02:37You need help
02:40Okay, no, I mean
02:44You know like from professional
02:48Because I
02:50Still think you can be treated
02:54You know what because I you know, I have to hope you can get better
03:01I
03:12Just been trying to think how this all happened because I didn't raise you to be like this
03:20Yeah, so why do you think you
03:27Why'd you do it
03:32I don't know. Okay. Well see now that's not gonna cut it
03:40I'm sorry. Well, yeah, I
03:44Don't need you to say so I
03:50Need to know why
03:53Because there needs to be some responsibility here
03:56What you've done to the family to grandma
03:59To Sherry and me
04:02Hmm I mean, do you
04:08Do you have any idea how this all started
04:19Thinking about it a lot, you know
04:29As I used to
04:34Well
04:37Remember when you used to take me to go and find roadkill and I'd cut him up. Oh, no, no
04:46You're gonna lay this on me
04:51It's not my fault I didn't do this and I was a good dad to Hugh
04:57I
05:05Like what I was doing was I was showing concern for my son who finally showed an interest in okay dad
05:10You know, I mean what you did. I didn't teach you how to do that
05:14You hear me? Okay. I
05:20Didn't do this
05:26I
05:56I
06:13Said Richards. Yes
06:19I'm Joyce Flint. I
06:21I
06:25Have the results of your HIV test
06:36You're negative
06:51I
06:53I
07:18Are you crying
07:23I'm just so happy. You don't have to give your mother any bad news
07:42Sweetheart
07:45Lionel what are you doing? I'm just I'm up early. You never came to bed
07:53I'm sorry. What did you say?
07:56Honey
07:58You need to talk
08:04Honey you have to sleep. This isn't healthy. Well, my schedule is all messed up
08:10Well, you should be using this time just to rest
08:14I
08:16Can't rest. Sorry, then we need to see a doctor and get you some sleeping pills
08:20Because five nights in a row of not sleeping is not healthy. Yeah, that'll do it. Yeah. Yeah more pills
08:26That's just what this family needs. You know, you do know that pills are what started this whole thing
08:31You know that just calm how many pills do you think she was on when she was pregnant with him thousands?
08:36She was sleeping pills sedatives seizure medication. She didn't give him a fucking chance
08:41When you can't blame Joyce for this the fuck I can't
08:47Because it's her fault
08:51She wasn't a mother
08:54She never even held him stop she's scaring the shit out of him
09:00And then she just left
09:02She got in her car and she drove away and she left that kid in that house all summer
09:08Where were you that summer Lionel?
09:11Oh
09:12God, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that. Oh, hey, we are in this together
09:23But you didn't know
09:29He's got my genes Sherry half of that boy is me and I
09:34I've had thoughts like him. I think I used to I
09:44Used to
09:45try to make explosives and
09:49I would use fireworks and I would tie a little army guy to them and one day I brought a homemade bomb
09:56to school
09:59And I threw it out the goddamn window for Chrissy, oh, that's not the same thing. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
10:08No, listen. I
10:14Had fantasies like him too, I think
10:18There was a neighborhood girl and she lived on our block and I tried to hypnotize her because I
10:27I don't know
10:31To get her to do whatever I wanted
10:38And I used to sit in church
10:46And think what it would be like to kill someone to murder them
10:51And I had nightmares about it for a while I did
10:56and
10:58But it wasn't about how I
11:01Kill someone because it was about how I'd already done it
11:08Knowing that I'd kill someone and not knowing what to do
11:13But you didn't
11:16There is nothing wrong with your genes honey, I mean just look at David
11:21He's got half your DNA and he's a nice normal kid wouldn't you say
11:28Yeah
11:34Yeah, yeah
11:51Oh
12:03Sir you're not allowed to be here. You can't go in there, sir
12:12He's probably asleep upstairs, it's so early leave her alone sir, you cannot be in here. She's my mother get him out of here
12:19You're scaring her. You have no right to business. It's a crime scene sir. Your son killed people in this house. Mr
12:24Dahmer you understand that you have no right to be he's cooperating with us. You know that right?
12:27She has dementia you come in here. You start going through her stuff. She's gonna have a nervous breakdown
12:33Please just let me put her in a room. We'll be out of your way, please please come on
12:43There's that Queen
12:45Oh
12:51Yeah, okay
13:05What's your move
13:10Today the city of Milwaukee is hurting
13:16Jeffrey Dahmer's heinous crimes have not only shocked the nation. They've inflicted a
13:24painful and devastating wound on this community
13:30Now some folks have asked me
13:33Reverend
13:34Why are you going out to Milwaukee?
