00:00What's going on everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat
00:27Podcast here on the CLNS Media Network presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix
00:34and GameTime. It's Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth to break down the Patriots Week 12
00:40loss to the Miami Dolphins. But before we jump into that game we had a little Patriots breaking
00:47news within the last hour and it has to do with Jabril Peppers who was reinstated on Monday and
00:54is no longer on the commissioner exempt list. So he's now eligible to be back or he already
01:00could have been in the building right I believe but he wasn't able to practice or play in games.
01:06No team activities right. Yeah so he is now eligible to participate in team activities
01:12that includes practicing and playing games. Sounds like from the NFL statement the
01:18investigation from early October is still ongoing. He's due back in court in January
01:24I think it was January 22nd. So the league said they will you know keep tabs on this and keep
01:31reviewing everything. As he's activated off the exempt list he has to come back onto the Patriots
01:37active roster. So they also the team released a statement that he will return to the active
01:43after active roster. They already had a spot on the 53-man roster so they don't have to make a
01:48corresponding move. Also from the team they said we understand that the league's investigation
01:53into the matter will continue as will the legal process. We will await the outcome of both before
01:59making any further comments. So Jabril Peppers is on the active roster. Where does it go from here
02:07do you think Barth while the whole kind of legal thing still is over his head for another two
02:12months or here so. I mean like you said it's it's still sorry I'm just trying to find a name here.
02:23The it's still hanging over his head like you said and it's still going to be an issue and this is
02:30this specific issue the domestic violence issue is is a non-starter for them. You go back to
02:351996 and the release of Christian Peter this is a zero tolerance issue. You know I know Peppers
02:41has said that kind of frame this as a potential extortion case. I haven't you know I'm not in
02:47courtroom. I don't know what his side's evidence is with the other side's evidences but this is
02:51generally something the Patriots take very seriously. So I would imagine if he is back
02:56on the field there would be something to come with that that you know kind of shows his side
03:01of the story. We'll hear from Gerard Mayo tomorrow he'll shed more light on it but for now he's back
03:06like look he can be back on the roster and they can tell him don't come in the building. Yeah.
03:09They can essentially impose a team suspension or maybe they're comfortable with their
03:15investigation on the side of it and they welcome him back. You know with that court date not till
03:20after the season like the statement from the league said you know he would have missed 12
03:25games which you know the suspension for this sort of thing from the league the baseline is six to
03:31seven games which whether or not that's right or wrong that's the number. So I think the league
03:36just kind of realized that at this point nothing was going to be solved till after the season
03:39and they put it on the team and now we wait and see how the team reacts. Yeah. So that's the big
03:44thing next kind of shoe to drop is do they let him back in the facility and let him practice and play
03:50you know he says his argument in court has been that he has you know video evidence and all that
03:55so if they're comfortable letting him play they are free to do so now but we do hear from Gerard
04:02Mayo tomorrow I think right before 11 30 right in that area so obviously will be a talking point
04:08now we'll see his plan they do they are practicing tomorrow too right I think it's more of a walk
04:14through but yep they leave that was the plan right they will be on the practice field at one o'clock
04:21open locker room at 12 so we will be able to tell if Jabril Peppers is in the building talk to
04:28Gerard Mayo and hopefully get a little more clarity about if he'll be with the team moving
04:33forward but for now he is off the commissioner's exempt list he is on the active roster so he is
04:40again able to participate in all these team activities but they could tell him to stay
04:45away while this investigation keeps going or they could welcome him back if they want to do so so
04:52we'll wait and see again we'll get some more clarity tomorrow but that was the news within
04:56the last hour which Bill Peppers and now we can move on to that football game that took place
05:03on Sunday it was non-competitive for large portions of that you could say maybe they
05:11showed a little fight the Patriots in the fourth quarter there scoring 15 points but
05:1634 15 loss to the Miami Dolphins let's just start how we start all of these shows
05:24lately Barth how do you feel about Gerard Mayo and his coaching staff after seemed like they
05:30were trending and the whole team was trending even though they weren't winning games trended
05:35in the positive direction this was a big step back from recent weeks and the kind of uncompetitive
05:42butt kicking in Miami yeah I would say more than recent weeks look I've used that Jets game as
05:48kind of the bar as kind of the barometer for the you know I last week I talked about you know it
