00:00:00The wads of A's and we are underway, it goes over Kevin William's head, out of the back of the end zone, touchdown, and Troy Aikman and the Dallas Cowboys will come on offense for the first time.

00:00:11Aikman, as Pat said, yet to be shot. Three touchdowns, one interception and wins over the New York Giants on a Monday night and then last week against Denver back at Texas Stadium.

00:00:22And he will run behind a huge offensive line.

00:00:25And Vern, I think early in the game that this is an important defensive series for the Minnesota Vikings.

00:00:31Jack Del Rio said to us yesterday, my dream, my vision of this game was to have a three and out. This is an important early defensive series.

00:00:42Watch Esther Attua, 98, at the no tackle spot defensively. Here's the handoff, it's hit behind the line.

00:00:50Andrew Smith loses right edge and McDaniel leads the defensive charge.

00:00:54Just the kind of start you want.

00:00:57Yeah, the Vikings must make this a fourth quarter game. And the way you do that, you stay in it against the Cowboys in the first quarter.

00:01:06Number 58 is Ed McDaniel. He is the backside linebacker. He should make a lot of tackles.

00:01:11Just going to blow right through Daryl Johnson. And that's the start, the defense won.

00:01:17To give you an idea of how difficult the pass facing Minnesota is, the Cowboys have had the ball 21 times this year.

00:01:23Only once have they been held with three downs and a punt.

00:01:298-12. Got him. First sack of the season. Roy Barker.

00:01:41Yeah, they're still trying to fight for that three and out, believe me.

00:01:55But you spend so much time worrying about John Randall, there's some other guys that can put some pressure on the quarterback as well.

00:02:01Number 92, Roy Barker, has had a big start to the season in rushing the pass through and stopping the run.

00:02:11Three wide receivers. Third and 20. Aikman lobs it to Andrew Smith.

00:02:19Harlan Barnett gets him. Three and out for Minnesota.

00:02:26You know, Vern, that's good defense. The Cowboys coming into this game only had five negative plays in their first two games.

00:02:33And they had two in that series. So Tony Dungy's defense set the exact tone they wanted to get done early in this game.

00:02:42John Jett is on the punt. There's Tony Dungy.

00:02:48Defensive coordinator extraordinaire, at least for the moment.

00:02:56That's a shank you very much.

00:03:00It's just a cowboy roll, however. It does go out of bounds near the 48-yard line.

00:03:07So for John Jett, a poor punt, but a little bit of a break at the end of it. 37 yards, including about 15 on the roll.

00:03:1538-year-old Warren Moon. Two touchdowns, one interception. Going with more high-percentage passes this year.

00:03:23They want to cut down on the interceptions, but he said to us yesterday, Vern, that we have to play a perfect game to beat these Cowboys.

00:03:41Robert Smith, the long setback. Here's the long pass to Jake Reed. It's behind him.

00:03:47Arguing for offensive pass interference. It'll go for an incomplete pass.

00:03:54Jake Reed had 85 catches last year. Robert Smith, with 111 yards, last week surpassed his season total for 1994.

00:04:03And up front, Todd Stusie and Corey Stringer. A second-year tackle and a rookie tackle.

00:04:09They're going to be tested heavily tonight. With Haley and Talbert coming at them.

00:04:19Charles Evans stays in the backfield. He's the lead blocker for Robert Smith, who squeezes yardage of the right tackle.

00:04:26Corey Stringer moves the pile, and they cross the 50 to the 47-yard line.

00:04:31Defensively for the Cowboys, familiar names now. Talbert and Haley at the defensive ends. Maryland and Leon lead at the tackles.

00:04:39Robert Jones, a resuscitated career at the middle linebacker spot.

00:04:43Aaron Smith, a holdout. And Godfrey Miles is occupying his spot.

00:04:47And this may be the weak part of the Cowboys' defensive unit, if there is one.

00:04:57Third down. Shotgun. Tied off Ampley. First down, Minnesota at the Cowboy 41.

00:05:03What a lead block by Randall McDaniel. I mean, you know, the defense did their job. They forced a three and out the punt.

00:05:10They got good field position. And then that first third down, it's kind of a change-up play.

00:05:16It's a passing down. Number 64 is Randall McDaniel. What can lead the play here?

00:05:22Ampley is more of a receiver than a runner. McDaniel dominates his guy.

00:05:27Ampley follows that block, and they pick up a first down. So kind of a change-up call on third and five.

00:05:33First and ten, McDaniel back in his spot. Now they're going to reset the game clock. Or the play clock, rather.

00:05:42Our referee tonight, by the way, is Ed Hockley.

