt, you can make your defensive linemen give a lot of their ability up there,
00:18:10that balance system.
00:18:12Maybe that's going to happen.
00:18:14Again, I believe the violation is against Dallas.
00:18:18And there he goes.
00:18:21Bob Frederick.
00:18:23Offside defense.
00:18:24Offside number 72.
00:18:26Second down.
00:18:28Too tall Jones is the guy who's offside.
00:18:31He is so big he's offside when he comes into the stadium.
00:18:34All he has to do is put his hand down and he's got a yard on you.
00:18:386'9".
00:18:40265.
00:18:42Second and 5.
00:18:46Line of scrimmage is to Pittsburgh, 32.
00:18:48No scores yet.
00:18:52Franco Harris.
00:18:56Outside the 35 to perhaps the 36, stopped by Cliff Harris.
00:19:00Good block by Jim Clack, number 50.
00:19:03He turned outside on Harvey Martin and pretty good hole.
00:19:06Again, if you stunt a lot, watch to the right of your screen.
00:19:08Now watch number 50.
00:19:10Come over and keep Harvey Martin completely turned off the play.
00:19:13And Harvey was not down low enough to protect the inside.
00:19:22Seven minutes exactly left to play in quarter number one at Three Rivers Stadium.
00:19:28Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshire.
00:19:30Nothing, nothing score as Rocky Blier tries for the first down and is close.
00:19:35Harvey Martin stacked it up.
00:19:37We might have to measure this one.
00:19:40Didn't get much.
00:19:42Franco has 20 yards now.
00:19:46Franco is now the 13th leading career rusher of all time in this league.
00:19:51He just passed one of the toughest there ever was, Bill Brown of the Minnesota Vikings.
00:19:56Here's that play again.
00:19:58Short yardage and again nothing fancy about Pittsburgh football.
00:20:02Poor Dallas defense.
00:20:03Watch Rocky stick it in there.
00:20:06He's trying for it on second effort and might have had the whistle called in between.
00:20:10He came out here on those two plays.
00:20:12First down, Steelers nevertheless.
00:20:14Terry Bradshaw the quarterback.
00:20:16Dallas flexes that defense.
00:20:21Franco Harris flexes straight ahead.
00:20:23And boy, he got nothing.
00:20:25Jethro Pugh made some strong play led by the whole rest of that left side,
00:20:31including two tall Jones.
00:20:36The Baltimore Colts and the Jets, 26 to 6 in the third quarter at Shea Stadium.
00:20:45Bradshaw wanting to be very careful.
00:20:47Again, Harris and Waters are both on the line of scrimmage a lot,
00:20:50but when you want to throw it, somehow they're back in those deep post zones
00:20:54where Lin Swan and Stahl would like to run.
00:20:57He's got to be careful.
00:21:04Bradshaw dropped.
00:21:05Here they come.
00:21:06Screen pass knocked away by Harvey Martin.
00:21:10I said they were at Shea Stadium.
00:21:12They are in Baltimore.
00:21:13I'm sorry.
00:21:16I don't know if Harvey realized he could have caught that or not.
00:21:18He swatted it like a big bear trying to get a trout out of that stream.
00:21:22Watch this.
00:21:23It's a quick screen left, and Harvey Martin, they got a safety blitz.
00:21:28As Randy Hughes, it almost got to him.
00:21:30Harvey just swatted.
00:21:36And so it will be a third down situation, nine to go,
00:21:405'39 left to play in the first quarter.
00:21:42No scores yet.
00:21:45The Steelers and the Cowboys.
00:21:47Dallas drops back.
00:21:48No blitz this time.
00:21:51Bradshaw goes deep for Swan.
00:21:53Benny Barnes back there with him.
00:21:55Good coverage.
00:21:56Oh, that looked like the Super Bowl again.
00:21:59I'll tell you, Barnes made an incredibly good play.
00:22:01The ball was thrown about as well as you can throw it.
00:22:04The only trouble was that the defender's arm got in between.
00:22:07Look at this pass blocking.
00:22:08I mean to tell you, a blue and white shirt doesn't get close,
00:22:11and nobody can flat throw it any better than the man you're seeing right now,
00:22:14number 12.
00:22:15Look at this.
00:22:16It's right on, and then it's off.
00:22:18Dynamite play.
00:22:20The other Dallas defender is Cliff Harris back there with him.
00:22:25A little help from the free safety man is a lot of help.
00:22:29Bobby Walden has Butch Johnson at the 30-yard line.
00:22:32Signals for a fair catch.
00:22:34Dallas tried to block the punt, didn't get it, obviously.
00:22:37It'll be a Cowboy first down at their own 30.
00:22:39No score, 5'25 left to play first quarter.
00:22:44It started to rain a little bit earlier in Pittsburgh,
00:22:47but that has gone away now.
00:22:50And the weather is cool but good.
00:22:56I wonder if the pressure Dallas tried to put on Walden
00:22:59won't pay off before the game is over.
00:23:02It was not a good punt, and even though they don't get there,
00:23:04it's like the almost sack that a defensive team can get.
00:23:08It might be a plus factor later on.
00:23:11It's one thing to stand back there and kick it with nobody coming.
00:23:14It's something else when there are a lot of rushers
00:23:17and they start to make you hurry.
00:23:19Walden has punted twice.
00:23:21Neither one has been a very good effort.
00:23:3033-yarder and a 31-yarder.
00:23:33And the field position for Landry's Cowboys has been not the greatest,
00:23:37but not shabby either.
00:23:39Talk about favorites.
00:23:40That guy walking in front of Landry just a minute ago is a great favorite
00:23:43and should be here in Pittsburgh.
00:23:45Here's Tom Stotner.
00:23:56It's a new disguise on Tom Landry.
00:23:58It's the first time I've seen him in the wet golf gear.
00:24:03Where's his Tyrolean hat?
00:24:05You had it.
00:24:09It's a first down Dallas at their own 31.
00:24:12And on first down,
00:24:13the ball goes back to throw and throws to Dorsett.
00:24:16About four, J.T. Thomas, the tackler.
00:24:20There is Tony Dorsett.
00:24:23Comes from nearby Aliquippa, Pennsylvania.
00:24:27Hoped well high over there.
00:24:28The main thing is that he didn't catch the ball much playing for majors
00:24:31in Pittsburgh.
00:24:32He just caught his 17th pass.
00:24:34Wait till he learns the pass route.
00:24:35It's going to be a little bit nasty to cover.
00:24:37Atlanta 20-14 over New Orleans,
00:24:39and you talk about the good jobs that are being done around the league.
00:24:42Lehman Bennett has done one of them at Atlanta.
00:24:44And Shulett Miami's done another.
00:24:47Roger Staubach is another guy who's done one of those good jobs.
00:24:52They make it second and six for Dallas.
00:24:55And again, Roger's going to throw.
00:24:57Outside's Steve Newhouse.
00:24:59And Newhouse ducks under one.
00:25:02Lauren Caves was the first guy to get him.
00:25:04And then Dwight White came over to make sure.
00:25:07And you know, Caves' biggest problem has been replacing Andy Russell,
00:25:10and you can't replace a great all-pro like Andy.
00:25:12And Caves has just played super.
00:25:14Makes one of those plays that time that I imagine everybody thought,
00:25:18by golly, Andy Russell's gone, but we've got a good player in there.
00:25:22And Lauren Caves is number 51.
00:25:24Look at that group.
00:25:26Ernie Holmes, Dwight White, Joe Green, Steve Burnett.
00:25:33Dorsett and Pearson both in the same backfield.
00:25:36It's third and 12 now.
00:25:39Staubach lined up shotgun.
00:25:46Has to go down.
00:25:49Joe Green, Dwight White, Steve Burnett, Ernie Holmes.
00:25:57I believe it was Burnett coming to the inside on the stunt that breaks through.
00:26:01Watch the right part of your screen and see what number flashes.
00:26:04There's Fitzgerald getting back.
00:26:05Rafferty's having some trouble with Green.
00:26:07Here comes 64 down the slot.
00:26:09And by the way, it was a very shallow shotgun.
00:26:12I don't believe Roger was more than four and a half or five yards
00:26:14behind the center of Fitzgerald.
00:26:17So Danny White goes back to punt formation.
00:26:20That is Jim Smith.
00:26:23He hasn't fair caught a punt all year here in Pittsburgh.
00:26:26A speedy rookie who watched his alumni defeat Ohio State yesterday.
00:26:32A snap on a bounce, but White feels it nevertheless.
00:26:35Jim Smith at his own 39 speeds to the sideline.
00:26:40Out of bounds he goes in front of the Dallas Bench.
00:26:45Guy Brown is the guy who knocked him out of bounds.
00:26:52So Pittsburgh on offense, Dallas goes to defense.
00:26:55Got a slight discussion.
00:27:04This indication is holding against the Steelers.
00:27:08That's been another bugaboo that Knolls had to put up with.
