00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third, James White, Field, Yates, Mina Kimes.
00:16All right, so first play we're going to look at, second and two, one of the Patriots' first
00:19offensive plays.
00:27What's going on, everyone?
00:28Mike Cadillac, Taylor Kailas here for CLNS Media, back with another episode of the Patriots
00:33Daily Podcast, powered by PrizePix and GameTime.
00:37We'll talk about them a little bit later, but today, Taylor, we have another film room
00:41episode of the podcast, and at this point, it's the quote heard around the world from
00:46Gerard Mayo, calling his team soft, calling them out.
00:50Bill Belichick's pissed about it.
00:51We'll get into all of it.
00:53Mayo said yesterday, as we know, we are a soft football team across the board.
00:56He has since walked that comment back a little bit, said that we're not a soft football team,
01:02but we're playing soft, and the point stands, really, and he said that you talk about what
01:06makes a tough football team, it's being able to run the football, it's being able to stop
01:09the run, and it's being able to cover kicks.
01:12He said they did none of those on Sunday, and ironically, that's the same moniker as
01:17a Bill Belichick coached football team.
01:18Taylor shared some insight into a Matt Patricia, was it a meeting room or something, Taylor?
01:24It was a clinic, like a coaching clinic.
01:26Okay, yeah, it was a Patricia clinic, and he had a slide up on the board that said what
01:31makes tough football teams, and it's running the ball, stopping the run, and kickoff coverage,
01:35and as Mayo said, they did none of those on Sunday, so it made our jobs, I don't want
01:40to say easier, but it gave us a nice storyline to pair into the film room show to show you
01:45guys why the Patriots are playing soft football, so we broke down a little bit of the running
01:49game and how the Patriots aren't running the ball efficiently.
01:51We broke down the same thing of them stopping the run or not stopping the run, and we have
01:56a little nugget at the back end as well of Bryce Behringer's punt that turned into a
02:00punt return tuck down, so we're going to jump right into it, hit on all three, and we're
02:04going to start with the Patriots' lack of a running game on Sunday, and they come into
02:08this one, Taylor, seven offensive lines in seven consecutive weeks, and they also come
02:13into this one without Ramondrey Stephenson fully healthy.
02:16He hadn't practiced in, I think, just about two weeks prior to that last Friday practice
02:21in London before they ended up making them available for the game.
02:23They didn't elevate any running backs behind him, Hastie and Gibson.
02:27They really just went with those three, and they gave, you know, Ramondrey the lion's
02:30share of the carries, and it didn't go well.
02:32They ran for just 38 yards on 15 attempts, two and a half yards of carry.
02:37Drake May and Stephenson were tied for the lead with 18 yards apiece.
02:41It didn't go well, and it's really, it's been the last two weeks without a healthy Stephenson
02:44where this thing has just kind of gone down the drain.
02:46They went from, you know, averaging just over five yards of carry through the first
02:51five weeks to 2.9 yards per carry the last two weeks.
02:56They also are, they have the fewest yards before contact per rush.
03:00They have the second lowest conversion percentage in the league.
03:02These are all courtesy of PFF.
03:05They have four explosive runs in the last two weeks that is tied fifth fewest in the
03:09NFL, and their run stuff percentage is 30.3, and they're the only team, Taylor, you pointed
03:15this out, averaging negative yards before contact.
03:18So not good.
03:19Since week five.
03:20Yeah.
03:21Since week five.
03:22I'm sorry.
03:23It's past two weeks.
03:24The last two weeks, which again, it's no, it's fine.
03:25But that's kind of the point of this thing is it's really, they were running the ball
03:28efficiently over the first five weeks.
03:30A couple of games weren't great in total yards and it wasn't the reason they won or lost
03:35really.
03:36Couldn't have been the reason they won.
03:37They only won one of the games, but it's only been, it was efficient and now it's just kind
03:40of gone down the drain.
03:41So let's pull up the film and kind of explain why there's a little bit more nuggets in
03:46there, but draw Mayo said it himself.
03:47It's something you got to watch on film.
03:48But it's also a mentality and an attitude.
03:50Yeah.
03:51And Gerard Mayo said, well, we said last hour you weren't there.
03:55I know, but I said last night in that last week, it wasn't really that they were just
04:01getting killed in the ground game.
04:02And in most of the games, it's really been a bigger problem of you're giving up like
04:06four or five explosive runs a game, sometimes six.
04:11Like it's one thing.
04:12I think they're one of the better teams in the league when it comes to consistency.
04:15Like teams don't really run on them successfully throughout the game, but because these games
04:20are either blowouts against the Patriots or they're close games where no one is really
04:25so far apart that one side of the, uh, one part of the game is taken away.
04:30Then you get to the point where, okay, they can still run the ball and the more chances
04:34you get, the more likely the defense is to give up some big runs against the Texans.
