00:00:00from this part of the rugby world Basil Kenyon and his afternoon's game and it's
00:00:04a mixture of the stars of the 1991 team and some new players and in the
00:00:10background you see them doing the war dance the Manu Samoa
00:00:15captain by number three Peter Fatiolou
00:00:22and the Italian team also captain by the prop forward Massimo Cutita look for
00:00:28number 10 Diego Dominguez to dominate at first five eighth with his trusty
00:00:32boot the former Australian Julian Gardner there the former Wallaby playing
00:00:38in Jersey number seven
00:00:44there are today's reserves former Manu Samoa captain Malaki Yupali is there
00:00:51number 19
00:00:58and a well-grassed field here at Basil Kenyon Stadium in East London
00:01:09we have a very big audience for our telecast today going to a number of
00:01:13countries we'd like to say hello to top sport viewers here in South Africa who
00:01:17are taking this telecast today and also to the people which this team represents
00:01:23the people of Western Samoa and there they are with the war cry the Manu Samoa
00:01:29which was so popular in 1991 at the Rugby World Cup in Britain
00:01:35yesterday's referee Joel Dumais of France young man aged only 29
00:01:48so there's the referee just checking the exact time Joel Dumais of France in
00:02:02control of this afternoon's game and it's Italy in the white and Manu Samoa
00:02:09in the blue and it's a pool be match the first appearance for both these teams at
00:02:13Rugby World Cup 95 Diego Dominguez kicks off and straight goes to the Manu Samoa
00:02:18halfback and there's Darren Kellett with a good attacking kick and was the
00:02:21referee aware that he'd been taken out yes he was he was tripped as he went
00:02:25through Darren Kellett and it's an early penalty for obstruction on the kicker
00:02:30and it was a good attacking kick so they look like they've come with lots of
00:02:34invention as I call in co-commentator today the former all-black Laurie Knight
00:02:37I think we're going to see a very close game here this is the pool probably the
00:02:41closest pool with England obviously dominating the pool but the Pumas Manu
00:02:45Samoa and Italy are all in there with a chance for the quarterfinals and I think
00:02:48that with the Manu Samoa side being perhaps the most physical in terms of
00:02:51impacts in the side in the World Cup Italy's going to have to have a lot more
00:02:54discipline than late tackling players at this early stage of the game a good
00:02:58point in the first minute the thrower is Tala Leasa Maivao he's from
00:03:04Wellington and for the Italians number seven is Julian Gardner and it's a
00:03:11short line at call straight away and Nu'u Ali Atiyah away to Leasa Maivao and
00:03:16what a good little burst that was by the hooker and he's a good one too
00:03:21Tala Leasa Maivao
00:03:31now it's the Italian throw and Carlo Orlandi is their hooker
00:03:37that's Judge David McHugh from Ireland and going high there was Fiafalo
00:03:42Pedroni, Troncon away to Dominguez and he's putting the kick in, Kutita is
00:03:48after it but that's a good catch by Brian Lemar
00:03:57not such a good kick right up to the second deck here at the Basil Kenyon
00:04:02Stadium but look out for this guy he was a big star in 91 when he was just a
00:04:06schoolboy into the Manu Samoan team he's now 23 years of age and he is a
00:04:11ton of speed Brian Lemar
00:04:22so it's a free kick there and he wants to speak a bit of a language problem
00:04:29there with the French referee and Italian players and taking it forward
00:04:33Leo Falenico, Mugawale Atiyah, Kellett straight out to Waenga right out on the
00:04:42right wing to Harder and now toed off by Robert Solo number 40 and look at this
00:04:51flyer to Tu'u Waenga there's some real speeches in this Manu Samoa back line
00:04:56yeah I'm surprised they put it wide the tactics lately have been Manu Samoa to have a
00:05:00much more structured game than running at the opposition from the opening they
00:05:02normally take it put some bombs up and take around the side of the balls they
00:05:06don't really want to have the stakes wide out this early in the game referee
00:05:09Dumas is going to come in and have a word with the front row Manu Samoa pack
00:05:14864 K's Italian pack 827 so there's a 40 kilogram weight advantage the Manu Samoa
00:05:20pack well let's see if they can put that to weight advantage and look at there's
00:05:24their big front row Peter Fadiel over to the left then Lea Samaevao and Mike
00:05:28Mika from Otago in New Zealand Keke Nato to the 22-meter line Tatupu is number
00:05:36eight for Manu Samoa trunk on high over the head of Dominguez and there's a drop
00:05:41kick from Bonomi
00:05:48now I think when he dropped the ball and the replay we'll see he might have been
00:05:52facing away from the post and he really let fly this I'm gonna so it's a wild
00:05:55pass he's actually facing away from the post when he gets it but it's a real
00:05:58snapshot and it was a wobbly one but it went very close just went around to the
00:06:04side
00:06:14Roberto Fabaro number five
00:06:18that's the biggest blast on the whistle I've heard for a long time there were
00:06:27hands in there maybe Sheila by falling number six was the man penalized a good
00:06:33jump there by Roberto Fabaro well I'd expect it Italy has to really absorb the
00:06:41aggressive tactic of Manu Samoa that's been their main tactic in their main
00:06:44weapon and I think the Italian side will have to do that the Manu Samoa's
00:06:49also play on pride they're not going to give this away we saw last we saw last
00:06:53night the Tongan side play a man's pride against the French side and we'll see
00:06:57the same this afternoon I'm sure for Manu Samoa this is Diego Dominguez who
00:07:03has the world record share of most penalty goals in a test match with eight
00:07:07so he can land them and there's a bit of a breeze and he set that one out straight
00:07:11and it didn't curve around so that was rather a lame effort I would venture to
00:07:17suggest this early on from Diego Dominguez
00:07:41Troncon back to Dominguez there's the drop kick from Diego Dominguez
00:08:04Italy in the lead Diego Dominguez the drop goal
00:08:12he's a fine kicker that first attempt from the place kicking was rather a lame
00:08:17effort we're going to see the replay I think but there's the kickoff in the in
00:08:20the meantime Italy in the lead over Manu Samoa by three to nil eight minutes gone
00:08:30Troncon, Dominguez
00:08:35this is Mike Umanga the fullback, Noel Aletea
00:08:43the Samoans if they can get some movement going are very dangerous
00:08:47Silla by Foley what a collision that was with number 13 Francescato, Kellett
00:08:59couldn't quite get it to Limat, Faengo again
00:09:05Noel Aletea, Kellett, by Foley, George Hara
00:09:12good tackle again my word that's two good tackles by Francescato
00:09:16Noel Aletea
00:09:20Peter Fatialova caught by Gardner and it's all action isn't it
00:09:25Talal Leas-Maibaou is reaching in the whistle is gone
00:09:30the French referee says they're over the top and blocking it
00:09:34and the man he tapped on the shoulder was Franco Propazi
00:09:39great pressure from Manu Samoa that's a forced error that's the sort of way
00:09:42you win games at this level where the game score is going to be very close
00:09:57some determined tackling little little Diego Dominguez going in there
00:10:01and I think the man coming over the top was number three
