00:00Let's go!
00:01We're going to focus on Brock Purdy, and it's called the Purdy Prognosis, let's hear it!
00:09We've had two nights to sleep on Brock's performance.
00:13Here's Purdy, takes off, and goes head first for ten.
00:18Leading by six, Purdy protected, floats it for Kittle.
00:22Kittle with a catch and out across the 35.
00:25Play action, Purdy, use check, the catch, first and goal.
00:32Now it's time for Stani and Guru to break the huddle and deliver their Purdy Prognosis.
00:39Alright, I like it.
00:40That was dope.
00:41I like it.
00:42Yeah.
00:43By the way, I'm going to channel my inner monkeys.
00:46You hear the monkeys?
00:48Let me tell you something about Brock Purdy.
00:50I'm a believer.
00:52Mm-hmm.
00:53Remember?
00:54Oh.
00:55And I saw her face.
00:57Now I'm a believer.
00:59You never heard that song?
01:00No, I'm thinking of the TV show.
01:01Hey, hey, it's the monkeys.
01:03Same thing.
01:04Yeah.
01:05They were a real band.
01:06Back to Brock.
01:07Yeah, thank you.
01:08So Brock Purdy, Guru, no touchdowns.
01:12Right.
01:13No interceptions.
01:1519 for 29, 231 yards.
01:20And my question to you is, was he good enough?
01:25Oh, man.
01:26Is that good enough?
01:28I mean, to answer your question, yes.
01:30It's more than good enough.
01:32And just like Flea, who called earlier and talked about his accolades early on in his career,
01:36Stani, my man looks downfield.
01:39Six different receivers caught passes.
01:41Four different receivers caught passes for over 20 yards.
01:44That is the one facet to Brock Purdy's game.
01:47I don't think he gets enough love for it, Stani.
01:49He is not a dink and dunk dude.
01:51And on display, Monday Night Football, we saw Jennings, Debo, Juszczyk for 34 yards.
01:58My man, George Kittle, for 25.
02:00He's looking downfield.
02:02And when you do that, good things happen.
02:05And you look at the stat line, 19 to 29, 231.
02:09Didn't put the ball in harm's way.
02:12I'll take it all day long.
02:13You know, you know who he is.
02:16You know who Brock Purdy is.
02:19He's John Stockton.
02:22He's a pass-first point guard.
02:25That's who he is.
02:27I'm not mad at that.
02:28I'm just, is it too soon?
02:30He's a pass-first point guard.
02:33He spreads the ball around.
02:35He gets everybody involved.
02:38And if that's going well, then that's just the way he plays.
02:42Like he did on Monday Night.
02:45But, like a great point guard, sometimes you need to score a little bit more than you normally do.
02:54Sometimes you need to make some plays when other guys aren't making plays.
02:59He didn't have to do that on Monday.
03:02It was one of those games where Karl Malone had 32 and Brian Russell had 21.
03:08And Hornacek had 18.
03:10And then Stockton just 12 and 12.
03:13But if he needs to make plays, that's when he's going to have to obviously make plays.
03:20When things aren't going as perfectly as they were on Monday Night.
03:25But I am getting to the point where...
03:29Go ahead.
03:30I mean, what more do you want him to do?
03:34He almost can't do more because Kyle Shanahan won't allow him to do more
03:41unless they're in a position where Kyle says, well now he needs to do more.
03:46But I really think that that went over the Jets.
03:49And I get it's the Jets and maybe they're not that good.
03:52All that kind of hype.
03:54That was Kyle Shanahan's template for a victory.
03:5937 rushes.
04:0219 for 29.
04:05No mistakes.
04:07Not one single solitary mistake.
04:10No turnovers.
04:11Put the ball on the money.
04:13And I think Kyle Shanahan would take that kind of win every day until Sunday.
04:19I just do.
04:20I don't think you're wrong.
04:21I'll tell you if I disagree with you.
04:23But also before the season started, I've been like a broken record
04:26telling you Brock doesn't get enough love for using his legs.
04:29And the O-line was so dominant, Stiney, Monday.
04:33He didn't have to.
04:34He had one rush for 11 yards.
04:36But the fact that he can get everybody involved on big downs, third downs.
