On this episode of Still Poddable, Sam "Jam" Packard, Brian Robb and producer Sean Gauthier break down an eventful weekend for the Celtics in Charlotte, Jaylen's injury and much more before hitting some new weekly segments.

00:01:39Now some of you guys might be asking
00:01:41J.M. why are you in a cowboy hat?
00:01:43And why do you have a terrible handlebar mustache?
00:01:46And the answer is
00:01:48I went to a Halloween party last night
00:01:50And yes, it's November
00:01:52And so should there have been a Halloween party?
00:01:55Probably not
00:01:56Was it also a joint birthday party?
00:01:57Sure
00:01:58That's all I really got
00:02:00The problem was I went to this party
00:02:03And I had this terrible facial hair
00:02:05For those listening
00:02:06I have just an awful, awful handlebar mustache
00:02:09Into chinstrap
00:02:11But I was meeting a lot of new people
00:02:13Who just didn't know that it was like a visual goof
00:02:16So they just all assumed that this was like my normal go-to look
00:02:20It was a bad night
00:02:21I had to do a lot of explaining
00:02:23The visual goof didn't work
00:02:24It was a tough situation
00:02:25What was it?
00:02:26What was the visual goof?
00:02:27This looks ridiculous, B-Rob!
00:02:29What are you doing with a visual goof?
00:02:30Was it part of the costume?
00:02:31Were you like...
00:02:32I was a cowboy
00:02:33I had like a...
00:02:34You know, obviously this hat
00:02:36Got this little bolo tie going on
00:02:38Had some boots
00:02:40A big old belt
00:02:41It was a pretty low-effort costume
00:02:43But mostly it was just the facial hair
00:02:46And then I had a number of people ask
00:02:48A number of people ask me
00:02:49Is that your normal facial hair?
00:02:53The visual goof didn't work
00:02:55And how long are you planning on keeping this facial hair?
00:02:59Oh, it is being shaved immediately
00:03:01After the recording of this podcast
00:03:03I think you ought to work off that, actually
00:03:05I think that's a new job
00:03:06That's what people are going to want to see in there
00:03:08I only kept it for this discussion of it
00:03:10And then it will be quickly shaven after the podcast
00:03:13But, sorry to Dilly and or Dally
00:03:15We are here to talk about the Boston Celtics
00:03:17The week that was in the Boston Celtics
00:03:19Let's just do a bit of a recap
00:03:21Big win over the Milwaukee Bucs at home
00:03:24Then a thrilling...
00:03:26Is it now, though? Is it, though?
00:03:28I don't know
00:03:29The lowly Bucs?
00:03:30We'll get to the Bucs
00:03:31The Bucs played the top-of-the-league Cavs
00:03:33Pretty well last night
00:03:34So maybe we'll evaluate that Bucs win
00:03:38Then they had the big comeback against the Pacers
00:03:40But the Celtics got their first loss of the year
00:03:43In overtime in Indiana
00:03:46And then, just the vicious Hornets
00:03:50Invite the Celtics to town for two games
00:03:53Friday night and Saturday night
00:03:55A back-to-back
00:03:56A rare home-and-home...
00:03:57Not even home-and-home
00:03:59Just back-to-back in the same city
00:04:01Baseball series
00:04:04And we got some just...
00:04:06I wouldn't call them fisticuffs
00:04:08But some strong feelings
00:04:10After Grant Williams violently
00:04:13violently body-checks Jason Tatum
00:04:16But the Celtics...
00:04:18There's actually two kind of closer games
00:04:20Than I would have anticipated against the Hornets
00:04:22But they found a way to pull them out
00:04:24In the end, kind of comfortably winning both games
00:04:26Celtics are 3-1
00:04:28Start the year 6-1
00:04:32B-Rob, what's the biggest takeaway
00:04:35Coming off this week in Celtics?
00:04:38It's Grant Williams
00:04:40And the goodwill he has in the city of Boston
00:04:43Going forward
00:04:45It's... I don't know
00:04:47Grant...
00:04:49Part of me feels for Grant
00:04:51The whole... both teams that went to the finals
00:04:53Trading you in one season
00:04:55You know, that's tough
00:04:57Seems he's a good guy
00:04:59Me and you, Pat, we played guitar with Grant at one point
00:05:02He's a nice, fun nerd
00:05:04With that said here
00:05:06The lack of accountability after the fact
00:05:09From Grant Williams publicly
00:05:11Is so dumb
00:05:13Like, this would be nothing
00:05:15If he just said
00:05:17You know what, my bad, I got into it
00:05:19I came at Tatum too hard
00:05:21Which he has a track record of doing
00:05:23Not with Tatum, but with other guys
00:05:25That's one thing, if he owned it
00:05:27Then it's like, alright, it happened
00:05:29Move on, now you can laugh
00:05:31But now, the fact he was like
00:05:33Totally being like, no one came at me after the fact
00:05:35It just makes him look so much worse
00:05:38And now it's
00:05:40You see Tatum walking off the floor
00:05:42Not greeting him after the game
00:05:44On Saturday night, which I think speaks volumes
00:05:46It's also very awkward
00:05:48With the pre-game interviews of Grant
00:05:51Where he's being friendly with the Celtics media
00:05:53He's like, yeah, I'm gonna have these guys over for wings afterward
00:05:56We're just gonna hang out
00:05:58And we're great friends
00:06:00Well then maybe don't body check Jason Tatum
00:06:02In the middle of the game
00:06:04And I think
00:06:06Initially I watched it back a couple times
00:06:08No one really reacted to
00:06:10At least the broadcast didn't
00:06:12And then as soon as you see the replay
00:06:14Where it's just like, it is like a safety
00:06:16Or like a linebacker covering over the middle
00:06:18And he just basically takes out the body of Jason Tatum
00:06:20I think, I agree with you B-Rob
00:06:22That it's the lack of accountability
00:06:24Grant Williams has a history of
00:06:26Doing stuff on the court
00:06:28That he probably shouldn't have
00:06:30Whether it was the, I'm gonna make them both
00:06:32Against Donovan Mitchell and the Cavs
00:06:34Or it was the getting in the face
00:06:36Of Jimmy Butler during the playoff series
00:06:38I think that was game two
00:06:40And having that go horribly wrong
00:06:42Yeah, it just
00:06:44Afterwards
00:06:46Especially, I think he did the interview with
00:06:48Kayla Burton of NBC Sports
00:06:50Boston wearing a beret
00:06:52And this is coming from a guy with a dumb facial hair
00:06:54And a cowboy hat
00:06:56And a ridiculous denim vest
00:06:58Like it doesn't help your
00:07:00It doesn't help your cause when you say dumb things
00:07:02But wearing a dumb outfit is all I'll say
00:07:04Yeah, it's
00:07:06It was a tough look
00:07:08And he has a history now
00:07:10Of hard fouls against the Celtics
00:07:12Like he, in that game in Dallas last year
00:07:14He had a really hard foul on Jalen Brown
00:07:16That pissed Jalen off
00:07:18And Jalen, to his credit, was the first guy
00:07:20Really going after him after this
00:07:22Situation with Tatum
00:07:24And then when you even have Derek White
00:07:26Like the nicest man in NBA history
00:07:28That was the shocking part
00:07:30And then Derek saying
00:07:32After Friday Night, like, what are you doing, Grant?