05:55was a poorly coached game it wasn't quite as bad as the Jets but it's poorly coached after the
05:59Titans you know it wasn't quite as bad as Jets I think there's a new floor I really do I think
06:04there's a new basement I think this was the worst at least the Jets game and look not to make excuses
06:09but to just kind of size things up short week first ever short week for this coaching staff
06:15it came just three weeks into season like it wasn't an easy game it was poorly coached but
06:19it wasn't necessarily the easiest spot I'm not saying this was super easy but this is a divisional
06:23team the team you know well especially for the defensive staff that's been here they've game
06:27planned for Miami before they game plan for Tua and Waddle and Hill and Mike McDaniel before and
06:33to come out and just get caught with your pants down like that and then the the things within the
06:38game the penalties that's usually a sign of players that aren't prepared correctly or aren't confident
06:44in their assignments things like that aren't sure of their assignments players like that get a little
06:48bit twitchy so a lot of that's on the coaching staff this is as as much of a mark against the
06:54coaching staff this game as any game we've seen this year you mentioned the defense that was what
07:00I was most disappointed in so you got you had so much issues last week against the Rams with all
07:07this motion right I think they were 83 84 percent of their plays the Rams running motion what did
07:13you expect Miami to do their 1-2 Miami and Los Angeles in motion at the snap and you come out
07:19there and same mistakes the communication was poor Miami ran 93.7 percent of their plays with motion
07:27Tua had all four of his touchdown passes with motion and then you hear in the locker room you
07:32could see it on the field that the players even Gerard Mayo said the communication was poor we
07:37had trouble dealing with it Kyle Duggar who's like your captain and veteran safety I know he's working
07:42through an ankle injury but he's really in the area the wrong area because of just mental lapses
07:49on all four of the touchdowns so that was what kind of bothered me was you just saw this last
07:55week and you struggled with it you knew Miami was going to be motioning the hell out of every snap
08:01which they did and you were still you seemed kind of unprepared as you said uh caught with caught
08:06with your pants down so one of the buzzwords really in the locker room after was just lack
08:12of focus and that comes back to Gerard Mayo and his coaching staff you know if you have defenders
08:19not being focused the penalties on offense a lot of that comes back to focus you have a guy
08:24like Austin Hooper a nine ten-year vet just lining up off sides like that stuff is unacceptable uh
08:31and just comes back to a lack of focus so you you question I don't know do you think
08:36Mayo's message is getting to them here or you know he had the quotes I want to get your thoughts on
08:42his quotes too after the game or he said it's just kind of on the players once they're in between the
08:47white lines just what do you think is the disconnect there between the coaching staff and
08:51the players at the focus level 13 12 12 weeks 12 games into the season isn't where it needs to be
08:59for this team I mean it's tough to pin that down exactly and look it's it's tough to keep a three
09:05and eight team locked in by the way they're officially eliminated from winning the division
09:08yesterday it's still not eliminated from the playoffs but officially eliminated from the
09:12division there is still a path uh but uh they will finish under 500 now guaranteed for the
09:19third year in a row and fourth in the last five so it's hard to keep a team like that engaged
09:25it's hard and you know this was I think some of what happened down the stretch last year you had
09:31a bunch of guy in the last couple years you had a bunch of guys that knew nothing but winning and
09:34didn't really know what to do in this situation van pelts been in Cleveland they've been bad
09:39Mayo's been here the last few years but it can be tough to keep this team engaged
09:43and I do I I don't necessarily know the answer I don't know what the button is to press last time
09:48he called them soft and that worked but as we said at the time you can't just go smashing that
09:53button you're going to have to find different ways to do it I'm not getting paid millions
09:57dollars to figure it out it's not easy to keep a team like this engaged but you got to find a way
10:01especially in year one when you're trying to build a culture and they just haven't done that
10:05yep what'd you so what'd you think of those the comments the big quote after the game was you know
10:11that in between the white lines um did that bother you at all like I get what he's saying like at
10:18there is some responsibility on the players right like you can hammer this stuff home
10:23but at some point Austin Hooper has to have a little accountability too for you know lining up
10:28in the neutral zone or especially the pre-snap penalties which is the big one some of that does
10:34fall on the players but you know some of the message and like some of that comes from the
10:40coaching staff obviously too so did you have a problem with Mayo kind of saying that uh after
