00:02Good morning.
00:03It's a very special day today because it is the sixth month birthday of the iPhone
00:0914 series.
00:10And I've had this guy, the 14 Pro Max, in my pocket since it launched as my daily driver,
00:15my everyday phone.
00:16Although, I wouldn't be a proper tech YouTuber creator person if I didn't carry around
00:21at least one or two Android phones as well.
00:24It's kind of striking just how many good alternatives there are to the iPhone these
00:29days.
00:30With not quite the A16 beating but still very powerful Snapdragon 8Gen 2 chips, we
00:34have 1-inch camera sensors, up to 200 megapixel resolutions, periscope zooms, bigger batteries,
00:40faster charging, and even some fun flipping folding form factors.
00:44Try saying that five times quickly.
00:45But despite all this and the amazing alternatives, why do I keep coming back to this?
00:51Because Apple pays me.
00:52That might not actually be true.
00:53In fact, as far as I know, Apple never pays for content.
00:56So people who write in the comments, like, you've been paid for by Apple, never.
01:00Well, at least I haven't, sadly.
01:02Also, say hello to Sylvie.
01:03The truth is, though, I really don't have any brand loyalty.
01:06My only loyalty is, well, to my cat, I suppose my wife as well, and I'm in the very privileged
01:11position to have access to all these amazing flagship phones.
01:14And compared to the Android competition, the iPhone is starting to feel just a little bit
01:18boring.
01:19iOS 16 continues to have a few too many niggling bugs.
01:23The lightning port is a pain in the arse.
01:25It's one more cable for me to carry, and it's slow for transferring larger files.
01:28And really, it's the main reason I don't bother shooting ProRes, because it's so bloody hard
01:32to get off the phone.
01:33And I still don't know why I can't pause video recordings.
01:36Android phones can do it.
01:37It also still seems weird to me that on this Pro Max phone, you still can't multitask or
01:41have split screen modes.
01:43And to be honest, as someone who actually used the 13 Pro Max as their everyday phone
01:46before this, and my one could probably do with a screen replacement after it slipped
01:50out of my pocket, always use protection, boys and girls.
01:53The 14 Pro Max really isn't that much different.
01:56And subjectively, I know some people prefer the look of the 13's camera.
02:00So the iPhone is not perfect.
02:02And actually, I do enjoy using my S23 Ultra more.
02:05It's more fun.
02:06There's more modes, features, camera options.
02:07And if you're in the Galaxy ecosystem, with their buds and tabs and books and all the
02:12nice multi-control and quick share software features, Samsung really is giving Apple and
02:17their ecosystem some proper competition.
02:20Have you heard of Grammarly?
02:22I knew the name, but I'd never actually used it myself before, although when they actually
02:25reached out and asked if they could sponsor a video, I figured I should probably give
02:29it a go.
02:30Although, when I actually told my wife I was working with Grammarly, she was really excited.
02:33She's been using this for years, and she was like, it's the best thing ever, and she's
02:37not wrong.
02:38So I signed up, I followed the handy little intro tour that shows you how it all works,
02:42and then you can simply create or upload a document on their website and let it do its
02:46thing on your copy that way, although most of the time I use it when I'm in Word or Google
02:50Doc or an email.
02:51It's so easy to use, just tap this little Grammarly icon at the bottom right to pop
02:55up its suggestions for correctness, for clarity, engagement, and best of all, delivery.
03:00It can suggest different tones, which I think is brilliant.
03:03I mean as an English person, pretty much every email contains a sorry or hope that's okay,
03:08so I love the tone suggestions you get with Grammarly Premium, especially when it gives
03:11me suggestions to be more confident.
03:13And all it's really doing is helping me communicate more effectively and also make fewer mistakes.
03:18I mean even if you don't have a writing job per se, one word can change the entire tone
03:22of an email.
03:23And Grammarly suggestions have been an enormous help.
03:26I actually originally wrote big help and they were like, no Tom, you can do better, expand
03:29your vocabulary.
03:30It's an enormous help, which it is.
03:32Over 30 million people use Grammarly and it's a completely free online writing assistant.
03:37You've got your browser extensions, your desktop editors, mobile apps, or you could just use
03:41their website.
03:42And the best bit is Grammarly is completely free, so why not give it a try, and if you
03:46fancy upgrading to Grammarly Premium with all the features, then click my link in the
03:49description below to get 20% off.

03:55However, despite saying all of that, it is still the iPhone 14 Pro Max that I carry with
03:59me every day in my pocket.
04:01And there's five, maybe six main reasons why, and the first one is actually because of this,
04:07the MacBook.
04:08For the longest time, I would edit and work and game on my desktop Windows PC, which I
04:13do still sometimes, or a Dell XPS laptop, until the M1 MacBook came out.
04:19That was a game changer.
04:20And since then, I've done pretty much everything, including all my work and all my edits on
04:24a MacBook Pro.
04:25I'm currently using the 16 inch with an M2 Max.
04:28But using them together, we start to see some of that Apple magic.
04:32I use AirDrop every single day for transferring photos and video clips.
04:36I can copy some text or URL on my laptop and then instantly paste it on my iPhone.
04:41I can accept and take calls on my Mac, and I can even use the iPhone as a super duper
04:45high quality webcam.
04:47And that's just the start.
04:48If you add an Apple Watch into the mix, you can use it as a remote viewfinder for your
04:52iPhone's camera.
04:53Then you've got your AirPods and your iPads, plus all their software like iMessage and
04:57FaceTime and iCloud, AirDrop, Apple Tags, and their own apps as well like Apple TV,
05:01Music, Fitness, and their arcade games.
05:04Some of these things may not be a big deal for you.
