00:00The 5th Congress of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, PSV, ended Thursday after an
00:16intense agenda of debates on the upcoming April 27th elections.
00:27Displaced Palestinians faced new hardship as strong winds have caused extensive damage
00:32to their tents, especially in the central city of their Albalá.
00:41And the United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, warned of high pollution in East Asia and
00:47the Pacific regions.
00:54Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas,
00:59Venezuela.
01:00We begin with the news.
01:15The 5th Congress of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, PSV, ended Thursday after an
01:20intense agenda of debates on the upcoming April 27th elections.
01:25For three days, the political organization established the methods for the selection
01:29of candidates to participate in the regional and legislative elections.
01:33More than 21,620,000 citizens are called to elect governors, deputies to the National
01:40Assembly and regional legislative councils.
01:42Vice President of the PSV for Communal Councils and Communes, Jorge Arreaza, highlighted the
01:48importance of respecting the popular will expressed through the vote.
02:04That is why President Maduro insists at this moment in which we have managed to stabilize
02:09the ship after all the storms or the worst of the storm, because the storm continues,
02:14that power must be handed over to the people, that we must guarantee the organization of
02:19the people and the territory so that the people can plan, execute, evaluate and be the master
02:24of its own destiny.
02:25As Commander Hugo Chavez used to say during the discussion of the 2007 reform, I remember
02:32in some way he used to tell us we, the president, the ministers, the governors, the mayors who
02:37are your servants are like your contractors.
02:40We shall do what you tell us to do.
02:49In Colombia, the government of Gustavo Petro announced the third package of emergency decrees
02:54for the Catatumbo region.
02:56The new package is made up of seven decrees, including the limitation in the sale of fuel
03:01in the zone and the change in the allocation of resources and royalties.
03:05Also included are the power to close gas stations, the limitation in the distribution
03:10of fuels and chemical agents that are diverted for the manufacture of coca paste and cocaine
03:16and special measures for the protection of peace signatories, communities and officials
03:21among others.
03:27The trial against former Colombian President Álvaro Uribe for the crime of bribery of
03:32witnesses and procedural fraud began Thursday in Bogota, a case that goes back 13 years.
03:38The trial began after the Bogota Superior Court admitted as evidence on Tuesday the
03:43surveillance interceptions carried out by the Supreme Court on Uribe in 2018.
03:49In this trial, the judge will have to decide whether the prosecution's accusation against
03:53the former president is acceptable or whether, on the contrary, as the defense alleges, Uribe
03:59is not guilty of these charges.
04:01The long-running lawsuit dates back to 2012, when Uribe sued leftist senator Iván Cepeda,
04:07who at the time was preparing a complaint against him for alleged links to paramilitarism
04:13and for witness tampering.
04:20On Thursday, Ecuadorian presidential nominees reached the final day of their election campaigns
04:25at the brink of February 9 elections amid waves of violence and political crisis.
04:31Over 13 million Ecuadorians are summoned to go to the polls on Sunday to decide the nation's future.
04:36Lately, estimates advanced that current president Daniel Novoa and the candidate for the Citizens'
04:41Revolution movement Luisa González are the nominees with more voting intentions.
04:46It is worth highlighting that these presidential elections will be held amid a scenario marked
04:52by political irregularities and new acts of violence in the country.
05:01In Argentina, the far-right government of Javier Milet announced the modification of
05:05the gender identity law three days after the people carried out a massive federal march
05:10for diversity and against fascism.
05:12Precisely, the spokesperson of the presidential office, Manuel Adorni, informed that the government
05:18would postpone the hormone treatment that is now allowed after the age of 16, only with
05:24parents' consent and integral medical assessment after 18 years old.
05:30After the president himself shared a series of fake news regarding the current identity
05:34law, many see this as a repressive response after Argentina's massive anti-fascist march
05:40last Saturday.
05:48And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at
05:52TELUS and English where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
05:56We'll be right back, stay with us.
06:00A U.S. district court in Massachusetts will hold a hearing on a lawsuit filed against
06:26Donald Trump's administration policy that would force thousands of federal employees
06:31to resign.
06:32This demand is a consequence of the deferred resignation offer presented by the government,
06:37which allows federal employees to leave their jobs while receiving pay until the end of
06:42September.
06:43However, it has been criticized as a solution that does not address the needs.
06:47In this sense, it is worth noting that the unions demand the government to implement
06:52a policy that is legal rather than an arbitrary, illegal and short-term ultimatum that workers
06:58cannot comply with.
06:59According to reports, at least 40,000 of these employees have already accepted the agreement,
07:05which represents about 2% of the nearly 2 million federal employees on record.
07:16A U.S. federal court issued a preliminary ruling to hold back from implementation President
07:21Trump's executive order on birthright citizenship.
07:25Precisely, Maryland Federal Courts District Justice Deborah Boardman decided to issue
07:30the injunction indefinitely after listening carefully to the arguments in favor of freezing
07:36the decree.