00:07:34When you lose Derek White
00:07:36You lose the room
00:07:38And that is, I think, what's happened now
00:07:40And I don't know, time heals all wounds
00:07:42I'm sure they'll eventually be fine
00:07:44But it's just not
00:07:46For Grant, I don't know
00:07:48Is he mad about the lack of a tribute video there?
00:07:50Like, you know, we saw that
00:07:52Do you guys see the Draymond rant on Twitter?
00:07:54After the fact over the weekend?
00:07:56I mean, it's Draymond
00:07:58But there is
00:08:00Draymond and Tatum are tight, so I don't know
00:08:02It's just rich for Draymond
00:08:04To lecture anyone about being overly violent
00:08:06It's like, you choked Rudy Gobert
00:08:08And you punched your own teammate
00:08:10And for you then to criticize Grant for that
00:08:12Seems like, maybe it's the right message
00:08:14But wrong messenger
00:08:16Draymond was like, if you're gonna be violent
00:08:18It's supposed to be your own young teammate
00:08:20You're supposed to destroy the team
00:08:22Yeah, you're supposed to ruin the vibe
00:08:24For the entire season
00:08:26That's a unifying thing for the Celtics
00:08:30They certainly handled business on the court
00:08:32And two
00:08:34I would say fairly comfortable games
00:08:36In which, I think the Hornets are a better
00:08:38Or more talented team than we've seen in past years
00:08:40But I thought the Celtics
00:08:42Played pretty solid basketball
00:08:44In both regards
00:08:46And were able to win easily, pull away in the end

00:10:32What did you think?
00:10:34Especially in that Saturday night
00:10:36He just did what he was supposed to do
00:10:38Didn't try to play for me
00:10:40He did get the nice dunk
00:10:42And kind of landed on Grant after the fact
00:10:44That was a nice little subtle move
00:10:46What did you think about how he handled the situation?
00:10:48J. King was down there
00:10:50And asked Tatum good questions
00:10:52On Saturday night after the fact
00:10:54And Tatum just pretty much sidestepped him
00:10:56Saying I don't want to talk about it at all
00:10:58And then
00:11:00It wasn't a fuel for him
00:11:02The fact that Grant did this on Friday night
00:11:04Do you guys like that from Tatum's standpoint?
00:11:06Or would you rather be like
00:11:08Just have him mouth off about it?
00:11:10I like it
00:11:12Because it feels authentic to Jason Tatum
00:11:14When have we ever seen Jason Tatum
00:11:16Be a very demonstrative
00:11:18Extremely in your face
00:11:20Especially with other opponents
00:11:22The most upset I think we see Jason Tatum
00:11:24Is when he slams the ball
00:11:26When he's upset about referees
00:11:28But he's never really been an in your face guy
00:11:30In terms of other people on his team
00:11:32I think Grant
00:11:34To give any reaction to Grant
00:11:36Would be to give Grant exactly what he wanted
00:11:38And so I feel like it's very much
00:11:40It feels like Tatum
00:11:42When he gets a hard foul
00:11:44His go to move is pop up as quickly as possible
00:11:46And he did that here
00:11:48And so I feel like that was just
00:11:50Authentic to him
00:11:52That's what he does
00:11:54And so a good response
00:11:56Not letting him be fazed by it whatsoever
00:11:58I would have been shocked
00:12:00If he got up
00:12:02I would have been shocked if he punched Grant in the face
00:12:04Even if he just got up and got in Grant's face
00:12:06After that
00:12:08That's just not what I see
00:12:10Yeah and it also
00:12:12Brings back to Joe's comments
00:12:14After the first game
00:12:16Just talking about
00:12:18Tatum got back up
00:12:20Didn't milk it
00:12:22Went straight to the line
00:12:24And everyone had their own reaction
00:12:26That's just Tatum
00:12:28He's just like great I'm going to keep playing basketball now
00:12:30Thank you for the free throws
00:12:32Just kind of moves on
00:12:34For him not to
00:12:36Totally acknowledge it at all
00:12:38And then the air
00:12:40After the game even on Saturday night
00:12:4224 hours later
00:12:44On top of obviously not greeting him
00:12:46Most Celtics just not greeting Grant on the court after the fact
00:12:48I think honestly
00:12:50That's a win for Tatum
00:12:52Because he's being true to himself
00:12:54And I think he just wants this behind him
00:12:56Period
00:12:58He doesn't want this to linger
00:13:00And if he talked about it more
00:13:02Then it could obviously extend it even longer
00:13:04It's so far beneath him
00:13:06Don't let Grant Williams
00:13:08And I again
00:13:10I've been a big Grant Williams fan ever since
00:13:12With the Celtics
00:13:14Never going to forget this
00:13:16Game 7 against the Bucs
00:13:18He was nice enough to play
00:13:20Very nerdy man
00:13:22Played Catan with me and B-Rob
00:13:24It's Tom Foolery and Ballyhoo
00:13:26Of the negative variety
00:13:28That I can't get behind
00:13:30And Tatum made him pay on the court
00:13:32He lived at the free throw line
00:13:3417 attempts
00:13:36On Friday night
00:13:3817 attempts on Saturday night
00:13:40That was kind of helped out by Charles Lee
00:13:42Deciding to foul
