00:08It's Mix 94.7. Sean Mack broadcasting live from the Live Graystar ATX.com Lounge at ACL Music Fest.
00:14Day 3. Orville Peck is here. How are you?
00:17Hello. I'm very well, thank you. How are you?
00:19Good. This is not your first time to Zilker Park. You played this festival, what, 2019?
00:242019. Yeah, 2019.
00:27Does it feel like a lifetime ago?
00:29It kind of does. A lot's happened since then, actually.
00:32In the world and with you, I'm sure, as well.
00:34Yes, the world, my life, like, everything. And so it does feel like a lifetime ago.
00:38But honestly, I'm so excited to be back. It's my favorite festival to play.
00:41Awesome. How are you doing with the dust? It's a little dusty.
00:44I'm okay. I mean, listen, nothing. I did Coachella and Stagecoach in the same year.
00:48And by the time Stagecoach rolls around, you're basically in the Serengeti.
00:52So, like, I'm okay. This is nothing.
00:55Good, good. I saw yesterday on your socials you were here bouncing around, checking out some music.
01:00Some friends of yours, including Teddy Swims, of course. How was that?
01:03How was getting around and seeing some people?
01:05Oh, it was great. I mean, the nicest thing about ACL is the lineup is just so beautifully curated.
01:10It's always so good. So, yeah, I got to see, you know, my friend Teddy.
01:14I got to see Benson Boone. I'm really excited for today to see Chapel Rowan, to see Sturgill Simpson.
01:22Yeah, I'm super excited.
01:24Awesome. New album, of course, Stampede. Congratulations on that.
01:28I love this album. It's so much fun. It's a little bit of something for everybody.
01:31Exactly.
01:32Of course, being in Austin, we have to start with the most important duet of all, Mr. Willie Nelson.
01:36How does this come about? How do you get involved with our favorite Austinite?
01:41He asked me, which is insane, you know.
01:44He summoned me onto his tour bus at a festival and asked me the first day I ever met him.
01:51Wow.
01:52It was pretty, pretty insane.
01:54And now, you know, I've gotten to work with him, gotten to know him, gotten to know his amazing family.
02:01I just I can't say enough about him and his family.
02:03They're the best.
02:04Fairly smoky bus, I'm assuming.
02:06You know, I don't think he smokes anymore. I think it's edibles.
02:08Yes, that's right. I believe he's shifted in later years.
02:11Like I say, his old age.
02:12We had a cup of coffee, so I've never gotten high with him.
02:15But I mean, I will say the weekend is yuck.
02:20Stampede, of course, a duet album.
02:22If you guys are not familiar, when you start out an album like this, is it like do you just start calling artists you're fond of and be like, hey, favor to ask, what do you guys think about this?
02:31Yes.
02:32Which is the crazy part.
02:34I pretty much everybody except for, I think, three artists.
02:38So there were 18 in total was just me reaching out to them because I had either known them or worked with them in some capacity before.
02:46So it was really easy.
02:47That was the easy part.
02:49The hard part was like scheduling everybody's crazy, you know, working on everyone's crazy schedules.
02:54And that was a nightmare.
02:56But the easy part was asking people.
02:58And I learned quickly it started snowballing because people just kept saying yes.
03:03And I was like, oh, damn.
03:04I mean, you must be doing something right.
03:07Oops, I did it.
03:10Another icon, of course, Mr. Elton John.
03:12I should say, Sir Elton John.
03:14That's right.
03:15How surreal is this duet doing one of his songs, of course, as well?
03:18Yeah, that's also crazy.
03:19I mean, you know, Elton, I met Elton because I did a cover of another one of his songs years ago for a Spotify thing.
03:28And he just called me out of the blue.
03:30He found my number and just started and we had like an hour long conversation.
03:33And I was like, you know, I like levitated.
03:35And you're like, is this my life?
03:37Yeah.
03:38And ever since then, you know, he'll email me sometimes, which is really cute.
03:42Like, see how I'm doing or, you know, he's invited me to like amazing events that he throws for, you know, the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
03:48And like, I mean, he's really, really just an amazing person and obviously someone I've looked up to my whole life.
03:54So that that was a thrill for sure.
03:56Is he an emailer or a texter?
03:58Emailer.
03:59It's sort of like we're pen pals.
04:01Check your inbox every once in a while for Sir Elton checking in.
04:06You mentioned Chaperone earlier.
04:07Of course, she is going to be on later this evening.
04:09And on your TikTok, you did a cover of Pink Pony Club.
04:12I did.
04:13Yeah.
04:14So now the question is, do you want to pitch to Chaperone, her being your next collaboration, your next duet?
04:18Who's to say I haven't?
04:20Is this a scoop?
04:22We want to talk about that?
04:24It's been a long time since I've found an album that I listen to on repeat as much as I have with her.
04:31There's something so great about it.
04:34And I love that she is so unabashedly herself.
04:39It's just so refreshing.
04:41And yeah, she's great.
04:43Let's make that happen.
04:44Maybe we put that out as a 2025 into the universe.
04:47Let it float around and let it levitate as well.
04:50A hundred percent.
04:51We'll see.
04:52Orville Peck, thank you so much for being here.
04:53Thank you for having me.
04:54We appreciate you.
04:55We love having you back in Austin.
04:56Obviously, come back anytime.
04:57And everyone, go listen to Stampede because it is an awesome album.
05:00Thanks so much.