00:27:11They have committed the penalties at precisely the wrong time
00:27:14and against the wrong people like Houston, Denver, and Baltimore.
00:27:18Their record is 5-4.
00:27:20Dallas is 8-1.
00:27:22Let's see who did it.
00:27:26Holding on the punt return, number 45.
00:27:33That's Jim Allen.
00:27:35As you look down at the Steeler bench,
00:27:37and look at the guy who has turned the whole thing around here, Chuck Knolls.
00:27:47Chuck Knolls' first year here was dismal to say the best.
00:27:51One and 13 if I recall, wasn't it?
00:27:53And he turned it around,
00:27:54and they've happened to have made a couple of Super Bowl trips
00:27:56and not done badly, I'll tell you.
00:27:59They have defeated Dallas, and they have defeated Minnesota.
00:28:03Minnesota, they did in convincingly.
00:28:05Dallas was a great football game.
00:28:08Not much finesse, just a lot of good football.
00:28:12Joe Green, number 75, who goes about 270 or 275 to go with his number.
00:28:22A first-round draft choice of years ago,
00:28:25who has turned out to be one of the magnificent ones.
00:28:29He said last week after the narrow win over Cleveland
00:28:32that it's not time to talk.
00:28:34It's time to just execute and play football again.
00:28:37It looks like they're doing it so far.
00:28:39It is nothing-nothing in Pittsburgh at Three Rivers Stadium
00:28:42with three minutes and 12 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
00:28:56Steeler first and 10 at their own 33.
00:28:58No score.
00:28:59Pat Summer all the time, Brookshire.
00:29:02In Pittsburgh, the Cowboys and the Steelers.
00:29:06Again, the flex from Dallas.
00:29:09And a handoff to Franco Harris and Randy White.
00:29:14When he goes into that position, he is so quick.
00:29:17The cutoff block is impossible.
00:29:19And, Patrick, that is a play from the 50s when they open up a back
00:29:22and that defensive tackle will see Flyer open up
00:29:25and just take the outside a little bit, and that's the guy they kick out.
00:29:29You know, Pittsburgh has only scored two touchdowns all year in the first quarter.
00:29:34And they're a good team.
00:29:35You wonder why they don't get on the board earlier, don't you?
00:29:38Got a lot of good players.
00:29:39Four-yard pickup.
00:29:42Backed off.
00:29:43It's just time to Franco Harris.
00:29:44He's got to get around the outside.
00:29:46Loses the football.
00:29:47Dallas has it.
00:29:49Thomas Henderson.
00:29:51Hollywood gives the ball to the Cowboys.
00:29:55Who made the contact?
00:29:56Brunig that forced this.
00:29:57Watch number 53 and let's see.
00:29:59Fumble number 22 lost.
00:30:0122 fumbles.
00:30:03And I'll tell you, that might be one of the most destructive things
00:30:05that can happen to an offense.
00:30:06Here it is.
00:30:07Cliff Harris makes the tackle and puts the helmet right into the football.
00:30:10That's what knocked it loose.
00:30:13Harvey Martin trying to find a handle, but Henderson does.
00:30:16And Dallas has it, first and ten at the Pittsburgh 37.
00:30:21No score with two minutes and 31 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
00:30:26Dorsett goes behind Newhouse.
00:30:30The fake is to Dorsett.
00:30:32The throw is by Staubach.
00:30:34It's Billy Joe Dupree wide open.
00:30:36Dallas first down inside the 25.
00:30:39Jack Hamm got him out of bounds.
00:30:41Good read by Roger Staubach.
00:30:43A lot of people have always said he's not the best reading quarterback.
00:30:45He wanted Drew Pearson coming across.
00:30:48He went to his secondary receiver who was really wide open.
00:30:51There was a discussion, as Bob Frederick indicated just a second ago,
00:30:56that the Steelers were offside.
00:30:59And, of course, Dallas will decline.
00:31:04I hope they decline to give us the number.
00:31:07But I don't want to repeat it.
00:31:10Defense, number 64 offside.
00:31:13Refused.
00:31:15First down.
00:31:17Number 64 offside.
00:31:19Refused.
00:31:20First down.
00:31:22Here's the play from the end zone.
00:31:24Watch Roger now.
00:31:25Come back with the flow of the eye going this way.
00:31:28Now they cut off and make sure that Dorsett doesn't.
00:31:30He looks for Drew Pearson.
00:31:31Now quickly back to the right side, and everybody's looked off.
00:31:34Dupree's wide open.
00:31:39It's the first down.
00:31:40Dallas at the Steelers 24.
00:31:43Now about Gibbs to Tony Dorsett.
00:31:45He swings to the outside.
00:31:47Gets away from one or two.
00:31:48Boy, he's quick.
00:31:50Incredible.
00:31:52He had no chance.
00:31:53Furnace had him cut off before he ever took the handoff,
00:31:56and he did a little dip.
00:31:58He must have legs that are as long as Wilk Chamberlain's.
00:32:01I've never seen such a stride when Dorsett gets it underway.
00:32:04Ernie Holmes finally made the tackle,
00:32:06but Dorsett turned disaster into a six-yard gain, second and four.
00:32:16A minute 50 left to play in the first quarter.
00:32:18No scorers yet.
00:32:19Roger Staubach calls him.
00:32:28Newhouse to about the 15.
00:32:31Furnace, the first guy to hit him, number 64.
00:32:35Remember, Lambert is averaging 10 solo,
00:32:37unassisted tackles a game at the middle linebacking spot.
00:32:40The wild man, the big guy that's a turn-on fella.
00:32:42He's got the bad stretch ligaments of the knee,
00:32:45and he's missing his third game.
00:32:47That time I watched Dirk Winston, and Winston plugged it off in good shape.
00:32:51This bunch will try to take care of their young middle linebacker,
00:32:53but that's not easy.
00:32:55He is number 53, Dennis Winston, also known as Dirk from Arkansas.
00:33:03Third down situation now, about one.
00:33:07Dorsett and Newhouse.
00:33:10Dorsett gets the call, and Dorsett gets inside the 15.
00:33:13He might have a first down, and he might not.
00:33:15Safety man Jim Allen made the first contact, number 45.
00:33:20With about three tackles shoulder to shoulder on that one,
00:33:22Dorsett didn't get much movement.
00:33:27If it's fourth, it looks like the Cowboys might go.
00:33:33Remember, our friend Herrera has six straight field goals.
00:33:36Here come the sticks.
00:33:39What would you go for?
00:33:40Would you take three against this defense,
00:33:41or would you try to break it and get that first touch?
00:33:43I'd take the three.
00:33:45You're a kicker.
00:33:48So is Herrera.
00:33:50And a good one.
00:33:51You better believe it.
00:33:54Regardless of our opinion,
00:33:57Tom Landry's going to go for the first down.
00:34:00There's a little bit of a debate going on.
00:34:02Now the decision is made.
00:34:07Out goes Butch Johnson.
00:34:11Denver and Kansas City in the fourth quarter tied 7-7.
00:34:15That's sort of a shocker.
00:34:17Preston Pearson is in there with Dorsett.
00:34:20And Newhouse.
00:34:24Three backs, fourth and one.
00:34:26Dorsett is the deep one.
00:34:29About a foot, Dorsett hurdles over the top,
00:34:32and I think he got it.
00:34:35And I guarantee you his body did not come down on ground.
00:34:38He is on a pyramid of players.
00:34:40Looks like something from a jambalaya somewhere.
00:34:44Watch this, Patrick.
00:34:46His body will never touch the rug out there,
00:34:49up and over,
00:34:50what must be called an old short punt formation.
00:34:54That looks like Bourbon Street Super Bowl week.
00:34:56Well done.
00:35:05Steelers are asking Bob Frederick again to measure.
00:35:11He's looking over.
00:35:12I think if Joe Green came up and asked me,
00:35:14I'd get the chains out there.
00:35:16Whatever he said.
00:35:17They're bringing out the chains.
00:35:18And they'll be darn careful.
00:35:30Watch it again.
00:35:31Okay.
00:35:34Belly to belly and back to back.
00:35:36And my friends, that's football.
00:35:40That's known as the Three Rivers Stack.
00:35:44First down for Dallas.
00:35:47A ball of the Pittsburgh 13.
00:35:50No scores yet.
00:35:5113 seconds left to play in the first quarter.
00:35:54Probably the last play coming up right now.
00:35:56Gorseth is going to score.
00:35:59And does.
00:36:00Is he quick?
00:36:02Is he something?
00:36:03And you know something?
00:36:04He knew he had it when he crossed the ten-yard line.
00:36:06He started to spike on the five.
00:36:07But, you know, he's not a spiker.
00:36:09And a very unassuming man.
00:36:10How he handles all that he's been given at such a young age,
00:36:13I don't know, but he's classic.
00:36:16They started with a trip formation left and then shifted back.
00:36:21Watch Lawless coming across.
00:36:22A super trap on Furness.
00:36:24It's over.
00:36:25Watch him start to tell you.
