00:00:00For Troy Aikman, last week's setback proved to be very costly.
00:00:09But that setback was only temporary as he returns to the starting lineup.
00:00:15Quarterback Brett Favre has brought smiles to Green Bay, still looking to become among the elite.
00:00:21The Packers have taken a major step forward with the league's number one defense.
00:00:26A defense which will be severely tested today in Texas.
00:00:36A brilliant day in Texas as you look at legendary Texas Stadium.
00:00:40Inside, the Packers come to town to face the Cowboys.
00:00:45A battle of first place teams and somehow that has a strange sound to it.
00:00:51John, first place teams battling each other.
00:00:54As I said, that has a sort of a strange ring to it.
00:00:57What do you think it's going to take really to settle this contest?
00:01:00I think it's going to be a line play.
00:01:02I love these kind of games where we can talk about the quarterbacks and the running backs and the great wide receivers.
00:01:08But it's all going to boil down to how the lines do.
00:01:11We heard Troy Aikman say in the pregame show that he can't run.
00:01:14And if he gets any pressure on him, he's not going to be in the game.
00:01:17So that offensive line of the Cowboys has to block today like they've never blocked before.
00:01:22When I was talking with the Packers and Mike Holmgren yesterday, I got the feeling, and I'm sure you did too,
00:01:27that they feel better about themselves, perhaps more confident than they have in a long time.
00:01:31Well, they do feel very confident.
00:01:33Of course, part of it is they remember that they were beaten by this team on Thanksgiving Day.
00:01:37But the thing that they feel confident about is that they scored four touchdowns against them.
00:01:41But again, their offensive line has to be able to handle that defensive line.
00:01:46Now, Charles Haley may not play for the Cowboys.
00:01:48If he doesn't play today, then that's going to be a lot easier game for the Green Bay Packers.
00:01:53They have to be able to run a little, but they have to be able to protect Brett Favre on offense.
00:01:58Then on defense, they have to do something to control Emmitt Smith.
00:02:03So coming up, it's the Green Bay Packers and the Dallas Cowboys from Texas Stadium.
00:02:07And John and I will be back for the opening kickoff
00:02:10when Fox NFL Sunday continues after these messages from your local station.
00:02:19This is Fox NFL Sunday.
00:02:21And kickoff, Craig Hendrick will kick off,
00:02:24although Chris Jacky is available for the Packers.
00:02:27Back deep, Kevin Williams and Brock Marion for the Cowboys.
00:02:30Hendrick, line, drive, kick.
00:02:35Bounces past Kevin Williams out of the end zone.
00:02:38The Cowboys will take over at their own 20.
00:02:42Troy Aikman will open at quarterback.
00:02:44Somewhat of a miracle.
00:02:46After the injury last week in Washington.
00:02:49In front of him, the biggest, perhaps the best, offensive line in the NFL.
00:02:542 and 8, Newton Donaldson, Larry Allen and Eric Williams.
00:03:00In the backfield with Aikman, Emmitt Smith, Darrell Johnson,
00:03:03Kevin Williams and Michael Irvin.
00:03:05Wide and Jay Novacek, the tight end.
00:03:09Irvin comes wide right from the 20 with Aikman at quarterback.
00:03:15The Cowboys will go to work.
00:03:20Emmitt Smith.
00:03:23Packer pursuit is excellent.
00:03:26Fred Strickland out to make the hit.
00:03:28Let's look at the Packer defense.
00:03:29Number one in the NFL.
00:03:31Sean Jones, Yurkovich, Gabe Wilkins and Reggie White, the front four.
00:03:37The three linebackers, Koonce Strickland in the middle and Wayne Simmons.
00:03:42Secondary, bigger, stronger this year.
00:03:45Evans, Teague, Butler and Newsom.
00:03:492nd and 11.
00:03:51Emmitt Smith lost a yard.
00:03:56Aikman to Emmitt Smith.
00:04:02A gain of about 8.
00:04:03Strickland with a stop.
00:04:07That's the thing about Emmitt Smith.
00:04:09He can do it running or he can do it catching.
00:04:12Here's going to be one of the biggest matchups of the day, Pat.
00:04:15You got Reggie White going against Eric Williams,
00:04:18one of the best defensive linemen in the game
00:04:21and one of the best offensive linemen in the game.
00:04:23You see that?
00:04:24He tried to use his club on Eric Williams and he didn't budge, Big Eric.
00:04:29Three wide receivers.
00:04:33That's Novacek, the move man.
00:04:37Aikman gets to Smith.
00:04:39Not enough for the first down as Reggie White saw it coming.
00:04:44And that's the guy that you got to get blocked
00:04:46wherever you're going to run the ball.
00:04:48Again, as you say, here's Reggie.
00:04:50He's going to see that thing.
00:04:51It's an inside run.
00:04:52He starts to the outside and then instead of going up the field,
00:04:55he comes right down the line of scrimmage.
00:04:58And when Reggie gets his hands on you, you are down
00:05:01and the next thing you need is your punt team.
00:05:04John Jets, the punter, hasn't had a lot of activity this year.
00:05:09Charles Jordan back deep for the Packers.
00:05:17Jet, good kick.
00:05:21Jordan at the 22.
00:05:23Jets, one man.
00:05:27The Cowboys covered quickly.
00:05:29Dale Hellestray down under the kick.
00:05:32He was also the snapper.
00:05:36Jordan, it appears, will stay in the game.
00:05:39A 50-yard punt, an 8-yard return.
00:05:41Brett Favres, the Packer quarterback.
00:05:44Fifth year from Southern Mississippi.
00:05:46In front of him, Rutgers, Taylor, Winters, Galbraith, and Earl Dotson.
00:05:51Edgar Bennett's the runner.
00:05:53William Henderson, Morgan, Brooks, Shimura.
00:05:57They open with four wide receivers.
00:06:00And no tight end.
00:06:02I wouldn't be surprised if they would run from this formation.
00:06:06Bennett, nothing.
00:06:09The Cowboys weren't surprised either that they ran from that formation.
00:06:13Charles Haley is not starting.
00:06:15That was Russell Maryland who made the tackle.
00:06:18Haley has been replaced by Shantae Carver.
00:06:23Let Maryland and Tolbert, the rest of the defensive line,
00:06:26The linebackers, Miles, Jones, and Dixon-Edwards.
00:06:29And the secondary, Brown, Brock-Mary, and Darren Woodson-Clayton-Holmes.
00:06:35Second and ten.
00:06:46Far to throw it.
00:06:50To Anthony Morgan.
00:06:52About eight.
00:06:53I tell you, that's going to be a big thing if Charles Haley doesn't play.
00:06:57For a couple reasons.
00:06:58One, he's probably the best pass rusher in football.
00:07:02But two, the Packers, if Charles Haley is in there,
00:07:06they're going to double him every time.
00:07:08Either with a tight end or a running back.
00:07:10Now, if Haley's not in there,
00:07:11that means they can get another guy out in the pass pattern.
00:07:14Either that running back or tight end that was going to help block Charles Haley.
00:07:19Four wide receivers again.
00:07:21One, two.
00:07:27Bennett.
00:07:29Close to a first down.
00:07:31He might have it.
00:07:32And maybe not.
00:07:34And that's the thing that Barry Switzer has to think about.
00:07:37You know, Charles Haley didn't practice during the week.
00:07:40He said last week, if you don't practice, you're not going to play.
00:07:44He felt that his defensive line didn't play well last week.
00:07:49I still think you don't put Charles Haley in that group.
00:07:52To me, he's the best.
00:07:54And he has to be out there in the field
00:07:56because he raises havoc like no one raises havoc.
00:07:59He doesn't look as if he's going to participate.
00:08:02Well, I saw him before.
00:08:03He came by the bus before the game.
00:08:05And he said, I may not play at all today.
00:08:08Well, any time you see a guy with his thumbs hooked in his belt,
00:08:11you figure he's not going to play.
00:08:13And he doesn't have either his hat on his head or in his hand.
00:08:16That's another indicator.
00:08:21First and ten Packers.
00:08:24Just shy of the Dallas of the Packer 40.
00:08:28Mike Holmgren, of course, has a script.
00:08:31We talked to him last night just before he scripted
00:08:34his first 15 plays of this game.
00:08:39One setback, three wide receivers.
00:08:41Favre gives to Bennett.
00:08:45And here Bennett gets about three yards.