10:45the game that once the players are in between the white lines like some of it is on them and
10:50they have to start performing better there too I don't think I had as much of a problem as some
10:54people and and people pointed this out when you look at the question that he's asked it is an
11:00important piece of context that got lost here uh the quote Gerard you said it starts with you but
11:05when do Gerard you said it starts with you but when do the players have to start looking at
11:09themselves I mean you can only do so much when is it on the player so he's being asked specifically
11:14about the players uh that's a pretty loaded question there's a lot like credit to whoever
11:19asked that uh there's a lot of meat on the bone there don't answer it like that's my bigger problem
11:26I I I this is and it's you know kind of become a pattern this year where I understand what he's
11:32saying but he said it in probably the worst way possible and the reality is you don't need to
11:40answer that that is where the classic Bill Belichick I need a coach better we need to play
11:44better like just give them a default answer I that question is set up to fail with an honest
11:52answer because you're being asked basically do you like okay taking you out of it is there blame on
12:00the players which of course there is of course there is but you shouldn't say that as the head
12:07coach and you know it's been compared a little bit to say the the the soft comment earlier this
12:14year and I said at the time well that one didn't bother me a ton because he had said it to the team
12:21in the locker room before and as long as it's addressed with the team that totally changed the
12:26context he also wasn't wrong let's not forget about that they were like very soft at the time
12:30he did say I don't know if you heard him on the radio this morning he was asked about that and
12:36he kind of reiterated it he said again like once you cross the white lines there's nothing I can do
12:42for you and he has said that's been his message since he was here since 19 as a linebackers coach
12:48he says he does tell his players that message a lot okay so that players have he made it seem like
12:54the players have heard that message it wasn't he wasn't saying it to the media for the first time
13:00so that changes the context of it and and jawan bentley I you know came to his defense on twitter
13:05but just don't like recognize at a certain point when there's a question that you just should not
13:10answer and and find the find the way to talk around it find the way to you know I need to
13:15coach better we need to play better right don't it's I don't know that there was a right answer
13:21he could have given to that question to actually answer it and that's what he tried to do that's
13:27what you just got to dodge and move on yeah he did take a lot of accountability most of his
13:32answers started that way like right that's why it's kind of wild that this like yeah yeah it was
13:39the last question of course he almost got out of there but last question yeah I think he realized
13:44kind of he starts walking away from the podium like mid-answer that's when you got to get your
13:49your bill belichick media trading in there and just you know get given give a nothing burger but
13:54um yeah just a lot of the same mistakes so frustrating from from the coaching staff uh
14:01in that aspect uh let's move on we talked about that defense but very quickly uh before we do that
14:08I want to tell you guys about prize picks where you can win up to 100 times your money with as
14:13little as four correct picks you just make your picks in less than 60 seconds and turn your sports
14:18opinions into real money all season long on prize picks barth and i smith our patriots line up every
14:24game day and you can join in or extend it to the entire league with stars like justin jefferson
14:29saquon barkley patrick mahomes and more they have a special free square for thanksgiving night tyreek
14:36hill over or more than half a receiving yard against the packers i believe that's the uh
14:43thursday night game thanksgiving night cap so tyreek hill only needs to receive more than half
14:50a receiving yard for the projection to hit if you're correct on at least one more stat projection
14:55you can walk you can win real cash so download the app today and use code clns to get 50 dollars
15:01instantly after you play your first five dollars lineup on prize picks that's code clns to get 50
15:08dollars instantly after you play your first five dollar lineup on prize picks run your game all
15:15right we talked a little bit in there about some of the defensive lapses yesterday handling the
15:21motion tua just picked them apart like balls out quick tearing up over the middle of the field
15:28just no pass rush um what what'd you just overall thoughts on that defensive performance before we
15:35can get into some of the players and some of the nitty-gritty stuff on that side of the football
15:40i mean you kind of said it and i talked about a lot last week here is a chance for demarcus
15:46covington to show that you know he learned something against the rams that he can adjust
15:51nope didn't see it and look the dolphins are good and the dolphins have talent and they went out
15:56there and made plays but a lot of zone again from the patriots uh moved cristian gonzalez around
16:02they allowed two to get comfortable i don't mind that they didn't blitz a ton because it wasn't
