00:00A former Deputy Law and Institutional Reform Minister says he fears a repeat of the 1988

00:07judicial crisis unless urgent reforms are undertaken to protect judicial independence.

00:13Ram Kapil Singh said there was a need to overhaul the Judicial Appointments Commission Act 2009,

00:18adding that the Prime Minister's power to reject recommended judges must be removed

00:22to prevent any perception of executive interference.

00:25He said failure to act could undermine public confidence in the judiciary, pointing to the

00:291988 judicial crisis when the government sacked former Lord President Saleh Abbas and

00:34two Supreme Court judges, triggering a constitutional crisis.

00:38He also questioned the appointment of former Attorneys General as judges, asking if such

00:42appointments were appropriate.

00:44His concerns come just weeks after Chief Justice Tunku Maimun Tuan Mutt touched on judicial

00:49independence in her opening of the Legal Year 2025 speech.

00:53Tunku Maimun warned against executive influence in judicial appointments, recalling the damaging

00:58effects of the 1988 judicial crisis and the VK Linggum scandal where political connections

01:03allegedly influenced judicial promotions.
