00:00The United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP29, opened in Baku, Azerbaijan, to address
00:13the climate crisis and agree on measures to combat rising global temperatures.
00:22Iran has called for the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations organization.
00:31And in Russia, the Kremlin government denied on a Monday reports that claimed that the
00:36U.S. President-elect Donald Trump urged Russian President Putin not to escalate the conflict
00:42in Ukraine.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South.
00:50My name is Belen De Los Santos, and from Interceptor Studios in Caracas, Venezuela, we begin with
00:55the news.
01:11The United Nations Conference on Climate Change, COP29, opened in Baku, Azerbaijan, to address
01:16the climate crisis and agree on measures to combat rising global temperatures.
01:21At the opening of the event, COP29's President, Mubarak Bayek, warned that the climate crisis
01:27is not a future problem but a present one, as he reflected on recent natural disasters.
01:32The official stressed that the summit aims to agree on a new climate finance target to
01:37ensure that all countries have the necessary means to adopt much stronger climate measures.
01:43He also reiterated that the UN has called for urgent collective action, led by the G20
01:48group, to reduce extreme weather events.
01:56But we need much more from all of you.
01:59When I want to be crystal clear about our expectations, our plan is based on two pillars
02:07to enhance ambition and enable action.
02:12This means setting out clear climate plans and delivering the finance we need.
02:19These two pillars are mutually reinforcing, each sending a strong signal to the other.
02:25Because as we mobilize climate finance, we allow for higher ambitions.
02:32And as we signal together higher ambition, we build trust to unlock greater financial
02:38commitments.
02:40Dear colleagues, to enable action, the COP29 President's top priority is to agree a fair
02:48and ambitious new collective quantified goal on climate finance.
02:55And the head of Cuba's National Seismological Service, Enrique Arango, described as moderately
02:59strong the earthquakes that occurred on Sunday in the central eastern region of this country.
03:05During a meeting with the first secretary of the Provincial Committee of Santiago de
03:09Cuba, Beatriz Johnson, the specialist detailed that most important earthquakes occurred 48
03:15kilometers southeast of Pilon in Granma province.
03:18The first one, a magnitude of 6 on the Richter scale and the main one of magnitude 6.7.
03:25Although the affectations are not considerable in some territories of Granma, there were
03:29landslides and partial damages in residential buildings.
03:33According to Arango, aftershocks of lesser magnitude will continue throughout Monday
03:38so the population must take necessary measures.
03:53And Cuba continues recovering after the passage of Hurricane Rafael and the two earthquakes
03:57that shook the center and east of the Caribbean island on Sunday.
04:01With more details, let's update and listen to our correspondent in Havana, Fabiola López.
04:09Hello, how are you?
04:11A pleasure to greet you from Havana.
04:14Cuba continues with the recovery efforts after the passage of Hurricane Rafael five days ago.
04:20Already this Monday, teaching activities were resumed throughout the country, as President
04:25Miguel Díaz-Canel informed in his ETSA account, adding that classes could be resumed in most
04:32of the Cuban schools and universities that had to close their doors due to the passage
04:37of the hurricanes.
04:38The president thanked the teachers, workers, families and students who joined the recovery
04:44works.
04:45Of course, in the province when there are still more difficulties, classes will be resumed
04:50gradually as the situation normalizes.
04:53At the moment, the priority is to increase electricity coverage in Artemisa and to reach
04:58Pinar del Río.
05:00These are the most affected provinces.
05:03Havana is already at 95.6% electricity coverage, Mallabeque is at 89.7%, while Artemisa is
05:12only 1.48%.
05:15These are the provinces that suffer the greatest damage from the hurricane.
05:20In Artemisa, there are 135 megawatts affected.
05:25It is the province with the greatest damage to service, Havana with 100 megawatts affected
05:31and Mallabeque with 21 megawatts affected.
05:34In Havana, progress in recovery is being checked.
05:38There are also 39 hospitals and 9 water supply sources offering service and the authorities
05:44continue to check on the progress of the recovery.
05:48The support of the contingents of Linemen from Grama, Holguín, Las Tunas, Santiago
05:54de Cuba, Matanzas and Santiago de Cuba is maintained.
05:58It was also reported that a brigade from the Isla de la Juventud was on its way to
06:03Havana to also support the recovery.
06:06On the other hand, the central eastern region remains attentive to the seismic situation.
06:12Authorities have been calling on the population to keep informed through the official media
06:16after the two strong earthquakes of Manitou 6 and 6.7 that shocked the eastern region
06:23of the country on Sunday, affecting more than 14,000 customers who were left without
06:29electricity in Grama.
06:31The Grama Electric Company was reporting damages in the infrastructure as a consequence of
06:36the earthquake.
06:37It was reported that two brigades of the Grama Electric Company were working until around
06:435 a.m. to provide service to the D33KB line in the municipality of Pilón, which is the
06:50most affected region where the two earthquakes took place.