00:13:44Many many times down the stretch
00:13:46Maybe it was a protest foul
00:13:48Because the Hornets
00:13:50I can't say LaMelo Ball
00:13:52Plays the most disciplined of defense
00:13:54He's certainly
00:13:56An extremely talented player on the offensive end
00:13:58And
00:14:00The Celtics didn't do
00:14:02He certainly
00:14:04Had some flashes, had some great moments there
00:14:06I think Friday night
00:14:08He had a much better game than Saturday night
00:14:10But scored 30 in both of them
00:14:12B-Rob
00:14:14What did you think about just like the Celtics
00:14:16Ability to slow down
00:14:18Guys like LaMelo
00:14:20They also felt like they had some tough
00:14:22Slowing down fast guard
00:14:24Like Tyrese Halliburton
00:14:26Against the Pacers
00:14:28I know we talked
00:14:30After that Pacers game
00:14:32Drew
00:14:34Is not necessarily
00:14:36He's known as this amazing defender
00:14:38And he is an amazing defender
00:14:40But he's not necessarily the quick guard
00:14:42Defensive person
00:14:44And I think down the stretch in that Pacers game
00:14:46We saw Peyton Pritchard get the assignment
00:14:48To guard those fast guys
00:14:50We saw a lot of Peyton Pritchard
00:14:52Down the stretch of this game
00:14:54What do you think about the Celtics
00:14:56Defensive approach to
00:14:58Yeah I mean that's
00:15:00I think over the years that's been
00:15:02Just one of the team's weak spots
00:15:04They don't have many
00:15:06Many of them
00:15:08But you're right like Drew Holiday
00:15:10His strength is the versatility
00:15:12And being able to guard up
00:15:14But as he gets later in his 30s
00:15:16I think we're going to see more and more
00:15:18Like those assignments are going to go to Derek White
00:15:20Or Peyton Pritchard
00:15:22But yeah with LaMelo I thought they did a good job
00:15:24I mean this was kind of like business like
00:15:26The Celtics and Charlotte
00:15:28Coming out
00:15:30The Hornets made a lot of threes
00:15:32Especially on that Friday night
00:15:34But the Celtics withstood that
00:15:36And then Saturday night came out
00:15:38With more defensive mentality
00:15:40They shot like shit in the second half of that game
00:15:42On Saturday night
00:15:44And still were able to get it done
00:15:46It's the Hornets
00:15:48We're not going to throw a parade for them here
00:15:50But it's still
00:15:52Without Jaylen Brown those games
00:15:54You're 6-1
00:15:56You haven't lost a bad game yet
00:15:58And so there's something to be said for that
00:16:00I think that what
00:16:02It highlights to me is
00:16:04Just how important
00:16:06Peyton Pritchard is to this team
00:16:08He's playing phenomenal basketball
00:16:10But if you just look at his stats
00:16:12He's averaging close to 30 minutes a game
00:16:14At this point
00:16:16He is definitely
00:16:18He's averaging 28 minutes a game
00:16:20But he's playing a substantive amount
00:16:22I think that certainly
00:16:24Was increased on Saturday night
00:16:26With the Jaylen Brown injury
00:16:28But it's not just the offensive production
00:16:30From Pritchard
00:16:32Which has been absolutely phenomenal
00:16:34He knocked down another six threes on Saturday night
00:16:36After bouncing back from an offer
00:16:38On Friday
00:16:40That was Peyton Pritchard
00:16:42But he has now been updated
00:16:44Vegas has responded
00:16:46To this hot start from Peyton Pritchard
00:16:48He is now the leader in the clubhouse
00:16:50For sixth man of the year
00:16:52And
00:16:54I didn't necessarily see that coming
00:16:56I did say that two games into the season
00:16:58I was willing to be
00:17:00Very early on that bandwagon
00:17:02But for the rest of the league to take notice
00:17:04It's not just the three point shooting
00:17:06He made a number of plays off the dribble
00:17:08Probing, getting to the rim
00:17:10Scoring some points there
00:17:12He's a starter caliber player
00:17:14In the NBA at this point
00:17:16And it just feels like such a luxury
00:17:18On such a talented Celtics team
00:17:20That has
00:17:22Four or five
00:17:24Six stars
00:17:26Depending if Chris Adams is healthy
00:17:28To have this guy be your sixth man
00:17:30Is like ridiculous
00:17:32And to get him at the contract that he's at
00:17:34It's just
00:17:36It's just kind of absurd
00:17:38It's a wealth
00:17:40Absurdity of wealth
00:17:42There's some sort of term I'm looking for
00:17:44That people would use
00:17:46There it is
00:17:48God
00:17:50Brought it home
00:17:52Absurdity of wealth
00:17:54Talk amongst yourselves
00:17:56First of all
00:17:58I'm adding some sound effects on here
00:18:00If I could have just tapped a little applause thing
00:18:02I'll get on that
00:18:04That was well done
00:18:06I just had my friend
00:18:08Joe
00:18:10Who texted me
00:18:12Before the Patriots game
00:18:14I think he's

00:32:42The other end of the spectrum
00:32:44I'll give you guys the choice. Which embarrassing
00:32:46Eastern conference franchise would you like to discuss
00:32:48first? The Milwaukee Bucs, or
00:32:50my hometown, Philadelphia
00:32:5276ers?