00:05:48From the 42, first and ten, one time and seven. That's Chris Carter.

00:05:54Heading in motion, top of the screen. Robert Smith, he's bounced backwards as he crosses the 40 to the 38.

00:06:01Leon Lett got him. He got stunned. He was stunned. And Woodson got him, too.

00:06:06And Robert Smith is hurt.

00:06:09The one thing about Robert Smith, we've said there are not too many running backs like him.

00:06:14He is tall, he is angular, and he is a big target at 6'1".

00:06:19Most of the good running backs you see now, Berner, that 5'8", 5'9", 5'10", 200 pounds,

00:06:24he goes 6'1", although he looks taller than that, and he presents quite a target.

00:06:31Denny Green went way back in NFL history. To compare him to a running back, Lenny Moore,

00:06:36the outstanding running back of the Colts in the 50s.

00:06:39What about this Dallas defense? They have a lot of guys that can make up some ground quick.

00:06:44Oh, boy, and that is Darren Woodson, the strong saver.

00:06:47And that is the helmet in the stomach.

00:06:54Ouch.

00:06:55That's going to be ribs. And that's going to hurt. Time has been called.

00:07:03Robert Smith resting himself and his ribs on the sideline.

00:07:06No official medical report, but Scotty Graham has taken his place.

00:07:10It's good to see a bit of a smile for Robert Smith. And there's Darren Woodson.

00:07:14Darren Woodson has been a force. He's noted now for all the big plays he made a year ago,

00:07:18but he makes a lot of the little plays, like that one.

00:07:21Stuffing a hole when you had a big gain on your hands.

00:07:24Scotty Graham is in the backfield now. He started the season in a tailback.

00:07:28Robert Smith with a contract holdout in preseason.

00:07:32Here's a fake reverse that Scotty Graham has done as he gets down to the 37-yard line.

00:07:37That will bring up a third and a fat four or five.

00:07:41And it will bring in the nickel defense of the Dallas Cowboys.

00:07:45It would be a great lift for the Vikings if they could score first.

00:07:49Now, you know, we're still very early in this ballgame, but the thing about Dallas,

00:07:52they're the best front-running team, I think, in the NFL.

00:07:55And you play it at home, you'd love to get that first score,

00:07:58but to be able to do so, you have to convert this third down.

00:08:02The Cowboys are going to go with four down runners and seven defensive backs.

00:08:07Greg Trimble has come in. Bill Bates, the 13-year back in the middle.

00:08:15The kind of mistake Warren Moon said they could not have.

00:08:18And the snap was catchable. It was a little off.

00:08:21It was a little off to his left, but it was catchable.

00:08:24Should have been caught.

00:08:27Very good. Looks like he actually started backing up before the ball got there.

00:08:31And kind of short-armed on it.

00:09:14I mean, so the defense did their job, the special teams have done their job,

00:09:18and now the Cowboy offense for the second time has backed up.

00:09:59You know, look at Emmitt Smith, and he always seems to know where he wants to go,

00:10:08He doesn't see people, he feels them, and makes them miss.

00:10:18He gets a little bit of a thrust back from Michael Irvin,

00:10:21and is knocked out of bounds by Charles, missing number 21.

00:11:13And they have just dominated the first two games.

00:11:18And the Cowboys have moved out of trouble now.

00:11:21They're at their own 25, first and 10.

00:11:26Johnston comes wide right, Aikman will throw.

00:11:29Deep left side, Michael Irvin is short and in front of him.

00:11:35Defensively from Minnesota,

00:11:37a unit that held Barry Sanders to 35 yards last week.

00:11:41Barker, James Harris, Tuaolo, and John Randall,

00:11:46Thomas, Del Rio, and Ed McDaniel, the linebackers.

00:11:50And Barry Switzer feels if they can protect Troy Aikman,

00:11:53this secondary is vulnerable.

00:11:55Yeah, they think they can work on four,

00:11:58and they think they can work on both of those safeties.

00:12:36He is not.

00:12:37But he will slice you, and he will dice you,

00:12:39and he will beat you with a few passes.

00:13:11And that's the kind of confidence he has in Emmitt Smith on third and long

00:13:15to try to give him a chance to run for him.

00:13:17But Del Rio got smoked.

00:14:29I mean, he puts the hands out there, and Charles Haley gets a little ole,

00:14:34and he makes the stop.

00:14:36We chatted with Robert Smith yesterday, the young man from Ohio State,

00:14:39and talked about running right at Haley.

00:14:41He said, well, he's an exceptional pass defender.

00:14:45He's a good left defender.