07:37The Justice Board noted that Supreme Court have always protected birthright citizenship,
07:42adding that President Donald Trump's order disregarded the 14th Amendment.
07:47Trump's decree had been already on hold nationwide due to a separate lawsuit filed by four states
07:53at a Washington court to stop the order.
08:02China dismissed Thursday U.S. President Donald Trump's accusations of interfering in the
08:07Panama Channel through the operational concession of two ports of entry.
08:12Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesman Wu Yikun said the canal was a permanently neutral international
08:18waterway and stressed that his country respects Panama's sovereignty over it as well as its
08:25management and operation.
08:26On the other hand, the Panamanian government also rejected as untrue a White House statement
08:32that announced that U.S. vessels would be exempt from any transit toll in the canal.
08:43The Chinese government reaffirmed its commitment to privacy and data security after ministries
08:48in South Korea blocked access to the Chinese Artificial Intelligence DeepSeek website over
08:53alleged security concerns.
08:55Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wu Yikun ensured that the nation has never required
09:01nor will it request companies or individuals to illegally collect or store data.
09:06The diplomat affirmed that Beijing has firmly opposed the practice of overly eliminating
09:11the concept of national security and politicizing economic and technological issues.
09:17The spokesperson further indicated that China will firmly safeguard the legitimate interests
09:22of Chinese enterprises.
09:28Indian lawmakers disrupted the ordinary session of parliament by rallying against the alleged
09:34inappropriate treatment of deputies from the U.S.
09:37The opposition legislators denounced that the U.S. military plane returned 140 Indian
09:42migrants wearing shackles on their arms and legs.
09:46Authorities described the action as an insult to India.
09:50Hence, they demanded a debate on the violation of human rights in the way U.S. officers had
09:55made the arrests.
09:56Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Ministry officials pointed out that the target of India must
10:02be fighting off illegal migration.
10:07This place, Palestinians face new hardships as strong winds have caused extensive damage
10:29to their tents, especially in the central city of Deir al-Bala.
10:33In this sense, many people have seen their plastic tents completely destroyed, leaving
10:38them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.
10:41The harsh weather has not only stripped them of their shelters, but also of the few remaining
10:46possessions they had managed to salvage.
10:48Meanwhile, military authorities reported strong winds ravaged the Gaza Strip on Thursday,
10:54resulting in the death of two Israeli soldiers and injured two aid holders.
10:58The accident happened earlier in the morning in the newly established Israeli buffer zone
11:03within Gaza.
11:05In this regard, one soldier is critically injured while the remaining seven have moderate
11:10to minor injuries.
11:18The Israeli government ordered on Thursday to prepare the ground for a mass exodus plan
11:23for the population on the Gaza Strip, following U.S. President Donald Trump's proposal for
11:29the forced displacement of Palestinians.
11:32Through a communiqué, Israel's Defense Minister Yisrael Katz informed that Gazans will allegedly
11:38be free to emigrate to nations willing to receive them.
11:41The minister further assured them that measures will be taken to evacuate them by air and
11:46sea if necessary.
11:48The statement comes after the U.S. President unveiled a plan to expel nearly two million
11:54Palestinians from the Strip, which has been condemned by several countries and denounced
11:58as a way to achieve the ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.
12:09The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Israel, Gideon Sa'ar, announced on Wednesday that
12:13the country will leave the United Nations Human Rights Council following in the steps
12:17of the U.S. administration.
12:20The minister accused the Human Rights Council of making efforts to demonize the Tel Aviv
12:25regime by passing over 100 condemnatory resolutions.
12:29The Israeli withdrawal comes amid recent international pressure aimed at holding the Israeli authorities
12:35accountable for the genocide in the Gaza Strip.

13:17Australian Parliament unanimously passed a bill condemning hate crimes across the nation.
13:22The bill obtained 117 votes in favour and 13 against and it aims to safeguard new traits
13:29such as race, religion and gender.
13:31Thus, the approved regulation amendments stipulate mandatory prison sentences for crimes of terrorism
13:37and exhibition of hate symbols.
13:39The policy has come out in view of increasing attacks by some religious groups that had

13:50to different ideologies.
14:07The United Nations Children's Fund UNICEF warned of high pollution in East Asia and
14:12the Pacific regions.
14:13According to the agency, some 500 million children in these regions live amid unhealthy
14:18levels of air pollution that can fuel chronic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular
14:23pathologies.
14:24In addition, the agency stated that 373 million children live in places with unhealthy levels
14:31of nitrogen dioxide, a gas produced by vehicles, factories and power plants, which aggravates
14:37asthma and other respiratory infections.
14:40Moreover, other consequences include brain development difficulties and risk of school
14:45closures, which can severely affect the children's education.
14:54In Brazil, authorities reported that at least seven people died in the city of Recife, capital
14:58of the state of Pernambuco, after heavy rainfall.