00:36:26He knows it now.
00:36:28Boy, that makes life easy for an offensive guard.
00:36:30All you have to do is stand up in front of the guy.
00:36:32And he's so quick, he's fast.
00:36:33Just get a piece, huh?
00:36:34Right.
00:36:36Ben Herrera has it knocked away.
00:36:40Six-nothing, Dallas.
00:36:42Herrera had missed only one extra point all year.
00:36:45So, that's number two.
00:36:47Watch it.
00:36:48Let's see where it comes from.
00:36:54Oh, my gosh.
00:36:55It's from behind.
00:36:56It was Dennis Dirt Winston, the middle linebacker.
00:36:58And he went up over the stack to get the block.
00:37:01He's only 6'2".
00:37:05I think he could stuff it, though.
00:37:07Look at him jump.
00:37:08Watch number 53.
00:37:09Here's the touchdown.
00:37:10Here's the touchdown.
00:37:11Look at this.
00:37:12It's just a weave in.
00:37:13Take the good trap block on Furness.
00:37:16Jack Hamm couldn't even handle it.
00:37:18And he's tackled all of them.
00:37:23Tony Dorsett.
00:37:25The Dallas touchdown.
00:37:27CBS Sports Spectacular has the Los Angeles Times 500 next Saturday at 430 p.m.
00:37:33Eastern Time.
00:37:35It also has the countdown to the Super Bowl
00:37:37and the world's strongest men competition.
00:37:40And next week, it's the girl lift.
00:37:44The girl lift?
00:37:45Right.
00:37:46It's not the only competition.
00:37:47I might have had a chance at it.
00:37:49Dorsett.
00:37:51The touchdown for Dallas.
00:37:52This is Jim Smith.
00:37:54He finds a win and stays on his feet.
00:37:56And Jim Smith gets out to about the 39.
00:38:00He lost the football, but the Steelers got it back.
00:38:04From the end zone, look again.
00:38:06I'll tell you, Dallas covers these kickoffs.
00:38:08First, they get good height by Herrera.
00:38:10They've allowed only 21 yards average.
00:38:12But this young man from Michigan can play.
00:38:15We told you on punts, he doesn't fair catch.
00:38:18And on kickoffs, he's always thinking about going the distance.
00:38:21Herrera made the tackle.
00:38:29Five.
00:38:30Five on the 50-yard line.
00:38:33Hey, Charlie, it was cold last night.
00:38:34You put on the Prestone antifreeze?
00:38:35Prestone, Prestone.
00:38:36Who needs Prestone?
00:38:40Prestone, Prestone.
00:38:42You need Prestone.
00:38:43If your antifreeze is worn out or you don't have enough, you could be in trouble.
00:38:47So put on a fresh fill of Prestone, too, to prevent corrosion and freeze-ups.
00:38:51Prestone, Prestone.
00:38:53We need Prestone.
00:38:54Prestone, Prestone.
00:38:56You need Prestone.
00:38:58Introducing the Ford in your future.
00:39:00The new Ford Fairmont.
00:39:02A new car designed for today and the years ahead.
00:39:05Fairmont's mileage ratings are the same as a little VW Rabbit when both are equipped with automatic transmission.
00:39:11And this Fairmont, as shown, is actually sticker-priced less than this Rabbit.
00:39:15Yet Fairmont has 90% of the head, leg, and shoulder room of most large cars.
00:39:19Fairmont.
00:39:20Roomy, but with mileage like a small car.
00:39:22And the lowest sticker price in its class.
00:39:24Test drive Fairmont.
00:39:26The newest, better idea from Ford.
00:39:34A Dallas scoring drive.
00:39:35You saw the stats.
00:39:37Pittsburgh has it first again.
00:39:39The Cowboys lead 6-0.
00:39:42Frank O'Hara sprints into the secondary.
00:39:44Frank O'Hara is gone.
00:39:46A 61-yard touchdown run by Frank O'Hara.
00:39:58There he is.
00:40:00From Rancocos Valley High School to Penn State.
00:40:03His longest run was 40 yards so far.
00:40:06And I'll tell you, he cuts it off in a hurry.
00:40:10Here it is again.
00:40:11Watch the body control.
00:40:12And let's see who gets a good block on the outside.
00:40:15Because he's cut off at the pass.
00:40:17You can see Bruni coming over.
00:40:19Good block inside.
00:40:20And I'll tell you right now, it's a race.
00:40:22And very few people have run through that secondary.
00:40:24And Franco does it.
00:40:26He's not a Tony Dorsett, but he's bigger.
00:40:30Franco Harris, number 32.
00:40:33And Roy Jarello.
00:40:35With bodyguard and holding, puts Pittsburgh ahead.
00:40:40Franco has 90 yards on 8 carries.
00:40:43And we've got some kind of a duel going on.
00:40:45Above average, I'd say.
00:40:52When do you say Budweiser?
00:40:56After doing this about 3,000 times a day.
00:40:58After a hard two-smash with my friend Ron.
00:41:00Soon as I knock this ball out of the park.
00:41:02When do you say Budweiser?
00:41:06Everywhere.
00:41:07When my mother-in-law leaves town.
00:41:09After a long night in here.
00:41:11When you say Budweiser.
00:41:14Let me hear you say it, people.
00:41:16Budweiser.
00:41:17You have said it all.
00:41:23Here's a few tips on how to get out of an airport fast.
00:41:26One, join the number one club and reserve a car with Hertz.
00:41:29Two, have your license and credit card ready.
00:41:32Because Hertz will be ready for you.
00:41:34Just sign and go.
00:41:36Three, need directions? Ask Hertz.
00:41:38We know the shortest route.
00:41:39Nobody can get you out of an airport faster.
00:41:41Nobody can get you out of an airport faster.
00:41:44Go, dudes! Go!
00:41:46Rent a Ford from Hertz.
00:41:47A superstar in rent-a-car.
00:41:49Ride.
00:41:52Oh, another all-nighter for the old workaholic, huh?
00:41:56Somebody's got to get the workout.
00:41:57Many people drive themselves too hard.
00:41:59And it's putting the cost of health care under a lot of stress.
00:42:02Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans have programs to hold costs down.
00:42:06But everybody needs to help.
00:42:08I hear you're working on a transfer.
00:42:09Huh?
00:42:10Yeah.
00:42:11To that big office in the sky.
00:42:14When you overtax yourself, we all pay for it.
00:42:25The story of the Pittsburgh score.
00:42:27A heck of a run by Franco Harris.
00:42:29A long drive, huh?
00:42:31One play.
00:42:33Jarella.
00:42:35Kicks off into the end zone to Butts Johnson.
00:42:39And he stays in that end zone.
00:42:44Franco Harris.
00:42:45And watch the block by the center, Webster.
00:42:48Now, Mike Webster's 52 there.
00:42:50He takes Bruni to linebacker.
00:42:52He's overrun it just a little bit.
00:42:53Flyers on the outside.
00:42:54Dede Lewis gets one shot there.
00:42:57Remember, this happens in a hurry.
00:42:59If it's holding, it's too late, baby.
00:43:01The replay is done.
00:43:03So is 61 yards.
00:43:05Done.
00:43:06And done well by Franco Harris and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:43:10They lead 7-6 with 14-44 left to play before the half.
00:43:15The longest touchdown run by Franco Harris since 1972.
00:43:21The Steelers up by one.
00:43:23Here's Dorsett.
00:43:25Dorsett squirms around and gets to a three.
00:43:27Lauren Tades, number 51, made the tackle.
00:43:32Franco has 26 100-yard days already.
00:43:36And he is...
00:43:38So now he has 27.
00:43:40I hate to make it an obit because he's still alive and very well.
00:43:45There are only three other guys who've had more 100-yard days than that.
00:43:48Leroy Kelly, Jim Brown, and O.J. Simpson.
00:43:51O.J. Simpson.
00:43:52So that's classic company.
00:43:54Aaron Kyle was hurt earlier by a head injury.
00:43:59And he is out.
00:44:00We don't know if he'll be back or not.
00:44:02Drew Pearson couldn't hold on.
00:44:04And Dennis Winston popped Drew pretty good.
00:44:08Wow.
00:44:09Winston has certainly learned what Jack Lambert learned in a hurry too.
00:44:15Watch 53 to the right of your screen now.
00:44:17Just follow him.
00:44:18Roger gets a pretty good late rush right there from Holmes.
00:44:21Ball is again thrown sort of heavy.
00:44:23Pearson has to go up and get it.
00:44:24He usually makes the inside catch.
00:44:26And I'll tell you, Winston made sure.
00:44:28And Drew may be hurt.
00:44:29I'll tell you, they're having to stand over him now.
00:44:32You rarely see that.
00:44:35Drew Pearson is some tough wide receiver.
00:44:38But right now he is down and they're looking at him.
00:44:417'6", Steeler.
00:44:49What time you go to sleep is your business.
00:44:52What time you wake up is Panasonic's.
