00:00All right, everyone, welcome back into another live edition of the Patriots Beat Podcast
00:29here on the CLNS media network presented by our wonderful friends over at PrizePix, GameTime
00:36and PXG.
00:38It is Brian Hines back as always with Alex Barth for a busy show today.
00:42We have the Patriots getting ready to go play the Tennessee Titans this weekend.
00:47We have the trade deadline less than a week away.
00:50We've all become way too familiar with the NFL's concussion protocol and all the steps
00:56and phases because of Drake May's activity.
00:58So we will get to it all, then, of course, we have our PrizePix lineup and maybe talk
01:03a little college football at the end of this bad boy.
01:07But we will start with the Titans, the 1-6 Titans, and Drake May going through that concussion
01:15protocol again.
01:17He's been out on the practice field, so that's positive.
01:20Kind of reading between the lines, right?
01:22We heard from Gerard Mayo yesterday, he said he couldn't, Drake couldn't be out there for
01:27more than 30 minutes.
01:29So that would put him in kind of phase three where, you know, you have to stay under that
01:3330 minute threshold.
01:35But then we get out there today and he's out there for the media portion of the start of
01:41practice, which he wasn't yesterday.
01:43So it looks like he was ramping up a little bit.
01:45At least he didn't suffer a setback, right?
01:48But it seems like he was ramping up a little bit.
01:50Looks like maybe he's in phase four now.
01:52So if this all goes well and maybe tomorrow he's cleared for full activity and then just
01:58has to get cleared by the other, the independent kind of doctor and he's go time.
02:03So seems like it's been encouraging progress on the Drake May front.
02:07I don't know if that's how you look at it and maybe trending in the direction of playing
02:13on Sunday.
02:14You don't want to declare anything because it's again concussions that can be tricky.
02:17He can feel good and then wake up tomorrow and have signs or symptoms.
02:21But right now, what we've seen, what we've heard, even Gerard Mayo, just kind of overall
02:25tone of the whole thing doesn't seem like they're that concerned that he might miss
02:30the game Sunday and seems like it's trending in a good direction.
02:32Yeah, look, a lot of the times when you get to this point, the question is not whether
02:38or not the player will be cleared.
02:39It's even once they're cleared, did they get enough practice time in during the week to
02:44be able to play?
02:45Like, because you can't just not be concussed, like you sort of have to know what you're
02:49doing.
02:50You know what the game plan is and all that.
02:51And I feel like that gets lost sometimes in these situations.
02:53Now the good news is because of a unique quirk in the, in the concussion protocol for
02:57quarterbacks, assuming he was in phase four today, which like you said, reading between
03:03the lines, it seems like he was, I'm not reporting that.
03:05I don't know that for sure, but reading between the lines, assuming he was in phase four today.
03:10So phase four phase three, like you said, 30 minute practice phase for full practice,
03:15non-contact phase five, full practice uninhibited.
03:20All practices for quarterbacks are non-contact.
03:24So essentially Drake may in phase four can still go through what for him is a regular
03:29practice day.
03:30It doesn't mean he did, but he can.
03:33And if he did that, and then tomorrow he's in phase five, which would again be a full
03:39practice day.
03:41Well, now he was out there for half an hour on Wednesday, which is, they probably crammed
03:46right in that half an hour.
03:48And then full day, Thursday, full day, Friday.
03:52That might be enough.
03:53Like, I don't know what their bar is, but that's a good amount of practice time.
03:57Most of the time you had a guy who was dealing with like a sore ankle, right?
04:01And he practiced that much.
04:03Assuming the ankle was good.
04:04He'd play.
04:05Now this is obviously different, right?
04:06We're talking about brain injury, brain injury.
04:08That's different.
04:09But if it comes down to whether or not he's prepared enough, like if he does get cleared
04:14and it comes down to whether or not he's prepared enough, I think he has a shot to be prepared
04:19enough.
04:20I think he does.
04:21That's not me saying he's going to play, but that's like the potential is there.
04:25I, at the beginning of the week, I thought it was crazy.
04:28Just you don't see players play the week after concussion.
04:32You just never see it, especially, you know, in the wake of all the two of stuff and it
04:37being another quarterback, you know, it was the league going to be extra careful.
04:41It feels like it's on the table, doesn't it?
04:44Definitely.
04:45Yeah.
04:46I mean, he was out there today from the start, which again, like when we go out there on
04:51Wednesday and Gerard says he can't practice more than 30 minutes, we go out for stretching
04:55and we got the first two periods and he wasn't out there, which I guess if you're limited
04:59to 30 minutes, you probably want him in team periods, right?
05:02So they might have been waiting for that.
05:04So now he gets a Thursday, a full practice.
05:07It appears because he was out there from the start, which was a change.
05:10So it seems like maybe he's trending in that way.
05:13And I was trying to find the quote, didn't Gerard even say like, he'd be pretty comfortable
05:18in the, you know, this might just be some coach speak too, but like, he'd be pretty
05:21comfortable with Drake starting even if he didn't log, like, yeah, he didn't specifically
05:27say this week.
05:28I interpreted that more to mean they didn't expect Drake to like fall behind when he was
05:33hurt.
05:34I thought about that quote too, but I, like you said, coach speak.
05:36I interpreted that more as like, you know, you get a bad concussion, like you can't come
05:40into the facility.
05:41You're home lights off, right?
05:43I interpreted that more as like, no, he'll be around for the day to day, which he has
05:47been.
05:48We've seen that.
05:49I interpreted it more as that.
05:50All right.
05:51That's fair.
05:52Yeah.
05:53I was trying to find the quote, but I couldn't find it.
05:54Hang on.
05:55I can pull it up pretty quickly.
05:56Was it Wednesday?
05:57It was Wednesday.
05:58Yeah.
05:59I wrote about it on Wednesday.
06:00I remember pulling it specifically.
06:01Give me a second to find it, but I know I have it.
06:06So yeah.
06:07Yeah.
06:08It looked like again yesterday with the 30 minute thing, it was phase three today.
06:11Looks like, again, looks like we're not hard reporting here, but it looks like he was upgraded
06:15to phase four.
06:17And if everything was clear, then he can go to the phase five, which is full football
06:20activity, full contact, which for a quarterback, there's no contact anyway in practice.
06:27And then he gets cleared by the club physician and then the independent neuro doctor.