04:38It really was only like four or five plays where you're really like, if we get those
04:42back and they've said this, we get those back.
04:44It's a different story in the game.
04:46Like those big runs really put them in a bad spot.
04:49It set up a lot of other things because CJ Stroud didn't really have a great game.
04:52Wait, Taylor, Taylor flip it.
04:55We're talking about the Patriots running the ball.
04:57Oh my gosh.
04:58I'm sorry.
04:59It's okay.
05:00It's okay.
05:01Talk so much.
05:02Drake may actually talking about the run game.
05:04My brain gets scrambled.
05:05I'm sorry.
05:06No, you're fine.
05:08You should have called me off earlier.
05:11I was, I was funny.
05:12I was, I was putting our rundown together and all of a sudden I heard this other stuff.
05:15I was like, wait, that's not what we're talking about.
05:17That's my battle.
05:18We're talking about the run offense.
05:19That wasn't very good either.
05:20So with the run offense, the bigger issue was like against Miami.
05:24They killed it.
05:25Right.
05:26They didn't run a ton, but they ran very efficiently.
05:27Then last week we started to see, all right, there's issues, but, and even last we are
05:32last night, I tried to give them the benefit of the doubt.
05:34Let me watch the film before I say the run game was down because I want to know, like
05:38if it's just city, so having trouble, that's one thing, you know, DeMontre Jacobs is the
05:43problem.
05:44Sure.
05:45The run game is down, but I'm not going to have them.
05:46My stock down necessarily because you don't really expect those guys to be the ones putting
05:50the, you know, run offense on their back this week though, the big target.
05:55And as you can see in the compilation, again, I can't believe I didn't, but it was Michael
05:59Jordan really for the most part.
06:01And we're a soft podcast, Taylor.
06:03We're a soft podcast.
06:04We can't get a soft podcast are screwed at this podcast.
06:09But the big issue was Michael Jordan and he didn't have a great week last week.
06:13I think for the most part, he really has exceeded expectation for the Patriots, especially in
06:17past protection, but in the run game, he really did struggle.
06:21Now his 26.6 PFF run, black and gray is what he's had since week six.
06:26That is the lowest in the NFL among players with at least 50 offensive snaps, barely not
06:32very good.
06:33And then Demontre Jacobs, he's the eighth lowest among tackles with a hundred offensive
06:37snaps with a 50.8 run blocking grade.
06:39So hasn't really been great for the Patriots.
06:43Really mostly reserves.
06:44Although Michael Jordan's pretty much been a starter, but the reasons that they really
06:47had issues were one, they tried a lot of outside zone and it wasn't anything super sneaky.
06:52Like they went with their 11 personnel groupings.
06:55They ran to the open side of the side that didn't have a tight end, but it wasn't even
06:59the predictability really.
07:00It was the execution because there were times where Michael Jordan struggled to either get
07:04out in front of his blocker.
07:06Now sometimes maybe you could have had a better assist from Ben Brown.
07:09There was one rep from Ben Brown where he did get pushed back, kind of threw things
07:12off because as some of the coaches on Twitter have been awesome and reminding me if you
07:17can't as a running back run on track with your center on all outside zone, it really
07:22makes life difficult because that's really your North star pretty much.
07:26So again, Michael Jordan on the outside zone concepts, wasn't really able to get in front
07:30of his blockers or get to the second level.
07:32And then on some of the gap concepts where like from shotgun, they tried to run counter,
07:36they tried to run power, some gap things with Michael Jordan pulling.
07:40He really doesn't get a ton of push when he actually makes impact.
07:43So what happens is he gets knocked back and the guys that are trying to run behind him
07:47end up running into a wall and then things kind of collapse around them.
07:51Also city.
07:52So I don't want to dog on the guy because this is the second time we've seen in the
07:56season and it's really been in more of like a niche role last week.
08:00So he wasn't really great either.
08:01Like there was a time where it was a pin pull run.
08:03You can see it on the compilation where he tries to get outside and set the edge.
08:07He doesn't get any movement and then the running back kind of runs into him.
08:10And again, the thing, everything kind of collapses around them.
08:13But Ben Brown, for the most part, especially downhill, I thought he was solid.
08:17I thought at times Mike and when he went city, so I don't really have a ton of their duo
08:21runs.
08:22There was only a couple that really stood out negatively.
08:23They didn't get as much push as I was hoping to see, which was definitely disappointing
08:27where, you know, they would get the double down, but then you would see that somebody
08:31would still slip through as somebody climbed to the second level.
08:33And this is the second week in a row, the Patriots have struggled to get to the second
08:37level and block linebackers were especially in some of these more aggressive schemes.