00:08:47See what the Packers are trying to do is get in passing formations
00:08:51like that formation, three wide receivers,
00:08:53earlier four wide receivers, and run from passing formations.
00:08:58And then go to two tight ends or tighter formations
00:09:01that are usually running formations
00:09:03and pass from those formations.
00:09:05Now they go with two tight ends.
00:09:06And they figure, at least they all told us yesterday,
00:09:10one thing we've got to be able to do is run the ball.
00:09:13Everybody says that.
00:09:14But I would think they'll pass from this formation.
00:09:17Favre back to throw it.
00:09:20Pass is caught by Anthony Morgan.
00:09:23And that'll be enough for a first down for Green Bay.
00:09:26And that's why they want to work.
00:09:29Excuse me, John. Go ahead.
00:09:31I was just saying they want to work out here on Clayton Holmes.
00:09:33He's the guy that's been having problems there.
00:09:35And you can see here he gives a pretty big cushion.
00:09:38He's off about five or six yards.
00:09:40Morgan breaks.
00:09:41And he still has that five-yard cushion on Clayton Holmes.
00:09:45Brett Favre's got a great arm.
00:09:47He can really fire it.
00:09:49And he likes to fire it.
00:09:50You know, I think that he would rather throw a real hard,
00:09:53incomplete pass that goes into the stands
00:09:56than sometimes a real little soft completion.
00:09:59There's Deion Sanders looking on.
00:10:03Favre to Bennett.
00:10:08Stopped finally by Robert Jones.
00:10:10But good yardage.
00:10:13See, that's the advantage of what Mike Holmgren is doing here,
00:10:16is scripting those first 15 plays,
00:10:19is that, one, he can give them a lot of formations early
00:10:22and see the adjustments.
00:10:24Two, he can make all his decisions on the first 15 plays
00:10:27that he's going to call, so that removes all the anxiety.
00:10:30And then, three, all the players know what they're going to do,
00:10:33and they feel pretty confident about this first 15 plays.
00:10:36And he tries to keep it balanced.
00:10:38He doesn't always get that accomplished,
00:10:40but he tries for balance.
00:10:44William Henderson, the ball carrier.
00:10:47Nothing doing.
00:10:48Shante Carver, in place of Haley, out to make the stop.
00:10:53That play didn't have a chance.
00:10:55You see, Shante Carver is here.
00:10:57He's going to get some penetration here.
00:10:59And any time you get in the backfield on defense,
00:11:02any time you get on their side of the line of scrimmage,
00:11:05right there, then they don't have a chance to run to that side.
00:11:09There's no way that play had a chance.
00:11:13Brings up third and about six.
00:11:16Four wide receivers again for Green Bay.
00:11:21Far back to throw it.
00:11:23Pumps.
00:11:25Behind Brooks.
00:11:27And he was open.
00:11:29That would have been a big play.
00:11:31Bill Bates was on him, but Brooks had Bill Bates beaten
00:11:34by a couple of steps.
00:11:36And Favre just didn't get it to him.
00:11:40Here's a guy you wonder, Bill Bates.
00:11:42It seems like every time we've done a cowboy game,
00:11:45Bill Bates has been down there, running down on kicks,
00:11:48playing on nickel.
00:11:50Always gets bigger and stronger and faster every year as he gets older.
00:11:54He says.
00:11:56The Packers only had ten guys out there on their punt coverage team.
00:12:00They just sent in the 11th.
00:12:02Craig Hendrick back to punt.
00:12:05Kevin Williams deep for the Cowboys.
00:12:08Hendrick got the high kick that he wanted.
00:12:10Just depends on the bounce.
00:12:12Green Bay bounce.
00:12:13And they've down it inside the five.
00:12:15Marcus Wilson.
00:12:18Down to down it.
00:12:19The Cowboys start deep in their own territory.
00:12:24Nothing, nothing score.
00:12:25First quarter.
00:12:28Brought to you by Chrysler and the all-new Chrysler Town and Country
00:12:31minivan, the ultimate.
00:12:33By the NASDAQ stock market, the stock market for the next hundred years.
00:12:37And by Pizza Hut, home of stuffed crust pizza.
00:12:44Back in Texas.
00:12:47Get a look at some of the neighboring spreads.
00:12:52Dallas ball at their own four-yard line, first and ten.
00:12:56Emmitt Smith standing about five yards deep in the end zone.
00:12:59Smith in the quarterback.
00:13:01No score yet.
00:13:05Emmitt behind Darryl Johnston.
00:13:07Gets a little room out to about the nine.
00:13:10You know, one of the things Reggie White was saying last night that the
00:13:13Green Bay Packers want to do is they want to push the Cowboy offensive line
00:13:17backward.
00:13:19And I thought, I mean, I kind of laughed to myself.
00:13:21I didn't laugh to Reggie.
00:13:22I said, well, you're not going to be able to do that.
00:13:23And he just did it.
00:13:24He just took Eric Williams to running.
00:13:26This is what they're doing.
00:13:27They're playing like short yardage.
00:13:29Now watch him.
00:13:30He's just going to go in here and just go square.
00:13:32And you see him just get up and just push him right into the backfield
00:13:35that Emmitt Smith had to run around Eric Williams.
00:13:39Which Emmitt can't do.
00:13:41Emmitt again.
00:13:43Not much.
00:13:45Right now for a McDonald's game break, let's return to James Brown
00:13:49in the Hollywood Studio.
00:13:51Pat, we talked about the Eagles' ground game being six in the NFL.
00:13:54The reason why, Ricky Waters and this Charlie Garner,
00:13:5755 yards to pay dirt.
00:13:59That on the opening series for the Eagles.
00:14:01They lead the skin, 7-0.
00:14:03Back to Dallas, Pat and John.
00:14:07No score at Texas Stadium.
00:14:09The Packers and the Cowboys, third and sixth, three wide receivers.
00:14:16Aikman says he can't back out from under center.
00:14:18He can turn sideways, which he does.
00:14:25Not enough for a first down.
00:14:26Kevin Williams made the reception.
00:14:29He caught the pass, but not enough.
00:14:32And Aikman's upset and so is Kevin Williams.
00:14:34He's probably upset at Kevin Williams for not running a pass batter deep enough
00:14:38or for himself and not finding someone else that was open deep enough.
00:14:44I think the big thing is, is he got through these first couple series
00:14:47and the calf injury is holding up.
00:14:50But he hasn't been forced out of the pocket yet either.
00:14:53He says he can't run.
00:14:55John Jett has spotted one time already.
00:15:04Another good kick for Jett.
00:15:06Chases Jordan all the way back to the 32-yard line of Green Bay.
00:15:10And he's hustled out of bounds in front of the Packer bench.
00:15:16Nothing, nothing.
00:15:18The score at Texas Stadium as the sun starts to take over the field.
00:15:25And we have six minutes and three seconds left in the first quarter.
00:15:31Cowboys have a following, so do the Packers.
00:15:34And if it gets much warmer, it might be down the side of his head.
00:15:40Well, you know, you wonder about these guys are wearing these cheese hats.
00:15:44When you're in Green Bay, you know that, you know, you expect to see them a lot,
00:15:48but you don't expect to see them in Dallas.
00:15:50I mean, how do you bring them from Wisconsin here?
00:15:53Favre gets it outside to Brooks.
00:15:57Hit by Darren Woodson.
00:16:00Because probably when they're in Wisconsin, you know, they wear those things.
00:16:04You know, you just get up in the morning, you say,
00:16:06well, I think I'm going to wear some cheese on my head.
00:16:08Well, it won't melt.
00:16:09Yeah, you just kind of go to the game.
00:16:11But when you have to go to the game in Dallas, then someone has to pack the cheese.
00:16:16And you might turn out to be fondue.
00:16:20Who packed the cheese?
00:16:21Second and six.
00:16:27Edgar Bennett.
00:16:29Cross midfield into Cowboy territory.
00:16:32A pickup of about three.
00:16:33Hit by Robert Jones.
00:16:35Still no Charles Haley.
00:16:37You know, just looking at Charles Haley on the sideline and just, you know,
00:16:41if you can read body language at all, I'm not saying that I can't,
00:16:44but that body language says that he's not going to play today
00:16:47or he's not ready to play now or he's not going to play in this first half anyway.
00:16:52Maybe there'll be some kind of halftime adjustment.
00:16:54I get that impression.
00:16:56But it's a lot easier playing the Cowboy defense when Charles Haley's on the sideline.
