00:00On the first day of debates the member countries of the United Nations demanded
00:12the United States to lift the economic blockade it has imposed on Cuba for more
00:16than 60 years and that the Caribbean nation be excluded from the list of
00:21countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism. In Palestine the displaced
00:29people settled inside a stadium outside the city of Gaza due to the ongoing
00:33Israeli bombardment of the so-called safe zones. And in Argentina the
00:40university unions will hold a national strike on October 30 and are considering
00:46another protest in defense of public universities on November 12th.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South. I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios
00:58in Caracas, Venezuela. We begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:17On the first day of debates the member countries of the United Nations
01:22demanded the United States to lift the economic blockade it has imposed in Cuba
01:26for more than 60 years and that the Caribbean nation be excluded from the
01:30list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism. During the day several member
01:35blocs such as the non-aligned countries, groups of friends in defense of the
01:40United Nations Charter, CELAC, CARICOM, the African group and G77 plus China
01:45underlined that the U.S. blockade is the major obstacle that Cuba faces in its
01:51efforts to achieve its development goals. The non-aligned government expressed its
01:56concern regarding the impact of the blockade on the livelihood of the Cuban
02:00people while CARICOM urged the U.S. to take measures to rebuild relations with
02:05the Caribbean island to strengthen multilateralism.
02:12The permanent representative of Singapore on behalf of the Association
02:17of Southeast Asian Nations remembered that the General Assembly adopted the
02:21resolution of ending the embargo 31 times before. The diplomat later
02:26highlighted the negative impact of the blockade on ordinary Cuban people.
02:32The General Assembly has adopted this resolution 31 times by an overwhelming
02:41majority since 1992. Each year nearly all UN member states vote in favor of the
02:50resolution. This reflects the international community's strong support
02:56for the principles enshrined in the UN Charter namely sovereign equality,
03:03non-interference, non-intervention and the settlement of disputes by peaceful
03:07means to preserve international peace and security and justice. This has
03:13affected the trajectory of sustainable development across the board in Cuba and
03:18negatively impacted the lives of ordinary Cuban people. The U.S. embargo
03:25has cost Cuba over 164 billion U.S. dollars at current prices. From March
03:332023 to February 2024 alone the blockade cost Cuba over five billion U.S. dollars
03:42in losses. The Iraqi permanent representative on behalf of the G77 and
03:49China spoke out against the U.S. blockade imposed in Cuba and its
03:53extraterritorial policies noting they all violate the right to trade
03:57freely of all nations.
04:01We are deeply concerned about the widening of the extraterritorial nature
04:07of the embargo on Cuba notably through the full implementation of Title 3 of
04:14the Helms-Burton Act. The application of this law is a clear transgression to the
04:21freedom of commerce among nations because of its intimidating purpose by
04:29punishing any trade or investment transactions between any given country.
04:35In this context the permanent representative of Venezuela to the
04:39United Nations Samuel Moncada stressed the hardship of the Cuban population as
04:43result of the U.S. coercive policies. Embargo against Cuba constitutes a
04:49massive violation of the human rights of its people. No Cuban family escapes its
04:54impacts. This was particularly clear in recent days when the power grid of this
05:02sisterly nation was seriously damaged leaving entire families without
05:06electricity for days. This is a direct consequence of the embargo that was
05:13celebrated on social media by U.S. representatives recognizing their
05:19responsibility for a clearly criminal policy. Likewise in this context PhD
05:24Deputy Permanent Representative of the Philippines to the United Nations Leila
05:28Santos stressed the urgent need to immediately lift the U.S. blockade against
05:33Cuba as it has been a global claim for 30 years. The Philippines aligns itself
05:40fully with the statements delivered by Singapore on behalf of ASEAN, Uganda on
05:45behalf of NAM and Iraq on behalf of the group of 77 in China. The Philippines
05:51supports the implementation of General Assembly Resolution 78-7 on the
05:56necessity of ending the economic commercial and financial embargo by the
06:00U.S. against Cuba. The report of the Secretary General clearly shows that the
06:06international community once again strongly supports an end to the six
06:11decade embargo, an unjust and unjustified sanctions policy. In addition the
06:17Permanent Representative of Mexico to the United Nations Enrique Vasconcelos
06:22reaffirmed his nation's support to Cuba highlighting they will
06:26continue cooperating in all areas with the nation.
06:31Once again we express our firm support for Cuba, a country with which Mexico
06:39will continue to work in order to overcome the joint challenges that
06:45we face and do this through cooperation, dialogue and regional integration as we
06:51proved in recent days by offering all about the help that we could to Cuba
06:57after the electric crisis, the grid crisis that turned out the lights on the
07:02island for several days. Let's take a short break but remember you can join us
07:06on tik-tok at TELUS. We'll be right back, stay with us.