08:42When you have these athletic linebackers, I want to fly downhill with the bigger, you
08:46know, Mike and one who types, you know, laden Robinson types, it can be harder for them
08:50to peel off and get to those guys.
08:52Actually Robinson does a pretty solid job.
08:54I don't want to throw him under the bus, but Michael Jordan, like I said, did have an issue
08:58with that.
08:59So the biggest issue that I've seen in the past two weeks has been Michael Jordan.
09:02So you have to wonder like this team is trying to find a consistent offensive line.
09:07Maybe they stick with Michael Jordan because he hasn't really been a liability in past
09:10protection for the most part, but in the run game, this is the second week in a row where
09:14a lot of the negativity or negatives come from him, not really able to do his job on
09:18a consistent basis.
09:19So I'm curious if they're going to switch things up because honestly, if laden Robinson
09:24is healthy and obviously we don't know if he is for sure because he suffered, I was
09:27an ankle injury, right?
09:28That was what it was.
09:29Yeah.
09:30I ended up being an ankle.
09:31Yeah.
09:32Him and Kaden Wallace, man.
09:33Just terrible luck.
09:34But I do like, especially because laden was pretty solid early on.
09:37There was one time where he tried to pancake a guy and he actually wound up kind of throwing
09:41him almost into Drake May, who was on one of Drake May's first scrambles.
09:45Still a work in progress.
09:46He's a rookie, but I like the right side a lot.
09:48I do think that laden and Nwenu are a good duo.
09:51On the left side though, still very much a work in progress because at least for Darian
09:56Lowe and Michael Jordan are okay when they're together because they have that chemistry
10:00and especially on outside zone when they've been together and the team runs left, they're
10:04usually pretty solid.
10:05Although Lowe's gotten a couple of holding penalties, but yeah, for the most part, I
10:09think it's really Michael Jordan, Ben Brown.
10:12Maybe don't get pushed back quite as often on outside zone runs.
10:15I still don't think that's a glaring issue for them.
10:17And then if city, so isn't the lineup next week, I'd like to see more consistency from
10:20him.
10:22Let me ask you this then, because I mean, we mentioned a ton of Michael Jordan and we
10:25have the numbers here.
10:26It is 26.6 PFF run blocking grade is the lowest in the NFL since week six.
10:31So obviously not great there.
10:32You mentioned some of Nwenu there, and then obviously Laden Robinson and Ben Brown could
10:37get better.
10:38But the other thing that you didn't really touch on that I, you know, I had mentioned
10:40it before, but I don't know how much it really mattered is Romandre Stevenson.
10:44Like this, this dip over the last two weeks where, you know, their, their yards per carry
10:50goes down.
10:51So this dip over the last two weeks and Romandre didn't play last week against Houston and
10:54he played this week, but clearly I would think wasn't a hundred percent after just one practice.
10:58So did you notice anything from Stevenson that, you know, it's blocked up, but he's
11:03not getting to the next level or he's not able to find his gap because he's just slower
11:07off the punch or kind of still nursing back from something, or do you think it's strictly
11:10the offensive line?
11:12I mean, I definitely didn't think he was as explosive.
11:15Okay.
11:16Like there were times where I was like, yeah, it looks like he doesn't have quite that same
11:20forcefulness as he usually does, but you can see it in the compilation.
11:23There's a lot of times where he's getting hit behind the line of scrimmage and remandering
11:26Antonio Gibson, I've done a pretty good job for the most part, still making positive yardage
11:30out of that.
11:31But it reminds me of last year where we were saying, and Romandre admitted that he did
11:34get off to a slow start, but I'm looking at these plays and I'm like, he's getting hit
11:38at the line of scrimmage or behind it on a pretty regular basis.
11:41And then when he got better, it was because city so entered the lineup and then you had
11:45more consistency at guard.
11:47Every time they ran right, pretty much they had some level of success, or at least more
11:50consistently than they did on other plays or before city.
11:53So into the lineup.
11:54So definitely don't think that remandering was a hundred percent and we can put some
11:57of that, but at the same time, you're seeing it play after play after play, they're not
12:01really getting big avenues to run through.
12:04And it's one thing, obviously you have remandering, you have Antonio who can make a lot of their
12:07own yards, but you don't want them to have to live in that world.
12:10And that's one thing I have down here with the yards before Kerry, you mentioned they
12:13have the fewest yards before Kerry, the only team that has negative yards that really tells
12:17a story for me where, yes, of course, like Stevenson's not playing his best, but the
12:21offensive line has to give these guys some more help.
12:24A hundred percent.
12:25Yeah.
12:26You meant only team averaging negative yards before contact over the last two weeks.
12:28That is clearly not good enough.
12:29And even if, even if we're healthy, remandering Stevenson has three defenders in his face,
12:34it's not going to be good enough.
