00:00All right.
00:01Okay, here we go.
00:02All right.
00:03I got it.
00:04He's throwing the phone in my face.
00:05Divisional weekend football questions here.
00:08Question number one.
00:09Where does Sam Darnold end up next season?
00:13Back in Minnesota on a franchise tag.
00:16They have a ton of cap space.
00:18And look, they know they got a guy that can make the playoffs with him because they did
00:21this year and somehow they won 14 games.
00:25I don't want to take away credit from it completely.
00:27But they can't know on J.J. yet.
00:30J.J. needing a second procedure on his knee is a tough break for them because they probably
00:35would be able to get a sense and see him practice a little bit before they had to make the decision.
00:41But I think it makes the most sense to bring him back on a franchise tag.
00:44They got cap space to do it and let J.J. battle for the job and then they can make a more
00:51informed decision one year from now.
00:54Sam Darnold must do everything within his power to remain in Minnesota.
01:00He will not find a better situation that's out there right now.
01:04You just don't have it.
01:06There's no way you can tell me any of these other open quarterback situations are even
01:09half as good as what he's got in Minnesota.
01:12The reason he was able to resurrect his career, so to speak, was because of all the offensive
01:16weaponry he has at his disposal.
01:19That arsenal is amazing and he did really well with it until the Lions just smacked
01:25him back down and the Rams did the same thing.
01:27Those are the only two teams to beat Minnesota all season long.
01:30In the regular season and then in the postseason.
01:33It was two stretches of two losses in a row to Detroit and Los Angeles.
01:37I don't believe in Sam Darnold, but he was really good with Minnesota.
01:40I think the Vikings would be foolish not to bring him back, like Doug said, at least on
01:43a one-year deal.
01:44I don't think I'd franchise him because I don't think you have to franchise him because
01:48I don't think any other team is going to give him some sort of long-term, you know,
01:52four-year $200 million deal that you would give a quarterback.
01:55I think you can get him for less than that and that's the approach I would take if I
01:58were Minnesota.
02:00We'll bring it back for a year, but it's going to be at a discount.
02:02We'll give you like $25 or $30 million.
02:04Interesting.
02:05You guys both go with the Vikings.
02:06I don't think the Vikings want him back.
02:08I think they're ready to move on with the J.J. McCarthy era.
02:11Thank you for all the memories.
02:12You did great.
02:13What a run we had, but it's over.
02:15I think it's the Raiders.
02:17And I think that Sam Darnold is the perfect bridge quarterback.
02:20Now, did he lose some money the last couple games that he played?
02:23Yes, he did.
02:24But overall, he gained money because the whole season, you have to look back and be like,
02:28hey, guess what?
02:29With the maybe right supporting cast, the right coaching, he can help you win some games.
02:34Maybe not 14 games, but he can help you get to the next quarterback.
02:38I think the Raiders are in a position where they need that veteran quarterback and he's
02:41shown he can do something until they get their real quarterback in there.
02:45I think he goes to the Raiders.
02:49All right.
02:50Who has more on the line this weekend?
02:52Lamar Jackson or Josh Allen?
02:55I think it's Lamar Jackson because the media is so quick to turn on him and annoying Josh
02:59Allen is the next big thing.
03:00So there's more pressure on Lamar.
03:03He's got to prove he can win in the playoffs because that's the knock on him.
03:06He doesn't win enough.
03:07A 2-4 record right now in the playoffs.
03:10He's got to improve that.
03:11And the game they've got coming up on Sunday is a monster game.
03:15We're all going to be tuning in.
03:16We can't wait to see it.
03:17I think Lamar is an outstanding quarterback.
03:20I think that too many people just look at what he does with his feet and not enough people
03:24are paying attention to where he's throwing a ball accurately on time.
03:28He had a ton of touchdowns this year.
03:30Touchdown passes this year.
03:32I think the pressure is on him though, because you know, the more you build somebody up,
03:36the bigger the distance is for them to fall down.
03:39And I think there's a lot of people out there that are just waiting for Josh Allen to overtake
03:42it so they can stop talking about the Lamar Jackson narrative.
03:46I feel like the Lamar Jackson narrative is somewhat cemented.
03:48I feel like the Josh Allen narrative could take a huge turn if they lose at home for
03:53the third consecutive year in the playoffs.
03:56So I'm going Josh Allen has more to lose here because I think the opinion of him in the
04:02postseason can change more.
04:03I think you're both kind of right.
04:05So I'm going to go with Lamar right now.
04:06He's got the two MVPs.
04:08That's why, you know, so many people expect so many things from him.
04:10He might have a third MVP at the end of this season.
04:13But if Josh Allen doesn't win this game, Doug, you're right at home.
04:17I don't care.
04:18He needs some heat on him as well at this point.