05:06Like for me, the whole thing around wanting an iPhone for the green text bubbles with
05:10iMessage just isn't a big deal.
05:12I rarely use iMessage.
05:13It's all about WhatsApp and maybe a bit of Telegram for me.
05:16But either way, for me, and I think for most people, it is that lovely warm ecosystem that
05:21keeps us coming back to the iPhone.
05:23Regardless, if in many ways on paper, the Android rivals are better phones.
05:29Okay, number two.
05:31Video.
05:31This.
05:32I'm actually shooting it on the iPhone in cinematic mode, 4K 30, right now.
05:36Also using the inbuilt mic, so let me know how that sounds.
05:39I think for cinematic mode, nothing beats this.
05:41And to be honest, while other phones come very close, I don't think there's a better
05:46overall camera system for video than the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
05:50The stabilization, the seamless transition between the lenses, ProRes, I can shoot 4K
05:5560 with the selfie camera.
05:56And while it does lack some features, like there's no 8K 30, which you can do on this,
06:00and also the long range video quality is also much better on the S23.
06:04For me, I still think iPhone is king when it comes to video.
06:07And since video is such a big part of my life, it does keep making me come back to
06:10the iPhone.
06:11For example, I shot almost all of my B-roll for this Tesla video recently on the iPhone.
06:16But while this isn't as versatile as, say, the S20 Ultra, and I love a one-inch sensor
06:21like the latest Xiaomi's and Vivo's, the iPhone's camera is still fantastic.
06:25The dynamic range, the fast focusing, the really stable 4K 60 footage.
06:29So many creators now just use the iPhone, which I think is fantastic when I've got a
06:34three or four thousand pound camera on my desk, but I leave it there and I pick up my
06:37iPhone.
06:39Number three, apps.
06:40This is not the night and day difference we see on tablets between the iPad and the Android
06:44rivals like the Galaxy Tab.
06:46Nonetheless, the advantage of the iPhone with its App Store compared to the fragmented Android
06:50competition with the Google Play Store is developers genuinely prioritize the iPhone.
06:55It's usually the first to get app updates or new features.
06:58And in my experience, things like sharing IG stories shot on the iPhone tend to be higher
07:03quality than if I share it on an Android, although this can be kind of hard to quantify
07:06and it does vary between Android phones.
07:09But genuinely, for the best and most optimized app experience, the iPhone is still the better
07:14option.
07:15Although I do miss the customization and the ability to sideload and all the flexibility
07:19you get with Android.
07:21Number four, battery life.
07:23And I am actually working on a big 2023 flagship battery comparison video.
07:27I'm just waiting for a few more stragglers who launch later than expected.
07:30So make sure you have subscribed and stay tuned to see how this does fare against the
07:33new kids on the block.
07:34But the 14 Pro Max is still one of the best phones for battery life.
07:38And I'm usually left with about 35% by 11pm at night when I toddle off to bed, getting
07:43around eight hours of screen on time.
07:44And to be honest, it's the main reason I use this over the regular iPhone 14 Pro.
07:49I definitely prefer the smaller size of the 14 Pro, but the battery advantage of the Pro
07:53Max is just more important for me.
07:55And after six months using it every day and charging every night, apparently I still have
07:59100% battery health.
08:01I do wish we had faster charging, but I like MagSafe.
08:04I really like this MagSafe Duo charger pad thingy.
08:07I just bring that everywhere for my phone, my AirPods and my Apple Watch.
08:10Plus I carry a backup MagSafe battery pack as well.
08:13But yes, I am aware how very expensive all this is.
08:17Okay, number five.
08:18And let's talk about actually using the phone over the last six months.
08:21And obviously some of the big reasons I stick with the iPhone are for the camera, the battery,
08:26the ecosystem, the ease of transferring photos and videos between my phone and my Mac,
08:31the fact that I use AirPods.
08:32It's an iPhone.
08:33It's consistent.
08:34It's reliable.
08:35It looks great.
08:35And I love the rounded corners, which makes it much more comfortable to hold than say
08:39the S20 Ultra with its squared off edges.
08:41The alert slider is handy for quickly switching between silence and loud modes.
08:45The speakers are great.
08:46The screen gets incredibly bright.
08:47And I know not everyone loves it, but I really like the dynamic island,
08:51having little audio waveforms or updates for your Uber.
08:54It turns out you very rarely actually interact with it and press it.
08:57But as a little notification menu, it is handy.
09:00Obviously, it is quite a chunky cutout.
09:02So you do notice it when you full screen videos or if you play games.
09:05But the flip side of that is we do have best in class face unlocking.
09:08So yeah, it's an iPhone.
09:10It's nothing particularly exciting, nothing particularly new, except the dynamic island,
09:14which is why you could say it's also a little bit boring.
09:16I would love a folding or flipping iPhone, something just a little bit different.
09:20And then number six, there's, well, the six years of support.
09:24Even Samsung only offer four years of Android updates plus an extra year of security.
09:28You've got a pretty good trading program.
09:30And a lot of my friends who use iPhone,
09:32they do go to Apple retail stores and get their geniuses to transfer files or fix problems.
09:37But I'm not here to convince you to buy an iPhone.
09:40You should buy whatever phone works best for you and what fits in your budget.
09:43I'm just kind of explaining why I have been sticking with an iPhone
09:46despite all the fantastic competition.
09:49The thing is, you really can't go wrong with any new flagship phone.
09:52But for my work use, my everyday workflow, this just makes sense.
09:58But what about you?
09:58What phone are you using right now?
10:00And are you tempted to get the latest iPhones?
10:02Or do you think they have got a little bit boring?
10:04Let me know what you make of the iPhone in the comments below.
10:06Thank you so much for watching, guys.
10:07I'll see you next time right here on The Tech Jam.
10:19you