12:35And he's not going to be able to make explosive runs or really even reach that second level
12:38through the line if he has defenders in his face.
12:42So that's the run game, Taylor.
12:44We're going to move on to the Patriots stopping the run or the fact that they're not stopping
12:48the run.
12:49But before we do a quick word from our friends over at prize picks, because prize picks right

14:09Help us out.
14:10You get $50 instantly when you play your first $5 lineup.
14:14All right, Taylor, let's get into.
14:17And I just realized as we were sort of doing our, our podcast and our rundown that the
14:21reason that you were messed up was because our rundown had the run defense and the run
14:25offense flip.
14:26So it's not, Taylor's not completely in space.
14:29It's Mike's fault.
14:30It's, it's, it's Mike's fault.
14:31I wrote a sneak preview.
14:34We have an article coming out on CLNSmedia.com, a dual article with all of the film, all of
14:38the quotes, everything kind of put into one and I wrote it that way.
14:43And so that's what I was reading.
14:44Taylor's reading opposite.
14:45Honest mistake.
14:46We're a soft podcast, podcast, but we're, we're playing soft, Taylor.
14:51We're not, we're not soft.
14:53We're playing soft and we're going to improve it there.
14:54So let's go.
14:55I just read the bot just now and I said why they struggled versus the Texans.
15:00I think my brain broke.
15:01I think I'm dying.
15:02My brain is dying because of this goddamn team.
15:06We're one in six, just like the Patriots.
15:09Let's get into the Patriots, not stopping the run.
15:12And this is the fascinating part to me, Taylor, because there there's really a, there's a
15:18little bit of drama here because they had their issues stopping the run, obviously tank
15:22Bigsby and company rushed for 171 yards and two touchdowns on their 39 carries.
15:28And right now they're tied for a season where it was, excuse me, it was their season worse
15:33with six explosive runs against the Jaguars.
15:35They've now allowed 22 such runs since week three, that's tied for second in the NFL and
15:41big old bill Belichick weighed in on the Patriots stopping the run and how Gerard Mayo called
15:47that defense soft.
15:49And he said, defensively, the Patriots led the league last year in rushing defense yards
15:54per carry.
15:55Number one, not true.
15:56Cause that last Jets game, he's actually wrong.
15:58I don't think they did.
15:59I think I know, but he goes on to say, this is what the Pat Magbie show, if you haven't
16:03already heard it yards per carry number one in the league.
16:05And this year they're way down in the twenties and it's the same guys that re-signed Jennings,
16:09that re-signed divide, that re-signed Duggar, Marcus Jones, and Gonzalez have been healthy.
16:14You got wise, you got Godshaw.
16:16He's really dropping names here, Taylor Lee got Keon white and Mapu.
16:19It's all the same players.
16:21Belichick goes on to say, I'm hurt for those guys to call them soft.
16:24They're not soft.
16:25They were the best team in the league last year against the run.
16:28I feel bad for the defensive players on that one because that's a tough group.
16:33It was like the former man in charge, putting it on the coaching while drawed Mayo, putting
16:37it on the execution, because he says they have to play better.
16:40It's technique.
16:41It's not the X's and O's.
16:43We have to be where we're supposed to be.
16:45So Taylor, what went wrong in the past or in the run defense on Sunday against Jacksonville
16:51before I even get into that, first of all, I don't think Bill has watched the Patriots
16:56this year because half the players he named aren't playing very well this year relative
17:00to what their standard is.
17:01And while I understand a lot of that student coaching, like the fact that he's kind of
17:05ignoring the fact that bar more is not playing and Bentley's not, that was the big one bar
17:10more not being in the middle and peppers as well.
17:12Like, come on, man.
17:13It's like judan.
17:14Sure.
17:15That's a wash.
17:16I understand.
17:17But like Christian Gonzalez, isn't having a huge impact in your run defense.
17:20Christian Gonzalez is playing well.
17:22Marcus Jones is playing well, you know, for the most part, because the run or the pass
17:27coverage is playing pretty well, especially in the actual secondary.
17:30The run defense, though, like Geronimo kind of hit on it, but it almost feels like whack-a-mole
17:35sometimes because other weeks it's been, you know, Rayquan McMillan and Keon White.
17:40And we talked about that this week.
17:43The guy who's been your best run defender, Devon Dacha, who led the NFL in three weeks,
17:47seven with 18 run stops, was one of your worst players on defense, unfortunately.
17:52And, you know, I'll pull it up, but it was I think it was really disappointing.
17:56The performance that we got from this run defense, especially from some of the guys
17:59that you really do rely on.
18:00Now, it was a mixed bag.
18:02I'll say that like Devon Dacha, you know, 37 PFF run blocking grade in week seven.
18:07That was his lowest in a game since week six of 2021 against the Cowboys.