00:44:54Panasonic introduces its electronic clock radios.
00:44:57A gentle chirp.
00:44:59Silent, easy to read numbers.
00:45:01A doze button.
00:45:03And of course, beautiful AM and FM.
00:45:05What time you wake up is my business.
00:45:09Ours too.
00:45:11Panasonic electronic clock radios and digital clock radios.
00:45:15Introducing a new 1978 Ford Granada, the ESS.
00:45:19Can you tell it from this impressive $20,000 Mercedes 280 SE?
00:45:23Granada.
00:45:25Mercedes.
00:45:27Granada.
00:45:28Mercedes.
00:45:29Granada.
00:45:30Mercedes.
00:45:32The new Ford Granada ESS.
00:45:34See how close you can come to the look of a $20,000 Mercedes at the price of a Granada.
00:45:41When America needs a better idea, Ford puts it on wheels.
00:45:48Dallas 3rd and 6th at their own 24.
00:45:51Pittsburgh leads 7-6.
00:45:53Just over 14 minutes left to play before the half.
00:45:55And Drew Pearson walked off under his own scheme, but he was hit.
00:46:00In motion is Preston Pearson.
00:46:02Flips his arm.
00:46:04Starbuck fires behind Jay Salvey.
00:46:08Jimmy Allen on the coverage.
00:46:10Glenn Edwards close by.
00:46:12Cowboys will have to punt.
00:46:14And a ball was thrown behind the receiver and he was well covered at the same time.
00:46:18Roger has his problems right now and the crowd loves it.
00:46:21They love that steel curtain defense.
00:46:23Sellout crowd at Pittsburgh.
00:46:26Watching the Cowboys and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
00:46:30Jim Smith.
00:46:32Number 86.
00:46:34That's black jersey.
00:46:36And number 11 is Danny White.
00:46:384th and 6th for Dallas.
00:46:43Just got it away.
00:46:45Almost blocked by Jack Hamm.
00:46:48It's a Cowboys roll and goes down to about the 32.
00:46:51Where the Pittsburgh Steelers will take it over.
00:46:55Scott Laidlaw is number 35 for Dallas.
00:46:58Let's go back and see how close this came to being blocked.
00:47:01And Danny White has had one punt blocked already this year.
00:47:04So there might be the feeling they could get close.
00:47:08We had a problem.
00:47:10Danny White had a problem.
00:47:12Pittsburgh has the football.
00:47:14And the momentum too right now.
00:47:16It has swung.
00:47:18Franco Harris.
00:47:19Touchdown runs with the Steelers ahead.
00:47:22One right to relocate the extra point.
00:47:25Terry Bradshaw the quarterback for Pittsburgh.
00:47:277'6 to score.
00:47:29And Rocky Blyar gets the call.
00:47:31Rocky Blyar.
00:47:33Outside the 40.
00:47:35Mark Washington made the tackle.
00:47:37But Blyar got the good yardage.
00:47:39And he ran straight at Randy White.
00:47:41And the Dallas flex defense.
00:47:43Some people didn't think maybe Sam Davis, that left guard, could block Randy White.
00:47:47But I'll tell you one thing.
00:47:49He could have shooted him out that time.
00:47:51Look at this score from the West Coast.
00:47:533-3.
00:47:5549ers and Rams.
00:47:57And Sutton's warming up in the bullpen, huh?
00:48:018-yard pickup by Rocky Blyar on first down.
00:48:05So they've got two to go for a first.
00:48:14Blyar again.
00:48:17Close.
00:48:20Number 53, the Dallas middle linebacker, is playing with an injured toe.
00:48:24Seattle over Houston, 3-0.
00:48:26Houston, of course, in the AFC Central, as are the Steelers.
00:48:30It's conceivable we could have a four-way tie for first place.
00:48:33Cincinnati has won.
00:48:35And, of course, Pittsburgh needs this game.
00:48:38But they have won a couple of crucial games over Cleveland already.
00:48:42The Steelers, that means.
00:48:44Right.
00:48:46Cleveland played the Giants.
00:48:47And the last time we looked, they were leading 21-7.
00:48:52So now it is not conceivable to have a four-way tie.
00:48:55Sorry.
00:48:57They can't get there.
00:48:59Cincinnati beat Miami.
00:49:01So they're 5-5.
00:49:03Houston playing later.
00:49:05Pittsburgh 5-4.
00:49:07And Cleveland's record goes up to 6-4.
00:49:09It's a catfight.
00:49:12Nothing like it.
00:49:14First down, Steelers.
00:49:15Ball to Broome, 43-yard line.
00:49:17They lead by one.
00:49:19And Franco Harris again.
00:49:21Almost broke it again.
00:49:23Harris got it first down.
00:49:25Stopped by Harris.
00:49:27They're cutting off Jethro Q.
00:49:29And watch and see what they do to Bruni, the middle linebacker.
00:49:32Webster, they double-team on the outside.
00:49:35And the tackle comes down.
00:49:37The trap from the outside.
00:49:39The toughest thing you can read as a linebacker.
00:49:41Cliff Harris has to hang on, or he's gone.
00:49:43Terry Bratshaw, the man who calls the plays for the Steelers,
00:49:47is the quarterback.
00:49:49It's first down for Pittsburgh.
00:49:51100 yards rushing for Franco Harris.
00:49:53I prematurely gave him that before the last run.
00:49:56No score between the Oakland Raiders and San Diego.
00:50:00Second quarter.
00:50:0211-54 left to play here in the second period.
00:50:05Steelers lead by one.
00:50:077-6.
00:50:09The pitch back to Franco Harris.
00:50:10This time Bruni gets out there with him.
00:50:13Benny Barnes helped him.
00:50:15You know, the biggest problem with Franco Harris is
00:50:18they can't keep him from being charitable.
00:50:20He does everything that a kid's charity wants in this town,
00:50:23and they have to finally take him out of the walk-a-thons
00:50:25and the different things to raise money for children's hospitals
00:50:28and MS and all, and tell Franco,
00:50:30Franco, do that in the offseason,
00:50:32but try to get some rest.
00:50:34He is a dynamite guy.
00:50:36I mean that.
00:50:38And a dynamite guy.
00:50:40He's a dynamite runner as well.
00:50:42Two-yard pick-up by Franco Harris.
00:50:44Second and eight situation.
00:50:46Line of scrimmage is the Dallas 45.
00:50:497-6, Pittsburgh.
00:50:51Fresh out of throw.
00:50:53The screen looks like it'll work.
00:50:55Benny Cunningham has it.
00:50:57Bumble!
00:50:59And the Steelers got it back.
00:51:01Flag goes down.
00:51:03That might have been a late hit.
00:51:06I believe John Stallworth is the guy who made the recovery,
00:51:08number 82.
00:51:10Well, what a great call by Bradshaw.
00:51:12The old screen back or screen away.
00:51:14Why, Tittle used to run this beautifully.
00:51:16And it's going to be an alignment downfield.
00:51:18It looked like Webster, number 52,
00:51:20the center, might have drifted downfield on the screen.
00:51:23When you're eager to get down and knock somebody
00:51:25for the screenplay,
00:51:27sometimes you hedge a little bit.
00:51:29Let's see.
00:51:35I can read lips, and this is Webster.
00:51:38And I'll tell you,
00:51:40it's tough to know where the line of scrimmage is.
00:51:42Watch 52, now he goes over and checks.
00:51:44Then lets the rush come,
00:51:46and this is the one that Tittle used to run so well.
00:51:48Throw it back,
00:51:50and the chase is taking everybody out of the play.
00:51:52Now watch this 250-pound tight end
00:51:54take a shot here.
00:51:56It's Waters.
00:51:58No, that was Cliff Harris.
00:52:00You would expect that.
00:52:02From either of them.
00:52:047-6, Pittsburgh lead.
00:52:06The screen is brought back,
00:52:08Bradshaw outside stalwart,
00:52:10went to his knees,
00:52:12and again he goes to his knees
00:52:14as Randy Hughes came over to make the tackle.
00:52:16Helped by Mark Washington.
00:52:20One thing, Pittsburgh offense
00:52:22has a lot of different things in it.
00:52:24Suddenly now we've seen two screens in a row,
00:52:26and the big misconception on Terry Bradshaw,
00:52:29somebody once said,
00:52:31here's a score from Atlanta now
00:52:33over New Orleans in the fourth period,
00:52:35but somebody once said he wasn't an intelligent person
00:52:36and all that,
00:52:38and I was told by the scouting systems
00:52:40that gave him an IQ test
00:52:42that he broke the bank.
00:52:44So for those people that have listened
00:52:46to the wrong information,
00:52:48Bradshaw is extremely swift upstairs.
00:52:50The heck of an athlete
00:52:52to go along with that intelligence.
00:52:54In fact, I heard from one head coach
00:52:56that if he hadn't been drafted as a quarterback,
00:52:58he would have been drafted number one
00:53:00as a tight end.
00:53:02That's how good an athlete he is.