00:10:11Darren Kellett he's also a very fine goal kicker he's a left footer he's from Auckland
00:10:17Manu Samoa have suffered some very big losses recently the loss to Australia 73-3
00:10:32and also to South Africa by 60-8 with a good determined beginning today
00:10:38but some early news that's most unlike Darren Kellett he is a very good goal kicker
00:10:47so both number tens starting nervously with their place kicks today Dominguez and Kellett
00:10:54Manu Samoa just returned from a four-match tour of South Africa
00:10:57they had a huge loss to South Africa it didn't do badly against Northern Transvaal and Natal
00:11:02but they also lost the Auckland B-side three weeks ago by two points
00:11:07so they really have to battle it out to establish some ascendancy here
00:11:11the most common opponent in test rugby for the two teams in the last 12 months or so was Australia
00:11:16the Italians stood out there last year and had two very close tests against the Wallabies
00:11:20losing by 23-20 and then 20-7 but the Italians the Samoans were cleaned up 73-3
00:11:29Mike Umunga the fullback
00:11:34Orlandi throws deep to Kekanato, Troncon, Bonomi
00:11:41there comes the big weight and thrust of Manu Samoa, Nuu Aletia
00:11:50and Marcello Cotita and the referee is going in for a penalty there
00:11:59Peter Fatialova wants to hear about that tackle by Brian Lemar
00:12:07I'll have to see that one again on the replay
00:12:10well it was a very close call I'm surprised he pulled a late tackle
00:12:13the man was just in the air as he came down and was hit
00:12:21let's have a look at this again from Lemar
00:12:24well it was high but it wasn't head high
00:12:29so I think there was a rather hairline call there by referee Dumais
00:12:35that's the halfway line we're looking down now
00:12:38Dominguez
00:12:42he's left it short
00:12:44Kellett
00:12:51Vacari
00:12:56good catch the two fullbacks meet
00:12:58Paolo Vacari and Mike Umunga
00:13:08well he skied that one
00:13:12yes he wasn't happy with the kick but the wind which is across the field today
00:13:18takes out this is a good catch lots of courage in these high balls coming down
00:13:23and he kept his cool Mike Umunga see him going back there
00:13:28Paolo Vacari
00:13:30Carlo Orlandi again trying towards Julian Gardner and kicking Nato down at the back
00:13:41Kellett
00:13:43Fa'amassino is left out
00:13:44Vaenga
00:13:46lovely run by Umunga
00:13:48the flying fullback is in
00:13:52Lemar
00:13:53all the super Samoan joy
00:14:09the Italians had possession they lost it
00:14:12fast hands fullback in look at this from Mike Umunga
00:14:16he straightened it up when he came in on the attack
00:14:18a very good fin pushed off the very good tackle of Francescato
00:14:20he kept his head he looked for support he knew he wasn't going to get there himself
00:14:24did a little Campisi there and then outside him to Lemar
00:14:28who then came inside Kutita and flew at the corner
00:14:36yeah that's a class try that's the second time they've gone through in the Italian midfield
00:14:40I'll be a bit worried about the defensive way out wide at this point as far as the Italian skipper
00:14:43that's got the crowd buzzing here at Basel Kenyon Stadium East London a try for Brian Lemar
00:14:50that's got the crowd buzzing here at Basel Kenyon Stadium East London a try for Brian Lemar
00:15:15that's a bit of kick by Kellett
00:15:20Manu Samoa they convert the try by this man Brian Lemar and it's seven to three
00:15:32we can see why players of this class as rugby is under threat in the Pacific Islands
00:15:36the league charts are looking at men like Waienga and Lemar
00:15:50so an up on by the Samoa team referee is speaking in English to both teams
00:16:08an injury stoppage
00:16:11this is a Roberto Favaro the very big veteran lock forward he played in the last World Cup
00:16:17and he's got about 40 caps to his credit
00:16:25neither side has a super line-out jumper in terms of a 2.2 metre player
00:16:30all the jumpers are 1.5, 1.6 and the back jumpers are 1.6
00:16:33so this should be a fairly even line-out tussle
00:16:35but the Manu Samoa scrum is certainly 40kg plus heavier than the Italian scrum today
00:16:40Mike Mika is down in the front row
00:16:47tough hard rugby men
00:17:02Troncon
00:17:04Dominguez fullback Bacardi in
00:17:07Gardner got hit hard
00:17:09Julian Gardner number seven
00:17:11and the referee saw the hands after it hit the floor
00:17:14and right out in front it's a penalty to Italy
00:17:20silly stuff at this level
00:17:22this is this lack of discipline which is going to lose you World Cup games
00:17:25and in the heat of the moment the discipline must be maintained
00:17:28Shem Tatupu
00:17:37have a look for number eight and see if we can see Shem Tatupu
00:17:40there's the ball on the deck now
00:17:44Dominguez
00:17:46through it goes
00:17:48seven to six
00:17:51time gone 17 minutes
00:18:05Diego Dominguez he was
00:18:09Argentinian international but he qualified
00:18:11because his parents are both Italian born
00:18:13so he's played for two nations
00:18:15there's a lot indeed of the players
00:18:17have here
00:18:19in this tournament
00:18:21Tupou Amasina
00:18:23you see there number 12
00:18:25he was a Japan international between the last World Cup and this World Cup
00:18:27Dominguez
00:18:29Dominguez
00:18:31Dominguez
00:18:33Dominguez
00:18:35Dominguez
00:18:37Dominguez
00:18:39Dominguez
00:18:41Carlo Orlandi
00:18:43with Kutita and Proparzi
00:18:54well it's away on the Manu Samoa side
00:18:57thanks to Junior Paramore
00:18:59Kellett
00:19:05non-porous dare there
00:19:08lucky to get away with it Manu Samoa
00:19:11seems to be some trouble in the front row there
00:19:14the referee's not sorting out this quarter time Keith
00:19:17speaking into them now
00:19:26Tekinata Gardner
00:19:28little pass
00:19:30pullback Bacardi up
00:19:32and he got hit hard by Sila Vaifale
00:19:36Brian Lemar
00:19:38the only try scorer so far
00:19:41yeah
00:19:55Kellett
00:19:57Vaenga
00:19:59he's through
00:20:01lovely pass infield
00:20:03Manu Amasina
00:20:06and at the second
00:20:08great try
00:20:09George Harder scores this one
00:20:16it was a hacked kick through to Kellett
00:20:19who had the decision to make whether to kick it to touch or open up
00:20:22he opened up
00:20:23the result is a try for George Harder
00:20:27well not only is there a defence problem wide out there for the Italians
00:20:30but this man's a class footballer
00:20:32three weeks ago in Auckland he rang to the Auckland defence twice
00:20:34and Manu Samoa almost pulled it back from the ring to win the game
00:20:37but lost finally by two points
00:20:39but he's a world class centre
00:20:41Vaenga
00:20:42Fa'amasino
00:20:43and Harder
00:20:44take the pass from Kellett
00:20:45and George Harder scores it
00:20:47there's the lovely delay
00:20:49by Fa'amasino
00:20:51real speed
00:20:53Harder clasps the ball
00:20:54pulls it in with his left hand
00:20:56and over he goes
00:21:01and if Manu Samoa's score tries
00:21:04like this throughout the rest of the series
00:21:07they will prove again
00:21:09to be the most popular team
00:21:10at Rugby World Cup
00:21:12the goal kicker this time from the right hand side of the field
00:21:14is Mike Uman
00:21:28so George Harder from the Te Atatu club in Auckland
00:21:31is the try scorer
00:21:33Western Samoa 12, Italy 6
00:21:37a quarter of this pool B match from East London is over
00:21:51and Manu Samoa two dazzling tries