06:54Now it has been possible to provide services to the substation of Sevilla and thus provide
07:01electricity to more than 2,500 customers.
07:12And for today, it has been said that the priority is to give service to the remaining substation.
07:18On the other hand, the Ministry for Public Health, José Ángel Portal, has assured that
07:24the protocols established for cases of earthquakes are being complied with and assured that the
07:30Ministry of Public Health is evaluating the aid that might be necessary in the affected
07:36provinces in accordance with the plans foreseen for this type of natural phenomena.
07:41Well, in general, we are working on the recovery and we are also working to restore the damages
07:47caused by the two earthquakes that took place over the weekend.
07:51Fortunately, no deaths or missing persons have been reported in either of these two
07:56contingencies.
08:06We continue in Cuba as recovery efforts ensure that the passage of Hurricane Rafael, President
08:12Miguel Díaz-Canel reiterated the importance of guaranteeing all services to the population.
08:18Díaz-Canel also recognized the extraordinary efforts of all the workers involved in this
08:23recovery process.
08:24Let's listen.
08:28The most important thing now is to try to conclude the cleanup of each of the affected
08:33places and to focus on water and electricity, which are the things that are hitting us the
08:37hardest now and are beginning to be critical, as there are people who have been without
08:42water nor electricity for four days.
08:45I believe that a lot of work has been done in these days, but the hurricane undoubtedly
08:50left these severe affectations and what we have to see is how to mitigate them, knowing
08:54there are places where the electric service will cannot be supplied still, how we are
08:59going to mitigate this situation, especially by finding other means to supply water to
09:05that population.
09:09Now we have a short break coming up, but first, remember you can join us on TikTok
09:13at Tesser English, where you will find news in different formats, news updates and much
09:18more.
09:19We'll be right back, stay with us.
09:33Army has deployed artillery shelling and quadcopter drones to target the main entrance of the
09:38Kamal Atwan Hospital in northern Gaza.
09:40Amid the ongoing siege, three Palestinians have been injured, according to preliminary
09:44reports by the hospital.
09:46Meanwhile, the Israeli military is also targeting high-rising buildings overlooking the Nazzarim
09:52Corridor, a four-mile-long road just south of Gaza City that stretches from the Israeli
09:59border to the Mediterranean Sea.
10:01The Syrian regime has been expanding the corridor, which covers 58 square kilometers and has
10:06now heavy military presence, raising concerns among Palestinians over a prolonged occupier
10:12presence in Gaza.
10:18And the Israeli army spokesperson Avichai Andrei has issued forced evacuation orders
10:23for southern Lebanon, saying the population must move north of the Awale River.
10:29The order was addressed to over 20 towns, including Maracaba and Bani Hayyan, all localities
10:35where Israeli military would be acting with force.
10:39In this context, at least three people have been killed in an air raid on Lebanon's town
10:45of Srifah and in the Tyre governorate, according to reports from the National News Agency.
10:51The Israeli army continues its offensive in southern Lebanon, hitting also the outskirts
10:56of the Rashidiyeh refugee camp south of Tyre, as well as nearby towns and the Batouliyeh
11:03plains.
11:09Also in this context, the legal team of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu again asked
11:14the Jerusalem court for a delay of more than two months to his testimony in the corruption
11:20trial that has been open against him since 2020.
11:24Precisely, Netanyahu's lawyer claimed that the request is due to security incidents,
11:29in addition to giving the defense more time to adequately prepare for his testimony and
11:34not to harm the public interest.
11:37This is not the first time that the Prime Minister's legal representatives have requested
11:41an extension.
11:43Since last July, they asked to push the date to March of 2025.
11:48Netanyahu has been charged with fraud, bribery and abuse of trust in three separate corruption
11:53cases since 2019.
11:56If convicted with a final sentence, he would have to leave office.
12:05The Palestinian Islamic Resistance, Hamas, issued a strong message to the meeting of
12:10the Islamic Operation Organization taking place in Saudi Arabia on Monday to stop Israel's
12:15genocidal operation against Gaza and Lebanon.
12:18Hamas called for an immediate halt to all normalization treaties with the Zionist entity
12:23and affirmed that those who have cooperated with the regime are stained with the blood
12:28of thousands of women and children.
12:31They also demanded that a union be formed to break the Zionist blockade against Gaza
12:36and empower the Palestinian people and their rights.
12:39The claim is made while the Arab Islamic Summit kicks off in the Saudi capital of Riyadh to
12:45address the cessation of the Israeli aggression in the Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
12:54And Iran has called for the expulsion of Israel from the United Nations, stating it has become
13:01the greatest threat to the legitimacy of the diplomatic body.
13:05The Persian nation's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Ghassem
13:09Kharibavadi drew up a detailed list of the Zionist government's attacks against the organization,
13:16ranging from the declaration of its Secretary General as Persona Non Grata to deliberate
13:21assassination of hundreds of its workers.