00:14:48He's pretty good on that one.

00:14:54None will run.

00:14:55Whoa!

00:14:56Whoa, man!

00:14:59Cowboys have it.

00:15:02That's twice now Warren has lost the ball.

00:15:05Once in the shotgun formation,

00:15:07and this just comes right out of his hand without a problem.

00:15:09And mind you, this Minnesota team is not good enough to win tonight

00:15:15by making mistakes.

00:15:16They must play an error-free game.

00:15:19And this is their first significant error of the evening.

00:15:22I mean, that's just losing the handle.

00:15:27Again, they're not a – the Vikings are an average football team.

00:15:31They're not a dominant team.

00:15:32And to stay with the Cowboys, you can't turn it over.

00:15:36Unfortunately, that's going to make its way to the football follies.

00:16:20The inside receiver ties up the free safety.

00:16:25Michael Irvin makes a great adjustment to the ball in the air,

00:16:28and they add the touchdown.

00:16:32Michael Irvin is tied in a number of 100-yard receiving days for the Cowboys with 26.

00:16:38Last week, he came six yards short of holding the record by himself.

00:16:42He wants to get it tonight.

00:16:44Whoa, whoa, whoa.

00:16:45Wow.

00:16:46Was that a bad speech?

00:16:48That was awful.

00:16:50That looked like the Kansas City-Oakland game this afternoon.

00:16:53Well, they felt if they could protect Troy Aikman,

00:16:56they could work on these corners and safeties.

00:16:59And you get Michael Irvin in the first post pattern of the evening,

00:17:02a terrific adjustment when the ball is in the air.

00:17:05He owns it.

00:17:08The Cowboys were perfect in what they call the red zone.

00:17:10That's the area inside the 28 of 8.

00:17:13Well, make it 9 of 9.

00:17:15That's perfection of the highest order.

00:17:17They are just so hard to stop.

00:17:20It's kind of like balancing the federal budget.

00:17:23It's easy to talk about but real hard to do.

00:17:25It's easier for you to talk about than some of us.

00:18:18The offense didn't capitalize on good field position.

00:18:20And now Warren Moon hasn't really gotten the rhythm of this thing.

00:18:25And now they're battling, battling that Dallas thing that everybody seems to have this year.

00:19:22Boy, I tell you, these defensive backs are popping Robert Smith.

00:19:29And think about these Cowboys.

00:19:31You can't run outside on these guys.

00:19:33I don't believe it.

00:19:34They are just too quick on defense.

00:19:35He pops it outside because of some inside penetration, some very quick penetration.

00:19:40I think it was Shantae Carver.

00:19:42And he forces them outside.

00:19:43But they have so much speed when Haley and those defensive backs don't have a chance.

00:19:58Del Rio was talking about what happens when you get behind Dallas.

00:20:01He said all of a sudden you're in awe of what they're doing.

00:20:04And trying to play catch-up against these guys is just darn near impossible.

00:20:07You know, as we watch Charles Haley, we talked about on the pregame show,

00:20:10everybody's making a big thing about signing Deion Sanders.

00:20:13But I think the fact that Charles Haley decided not to retire is as equally a large story

00:20:19as they signing Deion Sanders.

00:20:21They're a dominant defense with Charles Haley, but not without him.

00:20:25I thought we were going to go the whole night without mentioning him.

00:20:28Well, I'm sorry.

00:20:29I'm sorry.

00:20:30It was in the context of Charles Haley.

00:20:32I understand.

00:20:33So you're forgiven.

00:20:34Okay.

00:21:41Lee, who spent two years with the San Francisco 49ers,

00:21:44a career high of 45 receptions last year,

00:21:48in this pass-happy offense.

00:21:50They want to reduce the number of passes this year, Pat.

00:21:52They threw, what, nearly 600.

00:21:54Yeah, 40 a game, and one of the things they said,

00:21:57we want control passes and we don't want the turnover.

00:21:59We don't want Warren Moon throwing as many interceptions as he did a year ago.

00:22:11Danny Smith is a block, but Smith turns the corner.

00:22:38Well, he was a member of the Ohio State 4-by-400-meter relay team

00:22:43that had the fastest time in the world in 1993.

00:22:54Again, the long, loping stride, and then again, you think you have the angle?

00:22:58I mean, it looks like Woodson thought he had the angle and then he outran him.

00:23:01I mean, that's what he does.

00:23:03He fools you with his speed.

00:23:49But remember we also said that this is where you got to have a guy like Chris Carter come up and make a play.

00:25:23So, earlier this week, they grabbed Mike Sachs and they taped him.