13:38Dahmer's been caught. Aren't you just stirring up more division?
13:42Those folks I say I come here today not to sow division, but to call for accountability
13:53Dahmer's crimes were committed in a vacuum
13:56Many people including officers of the law
14:00Turned a blind eye which is why he was able to do what he did for so long
14:08But you're lucky
14:10But you're lucky you've got a strong leader in police chief areola
14:16The chief told me he's planning to launch a thorough investigation into what went wrong
14:22especially that
14:24incident involving that young boy
14:27Connerick sent us a phone
14:30But let me be clear
14:32We are not content
14:34to simply listen to words
14:38Comforting words
14:40words like healing
14:44Cooling down
14:47Coming together
14:49Those are all cold words that mean exactly the same thing
14:55Let's sweep this under the rug
15:00We will not be satisfied we will not rest
15:04until the conditions
15:07Exist that would allow someone like Jeffrey Dahmer to murder
15:1217 young men many of them black and brown we will not rest until justice prevails for all
15:19Citizens in this city. We will not rest until empty words a replacement decisive action. We will not rest
15:37This isn't fair chief you can't suspend us we did nothing wrong nothing wrong
15:42You returned an underage boy back to a serial killer that would eventually kill him
15:46He didn't check his identification or his age you ignored witnesses. You didn't do a background check on Dahmer
15:52We didn't see a need to do a background check
15:54Well, if you had you would have seen the Dahmer was still on probation for child molestation
15:58Look, the kid looked like an adult. All right, we thought it was a boyfriend-boyfriend thing
16:02So I guess that's why you had to get deloused after the incident
16:05That is what she told dispatch, isn't it we have it on tape that was a joke then there's Glenda Cleveland Dahmer's neighbor
16:11She claims that she called multiple times about him, but you ignored her request whose side are you on?
16:16She this isn't about sides your boy screwed up and I'm under a lot of pressure
16:20I have the mayor the community Jesse Jackson the whole damn country's breathing down my neck. I have to do something
16:26You're our police chief. You're supposed to have our backs
16:28You'll both be on paid leave until the panel finishes its investigation after which we'll make a final determination
16:39You know what our union reps are gonna fight this
16:44You can't fire us. Trust me
16:47We will be here long after you
16:50Did you think that Jeffrey Dahmer was going to eat you yeah, I did
17:01Seriously my heart
17:04Harrowing stuff
17:06His name is Tracy Edwards the man who was almost Jeffrey Dahmer's final victim
17:12Thank You Tracy for telling us all about it
17:14The man who was almost Jeffrey Dahmer's final victim
17:18Thank You Tracy for telling your story
17:20our next guest is a childhood friend of Jeffrey Dahmer's who agreed to come on the show on condition of anonymity and
17:27He's got a story. That's a Heraldo exclusive. We'll call him Nick
17:32Thank you for coming on the show
17:35Thank you for having me. I
17:37Understand you had a sexual relationship with Jeffrey Dahmer. How did you meet him?
17:44We were on the yearbook staff. Jeffrey was on the yearbook staff.
17:48Where did this sexual activity take place?
17:52at his house
17:54Did you meet his family? Oh, yeah
17:59Stepmother was like a stepmother from hell
18:02Screaming at him all the time
18:04It's just just all lies. Jeffrey Dahmer's second wife Sherry
18:10He said to me
18:12He told me that he was
18:16Sexually molested by his father
18:19I'm not watching this
18:23Jeffrey Dahmer
18:24Well, that's not true. No, it's not true. None of its true. Well, sweetheart. What can you do? I don't know. I
18:32Don't know. I gotta do something
18:38What
18:43You know, they cover a Newsweek and people magazine
18:53Wow
18:56Okay
18:59You think I could take these with me just to read no you can't
19:12What do they say well, what do they say it's not good Jeff
19:17They're saying you're the Milwaukee cannibal
19:20People want to kill you. They want you dead
19:24Well, fine, I want that too no, no, no, you know, Wisconsin doesn't have a death penalty
19:32Well, they're talking about bringing it back though because of me right no no Jeff just get that out of your head no
19:40Look
19:42It doesn't help anybody for you to spend the rest of your life in prison
19:46Okay, you need help and there's really only one way we can do that. That's right. Yeah
19:53For you to get the help you need so we can understand all this. We have to convince the judge that you're insane. Yeah
20:01I'm not insane. Well at the time of the killings then
20:05No, I wasn't any
20:09And he killed people you cut him up he had sex with him