00:21:54each of the wingers has been in
00:21:5612 points to 6
00:21:58this will do Manu Samoa's confidence
00:22:01no end of good
00:22:03they're a confident side
00:22:04once they get points on the board
00:22:05they're known to play much much better
00:22:06than perhaps the league coming from behind
00:22:08I think Italy's now going to be in for a long hard afternoon
00:22:11Tatupu Baifale is with him
00:22:14Sila Baifale
00:22:15joined now by
00:22:17Daryl Williams
00:22:20and Leo Falanico
00:22:35Leo Falanico
00:22:37the tallest member of the Manu Samoa team
00:22:43locking the scrum with Daryl Williams
00:22:48Troncon
00:22:50Dominguez
00:22:51chasing through is
00:22:52Bonomi
00:22:55things are going pretty well for Manu Samoa
00:22:58that was a good catch again by Umanga
00:23:05there's some surprise with these tactics
00:23:07because they're
00:23:08they had a definite plan to
00:23:10play a much more structured game in the first quarter
00:23:12and that involved not spinning the ball wide
00:23:14but rather taking it up the middle
00:23:15put some bombs
00:23:16some crash balls in the middle of the field
00:23:17then take it back to short zone
00:23:18now they haven't done it today
00:23:19they spun it wide
00:23:20but it certainly played off well for them
00:23:21two wonderful tries
00:23:26thrown deep to the back
00:23:28that's
00:23:30Shem Tatupu
00:23:31waiting out
00:23:32Shem Tatupu
00:23:33waiting out
00:23:35in the backs
00:23:40and that's against
00:23:41Sila Baifale
00:23:43and that's the second time
00:23:44he's played the ball
00:23:45with his hands on the ground
00:23:46and that's the second penalty
00:23:48shot was coming up from Dominguez
00:23:50Sila Baifale
00:23:54he was a star of the 1991 World Cup
00:23:56he had a terrific try he scored
00:23:58against Wales
00:23:59when Western Samoa
00:24:00made their debut
00:24:01and stunned the Welsh
00:24:02on Cardiff Arms Park
00:24:03winning 16 to 13
00:24:07Diogo Dominguez
00:24:17well it's a hard
00:24:18win to judge here
00:24:19it's a cross win
00:24:20and you see
00:24:21he picked the ball up
00:24:22and took it away to the right
00:24:23he's very disappointed
00:24:32there's a large crowd
00:24:33there today Keith
00:24:34for a side
00:24:35which are not involved
00:24:36in South African rugby
00:24:37and it really shows
00:24:38it's the indication
00:24:39of the love of the game
00:24:40in this country
00:24:41by South Africans
00:24:42of all colours
00:24:43yes indeed
00:24:44they're certainly here
00:24:45it's not a big stadium
00:24:46but it must be
00:24:47well over three quarters full
00:24:48and they're in
00:24:49for a treat
00:24:50if we see more tries
00:24:51like we've seen
00:24:52so far from the
00:24:53men in blue
00:24:54Manu Samoa
00:24:55there's their
00:24:56charismatic
00:24:57popular captain
00:24:58Pito Fatialova
00:25:01here's Lima
00:25:02who likes to run straight
00:25:03and they've called him
00:25:04that time
00:25:05for offside
00:25:12Kekanato
00:25:13he's got the ball
00:25:14he's got the ball
00:25:15he's got the ball
00:25:16he's got the ball
00:25:17Kekanato
00:25:37Nwale Atia
00:25:39Paramore
00:25:47that's Mike Mika
00:25:58so that's a call
00:25:59for accidental offside
00:26:00I think
00:26:01from the referee's
00:26:04gesture there
00:26:05banging his fists together
00:26:06so the Italians
00:26:07have the put in
00:26:1225 minutes gone
00:26:13first half
00:26:14Kekanato off the back
00:26:15with him
00:26:17number six
00:26:18Arancho
00:26:22and that's a well judged
00:26:23kick
00:26:24by Diego Dominguez
00:26:28certainly the quality
00:26:29of Italian rugby
00:26:30has picked up over the last
00:26:31four or five years
00:26:32they've had a policy
00:26:33of you know
00:26:34building their club rugby
00:26:35with foreign players
00:26:36of quality
00:26:37and bringing in
00:26:38international coaches
00:26:39from other sides
00:26:40and certainly
00:26:41they've beaten
00:26:42France A
00:26:43and Scotland and Ireland
00:26:44over the last two years
00:26:45but I think today
00:26:46they're obviously
00:26:47a little bit weak
00:26:48in midfield wide out
00:26:49and they're going to
00:26:50battle in the scrums
00:26:51so I think
00:26:52they're in for a
00:26:53difficult time
00:26:56Tala throws
00:26:58Darrell Williams
00:27:01Shem Tatupu
00:27:03Kellett
00:27:04hurrying on to his
00:27:05left side
00:27:09and that's against
00:27:10Gardner
00:27:11offside
00:27:12well I'd say
00:27:13we've seen
00:27:14one world record
00:27:15here today
00:27:16Laurie Knight
00:27:17that's the longest
00:27:18blast on the referee's
00:27:19whistle I've ever heard
00:27:20he really gives it
00:27:21heaps doesn't he
00:27:24he makes a lot of
00:27:25sense when you have
00:27:26a language problem
00:27:27between two sides
00:27:28establishes his
00:27:29authority
00:27:30so here's a kick
00:27:31that hasn't found touch
00:27:32it came in from
00:27:33Robert Solo
00:27:34and the kick
00:27:35is a wee bit aimless
00:27:36but it keeps
00:27:37Manu Samoa back
00:27:38the only man in the
00:27:39picture is
00:27:40Mike Umanga
00:27:42and Paolo
00:27:43Vacardi
00:27:44with a rueful
00:27:45look on his face
00:27:46there has to go
00:27:47all the way back
00:27:48down to the other end
00:27:52I think
00:27:53if we were to see
00:27:54the
00:27:55territorial stakes
00:27:56we'd see that
00:27:57Italy have been
00:27:58down here much
00:27:59more than the
00:28:00other part of the
00:28:01field with the
00:28:02Manu Samoa
00:28:03attack but those
00:28:04two brilliant tries
00:28:05have made the
00:28:06difference on the
00:28:07board
00:28:08it's all about
00:28:09opportunity
00:28:10and taking chances
00:28:11they're rumbling
00:28:12up towards

00:32:07Well, Peter Fats is penalised there. Back he goes.
00:32:14He missed a couple of games on the South African Tour, did Peter Fats, as they call him.
00:32:21But he's very much back as the leader today.
00:32:25His place in the scrum was under pressure. It was felt that he didn't perform well against Northern Transvaal and Natal.
00:32:30They took him out for the game against Transvaal, which Manus Omar won 13-12.
00:32:34But he played for his place in the Manus Omar-Auckland game.
00:32:37And the Manus Omar pack dominated the Auckland pack just slightly that day.
00:32:40And they were obviously happy with his form, and they brought him back.
00:32:43Not just as captain, but also in his form in the front row.
00:32:47Diego Dominguez.
00:32:50Former Italian captain for a couple of games last year.
00:32:53And there's that wind, picking it up and taking it to the right.
00:32:59Occupying a bit of time here, just running it up to the corner.
00:33:08You'd have to say it's a bit of a stop-start game at this point, Keith.
00:33:11It's not really flowing either way. Line-outs are very even, and scrums have been squared.
00:33:19Manus Omar have scored two good tries.
00:33:22They lead by 12-6 inside the last 10 minutes of the first half.
00:33:29There it is, 74% of the time in this half so far, the Italians have been on attack.
00:33:35But the scoreboard doesn't reflect that.
00:33:38Gardner.
00:33:46Troncon. Gardner found space.
00:33:50Coutinho the captain. Goal line in behind.
00:33:53Troncon again, another drop-kick perhaps. Now they're passing it.
00:33:56This one. Francescato was through, but it was hit hard by Kellett.
00:34:00And the ball jolted clear.
00:34:03A couple of knock-ons there.
00:34:06And it's in.
00:34:09It's in.
00:34:12And it's in.
00:34:15And it's in.