00:17:01Third down.
00:17:05Far of a throw.
00:17:07Brooks again.
00:17:10First down, Green Bay.
00:17:14That's the Packers' new go-to guy, Robert Brooks.
00:17:17And I think that Brett Favre right now in football can throw this pattern where he runs
00:17:23and, you see, Brooks just runs a short out and he shoots it.
00:17:27And, you see, Brooks just runs a short out and he should be getting a block there
00:17:31and it could have been a bigger play, but Favre ran a sprint out play.
00:17:35And watch him just take off now.
00:17:37This is going to be a sprint out.
00:17:38He's going to sprint out to the right.
00:17:39See him?
00:17:40He just takes off.
00:17:41And I think that he could throw on the run better than any quarterback in the game today.
00:17:45Four wide receivers for the Packers again.
00:17:48Bennett gets the carry and gets not very far.
00:17:52Russell Merrill saw that one coming.
00:17:55That's what we talked about, controlling the line of scrimmage.
00:17:58Control the line of scrimmage means keeping those guys back on their side.
00:18:01You can't allow penetration.
00:18:03Watch the penetration that Russell Merrill gets.
00:18:06Of course, they're going to try and trap it.
00:18:07The center tries to block back on him.
00:18:10There's no way that he is going to get him.
00:18:13Too quick.
00:18:14Now, Frank Winters is not going to block back on Russell Merrill when his guard pulls.
00:18:19Not going to cut him off.
00:18:22He can stay out there a long time trying to do that.
00:18:24I think that's one of those plays.
00:18:26Are they still in the script?
00:18:27If they're still in the script, I'd cross that one out.
00:18:30Favre.
00:18:32Pass is picked off by Godfrey Miles.
00:18:35Miles gets it to midfield.
00:18:37He saw that one coming, too.
00:18:39And Favre had to make that tackle or Godfrey Miles would still be running.
00:18:43This woke up this crowd.
00:18:45This crowd was quiet until this play.
00:18:49336 left in the first.
00:18:51The Cowboys ball at midfield.
00:18:53Here's Godfrey Miles right here.
00:18:55You see, he's just playing zone defense.
00:18:57He's starting to the outside.
00:18:59Favre was trying to run a slant.
00:19:01Godfrey Miles started back, and then he went, and he's going to get in that lane.
00:19:06You see, he gets in the lane between Favre and the receiver, and Favre throws it right to him.
00:19:12Favre makes the tackle, and watch his reaction.
00:19:21Miles' interception gives the Cowboys the ball in good shape.
00:19:25Close to midfield.
00:19:26Novacek was the man in motion.
00:19:28Aikman back to throw it.
00:19:33Flag on the play.
00:19:35Irvin made the reception.
00:19:38One thing last night all the Packers were talking about is you can't have turnovers when you play the Cowboys.
00:19:44Of course, they're the first one to have a turnover.
00:19:48They usually, you know, when momentum starts and bad things start going against you,
00:19:54they get a turnover, then in the first play, now they get a penalty against them.
00:19:59Red Cashin.
00:20:00Face mask, number 36 on the defense, five yards, still first down.
00:20:06Nobody says first down like Red.
00:20:08And he always says it better for the home team.
00:20:12There's the face mask right there, Leroy Butler grabbing the face mask.
00:20:16And again, it was just one of the five-yard varieties.
00:20:19The 15-yard variety is when you hold on, twist or turn.
00:20:23The five-yard variety is where you just kind of incidentally do it.
00:20:28They got about first and nothing.
00:20:32First down, it looks like about a yard to go.
00:20:38Aikman back to throw.
00:20:40Gets it to Irvin.
00:20:44Irvin does a little dance.
00:20:46Doug Evan.
00:20:49Right now for a game break, let's return to James Brown in our Hollywood studio.
00:20:53Hey, Pat, this is what Dave Wonstad's been looking for, the arm of Eric Kramer
00:20:57and the deep threat, Curtis Conway, 41-yard hookup, draped by Tyrone Poole,
00:21:02but it's a score, 7-0 Chicago.
00:21:04Back to Pat and John.
00:21:08Nothing-nothing score at Texas Stadium and Irving.
00:21:13Two tight ends for the Cowboys.
00:21:16Novacek lined up left, Emmitt Smith going in that direction
00:21:21and not finding much room.
00:21:27That was a good play on that first down.
00:21:30They had first and a yard.
00:21:32And you know the way Ernie Zampezi, the offensive coordinator of the Cowboys,
00:21:35when he calls plays, he's not just going to run the ball and get a first down.
00:21:38He goes play pass, gets the linebackers up in there,
00:21:41which I was surprised they'd even go for,
00:21:43and then throws the ball to Michael Irvin.
00:21:45There's Ernie right here.
00:21:47He's got the old pens going in the right hand to kind of calm himself down.
00:21:50But I'm surprised that he didn't go for the deep one there.
00:21:53Me too.
00:21:54Because, you know, first and a yard is a free play.
00:21:56Second and eight.
00:21:58Aikman back.
00:22:00Just as he let it go, the pass is complete.
00:22:04To Novacek.
00:22:06Aikman got up slowly, but he got up.
00:22:08And that was Sean Jones.
00:22:10He went right by Mark Toonay.
00:22:12Sean Jones is right up here.
00:22:14So it's going to be pressure from Troy Aikman's backside.
00:22:17You see Mark Toonay, 71, trying to block him.
00:22:20He just goes right by him.
00:22:22Hits Troy right as he throws the ball.
00:22:25Protection in the middle was pretty good.
00:22:27The protection on the other side was pretty good.
00:22:29But they didn't get Sean Jones.
00:22:31But Sean Jones didn't get Aikman before he got rid of the ball.
00:22:34First and ten.
00:22:36Aikman will throw again.
00:22:38Wields it outside to Novacek.
00:22:40Novacek, a gain of about eight.
00:22:42Knocked out of bounds by Evans.
00:22:45You watch Troy Aikman and you know that he has a good arm
00:22:48and he's strong and he's smooth and he's smart.
00:22:50But he's tough too.
00:22:53You know, to come back and the way he's done this,
00:22:56to know that he's just a target back there.
00:22:59He's just a sitting target.
00:23:00A sitting target.
00:23:01A sitting target, yeah.
00:23:03And those defensive ends are just taking a point right at where he's going to be
00:23:08and he just stands in there and flicks that ball out of there.
00:23:11He's hit every pass he's thrown.
00:23:13Emmitt Smith.
00:23:15Till about the two.
00:23:17That'll be a first down, first and goal from that point.
00:23:20Fred Strickland made the stop.
00:23:24Now the Packers said if you can't stop Emmitt Smith,
00:23:27if you can't stop the run, you can't stop anything.
00:23:30This big cowboy offensive line is starting to take over now.
00:23:34Larry Allen made a heck of a block
00:23:36and then Moose Johnston comes in and gets a good lead block.
00:23:41Larry Allen gets better and better.
00:23:47He's going to be one of the best guards in this league.
00:23:49Big Eric Williams just left a little early on that one.
00:23:54He had someplace he had to go.
00:23:57Before the snap, false start, number 79 on the offense, five yards, still first down.
00:24:05Watch this.
00:24:06You have to wait until the ball's snapped.
00:24:08Big Eric knows the snap count.
00:24:09He just forgot it.
00:24:11He had someplace to go.
00:24:12I have no idea where he's going unless he's going about three guys across
00:24:16to get that middle linebacker.
00:24:18That had to be what was going.
00:24:20Now this is pretty good to run behind.
00:24:21Look at this.
00:24:22That's like a three-quarter ton pickup.
00:24:25Plus.
00:24:261,500 pounds, that offensive line weight.
00:24:29Then you put Stone in there now.
00:24:31I think they're a ton.
00:24:34That's the end of the first quarter.
00:24:36No score, but the Cowboys inside the Packer Five.
00:24:44Sunday is brought to you by Dr. Pepper and your local Dr. Pepper bottler.
00:24:48Dr. Pepper is just what the doctor ordered.
00:24:56Nothing, nothing, score.
00:25:01First down, Cowboys at about the seventh.
00:25:05Aikman gives to Emmitt Smith, and he's hit behind the line of scrimmage.
00:25:11Darius Holland.
00:25:14He almost didn't keep him down long enough.
00:25:16I know, because only if the whistle blows.
00:25:19I mean, the guy's not down until the whistle blows.