18:12His first year with the Patriots averaged up the tackle in that game against the Jaguars
18:174.7 yards, the third furthest in a game for him since joining New England.
18:21So for perspective, 4.5 yards.
18:24That means the running back has gotten more yards than you want to average per carry.
18:29Most of the time that he ended up tackling and that just wasn't acceptable.
18:33Now, on one end, he was getting double consistently.
18:36You can see that here.
18:37There's not a whole lot of times where Dacha is losing one on one, but still he needs to
18:42be better in those situations.
18:44He's a nose tackle.
18:45His entire job is to take on those double teams.
18:48And I understand they've been moving in more to defensive end the way you're going to see
18:50in some of these clips with some of the more depth guys like Jaqueline Roy and Eric Johnson
18:55with them at the nose.
18:56Right.
18:57And one of the things he said was no tackle should be able to block me one on one.
19:01Really the Jaguars did a much better job in those situations of getting multiple bodies
19:04on him.
19:05But there's also a rep for like, gotcha.
19:06I got blocked by a tight end and I was like, okay, whoa.
19:10This isn't like against the dolphins where it was that one drive where he really kind
19:13of got rocked because they were on the field for so long and they were tired and everyone
19:17kind of acknowledged attrition said him.
19:19That's one thing.
19:20But schematically, what really bothered me was the fact that they were getting gashed
19:24by the same run, mostly in the second quarter, but really throughout the game.
19:28And the biggest issue that they had were these inside zone runs from the shotgun where they
19:33would have an RPO with Evan Ingram.
19:35There was an option to throw the bubble to him.
19:36I think they only did it like one time.
19:38The bubble option basically took Christian Ellis out of the play almost every single
19:42time because he had to respect that he took one or two steps outside and then he couldn't
19:47get to the play.
19:48The majority of those reps that typically left Jelani to buy as the middle linebacker
19:52at the point of attack.
19:54Now, one, the fact that it was the inside zone run and tank Bigsby and who is the other
19:59back?
20:00Uh, he used to be on a deer.
20:02They did a really good job kind of forcing him to respect a run to the opposite gap and
20:06then shooting to his side.
20:08And that slowed him down.
20:09But the fact that they kept seeing this run and you're seeing consistently Devon Godshaw
20:14getting blown out of his gap by double teams, Dietrich wise, really not even competitive
20:18was really upsetting to me.
20:20And they try different things like you're, you see it in the compilation.
20:24The first time it happened, they were in nickel, they were in a three, three alignment with
20:27five guys on the line of scrimmage and one linebacker against RPOs.
20:30You really don't want one guy off the ball because it makes it harder for you to split
20:34between the run and the pass on those RPOs.
20:37What they did was they tried more looks where they still had essentially five man fronts,
20:42but then two backers off the line of scrimmage where they would have Jelani to buy play side
20:46and then Christian Ellis to the backside.
20:49Sometimes they would have five defensive linemen on the line of scrimmage where it's like Keon
20:53white and Anthony Jennings on the edge.
20:55Sometimes it was a tight front where instead of an outside linebacker on both edges on
20:59one of those edges to the bubble screen side, they had Kyle Duggar.
21:03So he can still respect the threat of the bubble while you have the integrity of having
21:07two inside linebackers to defend the run.
21:09It still didn't work.
21:10They still got gashed by it.
21:12Now there were also runs where like inside zone from under center where you would see
21:16again Jelani to buy kind of take a step one direction thinking the run was going to hit
21:20there and then he's like getting to the point of attack and it was a mixed bag again.
21:26I want to give guys credit who did play well because Daniel equality tied a single game
21:30career high with four run tackles against the Jaguars.
21:33Only other time he did that was 2020 when he was actually on the Jaguars funny enough
21:37and also his PFF run blocking grade of 70.4 was his second highest for a game in his career
21:42for a game where he had 10 runs and snaps against the run and Anthony Jennings.
21:48The dude brings his hard hat every single week.
21:50I genuinely can't remember the last time I saw an amputee Jennings game and was like
21:54he was bad.
21:55Like really he's almost always good.
21:57Sometimes they'll just get the edge on him but really he's very Belichick Belichick knows
22:01Jennings is good too.
22:02That was the first guy he mentioned today when talking about the players that are still
22:05there.
22:06I mean Belichick knows ball.
22:07He may be a little salty and he's you know kind of shitting on Mayo more than he needs
22:10to but he knows ball Anthony Jennings career high six run tackles in week seven.
22:14He also had four run stops which led the Patriots and was the second most he had for
22:19a game in his career.
22:20The most was five in week 17 in 2023 against the Bills.