06:31But here's the quote from Mayo.
06:34I do have confidence that if the league says he's ready to play, that he will be able to
06:38go out there and operate.
06:40I feel very comfortable putting Jacoby Berset in there as he's a professional and always
06:44stays ready, as you could see from the last game.
06:46So like, I think essentially what that means, like I read that as like, and basically like
06:53they weren't ruling it out, they weren't ruling it out.
06:55I don't think it was them saying like, this is the plan.
06:59I didn't read it like that, but like as of Wednesday, it was an option, which it, you
07:03know, based on the timeline certainly seems like, yep.
07:08So it looks like maybe some positive news there.
07:11I do want to ask you, cause I've seen this kind of topic and Alex Van Pelt even mentioned
07:17it a little bit today, talking about Drake as a, as a scrambler, as a, you know, we've
07:21talked a lot about getting them involved in the design quarterback run game, which he
07:25says, you know, you see him take some hits and he's so good as a scrambler.
07:30Maybe we don't want to be incorporating that a lot.
07:33But you know, in specific important situations, he said like a fourth and one or a game on
07:39You know, you go back to the preseason game where they're on the goal line and he can
07:42score a touchdown, like important situations.
07:44They might bring that out.
07:45Do you like that kind of game plan with him going forward?
07:49We're like, Hey, he's gonna, and to be clear, they said they weren't going to really harness
07:54in his scrambling ability.
07:55They know that's such a big part of this game.
07:57You see through two and a half starts, how big, big his legs are to his game.
08:03That's part of the reason you drafted him at number three.
08:05So I agree with them, but do you agree with the plan?
08:08Maybe don't run him as much in the design quarterback run game because he can make plays
08:12as a scrambler and you want to kind of protect him a little bit.
08:15So I would do a little bit just to have that there for something for the defense to be
08:21thinking about, especially when the run game struggling.
08:23But overall, I like the approach.
08:25Don't subject the kid to the necessary hits like that makes all the sense in the world.
08:29And he is, that's not to say he's not going to get hit, but you know, he's going to scramble.
08:34Those hits are going to be there.
08:35This is something I always talk about with Josh Allen, which is one of my criticisms.
08:39Not about yet.
08:40Don't don't smirk because this is part of the point that nobody understands this take.
08:45It's not about Josh Allen.
08:46It's about the bills.
08:47I feel like the bills and their fans.
08:51There's like this belief that if Josh Allen runs too much, he gets banged up by the end
08:56of the year.
08:57He's useless.
08:58If he doesn't run enough, the offense sucks and you have that is like a national debate
09:03every year.
09:05I feel usually right around November, it's like, should they run Josh Allen more to win
09:08games or save it to the playoffs?
09:11So that's fair.
09:12And I feel like that, that bills fans believe there's this magical equilibrium that like
09:17if they find like X number of runs though in the super bowl, I don't know that that
09:21exists.
09:22I don't know that that equilibrium exists personally.
09:27I would rather play on the side of, well, that's not get the crap beat out of the kid.
09:32Right.
09:33So this is now a conversation.
09:34Patriots fans are going to have to have, where is that equilibrium?
09:37But I think the bills for a few years have aired more every at the beginning of the year,
09:45every year, I feel like we hear them say, no, no, no, we're not going to run Josh as
09:48much this year.
09:49We learned our lesson.
09:50And then it's like, all right, this time of year and the run game sucks.
09:54And suddenly Josh Allen's running 15 times a game.
09:56And then in December, now it's his elbow or it's his shoulder or it's his knee or whatever.
10:00Right.
10:01It's not the same because they had to put too much on him.
10:04Ideally you build up a roster where he doesn't need to do it because you have other playmakers,
10:09but we'll get there.
10:10That's a few years away for the Patriots and apparently never going to happen for the bills
10:13because they've never really shown any interest in it.
10:15But yeah, Jay, they're running James Cook more this year, aren't they?
10:20How's it?
10:21It's not.
10:22But how's that going?
10:23I mean, there's six and two.
10:25He's averaging.
10:26He's got seven touchdowns.
10:27The averaging have been better on the ground this year.
10:29They have.
10:30I don't know.
10:31The point.
10:32All right.
10:33So just wait on it because they'll still probably bills that they'll still run him in the right.
10:37The point being like with Drake May, I don't mind erring on the side of let's have him
10:43making plays with his arms more than his legs so he doesn't take a ton of unnecessary shots.
10:47Now I'd run him a little bit again, just it gives the defense something to think about.
10:53And let's, you know, also in Alex Van Pelt said today, this was a coaching point.
10:57You got to protect yourself better when you're in the open field as a quarterback, right?
11:01You got to protect your slide head first, which I know sounds dangerous, but that essentially
11:03means just crumple up, give yourself up, you know, be aware of your surroundings because
11:07people say, oh, it's a dirty hit.
11:09Like that's not on him for not himself.
11:12There's going to be people taking shots at you if you're playing quarterback and they're
11:15not all going to be clean.
11:16And part of protecting yourself as a quarterback, it's just as much knowing what to do to avoid
11:22the dirty hits as it is to avoid the clean ones, if not more so.
11:26Right.
11:27You know, Tom Brady at the end of his career talked about how he became very careful about
11:32where he put his feet in the pocket.
11:34Not just while he was back there waiting to throw, but after he threw the ball to make
11:38sure that nobody's going to grab his ankles or he wasn't gonna step on anybody or anything
11:41like that kind of thing.
11:43So work on the kid with that.
11:46But I don't mind them limiting the running overall.
11:49I'm actually okay with that.
11:50Like let the kid be quarterback, let him be a quarterback and the running is just a bonus
11:56as opposed to what's been the strategy.
11:58And I keep picking on the bills because that's been the comp, but you know, the Panthers
12:01ran into this with Cam Newton.
12:05The chiefs mostly avoided it with my homes.
12:06They were pretty good about it.
12:07He's also not like as big, but like the Ravens with Lamar have gone through this.
12:12Like don't, it should be, I'm going to look to throw and if it's not there, then I'll
12:19take off.
12:20Whereas you don't want it to become taking off becomes the first thought.
12:24And some of that comes with like better blocking, trusting your wide receivers to catch the
12:28football, which might be difficult right now, but you don't want that to become such an
12:33immediate instinct because that's how he's going to get hurt.
12:37Yep.
12:38And you said like, just play quarterback first.
