00:00The end of 2024 is near, but before anything else, let's know the astronomical events this November 2024.
00:15In Manila, we observed the northern constellations Cassiopeia, Andromeda, and Pisces,
00:22while the constellations that can be seen in the southern sky are Cetus, Phoenix, Sculptor, and Tukana.
00:30The best time to view these constellations this month is at about 9 o'clock PM as they reach their highest point in the sky.
00:38Did you know the name of the fish constellation among the Zojaks?
00:43It is a relatively famed constellation named Pisces.
00:48Its brightest star, Eta Piscei, also known as Alfred or Kulat Nulu, with a magnitude of 3.62, is a massive star approximately 294 light-years from Earth.
01:02It holds some fascinating deep-sky objects including the phantom galaxy M74,
01:09a stunning face-on spiral galaxy that is one of the faintest Pisces objects, and the interacting galaxies NGC 520.
01:18For the planetary locations this month, Mercury will be visible near the western horizon,
01:25while Venus will appear 2 to 3 hours after sunset on the southwestern horizon.
01:31Saturn will be observable in the evening sky until it sets in the western horizon around midnight.
01:37Jupiter and Mars will rise in the eastern horizon as the night deepens.
01:42On November 5, the best time to observe the close pairing of the waxing crescent moon and Venus will be at 6 o'clock PM.
01:50The pair can be seen in the constellation of Euclid and will be observable from sunset until they set on the southwestern horizon at around 7.45 PM.
02:00The waxing gibbous moon and Saturn will also have a close pairing and can be seen around 6 o'clock PM on November 11 over the constellation Aquarius.
02:10Both will be visible from sunset until they set in the western sky at midnight.
02:15On November 15, at 10.37 PM, Saturn will reach the end of its retrograde motion, reversing its course and assuming its usual eastward movement.
02:25All outer planets in the solar system periodically undergo this reversal of direction which occurs a few months after opposition.
02:34The following day at 4.09 PM, Mercury will reach its greatest elongation east or its farthest distance from the Sun.
02:42Also, Mercury will reach its highest point in the evening sky on November 18.
02:47Then, at 8.32 AM on November 21, Mercury will undergo dichotomy and will appear half-illuminated from Earth's perspective.
02:56The moon and Jupiter will have a close approach on November 17 at 9.52 PM.
03:02The two objects will then be in conjunction at 10.53 PM.
03:07Both are located in the constellation Taurus and the exact occurrence of this event will be visible in the eastern sky.
03:15The moon and Mars will share the same right ascension on November 21 at 5.09 AM.
03:21Approximately an hour later, the two celestial bodies will make a close approach.
03:26At this time, the moon and Mars will be positioned against the backdrop of the constellation Cancer.
03:32While the exact conjunction of moon and Mars will be visible in the northwestern sky,
03:37their close approach will unfortunately occur during daylight hours and therefore could be unobservable.
03:44Now, let's proceed to the meteor showers this month.
03:47According to the International Meteor Organization, the Leonid meteor shower is produced by the comet 55P Temel-Tatl.
03:55It is active from November 6 to November 30, with its peak activity occurring on November 17.
04:01The meteor shower is expected to produce 15 meteors per hour and will be active once Regent Leo rises in the northeastern sky
04:10before midnight and continues before sunrise on November 18.
04:15The number of visible meteors increases as the regent ascends to its highest point in the sky at around 5 o'clock AM.
04:22As the shower reaches its peak, the moon in Sagittarius will be around the first quarter phase, presenting minimal interference.
04:30Meteor showers can be seen with the naked eye, so no special tools are needed.
04:35Choose a dark location away from city lights on a clear night with no moon to enhance the viewing experience.
04:41And so, these are the astronomical events to look forward to this November 2024.