22:25So that's again the frustrating thing is it's not a complete wash like you do have guys
22:30who are doing their jobs to Quail and Roy and Christian Ellis for the most part weren't
22:34bad considering those are guys being asked to step into bigger roles because other guys
22:38either can't fill in sufficiently or they're injured to Quail and Roy did get moved by
22:42double teams.
22:43But at the same time you're seeing him sometimes take on those doubles and get off his blocks
22:47late.
22:48He's pretty consistently winning against one on one blocks Christian Ellis was more competitive
22:52against linebackers at the second level than what we saw from Rayquan McMillan which is
22:56why we mentioned I want to see more Christian Ellis at the second level because Rayquan
23:00McMillan is not beginning it done.
23:02Most of the explosive runs have come with him at the point of attack.
23:05Even Keon White and Dietrich wise we were saying that we'd like to see less of them
23:08because they're not getting a ton of pass rush from those guys even and you're giving
23:13up runs.
23:14So at some point you got to say like what do we care more about this game.
23:17You'll see it on some of these plays that are not this one.
23:19But they did actually use Daniel equality instead of Dietrich wise and Keon White to
23:24make sure they were a little beefier and sturdier up front and it still didn't work.
23:28So in terms of options down the road at the end of the day guys need to play better.
23:32You cannot have Devon God job being your worst run defender.
23:35That's completely unacceptable.
23:37I think the guys like to Quail and Roy can be more consistent.
23:40You know Eric Johnson had some rough reps then later in the game he seemed like he was
23:44kind of figuring it out.
23:45But at the end of the day run defense is about team football.
23:48They don't have Christian Barmore and Juwan Bentley and Jabril Peppers to make up for
23:52guys around them kind of failing.
23:54So each of these guys needs to do their job.
23:56They cannot be getting blown off the line scrimmage.
24:00Unfortunately that's we saw a lot from God job from Dietrich wise and then Jelani divide
24:03not really being as much of a force at the point of attack as you'd like.
24:06So it's kind of annoying talking about how run defense can be better when it's not really
24:10schematic thing.
24:11It really is just like no guys are getting blown off the ball.
24:14That's it.
24:15Play better.
24:16I'm sorry.
24:17That's in terms of substitutions.
24:18I don't really know what else you can do.
24:20The guys you had out there are the guys that we've been talking about as players who maybe
24:24are going to get more snaps.
24:25So it's got to be an execution thing unless you plan on bringing in you know different
24:29players from either be a trade who are young and can be a long term addition for you or
24:34maybe there's someone in for agency they like.
24:35I'm sure that anybody for agency isn't going to be able to fill the void the way they want
24:39to.
24:40So you know bottom line got to play better.
24:42So reading not so much reading between the lines but taking your take on it.
24:47You agree with Mayo that it isn't the X's and O's and that they're putting them schematically
24:54in the right positions.
24:55It is on the players to as Bill Belichick would say do their job and they're not doing
25:00it right now.
25:01So you're blending both sides of the regime this one and I think I agree I haven't dove
25:04into it as much as you have but I mean the fact that this defense has played well in
25:09the past they've played well in this type of scheme last year and at the beginning of
25:14this year they you know they they held up early and they've just gotten gassed the last
25:17couple of weeks.
25:18It really feels like what the players are saying is true where we need all guys on the
25:22same page doing our job and not playing for you know themselves and playing for the team
25:26and they just haven't done it right now and that's kind of where they're at and there
25:30was a I didn't even show because it wasn't the run defense one of the most glaring examples
25:35of guys you know I don't like you're kind of freelancing like Dietrich wise I would
25:40even call it freelancing but Warren scramble in the third quarter where he completely loses
25:45track of the quarterback and instead of like extending and trying to look outside of his
25:50blockers frame he disengages and drips up field and then Trevor Lawrence runs and you
25:56see Daniel McCauley after the play just like what are we doing here.
26:00And that's why I asked Mayo and I mentioned this in another video but when your leaders
26:04your captains your guys who have just been re-signed and extended are the ones making
26:08these mistakes is that more discouraging what do you do and he kind of gave a pretty boilerplate
26:13answer which I'm sure he still believes that you know it's upsetting regardless of who
26:17it is and those guys need to play better but that's where it's like is it coaching.
26:22I don't know.
26:23It's got to be coaching because how do you fix that.
26:25Like I understand partially what Bill Belichick is saying with the run defense and that it's
26:28the same guys pretty much.
26:30You know there are some of these people who are still on the field.
26:32So what's what is different.
26:33I'd like to know as well why you know Jelani to buy is necessarily playing as well despite
26:38mostly being in the same kind of role and obviously the supporting cast isn't there
26:42around them like we mentioned but you know it's just it's discouraging when you see these
26:46guys you thought you could rely on coming into the season being some of the main people
26:50who are the reason you struggle like it's not just to Quail and Roy.
