00:00Palestinians expect the truth to be fulfilled, therefore they denounce the Israeli bombardment
00:14of Gaza in the midst of the ceasefire celebrations.
00:20Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab sent an open letter to Colombian President
00:25Gustavo Petro on Thursday in response to Petro's latest statements in social media about the
00:30Venezuelan situation.
00:34The United States National Weather Service issued an alert over high winds that could
00:39hinder the fire-mitigating efforts in areas of California.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Caracas, Venezuela.
00:54To begin with the news, stay with us.
01:12Palestinians expect the truth to be fulfilled, which is why they denounce the Israeli bombardment
01:17of Gaza in the midst of the ceasefire celebrations.
01:20Hours after the ceasefire announcement, Palestinians claimed that Israeli forces intensified their
01:26incursions and attacks on central and southern Gaza.
01:29The civil Gazan defense reported having recovered at least 73 corpses due to strikes of Israeli
01:35fighter planes on Wednesday evening.
01:38Moreover, the entity specified that the death toll comprised around 20 children and 25 women.
01:44Regarding the ceasefire agreement authorities unfolded, it is planned to be pursued in stages
01:50for six weeks, which will be enforced as of Sunday, January 19.
01:55Among the fundamental issues agreed were the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from
02:00Gaza and the release of hostages by Hamas' resistance movement.
02:08If Allah wants, this truce will be good for us, in spite of the wounds, in spite of the
02:12pain, in spite of the dead and the wounded, and those who were isolated, we thank Allah,
02:16we wish safety for our people in the south and that we can see them, take care of them
02:20and meet with them, despite the pain and the houses that were destroyed, but, if Allah
02:24wants, it will end well.
02:36We had hoped that the ceasefire would coincide with the cessation of the Zionist attacks
02:40that are still underway.
02:42Shall we wait until next Sunday?
02:45Hundreds of people will die yesterday.
02:47There was a strike on Jabalia and Khan Yunis.
02:50So we were hoping from the Mediator brothers, the Hamas brothers and all the responsible
02:54to get a general truce and an immediate ceasefire for the sake of the Palestinian people, for
03:00safeguarding what is left of the blood of the Palestinian people.
03:08On Thursday, in the Palestinian city of Ramallah, hundreds of students from Peace Rates University
03:14protested to denounce the continuous attacks on Gaza and the crimes in the West Bank.
03:19The demonstrators demanded an immediate end to the attacks on Gaza while raising the Palestinian
03:24flag.
03:25In addition, the protesters displayed posters and photos denouncing the genocide perpetrated
03:30by Israel against the Palestinians and the territory.
03:34Moreover, the students called for an immediate halt to the incursions and bombardments that
03:39they have left thousands of martyrs, mostly women, children and the elderly.
03:49Demonstrators rallied Thursday in the French capital Paris in favour of Palestine and called
03:55for a boycott against Israel athletes participating in a basketball game.
04:00The protest was held at the Porte de la Chapelle and was organised by pro-Palestinian groups
04:06such as Urgence Palestine and Extinction Rebellion.
04:11The demonstrators opposed what they termed spot-washing or the use of sports events to
04:17normalise or improve the international image of the state of Israel.
04:21They carried placards with slogans like we don't play with genocide and called to cancel
04:28the match as a symbolic rejection of normalisation with Israel.
04:32The basketball match was between the Paris Basket and the Maccabi Tel Aviv.
04:41Yemen's armed forces welcomed the announcement of agreement between Hamas and Israel on ceasefire
04:46in Gaza.
04:47The advisor to the Supreme Political Council, Abdulillah Hajjar, expressed that the group
04:54is proud and honoured by the steadfastness of the support to the Palestinian people.
04:59In this sense, Ila Hajjar reiterated the support to Palestine until the end of the Israeli
05:04genocidal war against the nation.
05:07The high official assured that they will fulfil their promise to stop the offensive against
05:12the Tel Aviv regime once the Israeli aggressions against Gaza cease.
05:16China joins nations welcoming the news of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip.
05:25The nation's spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wu Yaqin, expressed the
05:30Asian giant's views in the following way.
05:34China welcomes the agreement on the Gaza ceasefire and hostage swap and it hopes that the agreement
05:39can be effectively implemented so that a comprehensive and permanent ceasefire in Gaza can be achieved
05:44soon.
