00:00How many points are on the board?
00:04Are you guys rolling?
00:05What?
00:06Let's ask questions.
00:07Is this how we start?
00:08How many points are on the board?
00:09Before we answer anything.
00:10All right, the time is ticking.
00:11Points are on the board.
00:12Welcome to Stars and Strings, Megan Maroney.
00:13You're like, thank you.
00:14Buttery nipple.
00:15Ding, ding, ding, ding.
00:16Well, that would be the...
00:17What?
00:18No?
00:19That's how this is started?
00:20Good morning.
00:21I thought we were doing drinks that we will never drink again.
00:24It's called the slippery nipple, I think.
00:26Oh.
00:27It's not a buttery nipple?
00:28Buttery nipples.
00:29I don't know if it sounds like an act, an essay, an act.
00:33Sex on the beach.
00:34There you go.
00:35That's a good one.
00:36Peach schnapps and vodka and stuff.
00:39And that brings us to Tortuga.
00:40Hi.
00:41Let's talk about Tortuga.
00:42I can't wait.
00:43And you know, Tortuga is all about ocean conservation.
00:46And I want to know, what is your favorite ocean animal?
00:53Let's see.
00:54I just swam with sea turtles.
00:55Stop it.
00:56Really?
00:57In St. John.
00:58Yeah.
00:59Yeah.
01:00Yeah.
01:01Oh, wow.
01:02Look at that.
01:03It's perfect.
01:04I was like this close to them.
01:05Are you allowed to touch them?
01:06No.
01:07I don't know.
01:08I don't think there's rules.
01:09It was literally the ocean.
01:10Well, I think there's like a thing.
01:11Like, you can't touch this.
01:12I don't know.
01:13I think if you're swimming with them, you can pet them.
01:15Maybe.
01:16But I didn't want to piss anybody off.
01:17You know what I mean?
01:18Right?
01:19You don't know if a sea turtle has never been aggressive.
01:20But what if he...
01:21Maybe they have like a shark that rides for them.
01:22You know what I mean?
01:25We got to go shark tagging, and we got to pet a shark.
01:28It was terrifying, but it was phenomenal at the same time.
01:32Really?
01:33It was okay.
01:34Okay.
01:35Yeah.
01:36I don't like sharks.
01:37Was Kenny Chesney with you on this trip?
01:38He actually, like I said, he had left early, so he didn't make it to the sea turtles.
01:43But he was there before, yes.
01:45What do you think you've learned the most from Kenny with the time that you've been
01:47able to spend with him?
01:48Because it seems like y'all have gotten pretty close.
01:52I would say, like I said, as an artist, just his work ethic and how much he cares about
01:58his fans and the way he's just made, it almost feels bigger than just his music too.
02:06So aside from writing really good songs and being a great performer, it's like a thing.
02:09You know what I mean?
02:10And what he's created is like a world, and No Shoes Nation is just incredible.
02:15Like bigger picture.
02:16Yeah.
02:17That makes sense.
02:18It's like people go there, and they meet friends.
02:20It's just like an environment that I one day hope my shows will be like.
02:24You know what I mean?
02:25And I think too, on a smaller level, they are like that, which I've learned from him.
02:30But just also, he's a really good person.
02:33Like the way that he supported me, like he doesn't have to do that.
02:37But like the last night at Gillette where he brought me out, or actually all three nights
02:41he did it.
02:42He surprised me the last run of the tour though, and he let me sing Am I Okay with him in front
02:47of a sold out stadium.
02:49And I just sang it like four hours before, but I'm like, who does that?
02:52That's so nice.
02:53It's like, that's like a gift that I can't even like, you can't put like a dollar amount
02:59on that.
03:00That's like just, it's priceless.
03:01Is that overwhelming when you're like, okay, this is what I'm gonna do now, or we're gonna
03:04do this?
03:05Well, the first night I had pranked him, and he thought all the pranks were coming on the
03:09last night, but I was like, we're here all weekend, let's just start on a high note.
03:14So I did the tractor thing, and I was like about to walk off stage, and he like told
03:17the band to play it, and they started playing Am I Okay, and there's a recording on it that
03:21plays on No Shoes Radio, and you can hear me go, what?
03:25No!
03:26And that was like the most surprised I've been.
03:29It was my favorite weekend of the tour, and it's just like, he's a role model in that
03:35way where one day, hopefully if I'm playing stadiums, I can do that for the openers that
03:41I really love and believe in, and yeah, it's awesome.
03:43He's like that.
03:44He just goes, we're gonna do this all of a sudden, and there's like, let's jump on the
03:49guinea train, okay, here's what we're gonna do.
03:51I would want to be prepared for that.