26:54It's not just you know even Joshua who's been seeing less knocks on run downs or rake
26:59to be in there because one Bentley's hurt and it's not like Christian Ellis is the one
27:03blowing these runs.
27:04It's got shot.
27:05It's wise.
27:06It's Jelani to buy.
27:07Like these are your your staples on defense.
27:09So you know I wish I had the answer you know I really do other than play better.
27:13But I mean from what I'm seeing it's just poor execution in the end.
27:16I feel like I'm going to go to D in the chat.
27:21We appreciate we appreciate the tip and also D says Drake may need to start keeping the
27:25ball on zone reads.
27:27Well we're not touching on Drake May today.
27:29We're going to do a Drake May film review tomorrow at noon live on press pass.

28:56What time is it Taylor game time it's game time and it's also time to wrap up this podcast
29:02with the last section of what Gerard Mayo talked about and what Bill Belichick talks
29:07about what making tough football teams is all about.
29:11It's running the ball defending the run and it's kick coverage and I talked about how
29:14Mayo and Belichick did not agree on what made the Patriots poor play happen on the
29:21run defense but they do agree on the kick coverage Gerard Mayo mentioned on WEI today
29:26that while Bryce Barringer has been a weapon the entire year quote one thing I would say
29:30is if you punt the ball right down the middle of the field it puts a lot of stress on everyone
29:34else and that's what happened Bill Belichick said the same thing today on the Pat McAfee
29:39show there's what he said he said I don't understand why punters just want to punt the
29:42ball straight down the middle of the field against good returners okay it comes back
29:4797 yards but it's hard when you lay it right down the middle like right down the middle
29:51of the field you've got to cover all 53 and a third yards you out kick the coverage he
29:55went on to say I get it Barringer might lead the league in average he's got an 80 yarder
30:00a 77 something yarder but they're so hard to cover and look if you're gonna go right
30:04down the middle put some hang time on the ball he screamed this Haley goes put some
30:08hang time on the ball like get it up there those four second 69 yarders are hard to cover
30:14as you can see here excuse me the coverage lanes not great they got out leverage the
30:20entire time but Taylor what's your take on what happened on this kick return which again
30:25the Patriots were up 10 nothing they let up a quick 14 then they punt the ball and then
30:30they obviously let up this touchdown for a 22 point second quarter for Jacksonville yeah
30:35we've had two Patriots head coaches tell us that the reasons they thought it happened
30:40so there's not a whole lot more for me to dive into all of it honestly and I'm not really
30:44special teams coach there's only so much I can glean kind of just based on what I know
30:47about football fundamentals so my biggest observations for this were one you see that
30:52Marcellus Dial and Joe Cardona end up basically in the exact same space and then by the time
30:57they actually get downfield they end up getting split and that turns into the seam that Parker
31:01Washington ends up using to get a field and then it also like Christian Ellis and Jelani
31:06to buy ended up too far field themselves where by the time they tried to get back down they
31:11couldn't catch up to the returner so again I would like to hear what Springer has to
31:15say about this again I just won't be I most of these plays I only feel a certain level
31:19of comfort to actually say what I think happened because there's so much we don't know but
31:23again from this play like I know somebody said Joshua Bledsoe took a bad angle I don't
31:27really see that as a Joshua Bledsoe problem on that play because I did the same thing
31:36for Del Pettis but I got you same deal hey so the Mondays geez Louise dope I like Del
31:42Pettis do that's crazy yeah I don't really see Del Pettis angle as a problem here I really
31:48think he just has a huge opening to the left side and no one's really there to catch him
31:52so yeah again Marcellus Island Joe Cardona ending up in the same area and dial was the
31:57gunner so I'm guessing he was probably the one at fault also Cardona is Mr. Coach on
32:01the field so you know that had something to do with it I'm sure and then I will see it
32:06again here because this is the one where you actually highlight the names you can see dial
32:10and Cardona same place they end up split that's a seam Ellis as far a field to I can't really
32:15get there and there's no chance that he's going to catch him after that so I mean the
32:19fundamentals have already been set we known it since Bill Belichick was the head coach
32:23and that's why I tweeted that it's being tough means that you can run the ball cover or defend
32:28the run and cover kicks to be fair the Patriots like ran the ball decently but were inconsistent
32:34last year I think that's pretty fair to say and then when it comes to stopping the run
32:37they were a leap of cover in case they weren't very good either so right I know like you
32:42know in speaking against Bill Belichick is a very fine line and I'm not one who likes
32:48to walk it very often but you know let's not pretend like the Patriots were this paragon
32:53of discipline and toughness last year they were tough in one area and then pretty much
32:58everywhere else they were incompetent to a degree not incompetent that's disrespectful
33:02but the coverage was still as good as I think it could have been given who they had out
33:05there but like these issues aren't all brand new it's just more discouraging and it's like
