00:00I was going through the comments in insomnia forum and I found this one very interesting.
00:09It was from a yoga teacher.
00:11She had been struggling with insomnia for quite some time and she had written, I am
00:18able to help other people sleep well but why am I not able to do it for myself.
00:25She was a good yoga teacher.
00:27She seemed to have quite many years of experience as well and more than the experience, it is
00:34real proof from her own students and clients who have improved their sleep, their mental
00:42health after taking up yoga classes.
00:45So what is happening?
00:47This teacher definitely does understand the physiology and psychology.
00:53They understand how breath impacts mind, the mood and also what asanas to perform.
01:02More than that, they understand the psychology bit, how to do your best but not to put too
01:09much pressure on yourself, how to be loving and compassionate and more important, how
01:15to let go.
01:16But why is it despite doing all of this, she was unable to fix insomnia?
01:23That's because we are all excellent at giving advice but not really good at taking advice.
01:29I know that stings and unfortunately that applies even for me too.
01:34I am a therapist and I am good at handling my thoughts and emotions.
01:39For most of my life, I am able to do it on my own but there are situations where I hit
01:48a roadblock, I am completely at a loss or I just start going about in circles.
01:55In that case, I reach out to other therapists as well and get the help that I need.
02:00In the initial stages of my therapy career, I used to feel quite shy and reluctant to
02:07get help.
02:08The reason was my ego.
02:11What if other people find out that I am going to therapists for help?
02:17Will they think less of me?
02:19If I can't even fix myself, how good am I to other people?
02:25Why should people even trust me?
02:27Why should even people come to me for help?
02:30It was all these really silly thoughts if you think about it.
02:35Can a doctor operate upon themselves?
02:39Let's say I'm a heart surgeon.
02:41Can I do a surgery on my own heart?
02:44Obviously not.
02:45And which is why even in law enforcement or in medicine, people try to refrain or excuse
02:59themselves from working on their close family members and relatives because their emotions
03:06could cloud their judgment.
03:09We are all human beings.
03:11We first have emotions and then we use logic to justify our emotions.
03:18No matter how rational we think we are, emotions are way, way, way, way more powerful than
03:26logic.
03:28And it just takes a fraction of a second for an emotion to sometimes take over us completely
03:35for a few minutes or hours.
03:38So if you have been a yoga teacher, an energy healer or even a doctor and you have been
03:47struggling with insomnia, I just want to say it is your own ego which is stopping you from
03:55taking help.
03:57This is a harsh pill to swallow, but nonetheless something that we all need to admit.
04:06Nobody is ever going to look down upon you or think that you're not qualified enough
04:12just because you're going to another person for help.
04:16If you tripped and fell down, is somebody going to think that you are a weak human being
04:22for going to the ER and getting some first aid?
04:26Of course not.
04:28The same thing happens.
04:29You are allowed to make mistakes.
04:31You're allowed to be imperfect.
04:34You don't have to know everything about everything.
04:38You don't have to be able to fix everything about yourself.
04:43That does not make you any less of a yoga teacher, a healer or a therapist as well.
04:53So start to practice some of what you preach.
04:58Let in that kindness and compassion and be okay asking for help.
05:04Your clients are first of all never going to figure out that you asked somebody for
05:08help and they are never going to come and ask you for a refund or post a bad review.
05:14None of those things are ever going to happen.
05:16It is our own ego which gets in the way and prevents us from doing what is right most
05:23of the time.
05:24So I hope this was helpful and I really really hope that you take the help that you need
05:31without any shame and judgment upon yourself.