00:53:04Look out!
00:53:07Sack number 41
00:53:09for the fellows from Dallas, Texas.
00:53:12Boy, they do come,
00:53:14and when Randy White gets you in the blind side...
00:53:20Dallas offside.
00:53:22Something is wrong, we understand,
00:53:24with the microphone
00:53:26that referee Bob Frederick is wearing.
00:53:28That's not all bad.
00:53:30No.
00:53:32So, if you can read lips,
00:53:34that's a good sign.
00:53:36As we discuss who the violation is against,
00:53:38welcome.
00:53:40We'll try with you.
00:53:42Defense.
00:53:44Offside.
00:53:46Third down.
00:53:48Thank you, Bob.
00:53:50Somebody was offside.
00:53:52Each team has three penalties now.
00:53:54The offsides are even at two apiece.
00:53:56Third and seven.
00:53:58Ball to Dallas, 44.
00:54:00Randy White was the sacker
00:54:02on that last play.
00:54:04Danny White is warming up
00:54:07Here's Bradshaw,
00:54:09going to take off.
00:54:11He calls Jones, takes him down.
00:54:14I'm wondering about how Bradshaw
00:54:16takes the snap so well,
00:54:18because that cast on his left hand
00:54:20is a pretty good-sized cast.
00:54:22In the fourth quarter,
00:54:24Philadelphia, 16.
00:54:26St. Louis Cardinals, 14.
00:54:28Ooh, the Cardinals are so swift.
00:54:30I bet Vermeule wishes that one was over now.
00:54:32Vermeule being the Philadelphia Eagle head coach.
00:54:36The Eagles are starting to believe.
00:54:40Bobby Walden is number 39.
00:54:43The Cowboys fake him.
00:54:45They're going to try to block it.
00:54:51And a high to the left side.
00:54:53And out of bounds inside the five.
00:54:56Fine effort.
00:54:58Now he comes out exactly to the five.
00:55:01Bobby Walden turned those fans around
00:55:04from booing him to cheering him on.
00:55:06His ninth kick inside the 20,
00:55:09and it came at a good time.
00:55:117-6, Pittsburgh.
00:55:17What does it take to get a loan
00:55:19from your full-service banker
00:55:21so that you can open a small business like this?
00:55:23Let's ask two people who know.
00:55:25Bruce and Phyllis Doty.
00:55:27We were turned down once, Ed.
00:55:29But then our banker found
00:55:31we had experienced some collateral
00:55:33and a good credit rating.
00:55:34That's full-service banking.
00:55:36Making good loans, creating jobs,
00:55:38helping people get started.
00:55:40No financial institution can help you
00:55:42and your community more than a full-service bank.
00:55:48Hey, Stitch.
00:55:50They're stitching us into something new.
00:55:53Levi's new Dura Plus denim.
00:55:55It's a lot stronger.
00:55:57I know.
00:55:59And shrinkage.
00:56:01Won't have to worry about that anymore.
00:56:02And look, our wrinkle worries are over.
00:56:04Smooth.
00:56:06And Dura Plus fades with washing,
00:56:08just like you'd expect denim to.
00:56:10Gee.
00:56:12Levi's Dura Plus denim jeans.
00:56:14Something new.
00:56:16From out of the blue.
00:56:18I predict she's going to win.
00:56:20Don't miss 22 big stars competing.
00:56:22Wish I was a pool table.
00:56:24Flip Wilson hosts Celebrity Challenge of the Sexes
00:56:26tonight at 8, 7 Central and Mountain.
00:56:32Mentioned a minute ago that Danny White
00:56:34was warming up, but the Dallas quarterback
00:56:36is still Roger Starbucks.
00:56:38He has won for four
00:56:40and has not done the ball that well so far.
00:56:42He's been bothered by a bad hand
00:56:44and a bad hip.
00:56:46Robert Newhouse trying to get around
00:56:48to the outside and does.
00:56:50Newhouse still on his feet
00:56:52out to about the 34.
00:56:54Stopped finally by Glenn Edwards.
00:56:56But much more than enough
00:56:58for a first down for Robert Newhouse.
00:57:00As you look at Tom Landry
00:57:02with the gold in the Richards
00:57:04and sitting in the play.
00:57:06Here's Newhouse.
00:57:08An 18 yarder was his longest run.
00:57:10That was 29.
00:57:12And he just went over the top.
00:57:14Now he gets outside of Jack Hamm
00:57:16and you don't see that very often.
00:57:18The main thing is that he's so stumpy
00:57:20he's got the balance.
00:57:22He won't run out of bounds either.
00:57:24I guarantee he'll stay in the field of play.
00:57:26Give credit to Butch Johnson,
00:57:28number 86, for a good block.
00:57:29You can tell as Dallas gets out
00:57:31of the shadow of the goal line.
00:57:33First down for them.
00:57:35It's all about Billy Joe Dupree
00:57:37at the 50.
00:57:39Dupree at the 45 inside the Pittsburgh 45.
00:57:41Stopped by Glenn Edwards.
00:57:43Big B.J. wide open.
00:57:45How old is that play?
00:57:47We were talking about it before the game
00:57:49that Jimmy thinks once through one of these
00:57:51the LB nickel.
00:57:53It's a pop pass.
00:57:55You fake the inside play
00:57:57and then dump it to the tight end.
00:57:59He's chasing.
00:58:02It's another first down for the Cowboys
00:58:04at the Steeler 44.
00:58:06Just over eight minutes left to play
00:58:08before the half.
00:58:10First and ten, Dallas, Dorsett, and Newhouse.
00:58:12The running backs behind that guy.
00:58:14Shawbuck.
00:58:19Shawbuck fires.
00:58:21Caught by Butch Johnson.
00:58:23Another Dallas first down
00:58:25and a heck of a catch.
00:58:27Dennis Winston.
00:58:29Now has taken the lead over Kansas City.
00:58:3114-7, fourth quarter score.
00:58:33Butch Johnson doesn't get to play a lot
00:58:35but I've seldom seen him
00:58:37when he didn't produce exactly what Landry
00:58:39thought he could do at that moment.
00:58:41He is an extremely fine football player.
00:58:43Today at least he and Golden Richards
00:58:45are alternating at the wide receiver spot
00:58:48bringing in plays from
00:58:50the only head coach Dallas has ever had,
00:58:52Tom Landry.
00:58:54Golden Richards and Drew Pearson
00:58:56come to the left side together
00:58:57in the formation.
00:58:59It's back to Dorsett.
00:59:01Flag is down.
00:59:13They've played this way for years.
00:59:17Good block by Donovan that time
00:59:19got Newhouse to the corner.
00:59:21That funny looking defense
00:59:23that Pittsburgh uses sometimes
00:59:25has Joe Green almost on top
00:59:27of the offensive center.
00:59:29Number 75 offside.
00:59:31First down.
00:59:34Harry Bradshaw
00:59:36looking on.
00:59:40I'll tell you one thing,
00:59:42he takes the bad with the good.
00:59:44He wears extremely well this man.
00:59:46Burton Wallace is number 66.
00:59:51Roger Strobach of course is number 12.
00:59:54Set in motion.
00:59:56And back.
00:59:59Not much doing there.
01:00:01Lauren Taves is number 51.
01:00:03Number 53 is
01:00:05Dennis Winston.
01:00:07Taves comes up and does exactly
01:00:09what you want the linebacker to do.
01:00:11Make sure it's sealed off inside.
01:00:13Here you can see Wallace trying to get outside.
01:00:15Taves, very strong upper body strength.
01:00:17And all he's trying to do is play
01:00:19as good a right linebacking job as he can.
01:00:21He looks like a pretty good football player
01:00:23to me.
01:00:26Baltimore 26.
01:00:28The Jets 12.
01:00:30Fourth quarter score in Baltimore.
01:00:32Second down here.
01:00:34Pittsburgh leads Dallas 76.
01:00:36And back to Dorsett.
01:00:39Breaks a couple.
01:00:41Got close to first down yardage.
01:00:43Jack Hamm is number 59
01:00:45who finally made the tackle
01:00:47on TD.
01:00:49He's always full length forward
01:00:51when the darn play is over.
01:00:53He's looking for more.
01:00:56Looks like he's about a yard shy
01:00:58of a first down.
01:01:00So it'll be third.
01:01:02Out goes Newhouse and in comes
01:01:04Preston Pearson to join Dorsett.
01:01:06Running back and out.
01:01:08Here comes Newhouse back.
01:01:10Mr. Landry changed his mind.
01:01:12You see the tight formation
01:01:14with sort of the
01:01:16short punt type thing
01:01:18with three backs close maybe.
01:01:20That's right.
01:01:22Preston Pearson and Newhouse
01:01:24behind Staubach.
01:01:28Dorsett and Roger Staubach
01:01:30is going for Jay Salvin.
01:01:32He's got it. Dallas touchdown.
01:01:35Oh what a call.
01:01:37Did that come from Irma Allen upstairs?