16:05going to make a difference but you still got to get something with four and they really didn't
16:08credit christian bar more he got his first sack and i wish it had come at a better game because
16:13it deserves more attention really incredible that he got back on the field but just overall again
16:19the lack of a plan the lack of urgency on defense was striking yep that in the christian
16:24gonzalez touchdown like you wish it didn't come when you're down 34 to 7 right his first career
16:30touchdown uh he still just keeps getting all his turnovers against the dolphins which is interesting
16:35but uh he was christian gonzalez was awesome as he usually is he did his part i will say though
16:43is another cornerback sneaking up your draft needs here are we gonna start talking about will
16:48johnson travis hunter as a corner maybe not first round maybe second you know day two like
16:55marcus jones i really like him as a you know slot corner but you can see some of the issues when you
17:01move him to like the number two role they might need another cornerback they do need another
17:08cornerback and that could that offseason need is kind of skyrocketing up the list right now
17:14look it would be great to be able to get a guy like you know like a will johnson you know with
17:20a one one a with gonzalez they don't have the luxury of doing that not the draft too many other
17:24needs i mean they should be trying to get a jason mccordy type just solid reliable number two boundary
17:30corner to play opposite gonzalez it'd be it's a nice thought way too many other needs way too many
17:37other needs especially i mean we'll get to the offense there should no longer be a debate about
17:42what their biggest need is there shouldn't be defense also feels easier to buy in free agency
17:51and i don't the corner market isn't great but there are guys like traverius ward dj reed could
17:57be an interesting guy like someone you can pay to come in there play opposite christian gonzalez
18:03slide marcus jones back inside we'd still you know someone just brought up in the chat alex austin
18:10like maybe we see more of him yeah can we see the guys they have alex austin isaiah bouldin i mean it
18:16goes back to the adjustments yeah can we see some of the guys that they have that they i don't know
18:21why they're refusing to play these guys especially i mean we'll get to the colts a good matchup guy
18:27against the colts this week's gotta be alex austin or even zay bouldin like i've been dying to see
18:33some more of zay bouldin anywhere on the field they won't want it they don't want to use them
18:37as a kicker or kick returner so maybe corner but like michael pittman alec pierce ad mitchell like
18:43those guys have some size i get maybe not alex austin versus jalen waddle right like that seems
18:49like a recipe for disaster but see what you have in some of these other guys especially now that
18:53the matchups are going to kind of present for it and allow for it going down the stretch so
18:58um we'd like to see more of alex austin and zay bouldin maybe in those roles so
19:03um anything else though for that that defense i mean are you worried about kyle dugger or do
19:09you think that's more just the ankle injury but the mental side of the game was a real struggle
19:16anything on dugger the the mental side is going to look like a struggle i think if you can't
19:22move the way you want to move because you're going to start overcompensating and trying to
19:27adapt and things like that um i i do think it's mostly the ankle now he had some coverage issues
19:33this year before he got hurt but he's never been much of a coverage player they're really missing
19:36jabril peppers and and you know the ability to split those two safety could be another sneaky
19:41offseason need for this team especially peppers uh isn't coming back so i mean i'm worried about
19:47kyle dugger they can't win when he's playing this way they're not going to play well defensively
19:52when he's playing this way you hope it's just the injury but we'll have to see it was clearly
19:57bothering him at one point like he re-aggravated it during the game he came off the field slowly
20:01so it's clearly still bothering him i think it was his other ankle wasn't it because it was oh was it
20:06it was i just kind of assumed that's on me he he grabbed the ankle that wasn't taped he had his
20:11right ankle taped in his left he grabbed his left ankle so isn't that why you're supposed to tape
20:17both ankles yeah i'm guessing he just taped the ankle that was hurt so i don't know maybe he hurt
20:24the other one he did finish the game but uh we'll see it was not definitely not kyle dugger's best
20:29performance so yeah if you could get jabril peppers back like if he's ready to go that that
20:34would be a big boost um we did see more like marty mapu maybe i mean gerard mayo did say there's
20:41going to be changes i don't know if that would be kyle dugger like the one game oh we just lost
20:46barth some of the games uh dugger did miss we saw uh mapu del pedis jalen hawkins they all got
20:56game balls so maybe they do go uh somewhere without kyle dugger for a little bit there
21:02sit him down let him get healthy barth's coming back in right now there he is banged out so i'm
21:09good all right uh any last yeah i got you got me all right yeah any uh last defensive thoughts
21:18there but before we can talk about this offense i would just say i before it cut out i heard you