05:47The spokesperson further emphasized that China will make efforts to continue providing
05:52humanitarian aid and support in the reconstruction of Palestine.
05:59Since the onset of the current round of the conflict in Gaza, China has always called
06:03for a ceasefire, de-escalation of the situation, protection of civilians and humanitarian assistance.
06:09China supports the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and it will continue providing humanitarian
06:14assistance to Gaza.
06:15In addition, China will make positive efforts in the post-war reconstruction in Gaza.
06:44Welcome back from the south.
06:46Venezuelan Attorney General Tarek William Saab sent an open letter to Colombian President
06:51Gustavo Petro on Thursday in response to Petro's latest statements in social media about Venezuela.
06:58In his letter, William Saab expressed his surprise for the Colombian president's remarks
07:03and contrasted them with the emancipation ideals for the great homeland that both had
07:08shared in the past.
07:09The Attorney General also reminded Petro that it was from Colombian territory that
07:14mercenaries trained and hired by a foreign company infiltrated into Venezuela to unleash
07:21a bloodbath in full view of the Colombian authorities and that to this day not a single
07:27person has been detained for those acts.
07:31On the other hand, the Venezuelan official let the Colombian president know that more
07:35than 1,500 people detained during the violent actions that followed the July 28th elections
07:43have been released and that the Prosecutor's Office continues to review other cases in
07:48order to provide the benefits of the law to those who are entitled to them.
07:53Finally, William Saab reiterated that Venezuela has defended democracy, stability and internal
07:59peace in an exemplary manner, with full respect for constitutional warranties and human rights.
08:09Mexico's President Claudio Chamberlain responded to statements made by U.S. Senator Marco Rubio
08:15in which he insisted that drug cartels should be considered terrorists.
08:20The head of state pointed out that declaring drug trafficking organizations as terrorist
08:25groups implies many things and she said that she would only consider the good side of Rubio's
08:31statements.
08:32In this sense, Chamberlain welcomed the intentions that, according to politicians, the U.S. State
08:38Department has to coordinate alliances with Mexico for the benefit of both nations on
08:44security issues.
08:45In this context, Chamberlain pointed out that these same proposals are the ones that the
08:50Mexican government has been putting forward and described them as good.
08:59I take Marco Rubio's word for it.
09:02In this interview he gave during his ratification in the Senate,
09:06he says two very important things, which is what we have been saying.
09:09One is that the Department of State favors coordination with the Mexican government and
09:13that is what we have been talking about, and to address the problems of migration,
09:18the problems of security, the drug trafficking.
09:28The best way to address the problems of migration and drug trafficking is to work with the U.S.
09:36The best thing to do is to coordinate with the Mexican government, as well as to coordinate
09:41at the highest level.
09:42And respecting our sovereignty we can collaborate and coordinate to reduce the criminal incidents
09:46in Mexico, to avoid the trafficking of weapons from the United States to Mexico, and at the
10:01same time we can contribute in everything necessary to reduce the fentanyl crisis they
10:07are facing in the United States.
10:12Likewise, the Mexican head of state described the statements made by Senator Marco Rubio
10:17regarding coordination with Donald Trump's administration as positive.
10:25That was a very good thing in his statement, that the State Department would seek coordination
10:30with the Mexican government.
10:31That is exactly what we have been proposing.
10:34So this is good news in the sense that as soon as President Trump takes office with
10:38his team, there will be an opportunity for this high-level conversation that is so important
10:42to take place.
10:50Social organizations in Argentina participated in a caravan through the capital Buenos Aires
10:55to demand the release of indigenous leader Milagro Sala from the Tupac Amaru Association,
11:00who has been detained for nine years.
11:03This way, the organizations, joined by human rights activists, march in a caravan for freedom
11:09to demand an end to the harassment, judicial and political persecution against the social
11:14leader.
11:15The mobilization took over the city's main avenues and its journey from the Congress
11:19Square to Sala's home, where she has been held under house arrest since January 2016.
11:26The leader's detention for alleged incitement to violence happened after she led a proposal
11:32against changes imposed by former Jujuy Province Governor Gerardo Morales.
11:41Our political prisoner, the first political prisoner of the Macri government, who began
11:46her ordeal at that time and who continues today serving nine years.
11:52It is an abuse because it is an attack on the essential rights of any human being.
11:59After all, they have created a rotten justice system, a rotten judiciary and political power
12:04that has abandoned her and condemned her for being a woman, for being a indigenous woman
12:09and for being a popular military woman.