01:01:39I don't know. It was a great call.
01:01:41I followed Newhouse to see if he could block.
01:01:43I followed Dorsett and thought
01:01:45my gosh he didn't get the first down.
01:01:47And Roger came out throwing.
01:01:49That call from the bench
01:01:51I'll never forget that.
01:01:53Fitzgerald Company go to work.
01:01:55Rafferty's got Mean Joe Greenoff
01:01:57and everybody's going for Dorsett.
01:01:59I would have. In fact I did.
01:02:01Look at this throw.
01:02:03He doesn't have to be artistic.
01:02:05Sally's not going to drop it is he?
01:02:08I'd like to welcome
01:02:10Philadelphia and St. Louis audience
01:02:12to Cardinals beat the Eagles 21 to 16.
01:02:14And those of you who watched that
01:02:16were up for the risk.
01:02:18Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshire.
01:02:19Dallas 13. Pittsburgh 7.
01:02:21And we have 5 minutes
01:02:23and 26 seconds left to go
01:02:25before the half.
01:02:33This year when you step out on the town
01:02:36don't just drive.
01:02:38Take off in a 1978 Thunderbird
01:02:40with its distinctive look and size.
01:02:42Its Thunderbird quality and comfort.
01:02:44And it comes at a down to earth price
01:02:46of $5,808
01:02:47with automatic transmission,
01:02:49power steering, power brakes,
01:02:51V8 and more.
01:02:53Flight test the 1978 Thunderbird.
01:02:55When America needs a better idea
01:02:57Ford puts it on wheels.
01:03:00Tubor Gold
01:03:02the golden beer of Danish kings.
01:03:05By appointment to the Royal Danish Court.
01:03:08Tubor Gold
01:03:10only centuries of the Danish brewer's art
01:03:13could achieve its noble character
01:03:15for likeness and flavor.
01:03:17Tubor Gold
01:03:19now brewed in America.
01:03:21So for about what you pay
01:03:23for the king of beers
01:03:25you can now have Tubor Gold
01:03:27the golden beer of Danish kings.
01:03:32A Dallas scoring drive.
01:03:345 plays.
01:03:3695 yards.
01:03:39Robert Newhouse
01:03:41had a 29 yard run
01:03:43to start it off
01:03:45and a touchdown pass
01:03:48That's Alvin Maxim
01:03:50number 28
01:03:52and he breaks around it to him.
01:03:54Hooray!
01:03:56Randy Hughes finally caught him.
01:03:58But Pittsburgh has it back
01:04:00in good shape.
01:04:02And the Cowboys
01:04:04seem to think that they can cover
01:04:06kickoffs as well as anybody
01:04:08and they haven't today.
01:04:10Pittsburgh is really using the run back
01:04:12to get to field position.
01:04:14Here's the former New Orleans Saints
01:04:15on the right side.
01:04:17Efren gives it the best shot he can
01:04:19and now Hughes pulls him down from behind.
01:04:24You can't relax against any team
01:04:27but particularly a good team
01:04:29like Pittsburgh.
01:04:31A stealer first down
01:04:33with 5 minutes 14 seconds left to play
01:04:35before the half and Frank O'Hara
01:04:37ducks under a couple
01:04:39Jeff Thoreau Pugh is number 75.
01:04:41The George Burns
01:04:43one man show
01:04:45and only the sly George Burns
01:04:47could do it.
01:04:49And Margaret's going to help him too.
01:04:51Pretty good help I'd say.
01:04:53He'll also have Gladys Knight
01:04:55and the Pips, the captain and Tennille
01:04:57and a special friend named Bob Hope.
01:04:59Sort of misleading isn't it?
01:05:01George Burns is worth the price
01:05:03of admission all by himself.
01:05:05Those other folks are pretty good too.
01:05:07Second and seven.
01:05:09Rocky Blyer stays back to block.
01:05:12Lin Suan accepts the pass
01:05:15from Terry Bradshaw.
01:05:17I beg your pardon, John Stallworth
01:05:19not Lin Suan.
01:05:21Mark Washington on the coverage.
01:05:24Boy this young man had two TD passes
01:05:26last week against Cleveland.
01:05:28Now watch him.
01:05:30He goes down and sets it up
01:05:32drives Washington off
01:05:34and turns him all the way around really.
01:05:36Ball is perfectly thrown
01:05:38back to get it.
01:05:40You're never going to break that one up.
01:05:42Not if you're wise.
01:05:44Williams has taken the lead
01:05:46over Atlanta.
01:05:4821-20, fourth quarter score.
01:05:50First down here, 13-7 Dallas.
01:05:52Bradshaw's going for it again.
01:05:54Looking for Suan.
01:05:56He's in the corner.
01:05:58He's going to be out of the end zone
01:06:00if he catches it.
01:06:01And he is.
01:06:03Benny Barnes on the coverage.
01:06:05I'll tell you that track is rough stuff
01:06:06but he's scored and made the catch
01:06:08and he's got to be shaken up.
01:06:10That's the baseball warning track
01:06:13so that the outfielders will know
01:06:15when they're close to that fence
01:06:17and Lin Suan and his desire
01:06:19to catch that football is still down.
01:06:21You know what an asphalt pizza burn is
01:06:23if you fall down on it.
01:06:25That's just what Lin Suan received.
01:06:27He hit that fence pretty hard.
01:06:30I'll never forget his Super Bowl.
01:06:32His MVP Super Bowl two years ago.
01:06:34That was one of the great exhibitions
01:06:36I've seen in a long time.
01:06:38There were two catches in that game
01:06:40that nobody I think who ever saw it
01:06:42will ever forget.
01:06:43Look at this.
01:06:44This one doesn't count
01:06:46but he went and drove right on through
01:06:48and made the catch.
01:06:50A lot of receivers would have said
01:06:52eh, I'll wait for the next one.
01:06:54He didn't hit the wall that hard
01:06:56but he did about a 15-yard skid
01:06:58out of the end zone
01:07:00across that play track.
01:07:02And he's up now.
01:07:04He only weighs 174 pounds
01:07:06which is a lot I'll tell you.
01:07:08Every pound.
01:07:12Here's what happened to Linus Grimm.
01:07:14It's Harvey Mark now against Howell.
01:07:16And I'll tell you
01:07:18that is some kind of a battle going on.
01:07:20Now he's picked up in double to make sure.
01:07:22And they all watch.
01:07:24Here comes Suan
01:07:26and that of course is Chuck Knoll
01:07:28greeting him on the sideline.
01:07:30The Rams now over the 49ers
01:07:3210-3 in the second quarter.
01:07:34Second down and 10 for Pittsburgh.
01:07:36LeVon Linus Grimm is the downer.
01:07:3832.
01:07:39That's what gives him a draw play to Franco Harris.
01:07:41This time he is wrapped up
01:07:43by Harvey Martin
01:07:45who read it well.
01:07:48Alright, in the flex defense
01:07:50Harvey Martin goes outside
01:07:52and he's still so darn quick
01:07:54he gets back through the block of call
01:07:56but we had a good one and knocks Franco down.
01:07:58You know who's doing a good job on offense
01:08:00is the offensive tackle Larry Brown
01:08:01who used to be the tight end.
01:08:03You see him on the left side of your huddle
01:08:05at number 79.
01:08:07He's now right in there in the trench.
01:08:09He used to be 220, now he's 250.
01:08:11He should be in the trench.
01:08:13Three minutes and 50 seconds left
01:08:15before the half.
01:08:17Dallas
01:08:19goes right behind him
01:08:21putting him just down inside the 10
01:08:23for another Pittsburgh first down.
01:08:25Randy Hughes made the tackle.
01:08:27Dallas had a blitz going
01:08:29but Bradshaw the Steelers read it well.
01:08:32The third completion by Bradshaw.
01:08:34Watch how he takes a little off.
01:08:36Good quarterbacks can do this.
01:08:38He's got a 6 foot 5, 250 pound tight end
01:08:40that's just open enough.
01:08:42It's an excellent throw
01:08:44and a big target.
01:08:46Super throw.
01:08:48He had to throw it like that to get it over Charlie Waters.
01:08:50If he had thrown it on the line
01:08:52he would have knocked it down.
01:08:54Benny Cunningham.
01:08:56That's why Larry Brown
01:08:58has the tight end now.
01:09:00Because of the abilities of
01:09:02number 89, Benny Cunningham.
01:09:04First down, Steelers.
01:09:06At the 9, it's just in goal.
01:09:09Bradshaw's got through again.
01:09:11And Dallas
01:09:13going to have a touchdown.
01:09:25I think that pretty well tells the story.
01:09:28Bradshaw
01:09:30not only happy
01:09:32but on target.
01:09:34Look at that cast on his left arm.
01:09:36He's played this 6th game.
01:09:38Good fake here.
01:09:40Barnes is never in the chase on this one.
01:09:42There's the throw, taken off again.
01:09:44Aha! Inside the field of play this time.
01:09:46Lin Suan.