00:34:19Well, that's the best period of structured forward pressure Italy's put together in this game.
00:34:23A couple of driving balls up the middle, keeping it tight, pulling the mass of our players and spinning it wide.
00:34:27But they had a forced area wide-out. That's good football.
00:34:38Collapse at the front row.
00:34:49Aguero.
00:35:03That's a surprising problem for the Mata Savar pack to have.
00:35:06They're 40 kilograms heavier and the Italians wield them at ease there.
00:35:11It's a tight head start to stop the scrambling.
00:35:14It's a free-kick.
00:35:18Troncon, Dominguez, Kutita.
00:35:27Well, they're disappointed with that one.
00:35:30Yes, you must score from those positions if you're going to win games at this World Cup.
00:35:33You don't get possession 10 metres to the opposite of the line and fritter it away with a silly knock-on like that.
00:35:38So a chance for Manu Samoa to clear. They may just run it.
00:35:41Remember, they can be very good with the unexpected.
00:35:44He wanted to run it. They might get into trouble.
00:35:47And there is the kick.
00:35:50I think by sending it out to Tupou Amasino,
00:35:53there was an indication they wanted to run rather than pass it originally to this man, Darren Kellett.
00:35:58Kellett got it in the end for the clearance.
00:36:01He's been on the team for three seasons now. He plays at the Counties Union in South Auckland.
00:36:05I'm surprised with these tactics, Keith.
00:36:08They really have moved over the last years to a much more structured and careful approach.
00:36:12And really, that's going back to Manu Samoa football of five years ago.
00:36:15There's a bit of support for Fabaro, but he's allowed to be supported at the top of the jump.
00:36:20And he lost it over the back. That's a knock-on.
00:36:24That's against Kekanato, I think.
00:36:27Just judging by the way they all whip their heads around.
00:36:53The Apollo Pedroni there.
00:36:56Watford, who went home from the Tour of Australia last year with a bad leg break.
00:37:01Let's have a look and see what this is about.
00:37:04Look at Kekanato. Yes, he's detached there.
00:37:07And not bound to the scrum.
00:37:10Could be referee Joel Dumais.
00:37:13That's well pulled in for Manu Samoa by Leo Falanica.
00:37:23Kellett. Tatupu.
00:37:26Taking the crash ball up. They've got a couple of slim fellas in midfield.
00:37:29So they're maybe going to use some of the loose men for the crash balls.
00:37:32Troncon. Kutita.
00:37:38I don't know if it's a good idea for Prop Forge to be out there.
00:37:41Massimo Kutita, his twin brother, is a winger.
00:37:44But he was rather in the way that time.
00:37:46The other twin brothers, incidentally, have played in Rugby World Cup.
00:37:49Pedro and Juan Lanza from Argentina.
00:37:52And Alan and Gary Whetton from New Zealand.
00:37:58Kekanato. Troncon. Lovely pass and no one.
00:38:01Fumbled by Robert Solo.
00:38:06And he was hit hard by Harden.
00:38:10Kellett.
00:38:14Not to say there's more unforced errors on both sides at this stage of the game
00:38:17than one would expect from sides of this class.
00:38:20Again, a try-scoring opportunity for the Italians.
00:38:23Lost because the man took his eye off the ball.
00:38:26Looked at the fullback coming towards him.
00:38:30Lineouts are close.
00:38:33Carlo Olandi.
00:38:36Advantage signals referee Dumais.
00:38:39Referee Joel Dumais from France.
00:38:42Nice pat on the backside from Nuala Etea
00:38:45to get the ball moving forward.
00:38:52Back for his team.
00:38:55Nuala Etea. Kellett.
00:38:58That probing for that outside gap.
00:39:01Francescato pulled him down. Here's Umanga.
00:39:04He looked like he wanted to come in again there.
00:39:07It's on the Italian side.
00:39:10Cutita. Lovely try.
00:39:13Much shallow Cutita.
00:39:32It came off a Manu Samoa attack when they lost the ball.
00:39:35One pass and Cutita was away.
00:39:39He fended off Vaenga.
00:39:42And there's a cross in Lima's tackle.
00:39:45Francescato with the pass here.
00:39:48In a desperate situation.
00:39:51Vaenga came at him. A very good fend. Look at that.
00:39:54And bang. Try for Italy.
00:39:57I think this is a result really
00:40:00of running the ball wide on your own 25
00:40:03and losing their ball with a turnover.
00:40:07And that's the risk you take if you're going to play expansive football
00:40:10under pressure in your 25.
00:40:13It may come off, but you also stand a chance of getting tries like this
00:40:16from broken players scored against you.
00:40:19That wasn't a bad kick by Dominguez.
00:40:22It's away. He's kicking from some very wet part of the field off to the side.
00:40:25And a good pass by Francescato got it started.
00:40:28The try is unconverted.
00:40:31And it's Samoa now in the lead by 12 to 11.
00:40:34It's a bit messy and a lot of mistakes.
00:41:04Tronc on.
00:41:07Dominguez.
00:41:10Wanomi coming through.
00:41:13Umanga.
00:41:16A loose ball claimed and there by Vaenga.
00:41:19Nu'ualetia.
00:41:22To Uvaenga.
00:41:25And it's in.
00:41:28And it's in.
00:41:32Nu'ualetia to Uvaenga.
00:41:50Poor last scrum by Manos Samoa.
00:41:53They're pushed a good 10 metres backward by the Italian side.
00:41:5640kg lighter.
00:42:00And a kick in Nato.
00:42:03Caught by Nu'ualetia.
00:42:06And the referee being consistent there.
00:42:09It happened earlier in the game that he stopped Manos Samoa
00:42:12from colliding with one of their own players ahead.
00:42:30It is definitely a problem on the tighthead side here.
00:42:33I'm not certain who's having the problem.
00:42:36But they're constantly spinning to the right, Manos Samoa.
00:42:43Just one point in it.
00:42:46Manos Samoa are leading.
00:42:49The whistle's gone again.
00:42:52And the penalty is against Pita Fatialofa.
00:42:59Well, the try seems to spark the Italians into action.
00:43:02Another penalty could come for Troncon.
00:43:05Dominguez.
00:43:08Very good run by Orancio.
00:43:11Lost forward.
00:43:22And there it is. Half time.
00:43:25Two tries to one.
00:43:28Then he caught a player.
00:43:31And Joel Dominguez from France.
00:43:34Of course he gains a kind of distinction
00:43:37or notoriety, whichever way you look at it,
00:43:40by sending off John Davies in the Wales England game this year.
00:43:43That was a courageous decision.
00:43:46It was based on the report from his touch judge, Patrick Robin.
00:43:49He listened to Mr. Robin and agreed
00:43:52that he should take action and sent the player from the field.
00:43:58So it's a chilly afternoon and a breezy one in East London as the second half
00:44:08gets underway with a Darren Kellett kick and a fumble by the two of the Italian
00:44:13team there, Orlandi and Gardner. Three tries in the first half, two to Manu
00:44:18Samoa and that's given them a 12 to 11 lead. Now they're rumbling on close to
00:44:22the Italian line but it's on the Italian side Paolo Vacari. Well the first move of
00:44:35the game sees another unforced error and that's really been the chapter of the
00:44:38first half. I suspect the concentration level may have been a bit high with
00:44:42nerves there to start with but by this stage these players should have settled
00:44:45down. Carlo Checcanato, Silvio Vaifale both at the last World Cup and that's
00:44:55Junior Paramore who is at the last World Cup as well and played for New Zealand
00:44:58at the Sevens game in between. Tupou Fa'amassino, Tala Leasamaiva, 22-meter
00:45:06line up top right and it's Mike Mika who's in there leading the charge
00:45:14joining as Junior Paramore and they can really control it now. Here it is back to
00:45:21Umanga up, Lima, the locked Leo Falonico again, Nu'u Aletea trying to get his
00:45:30pass away, there's big Darrell Williams number five, Nu'u Aletea, Calot, Fa'amassino,
00:45:38Fa'enga, well the question is could he have given it to Harder? Umanga, Shem Tatupu
00:45:46was back there, the Italians not playing with the ball at all in this piece of
00:45:49play and now George Harder has mauled it. Nu'u Aletea, an intercept taken by Bonomi
00:46:00a great period of structured pressure football by Manasamara, they took it up
00:46:04the middle, this is what they've been doing over the last couple years, kept it
00:46:07tight, they spun it wide when they ran out of numbers, quieten it down then put
00:46:10it back to left-hand side. Fa'enga just failed to make it into a classical
00:46:13structured try but that's good structured and correct international
00:46:18football.