12:40He's been impressive as a quarterback, right?
12:42Like he's been impressive as a thrower.
12:43So it's not something he has to do.
12:45So I kind of agree with you.
12:47Don't make him, you know, have to face the hits as van Pelt says, like there's going
12:52to be key spots where it is a game changer.
12:55That's such a big part of his game and you can take advantage of it there.
12:57So, and also say like, I think he has done a relatively good job protecting himself.
13:03Like he generally does try to get out of bounds or, or slide.
13:07That one was a little funky where he like breaks two tackles and then he goes down and
13:12you know, maybe that's a spot where, you know, van Pelt said today, as you just said, go
13:15head first, go down that way.
13:17Cause guys are going to be coming from behind you.
13:19So I do generally think he's done a good job protecting himself.
13:23I mean, we went through his injury history last show and it was only like two ankle injuries.
13:28So he's been, he's been pretty good.
13:31I mean, there's room to get back.
13:32Like it's not Jane Daniels.
13:33Remember this was the big knock on Jane Daniels was that he was, he had the whole highlight
13:37video of just taking him just like jumping into defenders.
13:41So it's not that, but you know, it's, it's the NFL guys are bigger, faster, stronger.
13:46There's an adjustment and you kind of hope that this one learning experience and, and,
13:50and you learn from it.
13:51You take that moving forward.
13:52I, that, when I say like learn to protect himself, that's what I'm talking about is
13:55just like, you know, they're guys are going to be coming at you late.
13:58They're going to be coming at you from behind, just like be cognizant of that.
14:02And you know, if it's the super bowl, go for the extra yard by all means.
14:08Week eight against the jets in the first quarter, you can get down like exactly.
14:14Get the first down, get down, whatever.
14:16So yeah.
14:18So again, it looks like maybe he's progressing in a positive way to play this Sunday.
14:24If you want to look at the Titans, if he does play maybe one of the more complicated defenses
14:31he's played, they have some good, they have some talent on the, on the defense.
14:35The scoring as a whole, hasn't been great probably because of that Detroit game last
14:39week, which was kind of fluky.
14:41They gave up 50 points, but Detroit started like six drives inside their own 30.
14:47They gave up some down.
14:48So it was kind of a funky score based off how you look at it.
14:54But just looking at may, if, if he does start here, what do you, what would you like to
15:01see from him?
15:02And again, against a little more complex schematic defense that maybe he's seen through his first
15:07three games, just limiting the turnovers of the turnover worthy plays.
15:13It didn't turn the ball over against Jacksonville, but had a couple that probably could have
15:16been.
15:17I think that's still the biggest thing I'm monitoring.
15:18And then the sprays, like it's, it's kind of the same, I don't mean to sound like a
15:22broken record, but it's kind of the same things at this point, right?
15:24Just cut down on the turnovers, cut down on the wild throws.
15:27Besides that, it's looked pretty good.
15:29And he mentioned the talent on this Titans defense.
15:33You can get a really good look at it.
15:34If you go look at their injury report, cause they're all on there.
15:36So if, if they're really banged up, like go out and assert yourself, right?
15:41Third overall pick against, against a bunch of backups, make it look like that.
15:46Despite what's around you.
15:47Yep.
15:48Two long injury reports, both, both teams this week.
15:52It's one of those that time of year.
15:53Yep.
15:54Getting into it, getting into it.
15:55But yeah, you mentioned turnover where they plays sprays.
15:59Like I guess it's encouraging that it's just the same.
16:01Well, I don't know.
16:03Would you say it's encouraging that through three starts?
16:05It's the same errors that you'd like to see them correct or, um, yes and no.
16:11You obviously like them to correct that, but if there's going to be errors as a rookie,
16:16you feel like it would rather be the occasional spray than his eyes are in the complete wrong
16:21place.
16:22He's taken off way too early, stuff like that, you know?
16:25So maybe it's a positive, but also how many times could these same errors stack up before
16:31you kind of start to get worried about it?
16:33I think the bigger thing for me at this point is you're going to start it and maybe not
16:39this week.
16:40This is more like when we get closer to Thanksgiving, you're going to start, teams are going to
16:44have tape on them and the tendencies are going to be there.
16:47And you're going to know like left, right, deep, short, right.
16:49What does he want to do?
16:51That's when I'm going to look more at like, okay, how teams are going to start having
16:55answers for them.
16:56They, right now you're just kind of playing them straight up because your center is going
16:59off what he did in college in a very different offense.
17:01And, um, you see a lot of quarterbacks come out of the gate strong.
17:05And then once there's some tape, right, we had that whole string of backups last year
17:09for like every week there was, whether it was Josh Dobbs, whether it was Tommy DeVito,
17:14whoever it was, there was that whole run.
17:16And this would happen.
17:17They, they, you know, kind of go off for two or three weeks because nobody really knew
17:20what to expect.
17:21All right, here's their tendencies.
17:23Let's create a real game plan.
17:24And boom, they're shutting them down.
17:25And I'm not saying that's going to happen to Drake May, but it is going to get tougher
17:28the more tape he puts out there.
17:30And that's the next big check box for me is like, once teams really are starting to truly
17:36game plan for him, which again, I think will happen probably later this year, again, talking
17:42closer to Thanksgiving.
17:44That's when I want to see really how he responds and how he makes adjustments right now.
17:48Just, just get your feet wet, get comfortable.
17:49And that's what he's doing and be comfortable so that by the time those adjustments start
17:53to come, you're able to handle more and handle some adjustments.
17:58Yep.
17:59All right.
18:00Well, there's your Drake May opening 20 minutes, almost 20 minutes on Drake May.
18:03So let's move on to as usual, as usual.
18:06But let's move on to the rest of the offense very quickly.
18:10Before we do that prize picks, you could now win up to 100 times your money on prize picks
18:15with as little as four correct picks.
18:17You just make your picks in less than 60 seconds and turn your sports opinions in the real
18:21money all season long on prize picks.
18:23Arthur and I will submit our Patriots lineup every game day.
18:27We'll do it at the end of today's show.
18:28So make sure you stay tuned to that.
18:31And they also have real money daily fantasy platform with an injury insurance policy.
18:36So your lineup stay in play, even if one of your players gets injured, if your player
18:40leaves in the first half and doesn't return.
18:41So you had Drake May in your lineup.
18:43We did last week.