04:41I'm just like, man, I don't see this going away.
04:45I don't think this is...
04:46Shout out Vegas.
04:47I don't think this is a mirage.
04:48I think this is the real Brock Purdy.
04:51And what did we say, Stiney?
04:53In a contract year.
04:55One down, 16 to go as far as the regular season.
04:59But what I came in with this morning, what I woke up with is you telling me
05:04you wanted to see him without maybe some weapons.
05:07And this is what you get, 32 points on the board without Christian McCaffrey.
05:13And I don't think McCaffrey's playing this Sunday, right?
05:17But with that said, you still watch him grow.
05:21And you're like, okay, he's without Hornacek.
05:23He's without Russell.
05:24And he's still getting it done, man.
05:26Yeah, I mean...
05:27He beat Aaron Rodgers.
05:28And I know Aaron Rodgers hadn't played in 22 months coming off injury.
05:31But you're right.
05:32I hyped the Jets just like a lot of people.
05:34But they were not, like Rob said from Sam Bruno, a playoff team.
05:38But I don't give a damn, Stiney.
05:40If you would have told me McCaffrey wasn't playing a week before this game,
05:44I would have probably gave the advantage to the Jets
05:46because I was so drunk on what they were supposed to be.
05:49Well, when I talked about Purdy playing without a weapon
05:53or without weapons, obviously McCaffrey's a weapon.
05:57But I had no idea that the guy who would step into his place
06:01was almost every bit the weapon that McCaffrey was.
06:05So to me, Jordan Mason filled in to the extent that
06:12he was a weapon, obviously, back there.
06:15Now what's going to happen when the 49ers can't run the ball
06:18like they ran it against the Jets?
06:20It's going to happen.
06:21It's going to happen.
06:22That's what we're going to have to see.
06:24But I don't see Brock Purdy losing you many football games.
06:30I really don't.
06:328-8-8, 9-5-7, 9-5-7-0, it is the Purdy prognosis.
06:38Here's the thing, though, and I don't know how this is going to factor into it
06:43or not, but the stats, and I get it, they're just stats.
06:50The stats are just ho-hum.
06:53If he has 8-10 games like this, his numbers aren't going to be off the charts.
07:00But that's not what it's about, right?
07:02Well, I get it.
07:04That's fantasy football.
07:06This is real life.
07:07Okay, so even if he doesn't put up big numbers,
07:14you're going to have to live with still paying him
07:17as high as any quarterback gets paid, even though the numbers won't be as good.
07:22And I'm asking you, and I mean this, Donnie,
07:24shouldn't that be what it's predicated on?
07:26Shouldn't that be in the world of what you hate?
07:28But the highlights and the things you say,
07:30I fall in love with, the flash and the sizzle and pizzazz,
07:35it's about his win-loss record.
07:37Well, then you could say, well, Jimmy should have gotten.
07:41But this is different.
07:42Why?
07:43Because the eye test is telling you Brock is throwing the ball down the field.
07:45I agree.
07:47And they still won with Jimmy.
07:48Then he's your guy, you hope, for the next century.
07:52No, I'm with you.
07:54I'm with you 100%.
07:56Because Garoppolo got paid because he won,
08:01and Purdy will eventually get paid because he wins.
08:04I'm just saying that I think there's a chance.
08:07The lack of numbers could hurt him if the contract negotiates.
08:11I don't know if it'll hurt him.
08:12I don't know if it'll hurt him another day,
08:13but you got me thinking that should not be a prerequisite.
08:17I mean, it's something you look at,
08:18but if you're watching Brock play,
08:20who just took you to the Super Bowl and NFC Championship game,
08:23it's, Donnie, I don't know what else is on the bone,
08:27and I know it's one week.
08:29But we get four more weeks of this with Noma Caffrey,
08:32I think you could almost give him that blank check.
08:35Yeah, I don't doubt it.
08:37I'm just saying that if Purdy gets broken off a monster number,
08:42he's going to probably get broken off a monster number,
08:45and his numbers won't look like the big boy type of numbers of the throwing type quarterbacks.
08:51Now, it shouldn't matter, but he's still going to hear about it, I guarantee you.
08:58888-957-9570 is the number.