12:17To try to pay tribute to an exceptional social leader like Malagro Sala,
12:25who I believe was enduring the repression of a system for being an indigenous woman,
12:33for being a woman, for being poor and also for having stood out as an important personality.
12:39Ecuador's Vice President Veronica Abad has questioned the Armed Forces' support for
12:44President Daniel Novoa during the electoral process. The official pointed out that the
12:49public force should defend the constitution of the republic and not a person. This after
12:54the military institutions were in favor of Novoa. She also denounced that the electoral
12:59process of February 9th could be jeopardized by the judiciary and the armed forces.
13:08Meanwhile, the Central Bank of Ecuador reported that the national economy contracted by more
13:13than 1.5 percent in the third quarter of 2024 compared to 2023. The financial entity
13:20detailed in its report that the inter-annual contractions of the components of expenditure,
13:25such as the formation of fixed capital, is in 6.2 percent.

14:12Welcome back to From the South. The United States National Weather Service issued an alert
14:23over high winds that could hinder the fire mitigating efforts in areas of California.
14:28The Meteorological Authority forecast that winds could reach up to 100 kilometers per hour in the
14:34mountain regions of the counties of Los Angeles and Ventura. At the same time, and in spite of
14:39firefighters' efforts, the wildfires continue raging in Eaton and the Palisades, where they
14:45have left at least 25 people dead and 26 missing, in addition to burning down over 120,000 structures
14:54and more than 16,000 hectares. In this context, the Los Angeles County has declared a public
15:00health emergency warning the population of the potential threat of smoke inhalation.
15:10The Belarus Security Council denounces the possible mobilization of foreign intelligence
15:14services ahead of the elections on January 26. The entity noted that there are reports
15:21that foreign special services are probing the territory in search of flashpoints
15:26and detonators to carry out provocations to destabilize the situation in the country.
15:31The Security Council also condemned that the United States and its allies continue their
15:36strategies of legal, political and economic pressure, with the aim of
15:40changing the current government and breaking the alliance with the nation of Russia.
15:49In South Africa, police announced the end of the rescue operation of the Buffalo's
15:53forested illegal gold mine in which 78 people were killed. The commissioner in charge stated
16:01that the extractions from the mine are complete. However, authorities will conduct a further
16:06subway sweep to ensure that no one else is inside the mine. Of the 246 people found alive,
16:13128 are Mozambicans, 80 from Lesotho, 33 are Zimbabweans and five are South Africans.
16:21But for now, we can confirm that the cage of the mine rescue services has gone down to ascertain
16:32whether what the volunteers told us yesterday is indeed true,
16:38that there are no longer any illegal miners down there.
16:43While President-elect of Mozambique Daniel Chapo was holding his swearing-in ceremony in Maputo,
16:55regional riots have bursted out against him, which claim around eight civilian lives in
17:01Maputo and Manampula northern cities. In recent presidential elections,
17:05the candidate of the Liberation Front of Mozambique won, as he obtained 65.17% of ballots.
17:12As a result, the opposition took to the streets of the capital to rally against the president in
17:17an attempt to sabotage his swearing-in act. However, the police prevented these opponents
17:23from reaching the official event. The island of Vanuatu is holding early elections a month
17:33after a devastating earthquake struck the South Pacific nation. Local television footage showed
17:40of voters in the capital Port Vila on Thursday, although many are expected to be unable to vote
17:46because they have been displaced by the quake, which killed at least 14 people,
17:52injured some 210 and displaced thousands.
17:56In northern Thailand, engineer and farmer Tania Pong Jak Yam, alongside villagers,
18:04paid homage to local victims of lately flash floods by turning a two-acre potty field
18:10into an artwork outlining several symbolic animals. The initiative came to fruition
18:16in the early morning hours of the morning, when a group of villagers gathered together
18:21outlining several symbolic animals. The initiative came to fruition to bring local ties,
18:27hope and resilience by drawing on the fields red dragons, cats and dogs. In September 2024,
18:36villagers have faced devastating floods from which they are recovering nowadays. Therefore,
18:42the creator, along with 20 other people, came up with this action to boost agricultural production,
18:48harnessing AI technology, satellite imagery and agricultural techniques.
18:57The rice we grow is Khao Sapazi, that is rainbow rice,
19:01which has seven colors that together create this colorful artwork that we can see now.
