00:00A joint maritime set of drills dubbed Sama-Sama between the navies of the Philippines and
00:06the US along with the participating countries kicked off in Zambales.
00:11This fortnight of naval maneuvers and activities is designed to reinforce interoperability
00:16among the allied nations.
00:18Our Patrick De Jesus took his team to Subic on kickoff day of Sama-Sama.
00:26Compared to previous years, the Sama-Sama 2024 exercise between the Philippine and US
00:33navies along with other participating countries will be larger and more expansive, focusing
00:40on maritime security and capability.
00:43The exercise officially begun with an opening ceremony at the Naval Operating Base in Subic-Zambales
00:51earlier today.
00:52Other countries participating are Japan, Canada, France, and Australia.
00:59The United Kingdom will participate as an observer.
01:03Participating naval ships will also conduct a joint group sail.
01:07The group sail will be conducted in the northern part of Luzon, also utilizing various aerial
01:14assets.
01:15The exercise will not exceed the boundaries of the 12-nautical-mile territorial sea.
01:21For the Philippines, we're going to use our frigates.
01:29We have other patrol vessels to participate in this exercise and then, of course, we have
01:38the smaller ones.
01:39There are a lot of skills that we want to develop.
01:43The two-week training is focused on strengthening interoperability among the allied navies and
01:50it is not targeting any specific country amid geopolitical tensions in the region.
01:56The focus here is on interoperability and on building partner capacity and interoperability
02:03for security in the region.
02:05The intent of this exercise is not to ruffle feathers.
02:10It's tailored for interoperability.
02:12This is really about honing our skills.
02:15This has been going for decades already.
02:18So this is not new and it's not intended for any other purpose.
02:23The activities will first take place under the harbor phase of the Sama-Sama exercise,
02:30followed by the sea phase, which includes the group sail and other naval drills.
02:36There will also be a deployment from the U.S. Marine Rotational Force Southeast Asia for
02:42the Sama-Sama exercise and the Kamandag exercises set to begin next week.
02:49Currently, the U.S. Marines are assisting with relief operations in Batanes, which was
02:55devastated by Super Typhoon Hulian using their KC-130J aircraft.
03:02Relief supplies have been transported in coordination with personnel and air assets from the Philippine
03:08Air Force.
03:10What we've done is we've moved about 90,000 pounds to Loag Airport, which is up in northern
03:17Luzon.
03:18It will be staged there and then loaded onto MV-22 Osprey helicopters, tilt-rotor platforms,
03:25from the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit.
03:28They're coming off of the USS Boxer.
03:30The USS Boxer is en route.
03:32From Subic, Zambales, Patrick de Azuz, from The National TV, for a new and better Philippines.