01:09:48The experts
01:09:50who pick odds in games like this
01:09:52have established Pittsburgh
01:09:54as a one point favorite.
01:09:59The score is 14-13.
01:10:01Boy, they're acronauts, eh?
01:10:05Some people you'd expect to know a lot about football
01:10:08don't know a lot.
01:10:10And some people
01:10:12do know a lot.
01:10:14This is what the game is all about, though.
01:10:16Lin Suan is back over there
01:10:18right by the liquid containers.
01:10:20He falls into the track,
01:10:22goes into the wall,
01:10:24gets the abrasions,
01:10:26and comes back and gets the TD pass.
01:10:28Terry Bradshaw, so far today,
01:10:30is 4 out of 8.
01:10:32One touchdown pass,
01:10:34you just saw him throw
01:10:36to Lin Suan.
01:10:38Total yards are 48.
01:10:40But Pittsburgh has the lead.
01:10:4214-13.
01:10:44You know, that cowboy defense
01:10:46has only been allowed, I think, 36%
01:10:48of the passes to be completed.
01:10:50Bradshaw's doing a job.
01:10:5233-12.
01:10:54Final score.
01:10:56Burt Jones and group continue to roll
01:10:58to make their 9-1.
01:11:00Yeah, they're looking for
01:11:02big things in January.
01:11:04Aren't we all?
01:11:06We are.
01:11:08The biggest thing is the Super Bowl,
01:11:10and you'll see that here on CBS.
01:11:12That's Larry Brinson with the football.
01:11:15Brinson stumbles out to about the 25.
01:11:18Kept his balance for about an extra yard.
01:11:21Now, the pitch of the game has gone up.
01:11:24And until they go in at halftime,
01:11:26you're going to see probably some late hitting
01:11:28and you're going to see a lot of extracurricular stuff.
01:11:30Both teams are getting
01:11:32a little bit of bracing right now.
01:11:34New Orleans defeated Atlanta 21-20.
01:11:37And those of you who watched that upset,
01:11:40welcome to this broadcast.
01:11:42Pat Summerall with Tom Brookshire
01:11:44at Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh
01:11:46where the score here is
01:11:48Pittsburgh 14, Dallas 13.
01:11:50We have two minutes and 40 seconds
01:11:52left to play before the half.
01:11:55Salvi comes in motion.
01:11:56Garbach throws back to Gorseth.
01:11:58Flag goes down as Gorseth
01:12:00breaks into the secondary and picks up about six.
01:12:02They're going to call a crackback block
01:12:04on the man in motion for Dallas
01:12:06on Jack Hamm, the linebacker.
01:12:08I believe he came back and
01:12:10hit him a shot in the back.
01:12:12White, white, applauding
01:12:15the men in the striped shirts.
01:12:17You don't see that too often, do you?
01:12:19No.
01:12:22Atlanta's record now,
01:12:24by the way, after that loss
01:12:26to New Orleans is five and five.
01:12:29The Saints go to three and seven.
01:12:32Take him back.
01:12:34I don't think they crack back and clip Jack Hamm.
01:12:36I think they just tried to tackle him.
01:12:38Both are illegal.
01:12:40Fine, but illegal.
01:12:44Bob Frederick goes back
01:12:46in the other direction.
01:12:51Offensive holding, number 86.
01:12:54First down.
01:12:57Instead of cracking back,
01:12:59he's holding down.
01:13:01Put the clamps on.
01:13:03And now they'd like to force Roger
01:13:05to go upstairs with something he doesn't want to do.
01:13:07Maybe he doesn't want to throw it real quickly.
01:13:09On first and 20, he throws outside to Gorseth.
01:13:11And look out.
01:13:13Can be dangerous, this fellow.
01:13:15Mel Blount finally tackled him,
01:13:17but they almost got the first down.
01:13:19The scary thing is, it looked like
01:13:21the Pittsburgh defense was in pretty good shape
01:13:23until he caught the ball.
01:13:24And then everything seems to open up.
01:13:27He was really looking forward to this game.
01:13:30And to his first start of this year, of course.
01:13:33So many fans and so many friends in this area
01:13:35from his collegiate days
01:13:37and from his high school days nearby.
01:13:40He asked for 100 extra tickets.
01:13:43I don't know if he got them all.
01:13:46He can afford to pay the scalper for him, I tell you.
01:13:48He's got a little bit of money to pay.
01:13:51Gave up a lot for him.
01:13:52And then they gave him a lot, too.
01:13:54You know, people said that when they saw him
01:13:56at Hopewell High, that you could see then
01:13:58that this was going to be one of the great ones.
01:14:00It just didn't happen overnight.
01:14:02He had it.
01:14:04Those people were right.
01:14:06He got a first down.
01:14:08Ball at the 36-yard line for the Cowboys.
01:14:10Two minutes, seven seconds left to play.
01:14:12One more play before a few minutes warning.
01:14:14Gets the call again and again.
01:14:16He got about eight.
01:14:18Ernie Holmes made the tackle.
01:14:20A blocked extra point.
01:14:23That's the difference.
01:14:2514, boom, boom.
01:14:2714, 13 to score.
01:14:29A minute, 59 left to play before a half.
01:14:32The Steelers up by one.
01:14:38Wherever you may roam,
01:14:40you'll find our name is known.
01:14:42You can trust me.
01:14:44We try harder than this.
01:14:46It is true.
01:14:47We are the Raiders.
01:14:49In this we don't know another way.
01:14:55Stay with us at halftime
01:14:57as we'll update all the scores
01:14:59and highlights from around the league.
01:15:01Have a special report
01:15:03on that historic meeting in the Mideast
01:15:05between the Israelis and the Arabs.
01:15:07Fagan and Sadat.
01:15:10And one heck of a football game
01:15:12going on right here at Three Rivers Stadium.
01:15:14Tom Brookshire and Pat Summerall
01:15:15scores 14-13.
01:15:17Pittsburgh leads Dallas
01:15:19second and three situations in the shotgun.
01:15:22The protection is good and Dorsett has it.
01:15:24Oh!
01:15:26And he is popped hard by Winston.
01:15:28The ball went loose
01:15:30and let's see what they ruled.
01:15:32I think the reception will stand
01:15:34but that was a fumble
01:15:36and I'll tell you, Winston can move
01:15:38and hit at the end of it.
01:15:40He has destroyed a couple of
01:15:42Cowboy receivers already.
01:15:43Let's see who it was that ran over him.
01:15:45It was 5-3.
01:15:47You could see Dorsett
01:15:49aware very much of the fact that
01:15:52Dirt was coming
01:15:54and he tried to duck under
01:15:56and just barely did not.
01:15:58Third down shotgun situation.
01:16:00Outside Preston Pearson.
01:16:02Got the first down.
01:16:04Moore out of bounds at the 45
01:16:06in Pittsburgh territory.
01:16:08Dwight White made the tackle.
01:16:10He's a hometown boy coming back too.
01:16:11I don't need to play with the Steelers
01:16:13but he lives around here.
01:16:15He might have a couple of hundred tickets.
01:16:18Preston Pearson and Tony Dorsett
01:16:20have been battling all year
01:16:22for the starting position
01:16:24at halfback in that Cowboy offensive unit
01:16:26and until today it had been Pearson.
01:16:28Today, Dorsett.
01:16:32Tom Landry has
01:16:34Butch Johnson,
01:16:36Roger Staubach,
01:16:38Golden Richards gathered around
01:16:39the Chicago Bears
01:16:41against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day
01:16:4312 o'clock noon eastern time
01:16:45here on CBS.
01:16:46We'll be there.
01:16:48Turkey in Detroit.
01:16:50What kind of turkey do you prefer?
01:16:52I'll bring a bird with me.
01:16:54OK.
01:16:56Can I answer later?
01:16:58Roger is 10 for 13 for 113 yards
01:17:01and the surprise TD to Saudi on
01:17:03Walter Payton.
01:17:05Of course you'll see in that game
01:17:07a silver dome in Detroit
01:17:09for Jack.
01:17:11Walter Payton
01:17:12in case you might not know
01:17:14carried the ball 40 times today
01:17:16for the Chicago Bears
01:17:17as they beat Minnesota
01:17:19and picked up 275 yards.
01:17:22I haven't had a chance to see him work.
01:17:24That's going to be an experience.
01:17:27We're looking at a great guy work today.
01:17:29More than one really.
01:17:31Franco Harris,
01:17:33Tony Dorsett,
01:17:34Rocky Blyer,
01:17:36Newhouse has been good.
01:17:40First down, Dallas.
01:17:44Robach operating from the deep spot.
01:17:46Ducking.
01:17:48And down he goes.
01:17:49Back in his own 45.
01:17:51Steve Furness.
01:17:54Dwight White.
01:17:55And I mean a tough sack.
01:17:56A physical sack
01:17:57because Roger did not want to go down
01:17:58and lose too much.
01:17:59The Cowboys are thinking
01:18:00at least three.