00:46:30Umanga takes it from full-back, Dominguez has him.
00:46:51Therefore handed over to Manasamara for the put-in, Orlandi there the hooker and
00:46:57there's two props, Properzi and Massimo Cutita, the two captains in the front row
00:47:02opposite each other.
00:47:10It's pretty good Italian scrum and Massimo Cutita here is giving Peter
00:47:15Fanti-Lev a lot of bother.
00:47:19Another huge blast from referee Joel Dumais and it's a free-kick.
00:47:30Troncon, Orlandi, Massimo Cutita, Quecanato, Gardner. Short passing, a bit
00:47:39slow, Troncon, Dominguez.
00:47:44That was Ravazzolo and another free-kick for the Italian team for a deliberate
00:47:50knockdown. Dominguez, Francescato, the former scrum-half, he's a very talented
00:47:56player. Umanga is back.
00:48:02Look at that water just off the field, the field was very wet over there. Here's Ivan Francescato, one of four
00:48:09brothers from Italy to play for their country. They say he cried in the
00:48:13dressing room when he finally was awarded his Italian cap four years ago
00:48:17to make all the brothers in the family Italian representatives.
00:48:24Now Falonico I think has had a good game today. He's featured one or two times in
00:48:29the Open, certainly at line-out time. Yeah that was a golden line-out for Italy.
00:48:34You must win those line-outs when you're opposition 25. You don't get a lot of
00:48:37them. You must win them and you must turn 50% of that ball into points. If you're
00:48:41going to win these games and win your serious games in the World Cup, those are
00:48:44the line-outs you must win and turn into points.
00:48:46Arancho, number six.
00:48:55Basil Kenyon Stadium in East London, 12-11, Manu Samoa lead over Italy. It's
00:49:00anybody's game. Salah throws it into a shortened line-out and away goes Pedroni.
00:49:07The Italians have got this one well covered. Where's the referee? Again, players
00:49:12were going over the top. Unforced error, totally unnecessary. They had that ball
00:49:19under control. This is silly stuff by the Italian footballers. They let themselves
00:49:22down in the last couple of moves when they did so well in the first half.
00:49:26Roboto Favaro is going back. It's a pretty soft field over on this side.
00:49:37Just a hint to throughout the first half and the early part of the second
00:49:49that Darren Kellett may be having trouble with the thigh injury. Peter
00:49:54Fadiel over. Tank smash. Up he goes.
00:49:58Nu'ualetia, Kellett, Tu'uwaenga, Tupou Fa'amassino. That's gone to Bonomi.
00:50:13Nu'ualetia, good pass to Hara. The sides of the field are pretty slippery.
00:50:18Mike Umaga is up from fullback. Nu'ualetia, Kellett, kicking wide for
00:50:27Limar. Slow to turn to Favaro and Limar.
00:50:35Two for Brian Limar.
00:50:40Questions to be asked, however, was a big lock out there. He obviously was slow to
00:50:45come back across field and it was an easy one for Limar for a second and a
00:50:50good kick through by Kellett. I think we might find on the replay that it was off
00:50:54his right foot, where he is mostly left foot player, although I'm willing to look at
00:50:58this one. There it is. Yeah, it's off the right. But there was a big lock forward
00:51:02out there and a prop. The Italians are all over the park at the moment. The
00:51:05bounce is a slippery part of the field. Limar got it and he's pretty good at
00:51:09finishing. That's the second try for Brian Limar and three tries all by the
00:51:13wingers. The try came after period sustained pressure. They had three or
00:51:16four malls there. They had good ball retention. Couldn't break it through but
00:51:20eventually pushed it wide. That's the first time Kellett's put a cross field
00:51:22kick in today. He's often played games putting 10-15 bombs and cross field
00:51:26kicks up. Of interest, he hasn't used a bomb yet and I would have thought
00:51:29that would be a good move to test the Italian fullback once or twice with these
00:51:33big Manu Samar forwards coming down on top of him.
00:51:45Yes, he still might be struggling. He's got that thigh bandage on. We've seen him
00:51:49press his fingers into the thigh area a couple of times but the try extremely
00:51:54well taken. Nine minutes gone second half and three tries to Manu Samar's
00:51:59wingers. They lead by 17 to 11 but they're not out of into any comfort area
00:52:03yet until he could still get the lead with a converted strike back. Dominguez
00:52:09kicks out. Wow, that one well and truly cleared the touchline. See how the
00:52:18Italians dominated territory in the first half but not so far in the first
00:52:2210 minutes of the second. This is a golden scrum for Manu Samar. They can go
00:52:26either side or take it around and roll it down the side. It's a perfect
00:52:30opportunity to launch a major attack.
00:52:41Gardner gets across. It was a good tackle by Marcello Cutita when Lima looked
00:52:48they'll be heading for three. Trouble. Valkyrie and the referee I don't think
00:52:57should be jumping in like that but Paolo Valkyrie. The touch judge has his flag
00:53:02out.
00:53:11Paolo Valkyrie. Yes, I think it's going to be against the blue player first.
00:53:18It's of interest to see all the handlers in this year's World Cup are
00:53:28wearing rubber gloves Keith. That's something we haven't seen before and a
00:53:31very practical thing in the in the current situation right throughout the
00:53:35world. Dr. Laurie Knight speaking to us from the
00:53:38commentary box today. Former All Black and a doctor as well. There's the flag out
00:53:41from David McHugh, the Irish touch judge. Some changes of jersey in the background.
00:53:48Those golden scrubs in midfield Keith, they're great opportunities to go either
00:53:52way. You can always put one man extra in the opposition because the opposition
00:53:55doesn't know which way you're going to go and Mane Samoa used that golden scrum
00:53:59to perfection and just missed that try by by metres. I thought the Italians in
00:54:03fact held that ball in and we're going to be penalised for holding and not
00:54:05releasing it. So I was a little bit surprised. I think perhaps the penalty
00:54:08was against the vigorous play rather than the man going over the top. Brian
00:54:12Lima was the injured player. That would be sad if there was anything serious
00:54:14wrong with him. He looked like he was going to scoot away for three and he'd
00:54:19be one of the fastest wingers, one of the fastest players at this year's Rugby
00:54:24World Cup. Dominguez makes the clearance. 17 to 11, Mane Samoa are in the lead.
00:54:3111 minutes gone, second half.
00:54:36Orlandi throws, a bit of volleyball there. Quecanada was number eight, Putita number
00:54:48one. Now Dominguez, steady play, working it up the touchline. See how wet it is down
00:54:55there.
00:55:07Halfway line to the right, Pita Fatialova against Pia Paolo Pedroni,
00:55:14Darryl Williams. Mike Mika jumped well at the front.