20:14He had to stop dismembering so you could masturbate on it. It wasn't crazy. It was just like a
20:20Compulsion right? Okay. So you had a compulsion which means you couldn't stop. Yeah, Jeff. Come on
20:28Come on, you talked about demon
20:30You said that you were possessed
20:32That you'd wake up and you'd remember what you did cuz I was blackout drunk dad
20:37That's why I didn't remember some stuff
20:41But I knew what I was doing
20:44didn't want to but
20:47Couldn't help myself
20:51I'm not insane. No Jeff. No, no
20:56I'm not insane. No Jeff. No, no
21:02You're not gonna say that in court just you you're not because
21:08We got something now, okay, we got a legal precedent
21:13There's a previous case. That's
21:16He's very similar to yours and it wasn't too far from here
21:19What what this guy did? It's is very similar. It was a while ago
21:25Back when I was a kid, this was in Plainfield
21:28November 16th
21:311957
21:34The owner of a hardware store she disappears now, no one knows where she is
21:39Her son tells the police that a man by the name of Ed Gein had been there the evening before
21:49So they go to his house
21:51Nobody's there. So they walk around the back and find his shed
22:05Jesus Christ
22:08And there's the woman's body all cut up hanging from the rafters
22:13So they arrest him
22:15He doesn't say a thing
22:18He doesn't say a thing
22:2230 hours straight. He just sits there
22:27Finally he pipes up
22:30I'd like an apple pie
22:33And a slice of cheese
22:35Then he starts talking
22:37They search the house
22:40They find the woman's head in a burlap sack and there's just body parts
22:48Bowls made out of people's skulls
22:52He had skulls on his bedposts
22:55He upholstered his chairs with human skin and
23:01Just like you Jeff, you know you said you
23:05Tried to dig up a body once
23:08Yeah, just once. Yeah. Well, it turns out this guy
23:11He did it like 30 40 times digging up bodies
23:15Wow, they looked in the coffins they were empty and
23:19and and he went to a kind of a daze when he did these things and then he would kind of wake up and
23:25And he couldn't remember what happened
23:29Do you have sex with the bodies you dug up? Okay. Okay Jeff Jeff here Ed Gein
23:35the point is he killed a lot of people too, okay, and there's no denying that but
23:42He entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and he didn't spend the rest of his life in prison
23:47He spent the rest of his life in a hospital getting the psychiatric help that he needed
23:53You see we can do the same thing for you Jeff
24:03What that does sound familiar
24:06What?
24:09I've read about him
24:14You know as a comic book I read about him I think
24:18Sorry, did you say a comic book?
24:22Yeah, I was one of those weird tales ones or something spooky stuff I
24:31Remember the cover I think a
24:34a
24:35Fucking comic book. I mean well now we know where the fault lies the whole culture
24:39Yeah, who writes a comic book like that? Yeah, I mean, that's mr. Dahmer
24:43You've got to understand the the weight of what it's like representing somebody like Jeff
24:49I've got to stay focused here and we hold fast and stick with the insanity plea
24:54So we do that. We still have to go through the whole trial
24:56Yeah, and I think we lean into it. We don't argue the murders aren't gruesome. They are
25:03I think that helps our case
25:05The jury has hereby determined that mr. Dahmer was of sound mind and not legally insane
25:13with respect
25:15To all of the 15 counts of first-degree murder
25:19He's confessed to which means his victims families can rest assured that he will be sent to prison
25:26Court shall recess till Monday at which time victims family members will be allowed to make impact statements to the court and
25:35The defendant will be allowed to make a statement of his own before sentencing court is adjourned till Monday at 9 a.m
25:56I
26:11So that's it, huh, you're leaving, huh
26:14What do you want me to say Lionel, well, I would like you to take some responsibility maybe Lionel
26:20Responsibility, what does that mean? It's just what it means. So you're saying this is my fault
26:25No, no, he's not. Yeah. Well as of now, I'm taking the blame for this. Have you read what they've said about me?
26:31I mean, I've not heard a word from you about the awful lies. They're spreading about me
26:35I don't know what the hell he's talking about. I don't know what he's talking about
26:38I don't know what he's talking about. I don't know what he's talking about
26:42They're spreading about me, I don't know what the hell you did with them when I wasn't there
26:46Oh, is that right? And you say I did this to him?
26:50It is not my fault. You son of a bitch. It's nobody's fault. You think it's not
27:00Yeah, yeah, just walk away Joyce just just like you walked away from your son Lionel you still on those pills, huh?
27:06How many you fucking take it?