21:24talking about the lineup changes i i'm more interested in corner than up front i just don't
21:27think they have the bodies up front uh and i don't think you're in a bench of captains so
21:31yeah i i hopefully that means more alex austin and maybe isaiah bolden
21:36yep well i think lineup changes are definitely coming on the offensive line we saw one mid-game
21:44they sat down trey jacobs uh they put city so in at right tackle who was like their only
21:51healthy lineman on bench right there so it was rough for vaderian low in trey jacobs six
21:59total penalties four on vaderian low two on jacobs i think it was 11 combined quarterback
22:06pressures two sacks um low was the strip sack i put a good amount of that on drake may but it was
22:16vaderian low's guy he was blocking eventually they do sit down trey jacobs you really can't
22:21sit down vaderian low you don't have anyone behind him but the tackle position is not good again they
22:28did go to city so who is a guard even though they he spent his rookie training camp at tackle so
22:34maybe that's an experiment they try again hopefully cayden wallace gets back here and he
22:39can play right tackle to end the year but what are you doing along the offensive line here for these
22:46last five games and just what do you think of that performance from yesterday it was bad it was bad
22:53and this is a reminder that tackle is this team's biggest need i know everybody kind of enjoyed
22:57vaderian low being better than expected for a month but this is a reminder that that was never
23:03sustainable and they got a little bit of help with the continuity but that was you weren't going
23:10to get another season like that out of vaderian low forget the rest of this one right tackle i'm
23:14interested to see what happens because like you said cayden wallace just seemed like he's trending
23:18towards being back you got to see what you have in him at right tackle he's not a left tackle
23:22and i don't need to see michael and winnow at right tackle again i've seen that and the city
23:28so tackle experiment last year didn't work but i like that they put him in there because again
23:32just stop moving michael and winnow and it shows that they're not going to force laden robinson
23:36into that spot anymore which we saw them do earlier this year i want to see cayden wallace at right
23:40tackle i want to see what that looks like and then i think it's it's michael jordan who's going to
23:44lose his job and cole strange comes back ben brown didn't exactly have a hall of fame game yesterday
23:49but he was fine especially compared to what you got from jordan plus it's strange his natural
23:54position i think those are the two changes you make as soon as you can make them right they're
23:58health dependent if neither one of those guys is ready i'd probably just roll with michael jordan
24:02for another week um at right tackle i might consider giving city so a start just because
24:06it was really rough from demontre jacobs but you got to get wallace and strange back in the lineup
24:12yep if i definitely agree with michael jordan and he's been trending in that direction we've
24:18talked about that that play has you know been falling off the last few games if strange isn't
24:24ready would you consider laden robinson there i know he's been working on the left side is that
24:31and maybe he has issues as well but is it at a point where it's like okay the veteran is struggling
24:37let's just see laden robinson and maybe if he ends the year positively that could check the
24:43box for next year you feel comfortable rolling with him at left guard kind of similar with
24:47caden wallace like if he ends the year at right tackle you know a good four games that makes you
24:52feel a little bit more comfortable going into the off season so as laden robinson may be a
24:55consideration for you at left guard if cole strange isn't ready yet i just worry about like
25:03we're getting into that neighborhood where i'm starting to worry about drake may developing bad
25:06habits those were two and we'll get to drake may those were two ugly ugly turnovers he had
25:12due in part to really obscene pressure i mean it wasn't your usual that shouldn't be routine
25:18you should see that kind of pressure once every couple games and it happened to him twice and a
25:23half so if you can't protect the quarterback i'm not ed do they have five guys that can protect the
25:29quarterback i don't know maybe not but i've seen laden robinson's past protection on the right side
25:34it's not going to be any better on the left side i would be hesitant because right now goal number
25:40one has to be making sure you don't screw it up with drake may here over the last five games
25:45because you're starting to see the pressure get to him not on individual plays but on a play-to-play
25:50and even a game-to-game basis and that is the worst possible thing that can happen this is why
25:54i said and i'm not saying that they should sit him down but this was the idea behind sitting him
25:59can he survive six games of it hopefully it's not super unrealistic it's a bit of an ask
26:05if he was facing this for 17 games forget about it forget about it it he'd be done by now so
26:12they they have to make sure every move is done i i really don't care about lane robinson's
26:20development at this point even even when it comes to to cayden wallace like i because i know i