00:25:22You can celebrate, but you can celebrate a little too soon sometimes.
00:25:26Holland is number 90.
00:25:28You see, again, he gets the penetration right there,
00:25:31and he gets him down there.
00:25:33Now his hand is down.
00:25:35His knees never did touch the ground.
00:25:38So you don't know it's when the whistle blows.
00:25:41The whistle shouldn't have blown because of the whistle blows,
00:25:44and that's probably what Holland heard.
00:25:45He probably heard the whistle blow.
00:25:47Maybe Aikman.
00:25:51No attack.
00:26:00Troy Aikman was perfect on this drive, five out of five.
00:26:06Hey, we talked about the line.
00:26:08No, the line has done its job.
00:26:11Other than Sean Jones hitting Troy Aikman that one time
00:26:14after he completed a pass, they've kept him pretty clean.
00:26:23Touchdown, Aikman to Novacek.
00:26:28Moneo for the extra point now.
00:26:30Novacek holding.
00:26:32Cowboys lead 7-0.
00:26:4014-13 left to play in the first half at Texas Stadium.
00:26:47Here's Jay Novacek.
00:26:49Leroy Butler would normally cover him.
00:26:51He's going to come on a blitz.
00:26:53George Teague has to come over to cover Novacek.
00:26:57He doesn't get proper position, and then he misses a tackle.
00:27:01See, here comes Teague.
00:27:02Novacek makes a move on him.
00:27:04Teague misses a tackle.
00:27:06Novacek scores.
00:27:07Did you see Emmitt Smith?
00:27:08He's the guy that picked up Butler on that blitz.
00:27:11And you can see by the lookdowns that the backers guessed wrong.
00:27:19Moneo's kick sails to Charles Jordan.
00:27:23Jordan to about the 26th.
00:27:28Don't forget, next week it's exciting NFL doubleheader action
00:27:31when the 49ers take on the Colts.
00:27:33The Colts, the Cowboys battle the Chargers plus other exciting regional action.
00:27:38All begins at noon Eastern, 9 a.m. Pacific.
00:27:40Check your local listings for the game and time in your area.
00:27:45John and I will be in San Diego.
00:27:50With the same Dallas Cowboys again next week.
00:27:54You know, it just shows what a turnover does, though.
00:27:56You know, the Packers were playing pretty well.
00:27:59They were moving the ball a little.
00:28:00They were stopping the Cowboys.
00:28:02Brett Favre throws that interception,
00:28:05and then the Cowboys just get the ball and go and score a touchdown with it.
00:28:09Well, that's another sign of a good team that can take advantage of turnovers.
00:28:12Here's Favre back to throw a screen pass coming.
00:28:14Leroy, Edgar Bennett.
00:28:19Bennett takes the screen pass, stopped, tripped up finally by Brock Marriott.
00:28:25Every coach tries to have some momentum changers,
00:28:28and one of these momentum changers is a screen pass.
00:28:31You see Edgar Bennett comes up, fakes like he's going to block.
00:28:34He gets his lineman out in front of him,
00:28:36his center and his guard out in front of him.
00:28:38They get a couple of blocks,
00:28:39and then they just screen the ball right down the sideline for a first down.
00:28:43But that's a good momentum changer.
00:28:45Mike Holmgren was saying yesterday he tries to put it in his script.
00:28:49He tries to put a screen.
00:28:50He tries to put a reverse.
00:28:52And he tries to keep balance otherwise as Leon Lett jumps.
00:28:58But that does take, you know, because what happens is defense comes out.
00:29:02They've just scored.
00:29:03They've had a turnover.
00:29:04They're all fired up.
00:29:11That's Leon Lett right here encroached before the snap.
00:29:14Of course, if it's after the snap, it wouldn't be encroachment, would it?
00:29:18No, it'd be fine.
00:29:19It'd be fine.
00:29:21That's kind of a –
00:29:22If it's too much after the snap, he won't be playing.
00:29:26Saying something twice that could be said once.
00:29:28First and five.
00:29:31Packers at their own 47.
00:29:40First down, it appears, Darren Woodson.
00:29:44Yeah, one of the things that Mike Holmgren talked about was having a balanced script.
00:29:49And we see here the first 15 plays, he ran eight and he passed seven.
00:29:54And he said that's what he would like to get.
00:29:56And then you kind of see how they're going to play the pass, what their coverages are,
00:30:00what their fronts are going to be with the run.
00:30:02You use different formations.
00:30:04And then on your second 15 plays, you try and make adjustments off that.
00:30:10First to 10, three wide receivers and a tight end one back.
00:30:14The one back gets the ball.
00:30:17And he's wrapped up by Tony Tobert.
00:30:21And right now, let's send you back to McDonald for McDonald's game break to Hollywood.
00:30:26Hey, Pat, a big weakness of Philadelphia's kick coverage.
00:30:28Take a look.
00:30:29Brian Mitchell, Jimmy Johnson said he'd have a big day.
00:30:32I think this qualifies.
00:30:3459-yard punt return, his sixth punt return for a score.
00:30:38All tied, less than two in the first.
00:30:40Back to Pat and John.
00:30:43Seven-nothing at Texas Stadium.
00:30:46Second and seven.
00:30:48Green Bay ball at the Dallas 43.
00:30:53Cowboys leading.
00:30:57Far betrothed.
00:31:00Incomplete.
00:31:01He looked to Brooks.
00:31:03He saw Leon Lett looking at him.
00:31:06Well, I think you don't have a lot of time with Leon Lett coming up the middle line.
00:31:10You look to the right, and I think Brooks was his secondary receiver on that.
00:31:15When you get big Leon Lett, who's one of the best pass rushers in the game, coming up the field on you,
00:31:20you can look once and maybe go to a second receiver, but you can't do much more than that.
00:31:25See, he looked to the right.
00:31:26Now he had to get rid of the ball or he was going to get decked.
00:31:28Right.
00:31:31Third down.
00:31:32They need seven for a first, and Favre will try to get it through.
00:31:36Goes to Brooks.
00:31:40Scott Case made the stop on Brooks.
00:31:44With Leon Lett coming up the middle, in fact, Leon Lett's going out of the game right now.
00:31:48One thing the Cowboys do is they rotate their defensive linemen.
00:31:53Without Leon Lett in there and without Charles Haley in there, those are their two best pass rushers.
00:32:00If I were the Packers and I was going to pass, I'd be doing it right now.
00:32:04They have Chad Hennings, the Cowboys.
00:32:06They have Chad Hennings and Russell Maryland inside at the tackles now.
00:32:10Scott Case is in his safety.
00:32:13Favre, Brooks, incomplete, flagged down.
00:32:20Clayton Holmes chasing Robert Brooks.
00:32:32Clayton Holmes was in his zone, and again, he was bumping Robert Brooks,
00:32:36and you can bump him for five yards, but not after five.
00:32:40Number 47 by the defense, five yards, first down.
00:32:50They're the only two guys in the sunlight right here, so you can see him coming down.
00:32:55You see him.
00:32:56He does a stop and then a go, and then Clayton Holmes hit him right there,
00:33:01and that was after five yards, but Clayton Holmes, I'll say this thing for him,
00:33:05he didn't bite on the stop, did he?
00:33:08He started to come up a little, and then he took a bump where you can't have a bump.
00:33:12First down, Packers.
00:33:15The Dallas 29, Favre changing the play.
00:33:24Outside Brooks.
00:33:27Cut quickly by Holmes.
00:33:29I'm surprised that that was what he changed it to,
00:33:31because what he saw out here was he saw Clayton Holmes out here.
00:33:35Right here you see him.
00:33:36He's kind of up tight here on Brooks, so that's what he sees,
00:33:39but I'm surprised he audibilized to just a short pattern.
00:33:43I'm surprised that if you're going to take advantage of him being out there
00:33:47or run something that you're going to get something.
00:33:51I'll tell you, Robert Brooks did take a shot right here.
00:33:53Watch this.
00:33:54He has that right leg planted,
00:33:57and that knee joint almost went where it's not supposed to go.
00:34:01Could be setting up something.
00:34:08Incomplete again intended for Brooks.
00:34:11Scott Case to Brock Marion.
00:34:14Yeah, Scott Case is in there for Darren Woodson.
00:34:17I wonder if Woodson is injured.
00:34:19Woodson's coming back now, I guess,
00:34:21and you see the coverage here.
00:34:23Brock Marion is now playing the strong safety.