03:52I would feel like, I would say, hey, look, if we're gonna do this, can you please give
03:54me a heads up?
03:55Is it better if you're not prepared, though?
03:58I think it was such a good, fortunately, I've performed that song a lot, so there was no
04:03choice to like, once they start playing, it's like, you better get ready, but I was laughing
04:07about it because I was dressed like him, so the first time I played Am I Okay in like
04:12a full stadium, I looked like a boy.
04:14You looked like a boy, yeah.
04:15So that was fun, yeah.
04:16I want to talk about some dance moves as well because I think that I saw-
04:20Oh, we need your help.
04:21Saw this one?
04:22No.
04:23I saw you were moonwalking, and I believe, were you wearing Crocs while moonwalking?
04:26Birkenstocks.
04:27Birkenstocks, okay, we couldn't tell.
04:29To me, it looked like you really knew what you were doing, though.
04:32Yep.
04:33Actually, more impressive that you're in Birkenstocks than Crocs.
04:35Can you teach us how to moonwalk, do you think?
04:37Like right now?
04:38What is it?
04:39Did you take dance?
04:40Do you want to?
04:41No, I didn't take dance.
04:42I don't remember where I learned how to do that, but it's really not that hard.
04:44So basically, you just take one foot up, slide the other one, do you see the-
04:52So I know the first step, right, is this goes up the same time you go back, right?
04:58Yeah.
04:59Boom.
05:00It's on the knees, I think, and the legs.
05:03But I can't continue it.
05:04I only have this move, and then I can't-
05:05I'm not that good at doing it in boots, but-
05:07On socials right now, we're cutting to you doing it in Birkenstocks.
05:11Perfect.
05:12Our Stars and Strings show here tonight, though, is also benefiting Folds of Honor, and so
05:18I wanted to know-
05:19We're going to talk serious now.
05:20I just wanted to know, for you, just tell us a little bit about your appreciation for
05:25our men and women in uniform.
05:27Yeah, well, I feel like our, well, I know our men and women in uniform, the sacrifices
05:33not only they make, but their families make for our freedom and to protect us is invaluable
05:39and so appreciative of our veterans and current military.
05:44Can we switch it up and talk about Christmas?
05:47Sure.
05:48Blue Christmas, duh.
05:50So I love this.
05:51Let's talk about Christmas.
05:52What do you love about Christmas, and when did you record this?
05:55Are you recording it in February or in the middle of the summer, like a lot of people
05:58are-
05:59I recorded it as soon as I landed back from the UK.
06:02I literally got off the plane and then went to the studio.
06:08We waited the last possible deadline.
06:10We had to beg DSPs to work with us because it was the last minute, but I had no other
06:15choice.
06:16So yeah, it was written maybe August, and then I recorded it.
06:21That sounds like end of September, maybe I got back.
06:23Okay.
06:24Yeah, that's actually close to Christmas.
06:26That's actually the first time.
06:27Can you tell us about All I Want for Christmas as a Cowboy?
06:29Sure.
06:30What do you want to know about it?
06:32When we do it behind the song, we ask three questions, right?
06:35Where were you?
06:36What were you thinking?
06:38When the song came about.
06:39Yeah.
06:40What was I thinking?
06:41Cowboys.
06:42Where was the first one?
06:43Where were you?
06:44I was with Mackenzie Carpenter, Micah Carpenter, and Ben Williams in their house.
06:46They have a little radish room.
06:48All right.
06:49And then what were you thinking?
06:50Cowboys?
06:51I wanted a fun, I don't know, something about Christmas.
06:56I love a boot scootin' song, and I love Christmas, so why not combine the two?
07:01I love how country it is.
07:02I love that, like, I think, too, my best friend grew up listening to Shania Twain to
07:07put up her Christmas tree, and she told me that, like, they didn't listen to Christmas
07:09music.
07:10They listened to Shania, and that was their Christmas music.
07:13And so I think that's been in my brain for so long that I was like, what if we had, like,
07:17a little party, super country moment with Christmas?
07:21That would be fun to put up the tree.
07:23And I actually thought of All I Want for Christmas as a Cowboy, who only wants me.
07:28I was, like, on tour somewhere, and that just came into my brain.
07:31I was like, that'd be a cool song.
07:32So I had it in my notes.
07:33But also, who doesn't want a cowboy?
07:34I know.
07:35Really.
07:36But the funny part is, who only wants me?
07:38Because the last one, I love, love Britney and Jessica, too, all at the same time.
07:44So yeah.
07:45Well, Am I OK?
07:46The album is out now.
07:47We're here at Stars and Strings with Megan Maroney.
07:49Thank you so much for being here with us.
07:50Thanks.