09:03Let's go to Dennis.
09:04Dennis is in San Francisco.
09:06What's going on, Dennis?
09:07How you doing, man?
09:09Good morning, guys.
09:11It's a great show.
09:13Beginning of football season is great.
09:15Yes, sir.
09:16But game one, we only have one game, but we got to stay healthy.
09:21And, you know, the reason why we are not healthy right now with no Christian McCaffrey
09:27is because the way Kyle Shanahan thinks and coaches.
09:31He doesn't have any faith in his backup running backs.
09:35Where was his faith last year in Mason?
09:38All last season, my sons and I were watching the football games going,
09:42why doesn't he give McCaffrey a break?
09:44Why doesn't he play Mason?
09:45It was McCaffrey right, McCaffrey left, McCaffrey up the middle.
09:49You know what I mean?
09:50And now here we are because of Kyle Shanahan, his practices.
09:55He's a great coach, but you say he doesn't coach scared, Stiney.
09:59How do you say that?
10:00He doesn't have any faith in his backup players.
10:04He didn't have any faith in them last year,
10:07and now we got McCaffrey hurt, and he'll get, mark my words,
10:10Debo will be the next guy to go down.
10:13The way he uses them is not smart.
10:15He's not coaching smart.
10:17We need Debo to catch short passes,
10:19not to be putting behind the line of scrimmage like a halfback.
10:24He's a wide receiver.
10:25He's not a halfback.
10:27And Trey Lance wasn't a fullback, but that's what he tried to make him.
10:33This is Shanahan.
10:34Shanahan's a great coach, but he's also a victim of his own self.
10:41You know what I mean?
10:42I don't like the way he does these things.
10:45You know what I mean?
10:46It makes no sense to me.
10:48You know when you have players that are important to you,
10:51you want them to be available.
10:53Debo's not going to be available.
10:54He's susceptible to injury himself.
10:57How's he going to be available when he's going to get hurt playing a running back?
11:01That's just the way I feel about it with him.
11:03He's a great coach, but he drives me nuts on occasion.
11:07Appreciate it.
11:09Thanks, Dennis.
11:10Appreciate it.
11:11To me, this is the love and hate right there in one call,
11:15just our love and disappointment.
11:18When I say he doesn't coach scared,
11:21I meant that he doesn't care about running a guy 30 times if that's the recipe.
11:27He thinks that will bear fruit for him.
11:32I didn't mean it in the context of aggressive or non-aggressive play calling.
11:38But here's the way I look at Shanahan and that.
11:42I really believe Shanahan, for the most part, coaches to win every game.
11:50He is not overly concerned about workload
11:55because I think it's got a lot to do with his dad,
11:59and that's just the way he views football and football players.
12:02You play them, and if they get hurt, then the next guy's got to step up.
12:07I think it's similar to Steve Kerr with the young players.
12:11For 10 years, we've heard about Steve Kerr doesn't like to play young players.
12:17He prefers veterans.
12:18That's a fact, I think, at this point, after we've watched Kerr coach for 10 years.
12:25He's got to lean to the veterans.
12:27I think Kyle Shanahan, in much the same way,
12:29and I get it, you can criticize him for it,
12:33but I think Shanahan, in much the same way,
12:36coaches like he's incapable of going into a game saying,
12:43You know what? Okay, we got Minnesota this weekend.
12:47We're better than them.
12:49We should be able to beat them by a couple scores,
12:52so I'm going to head into this game thinking about getting some players some rest
12:58or limiting their time.
12:59I just don't think that's what he does.
13:02I think he's saying, I'm going to develop a game plan
13:06to try to beat the Minnesota Vikings as badly as we can,
13:10and then if we get up three scores and it's the fourth quarter,
13:13I'll take guys out.
13:14Well, it's kind of funny because you asked the great Loneal,
13:17we had him on last Friday, about pre-McCaffrey's, Donnie,
13:22when he had a stable of backs,
13:24and you talked about the Niner offensive system.
13:27Is it more inclined to get a running back hurt because it's so physical
13:31and they run so hard?
13:32But you look at Mosterd, you look at Breida, you look at Elijah Mitchell,
13:36all those guys cannot avoid injury.