00:55:36So here's a chance for Mane Samoa. Do they want to take it quick and try to catch
00:55:42the Italians off guard? Yeah, that's the first time, one of the first times that
00:55:51Mane Samoa have used the crash ball with a big number seven standing out the
00:55:55midfield. That's been one of their tactics common over the last few years.
00:55:57It certainly served them well.
00:56:06Three tries to one, all the tries scored by wingers today.
00:56:11Tala throws nicely to Williams. Sorry, that was Faloniko again, number four.
00:56:17Shemta Tupu at the crash ball, couldn't quite get it away cleanly to
00:56:22Fa'amacino. Nuu Aletea to Uvaenga, the chase is on.
00:56:31Marcello Kutita and Lima threw again on it. Good battle out there on the wing
00:56:36between these two fine players, Marcello Kutita and Brian Lima.
00:56:41Must have been very close to taking it. It is, it's a five-yard scrum.
00:56:47Great scoring opportunity here for Mane Samoa. It's tight against the touchline so
00:56:53they've got to come to the left. They might move it across to make a better
00:56:56position. Good scrum by the Italians. Tupu. Shemta Tupu.
00:57:15The crowd are enjoying the tries by Mane Samoa and their fourth try is for the
00:57:22number eight forward from Auckland, Shemta Tupu. You'd have to say the
00:57:27Italians here, in fact, sated the Mane Samoa scrum. Controlling it, the Mane
00:57:32Samoa going for the eight-man sub. They certainly went backwards on that one and
00:57:35Tepepe took the right option, picked it up and crashed over. So here's the second
00:57:43look at it. The big scrum was coming in from the Italians and Tupu broke
00:57:47away. Continued to drive hard even after he was back on to the goalpost and drove
00:57:56over.
00:58:01Shemta Tupu, a member of the Auckland representative team in New Zealand in
00:58:05recent years and that's no mean feat. For a while he was contemplating making
00:58:11himself available for New Zealand but the rules have changed in recent times
00:58:15and there's now a stand-down period of much longer for players who wish to
00:58:20change countries, which is a good move I believe, otherwise we have players
00:58:24chopping and change every season and there are a number in this game who
00:58:27played for more than one country. Now we see at a provincial level too, we've seen
00:58:31it in South Africa where it's happened, I'm sure it's happened throughout the
00:58:34world, but it certainly doesn't provoke a sense of loyalty or a spirit of the
00:58:39rugby, which is still part of the game even in this era of
00:58:42professionalism.
00:58:45Darren Kellett
00:58:49Just one conversion today from him.
00:59:05So Kellett with a conversion attempt, that's one he's bent in and over it goes.
00:59:10And that's a good lead now for Manu Samoa.
00:59:15Yes, the Italians have to score twice.
00:59:18Here we see Tepu going over again, good driving run, crashing over.
00:59:22The Italians now have to score twice and I think if I was Kellett, I would start putting the ball up,
00:59:28put bombs and put pressure on the Italian backfield defence.
00:59:34Here's the man who scored the try, Shemta Tupu, lays it with his socks down in a distinctive way.
00:59:41If you're wondering about the points situation for these pools, when you win a game in the Rugby World Cup,
00:59:50you take three points, your team gets two for a draw and one point for, if you like, turning up but losing.
00:59:57Troncon, looks like the Italians are in for one point at the moment.
01:00:04And that's a penalty for Manu Samoa, they tackle one of the players without the ball.
01:00:11Now it's Leo Falenica who's down and they're being invited to the sideline.
01:00:23With modern rugby there's really no place for these late tackles.
01:00:25We have two line umpires who can pick it up and notify the referee and invariably you're going to give away a penalty
01:00:31and it seems little point to players of international stature doing these stupid things out in the open.
01:00:37So down to 14 men at the moment.
01:00:45Halfway line to the right.
01:00:48Just harking back to the points that are available for play in these matches.
01:00:52Three for a win, two for a draw, one for a loss.
01:00:54There are no points awarded in a game if one of the teams does not agree to the terms of the game
01:00:59or the match is abandoned.
01:01:03And that's a penalty for Manu Samoa.
01:01:07And that's a penalty for Manu Samoa.
01:01:09There are no points awarded in a game if one of the teams does not agree to the terms of the game
01:01:13or the match is abandoned.
01:01:24So it looks like Leo Falenica is in some sort of trouble with a leg injury and he's hobbling to the side
01:01:30that could put Potut Leovasar on and there he is.
01:01:35He's also a very experienced player, Potut Leovasar.
01:01:40And a very good game by Leo Falenica, the big basketball player.
01:01:44He used to play with the Oriental Rongotite Club in Wellington and he hobbles to the sideline.
01:01:51Potut Leovasar is actually the replacement who's on the field.
01:01:57Alessandro Troncon, Diego Dominguez, Paolo Vacari.
01:02:02The Italians are trying to find a way through here.
01:02:04Well behind on the scoreboard.
01:02:06Troncon again.
01:02:08And there's Kutita, the captain.
01:02:11N'Oualetia got him.
01:02:13Troncon again.
01:02:14This is about the third phase.
01:02:15Bonomi, hit by Tupou Fahamassina.
01:02:36So Potut Leovasar is on.
01:02:40From Apia.
01:02:49Nice ball out to Bonomi, Paolo Vacari, Marcello Kutita.
01:02:56Disappointment there for the South African born player Marcello Kutita.
01:03:00Remember back in the 87 World Cup he scored a thrilling try, a great try in fact,
01:03:04against the Parkland Christchurch, against Argentina.
01:03:11I think it was voted the best try of the 87 tournament.
01:03:16I think John Kerbin's try actually scored against the Italians and voted the best try of the 87 tournament.
01:03:24But pretty good Laurie, there's some excellent tries over the years in Rugby World Cup and a couple of good ones here today.
01:03:30Manu Samoa in the lead by 24 to 11.
01:03:35That's a central kick.
01:03:37Now here's Marcello Kutita with Lima closing in.
01:03:40And he's skied that one upfield.
01:03:43Well taken by Tala Leasamaybal, Williams, Tatupu.
01:03:49Oh that'll be a knock on from Paramore to Vaifale.
01:03:54You can fumble it forward and catch it again yourself.
01:03:57But if it goes forward and is caught by somebody else it's a knock on.
01:04:00And there's Peter Fadilova.
01:04:01Congratulations from him to Tala Leasamaybal.
01:04:1221 minutes gone, second half.
01:04:14Dominguez.
01:04:21Well even with the Italian flair they're not prepared to run it inside their 25.
01:04:24They're playing an international.
01:04:26They still think they're worth a chance to win.
01:04:28That's sensible football by their fly half.
01:04:30He's kicked six times in past seven.
01:04:37The game really hasn't got going at this stage, Keith.
01:04:39The ebb and flow's sort of been lacking.
01:04:41It's a bit stop and start.
01:04:43Do you think it's probably due to the wet ball?
01:04:45Well it's wet on the side of the field, Laurie.
01:04:47There's a lot of water down here, isn't there?
01:04:51Boy, big blast from the referee from Mr. Dumet just for the free kicks.
01:04:55He's done it pretty well today.
01:04:56Peter Fadilova.
01:04:58Back goes Favaro.
01:05:01Sinovae Fale.
01:05:05Tala.
01:05:26Favaro.
01:05:35Pulling them all down.
01:05:37The penalty against Franco Properzi.
01:05:42And Darren Keller just encouraged them a shot for goal here.
01:05:46This is the right option.
01:05:48At this point Manu Samar should think of just closing this game down.
01:05:50Taking as much possession as they can on their own ball
01:05:52and just keeping it tight and driving it.
01:05:54They've got nothing more to do.