33:10oh the run defense is the one thing they did very well last year and now they actually
33:15are not even like not great they suck recently so you know I get why what Belichick was saying
33:21and all that and Mayo needs to do better and we've talked about that in our other pod where
33:26yeah a lot of that probably is it comes down to being more active and being more of a voice
33:30because you are someone who has led the Patriots defense for years and multiple roles now that
33:35you lead the organization especially defensively it's probably not great for you to take a
33:40step back and be Mr. CEO when like you were in business for a couple years two three years
33:45you've been in football for a lot longer play to your strengths be a linebacker for
33:49the team and get this damn run defense under control to run offense you know I feel like
33:56that's partially a personnel thing I hope that's something that gets figured out as
33:59they get more consistency as you know time goes on maybe they work out the lineup but
34:03the run defense bottom line needs to be better there's no excuses and the kicking game obviously
34:08you can't be letting you know those kind of returns happen that's a second week in a row
34:11where you know Bryce Berenger's had a moment that I'm sure you want back is a hundred percent
34:15I'm with you and I see in the chat now to someone saying Bill flexing his four win season
34:20last year and I I get I get where Bill is coming from because he feels like he got pushed
34:26out of here and exiled and they had Mayo lined up like I get why now that they're one in
34:32six the pettiness is gonna come out that's natural that's human nature and the fact that
34:37he has a platform to do so with McAfee with probably on the Manning cast tonight and he
34:42does the CW like he's gonna do that and all the power to him he has a right to for winning
34:46six championships but at the end of the day they gave built the chance to rebuild this
34:51thing he went 29 and 38 or whatever the numbers are over the last four years and as bad as
34:56they are right now they also weren't good here over the last several seasons in different
35:00areas so if you like I do and play the fence I can see both sides of it where on one hand
35:06he has a right and has a leg to stand on because he got I mentioned I said it already
35:11exiled out of here but also you guys weren't great in a lot of phases here over the last
35:14couple years and that's why you're not the head coach of the Patriots anymore but we're
35:19not gonna do the Belichick thing this is the he put it out there and you know those are
35:26the three things that Belichick has talked about the the running the football the stop
35:30in the run and kick coverage and so it all ties in and that's why we're mentioning it
35:34but that's kind of where we're at that's why the Patriots were called soft was because
35:38of these three areas and that's why we broke down those things those three things today
35:44Jack Taylor God one other thing Drake may on WEI on the culture under Mayo of Brian
35:49actually tweeted out of quotes I'll just read it real quick yeah coach Mayo always preaches
35:53hard work works we know that's one of their phrases working hard and dropping your ego
35:57at the door I think we're learning that there's been some times where guys are having to figure
36:01that out we had a really young team so guys are starting to figure that out and buy into
36:05the process he also said Mayo starting to challenge us what is the identity of this
36:08football team what do we want to be this year as the season goes on he said today in the
36:12meeting we're a one in six football team we are what we put out there also went on to
36:17say so I think we got some guys who are going to make some shifts in the way they approach
36:21things and hopefully get back on track we have heard that sentiment you know Daniel
36:25and qualities talked about the egos kind of born spoke out about guys maybe not having
36:30the right approach like not getting enough sleep not eating the right ways and Kendrick
36:34more can say that because we know Kendrick Bourne like dude post workout stories all
36:37the time like he's clearly putting in the work and trying to be the best version of
36:41himself and you know got shot even even though he had a poor performance on Sunday has also
36:45been very vocal about this team to even be better Jelani to buy all those guys so the
36:50quote sounds good it's it's fair to acknowledge it is a very young team but at the end of
36:55the day you got to rely on your veterans and you got to figure it out or else you know
36:59you're gonna be you're gonna continue on the early Dan Campbell track we're just gonna
37:02keep losing games and in this city it's not gonna turn yeah and there's not as much patience
37:08here for losing as there is in Detroit so you know no for sure but speaking of Drake
37:12May speaking of that quote we're gonna be back tomorrow here on Patriots press pass
37:16with another film room with some with the more optimistic side what we love to do here
37:21on Patriots daily and that's Drake May and it's the fact that the Patriots and you folks
37:25in New England might have a quarterback in him so we're gonna break down his game from
37:29London tomorrow 12 p.m. here on the channel so make sure you keep it locked in rate review
37:34and subscribe to Patriots press pass like the videos follow us on Twitter at T Kyle
37:3939 and at Mike Catholic for around the clock 24 hour coverage of these one in six New England
37:45Patriots so until tomorrow Taylor thanks for joining me thanks everybody for tuning in
37:49and listening take care of yourselves take care of each other and we'll talk to you tomorrow
37:52peace out everybody
37:55you
38:10oh my god