00:34:26You see Clayton Holmes going back here.
00:34:28They're just zoning this four straight across,
00:34:31and he just throws a ball in there pretty good.
00:34:33Woodson's playing like a linebacker.
00:34:38Four wide receivers.
00:34:45Brooks in motion.
00:34:46Far back to throw again.
00:34:48Chased by left.
00:34:50That pass was set up pretty well.
00:34:52Intended for Bennett, who dropped it.
00:34:55Maybe it's good to give Leon a lot of rest now,
00:34:57and then they let him go in and rest.
00:34:59The Packers had time on the third down play.
00:35:02On the second down play, they bring Leon Lett back in
00:35:05for the third down play,
00:35:06and Brett Favre didn't have any time again.
00:35:08So it's fourth down, and Chris Jackie comes on.
00:35:12Brett Favre's thinking that Aaron Taylor
00:35:14better start blocking Leon Lett on these passing plays.
00:35:20Jackie's been hurt.
00:35:22The week off did him a world of good.
00:35:26His first field goal attempt this season.
00:35:32And it is true.
00:35:35The Packers get on the board.
00:35:3710-06 left in the second quarter.
00:35:4042-yard field goal by Jackie at 7-3.
00:35:46Sunday is brought to you by Porsche.
00:35:48No substitute.
00:35:49By Dr. Pepper and your local Dr. Pepper bottler.
00:35:52Dr. Pepper is just what the doctor ordered.
00:35:54And by Aflac, ensuring over 38 million people worldwide.
00:36:02Good-looking livestock in the area.
00:36:05Belongs to a friend of ours.
00:36:08We'll let you know who it belongs to.
00:36:11And he's probably watching it.
00:36:13I'm sure he is.
00:36:15See what a pass rusher does after he pass rushes.
00:36:18He goes and gets some oxygen.
00:36:20That's Kevin Williams returning the kickoff.
00:36:25With 9-57 left in the first half, it's Dallas 7, Green Bay 3.
00:36:36Back at Texas Stadium, Pat Summerall with John Madden.
00:36:39The Cowboys leading the Green Bay Packers 7-3.
00:36:44Dallas ball at their own 30.
00:36:49Michael Irvin comes wide left.
00:36:51Kevin Williams goes wide right.
00:36:57Aikman goes back to throw it.
00:37:02Into backer territory.
00:37:04Stopped by Doug Evans.
00:37:06You know, the amazing thing about Aikman, he's been perfect today, Pat.
00:37:09Yeah.
00:37:10I mean, here's the guy that gets hurt, doesn't practice,
00:37:13takes all the snaps on Friday, and then comes in and he's been perfect.
00:37:18He's eight for eight.
00:37:20And at all areas, I mean, the short ones, the medium ones, the deep ones,
00:37:24wherever he throws it, it's worked thus far.
00:37:28Two tight ends this time.
00:37:34Emmitt Smith.
00:37:36First down, Cowboy.
00:37:40Newsom made the stop.
00:37:41Boy, does he pop through there in a hurry.
00:37:43You see big Eric Williams.
00:37:45He's out there in front.
00:37:46He's giving the sign.
00:37:47He's going to make a block right here, and then he's going to run up
00:37:50and he's going to signal first down himself.
00:37:52He goes out.
00:37:53He gets Reggie.
00:37:54He pushes him to the outside.
00:37:55They get that crease in that right side,
00:37:58and Eric Williams comes running up and goes first down.
00:38:01Watch him.
00:38:02Block, block, block, block, block.
00:38:04Now you look.
00:38:05You look.
00:38:06Then you follow your guy up, and you say, okay, what do we got here?
00:38:09Then you get the first down signal.
00:38:11Emmitt Smith almost broke another one.
00:38:15Gets inside the 35 to about 33 in Green Bay Territory.
00:38:20You know, until this drive, though, Emmitt Smith had only had seven yards.
00:38:24He had had seven carries and seven yards, and, you know,
00:38:27that doesn't mean anything.
00:38:28I remember Darrell Johnston saying that when you look at Emmitt Smith,
00:38:32you never look at his stats until the game's over.
00:38:36He's going to start doing projections after the first quarter.
00:38:42Second down.
00:38:47Aikman still perfect.
00:38:48Irvin stopped by Doug Evans.
00:38:53Moved the chain.
00:38:56This is just an amazing thing, this Troy Aikman.
00:38:59I mean, coming back here and having that injury
00:39:01and just being so smooth and so confident.
00:39:05It looks like, you know, Irvin knows what he's going to do.
00:39:10Aikman knows what he's going to do.
00:39:11Emmitt Smith knows what he's going to do.
00:39:13The offensive line knows what he's going to do.
00:39:15And now it looks like the Green Bay Packers are starting to know what he's
00:39:19going to do, and they don't like it.
00:39:20But he still does it.
00:39:23That's when you're on top of your game.
00:39:25Emmitt Smith.
00:39:29That last little spin got him inside the 20.
00:39:33Yeah, that last little spin was off my man, Nate Newton.
00:39:36He was following his left guard, Nate Newton, in the hole.
00:39:39Good man to follow.
00:39:40Yeah, big old Nate was pulling around there,
00:39:42and Emmitt was saying, I'm going to follow Nate.
00:39:45He got a little too close to him because he ran right into him.
00:39:52Watch Nate here.
00:39:53He's going to pull right here, number 61.
00:39:57Here comes Emmitt.
00:39:58He's going to follow Nate.
00:39:59He's going to follow Nate.
00:40:00Boom!
00:40:01He just runs right into his backside.
00:40:03That'll knock you down.
00:40:05Packers jumped.
00:40:06Aikman has the pass batted down, looking for an overcheck.
00:40:11But Gabe Wilkins might have jumped offside.
00:40:17Before the ball was snapped.
00:40:19Yes.
00:40:20That's what he'll tell you.
00:40:21That's the key.
00:40:23Jumped offside before the ball was snapped.
00:40:25Offside.
00:40:26Number 98 on the defense.
00:40:2825 yards.
00:40:29Still second down.
00:40:32Gabe Wilkins was the guy that jumped offside,
00:40:35but he was also the guy that batted the ball down.
00:40:38Yep.
00:40:39Well, that gives you an edge.
00:40:42Second down.
00:40:43Yeah, this is what happens when you get an edge.
00:40:45You get that close to the quarterback, and you jump that high,
00:40:48and you knock the ball down.
00:40:50But it doesn't count.
00:40:51Second and three.
00:40:58Emmett Smith down at about the 14.
00:41:01Wayne Simmons made the tackle.
00:41:09Yeah, this offensive line is starting to do a job,
00:41:12this offensive line of the Dallas Cowboys.
00:41:15Williams is out now.
00:41:16Eric Williams, he's on the sideline.
00:41:19He had that knee reconstructive surgery,
00:41:22and then he tore a calf muscle.
00:41:26Stone has taken his place.
00:41:31Two tight ends.
00:41:34Emmett gets the carry.
00:41:37Bounced off one and squirmed down to about the seven.
00:41:42That's when a runner never stops.
00:41:43You see who he bounced off?
00:41:44He bounced off of Reggie White.
00:41:46Reggie White comes down the line,
00:41:48and you're going to see 92 come in there,
00:41:50and he's going to make the hit.
00:41:51Boom, there's Reggie right there.
00:41:53He lowers a boom,
00:41:54and instead of knocking Emmett Smith down,
00:41:56he knocks him sideways.
00:41:58Emmett keeps his feet going and gets a first down.
00:42:01That's why great running backs always keep their feet moving.
00:42:03Did you see him cover up the ball when he felt the contact coming?
00:42:06Well, Reggie White's going to be bringing about a 300-pound load
00:42:09down that line to put on that ball.
00:42:11Williams is back.
00:42:13A great offensive tackle.
00:42:16And Emmett Smith gets another carry to about the five.
00:42:19Pulled backwards by Fred Strickland.
00:42:24Yeah, that's the thing about this Dallas offense.
00:42:26We talk about, you know, the offensive line had to do their job.
00:42:29They're doing their job.
00:42:31But there's no one thing you can take away.
00:42:33I mean, if you say, well, we've got to rush Troy Aikman,
00:42:35and then they're just going to hand it to Emmett,
00:42:37and he's going to get in there behind this offensive line.
00:42:39If you're going to say we've got to gang up and take away Emmett Smith,
00:42:43then Troy is going to get back there.