18:45Prize picks will keep your lineup live once he leaves in the first half and does not come
18:49back.
18:50So download the app today and use code C.L.N.S. to get $50 instantly.
18:54After you play your first $5 lineup, that's prize picks code C.L.N.S. to get $50 instantly.
19:01After you play your first $5 lineup on prize picks, run your game.
19:06All right, let's talk some wide receivers.
19:10You mentioned the drop issue.
19:12We talked a lot about that after the game on Monday for drops last week.
19:18Couple other passes even going off guy's hands, but not technically drops.
19:22Jalen Polk was upgraded to a full participant in practice.
19:25So how do you see him working back into the rotation?
19:28Do we see more or any Javon Baker this week?
19:32How are you looking at this wide receiver group against the Titans on Sunday?
19:36Well, first off, like, you know me, I'm kind of at the point now where I'd like to see
19:40Javon Baker.
19:41And I know it's been a rough couple.
19:43You know, he struggled at the end of camp.
19:45He had the hiccups, as Mike Reese reported, in London.
19:51Put him on the field.
19:52Put him on the field.
19:53Let's see.
19:54Right.
19:55Play the kids.
19:56Like, that's where I'm at.
19:57Play the kids.
19:58And I would ease Jalen Polk back in.
19:59I wouldn't put him back in the role he had.
20:02Again, your top three receivers should be Douglas, Bourne, Booty.
20:08Like those are your three best guys right now.
20:11Get Baker in there, 20, 25%, Polk in there, 20, 25%.
20:15I don't need to see KJ Osborne.
20:17I don't need to see Taekwon Thornton.
20:18Honestly, keep him inactive so you can trade them.
20:20Like both those guys should be gone on Tuesday because you just need to free up the reps.
20:25They signed a wide receiver off to the practice squad the other day.
20:28I think some of that, it got us some NFL experience played for the Dolphins.
20:32Brief lose that will miss like, all right, so you have some emergency depth there if
20:35you really need it.
20:36They have John Giles as well.
20:38I don't need to see Taekwon Thornton.
20:39I don't need to see KJ Osborne.
20:40I'm good.
20:41Let the kids play.
20:43And then Bourne and Douglas, obviously just being at the top of the depth chart should
20:46play.
20:47Yep.
20:48Taekwon also added to the injury report today with an ankle injury.
20:51So yeah, maybe just don't even risk that inactive if you're trying to trade him.
20:56There was the report that they were getting some calls on him and Osborne.
20:59So it seems like maybe some movement there at the wide receiver position.
21:03We can talk about that too in a bit, but yeah, I'm with you.
21:07I want to see Jayvon Baker.
21:09I think it's time again, Gerard said he's an explosive guy with the ball in his hand.
21:13That's so we, they started putting them on kick returns, but you need something else
21:18in that wide receiver room, especially, you know, an X, the guy who can play the backside
21:22that we've talked about so much and that's your body type.
21:25That's your skillset there.
21:26So let's see what he can do.
21:28Good fit with Drake May.
21:29We've also talked about that a lot.
21:30So if Drake plays, maybe get that connection going and then yeah, just Polk, you know,
21:35it was a, it was a concussion for him, but maybe just sit in a week and watching, you
21:41know, going to the ninth floor.
21:43I don't know if he went to the lighthouse or anything, but just sitting and watching
21:46for a week, see how he bounces back and maybe he can get back on track and end the year
21:51strong.
21:52That would be really encouraging out of your second round pick receiver there, but a booty
21:57born Douglas, your top three, and then let's see the kids.
22:00Let's get them involved a little bit and see if they can get bigger roles to end the year.
22:04I'm with you on that one.
22:05So can they run the ball this week?
22:09Can they run the ball against the Titans?
22:11Not a great run defense, but they do have Jeffrey Simmons and Tavon Dre sweat.
22:16So tough, you know, Tavon Dre sweat was a guy we talked a lot about in the draft.
22:20He is on the, he was still on the injury report today, right?
22:24Yeah, yes.
22:26He was a, he was a DNP again today with a hip injury.
22:29So we'll see Tavon Dre sweat status.
22:31Jeffrey Simmons, uh, is full go.
22:34So he'll, he'll be in the middle of there.
22:35So do you think they can finally get out of the negative yards before contact and maybe
22:41try to get some positive momentum on the ground this week?
22:45Oh, like they still have Jeffrey Simmons.
22:46They have some other guys up front.
22:47It's going to be a real test for that, that Patriots interior offensive line, you know,
22:51good players up there.
22:52So, um, hopefully, but I thought remodeling Stevenson coming back would fix it.
22:58And so far that hasn't.
22:59And if you have to sacrifice your run blocking, so the past blocking is better, which it feels
23:05like it's kind of what has happened.
23:08I think at this point with a rookie quarterback, I'm willing to make that sacrifice, but this
23:12is a tough week to start running to, to, to figure out running the ball.
23:16Titans don't do much.
23:17Well, they do have the personnel to stop the run.
23:19Yep.
23:20Especially if it is Jacoby, like you gotta be able to run the ball because we've seen
23:25Drake definitely able to generate more explosive plays.
23:28You know, Jacoby did have some, uh, in that two minute drive at the end of the game against
23:33the jets.
23:34But as we saw early in the year, there are few and far between with him under center.
23:39So you got to get back to running the ball and they were better running the ball with
23:42Jacoby.
23:43So maybe that alter something in the offensive line, but, uh, yeah, hopefully they can get
23:47back to, uh, the run game there.
23:50So, uh, anything else offensive related, well, we're still kind of iffy on the offensive
23:56line, but Darian Lowe's been a DNP Wednesday limited today as he works back through some
24:01things, uh, Leighton Robinson did return.
24:04So I would imagine if low can't go, it's trade Jacobs back to the left, Michael window at
24:10right tackle Leighton Robinson at right or right guard.
24:14But if low goes, maybe we got, uh, a back to back offensive line combination, which
24:18would be continuing that continuity.
24:20So anything there or just anything else on the offense that you're watching against the
24:24Titans here?
24:25Um, I mean, I just liked that there's some continuity with the offensive line.
24:29I think that makes a difference.
24:30I think you're seeing it.
24:31I think it like, that's where some of this improvement is coming from.
24:33Just guys playing together.
24:34So I know some people might want Leighton Robinson back in the lineup, stick with the
24:39group you have until they give you a reason not to.