00:32:54Well you've got cowboy boots on the ground
00:32:56there, I imagine.
00:32:58Well last night
00:33:00the Tweets were flying in at the party
00:33:02What was the Philly buyout
00:33:04at the party? The first report was that
00:33:08Embiid used a trident against a reporter
00:33:10her in the locker room, you know? And then it like quickly
00:33:14came out that no, he just punched him. Then that tweet
00:33:17was quickly deleted. No, it was just a shove, just a casual
00:33:21shove, just a casual shove in the locker room. Then we learned
00:33:26who the reporter was. And everyone, all the Philly fans
00:33:28were like, that guy sucks. That guy is like the one of the
00:33:32biggest trolls in the market for 30 years now. He wrote an
00:33:37article basically questioning Joel Embiid's like desire to
00:33:41play basketball, you know, like for having missed the start of
00:33:46the season and doing this ramp up. And as the Philly fans
00:33:49around me pointed out, like, Joel played with like a broken
00:33:52face and Bell's palsy. And like, the question has never like
00:33:56been Joel Embiid's desire to play basketball because clearly
00:34:01he's played hurt a number of times. The problem was the guy
00:34:05wrote that article with the lead to the story being like, this
00:34:08sets a poor example for your dead brother you're trying to
00:34:12honor and the son you named him afterwards. And it was so
00:34:15egregious that like that was in the like that made the print
00:34:18version of the Enquirer. But then like everyone was like, you
00:34:21didn't need to say that like and then they got taken out. And
00:34:24Bede said I've done too much for the city on Friday. And then we
00:34:28got a shoving match in the locker room on Saturday. I will
00:34:32say, if you're seven feet tall, over 300 pounds, you probably
00:34:38shouldn't be putting your hands on anyone. Because I've been in
00:34:42these locker rooms. B Rob, you've been in these locker
00:34:45rooms. The players are much bigger than us. Any sort of
00:34:51interpersonal violence. There's no way that ends. Well, that's
00:34:56all I'm saying. It's not a not a positive decision tree to go
00:34:59down that route. I understand his frustration with that
00:35:01specific columnist. But you probably shouldn't put your
00:35:05hands on a journalist or anyone really in front of everyone in
00:35:09the locker room. Yeah, all the other work. Well, here's a
00:35:12question now. Does the NBA clearly there can be action
00:35:16taken? Do they investigation number two? We're six games.
00:35:21Yeah, not not great for the Sixers who, again, they're they
00:35:24lost at home to the Grizzlies. They're what one and they're one
00:35:27and four now. Paul George may or may not be returning soon. But
00:35:30does the NBA be like, Listen, we're gonna find you like, mid
00:35:34six figures like a hefty fine and suspend you? Or do they say
00:35:38like, if they suspend him, they're just helping him with
00:35:41his ramp up process. Wait,
00:35:45that's a good point Packard. So they haven't out there. Or do
00:35:48they reverse suspension? They're like, you have to play this.
00:35:52Yes, like you have to play the night. See what it looks like.
00:35:55And then without a bag, or does the NBA just be like, look at
00:35:58the column that this guy wrote being like, well, you know what?
00:36:01We're just gonna find you. We're not gonna spend your time
00:36:03because that guy, you know, he probably had to come in a little
00:36:05bit to, to bring up your dead brother and your son for
00:36:10something like that. Yeah, I'm not. It's listen, NBA needs to
00:36:15be smart and putting your hands on it. Like just common sense
00:36:17101. I know you're heated like, like this has been out there for
00:36:20a few days, like, just like, mouth off at him, but you can't
00:36:25like be smart about it. Yeah, it's like, unfortunately, for
00:36:30six years, I think it's down in the priority list of like,
00:36:32what's wrong with this team right now? Because it's like, it
00:36:34looks, it just looks like this. The pieces that Maury assembled
00:36:39to put around these guys, even when they do come back, like,
00:36:42they're gonna turn from a one and four team to like, back to
00:36:46a contender. I don't know if you have everyone else in the team
00:36:49outside of Maxi who is can't hit threes anymore, like going
00:36:52looking like replacement level players.
00:36:55I maybe it's I've been to Philadelphia pilled. I've just
00:36:59been mean too many hoagies. But I do think adding Paul George
00:37:04and Joel and be to the lineup will be helpful for the on court
00:37:07product. And maybe this is just like the exact type of
00:37:12adversity they need to galvanize the team. It's us against the
00:37:15world. They take turns assaulting a different member of
00:37:18the journalism staff before or after every game. It's always
00:37:24interesting to me because like, growing up in Boston sports talk
00:37:27radio, and be Rob, I'm sure you've heard this a lot. It's
00:37:29like, well, if you're going to say that on the radio, you got
00:37:31to be in the locker room and be accountable to the players.