07:51The Israeli group announced this October 29th that its new Secretary General will be
07:55Sheikh Naim Qassem. Qassem was deputy for more than three decades to former
08:00leader Hassan Nasrallah killed in an Israeli attack. The group vowed to
08:04continue Nasrallah's policies until victory is achieved. Qassem has long been
08:09one of Hezbollah's leading spokesmen giving interviews to foreign media even
08:13during the period of heightened confrontation with Israel this year.
08:22In Palestine the displaced people settled inside a stadium outside the
08:29city of Gaza due to the ongoing Israeli bombardment of the so-called safe zones.
08:33The refugees expressed their discomfort due to the precarious conditions they
08:39are living in and their fear of the coming winter. After the intensification
08:44of the Tel Aviv offensive against the towns of Avalia, Beit Lahiya and others
08:48in the north of the Gaza Strip, thousands of Palestinians families were forced to
08:52move again. According to local media the Israeli occupation army intensified its
08:57siege of the northern Gaza Strip in early September and launched a campaign to
09:03limit the delivery of humanitarian aid to Palestinians. In Palestine the Israeli
09:11army commits a new massacre after bombing a building sheltering displaced
09:15families in the north of the Gaza Strip. Palestinian authorities reported that
09:19the number of people killed in the bombing rose to 77 which targeted a
09:24five-story building located in the city of Beit Lahiya. According to residents
09:28testimonies more than 100 people were sheltered in the place when it was hit
09:33by Israeli missiles. On related topics also in the United Nations during a
09:43meeting of the Security Council, Iranian ambassador to the United Nations Amir
09:47Saeed Eravini pointed out that Israel's attacks on Iran are a flagrant violation
09:53of international law and the United Nations Charter. We condemn Israeli
09:58aggression in the strongest possible terms. Israel's hostile actions are a blatant
10:03and dangerous breach of international law and the UN Charter, particularly the
10:08principle of sovereignty and territorial integrity and prohibition
10:13on threats or the use of force against the sovereignty of states. These
10:18principles are not merely abstract ideal, they are foundational pillars upon which
10:26the international peace and stability rely. The Iranian representative accused
10:31the United States of being an accomplice of the Israeli regime in the genocide
10:35perpetrated against the peoples of Palestine and Lebanon. United States
10:40involvement in Israeli aggression through its provision of technical
10:45expertise and advanced military system to Israel has further instigated and
10:50emboldened Israel to conduct its aggressive attack against Iran. Therefore
10:56the US government is complicit in Israeli aggression and will bear its
11:01consequences. Furthermore, the United States has already been complicit in the
11:07ongoing war crimes and genocidal campaign targeting civilian and civilian
11:13infrastructure both in Gaza and Lebanon. The vast majority of bombs Israeli
11:19dropped on Gaza and Lebanon. In China, local press announced on Tuesday that
11:25one house said the only women spaceflight engineer is part of the
11:29Shenzhou-19 mission which will take off on Wednesday the Zhuhuan satellite launch
11:35center in northwest of the country. The mission made up of three astronauts will
11:40lift off at 4.27 a.m. local time Wednesday heading for Tiangong space
11:45station located around 450 kilometers above the earth's surface.
11:50Authorities reported that the team will return to earth in late April or early
11:55May 2025 while the crew that is now aboard the Tiangong space station is
12:01expected to come back to earth on November 4th after completing handover
12:06procedures with the incoming astronauts. Regarding a spaceflight engineer
12:10Haozi, deputy director of the China-made space agency, remarked her
12:16preparation. Let's listen.
12:21Before being selected, Wang Haozi was a senior engineer at the Academy of
12:28Aerospace Liquid Propulsion Technology of the China Aerospace Science and
12:32Technology Corporation. She is currently the only female aerospace flight
12:36engineer in China and will also be the third woman in China to carry out manned
12:41spaceflight missions. Russia launches ballistic and cruise missiles as part of
12:48the nuclear deterrence exercise to prepare to respond to a similar future
12:52attack by an enemy. The Russian defense ministry reported that in the strategic
12:56exercise an intercontinental ballistic missile was launched and the strategic
13:01nuclear missile submarine of the Russian Pacific Fleet was put into operation. At
13:06the same time, several long-range aircraft were part of the exercise by
13:10launching cruise missiles in the air, all of them hitting their targets. President
13:15Vladimir Putin stated that the use of nuclear weapons is a measure of last
13:19resort to ensure the security of the country and that Moscow won't be
13:24dragged into an arms race.