24:41That's where I'm at.
24:42Yup.
24:43All right.
24:44Patriots defense against the Titans.
24:47We don't know who Tennessee is playing at quarterback cause will Lavis is still on the
24:51injury report.
24:52He's been limited.
24:53Excuse me with a shoulder injury.
24:56So it's going to be either him or Mason Rudolph.
25:00It doesn't, it shouldn't change much, right?
25:02It was, it doesn't change much for you.
25:04Who's back there at quarterback for the Titans.
25:07Not really.
25:08I'd like to get a wheel.
25:09Levis meme.
25:10It's pretty much as, as, as far as I'll go on that.
25:13That's like Rudolph's probably a little more consistent, you know, a little better underneath
25:20Levis is a little more of a gunslinger.
25:24He'll throw a deep, he'll gift you a turnover or two really bad turnovers.
25:30He'll get meme to death.
25:31So yeah, we'll, we'll see who's under there at there for quarterback, but we talked a
25:38lot just, you know, keep they, they made some progress against the jets.
25:44It still wasn't great against the run.
25:47You know, the tackling was better, but just keep building there.
25:52You imagine whatever quarterback it's in, they're going to want to live with Tajay Spears
25:56and Tony Pollard and the backfield.
25:59So just keep building there.
26:01I kind of like their jets game plan of just kind of, you know, as Devon Godshaw said,
26:06you know, just cut the cute shit out and they got back to the basics, but really it felt
26:10like throughout the whole defense, they just got kind of back to the basics.
26:14Like I just kind of like to see that stop the run.
26:18I'm not too worried about Calvin Ridley.
26:19If you put Christian Gonzalez on them.
26:20So almost just a repeat performance of last week, but you know, you just, you got to continue
26:26that and keep the ball rolling and build on that.
26:29I'll even take it one step further.
26:31Like maybe the biggest departure, big picture from the Belichick defense is they're not
26:36creating turnovers right now.
26:37They're not doing it.
26:38And there's been a lot of moments to call for it, that they're not creating turnovers.
26:44This Titans team trick or treat, right?
26:47Happy Halloween.
26:48They want to give away the football.
26:50That's that's who they are.
26:51And yes, that's the second time today I've used that line.
26:53Uh, I want to see the Patriots come out of this game with multiple turnovers and maybe
26:56these Titans ones will be easy and you're not going to play the Titans every week.
26:59And it's, it's not like, it's not going to be as easy against the bears, but maybe just
27:02getting one kind of jumpstart something.
27:05When's the last time they had a turnover?
27:08Ooh, um, it's been a few weeks, right?
27:13Feels like it's been.
27:15The Houston game.
27:18What even was that?
27:19They didn't get an interception that game, did they?
27:23Was it?
27:24I don't remember.
27:27They say they come in, they say they, it's like a snowball effect with turnovers.
27:31You always hear them say that once you get one, they kind of, yeah, hang on, let me,
27:34this is bugging me now.
27:35And then, cause I remember they had the garbage time interception against the Niners.
27:40Yeah, it was real peppers.
27:43Was it last week or Jacksonville that Jalen Hawkins dropped the interception memory?
27:49He had a hit him like right in the chest last week.
27:52I wanted to say last week.
27:53Yeah.
27:54But what was the turnover against the Texans?
28:00Was it a special teams turn?
28:01There was a, did Stroud throw an interception?
28:06I don't think so.
28:12It's the, it wasn't, they didn't get any pass rush, so it wasn't a strip sack.
28:18This is giving Marcus Jones and intercept Marcus.
28:21Did Marcus Jones pick off?
28:22Oh, it was the, it was the tip, the Mopu tip.
28:25Oh, that's right.
28:27Jones intercepted that.
28:28So that was their last one.
28:30So again, clearly not a ton of turnover.
28:35It's been a while.
28:36Go out, get a turnover, like get this thing going.
28:39A big part of this defense is creating turnovers.
28:41There's always been the identity of this defense.
28:43How many times under Belichick was it?
28:46Yep.
28:47Here comes the turnover.
28:48Like this is where they're going to turn the game.
28:49You could say your watch to it.
28:51That's a, that's supposed to be a big part of their identity defensively is creating
28:54turnovers.
28:55They haven't done it this year, especially not recently.
28:58The Titans are among the worst turnover teams in the league.
29:03Make it count.
29:04The Titans have turned the ball over 16 times.
29:09They are dead.
29:11What's this?
29:12The Titans are dead last in turnovers, offensively and defensively.
29:17They've given the ball away 16 times.
29:19They've only taken it away three.
29:24And I know from our punters league, they have like, they've given up like two block punts
29:28because Ryan Stonehouse is like dead last, even though he's one of the best punters in
29:33the league, he's like, or usually as he's like dead last in our punters league and points
29:38because he keeps getting punts blocked, which we'll talk about their special teams rough
29:42week last week, but yeah, get a turnover again.
29:46That's like, especially if it's a Jacoby Berset game, like you're going to need some plays
29:51on defense, on special teams, like get a turnover that that would go a long way there.
29:57So especially if it's Will Levis probably makes the odds a little more likely.
30:02So that would be big.
30:03You have any, give us a prediction.
30:06Come on.
30:07Who's who's getting the turnover?
30:08If there is one who's getting a turnover, if there is one, like who in the Patriots
30:14force it.
30:15Yeah.
30:16Gonzalez.
30:17Okay.
30:18I was going to say him locks down Calvin Ridley.
30:20Yeah.
30:21So maybe that, I don't know if they have Christian Gonzalez on prize picks, but we'll have to
30:26do that.
30:27So let's take a look.
30:28Yeah.
30:29Turnovers.
30:30We'll, we'll see Titans quarterback, but just, yeah, kind of keep it simple as you did against
30:35the jets.
30:36Get back to the basics.
30:38I would trust the secondary and man like he did against jets Gonzalez on, on Ridley, not
30:43too concerned about their other guys.
30:46So we'll see there.
30:47So anything else on defense or we can lump in special teams.
30:52Cause we kind of talked about that.
30:53They gave up a ton of explosive returns against Detroit last week.
30:59One was a two punt return touchdowns and another lawn return.
31:03So bad special teams unit.
31:07We've seen the Patriots kind of be up and down with, you know, giving up returns, but
31:11Marcus Jones makes some plays.