00:37:35Never did people think that means like, well, you got a fist
00:37:38fight the players after the game, when you say things, but
00:37:41when you say it's like kind of slanderous stuff, me, I guess
00:37:46credit the guy for for showing up in the locker room. But also
00:37:51the initial reporting of it, like he was like someone sick
00:37:54unnamed Sixers reporter said he was punched and then deleted
00:37:57that tweet within like two minutes. So I'm just imagining
00:38:00the Sixers PR team was like, wanna get that he was not
00:38:04because you got to delete that tweet immediately like what are
00:38:06you doing? And apparently that reporter wasn't even in the
00:38:09locker room. He was just doing secondhand news about reporting
00:38:13on it. And so I trust Sixers, Adam, he's writes for the Philly
00:38:16voice. He was in there, he gave his eyewitness account. Although
00:38:20we should all be suspect of eyewitness testimony. It's very
00:38:23flawed. That's a courtroom aside there. But it sounds like he
00:38:29just put his hand on his shoulder. He stumbled back a
00:38:32bit. It wasn't like the dramatic act of assault, as was initially
00:38:36described, but things are not going well in Philadelphia. It's
00:38:40not always sunny. It's it's foggy at best with the rain
00:38:46clouds swirling.
00:38:49And yet they have a better record than the Bucs.
00:38:52Yes, they have a better record than the Milwaukee Bucs. See,
00:38:55here's the thing. I feel like the 76ers have this built in
00:39:00excuse that we don't have Joel Embiid. We don't have Paul
00:39:04George. We haven't been able to put our best foot forward. What
00:39:09excuse do the Bucs have? Because the Bucs have had Giannis and
00:39:13Dame there for every game. And both those guys have kind of
00:39:18been bawling, like putting up more than 30 points a game and
00:39:22it just hasn't mattered because they cannot play defense
00:39:26whatsoever. That being said, they played the Cavs lost on a
00:39:31Donovan Mitchell buzzer beater. So they like played a close game
00:39:34against the Cavs, who are apparently the best team in the
00:39:37Eastern Conference starting the season 7-0. And so maybe that
00:39:41there's some hope there for the Bucs. But if you just look at
00:39:45the roster, I don't know what they're they don't have a Joel
00:39:50Embiid coming back. They don't have a Paul George coming back.
00:39:52They just have to keep trying to figure this out with a guy. And
00:39:55is Chris Middleton like really the answer to everything? I
00:40:00guess it means maybe if you don't have to play Gary Trent
00:40:02Jr. and Torian Prince 40 minutes a game, but you still got to
00:40:06play one of those guys serious minutes. And so I, I was wrong
00:40:11hand up. I was wrong. I was kind of a I thought people were
00:40:13really overly negative on the Bucs going into the year because
00:40:16I kind of believe that Giannis and Dame would put it together.
00:40:20We heard all this propaganda about how Dame was in the best
00:40:23shape of his life. I thought that would maybe do something
00:40:25but it turns out you still need to play defense in the NBA.
00:40:29Yeah, I mean, Dame, it's he can score now but we know defense is
00:40:35what it is has been for his entire career. Now he's going
00:40:37into his thirties. It's just going to get worse and worse in
00:40:39a hurry for him there. But the biggest thing now it's like all
00:40:43their role players have just fallen off a cliff. Like Bobby
00:40:47Portis and Pat Connaughton, like Connaughton used to be a pain in
00:40:50the ass. And now he's just like getting played off the floor
00:40:54like night after night. Like he can't stop anyone like that. And
00:40:57you blame I think you blame the GM for just terrible roster and
00:41:01like not seeing this coming not seeing a bunch of aging guys
00:41:03like not trying to address this like trading away your best
00:41:07offensive player for game alert and not having a good backup
00:41:12plan in place for it. But now I don't know what they do here
00:41:15guy because it's they've used all their draft capital already
00:41:18on all these deals over the years. And Chris Middleton is
00:41:22coming back. But that's what that's gonna get them back to
00:41:26like 500. Like you're you're going into such a big hole so
00:41:29early in the season right now. I don't and no one's gonna want
00:41:32these players like roleplay like the trades that they could
00:41:35have they could have traded them last season when they still had
00:41:37some value. Now these guys like who wants them now? No one. And
00:41:40so that now you're kind of stuck.
00:41:43I mean, you've also got Giannis teasing a trade for himself. I
00:41:48don't know if you have seen these quotes from him. But he's
00:41:50like, like he started the season being like, and you never know
00:41:52if this doesn't go well, I could get traded. Maybe that's their
00:41:56issue is
00:41:56that's such a humble way to make a trade request. Yeah. Like, who
00:42:00knows? They could trade me.
00:42:05The guy that made the day Miller trade for it. So I said this
00:42:07week, they're gonna they're gonna move me before they have
00:42:09to. Yeah. Yeah. But it's it sets them up well to play that card
00:42:14here. And I they won't do that this season. Like all these
00:42:18rumors are kind of like, there's 0.0% chance that Giannis gets
00:42:20moved during this year. But in the summer, all that's like if
00:42:26it if they completely flame out, all bets are off.
00:42:31Um, so good news. So I think generally for the Celtics, if
00:42:34you're looking at their Eastern Conference rivals, the Knicks
00:42:37not playing that well, I guess we don't have to talk about the
00:42:39Cavs. But the Cavs are looking to be the biggest competition
00:42:43for the Celtics in the east. The Celtics already what a half a
00:42:46full game back. This would have never happened last year when we
00:42:50won the conference by 14 games. And so you can't lose to the
00:42:53Pacers Celtics. It's just it's, you know, it's too bad, but
00:42:56we're gonna have to play better. But looking forward to that
00:42:59first calf game. Unless you guys got anything else. I think
00:43:03it's time for segments. Hell yeah. Do we want stats now? Or
00:43:06you want stats and segments? Stats will be a segment. There
00:43:09we go. Let's go beautiful. Let's first start off with moment of
00:43:12the week. For the audio listeners, you have to imagine
00:43:19us going moment of the week over that sweet music. I'm taking
00:43:23nominations now for a moment of the week we have. This is on the
00:43:29spreadsheet. J King also did not add anything to it, despite
00:43:33ample opportunity. So we'll see that. I'm traveling back to the
00:43:39Monday game. Derek White's block on Giannis, I thought was pretty
00:43:43cool. Then we had a Joe Missoula is very furious tech. Actually
00:43:49had two texts this week, but one was a furious tech. We had to be
00:43:53held back by multiple assistant coaches. We have the Mimi's dunk
00:43:58on miles bridges towards the end of that game on Friday night. All
00:44:03good nominations. I don't know. We just made up moment of the
00:44:06week last week. So there's clearly no rules of recipe, a
00:44:09positive moment or a negative. But I think the thing that's
00:44:11going to stick out for this week is Grant Williams truck sticky.