00:42:45Troy Aikman is going to get back there
00:42:46and just throw the ball to Michael Irvin and Jay Novacek all day.
00:42:50Second and goal from the five.
00:42:52Novacek moves to his right.
00:42:54Aikman gives it again to Emmett Smith.
00:42:58Emmett taken down by Reggie White.
00:43:02Emmett dipped inside, and Reggie didn't bite.
00:43:05That is a great tackle for a big man.
00:43:07Yeah, because that was darn near an open field tackle.
00:43:10And you don't see that often.
00:43:12Watch Reggie White here.
00:43:13Mostly those big linemen, they just grab something and try and hold on.
00:43:17But when you get in this position right there that Reggie White was in,
00:43:20that was an open field tackle.
00:43:22And he didn't go for that little move to the inside.
00:43:25He made a great play there.
00:43:27Third and goal at the six.
00:43:34Aikman will throw it in a hurry up high.
00:43:38Intended for Michael Irvin.
00:43:41That has to be on Michael Irvin.
00:43:43Yeah, he pushed.
00:43:44Yeah, he did.
00:43:45He pushed.
00:43:46Michael Irvin pushes as well or better than anyone in this league.
00:43:51But they had to see that one.
00:43:57Against Dallas, against Michael Irvin.
00:44:00He's saying he did, and he'll argue with it.
00:44:03He's still arguing with Deion Sanders about that one in the championship game
00:44:07with the 49ers a year ago.
00:44:09And now they're teammates.
00:44:12Looks like Red's going to say something else.
00:44:16Number 88 on the offense.
00:44:18That penalty is to fly.
00:44:22So, Bono will come on.
00:44:25Michael Irvin's going to argue a while.
00:44:27Here he is right there.
00:44:30The ball's in the air, and he pushes him right there.
00:44:33I think what he's saying is he just had his hand on him,
00:44:36and Newsom fell down.
00:44:38But he does have his hand on him.
00:44:40No question.
00:44:42Novacek holding.
00:44:44Novacek holding.
00:44:47From 24 yards out, Bono's field goal was good.
00:44:5510-3 Dallas with 3.58 left in the first half.
00:45:02Our Affleck trivia question.
00:45:04When was the last time Green Bay beat Dallas in a playoff game?
00:45:09And who were the two quarterbacks?
00:45:13When was the last time Green Bay beat Dallas in the playoff?
00:45:17Who were the leaders?
00:45:1910, the Packers, 3 in the second quarter.
00:45:213.58 left before the half.
00:45:25Bono will kick off.
00:45:27And deep for the Packers, Travis Jervie and Charles Jordan.
00:45:35Short kick this time.
00:45:38Jordan.
00:45:44Good coverage by the Cowboys.
00:45:48Let's watch this play again, and you can see Michael Irvin has his hand,
00:45:52and right there he pushes Newsom just a little.
00:45:55Then he goes up for the ball.
00:45:58And you go on the sideline, there's Deion Sanders,
00:46:00and Sanders is playing like he's Newsom and showing that.
00:46:04Then you go back to January 15th in the championship.
00:46:08Here's the play that they didn't call pass interference on,
00:46:11and you saw Deion's hand in there.
00:46:13And they're still arguing about it.
00:46:14And they're still talking about it.
00:46:15This was the two of them at practice this week talking about that play.
00:46:20So Michael Irvin and pushing off or not pushing off or pass interference
00:46:25is a subject discussed every day, every way.
00:46:28Favre gets it to Brooks.
00:46:31Brooks tripped up by Godfrey Miles.
00:46:39Morgan, I believe, not Brooks.
00:46:41That's one thing about Brett Favre.
00:46:43You know, he has a lot of confidence.
00:46:45And when something happens, he's just going to keep playing.
00:46:48He's just going to keep coming.
00:46:50And we see here he has pretty good protection.
00:46:52Brooks runs across.
00:46:54He finds Brooks on the cross.
00:46:55And then Brooks is a pretty good runner.
00:46:57I think he probably learned that from Sterling Sharp, too,
00:47:00that you run after you catch the ball.
00:47:02Now, there's Charles Haley.
00:47:04If Morgan had got the block, Brooks had made the reception.
00:47:07This is Edgar Bennett.
00:47:11Jones on the tackle.
00:47:13Here again, our AFLAC trivia question.
00:47:16The last time Green Bay beat Dallas in the playoffs,
00:47:19and who were the quarterbacks?
00:47:23The Ice Bowl, the very famous Ice Bowl.
00:47:26December 31st, 1967.
00:47:29Bart Starr was the Green Bay quarterback.
00:47:31He threw two touchdown passes.
00:47:33Don Meredith was the Dallas quarterback.
00:47:37Landry and Lombardi were the coaches.
00:47:41Second and eight.
00:47:46Favre bounces off Bennett.
00:47:50I'll tell you, Darren Woodson was there to do something, too.
00:47:56Ken Rutgers is a pretty good player.
00:47:58He's a left tackle.
00:48:00He's going to be blocking on Charles Haley.
00:48:02You watch Rutgers here.
00:48:04He starts out and just goes head to head.
00:48:06Charles Haley's trying to bull rush him,
00:48:08and Rutgers just pushes him right to the ground.
00:48:11That's a pretty good job right there.
00:48:13That is.
00:48:14You just take on that bull rush,
00:48:16Favre doesn't like what he sees.
00:48:19Calls a timeout.
00:48:20They had four wide receivers in the game.
00:48:22Timeout Green Bay.
00:48:24They have two left.
00:48:27All Sunday is brought to you by Mitsubishi,
00:48:30the new thinking in automobiles.
00:48:47Back at Texas Stadium.
00:48:50Bright, bright sunny day in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.
00:48:55You can see those shadows starting to creep across the field.
00:48:58Third and eight.
00:48:59Favre gets away from Tolbert.
00:49:02Chased by Haley.
00:49:05And he throws it away.
00:49:11Sanders caught it.
00:49:14Sanders caught it.
00:49:15Yeah, did you see that?
00:49:17That's not a bad thing.
00:49:18Tolbert starts it.
00:49:19Tolbert starts him on the run.
00:49:21Charles Haley is getting him,
00:49:23and he knows that he better get rid of that ball,
00:49:25so he throws it to Deion Sanders.
00:49:28Sanders caught it.
00:49:29He's going to return it.
00:49:30Should have brought it right up that sideline.
00:49:35He played with Deion Sanders.
00:49:37Remember, he was at Atlanta with the Falcons
00:49:40when Deion Sanders was there.
00:49:42In fact, Sanders gave him the nickname of country.
00:49:45Right.
00:49:46Hendrick.
00:49:47Dupont it.
00:49:48High, high kick.
00:49:50Kevin Williams signals fair catch
00:49:52and makes it at about the 12.
00:49:55Cowboys will take over.
00:49:562-0-9.
00:49:59Left to play in the first half.
00:50:01Deion in practice.
00:50:02You know, Deion says that he thinks that he can play next week
00:50:06against the San Diego Chargers.
00:50:08And the Cowboys are thinking
00:50:10that they would like to get him back for the Atlanta Falcon game.
00:50:14Notice he was wearing number two.
00:50:16That's the number he wore in college.
00:50:18And his number, he was in Tallahassee last night
00:50:21at Doak Campbell Stadium where his number was retired,
00:50:24the collegiate number two.
00:50:27He's a great football player.
00:50:29He's a great baseball player.
00:50:30He's just a heck of an athlete,
00:50:32and he is really going to change this Dallas Cowboy defense
00:50:37when he gets in there.
00:50:40Eggman.
00:50:43Out to about the 15.
00:50:45Darius Holland made the stop.
00:50:49Two-minute warning coming.
00:50:52Emmett, slow to get up.
00:50:56But as he usually does, he gets up.
00:50:5910-3 with two minutes to go in the first half.
00:51:10Cowboys 10, Packers 3.
00:51:12Dallas ball at their own 15.
00:51:17Eggman back to throw.
00:51:20Daryl Johnston.
00:51:22And the Moose rumbles out to about the 38
00:51:26in the Dallas first down.
00:51:27We got a great combination here today.
00:51:29We got the Cheesehead and the Mooses.
00:51:33They throw to the Moose in his two-minute warning.
00:51:35Now they're going without a huddle here.
00:51:37Anytime he gets the ball, all the fans wake up.
00:51:39In any stadium.
00:51:41Eggman.