13:30I would like to point out that Russia confirms its fundamental position on the
13:35use of nuclear weapons as an extremely exceptional measure to ensure the
13:39security of the state. At the same time, we are fully aware that the nuclear
13:44triad remains a reliable guarantor of the sovereignty and security of our
13:47country and allows us to solve the problems of strategic deterrence as well
13:52as to maintain nuclear parity and the balance of power in the world as an
13:56essential element of global stability. Vladimir Putin stressed that in the face
14:03of current geopolitical tensions, Russia will maintain its nuclear forces at the
14:07necessary level of sufficiency.
14:11In view of increasing geopolitical tensions and the emergence of new
14:15external threats and risks, it is important to have modern strategic
14:19forces that are always ready for combat. We will continue to improve all its
14:24components. We have the resources to do so. I emphasize that we will not engage
14:30in a new arms race, but we will maintain nuclear forces at the necessary level of
14:35sufficiency.

15:05Welcome back to From the South. Eight days before the presidential elections
15:31in the United States, the candidates are intensifying their campaign events to
15:36get the undecided vote in key states. Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican
15:41Donald Trump are in the final stretch of their election campaign and in the
15:46battle to win votes with only one week to go before the presidential elections,
15:50which will be held on Tuesday, November 5th. Kamala Harris describes her
15:54campaign closing as the final play against the Republican candidate, while
15:59Trump returned to Pennsylvania, one of the seven states that will be called to
16:03tip the balance. According to experts, states such as Arizona, Georgia, Michigan,
16:08among others, could change the results of the election due to the large number of
16:13undecided citizens in these states. On Monday, the president of the United
16:22States, Joe Biden, exercised his right to vote early at a polling place in
16:26Wilmington, Delaware, his home state. The president took advantage of the wait
16:31in line to greet and chat with voters who approached him, including Democratic
16:36Congresswoman Lisa Blunt Rochester, now a candidate for the Senate from Delaware.
16:41Biden mentioned that the White House is holding talks with Egypt on a proposal
16:46for a two-day truce in Gaza and insisted on the phrase, a ceasefire is necessary,
16:51repeated several times by himself and his nominee Kamala Harris, but which has
16:56yet to materialize. The governments of Vietnam and Venezuela strengthen
17:05cooperation with a new investment agreement of mutual interest. This
17:09Tuesday, Venezuela's executive vice president, Delcy Rodriguez, met with the
17:13president of Vietnam, Luong Kwon, during her official visit to the Asian country
17:18with the purpose of strengthening relations between both nations. The
17:22meeting took place in Vietnam at the presidential hall, where topics such as
17:26investment, oil, agriculture and telecommunications were discussed. On the
17:31other hand, the vice president of Venezuela is expected to address issues
17:34related to investment in areas of health, culture, among others, within the framework
17:39of the 35 years of historical relations between both countries. In Argentina, the
17:48university unions will hold a new national strike on October 30 and are
17:53considering another protest in defense of public universities, which could take
17:57place on November 12. The unions will take part in a new strike this week, in
18:02which they will join the two main academic federations, Conadu and Conadu
18:06Histórica, for its part. The union of the University of Buenos Aires began a week
18:11of strike with public classes. At a press conference, they said that so far, during
18:17the Malay government, they have lost 30% of their salaries in real terms and are
18:21more than 60 points behind with respect to inflation. In other news, Argentina, in
18:32the prelude to a transport strike to reject the privatization of airlines, the
18:36government will resume the agenda to move forward in Congress with the law to
18:40return the flag carrier to private ownership, as it was in earlier years. The
18:46project will be reactivated in committees of deputies, while the
18:50privatization discourse is still the order of the day and the government
18:55maintains disciplinary measures, such as the expulsion of Pablo Piro from the
18:59board of directors. The government's initiative to privatize airlines, although
19:04it was always its basic intention, was tied to the aeronautical conflict. The
19:15president of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, inaugurated on October 28th, the ninth
19:20Latin American and Caribbean Energy Week and insisted on the need to diversify
19:25the region's energy matrix. On his speech before representatives of 27 member
19:30countries of the Latin American Energy Organization, the president reaffirmed
19:34the need to face climate challenges with bold and sustainable solutions. Public
19:39Works and Communications Minister Claudia Centurion pointed out that
19:43Paraguay is the only country in the world with 100% of renewable energy
19:48generation. The event will address crucial issues, such as technological
19:52innovations, the development of new energy sources, the production of new
19:57generation fuels and the application of artificial intelligence in this sector.