00:44:16Jason Tatum, like I don't know. Like, there's really nothing
00:44:20that can top that.
00:44:23If they want to come back against the Pacers, I think that
00:44:25like maybe taping the three to force over again, but that kind
00:44:28of gets lost now since they lost in overtime. But yeah, the story
00:44:31of this week is, is Grant running his future business
00:44:35endeavors in Boston.
00:44:37And I'm going to give a little sub moment of the week to Derek
00:44:41White shoving Grant in retaliation because that was
00:44:44shocking. And I didn't necessarily think that was going
00:44:47to happen. And so congrats to Grant Williams. The only thing
00:44:51he won this week was the still potable free episode moment of
00:44:55the week. Moving on to segment two. Shit, Joe says this is
00:45:05where we break down the craziest things that Joe Missoula has
00:45:08said this week and boy do we have a doozy. Now maybe we've
00:45:14talked about it. We got to talk about it again. Joe Missoula was
00:45:17on the 98.5 the Sports Hub in his weekly appearance with
00:45:22Zolak and Bertrand. Nice, nice assist there. 98.5 Sports Hub
00:45:28employee. And he was asked about what he wanted to change about
00:45:31the game. And first, he brought up a power play situation, which
00:45:35is just has gotten completely overwhelmed because the second
00:45:39part of his quote was just got a little bit crazier. But I think
00:45:42we deserve to focus on what if he was just like, yeah, what if
00:45:45we just have three second power plays? And I think that would be
00:45:48fascinating. Because like what imagine the crazy plays that NBA
00:45:52coaches would drop, knowing that they had a 5-4 advantage, but it
00:45:56was like a very quick 5-4 advantage, where you have this
00:45:59guy sprinting back into the play. I love that idea. And I
00:46:03don't think people are talking enough about like, sure, if that
00:46:07happened on a take foul, and you don't like what I thought that
00:46:10was genius. I thought it'd be like very, I think it'd be a
00:46:13very exciting play. And just like a whole nother facet of the
00:46:16game is like, oh, how is this team's power play? Who's the
00:46:19best at drawing up the power play? Like it brings up all this
00:46:22kind of hockey conversation of like, oh, who's the who's the
00:46:26best penalty kill situation? Like what defenses can you play
00:46:30for that? It just creates this whole new strategic element that
00:46:32I wasn't prepared for. And I did want to highlight that because I
00:46:35think it got lost. Because then Joe Mazula was advocating
00:46:38violence in the second part of this quote.
00:46:41No, it's a good point. And like three seconds is so much longer
00:46:44in basketball than I feel like we we give it credit for. But
00:46:48like, you know, you very rarely see a three second, like paint
00:46:52violation called. And I feel like part of that is because no
00:46:54one cares. But part of it's because it doesn't actually
00:46:55happen that much. And like three seconds is a lot of time off of
00:46:59like an inbound. Yeah, it could make for some exciting stuff.
00:47:03During the G League, just like doing the G League All Star
00:47:07game do something like I just want to see this in action now.
00:47:09Because the chaos it could form like to your point, Packard
00:47:12would be phenomenal. And it's, it's never gonna we're never
00:47:16gonna really see it. But it certainly could spice things up
00:47:20in less than a not not the top level here.
00:47:25Speaking of spicing things up, unprompted. So he was just asked
00:47:28about rule changes. And Joe says, quote, the biggest thing
00:47:31that we rob people of from an entertainment standpoint is he
00:47:34can't fight anymore. I wish we'd bring back fighting.
00:47:37What's more entertaining than a little scuffle? How come in
00:47:40baseball, they're allowed to clear the benches? How come in
00:47:41hockey, they're allowed to fight? I don't understand. I
00:47:44just don't get why some sports are allowed to clear the
00:47:46benches. They have bats and weapons in baseball. We don't
00:47:49we have a ball. The other sport hockey is one of the hardest
00:47:51playing surfaces and a puck and a stick. And yet we're not
00:47:54allowed to throw down a little bit. Now I've heard some people
00:47:59be like, Hey, Joe Missoula. Do you remember the malice in the
00:48:03palace? And I think that is a bad thing to say. Because the
00:48:08problem with the malice of the palace wasn't the fighting
00:48:10amongst the players. It was the fighting amongst the players
00:48:14against the fans. If you keep the combat to the hardwood,
00:48:19that's what people love that. And apparently that would like
00:48:22people hate three pointers. They love watching like the Knicks
00:48:25and he beat the shit out of each other with Jeff Van Gutty
00:48:28hanging on Alonzo morning's leg. So maybe he's onto something
00:48:31here. I just think we will file this under the least surprising
00:48:35quote from Joe Missoula we've ever heard.
00:48:38Yeah, I was also I was listening to Grandy and Max, I caught the
00:48:43the Saturday night game on the radio first, I was like coming
00:48:46home and Joe goes on that show before every game. And in that
00:48:51interview, he kind of clarified a bit too. He was like, it
00:48:54sounds like basically what he's talking about is that like when
00:48:57you when you over police the game in his words, I'm pretty
00:49:01sure like, with with the technical fouls and the
00:49:05flagrance, he was like, you kind of let people get away with
00:49:09shit in a way that they wouldn't, if I could just hit
00:49:13you in the face for it. Like it like if there's like a crazy
00:49:17hard foul, like that guy knows he's gonna get hard fouled.