13:39So I don't know if it's the scheme, but when you brought that up,
13:43I kind of snickered at it like, yeah, come on, it's football,
13:46but we can't ignore the right on the table brought to you by ATCO,
13:50the fact that 49er running backs get injured even when it's by committee.
13:58And that's maybe why they have a committee,
14:01because he thinks it's important to have a few guys who can run hard.
14:05Now I'll say this to you, partner, to the caller's last point,
14:08because he made some great points and let us know how he feels.
14:13Stein, if I'm up 27-10 or 27-13, maybe early fourth,
14:19and you see it throughout the league, now everybody's not McCaffrey,
14:22you spell your number one back sometimes.
14:25Like, you know what, we'll run the ball, punt it,
14:28but a lot of times in the Pittsburgh game, game one last year,
14:32we brought this up, that was well in hand, and we saw McCaffrey out there.
14:36And I know he wants to be, but you've heard the old adage,
14:41save the player from himself.
14:43Hey, Stein, it's all good, we got this, but you're right, he doesn't do that.
14:49Let's go to Matt in Seattle.
14:53What's up, Matt, how you doing, man?
14:55We'll talk about Brock Purdy.
14:57I'm feeling great, guys, thanks for taking my call.
14:59You know, it hit me on Monday when I was watching the Manningcast,
15:03and I think Brock Purdy had a play where he had a naked bootleg,
15:07and then it was just him and a defender, and Peyton Manning broke it down
15:10where usually quarterbacks would take a step into the defender,
15:13but he took a step back, and he was so impressed by him doing that,
15:17and just took like a five-yard reception.
15:19But at that moment, that's when I told myself, I'm a believer.
15:22I'm a believer in Brock Purdy.
15:25Thanks for the call, appreciate it, Matt, in Seattle.
15:28He uses his feet well.
15:30One of the reasons that Kyle Shanahan is a great play caller
15:34is because he gets the ball to his best players
15:38more than any other coach can get the ball to his best players.
15:44And when you say best, I'm not going to tell you,
15:47and this is no shade of Jawan Jennings or Yuzcek,
15:51but you look at the log, just, you know, the longest play went to Kyle Yuzcek,
15:56and that was by design.
15:57Kyle did his part in catching the ball.
15:59You look at Jawan Jennings, he had a long one for 22,
16:02and nobody's going to sit here right now and call 95-7 the game
16:06and say Jordan Mason is better than Christian McCaffrey,
16:10but Stani, he toted the rock 28 times for 147.
16:14So a lot of it, to me, is system now, and I think we're starting to see that.
16:18And then we could revisit history and look at the Jimmy Garoppolo team in 19
16:23offensively who went to the Super Bowl with Emmanuel Sanders.
16:28You know, obviously with Kittle, but a whole different stable
16:31of running backs, and that's why on this day it dawned on me
16:35and Monday night, especially being in the house,
16:38the brilliance of one scheming and game-calling of Kyle Shanahan.
16:43But he's clowning right now.
16:45He will never say it, but, like, Stani, I do wonder if Mason went down
16:50and the next backed-up, Garindo, what would he do?
16:54Would he average four-yard a pop?
16:56I don't know, but I'm like, I wouldn't call you crazy if somebody said that.
17:00Why wouldn't he?
17:02I mean, Shanahan's proven he can run the football with anybody.
17:08So I would expect any running back to be successful for the Niners.
17:16Adrian is in Hayward.
17:18Hey, Adrian, what's going on, man?
17:22Hey, how's it going, fellas?
17:24Hey.
17:25Yeah, yeah, sounds a good win on Monday.
17:30Kind of remind me a lot of 2018 to 2022 Niners with Jimmy Garoppolo.
17:38Aside from all the positives, I still see some negatives,
17:43that being the quarterback.
17:46And I know you guys are all in for Brock and love the guy,
17:51but is this really the guy you want for the next five to ten years leading your team
17:58after what happened in the Super Bowl where he was pretty bad,
18:03almost third downs with the pressure on him?
18:06That's all I got to say, guys.
18:08Thanks.
18:09I mean, who else do you want?
18:12I mean, is Burrow available?
18:15Yeah.
18:16Is Mahomes available?
18:17Yeah.
18:18No.