31:12So anything you're looking at there or anything to wrap up defense.
31:17So I, I, I just on special teams, I just talked to, to Justin Mello covers Patriot covers
31:22Titans for a number of different sources, all of that up later on 98 from the sports
31:25of.com.
31:26And he said that, so the Titans had two punts blocked in the first two weeks and their philosophy
31:34been, well, we're going to leave more guys back to protect the punter so we don't get
31:41it blocked again.
31:42But the problem with that obviously is they're not sending like the full, I guess it's really
31:47ugly, like really ugly.
31:49Well, I just Detroit had a 90 yard punt return, touchdown, 64 yard punt return, and then a
31:5572 yard kickoff return.
31:58So all against the Titans last week.
32:00So that is very ugly.
32:02So there should be a chance to create some plays in the kicking game.
32:06Yup.
32:07Yeah.
32:08Take advantage of it.
32:10Take advantage of it.
32:11And we'll see Jayvon Baker.
32:14Maybe that's where he gets an opportunity.
32:16He's doing return on a punt return.
32:18I think it's still going to be Marcus.
32:20I was saying, cause the lions had a big kick return to kick return.
32:25Yeah.
32:26So maybe you can get something going with him there.
32:29And then Marcus Jones obviously will handle the punter return duty.
32:31So yeah, make a play on defense, make a play on special teams, get something, get something
32:36cooking going on there.
32:37So that's Titans again, one in six, first two and six, not too much to go with there,
32:47but anything else to kind of wrap this one up or we can talk a little trade deadline
32:52and then get into college football and everything else to wrap up the show.
32:56No, I think that's pretty much it on Patriots Titans.
32:59All right.
33:00So before we move on, I got to talk to you guys about game time.
33:05Football season is in full force.
33:07It's also basketball is kicked off.
33:09Hockey is kicked off and we get all of our tickets on the game time app and they have
33:14a new feature called game time picks that makes it getting tickets to see your favorite
33:18teams play live even easier because it filters out the fluff to show you only incredible
33:23deals on great seats.
33:24So you don't have to waste time searching through thousands of tickets.
33:28If you are in Nashville this weekend, uh, great trip.
33:33I'm jealous.
33:34I'm not going, unfortunately, but let's see, $67 is the cheapest.
33:39Get in price on game.
33:40Oh, $64 is the cheapest get in price on game time.
33:44Right now.
33:45You can also upgrade to game time picks and go look at that fifth row corner of the end
33:51zone.
33:52$124 in Nissan stadium to watch the Titans and Patriots play on game time.
33:59So I had to gain time for their lowest price guaranteed and other in app, uh, purchases
34:06and promotions such as seat views on pricing and of course game time picks, which makes
34:11it even easier to save more on sports concerts, comedy theater, and all your tickets.
34:14Take the guesswork out of buying tickets with game time, download the game time app, create
34:18an account and use code C L N S for $20 off.
34:21Your first purchase terms apply again, create an account and redeem code C L N S for $20
34:27off.
34:28Download game time today.
34:29What time is it?
34:30Game time.
34:31All right.
34:33So we did a little trade deadline talk.
34:35Um, it's coming up.
34:37It's November 5th, I believe Tuesday, next Tuesday, Patriots already got started with
34:42Joshua Uche trading him to Kansas city.
34:45But there was also a report from Jocena Anderson the other night that they were monitoring
34:51the trade market for wide receivers, offensive tackles, and defensive tackles as a way to
34:58perhaps add talents.
35:00I don't know if you want to call it buying, but adding some talent.
35:04So is that a move for two and 16, not the most conventional path, but would you be up
35:12for that?
35:13If obviously the deal is right and the player is right and the compensation and everything
35:18were you surprised by that report?
35:21And do you think that's a good way to kind of approach this deadline of maybe if you
35:25find talent, that's worthwhile, go out there and get it.
35:28I mean, I, I think it's a good approach just right.
35:31Especially right now.
35:32Like it's a buyer's market that Deontay Johnson trades insane and I thought the Joshua Uche
35:38return was low.
35:39I still think it's a little low, but you know, when you see what guys are getting traded
35:43for, yeah.
35:44If you can get a player that's going to help you in the longterm, they're not tanking anymore.
35:46Right.
35:47If you can get a player that's going to help you in the longterm, I'm all for it now.
35:50Is that guy out there?
35:52That's a little bit tougher.
35:53Obviously there's the T Higgins of it.
35:54Although the athletic is reported, the Bengals aren't going to trade him.
35:57You know, I was kind of doing some research over the weekend, uh, Barron Browning and
36:01Denver is a guy that's rumored to potentially be moved.
36:04I think the most likely position you're going to get if you do this as edge, you know, a
36:09pass rusher.
36:10So do you go and get Barron Browning chase young could be an option.
36:15Obviously it hasn't worked out for him in new Orleans.
36:16He moved at the deadline last year for a third.
36:19So he's taking a step back.
36:20He's another year older.
36:22I'd probably do a fourth for chase young from the Patriots, uh, assuming that, you know,
36:26you're going to sign him to an extension.
36:29I don't know that like the second for Montez sweat is there, but I like that they're looking.
36:34I like that.
36:35They're looking to add talent consistently.
36:38That's the one that the popular kind of comparison, which was last year, bears were two and six
36:44and they trade a second round pick at the deadline to get Montez sweat.
36:49Uh, I think he's 26, 27.
36:52Then they give them five, you know, a couple of days later, they give them a big four year
36:55extension and now he's here.
36:58He's their, their best pass rusher.
37:00They have a rookie quarterback, they're four and three, they're, you know, in competing
37:04for the playoffs.
37:05That was kind of your comparison, right?
37:07If you're right, like they need talents and if you can, again, you're not, as you said,
37:12you're not tanking, you have the quarterback.
37:14So winning games, isn't a bad thing at this point.
37:17So if you can go out and get talent, that's going to be here for the long haul, even if
37:22they are a UFA and now you have a leg up to resign, these guys work in extension and get
37:28a guy who will be here for the long haul.
37:30I think it's a worthwhile investment, especially, um, not trading the first round pick.
37:36I'm hesitant on trading your second round pick.
37:39Like with the second, it's got to be locked buster.
37:43Yeah.
37:44They had the luxury of having like the two first round picks last year, so they could
37:47kind of do that.
37:48But right.
