00:00Hey guys I'm Tom the Tech Jap and I remember when I got my first ultra-wide
00:04monitor I was kind of blown away by how much extra space you get that sort of
00:09immersive wraparound gaming experience or when I'm editing in the timeline on
00:13Premiere Pro all this extra space. So this 38-inch ultra-wide is already
00:18pretty huge but I want to take things to the next level.
00:23Inside this giant box is a 49-inch super wide monitor. It's the Philips
00:34Brilliance 499 P9 49-inch 32 by 9 super wide monitor. Is it gonna fit? Let's see
00:45what happens. Small hiccup. We're trying to build this huge thing actually putting
00:54it on this massive stand. The screw placement is misaligned. You can see
00:57there it's not lined up which means they will not tighten up. I'm just gonna
01:05have to be very careful with this. Leave it sort of hooked in but not screwed in.
01:09I will report this back to Philips and fingers crossed this is just an issue
01:13with my particular one here and not a wider spread issue. So if a normal 16 by
01:189 monitor gives you about that much space on here an ultra-wide goes to
01:22about here that adds about 30% extra screen space. Well just look at the size
01:27of this 32 by 9 super ultra-wide and with a resolution of 5120 by 1440 and
01:34this 49-inch screen size you're essentially getting two 27-inch
01:38quad HD monitors side-by-side and of course unlike a traditional dual monitor
01:44setup there's no big fat bezel in the middle that you have to you know put
01:49extra cables in and it looks ugly. This is just one beautiful seamless
01:52experience and those among you who are thinking wait a minute Tom quick maths
01:57two 27-inch monitors doesn't equate to 49 inches that should be 52 well
02:02remember the screen is measured diagonally and because of this 32 by 9
02:06aspect it's a little bit shallower than a 16 by 9 so that's why it's different
02:11you are still essentially getting two 27-inch quad HD monitors side-by-side.
02:15So you could fill up the entire screen with one big Premiere Pro tab like this or
02:19maybe you could put it side-by-side with another one like that or even open up a
02:24whole bunch of other ones and have maybe five or six tabs side-by-side and just
02:30really take advantage of all that extra space. So obviously the sheer scale of
02:35this thing is the headline feature but this monitor does have another trick up
02:38its sleeve in the form of a recessed secret webcam you just press in at the
02:43top pull it down. It's a 2.1 megapixel camera it can shoot full HD video which
02:49is why I'm recording this at right now and while the placement is ideal it's on
02:53top of the monitor it's looking straight into my eyes that's great the quality is
02:57a bit ropey if I'm honest it's noisy even with this good light around me but
03:01at least you have the option and if you are worried about security you can
03:04always just push it back into the monitor when you're not using it.
03:10To my eye the Philips is a smart looking monitor it's got a clean overall look that
03:13actually looks a bit futuristic and with slim bezels a brushed metal effect
03:17fascia and a seriously meaty stand that clearly means business it's a nice
03:21overall look. So it's clearly a multitasking beast I didn't think I'd be
03:25actually switching from my 38 inch LG ultrawide which has been my go-to
03:29monitor for over a year but after using this for a few days I actually think I
03:34might. Mostly it's because I appreciate the productivity potential with that
03:38extra screen space and also that more immersive gaming experience. I like the
03:42fairly gentle curve of the screen which wraps around you just a little bit so
03:45you don't feel too far away from the corners of the screen. It has pretty good
03:49response times, it's color accurate and while the brightness was fairly average
03:52it can be increased when using the HDR 400 mode. It's great to see HDR
03:57featured here but it is only the entry spec type. Now this isn't obviously a
04:01monitor primarily aimed at gamers given the steep price and with a refresh rate
04:06that tops out at 70 Hertz. That said you get such a wide view in games you really
04:10feel involved and wrapped up in the action. The Philips also benefits from
04:14adaptive sync over DisplayPort which is a variable refresh rate technology that's
04:18similar to AMD's FreeSync and is supported on both recent Nvidia and AMD
04:22graphics cards. This means smoother motion and less latency in games so
04:26actually it works pretty well for gaming. Having said all that I did experience
04:29some pretty bad screen tearing in Battlefield 5 however I got a very
04:33smooth experience with Apex Legends, Metro Exodus and some others so it
04:37doesn't seem to be a big problem. So a lot of games do now work well with
04:40ultrawides but it's going to take a little bit longer for super ultrawide
04:43support to catch up. Menus and cutscenes are often displayed at 16 by 9 meaning
04:48that you get even bigger black bars either side of the screen. It's got a
04:52great range of ports which are all located along the back plus you can plug
04:55in your laptop to the Philips using a USB 3.1 type-c cable if your laptop
04:59supports it. It can also act as a docking station where you can plug in a
05:02keyboard, a mouse, ethernet cable and external storage which is great news if
05:06your laptop is limited on ports and the built-in KVM switch means you can
05:10actually use two computers plugged into the monitor at the same time with one
05:14set of peripherals. Okay the downsides. Well the on-screen display is controlled
05:21using buttons and I much prefer monitors that use a joystick. I find that much
05:24easier to use. Also bear in mind that the ports don't continue to supply power
05:28if the screen is off or in sleep mode so it won't continue to charge a connected
05:32laptop. But it's not being able to mount it securely to the stand that's my
05:36biggest problem. But what about competition? I've previously tested the
05:41Samsung CJ89 43 and 49 inch monitors. Effectively you're getting two full HD
05:47monitors side-by-side but it does have a faster 120 Hertz refresh rate and are
05:51considerably cheaper. Dell have a direct rival to this Philips in the form of the
05:56U4919DW plus LG will soon be entering the ring with the 49WL95C which also
06:03has a similar spec. And if it's a gaming focused super ultrawide you're after
06:06then Samsung's CHG90, Asus's XG49VQ, ROG Strix and the new Acer EI491CR are
06:14your best options. So overall then I'm a big fan of the Philips 32 by 9 super
06:19ultrawide. It is huge and not everyone's gonna have a desk big enough but if
06:23you're using lots of programs or tabs side-by-side then that extra screen space
06:27does come in handy. It is a bit disappointing the stand didn't fit
06:30properly but overall I am still very impressed with this. Thank you so much
06:34for watching guys let me know what you make of this super ultrawide in the