13:25For the Iranian Authority, the country that has expelled the UN Agency for Palestinian
13:30Refugees disregarded the ruling of the International Court of Justice and attacked the peace mission
13:36in Lebanon, has breached Article 2 of the UN Charter and should no longer remain a member
13:41of the entity.
13:49And in Saudi Arabia, Muslim and Arab leaders meet on Monday for the second emergency summit
13:54to discuss the ongoing crisis in the Middle East.
13:57With a focus on Israel's aggression against Palestine and Lebanon, the joint summit of
14:03the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation seeks to stop the attacks, protect
14:08civilians and provide support to the Palestinian and Lebanese people, as well as to put pressure
14:14on the international community to take decisive actions to establish peace in the region.
14:19The event aims at creating a roadmap to ultimately reach a ceasefire between the Hamas resistance
14:26and Israeli forces.
14:32And now we have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our

15:10Welcome back to From the South.
15:11Law enforcement officials in Alabama in the southeastern United States reported on Sunday
15:17a shooting at the Tuskegee University that left one person dead.
15:22The authorities detailed that 16 other people were also injured during preliminary investigation.
15:27It was learned that the victim was an 18-year-old male who was not a member of the university
15:34community.
15:35Police also confirmed that the arrest of a 25-year-old citizen identified as Shah Mirik,
15:42who was carrying a pistol adapted as a machine gun.
15:45According to the gun violence file, the incident became the 456th mass shooting in the country
15:53in this year.
15:59In this context, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump continues to make several key administration
16:05appointments ahead of his new term in office.
16:09Precisely, Trump named Congresswoman Elise Stefanik as Ambassador to the United Nations.
16:15The Republican said that he picked Stefanik, a longtime ally, because she is an incredible
16:22strong, tough and smart America First fighter.
16:26For her part, Stefanik confirmed her acceptance of the role in a statement to the New York
16:31Post saying she was ready to advance Trump's proposals through strong leadership.
16:42And in Russia, the Kremlin government denied on Monday reports that claim that U.S. President-elect
16:47Donald Trump has spoken with Russian President Vladimir Putin, where Trump had allegedly
16:52urged Putin not to escalate the conflict in Ukraine.
16:56Casting the media reports as pure fiction, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the report
17:02was completely untrue, fake news and the most obvious example of the quality of information
17:08that is being published nowadays.
17:10Asked if Putin had plans for any contacts with Trump, the Russian government spokesman
17:15insisted that there are no concrete plans yet.
17:25In other news, Ecuador's Vice President, Verónica Abad, denounced on Sunday President
17:29Daniel Novoa as the ringleader of an alleged coup d'etat already underway.
17:34The Vice President, who has been a delegate to international missions since her election
17:38and is currently facing a severe sanction from the Ministry of Labor, addressed the
17:43country in the evening hours.
17:45She assured that the President, in complicity with some parliamentarians and members of
17:50the Executive, intends to disqualify her from assuming the presidency when he begins
17:55his campaign for re-election.
17:57In the words of the Vice President, Novoa, who was her running mate, has already prepared
18:02the rupture of the constitutional order in Ecuador.
18:11With the sole purpose of stopping me from assuming the presidency of the Republic when
18:16the President and candidate enters into his campaign, in which he has been openly involved
18:20since the beginning of his government.
18:23Using arguments typical of a dictatorship, President Novoa together with his ministers,
18:28have prepared, in an organized manner, the rupture of the constitutional order and the
18:33evident coup d'etat that is being prepared for January 6, 2025, to take the presidential
18:39succession and pretend to assure, in this way, his re-election.
18:50On his part, President Daniel Novoa appointed this Monday Zaira Moya as Vice President of
18:56the Republic after the sanction of the Ministry of Labor to Verónica Álvarez.
19:00The presidency pointed out that the official has demonstrated an exemplary career in public
19:05service with a solid background in public management and a deep commitment to the welfare
19:11of all Ecuadorians.
19:12Meanwhile, Abad affirmed that the government suspended her with arguments typical of a
19:18dictatorship in order to take the presidential succession and ensure her re-election.
19:30We go now to Mexico, as on Sunday the capital city, Zócalo Square, was dressed up to host
19:35more than 1,000 mariachis playing in unison, achieving a new world record for the country.
19:41The performance was part of the closing act of a five-day event featuring daily concerts
19:46and open-air performances to celebrate the traditional Mexican music.
19:51Emblematic songs such as Cielito Lindo, El Son de la Negra and El Rey were played at
19:56the famous venue, offering a unique moment for spectators.
20:00In total, 1,222 mariachis from all Mexican states came together to take on the challenge.
20:07In this regard, participants and musicians assured that the new record shows the world
20:12the pride that the North American country feels for its culture.
20:30And like this, we have come to the end of this news brief.