26:25probably sound like an hypocrite here i want to see what they have in cayden wallace if he can't
26:30pass block next next you cannot leave drake may out to dry the way they did yesterday the
26:39individual like the total number of pressures isn't that high but the blow-bys were significant
26:46and they were running around it felt like he was running around a little bit more than previous
26:52games like outside the pocket like having to make plays running around a little bit more so which he
26:57was doing a better job of making plays in the pocket leading up to that so this is where you
27:01get into you don't want that to become a habit for him and you don't want him having to feel like
27:07well i guess i got a stiff arm this 290 pound defensive lineman off of me like that's and he
27:12said everything it was a dumb play that's a dumb play but when you're facing pressure like that
27:16over and over and over and you're losing the game at a certain point you're gonna look at that and
27:23say well i guess i have to do something about it because nobody else is and you don't want that
27:27mentality becoming internalized because that's how you get a reckless quarterback yeah definitely
27:34yeah that's the interesting line you have to kind of walk it's on the offensive line especially
27:39because you know it'd be some one thing to just say we're gonna play jayvon baker at wide receiver
27:45the whole game and get him snaps but you know when it's laden robinson or cayden wallace for as great
27:51as it would be to put those guys in and have them play a great five games and you go in the next
27:56season being okay laden robinson's are starting left guard cayden wallace can play right tackle
28:00the downside like of two rookies and pass protection for five games is the pressure
28:06going to get too much uh for drake may if there's free rushers on mental lapses right like they
28:12can't pick up a stunt or a line game or a twist or anything right now is that going to keep trending
28:17and is it just going to be way too much for drake may so maybe if you just get one of those guys in
28:22like cayden wallace that right tackle probably makes the most sense because the play there
28:26is it was just benchable uh as you saw in miami so he'd be next to mike and winu that's his natural
28:33position cayden wallace at right tackle so maybe that's an easier switch and then if cole could
28:38come back at left guard that would be a real boost i think uh to try and settle that offensive line
28:44down just a little bit and get a little bit better play to to end the year here but uh let's do a
28:50little bit more on drake um it wasn't you know we i hit you with all the nerd stats last week
28:57because it was they were all good they the nerd stats didn't love his performance as much this
29:02week definitely didn't seem like he was or he definitely wasn't the biggest problem on the team
29:07he had a few out of structure plays he finally hit the big one uh to austin hooper but he had
29:13some misses earlier in the game but what'd you think of drake's day kind of as a whole there
29:19in miami um you know there were some high points certainly the throw to to austin hooper was very
29:27impressive but the turnovers are still at the forefront the two more one fumble one interception
29:34both avoidable the interception a little reminiscent to the one in tennessee where he
29:37didn't get enough on a throw away now it came because jalen ramsay came in unblocked again
29:42on a blitz and got right in his face but uh had a third one that he was lucky got got overturned
29:47that was a pretty i think they got it right as a pretty borderline call um you're still seeing
29:52these roller coasters where there's some unbelievable plays and and there's some really
29:56head-scratching turnovers and and either one has to go up or the other has to go down
30:01because it's not a sustainable rate right now and he has 11 turnovers in essentially six starts
30:07six and a quarter if you factor in the jets game that's two turnovers a game basically that's
30:13that's a lot and if you're gonna overcome that he needs to do even even when the pieces around
30:18will get better and that will help but he's gonna need to do more i think the easier things cut down
30:22on the turnover so you know it was another rookie drake may game you saw lots of like but you also
30:29saw some things that scared you i didn't mind the interception because it did get tipped and
30:38it was a hell of a play by the miami defensive lineman to like get off his block and then make
30:43a one-handed catch you could say maybe just you know you have jalen ramsey right in your face
30:47running at you free maybe just dirt the ball put it in antonio gibson's feet or throw it away but
30:53like that that was like tip your cap to the dolphins for you know getting the tip and then
30:59that guy making a great catch so and i think he kind of said that after the game like wasn't his
31:05worst decision the fumble he said was horrible like trying to swim move a guy so that one was
31:10bad yeah what point do you get concerned with the turnovers is that like if he's still turning it
31:19over at this clip week eight next season or is there a point where like okay like he has a turnover
31:28problem this is concerning because i don't want to be too concerned now because again he's a rookie
31:34you're gonna ride this roller coaster especially in this offense where he has to do a lot of it