04:20And he might win the MVP of this season.
04:23You know, everyone sees what he can do and he makes some amazing and great plays.
04:27But at some point you got to get over the hump.
04:29And I think if he doesn't beat Lamar this year, he's going to start feeling Lamar heat
04:33that Lamar gets for the last couple of years.
04:36All right, sticking with the quarterbacks.
04:39Is Justin Herbert overrated?
04:41No, I actually think he's properly rated.
04:44I don't hear too many people going off on how good he is.
04:48I think he is good.
04:50He is short of being elite for sure.
04:53And I'm not sure he's really good, but I think he's properly rated.
04:56He's a quarterback that could really benefit.
04:58His reputation could really benefit from a playoff win right now.
05:01But the bottom line is here, I don't hear too many people raving about Justin Herbert.
05:07So I think he's properly rated.
05:08I guess I hear more people raving about Justin Herbert.
05:11I think he's overrated.
05:12I thought he was overrated in college.
05:14I get it.
05:16He's got the tools.
05:17He's got a big arm.
05:18He's a bigger quarterback.
05:19He can move a little bit.
05:20He's got all those things.
05:21But when it comes to the big game, he doesn't get it done.
05:24He's had amazing regular seasons.
05:25He's had a 5,000 yard season.
05:27He had a season where he just got done throwing for only three interceptions in a whole year.
05:32That's great.
05:33What happened next?
05:34Loss.
05:3514 out of 32.
05:36Four interceptions.
05:38Come on.
05:39I think he is overrated.
05:41And I think it's because no one wants to really criticize him, which makes him overrated,
05:45I think.
05:46I think they just see the skill set, kind of like with Josh Allen.
05:49He's a big, strong-armed quarterback.
05:51He's pretty mobile.
05:52Not as mobile as Josh Allen, but he's got to win at some point.
05:56And Jim Harbaugh put him in really good positions this year.
05:59I know they didn't have maybe the necessary weapons that he would like to have eventually
06:04because they kind of just kept, you know, they dumbed it down for Herbert this year,
06:07kept the turnover rate really low, leaned on the defense.
06:11But they were a favorite going into Houston.
06:13I know they were the road team, but they were the favorite.
06:15And I think the receivers did let Herbert down, but ultimately you're the quarterback
06:19of the team.
06:20So in the end, I think he is slightly overrated.
06:23All right, would Deion Sanders work in Dallas?
06:30I don't see how it can work for him in Dallas because I think there's only room for one
06:34ego in control in Dallas, and it's Jerry Jones.
06:38Deion's got an ego, but I think it's in a good way.
06:41And Deion is a control guy, but I think in a good way.
06:43He's proven that at Colorado.
06:45I think, you know, once he gets going and he gets people to buy into it, and he's a
06:50great salesman, I can't wait to see what he does.
06:53I hope he stays at Colorado because there's a whole new ballgame for him coming in without
06:58his kid being the quarterback or having the best player in the country, you know, play
07:02every snap on the field.
07:04But I don't think it would work out in Dallas.
07:06Dallas needs to have somebody, you know, unfortunately until Jerry changes his ways and I don't think
07:10Jerry's changed his ways anytime soon.
07:12They need somebody that's going to be in lockstep with what Jerry wants.
07:16I got to tell you much of what Gator is.
07:18I completely agree with him.
07:19I don't think it'll work because of the clashing egos and Jerry wants somebody to do his bidding.
07:22And I don't think Deion is that kind of guy.
07:25I'm rooting for Deion, but as a coach, I think he still needs to prove that he can win without
07:29Travis Hunter and Shadur Sanders and Travis Hunter.
07:33Because having those players is one thing.
07:36What are you going to do now that they're gone?
07:39And so I like him, I'm rooting for him.
07:40I think he's a good coach, but doing it without those guys is still important to prove he's
07:44a good coach.
07:45Yeah, but you know what?
07:46If he goes to Dallas, he didn't have to do it without Travis Hunter, Shadur Sanders and
07:51Travis Hunter.
07:52He could do it with Dak Prescott, you know, Micah Parsons and CeeDee Lamb.
07:56So the question is, I think he's a leader of young adults.
08:00Is he a leader of men?
08:01I think in today's NFL, I think he is, and I think it would work for a short period of
08:06time.
08:07This would run old quick.
08:08I think maybe three years might be a Jimmy Johnson situation.
08:11I don't know if he gets the Super Bowls or anything like that, but I think they make
08:14the playoffs again.
08:15They're in the running for the Super Bowl.
08:17But then at some point, the egos do clash and all right, we've had enough.
08:21We went in three, four years.
08:22We tried it out.
08:23We won.
08:24We didn't, whatever.
08:26I can't get away from Dallas radio.