00:51:43That's a complete ticket.
00:51:45Michael Irvin.
00:51:46And Irvin scrambles down inside the 35 and the 34.
00:51:50George Teague made the stop.
00:51:52Craig Newsom, the corner out there, missed him twice.
00:51:55He was covering him, the rookie corner.
00:51:57He missed him.
00:51:58He got up.
00:51:59He went, and he missed him again.
00:52:0129-yard pickup.
00:52:02Eggman to Irvin.
00:52:03Timeout, Dallas.
00:52:10As you're going to see out here in the right,
00:52:13Trey Eggman is going to throw to his right out here.
00:52:16Now watch 21.
00:52:17He comes up, and he misses him.
00:52:19Then he chases him.
00:52:20Then he misses him again.
00:52:22That's two missed tackles on one play.
00:52:24So that's three bad things that happened to Craig Newsom.
00:52:26He's only a rookie.
00:52:27Number one draft choice.
00:52:30Gets beaten.
00:52:31Misses a tackle.
00:52:32Gets up and misses another tackle.
00:52:34As you look at the big E, Eric Williams,
00:52:37still stretching that calf muscle.
00:52:39Coming up at the half, the Dockers' halftime report.
00:52:42J.B., Terry, Howie, and Jimmy with the scores and highlights
00:52:46of all the games around the league.
00:52:48A minute 26 left to play in the first half.
00:52:51Dallas on the move, leading 10-3.
00:52:54I bet they didn't think the Packers would only have
00:52:56three points in his first half.
00:53:00Eggman to Innocent.
00:53:03Eggman to Emmitt Smith.
00:53:05And Emmitt to the 20.
00:53:07There's one of those plays that shows how good this offensive line is.
00:53:11Emmitt Smith runs 10 yards and doesn't even get touched.
00:53:14Watch it.
00:53:15He's going to come right here on the left side,
00:53:17and you're going to see Nate Newton come out.
00:53:19You're going to see him block down.
00:53:21You're going to see Daryl Johnston make the block here.
00:53:23And Emmitt Smith runs 10 yards before anyone touches him.
00:53:28I mean, that's an amazing statistic that over half his yards
00:53:31are made before he's ever touched.
00:53:35It's a Green Bay timeout.
00:53:38In that timeout, they can work on Big Eric's leg.
00:53:41And you can see here, look at this.
00:53:43Before there's any contact, and that's up to date now,
00:53:46he makes 420 yards.
00:53:49Then after the first contact, he makes another 262.
00:53:53He's made thus far 420 yards on the ground before he was ever touched.
00:54:00Now, some of that's Emmitt Smith, but a lot of that's the offensive line.
00:54:04But he picks those holes so well, it would be a joy, I think,
00:54:08to play offensive line in front of him.
00:54:10Yeah, and the other thing I think when you talk about the offensive line,
00:54:14you can't leave out the moose, Daryl Johnston,
00:54:16because the offensive line is a big part of that blocking.
00:54:19But Daryl Johnston's lead blocking is equally as big.
00:54:24You might as well put him in there with the rest of those guys.
00:54:27I would, yeah.
00:54:28They ought to call him whatever they call them.
00:54:31First at 10, and Aikman back to throw it.
00:54:34As time goes to pass behind Michael Irvin.
00:54:39And that really is the first bad pass he's thrown all day.
00:54:42And you never see Trey Aikman do that.
00:54:46I mean, he's open here, and usually Aikman throws it
00:54:49right where the guy's going, right in front of him.
00:54:52Here, Michael Irvin was open, and he just threw that one behind him.
00:54:55That was just a bad throw.
00:54:58And that's something you don't see very often in his game.
00:55:01No, and especially with Michael Irvin.
00:55:03If he has any guy that he is really on the same page with as Michael Irvin.
00:55:08N.J. Novichuk.
00:55:10He's at 11 out of 13, second and 10.
00:55:13Back to throw is Aikman.
00:55:15Outside to Emmitt Smith.
00:55:17Emmitt breaks away from one, gets down to about the 15.
00:55:22Greg Newsom finally made the stop.
00:55:25One thing, you know, it can be these cowboy offensive guys too.
00:55:30It can be.
00:55:31They're making a miss, but the Packers are not tackling well again.
00:55:34They're starting to miss tackles and get sloppy tackling in the second quarter.
00:55:39Aikman gets the snap.
00:55:41The pass to Michael Irvin.
00:55:43Irvin close to a touchdown.
00:55:47To the one.
00:55:49And there was some more missed tackles.
00:55:51You see on that play, again, there was about three missed tackles.
00:55:54Again, you have to credit part of it to Michael Irvin,
00:55:56but the Green Bay Packer defense has not tackled well in this second quarter.
00:56:01Thirty seconds left.
00:56:02This is a Dallas timeout.
00:56:06You see the run there.
00:56:07There's a missed tackle there.
00:56:08There's a missed tackle there.
00:56:10And they finally get him on the third one,
00:56:12but that's when he's at the one yard line.
00:56:14If you're going to hit these slants, boom, right there.
00:56:16They have to be hit and tackled right there at the seven yard line,
00:56:19not at the one yard line.
00:56:21I mean, this missed tackle caused six more yards.
00:56:25You see right there?
00:56:26That was Butler there.
00:56:27He comes up.
00:56:28He misses.
00:56:29And because of that miss, they get six yards.
00:56:32Here's the flat pass before.
00:56:36Yeah, that's the thing.
00:56:37And watch Troy Aikman there.
00:56:39He's pulling that leg out of there.
00:56:41And that thing, he's still aware of that calf muscle.
00:56:45Very much so.
00:56:47And he said before the game, he said, I can't run.
00:56:50He said, if they put pressure on me and make me run, he said,
00:56:53I'm going to be out of there.
00:56:54They haven't really put pressure on him that has made him have to run.
00:57:00Each team has one timeout remaining.
00:57:02First and goal from the one.
00:57:04You have to expect Emmitt Smith.
00:57:07Thirty seconds left.
00:57:08They still have one timeout left.
00:57:11So, therefore, having that one timeout left, they can't run the ball.
00:57:15Too tight in.
00:57:19Touchdown, Emmitt Smith.
00:57:29Emmitt, I think, landed on the back of his head.
00:57:32He did.
00:57:33And he might be dazed.
00:57:35Might be.
00:57:36He is dazed a little bit.
00:57:39Now, he wants to get in the shade there.
00:57:41But he did.
00:57:42He went over the top.
00:57:43And that's one thing about going over the top.
00:57:45You don't know where or how you're going to come down.
00:57:48This is goal line defense.
00:57:49Everyone getting low, getting low, getting low.
00:57:52You see him jump and dive and turn.
00:57:54Get that ball in the end zone.
00:57:56And now he's going to come down and hit right there on the back of his head.
00:58:00And, again, Daryl Johnson did a heck of a job leading this play.
00:58:04People say that these guys are overpaid and they're prima donnas
00:58:08and they make too much money.
00:58:10I tell you, if you're tough and you do the things that this guy does,
00:58:14there's no way you can overpay Emmitt Smith.
00:58:17You don't hear too many people say that about him.
00:58:20I don't think so, no.
00:58:25They just gave him the ball.
00:58:27And, you know, he keeps all those footballs that he scores with.
00:58:30Whatever was knocked out of him is back in him now.
00:58:34Enough to know he wants to keep the football.
00:58:36And he'll get that and then they mark it and they put it in the trunk.
00:58:40You know, when he gets through playing this game,
00:58:42he's going to have a heck of a lot of football somewhere.
00:58:49He doesn't even have his hat, though.
00:58:51You know, he has no idea.
00:58:52He knows he got the touchdown.
00:58:54He knows the Cowboys are leading.
00:58:55He knows he has a ball in his hand, but he doesn't know where his hat is.
00:58:59Bono for the extra point.
00:59:01Novacek holding.
00:59:0317-3.
00:59:08Looked like such a harmless drive that began way back deep in Dallas' own territory.
00:59:15They had a two-minute warning coming up.
00:59:17They took that, and then all of a sudden they struck.
00:59:20That's what this offense can do.
00:59:22You know, they get to a point where they're almost surgical.
00:59:26And it's just the combination of, you know, Troy Aikman,
00:59:31throwing the ball to Michael Irvin,
00:59:33or throwing it or handing it to Emmitt Smith.
00:59:36That's what the Cowboys are with the big offensive line and the moose.
