00:00Can repeating a mantra help you sleep better? Well, let's look at it. So, a mantra is a syllable,
00:09a word or a phrase that is repeated. It is used in spiritual practices typically in Hinduism
00:16and the mantra is usually repeated non-verbally in the mind and some people when they do it as
00:22a japa, a form of repetition of the mantra, they also say it out aloud.
00:29So, I'm not a spiritual teacher, so I'm not going to talk about the spiritual significance
00:34of particular mantras which are attributed to certain gods and goddesses, but I'm going to
00:39talk about it from a psychological aspect. So, when you look at mantra, so there are two things
00:46that it does. The first thing is it focuses the mind. So, you are bringing all your attention and
00:52powers of concentration on that particular syllable or a word. So, when you are focused
00:58on something, as a side effect, you become calm. If you have not noticed, you know, whenever you
01:04are indulged in some kind of a work, maybe it is coding, it is designing or even some household
01:10chores like, you know, doing the dishes, when you're focused on something, you would notice
01:16that your breathing gets regularized. It sometimes even becomes longer and deeper and, you know,
01:23the extra tension and the stress in the body vanishes. So, when you're focused on something,
01:29calmness happens as a side effect, which we don't, you know, understand. We try to, you know,
01:35do it in reverse. We try to calm down, let me calm down, let me calm down and instead we tend
01:41to hyperventilate. So, the mantra helps you, you know, focus your mind from wavering thoughts
01:48into one particular object or a word. The second thing which a mantra does is, it's a form of
01:56self-suggestion. So, when you believe in a higher power and then you start to associate a lot of
02:03positive things along with that mantra, you know, you feel that, you know, God is listening to you,
02:09God is taking care of you and outside of the spiritual significance, you know,
02:17psychologically at least you feel better about yourself, you know, what my problems will be taken
02:22care of, things are going to get better. It is a form of self-suggestion which you are doing for
02:28yourself. So, which is good, right? In a lot of times, insomnia is caused due to fear of not being
02:36able to sleep or anxiety about some kind of a future event, worry about, you know, losing a job,
02:43losing your health and things like that. So, in these cases, because of these positive psychological,
02:52you know, effects of mantra which is focused leading to calmness and some kind of a positive
02:58self-suggestion, it tends to work. Now, what to do if you are not a religious person or you don't know
03:06certain mantras? So, in that case, you know, a simple affirmation of certain words can also do
03:12the same work for you. So, I'm going to give you some examples. I'm going to give you actually
03:18three examples of mantras or affirmations or whatever you want to call it which will help you
03:24have a deep sleep. The first thing is, I let go. This is probably the most powerful thing.
03:33Majority of the problems that we face, emotional and the mental turmoil is because of our inability
03:40to let go. The past has happened and it could have been very difficult incident also, very serious
03:47health crisis, whatever it is, or somebody could have betrayed us. But by holding on to it, we are
03:55repeatedly opening the wound and not allowing it to heal. The thing is, you know, sometimes we tend
04:01to hold on to things thinking that, you know, if I hold on to it, maybe this incident won't happen
04:08to me again or, you know, I will not be betrayed or duped by someone. You can take the lesson from
04:14an incident, but you can let go of the emotions from it. That's the right way to do. And so,
04:19simply repeating, I let go, just for a few times before you go to bed, will help you, you know, to
04:28understand this at a deeper level and let go of things on a daily basis, both the little things
04:34and the big things. The second, you know, affirmation or mantra which I want to give you is,
04:41I am done. I am done for today or I'm done with all my effort. You can just simply keep it short.
04:49I am done. A lot of the times, you know, we have a never-ending to-do list. You finish five tasks,
04:56you add 50 tasks more to it, and that's how life is going to be. Till the day we die, there will
05:02always be things to do. You can't change anything. Imagine if you had nothing to do, you would be okay
05:09with it for one day or two days. On the third day, you would be, like, so bored out of your wits.
05:15You're like, oh my god, I need something to do. I at least need, like, you know, a watch list of
05:22TV shows and movies to keep myself occupied. So, having a to-do list is actually a good thing. It
05:28gives you some kind of outlet for your creative and physical energies. Now, again, the thing is,
05:36you know, like, we also need to learn, similar to letting go, to stop, to pause, which is where,
05:42you know, you have done your best. It's maybe 9 p.m, 10 p.m, or 11 p.m. Going on and on about it
05:50mentally is not going to change anything. The world is not going to stop if you sleep for six,
05:55seven, or eight hours. So, just repeating yourself that, I am done, kind of puts a closure to all the
06:01unfinished projects in your life, as well as in work. And the third and the most powerful mantra,
06:07the affirmation, which I'm going to give you is, I am taken care of. You know, a lot of the times,
06:14we feel very scared or anxious about the future. And if you just look back at your own life,
06:21just the last one week of incidents, how many of the incidents that you feared actually came true?
06:28I'm going to assume it's less than five percent. That's the thing, right? We are, you know, biased
06:34to look for negativity in life or for things that can go wrong. It is coming from an evolutionary
06:40perspective. When we lived in jungles and in caves, we had to look out for danger in the
06:46environment. So, our brains are primed for it. It's a survival tactic. And again, it is necessary.
06:52But, you know, when it goes into a hyper drive, that is where the problem is. So, just reminding
06:58yourself that, I am taken care of. Whether you believe in a higher power and the power is taking
07:03care of you, or you believe in yourself, it doesn't matter. Your mind will accept whatever
07:09you tell it. And the fact that, you know, I'm taken care of either by my own efforts or by God
07:15or the universe will help you to calm down and pacify. So, these are certain simple things which
07:23you can do. So, the three mantras or the affirmations that I'm going to give you is,
07:28I let go, I am done, and I am taken care of. So, just repeating these a couple of times,
07:36you know, five to ten times before you go to bed will help you calm down. And, you know,
07:42I would suggest you sit somewhere outside of your bed and repeat this because sometimes, you know,
07:47when we do these things and we expect them to immediately put us into sleep and that
07:53intention itself will backfire. So, just, you know, wind up your evening routine,
08:00brush your teeth and then sit for a few minutes, repeat this and then go about reading a book or
08:07listening to some music and then go to bed when you are tired and ready to sleep.
08:14Try this out and let me know how it goes.