31:39right he just said he's trying to make plays in some situations but what point do you think it
31:46does become a concern and and a problem if you could try and pinpoint that so well let me say
31:54this first i i don't think it's a concern right now he he still has time but if he alex van pelt
32:00mentioned the 10 interceptions by the end of the year you know staying under 10 interceptions for
32:05the year which right now that would mean he throws three or fewer in the last five games would be
32:09great at this point that'd be great if you can kind of nip the turnover thing in the bud now
32:16then when you get to the offseason you're not worried about it and as you design the offenses
32:23you continue to build out the offense you can get more complex because you already have that box
32:27checked if you're going through the off season as a coach and and you know designing and refining
32:33the offense well now you if the turnover thing's still a problem that's a factor and well can we
32:40run some more complex concepts can you know can we do this can we do that or do the training wheels
32:45still have to be on and maybe you get there he wouldn't be the first rookie quarterback that
32:48that's still an issue going in a year or two but there would be a significant benefit of him putting
32:53it to bed this year even if he can put it to bed with just five weeks to go maybe too late at this
32:58point i still think he can like if he has if he can keep it under a turnover game right if he has
33:03four turnovers or fewer over the last five games i'll feel pretty good about it i'll say lesson
33:07learned uh when does it become a problem yeah i think probably midway next year if he has like a
33:13full season of starts so when would he make his 17th start it would be we what probably five
33:19what he'll play oh yeah it would be pretty early when all right so call it once he gets around like
33:262025 starts if it's still at this rate if it's still to a game and look it's not going to be
33:32like all right you know he's turning over twice again it just drops off to nothing right it's
33:36going to be it's not going to be perfectly linear it's going to fade down if you're not seeing any
33:42progress in it by like middle end of october next year then i'm going to be worried about it because
33:49what you know he should at that point have a better roster around him he's going to be seeing
33:54a lot of these teams for the second third time he's going to have a better idea of what's going
33:57on with his opponent uh at that point i think you start to raise the alarm bells but that's not to
34:03say that okay just take that long because you can there's real benefits in getting it figured out
34:09sooner yeah definitely yeah if you could end with the three and five and keep it at that 10 mark
34:16that van pelt said that would be amazing well that's interceptions though like the fumble thing
34:20he didn't mention fumbles right he didn't which honestly is a bigger concern to me because
34:26you're going to throw interceptions we know he's going to be kind of a an interception
34:29ish prone quarterback i think he's going to probably have double digit interstate
34:33even if he hits that apex he's still going to double digit interceptions uh are close to it
34:38most years every time he gets hit in the pocket you're kind of expecting a fumble at this point
34:45you're looking for the ball like that's the one that really needs to be fixed because that like
34:50again to the josh allen comps all right fine if that's what we're using as a blueprint josh allen
34:54throws a ton of interceptions he makes it work because he makes some really outstanding plays
34:58and there needs to be more plus plays on the other side of it that's the other way you counter this
35:01turnover problem and some of that will come with better personnel the fumble thing is really like
35:06there's not a lot of quarterbacks that fumble at a rate like this he has to be much better holding
35:12on to that ball when he gets hit and it's not the weird thing is like it's not even like he's like
35:16running and scrambling getting hit in the open field and fumbling the ball they're all strip
35:20sacks has to be better about that yesterday's was more like the running and open field trying to
35:26swim move the guy but oh i call that a strip sack you're not really going to be in that situation
35:31that kind of situation on the open field where you're backpedaling with somebody coming at you
35:36that low like that's i i still count that as a strip so i'm talking about like he's running
35:42and some linebacker clocks him out of nowhere and it's like oh there goes the ball because he got
35:46blown up right it's situation it he hasn't like been taking these massive hits where oh yeah of
35:52course the ball came i think i was one of them but you know it's been a lot of just he's been
35:57the texans one where like he got clocked from the blind side that was that was one of those yeah and
36:03that's also you know you say put a better supporting cast around him and you hope that
36:07falls like let's not let free rushers in in 2.2 seconds and have the chance even to get a strip
36:15sack so you hope that you know the better supporting cast uh around him will help kind
36:20of cut down on those turnovers he doesn't have to carry the load and try to make all these plays