00:49:20Whereas
00:49:21interesting in the context of the grant of the grant truck
00:49:24stick. Basically, he's like, yeah, a flagrant who wasn't
00:49:27enough for grant, we should have been able to punch him in the
00:49:30face. And then he would never have done it again.
00:49:32Yeah. And like, also, you kind of, I don't know, in my head,
00:49:35like you ease the tension a bit, right? Like if grant gets run
00:49:37over on the next play, well, it's done. Now grant ran over
00:49:41Tatum. Now grant got ran over and we're good. It's like
00:49:44hitting a it's like hitting a batter within a pitch. And you
00:49:46know, when you're a pitcher in baseball, it's like, great,
00:49:48you're an asshole, you did something I didn't like, I'm
00:49:50gonna hit you in the back. We're moving on. We're done.
00:49:55The robber, you pro or anti violence, take a stance fine for
00:49:58once. For all.
00:50:02Very much, bro. No, it's
00:50:06what Joe Joe, like, when Joe clarifies it, it makes even more
00:50:10sense of being like, all right, he just doesn't want, you don't
00:50:12want to look at like three minute reviews for a borderline
00:50:16flagrant one, like over policing, I think is the thing
00:50:18he hates right now. And people just like nostalgia, period.
00:50:21Like who loves everyone loves watching those old, you know,
00:50:25Jeff Van Gundy hanging hanging off of like Alonzo Mornings
00:50:28leg or something like that, or whatever from the old fight,
00:50:29like in the night, like, that's the stuff that we don't see much
00:50:32of anymore. And over policing, I guess, has sort of sort of
00:50:38everything, but I don't know, it's maybe it's a byproduct of
00:50:40this just generation to like, the, they just guys are don't
00:50:45have that level of, you know, animosity more. But it is, I'd
00:50:49like to see more, it would be fairly from an entertainment
00:50:52standpoint, from a cover standpoint, give me more, give
00:50:54me all that. Give me all the beefs you can get, because
00:50:56that's, that's what we need right now. But the grand stuff
00:50:59on Friday was great.
00:51:01Also, in over policing, like, we'll always remember that was
00:51:06it sunspur series where people got text for coming on the
00:51:09bench. Like, that's another thing where it's like, if
00:51:13there's a brouhaha, let the fellas in, like, jump in and
00:51:16like, protect their feet, like, don't necessarily call someone
00:51:19that, like, players in Major League Baseball are allowed to
00:51:22come off the bench. And you always have like the kind of
00:51:25out of shape bullpen catcher trotting in from the bullpen.
00:51:28That's good old fashioned fun. Like I want to like, obviously,
00:51:31Al Horford is not going to come in, maybe he will throw like a
00:51:34flying leg kick. But like, you know what, they like to see him
00:51:37get in the mix. And it shouldn't be just limited to the guys on
00:51:40the court. Like what if Jalen was on the bench for that grant
00:51:43foul, he wouldn't have been able to run in and confront grant.
00:51:46And I do like that Jalen someone put together like a supercut of
00:51:49all the time Jalen has run into try and defend JT. And I do like
00:51:53that Jalen I think it's kind of de facto enforcer on this team
00:51:57because there's not a lot of other guys who I guess have has
00:52:01as much edge as as Jalen does. And I saw a bunch of comments
00:52:06about that, like, Joe Mazula doesn't want these Celtics to be
00:52:09fighting because like no one on the Celtics will be fighting. No
00:52:12Joe Mazula wants to fight like he's there. He was there out
00:52:17there blocking shots. You know, after timeouts earlier in the
00:52:19year, I would like to like let him like throw a hard shoulder
00:52:22into a guy. I think it's fine.
00:52:25You guys remember that scuffle like a couple years ago where
00:52:28like they're fighting for a loose ball out of bounds. Oh,
00:52:31yeah. Yeah, it's he has that. This is what Joe lives for. And
00:52:35so it was also that time like Rob had to hold him back. Like
00:52:38two seasons ago, Robert Williams was like holding him back
00:52:40because he was like getting into an argument with a player in
00:52:42the other team. It was like getting ready to go. Yes. Joe
00:52:46Mazula wants to fight. I love it. I'm here for it.
00:52:50All right, B-Rob, we don't have we don't have graphics or music
00:52:54stats brown around now from B-Rob.
00:52:58All right, so we got we got five stats here. It opened up just
00:53:02to keep the perspective and I'll we'll play a little gamut. So
00:53:06Peyton Pritchard three point attempts per 36 minutes. Where
00:53:12do you guys believe he ranks in the NBA right now?
00:53:14Fourth, I'm going to say third. Sean gets it. We had third with
00:53:2112.2. Three point attempts per 36 minutes. That is that is
00:53:27getting them up and he's still hitting over 40%. So that is
00:53:32music to Joe Mazula's ears. Keeping up the three point
00:53:35attempts. Jason Tatum, where does he rank right now in just
00:53:38not for 36 but three point attempts per game?
00:53:40He's also getting them up there because he had 18 in one game.
00:53:46I'm going to say six.
00:53:49I'm going to go away. I'm going to say I'm going to say second.
00:53:53Split the difference. Fourth, fourth for Tatum. He is taking
00:53:5711.3 per game and the very weird three. He's behind.
00:54:02I got to be right. Lamello. Actually, Anthony Edwards is
00:54:06second league in three point attempts now and Maxie are the
00:54:09only three guys that have them for threes point attempts per
00:54:13game. Jalen Brown field goal attempts per game. Where does
00:54:19Jalen Brown rank in the NBA right now? Field goal attempts
00:54:22per game. If this is a high and he's shooting 40% that's not a
00:54:26good combination.
