00:00Hi, my name is Jack Marshall and I'm a digital reporter with the Lancashire Post newspaper
00:15and today we're just taking a quick look through some of our best retro archive pictures from
00:20the absolutely legendary local Preston nightclub, Tokyo Joe's. Now for the longest time Tokyo
00:27Joe's or Tok's was known as the go-to nightclub in Preston. It was famous for a good time,
00:34cheesy music, lots of laughs and just being the meeting spot for young people in the noughties
00:40and the nineties as well. And as a result of that it attracted more than its fair share
00:45of party people down the years who were all looking for, like we say, a good time and
00:48a proper night out in the city. Always a place to go to for fun, a bit of dodgy dancing and
00:54a place where you're going to create countless memories and tales to be told when you're
00:58feeling slightly worse for wear in the morning, I'm sure. Now recently I spoke to BBC Radio
01:032 DJ Scott Mills who told us about how he was brought on to DJ at Tokyo Joe's, the legendary
01:10Tokyo Joe's, back in the day and he took a little trip down memory lane recalling what
01:15it was like to be working at the legendary venue back in the day, like we say. And so
01:20we've decided to put together a bit of a collection of our very best archive pictures from the
01:24club because it was obviously an infamous location for many, a famous place for kind
01:31of party goers and thrill seekers who wanted a bit of fun on a Friday night. So yeah, hopefully
01:38you'll be enjoying these pictures of nights out from the past, which like we say, go back
01:44to when Tokyo Joe's was its absolute peak. Obviously it closed in 2006 and it briefly
01:50became a bunch of other clubs such as Live and Ignite and Evoque, but neither of those
01:55could really capture the magic of the place. And I imagine it's still mourned by a lot
01:59of people to this day. I mean, if you speak to certain people from that generation who
02:04would have enjoyed going to Tokyo Joe's, the first thing they say when you talk about Preston
02:08and the nightlife there, they start mentioning Tokyo Joe's. They just talk about what kind
02:14of place it was and how much fun they had there and the legendary party games like,
02:19you know, not trying not to be the first one to go to the bathroom and things like
02:23that. But yeah, there's some really interesting history behind the building as well. The building
02:27itself originally opened in 1928 as a cinema, which eventually gave over to much of its
02:32floor space, you know, to become a disco area. Tokyo Joe's itself was born in 1990 after
02:38a million pound refurbishment. So they invested a lot of money in it and good times were had
02:41there for plenty of years.