01:18:02Now watch this.
01:18:03Watch the left of your screen
01:18:04as Mean Joe Green goes to the outside
01:18:06and Furness gets to the inside
01:18:07and Donovan loses him
01:18:08and that is a tough physical sack.
01:18:10That's a mugging.
01:18:13Again the shotgun
01:18:14by Dallas.
01:18:15This time he has time
01:18:16and outside
01:18:17Preston Pearson.
01:18:19He got out of bounds.
01:18:21Jack Hamm was the closest stealer.
01:18:24He didn't get much.
01:18:26But the clock has stopped
01:18:27with a minute and three seconds
01:18:28left to play.
01:18:2914-13.
01:18:31Pittsburgh over Dallas.
01:18:33Dorsett is in the game now.
01:18:34You might as well get him
01:18:35out of the backfield
01:18:36and into the pass pattern
01:18:37because you don't want him
01:18:38having to step up
01:18:39and block one of those
01:18:41defensive linemen
01:18:42that gets away.
01:18:43That could shorten a career
01:18:44by about.
01:18:46Four years.
01:18:49A minute three seconds left
01:18:51before the half.
01:18:53Dallas with three timeouts
01:18:55remaining and.
01:18:56Pittsburgh has.
01:18:57The same number.
01:19:0014-13.
01:19:01The Steelers over the Cowboys.
01:19:03First time they've met
01:19:04in regular season.
01:19:06Super Bowl number 10.
01:19:09Starbuck operates.
01:19:10And the shotgun again
01:19:11on third down.
01:19:15Fires down the middle
01:19:16for Drew Pearson.
01:19:17And Drew Pearson.
01:19:19Is popped.
01:19:20Woo.
01:19:21Edwards really hit him a shot.
01:19:22J.T. Thomas
01:19:23was made the coverage.
01:19:28Drew coming across the middle
01:19:29and watch him take
01:19:30this blow to the head.
01:19:31And I love the Steelers defense
01:19:32because they don't go
01:19:33into a pre-event.
01:19:34They play you tough
01:19:35line of scrimmage.
01:19:36And a secondary plays
01:19:37a man to man.
01:19:38There's the Freeland.
01:19:39Right after he'd missed
01:19:40the ball.
01:19:42So the Cowboys now
01:19:43put in their punting unit.
01:19:44And back.
01:19:45For Pittsburgh goes
01:19:46Jim Smith.
01:19:48Don't forget now Danny White
01:19:49is the quarterback.
01:19:55The possibility of a pass
01:19:56always remains.
01:19:59A high angling kick
01:20:00trying to get it out of bounds.
01:20:03And Danny White does.
01:20:04Pittsburgh will take over.
01:20:10Sixteen yard line.
01:20:11Starbucks have one of
01:20:12his greatest days.
01:20:13And yet this team trails
01:20:14by a point.
01:20:15He's 11 for 15 for 118
01:20:16and a touchdown.
01:20:18And they're shy at one.
01:20:20That blocked extra point.
01:20:22By Dennis Winston.
01:20:26Makes the score 14 13.
01:20:28As Roy Jurela.
01:20:29Has hit both of his.
01:20:30That's Bill Gregory.
01:20:31Good pass rusher.
01:20:32That's why he's there.
01:20:34That's what Dallas
01:20:35is figuring right now.
01:20:36That the Steelers will
01:20:37try to throw.
01:20:39The draw to Franco Harris
01:20:40it's a tough play now.
01:20:43Let's give it to Franco Harris.
01:20:44It's a tough play.
01:20:46Harvey Martin.
01:20:47Bill Gregory.
01:20:59That doesn't look
01:21:01like you'd like to be staring
01:21:02across my scrimmage at Harvey
01:21:03all day.
01:21:07There he is.
01:21:08I think I'd rather be
01:21:09someplace else.
01:21:10You can play Jimmy with
01:21:11her stuff in the morning
01:21:12but he's not going to fool me.
01:21:13I'm not going to play on
01:21:14Sunday afternoon with him
01:21:15I'll tell you that.
01:21:22Clock running.
01:21:23Very Bradshaw gives the
01:21:24Franco.
01:21:26Franco bangs into
01:21:27Thomas Henderson.
01:21:29And Aaron Kyle.
01:21:31Good to see him back.
01:21:35Last play of
01:21:36half number one.
01:21:39Pittsburgh crosses
01:21:42the Dallas unit.
01:21:43They're both head for
01:21:44their locker room.
01:21:45The Steelers go there
01:21:47with a one point lead
01:21:48over the Cowboys.
01:21:59Schlitz Light.
01:22:01Schlitz Light beer has
01:22:02a third fewer calories
01:22:03than our other fine beer.
01:22:04And all the taste
01:22:05beer drinkers expect
01:22:06from Schlitz.
01:22:08Is that what the
01:22:09gentleman always orders?
01:22:10That's his beer.
01:22:11The only light beer
01:22:12with gusto.
01:22:13We'll have
01:22:14two Schlitz Lights.
01:22:16Beer drinkers know
01:22:17it took Schlitz to bring
01:22:18the taste to light.
01:22:22This drop is too little
01:22:23to cover the head of a match.
01:22:26Yet this beer
01:22:27is enough adhesive
01:22:28super strong,
01:22:29super fast
01:22:30to lift two and a half tons.
01:22:33It's Duro Super Glue.
01:22:35A drop will do
01:22:36to mend jewelry,
01:22:38ceramics,
01:22:39rubber,
01:22:40and glass
01:22:41in only ten seconds.
01:22:43It truly is
01:22:44super strong
01:22:45and super fast.
01:22:46Super Glue.
01:22:47A drop will do.
01:22:49Super Glue.
01:22:50A product of
01:22:51Loctite Technology.

01:23:37I might even
01:23:38lap over
01:23:39into the next program.
01:23:40This isn't
01:23:41really a nurse.
01:23:42I promise
01:23:43to put her
01:23:44on television.
01:23:45Wednesday at 10,
01:23:469, Central and Mountain.
01:23:47Tonight,
01:23:48CBS Sports presents
01:23:49Celebrity Challenge
01:23:50of the Sexes
01:23:51with Carol Fawcett Majors
01:23:52and many more
01:23:53in this exciting
01:23:54head-to-head competition.
01:23:55I'm ready.
01:23:56Ready?
01:23:57Okay.
01:23:58Don't forget,
01:23:59just let them have it.
01:24:00Here we go,
01:24:01$20 on the nose.
01:24:02Come on, baby.
01:24:03That's Celebrity Challenge
01:24:04of the Sexes,
01:24:05tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern.
01:24:06It was late
01:24:15in the fourth quarter
01:24:16in Chicago's
01:24:17Soldier Field.
01:24:18For the afternoon,
01:24:19Walter Payton
01:24:20had gained
01:24:21217 yards
01:24:22on 37 carries.
01:24:23Bob Avellini
01:24:24bent down
01:24:25in the huddle
01:24:26and called 34's
01:24:27number again,
01:24:28got a block,
01:24:29jumped over
01:24:30a would-be tackler,
01:24:31broke loose
01:24:32down the right
01:24:33sideline,
01:24:34and before he was
01:24:35stopped,
01:24:36he had gained
01:24:3758 yards,
01:24:38and suddenly,
01:24:39O.J. Simpson's
01:24:40record was in jeopardy.
01:24:41And on this play,
01:24:42Walter Payton
01:24:43made it 275 yards
01:24:44in a single game,
01:24:45a new record.
01:24:46Now,
01:24:47for a single season,
01:24:48the record, of course,
01:24:49is held by the Jews
01:24:50and O.J.'s
01:24:512003 is in jeopardy.
01:24:52After 10 games,
01:24:53Walter Payton
01:24:54leads Simpson.
01:24:55If you compare
01:24:56Simpson's
01:24:57record-breaking year
01:24:58with this season
01:24:59by Payton,
01:25:00who still has
01:25:01four games to go,
01:25:02including Thursday's
01:25:03game on CBS
01:25:04Chicago in Detroit.
01:25:05Irv Cross,
01:25:06how about Cleveland
01:25:07and the New York Giants?
01:25:08We didn't have
01:25:09anybody running like that.
01:25:10It was a pretty
01:25:11exciting game,
01:25:12though, Vint.
01:25:13The Cleveland Browns
01:25:14came into the
01:25:15Meadowlands
01:25:16and defeated the Giants
01:25:17by a score of 21-7.
01:25:18They did it in
01:25:19typical Cleveland fashion.
01:25:20Now,
01:25:21this is a
01:25:22sequence of play,
01:25:23but right here
01:25:24in this sequence
01:25:25of play,
01:25:26Coleman hunts
01:25:27down to Bobby Hammond.
01:25:28Bobby Hammond,
01:25:29by the way,
01:25:30had a tremendous
01:25:31day.
01:25:32Here he makes
01:25:33a nifty return
01:25:34down to the 45-yard line,
01:25:35and Goldstein