01:05:56They've won this round of the World Cup.
01:06:01Quite a tough schedule for the Samoans.
01:06:03They play here today on Saturday
01:06:05and then the next game is on Tuesday.
01:06:07Also here on this ground against the Pumas of Argentina.
01:06:11So they've got two games in four days.
01:06:27Darren Kellett from 45 metres.
01:06:32And through it goes.
01:06:34Closing the game down.
01:06:36Well struck by Kellett.
01:06:3827 to 11.
01:06:43And 24 minutes gone second half.
01:06:50Well the Italians, Keith, now they've got to open it up.
01:06:52They've got nothing to lose.
01:06:54They're going to have to move it.
01:06:56They're going to have to put bombs.
01:06:58They're going to have to spin at every opportunity.
01:07:00But I think at this point if the Manu Samoans
01:07:02keep on just that slight dominance
01:07:04they've got in the forward pack
01:07:06they're home with ease.
01:07:08Taken in by Mike Meeker,
01:07:10very prominent member of the Otago rugby team
01:07:12in the south of New Zealand.
01:07:14Remember for those of you watching
01:07:16from outside the Pacific,
01:07:18very big Samoan population in Auckland
01:07:20and in other parts of New Zealand.
01:07:23Contributing strongly to this team.
01:07:25Troncon.
01:07:27Dominguez.
01:07:29A floated pass which has bounced to Francescato.
01:07:32Ivan Francescato.
01:07:34Alessandra Troncon.
01:07:36Diego Dominguez.
01:07:38Paolo Bacardi.
01:07:40Julian Gardner.
01:07:42Massimo Bonomi inside the 22 metre line.
01:07:44Troncon again.
01:07:46Diego Dominguez,
01:07:48they have tried to open it up
01:07:50and move it by hand.
01:07:52Here they go again.
01:07:54Goal line in the background.
01:08:0027 to 11.
01:08:02Troncon again.
01:08:04Probing for space.
01:08:06Favaro steps over them all.
01:08:09Kekkanato.
01:08:11Carlo Kekkanato.
01:08:13Troncon.
01:08:15Dominguez.
01:08:17Ravazzolo.
01:08:19Penalty there, they'll take it.
01:08:21Going for the seven pointer.
01:08:22Goal for Massimo Bonomi.
01:08:24In goes a big hit from Manu Samoa.
01:08:26Troncon again.
01:08:28Alessandra Troncon lost it.
01:08:31And the referee is right in
01:08:33to see the try scored by Paolo Bacardi.
01:08:47Well that whole movement initially started
01:08:49from a very good turnover
01:08:50by Attlee on the halfway line
01:08:52when they robbed Darrell Williams
01:08:54of the ball and spun it wide.
01:08:56Here comes the last part.
01:08:58The referee has called out
01:09:00number 11 George Harder
01:09:02from Manu Samoa.
01:09:04Let's have a look and see what happened here.
01:09:09And he's right on time,
01:09:11right there to see the try scored
01:09:13and there is George Harder called out.
01:09:15It was for a head high tackle.
01:09:21So that's a warning from referee Joel Dumais
01:09:24for George Harder.
01:09:26It was for a head high tackle.
01:09:28Through goes the conversion
01:09:30from Diego Dominguez
01:09:32and at 27 to 18
01:09:34we're going to see an exciting last 10 minutes.
01:09:36The offense by Harder must have been further out.
01:09:38Referee is pointing already there
01:09:40has identified him.
01:09:42Troncon
01:09:44lost it
01:09:46and Bacardi.
01:09:5140 minutes to play.
01:09:53The Manu Samoa team
01:09:55wouldn't like to let this slip away
01:09:57with another score against them.
01:10:09So Darren Kellett kicks out.
01:10:11Notice how he just went across
01:10:13and over the halfway line.
01:10:17That seems to be allowed.
01:10:18Kick it more or less
01:10:20near the halfway center spot.
01:10:23Robert Solo took his eye off the ball.
01:10:26Fa'amassino
01:10:28more by Fatih Alofa.
01:10:31Mike Mika has it there.
01:10:49That's a forced error on the Italian side.
01:10:51That's what the Manu Samoa
01:10:53decides to do.
01:10:55Just retain the ball
01:10:57move it slightly upfield
01:10:59make the opposition have to get it off you.
01:11:01They're the ones that will make the forced errors.
01:11:03The forced errors lead to the technical penalties.
01:11:05This will help them keep the game tight.
01:11:07And they're going to have the shot at goal.
01:11:10They feel that Kellett can get it from there
01:11:12but also it occupies a bit of time.
01:11:15Time is of the essence of course.
01:11:16With 28 minutes gone now.
01:11:31So there's George Harder in the background
01:11:33who had that warning
01:11:35for the head high tackle.
01:11:46That's another mishit by Kellett.
01:11:48I don't think he's 100 percent.
01:11:51Vacardi the try scorer
01:11:53touching down.
01:11:55Yes, his previous drop out from the halfway
01:11:57was also a poor effort.
01:11:59I think he must be suffering from the leg
01:12:01because it's just the Manu Samoa
01:12:03running right onto that ball at kickoff.
01:12:06So the Italians still have to chance their arm here.
01:12:09But this is an orthodox kick out by Dominguez.
01:12:11He's got the ball
01:12:13he's got the ball
01:12:14and it's an orthodox kick out by Dominguez.
01:12:16And it's kicked away now by Orlandi.
01:12:18And Orlandi has got the bounce but lost it.
01:12:44Massimo Bonami
01:12:46that's a good half break.
01:12:48But the Italians
01:12:50have lost it to Manu Samoa.
01:12:53Nu'ualia Tia
01:12:55pushing with this
01:12:57the kick.
01:13:00Gutita back with Vacardi.
01:13:02Lima closing quickly.
01:13:05Paolo Vacardi.
01:13:15Manu Samoa will be pleased with that.
01:13:17They've donated the line outs.
01:13:1914 to 9.
01:13:26Portu Liavasar
01:13:28tapped the ball
01:13:30taken by Sila Vaifale
01:13:32into Shem Tatupu.
01:13:34Straight at the smallest man on the field
01:13:36which is not a bad way to go.
01:13:38And now it's gone
01:13:40to the Italian.
01:13:41Here's Sila Vaifale.
01:13:45Fatilo Vamica it was.
01:13:47Farmacino
01:13:49the way as well blocked ahead.
01:14:03No mention there from the referee
01:14:05what that was for.
01:14:07Vacardi, Gutita.
01:14:09You can sense that the Italians
01:14:11are clock watching
01:14:13and they're
01:14:15running it much more
01:14:17in the last desperate minutes.
01:14:19They need to score at least twice.
01:14:22And Vacardi a word to the touch judge there.
01:14:26Inside the last 10 minutes.
01:14:37Well it's surprising that Manu Samoa
01:14:39have dominated the line outs
01:14:41almost 2 to 1.
01:14:43Considering both line out forwards
01:14:45or the size of the line out forwards
01:14:47or even I think it probably comes down
01:14:49to understanding with the hooker.
01:14:51We saw the other day in the Australian
01:14:53South African opening match
01:14:55the dominance of the Australian side
01:14:57against the South African side.
01:14:59But apparently after match comment
01:15:01has been that the throwing in wasn't
01:15:03quite up to standard.
01:15:04There's no major difference in size
01:15:06in the line out forward.
01:15:08So it's vitally important the hooker
01:15:10is accurate with his throws.
01:15:15Peter Fadielova back in the front row.
01:15:17The 36 year old
01:15:19along with
01:15:21Mark Sesse on the last international players
01:15:23still playing who were born in the 50s.
01:15:27And that's Vacardi getting it away.