36:25um but uh yeah that was that was drake's day just kind of riding that that rookie rollercoaster yet
36:31again you get some good and you get some bad so uh before we get to the rest of the offense and
36:37kind of close this one out um if you want to go see drake may play live uh this sunday make sure

37:50$20 off download game time today what time is it game time all right just any uh last thoughts
37:58on anything offensive related we saw wasn't the best day for remandre stevenson but some of that
38:04had to do with the offensive line we saw a little bit more antonio gibson who i'm still we should
38:09see more of it because even more happened when antonio gibson gets the ball anything from those
38:14backs or you can go to the receivers as well there well i mean a shame they couldn't run the
38:20ball super well after the performance they had running against miami last time looks like caisson
38:25booty's maybe falling off he had another rough game wasn't getting open a ton uh two offensive
38:30pass interferences which you don't see a ton of uh the offensive offsides also i mean all the
38:34penalties are inexcusable but some really bizarre ones um but yeah i think booty's kind of falling
38:40off which is is impacting the offense because even like he was the deep threat even more so
38:45than they were before now it's all underneath and in the middle yeah i think they're 6 of 17
38:53drake and booty on like passes over 10 yards they were over three uh yesterday against miami so
39:00that's been a part of their offense and they've been kind of going to this shorter shorter passing
39:05game quick passing game but they haven't been able to get those kind of bigger plays downfield
39:10that connection with drake and booty isn't necessarily there so um that's i i don't know
39:17i would like to see jayvon baker there but you know you put him out for 10 snaps and he runs
39:22the wrong route it looks like you know drake fires a pass into the dirt so he got his first target
39:28but i don't know like i would love to see the kids because you know booty like
39:35pass interferences they the chemistry is not there he's wearing coverage
39:40and i don't want to get on too much because like he's not an x receiver and he's kind of being
39:44forced to play x in this offense but yeah you have jayvon baker who's an x and like if booty's
39:50gonna make mistakes like we know baker's probably gonna make mistakes again you just saw it but
39:55maybe he can give you a play or two one of those explosive plays but if they just don't trust him
39:59to be out there like that that's a again a difficult kind of bridge to walk or toe to line
40:07or whatever the saying is but um i don't know if we'll see more maybe more baker down the stretch
40:13but um they do kind of have their receiver you know hierarchy it seems like it's you know booty's
40:20out there all the time polk plays in 12 personnel when they go to 11 it's pop and kb so
40:26i don't know if that that will get adjusted down the stretch there but we'll see how the i would
40:32like more of the kids but if they're going to be making those mental errors might not be able
40:36be comfortable playing them out there so uh is that it offense uh yeah that's it for offense
40:43yep i think that's it so uh just very quickly uh we got to get out of here for taylor and
40:49mike to take over but just special teams still just not great entire performance missed the kick
40:57uh bryce barringer had a another kind of misfire the 39 yard punt at the end of the first half
41:02there so they also what happened on that first return like schooler standing right next to him
41:07and just did he think he called fair catch but even so then you stand in front of him not next
41:12to him and he's still within reach to get him i didn't watch it back but i remember the brought
41:18remember the broadcast thought he called fair catch yeah the broadcast thought a lot of things
41:22i'm not going on the broadcast the broadcast mappu marte mappu mappu same same broadcast crew
41:29this also who the hell calls it wreck yards like rack yards is one thing yards after receiving
41:34yards that rec stands for receiving dude i've never heard wreck yards ill i got douche chills
41:41from that maybe that's just me i don't know that bothered me don't you have love don't you love
41:47having like the fifth and sixth broadcast teams nowadays i i sometimes i put it on just because
41:53like i'll pause the game and go back and look at stuff and so it's tough to sync it up at the radio
41:59i might just have to go bob and zoe full time yeah i feel that but yeah that would recommend
42:05everybody else do that you don't all have to go back and look at the game like that
42:09bob and zoe way to go definitely nine day five but yeah that punt that was interesting because
42:15he took it like 13 15 yards something in that range so punt coverage issue just it doesn't feel
42:22like they've been able to put a full game together in that unit uh since early in the season so just
42:28looking for that uh full kind of game they're still from that that special teams unit but
42:33um unless you have any last thoughts or any notes we didn't get to i believe that is it
42:41anything to end with um yeah i think that's pretty much it all right so i believe we're
42:48going to be back tomorrow right is that still i think that's unless you want to do wednesday
42:53morning but at that point it may make more sense just do tomorrow night yeah i think tomorrow