27:08Lionel stop it
27:11Thanks. All right. Sorry. Sorry. I'm sorry
27:41May I help you? Miss Strutter? Yes. I'm Joyce Flint. I know who you are
27:48Is your daughter Dorothy here? Curtis's mother? She's not. What is it you want, Miss Flint?
27:52Well first, let me just say how deeply I feel for you
27:57I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do
28:00I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do
28:03I don't know what to do. I don't know what to do
28:06I don't know what to do
28:08How deeply deeply sorry I am for what happened
28:15For what my son
28:18Did to your grandson Curtis
28:22I realize there's nothing I can say
28:28It's unforgivable
28:30Why are you here, Miss Flint?
28:38I came here because I was hoping to speak to you or your daughter
28:47As a mother
28:50To ask if
28:54If either of you might be willing to say something in court tomorrow
29:01On behalf of Jeff
29:03On behalf of Jeff?
29:06That the judge might consider sending him to a mental facility and not to prison
29:14You want us to forgive your son?
29:18Ask the judge to forgive him?
29:20No
29:26I feel for you, ma'am
29:28Truly, I do
29:30You want your truth as a mother to be heard
29:33I understand that
29:35But maybe now is the time for you to listen to somebody else's truth
29:39You understand?
29:43Let's hear the first impact statement
29:54My family and I came to this country by boat
30:03We were poor, but we were hopeful
30:15We believed in the American Dream
30:26But now we're living in a nightmare
30:34And it's all because of Jeffrey Dahmer
30:44He robbed us of our son, Conrad
30:51He robbed us of our dream
30:55My name is Shirley Hughes, and I'm Tony Hughes's mother
31:01I would like to say to Jeffrey Dahmer that
31:05He don't know the pain, the hurt, the loss
31:10And the mental state he's put our family in
31:14But I'd just like to read a poem that
31:17A good friend of my son's wrote
31:21Why are you attacking me, Jeffrey?
31:24I thought you were my friend
31:26Why am I a victim in your cruel and evil world?
31:30Look at the tears roll down my face
31:33See that each one is a cry for help
31:35And realize that I want to live
31:38What have I done to you to make you such a maniac?
31:42To make you such a devil?
31:44Why did this happen to a person like me?
31:47Why did this happen to a person like Eddie?
31:52He gave so much and asked for so little
31:57All he wanted was a chance to be himself
32:01When you killed my brother, you killed
32:06My mother and father
32:10I beg you, your honor, don't let this man ever
32:14Walk the streets or see daylight again
32:19Good morning, honor. My name is Donald Bradoft
32:25I'm for the Bradoft family
32:31As much as love in our family closed
32:35My mother gave five beautiful kids
32:40We lost
32:43He destroyed the baby of the family
32:47And I hope you go to hell
32:51I love this world
32:54You guys did a wonderful job
32:57Bottom of my heart, thank to God
33:00I got a lot of strength
33:04Thank you all
33:07God bless America
33:10I'll never get a chance again
33:13To tell him that I loved him
33:16You took my mother's oldest grandchild from her
33:20And for that, I can never forgive you
33:24Mom, I'm gone
33:27I know there's a dragon piercing your heart
33:30Day and night because of this
33:33But yet I'm not far away
33:36Two fingers and one thumb
33:39Means I love you in sign language
33:43When you cry, mom
33:46Place one teardrop outside your window ledge
33:49And when I pass by, I'll exchange it for one of mine
33:53And then I'll always be with you
33:56Two fingers and one thumb
33:59Two fingers and one thumb
34:02Your son, Tony
34:19My name is Rita Isabel
34:22And I'm the oldest sister of Errol Lindsay
34:25Jer... whatever your name is, Satan
34:28Dad, this is how you act when you are out of control
34:32Now, I don't want to ever have to see my mother go through this again
34:36Never, Jeffrey
34:38Jeffrey, I hate you, motherfucker
34:41I hate you
34:43This is out of control
34:45Don't fuck with me, Jeffrey, I'll kill you, goddammit
34:48Look at me, look at me, motherfucker
34:51Mr. Dahmer, before I impose sentence
34:55I understand you have a statement you'd like to read
34:58Yes, your honor
35:26Your honor, it is over now
35:30This has never been a case of trying to get free
35:34I didn't ever want freedom
35:37Frankly, I wanted death for myself
35:40This was a case to tell the world
35:43That I did what I did not for reasons of hate
35:47I hated no one
35:49I knew I was sick or evil or both
35:53Now I believe I was sick
35:56The doctors have told me about my sickness
35:59And now I have some peace
36:01I know how much harm I have caused
36:04And I tried to do the best I could after the arrest to make amends
36:09But no matter what I did
36:11I could not undo the terrible harm I have caused
36:14My attempt to help identify the remains
36:17Was the best that I could do
36:20And that was hardly anything
36:22I feel so bad for what I did to those poor families
36:26And I understand their rightful hate
36:29I know I will be in prison forever
36:42We're here outside Milwaukee County Courthouse
36:45Where just moments ago, Judge Lawrence Graham
36:48Sentenced serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer
36:50To 15 consecutive life terms in prison
36:53One life term for each person he's accused of killing
36:56You all right, Mama?