01:15:29He's tried very hard from fullback
01:15:31Paolo Vacardi.
01:15:32A very experienced player.
01:15:34He was at the last World Cup as well.
01:15:3926 caps for his country.
01:15:49That was Shem Tatupu
01:15:51who got the catch there.
01:15:53Unchallenged really.
01:15:5540 metres out.
01:15:59Nu'u Aletea.
01:16:00There's the high hoist.
01:16:02Let's test Vacardi.
01:16:04And he did it well.
01:16:06He's having a good one as Paolo Vacardi
01:16:08does a Sardonian.
01:16:10Takes a quick tap.
01:16:12Troncon. Dominguez.
01:16:14Troncon again to Francescata
01:16:16the former scrum half.
01:16:18To Gardner.
01:16:20Paolo Vacardi up again.
01:16:22The Italians are desperate.
01:16:24And Kutita, Massimo Kutita
01:16:26away but the ball
01:16:28knocked to the ground.
01:16:30Troncon.
01:16:32Well that's the first bomb
01:16:34we've seen from Kellett
01:16:36and certainly the Italian fullback
01:16:38was right up to the task.
01:16:40No problems whatsoever.
01:16:46A free kick against
01:16:48to Un'u Aletea
01:16:50and some back chat
01:16:52and away goes Troncon.
01:16:54There's Hooker Orlandi.
01:16:56And the Italians
01:16:58get another penalty.
01:17:00Bit of a professional foul
01:17:02coming in there from the Samoan team.
01:17:04Gardner.
01:17:06Kekkanata lost again.
01:17:08Lost forward.
01:17:10Well those two penalties resulted
01:17:12from forced errors.
01:17:14I think the Manu Samoa front row
01:17:16is under pressure
01:17:18and the halfback tried to help them out
01:17:20put the side under pressure
01:17:22by giving away that initial penalty.
01:17:23The Italians taking their chances
01:17:25at this point
01:17:27and I wouldn't be surprised
01:17:29to see them add another 7 points
01:17:31in the last 4-5 minutes of the game.
01:17:37So there's a free kick.
01:17:39Now they haven't retired 10 metres.
01:17:41The game becoming a bit of a shambles here.
01:17:45It's lost its shape
01:17:47shall we say.
01:17:50Silo Vaifale
01:17:52up to half way.
01:17:54Turned over quickly for
01:17:56Nu'u Aliatia.
01:17:58Kellett the left foot drive.
01:18:00Paulo Vaccari
01:18:02the race for the ball
01:18:04and oh it touched the corner flag
01:18:06and stayed on the money side
01:18:08as far as
01:18:10Manu Samoa are concerned
01:18:12and I think
01:18:14well what happens when the ball hits the corner flag
01:18:16what does the rule book say
01:18:18it looks like it's a 22.
01:18:19As it did deflect off the flag
01:18:21and stay on the good side of the field
01:18:23not into the dead ball area.
01:18:25Let's look at it again.
01:18:27Touches the flag
01:18:29and the referee has ruled a drop out to 22.
01:18:37Here's the reverse angle look.
01:18:40Well it looked to me like it went into touch
01:18:43but there'll be someone in the
01:18:45somewhere in the law books
01:18:47to rule about hitting the corner flags.
01:18:50Robert Solo
01:18:57Massimo Robert Solo
01:18:59Apparently the law is
01:19:01it's out in goal when the ball hits the corner flag.
01:19:03So all the referees
01:19:05getting their note paper and pencils out
01:19:07can relax.
01:19:10And the referee
01:19:12says
01:19:14it's a 22.
01:19:16And the referee says
01:19:18it's a 22.
01:19:20And the referee says
01:19:22it's a 22.
01:19:24And the referee says
01:19:26it's a 22.
01:19:29Newell et al away to Kellett
01:19:31kicking for the corner again.
01:19:33Let's check this one.
01:19:34This one's gone over the end goal area.
01:19:37These are the right options for Manu Samara.
01:19:39They're comfortably winning their own
01:19:41line out ball at this point in time.
01:19:43And Kellett's is kicking the ball down to the dead area
01:19:45pushing pressure on Etikai.
01:19:47They have to make the play.
01:19:49Manu Samara's happy just to play out time.
01:19:51That's what they're doing.
01:19:53There was offside play at
01:19:55that previous point
01:19:56on the field and it's going to be a shot at goal and again the shot at goal is to do with occupying
01:20:03time as well as being an attempt for points. You'd have to say this game's been a bit of
01:20:08a stop-start affair Keith it hasn't really risen to any great heights we've seen some
01:20:11individualistic brilliance from the Waienga primarily and setting up those two early
01:20:17tries from Manasama but really it's it's been a primarily scrappy game with little constructed
01:20:23football
01:20:42good kick fine kick by Darren Callaghan
01:20:47his fourth goal today 30 to 18
01:20:59well that means the Manasama team are well and clear now here's the last
01:21:04incident the referee saw them standing offside there at the side now the kickoff
01:21:17and he was over the quarter line picked by touch judge David McHugh
01:21:34let's have a look you see the line there yes he was touching the line and so that's
01:21:41outside the zone of the 22-meter lines and so his kick being out the full goes back for a line out
01:21:47where he kicked it
01:21:53Dominguez oh an intercept by Kellett and this is the nail in the coffin Manasama securing the victory
01:22:01Darren Kellett pulling it out of the sky and racing away
01:22:0735 to 18
01:22:19opportunist try here by Kellett he saw that coming about five seconds before he got the
01:22:23ball and raced away we saw a lovely crowd shot there Keith East London's in the middle of the
01:22:28Trans Sky or near the Trans Sky it's the home out of the Xhosa people in South Africa and
01:22:32they're perhaps the the major tribe that's interested in playing rugby you saw probably
01:22:3650 or 60 little Xhosa children they're absolutely delighted that Manasama seems to be
01:22:40walking away with this game indeed they are 37 to 18
01:22:48the kickoff is taken quickly Poutu Leobassard leaping
01:22:52for the ball two captains wrestling with each other off to the side
01:22:58Nu'ualetia away to Kellett just playing it safe Kotita
01:23:08and that's the whistle for a late charge Kotita is down
01:23:13now another intercept
01:23:17to Obaenga George Harder and two late intercepts have delighted the crowd
01:23:28and it means Manasama are going to race away with a very big winning advantage
01:23:34and it means Manasama are going to race away with a very big winning advantage
01:23:41yeah well these are really unforced errors on the part of Italy I think they're obviously
01:23:45going to come when you're under pressure you have to spin the ball and play an expansive game
01:23:48you see we see a lovely crowd sort of game but when you have to spin the ball and play an
01:23:52expansive game you leave yourself open to opportunistic tries that Manasama have done
01:23:56here we saw it in the first half where Italy got one when Manasama was unexpectedly running in
01:24:00their 25 but this is a good win for Manasama Italy will have to take stock of their options
01:24:05they had a lot of unforced errors today they didn't really do as well in the lineouts as expected
01:24:09although surprisingly their scrum which was 40k's lighter than the Manasama scrum
01:24:13certainly dominated in the tight phase well these people will be here I'm sure next week
01:24:20to see the Manasama game against Argentina they've proved a popular team here today
01:24:24for the Corsa people here in East London yeah that's that's the uh the homeland of Nelson
01:24:29Mandela the ex-homeland of Nelson Mandela and certainly apparently they are very keen rugby
01:24:33players on Robben Island it's something they used to do once a week there's Kellett he already has
01:24:3817 points it's just hit the post and deflected away but a pretty good effort by Manasama four
01:24:45tries for the wingers 42 to 18 that try was unconverted the game is over