37:49Uh, would you do like, would it have to be like T Higgins to get you to move that second
37:54round pick or something like that?
37:56Even there, just because it was injury history, like I still might do it, but I have to think
38:00about it.
38:01Um, we're thinking like, surprise, surprise, the name I'm going to bring up DK Metcalf
38:06Seattle has Seattle's in a little bit of a free fall right now falling apart a little
38:10bit.
38:11Yeah.
38:12Somebody, somebody tweeted something the other day about it and somebody tagged me and was
38:15like, it was about like that.
38:18They're just seeing an interesting tweet and was like, if it's DK, if DK ends up a Patriot,
38:23they're like, Alex, Marth is going to look like something, whatever.
38:26Like I, I need it to happen, Brian, I need it to happen.
38:31Not just because not, I mean, one, they get a good player, which would be excellent.
38:35Also just, I, I might have to be done giving takes after that.
38:38Cause I, I I've had this nailed it a year now.
38:41Yeah.
38:42It's him being the guy I was talking to Evan about it.
38:45I remember when people were telling me that Brennan Iuke was better than DK Metcalf.
38:49So Evan's on like the opposite end of the spectrum.
38:53I was talking to him about it last week, I think in the locker room and he was calling
38:56you crazy.
38:57Cause he's like, they're not moving.
38:58He hates fun and DK Metcalf would be fun.
39:00So that's true.
39:02But yeah, the second round pick, I'm, I'm definitely hesitant on moving that too.
39:07Cause you assume that's top 40 pick, but you have two thirds, you have one from the Matthew
39:10Judon trade.
39:11If you could go out and get a guy who, you know, you're confident that'll be here for
39:16a couple of years and can help you win some games.
39:20I'm absolutely for that.
39:22So or maybe even, you know, some of the lesser names, like you have three seventh rounders.
39:29I don't know if you could go yet.
39:32You know, Darius Slayton has been a name that people have thrown out there.
39:35Some of those edge rushers just to get a veteran at a kind of a position, a need to maybe settle
39:39something down.
39:40I would love to just play Jayvon Baker, but if they're hesitant to do that, just, you
39:44know, Darius Slayton could be a guy who just fits the X mold and then slots the other guys
39:48into a better position.
39:49So I'm for adding talent.
39:51They obviously need talent.
39:53Go out and get some, if the opportunity presents itself on the other end of the spectrum, anyone
39:58you think could join Joshua Uche and kind of be shipped out of here.
40:02We know the popular names, KJ Osborne, Taekwon Thornton, Jonathan Jones, Kendrick Bourne,
40:07Devon Godshaw's name has even come up.
40:10Do you think any moves will actually be made to ship anyone out of here by next Tuesday?
40:16I mean, I think you got to move at least one of Osborne or Thornton, if not both.
40:20There's just too many players in that room, too many bodies, too many guys.
40:22You got to get reps and, you know, our guy's going to be disgruntled, not playing one of
40:25those two guys.
40:27That's not great.
40:30You got it.
40:31You just got to open up snaps.
40:32So what, if not both the receivers move, I don't think you're going to see any of the
40:35veterans move.
40:36Um, yeah, I, Uche was the big one, obviously I'm surprised they did as early as they did.
40:41I think maybe if they waited, they could have gotten a little bit more just, you know, teams
40:46going to their second, third option.
40:47But yeah, I, I'd expect one of those receivers to move, if not both of them.
40:52Yep.
40:53I would definitely try to move at least one of them.
40:55I'm not, you know, I've seen a lot of Jonathan Jones, Kendrick Bourne.
41:01I'm not so much in favor of, of trading those guys just because you have such a young team.
41:07You're trying to write this culture, right?
41:09You need some veterans in there.
41:10Now, if someone wants to get crazy and give you a third round pick for one of those guys,
41:16that's when you might have to say, okay, that outweighs the locker room presence.
41:20But you know, you're seeing a six round pick for Jonathan Jones.
41:25I'm good.
41:26I think what he brings to you off the field outweighs a six round pick right now, right?
41:32Somebody's got to get dumb for me to trade one of those guys.
41:35I'm not saying they're untouchable, like third round pick by all means, but the Jonathan
41:41Jones leadership, Kendrick Bourne's leadership worth more than a wait round draft pick.
41:47Yeah.
41:48Especially again, you have three seventh rounders, you trade KJ Osborne or Taekwon, you might
41:54get another six, seventh rounder.
41:56Like how many of these late round picks do you need?
42:00I'm hoping they trade some of them so we don't have to cover six, seven round draft picks,
42:04but those mock drafts get long, Brian, we'll, we'll be able to move all over the board.
42:11And also like, again, it's a buyer's market right now.
42:13So you're not going to get a ton for those guys.
42:16You mentioned all those seventh round picks.
42:17Like that's key.
42:18I would rather move at this point, KJ Osborne into seventh for a six, then just like KJ
42:25Osborne for a seventh or something like that.
42:27I'd be looking at pick swap.
42:28Although I wonder if maybe that's what went into getting the 2026 pick for Joshua Uche,
42:32it was just spread, you know, spread those picks out a little bit.
42:36Yep.
42:37All right.
42:38So that's your trade deadline preview again.
42:40That's not till Tuesday.
42:41So we'll probably talk about it a little bit on Monday again, if there's any updates after
42:47the game.
42:48So we'll, we'll see what happens, but that's Pat's Titans.
42:53That is trade deadline.
42:55I just pulled up prize picks through our lineup.
42:58Unfortunately, I think the quarterback situation is throwing a wrench in everything because
43:03there are no options for lineups right now.
43:07All it is, is Drake may more than pass touchdowns and interceptions.
43:12So we might have to pivot on the lineup.
43:16We'll just tweet it out.
43:17We'll put something together off air and we'll tweet it out on Sunday and let you guys
43:21know to follow the lineup there.
43:23But Oh, this one, Oh no, not this one.
43:28Speaking back to the trades, what are your thoughts on crystal lava?
43:32This is probably an off season move, but are they moving him?
43:36I haven't seen anything about that.
43:38I mean, good player, but there hasn't been any rumors, but like, this is something where
43:44I think he's kind of falls in that, you know, he'll need, it's the fifth year option.
43:48It's the year before the fifth year option.
43:49So we'll need to get paid and the saints are just in such cap hell where maybe they move
43:53him.