37:00Yeah, I'm good
37:03We got that bastard
37:05We got him
37:07And he ain't never getting out
37:21Guess I'm getting less coming to me, huh?
37:31It's okay, Dad
37:33We tried our best
37:35Listen, um, I think we only have a few minutes
37:38So there's something that I gotta tell you
37:41Um, now, I've been looking everywhere
37:45To find out who's responsible for all this
37:48Blaming everybody
37:50Except myself
37:52And it's me
37:54I'm the one to blame
37:56Honey, you don't have to say that
37:58Okay, shut up, Jeff
37:59Please, just listen to me
38:00Listen to me
38:01It's me
38:02I did this to you
38:03All that stuff with the dead animals
38:05I shouldn't have done that
38:06I shouldn't have showed you how to do that
38:08And your, uh, your fantasies
38:11About killing people and stuff
38:13I should have made you feel like you could
38:16I should have made you feel like you could
38:19Tell me about that stuff
38:21You know?
38:25Because I had those same feelings
38:31And I gave you that book of me
38:40And, uh, I never really
38:44Gave you enough when you needed it
38:46When you went to prison, I wrote a letter to the judge
38:48I said, my son needs help
38:50Because I knew you did
38:51But I just left it at that
38:52And that wasn't enough
38:54And, uh
38:57I wasn't a good father
39:01I wasn't because I wasn't a good husband
39:04And you didn't feel safe
39:09I left you alone
39:11I can't believe that I left you alone
39:14I'm so sorry, I left you alone
39:17Time to go
39:18I'll never forgive myself
39:22Okay, but I won't leave you again
39:26I promise, son
39:27I'll make it up to you
39:30I'll visit you every week and I'll call
39:34I've known this was coming for a long time now
39:38There's so much I need to say
39:42But I find it impossible to put into words
39:46Because it's all so horrible
39:50Words can't express what I'm feeling
39:54And I don't know what to say
39:58Because it's all so horrible
40:02Words can't express the scale of my grief
40:09When I try to take responsibility
40:11For the part I played in all of this
40:14It is simply too painful to do so
40:19But denying I had any part in it
40:23Is a comfort I can't allow myself
40:27Because I know it isn't true
40:31I failed you, Jeff
40:34And I'm sorry I wasn't the mother you needed
40:39And I am no longer willing to live with the guilt of that fact
40:44To all of Jeff's victims
40:47I cannot express to you the magnitude of my regret
40:52So it's pointless to even try
40:56To my son David, please forgive me
41:00You've been able to rise above all of this
41:04And I'm sorry that I'm not able to
41:08I love you and your brother
41:12I tried my best
41:17Sweetheart
41:19Hold on, hold on
41:20I'm in the middle of a chapter
41:22When, uh, Jeff was
41:24Do you remember that Christmas before Jeff went in the army?
41:27Okay, but I
41:28Just, uh, one second
41:33Oh, you know, how did I not know that writing a book
41:36Is what I should have been doing the whole time?
41:40I don't know
41:42Is what I should have been doing the whole time
41:46I think I have a knack for it
41:48Lionel, I just got off the phone with David
41:51She's okay
41:53But he said that Joyce tried to kill herself
41:57Oh, Jesus
42:00Oh, Jesus
42:06She's okay, though?
42:08Yeah
42:10Okay
42:13I'll call him
42:30Thank you, guys
42:33We're glad to be back on the force
42:36Thank you for all your support
42:39It's meant a lot
42:41And, uh, it was nice to know that somebody has your back
42:53I appreciate the call, man
42:57Yeah, so do I
43:03What happened?
43:05Those two cops who
43:08Let that Connerick boy go back to Jeffrey Domo
43:12They've just been reinstated
43:14What?
43:16A slap on the wrist and that's it?
43:18Mayor said they're gonna appeal the decision
43:20And if that fails?
43:23Then we
43:26Fight the next fight
43:29And the next fight
43:32And the next
44:02And the next fight