00:59:39And that's what that drive was all about.
00:59:43Giving them some smelling salts to see if they'll open that stuff up again.
00:59:48It didn't work yet.
00:59:51I want another one.
00:59:52I think, you know, you know if it doesn't work,
00:59:55then you go to another one because when it works,
00:59:57that smelling salt, when you take that thing, it makes your head go backwards.
01:00:02It makes you take a backwards step.
01:00:04Here it is again.
01:00:05Look at Daryl Johnson smothered the pile in front of him.
01:00:07And this is what made Emmitt Smith's head go backwards right there.
01:00:10I mean, you come and that's landing head over heels.
01:00:14Bono lines the kickoff to one of the up men in the Packer wedge
01:00:20who handles it well but doesn't do much with it.
01:00:24I guess he landed heels over head.
01:00:27Yeah.
01:00:30These guys are amazing.
01:00:31I mean, you just hate to keep saying that they're amazing.
01:00:35But, I mean, the toughness, just being methodical,
01:00:40just taking the ball down, controlling it.
01:00:42We talked earlier about how it was going to be about line play.
01:00:46And in this second quarter, the Dallas offensive line
01:00:50and defensive lines have really taken over this game.
01:00:54They put the heat on Favre and they've done a good job protecting Aikman.
01:00:59After that touchdown, by the way.
01:01:01Well, now we're underway.
01:01:02We're going to show you what happened after the touchdown.
01:01:04We will.
01:01:06Here's Favre back to throw it.
01:01:10Incomplete intended for Morgan.
01:01:13This is on a Smith's touchdown play.
01:01:17You see, the play is over here and everyone's checking in.
01:01:21And then Ron Stone wants a little, he's going to block Sean Jones some more.
01:01:25Look at the peacemaker.
01:01:27Yeah, but Nate, you see, Nate is so big that when he puts his arm out,
01:01:31he blocks out six guys.
01:01:34And he pushes them all backwards.
01:01:35I know, he forms a circle.
01:01:37He tells them, okay, everyone back, everyone back here.
01:01:39I got control.
01:01:40I got control of things here.
01:01:42Everyone get behind me.
01:01:43Six guys get behind Nate.
01:01:45He is a circle.
01:01:46Did you see him on his motorcycle yesterday?
01:01:48That's a cycle.
01:01:49I sure did.
01:01:52Bennett, the ball carrier.
01:01:54Haley tripped him up.
01:01:56When old Nate gets control of his situation,
01:01:59this is how he comes to practice.
01:02:01This is the sight.
01:02:02This is how he goes home after practice.
01:02:05There's an all Madden guard.
01:02:07That's still a sight.
01:02:09Look at him.
01:02:10He's blowing that Harley out.
01:02:12He said he hopes his mother and grandmother don't see this.
01:02:17Oh, no, that's not.
01:02:19No, no.
01:02:20You want your mother and grandmother to see this?
01:02:23Well, he's laughing at me back here.
01:02:25What the heck's that all about?
01:02:27I wonder what he's laughing at.
01:02:30Still laughing.
01:02:31For the start of the second half,
01:02:32after these messages from your local Fox station.
01:02:40Back at Texas Stadium,
01:02:41the Cowboys leading the Packers 17 to 3.
01:02:46And John, we talked about controlling the offensive line
01:02:49and the defensive line, the scrimmage.
01:02:51And so far, the Cowboys have done a very effective job of that.
01:02:54Yeah.
01:02:55And I think if the Packers are going to get back in it,
01:02:57they're just going to have to take over the lines of scrimmage.
01:02:59I mean, they're going to have to put some pressure on Troy Aikman.
01:03:01They're going to have to tackle better.
01:03:03I mean, their tackling in that second quarter was terrible.
01:03:05Well, as you said, during the first half broadcast,
01:03:08your comments, you were saying the tackling's been bad,
01:03:10but some of that's due to the running ability of Emmitt Smith.
01:03:13Yeah.
01:03:14And there was a period there where the Cowboys were almost perfect.
01:03:16I mean, Troy Aikman,
01:03:17you'd never know that he was injured and he throws to Michael Irvin.
01:03:20He catches everything and he's making a miss.
01:03:22And Emmitt Smith will make a miss and so on.
01:03:24But if they're going to, if they're going to do anything,
01:03:27they have to control the line of scrimmage.
01:03:28They have to tackle better.
01:03:29And they have to start getting some first downs
01:03:31and then just working the ball down the field and getting a touchdown.
01:03:35And then, of course, keeping the Cowboys off the field.
01:03:38As you said about that last Cowboy drive before Emmitt's touchdown,
01:03:42they were almost surgical.
01:03:44And they'll do that to you.
01:03:45They'll do that to you.
01:03:46And you have to take that away from them
01:03:48just by being in control in the line of scrimmage.
01:03:52First half statistics look this way.
01:03:55The Packers 24 yards rushing.
01:03:57The Cowboys 49.
01:03:59That may not seem like much, but that might just be enough.
01:04:02168 yards passing.
01:04:04217 total for Dallas against 115 for Green Bay.
01:04:09And then again, if you're playing the Cowboys,
01:04:11here's a big one right here where they had,
01:04:13where the Packers had the turnover
01:04:15and that directly led to seven touchdowns.
01:04:18I mean, to a touchdown and seven points.
01:04:21That was the interception thrown by Favre
01:04:23that Godfrey Miles came up with.
01:04:26Eric Williams is still trying to loosen up.
01:04:29He's doing a heck of a job.
01:04:31You know, if you look, he has the right knee is bad
01:04:34and it's the left calf.
01:04:36And if you watch right here, he's blocking Reggie White.
01:04:39And watch him grab the left calf there.
01:04:42He had that problem.
01:04:43And then he's over there trying to stretch it.
01:04:45They even have a machine down in the field.
01:04:47So he's over there trying to stretch it with a pro stretch thing,
01:04:50trying to stretch that left calf out.
01:04:53And every time he gets in the huddle, he stretches.
01:04:55And he stretches when he comes out here.
01:04:57He's been doing more stretching in this game
01:04:59than any game I've ever seen anyone stretch.
01:05:01High short kick by Bono, fielded by Jordan.
01:05:04Gets out to about the 33-yard line
01:05:06where the Pack will go on the attack.
01:05:09And I think that's what the Pack has to do.
01:05:11I mean, Terry Bradshaw said at halftime
01:05:13that they're going to have to go deep.
01:05:15I agree with that.
01:05:16But I think they have to get control of the line of scrimmage first.
01:05:20You know, and just start working, getting some first downs first.
01:05:23You know, because you don't want to think that you have to go deep
01:05:26and then you do something, you get one picked off,
01:05:28and then they just surgically take it away from you again.
01:05:32Sometimes patience is a very difficult thing to achieve.
01:05:37Here's Favre back to throw it.
01:05:39Gets it outside to Brooks.
01:05:41Brooks will get a Packer first down.
01:05:43Out of bounds at the 45.
01:05:46Fred Favre almost threw that one like he was mad at it.
01:05:52If you look, you can see where they threw in the first half.
01:05:56To the left, he was 0 out of 1, 4 out of 9 in the middle,
01:06:01and 4 out of 6 to the right.
01:06:03And that's where you'd think they'd work is their right side.
01:06:06That's where Clayton Holmes is.
01:06:08And, of course, he's a right-handed quarterback.
01:06:10If it was Steve Young, you'd look at the other direction.
01:06:13Here's Favre to Bennett.
01:06:15Midfield and into Dallas territory.
01:06:18Stopped by Russell Maryland.
01:06:20And that's one of the things we're talking about,
01:06:22controlling the line of scrimmage.
01:06:24And offensive linemen will always tell you,
01:06:26if you want us to do that, you have to let us run.
01:06:29You have to give us some running plays,
01:06:31let the guards pull, let the double team,
01:06:34let us get bodies on bodies and push them back.
01:06:37We can't pass protect the whole game.
01:06:39We've got to run some at them.
01:06:42Every offensive lineman always says that.
01:06:45Always wants to run.
01:06:48Well, it gives them a chance to take out some of that venom,
01:06:51some of that frustration on the other guy.
01:06:54Favre to Morgan.
01:06:59Hit by Larry Brown and knocked backwards.
01:07:02And then help arrived on the scene.
01:07:04Now, there is a tackle.
01:07:05I mean, Larry Brown came up there,
01:07:07and that's the way a cornerback should tackle.
