00:00Are you currently taking sleeping pills either prescription or some over-the-counter pills
00:06and want to come off it completely? Well, then this video is for you.
00:11First of all, I want to say that if you have been taking any kind of sleeping pills under
00:17the prescription of a doctor, then please please please consult with your doctor before you alter
00:24the dosage or coming of it. Only your doctor will know your complete health history
00:31and they can prescribe and you know make the right judgment for you. So please do not try to
00:38you know go cold turkey. I appreciate your enthusiasm in trying to come off sleeping pills
00:44but it is not best at you know to go at it alone. There are many factors which can impact sleep
00:53at the physical level, at the mental level and at the emotional level. We need to work on all of
00:58them simultaneously and holistically before making a decision to taper you off or come off the
01:05sleeping pills and this advice even applies to over-the-counter medications. Again, I am not a
01:11fan of any kind of self-medication which you know you are taking maybe to some kind of allergy
01:18medication or a cough medication which also has a side effect of causing some sleepiness. Again,
01:24I'm not a big fan of it. So one thing which you need to understand is you know for some people
01:32medication is essential. When you have been struggling with insomnia for a really long time,
01:38it has taken a big toll on you physically and mentally and it is important to regain some bit
01:44of your strength before you are able to you know take some action to rectify the situation.
01:49Imagine you know you got hurt and there is a fracture in your leg. Would you try to keep
01:55walking on it or would you apply cast and allow your body to heal itself? It's the same even with
02:02your mental health. It is okay to take pills in the short term and for some people it might
02:09also be for a longer duration of time. It is okay. There's no need for any shame and again it is a
02:15good thing that you have in mind that you want to come off the pills but don't be in a hurry to
02:21come off the pills while you are under medication. Seek out therapy or counseling and try to
02:28understand why this is happening. See, sleep can either happen because of some physiological issues
02:34like hormones or vitamin deficiency or psychological issues. It cannot happen due to
02:40any other thing. So if it is the former, then you need to consult with a general physician to run a
02:46series of tests to see what could be impacting you and maybe fixing some of your hormones could
02:53you know indirectly improve the quality of your sleep and you might no longer need some kind of a
02:58sleeping pill and if it is not physical and if it is psychological maybe due to some incident like
03:05losing a job, losing a loved one or some kind of a financial crisis. All of these things can of
03:12course take a toll on any person. So in that case you need to learn to be comfortable
03:19with these uncomfortable emotions. We try to run away from emotions which are uncomfortable.
03:25We try to shove them deep inside our subconscious mind or not to look at it. It's like a pressure
03:33cooker. So the more and more you stuff things deeper and deeper into your heart and your mind,
03:39it will explode at some point of time and especially at night when things have slowed down
03:44around you. It is no wonder that they all come up for breathing so that you are able to look at it
03:51and unless and until you actually look at it bravely, boldly and get through it, they will keep
03:57recurring. So please consult a therapist or a counselor and figure out what could be the issue
04:04and to work around it. See when you are under the influence of a medication, at least your moods
04:12are stabilized. You're feeling much better. You're at least getting a couple of hours of sleep.
04:16That is the best time to fix the problem of insomnia. It's like going for
04:24physiotherapy to build your body strength when you are in a cast or something of that sort.
04:32Apart from counseling and therapy, I'm also going to recommend that you build a support system.
04:37A lot of people feel very depressed in this day and age because they feel disconnected.
04:43We don't open up about what we are really thinking and going through because of fear and
04:51even though we are more connected than ever digitally, we are more disconnected than ever
04:56in the real life. So start opening up about your difficulties, your good things that are happening
05:04in your life and then also good things with your family, with your friends and build a trusted
05:09group of people and you be for them and let them be for you. Again, it's not about oversharing.
05:17It's not about opening up to everyone. Trust is earned. Vulnerability is earned and you need
05:25to make sure that the person you're opening up is actually someone trustworthy who will keep
05:30your secrets, who will hold that space for you because you can't be in therapy all the time
05:36and while therapy is a wonderful tool, it is kind of like going to the hospital. You cannot live in
05:41the hospital. At some point of time, you need to get discharged, come back home, start eating well,
05:46going to the gym. So think of this like a mental gym and build a group of
05:56people with whom you feel comfortable, safe and where you can open up. So just to recap,
06:05if you are considering coming off sleeping pills, please consult your doctor who has prescribed you.
06:12They only know what is the reason they have prescribed a certain kind of a drug, what is the
06:17impact of it and what are the side effects of tapering off. Only they can decide
06:23what should be the right approach to tapering off and while you are under medication, please also
06:30consider reaching out to a therapist or a counselor to figure out what are those emotional
06:35issues which are bothering you and apart from that, build a trusted group of friends and family
06:42members with whom you can share the highlights and the lowlights of your life so that you know
06:48when a problem comes, you always have someone to count on.