00:54:27Fourth. I'm going to say he doesn't take, does he take that
00:54:31many shots like Luka and people like that exist?
00:54:33It's got it. I read. I retract that 12th.
00:54:36I was going to say like 18th.
00:54:39Oh my God. Packard Packard had it for he's he is for what a move
00:54:44by Packard to have a surge. Go over here.
00:54:48Go over here. Go over here. Go over here. Go over here. Go
00:54:52over here. Go over here. Go over here. Go over here. Go over
00:54:56surge. Go over here. Got Packard 21.7 field goal attempts
00:54:59per per game behind the NBA.
00:55:04I'd have to. I did not get the list there. I think Anthony
00:55:07Edwards is certainly on there. I think Lamel too. I'll look it
00:55:10up in a second. But yeah, fourth, that is a problem for
00:55:13Jalen Brown. He is. I do not think that's a good stat for a
00:55:17guy shooting 40% from the field. And I think it is kind of
00:55:20indicative of him of maybe it was because injury, but I think
00:55:23he got in some bad habits in some of these games of like
00:55:26taking too many contested twos or just wild twos again. And as
00:55:31well, three point shot not falling, but just somebody keep
00:55:32an eye on their Jalen's getting them up, not getting up as many
00:55:35threes as the other guys, but certainly getting the shots up.
00:55:37And that hasn't necessarily been a good thing for the Celtics
00:55:42offense. All right, Nimi, where does he rank among rotation
00:55:48players in offensive rebounds per 36 minutes in the NBA?
00:55:53You're going to tell me first, aren't you? This is part of
00:55:55your Nimi agenda.
00:56:00I'm gonna go fifth.
00:56:02Sean gets it again. Fifth.
00:56:05You told me to go with my gut.
00:56:08Your gut was wrong.
00:56:09Go to the right ones. 5.7 offensive rebounds per 36
00:56:13minutes for Nimi. Up there with some pretty limbering big so
00:56:19that is pretty good news for him given what he's doing on
00:56:22finishing there and what he's been able to hold his own
00:56:24defensively. And last but not least, Al Horford, where does
00:56:31he rank in free throw attempts per game in the NBA right now?
00:56:35Dead last.
00:56:38I agree with that. Has he attempted a free throw?
00:56:39He has not. You guys both got it. He has attempted zero free
00:56:42throws in 152 minutes. That is, yes, tied for last with, I
00:56:47think, a bunch of other people. I do not believe many other
00:56:50people have taken more than who have played 152 minutes have
00:56:54not taken a free throw there. I think there may be some out
00:56:56there, but I did not want to come up. So Al is doing a great
00:57:00job of not getting too much in the fray. And I think the
00:57:05double bigs alongside Al will continue because they should be
00:57:11protecting Al Horford at all cost.
00:57:13I got I got one more stat and it's how many two pointers per
00:57:18game is Sam Hauser averaging? And it's one. Averaging 1.5
00:57:24takes per game, one make a game shooting 66 or 67% on twos. And
00:57:32I just I just wanted to put it out there. Four games, four two
00:57:35pointers. I think that the over under Jay and I set was about
00:57:3950. So he's blowing past that. So I just thought we had to keep
00:57:44everyone accountable in that regard.
00:57:47You might have to get his ear at a game packer in Philly or
00:57:50something like that. Let's let's see. I'm not a man. Let's
00:57:53hey, Jay King, that guy specifically didn't think you
00:57:56could do it. He also said some disparaging things about your
00:57:59brother and your son. And you should probably show up.
00:58:06We're gonna finish this off with the most absurd segment in
00:58:10sports, the still potable potable still.
00:58:17And today, a submission from Peyton Pritchard.
00:58:22Walking into the game, I believe on third or I don't even know
00:58:26where it was. But I've been calling him Sam Hauser and Luke
00:58:29Cornett, the Caucasian nesting dolls. But no, he has come up
00:58:33with a new nickname, just a brilliant t shirt, the three of
00:58:36them on it, trace late chase, which is a fantastic nickname
00:58:42much better than mine. But I have a better nickname
00:58:46suggestion. After trace late chase trace late chase, of
00:58:50course, is Spanish for Oh, it's a it's a famous cake. You know,
00:58:53people have a trace late chase cake. But I'm pretty sure that
00:58:56just means three milks. And so that's the nickname we're going
00:59:01with three milks, but put that on a t shirt. If that was the
00:59:04same exact t shirt, but instead of said trace late chase, it
00:59:07just said three milks that would sell now people would buy a
00:59:10three milks.
00:59:12It's I hadn't seen that yet. I think that was at the garden.
00:59:17It must have been Monday night.
00:59:19Pritchard is kind of getting I think embracing the the media
00:59:23game even more so like he's he's starting to send out more
00:59:25videos like self made videos and stuff. So now he's got that
00:59:28he's got
00:59:29he staged an event where he was playing pickup against those
00:59:32kids.
00:59:33If that was a plant there, then like what a move. That would be
00:59:36the move of all moves because no one's sniffed that one out. He
00:59:38got his got his wife to take that from afar. No, but it is
00:59:42it's I, I think Pritchard might be realizing here how much of a
00:59:47hero he is to boss like six foot Bostonians everywhere. That
00:59:52dreamed of putting up 1232 game or whatever in the NBA and is
00:59:56fully maybe embracing it now which is I think a smart move I
00:59:59am.
01:00:01So look out for the three milks shirt that we're gonna have to
01:00:04create. And Sean also came up with a great t shirt idea. I'm
01:00:08not gonna reveal it here because I want us to actually
01:00:10make this shirt. I don't know if we're actually gonna make a
01:00:12three milks t shirt. But we're gonna wait but it's just a