08:28All right, Peyton Manning said on the Manning podcast or Manning Manning cast this week
08:36during the Rams game that you don't have to give your offensive lineman gifts.
08:40He's hearing all these quarterbacks give their offensive linemen these extravagant gifts.
08:43He said, actually, if they didn't make the playoffs, Manning wouldn't give his offensive
08:47line anything.
08:48Are you with Manning on this?
08:50No, I'm not.
08:51These aren't trophies.
08:52It's not like you're, you know, I'm endorsing participation trophies, but there aren't hard
08:57and fast rules for gifts.
08:58Like if you want to give somebody something, feel free to give somebody something.
09:03So no, I'm not on board with him on this.
09:04I think there are two things really interesting about this.
09:06The first is Peyton Manning made the playoffs 15 out of 17 years.
09:11So two years, he didn't give the right exactly what was his rookie season.
09:14So you know, maybe, maybe a little tone deaf on this thing when you made the playoffs every
09:18year.
09:19The other thing is, it's really interesting.
09:21He's talking about it as he's watching Sam Darnold hit the turf again and again and again
09:28and six more times for nine sacks in the game.
09:30I mean, I think in the moment it'd be really hard to endorse Sam Darnold to say, go ahead
09:36and gift your offensive lineman when he's picking himself off the field 10 times.
09:41So I kind of think he's right.
09:42He did say, listen, you don't, these are gifts.
09:44You don't have to give them out.
09:46You know what I mean?
09:47So you kind of earn them.
09:48It's like, it is Christmas.
09:49Were you good?
09:50Were you bad?
09:51Depends on what kind of gift you get.
09:52If you get a gift at all.
09:53So I kind of understand where he's coming from, but they're your old line, man.
09:57You got to keep them happy somehow, some way you got to give them something, even if you
10:01don't make the playoffs, a little something, something, you know, for the effort in case
10:05they come back next year, our last one, this one's gonna be a college football one guys.
10:12The college football title game is between two teams that didn't win their conference
10:16and they both suffered the biggest upset losses of the year.
10:19And in the end, it meant nothing because they're playing each other for the title.
10:23Is this a good thing for college football?
10:24Well, they went to the 12 team playoff format.
10:27So what you have is a mini tournament.
10:29Okay.
10:30This isn't just, we're going to pick the four teams and throw them in there or the top two
10:32teams and put them in there like the BCS.
10:35This is actually a tournament to get in.
10:37So the format allows for you to have a hiccup.
10:41These are two of the blue bloods of college football, right?
10:44These are, these are two teams that people would like to see match up year in year out
10:48because it's always going to be a good matchup because they are good year in and year out.
10:52So they lost a game earlier in the season.
10:54Okay.
10:55What did you do lately?
10:56Well, lately they picked themselves up and they, and they won those games, Ohio state
11:00convincingly against the sec and Notre Dame went off and rattled off what 10, 11 straight
11:06wins.
11:07They've, they've earned her spot in, in this, uh, in this final and I think it's great.
11:11I can't believe you gave us this question because to me, this is not a short story.
11:15This is a novel.
11:17Uh, so here's what they did.
11:20Is it good for college football and does it matter about those big playoff losses?
11:24Well, it doesn't matter because the playoffs are so big.
11:28So I guess the core of this question is having a big playoff, good for college football,
11:33and they have to have a big playoff because the conferences are too big.
11:38You're a crowning conference champions that play half the league.
11:43So it's a watered down champion.
11:46In my world, the playoff would have been six or eight teams and conference champions would
11:50be guaranteed spots, but you can't do that when you have 18 teams in a conference and
11:54you only play half of them.
11:56So the core issue, what's bad for college football, my opinion is the mega conference.
12:02If you didn't have the mega conference, you wouldn't have to have a playoff this big.
12:06And you could see if you wanted those losses to be punishable, they would be, but they've
12:12to make the playoff this big because the conferences are so damn big and the conference championships
12:17are watered down.
12:18I mean, Indiana, would they have won the big 10 if they had to play Penn State and Oregon?
12:23No, I mean, they didn't have to play a bunch of teams.
12:27So no, I don't, I don't think this is great for college football, but it's also year one.
12:32So I don't let it, let it cook and then we'll decide.
12:36Uh, I don't think it's good for college football, but I don't know what college football is
12:40anymore.
12:41And that's the issue.
12:42Honestly, I don't want it to be like the NFL.
12:44I want it to be different.
12:46The best things about college football are going away.
12:50The best things like the upsets, not winning a conference, all that stuff.
12:53It used to matter because it was college football, but I don't know what college football is
12:58anymore.
12:59So I don't think this is good for college football.
13:01It may be good for whatever they're trying to make it now, but for me, who was a college
13:04football fan, not good.
13:07There it is.
13:08That concludes the Y9 Omaha four down around the league blitz thingy.