43:54I would love, like I was watching the Thursday night game when they were getting blown out
43:59a couple of weeks ago.
44:00And I was like, if you could do almost the DJ more bears, Panthers trade, and this depends
44:06where the draft draft picks fall, but you get crystal lava.
44:09So you maybe move back a couple of picks and get crystal lava.
44:13Like that could be a dream scenario for the Pats this off season, but I don't know.
44:17I just saw that and made me think of that take.
44:19I don't know if you like crystal lava or I do.
44:21I think again, that's more of an off season thing.
44:24Yep.
44:25But interesting idea.
44:26I liked the thought.
44:27I liked the thought.
44:29So we'll wrap up instead of prize picks with our little college football talk.
44:36Let me see.
44:38I was trying to pull up the slate.
44:41Something good this weekend that's on your eye.
44:43I mean, Ohio State, Penn State at noon Saturday is the big one.
44:49Yeah, that's going to be that's going to be a fun smash mouth football game.
44:54Yeah, it's not like the deepest week pit SMU sneaky good game.
45:01It's a big game in the ACC.
45:03That could be fun.
45:07What else we got?
45:08Ole Miss, Arkansas.
45:09You should get some good scoring in that one.
45:12Honestly, Michigan's falling off so much, though.
45:17Yeah.
45:18I mean, I like watching Michigan lose, so that'll be fun.
45:20You got the cocktail party, Florida, Georgia, which it's so they're doing renovations on
45:27the stadium in Jacksonville where so Florida and Georgia every year playing Jacksonville.
45:31It's one of the few like good neutral site games.
45:34I believe most rivalries should be played on campus, but they're doing renovations there.
45:39So for like two years, they can't play the game there.
45:42Logically, you play one game in Gainesville and you play one game in Athens and awesome.
45:46This rivalry goes on campus.
45:48No, they're playing them in freaking Atlanta and Dallas, like when I say Atlanta, I mean
45:53like Mercedes Benz, like the Falcons.
45:55That's annoying.
45:56But cocktail party is always a great environment.
45:58Georgia might blow doors, but watch the first ten minutes.
46:02Beautiful environment.
46:03Fun game.
46:04Yeah, not not not too much exciting now in this one.
46:10So is the I think it's this is the first time and if you like, I feel like the noon window
46:16has been terrible all year.
46:17I think this is the first time all year that like a good game has been at noon.
46:21Yeah, we got the Ohio State, Penn State game at noon.
46:25Northwestern Purdue.
46:26If you're into that sort of thing.
46:28You weren't loving the Notre Dame Navy noon last week.
46:31I actually, I did enjoy that for a little bit, but for the first like ten minutes when
46:37it was somewhat competitive, hey, Notre Dame has more touchdowns of MetLife than the Jets
46:43and Giants combined this year.
46:45So they got that going for them.
46:48Tough, tough one.
46:49But yeah, not a not a great slate, but those are always the ones that that kind of surprise
46:55you and sneak up.
46:56Ohio State, Penn State should be really fun.
46:59So keep an eye on that one.
47:01Any draft takes or have to get off your chest or just college football takes in general
47:05before we log off?
47:07Well, we'll get the first college football playoff rankings on Tuesday.
47:11So I'm I'm hesitant to get big Tuesday, big to write where your trade deadline, college
47:18football playoff.
47:19Is there anything else going on, Brian?
47:20I don't know, but I'm hesitant to get too far ahead of anything.
47:26Because like last year, I was like, oh, I like these teams.
47:28I don't like these teams.
47:29And then there's like a chaos week and then the playoff bracket came out.
47:31So I'm going to bite my tongue for now.
47:34I want to see the playoff.
47:35Because also it's like all irrelevant once we get the bracket.
47:37I like they do the bracket late because it's been a long criticism of the AP poll that
47:41the initial poll, which has more to do with last year than this year, is like flawed.
47:47So I like that.
47:48They wait.
47:49I want to see the bracket and then I'll react because then we really gear up for like this
47:52playoff push.
47:53Yep.
47:55Should be good, should be good, but we will wrap it up there again.
47:59Sorry, we can't do our prize picks live.
48:02We'll tweet out a lineup.
48:04We can, though.
48:05It's been beautiful weather the past few days.
48:08So if you were lucky enough to get out to go play some golf, I'm jealous of you because
48:13we weren't. But when we do go out to play golf, we use our PXG Black Ops irons.
48:19Yes, we do.
48:20Help us hit the ball straighter, farther, not having to worry about hit every shot pure
48:24to make it good.
48:26All of that.
48:27So we head over.
48:28We both Barth and I went over to PXG in Framingham to upgrade the clubs in our bags.
48:34We got to hit on the simulators.
48:37We both decided to go on the Black Ops irons, but they have plenty of new other irons that
48:42you can look at and hit to find the best club that fits your game.
48:46You go through the simulator again, you go through the trackman data, you get your distances.
48:51You get your club speeds, your ball speeds, your club face angles, all of that to help
48:55your golf game take it to the next level.
48:59And so if you want to upgrade your bag with PXG and take your game to a whole new level
49:04for a limited time, you can save ten dollars per club.
49:07If you head over to PXG dot com and use code CLNS, that's PXG dot com code CLNS to save
49:15ten dollars per club on your order.
49:18Again, PXG dot com code CLNS.
49:21I also got an email earlier.
49:22They have a 70 percent off warehouse sale right now, PXG.
49:26So maybe you can go get some, they say clubs, clubs, polos, headwear, bags, gloves, gear,
49:34apparel, accessories and more.
49:36So go get your clubs and then go get some apparel as well on PXG and go play some golf
49:42while we have some nice weather.
49:44So we will wrap it up there.
49:47Again, Patriots at Titans on Sunday.
49:50We'll be back to break it down on Monday.
49:52Talk about maybe a little bit more trade deadline as well.
49:56Hopefully Drake May is out there.
49:58We'll see practice tomorrow.
49:59Gerard Mayo speaks again tomorrow.
50:02So for updates, follow Alex on Twitter at Real Alex Barth.
50:05Head over to 985 Esports Hub dot com for his written coverage.
50:09And you can follow me on Twitter at I am Brian Hines and head over to Pat's Pulpit dot com
50:13for our Patriots coverage there as well.
50:15Thanks everyone for tuning in with us tonight.
50:18Have a happy Halloween and we will see you guys next week.
