00:00 But you know what, Gary? I don't think they're full as much as I think they will try to sell their fan base and the media on. This was a deal to make us better. This was a deal to make them better at keeping yachts. That to me is really was just the driving force behind this deal. Because Dan Willard is a better player. I loved holiday. I love all the day is a better player. And in their minds, we added the best player in all the play all the players in this deal. Milwaukee was getting the best player
00:29 without question. But to me, the one thing that made Milwaukee such a good team is that the championship wasn't because they had the best players is because they had the best fit of players around yachts.
00:41 The A-List Podcast is brought to you by FanDuel, the exclusive wedgerig partner of the CLNS Media Network.
00:48 Hello, everyone. Welcome into the last episode of the A-List Podcast until Celtics Media Day. I almost got y'all. Y'all got everybody was she knows something that we don't. I'm resigning. I'm kidding. No, that's not happening. Yes.
01:03 Hey, Sean Blakely, Gary Washburn. I'm Quanie Lunas. We are recording just as the biggest news, of course, because we always have to get a word bomb right before the season starts.
01:14 Damian Lillard is coming to the Eastern Conference. He's going to Milwaukee in exchange. Portland, they're going to get Drew Holiday, DeAndre Ayton and some unprotected first round picks from Milwaukee.
01:27 It's all messy, but honestly, the highlight really very much so. Damian Lillard going to Milwaukee, which in turn very much so impacts the Celtics in their run for the championship.
01:39 So let's just get into it. What is your reaction? How does the Eastern Conference play out, shake out now that Damian is on the good side?
01:49 Well, here's the thing. Milwaukee, you know, for a really good two, three years was they won a championship and they were in that short list of title contenders.
02:00 But clearly the last couple of years, they look a little bit sketchy. They look a little bit of a shame.
02:06 And really, as much as we want to talk about this being a deal to put Milwaukee back in the title contention conversation, this deal was really about making not as happy.
02:17 This was this this deal was more about making sure that you gave yourself the best shot to keep your best player in the fold for years to come.
02:24 And Giannis made it very clear that he is not trying to be on a team that's not contending or at least putting the pieces in place to contend.
02:32 Now, that's Damian Lillard is a definite talent upgrade.
02:37 The problem is that Damian Lillard, like all NBA players, Father Time has the binoculars out and sees Damian Lillard.
02:47 He's coming for Damian Lillard.
02:49 He's not there yet. Damian's got, I think, a good two elite years left in him.
02:53 But after that, I think it might be a painful drop off.
02:57 And remember, he's a small guard.
02:58 So defensively, there's some concerns that Milwaukee is going to have to address in that regard.
03:03 But in terms of overall talent, definite upgrade, it definitely puts them at a minimum, a team that you're talking about potentially coming out of the East.
03:11 Yeah, I mean, I'm I was stunned because Milwaukee's throwing all of its chips in the middle of the table, but you give up Drew Holiday.
03:23 That's a lot. He's one of the best two way guards in the league.
03:27 Good defender is Cable scoring 30 points in a game.
03:32 You know, he's one of those guys that when you know, when he when he gets going, he gets hot.
03:37 He's hard to stop.
03:40 And you're giving him up.
03:41 And as well as Grayson Allen, who played a good, good piece for them, they lost Joe Ingles went to went to Orlando.
03:47 So now you're playing with Dame, with Brooke Lopez, Bobby Portis, you know, Middleton coming off injury like as much as I think it's a blockbuster trade.
03:58 And it's a lot to talk about. I'm not so sure this makes Milwaukee appreciably better because you give up your best defensive guard when your best defender, you say, is your best defender.
04:10 And maybe Lopez second or third.
04:13 But Drew's definitely number two, if he's not their best defender.
04:17 And with Dame, like Shiraz said, he can score, but he's not a great defender.
04:27 And so, yeah, Milwaukee's going to have two of the top 75 players, two all-stars, two all NBA players.
04:36 And if you want to include Middleton, who hasn't quite been at that level because of injury, that's a great trio.
04:43 But I'm just concerned about losing that defender, that dog, that guy who can stop people, who can make that key steal like he did a couple of years ago against the Celtics, the Cincin game.
04:57 Like, to me, that's a lot just to get Dame.
05:01 They didn't get any help other than that just to get Dame.
05:06 So it's a risky move.
05:09 And so, you know, Milwaukee's a good team, but how deep are they?
05:14 And now you've got to put really old.
05:16 They were older with Lopez.
05:19 You know, Giannis is not young.
05:22 He's not old. He's 28, 29.
05:24 So it's not like he old.
05:25 Giannis is prime.
05:26 Middleton, injury-prone, over 30.
05:30 And now you add a 33-year-old Dame Lillard, who is capable of scoring 70 points, as we've seen, one of the great scorers as a point guard of our generation.
05:41 But the other element stopping people, and we don't know how this is all going to work under a new coach.
05:47 It's not Boutenhoser anymore.
05:49 It's Adrian Griffin.
05:50 We have no clue what kind of system is going to be run.
05:53 I've, you know, no doubt that Griffin's going to be a good coach.
05:56 He's been waiting his turn.
05:58 He's a good, we've known him since he's been in the league as a player.
06:02 But like, that's a lot to lose your best defender.
06:06 I think Milwaukee gave up quite a bit with the draft picks.
06:09 Yeah, but Grayson Allen, who was their kind of one of their three-point shooters, guy who could, you know, defend.
06:15 We all know he's got a reputation.
06:17 But then Drew Holiday, boy, that's a lot.
06:20 You know, now we all know Holiday's entering the last year of his deal.
06:24 So they're going to have to probably extend him or whatever, but that's a lot.
06:29 I don't know if Milwaukee got appreciably better.
06:31 I think they're different and they're interesting, but I don't know if they're much better.
06:36 But you know what, Gary?
06:38 I don't think they're full, as much as I think they will try to sell their fan base and the media on,
06:43 "This was a deal to make us better."
06:44 This was a deal to make them better at keeping yards.
06:48 That, to me, really was just the driving force behind this deal.
06:52 Because Dave Miller is a better player than Drew Holiday.
06:55 I love Drew Holiday.
06:56 I love all of them.
06:57 But Dave is a better player.
06:59 And in their minds, we added the best player in all the players in this deal.
07:04 Milwaukee was getting the best player without question.
07:07 But to me, the one thing that made Milwaukee such a good team and such a champion team
07:12 wasn't because they had the best players.
07:14 It's because they had the best fit of players around Yonnas.
07:18 And this deal, I think, raises a lot of concerns about whether they may have improved from a talent standpoint
07:25 by adding Dave, but do they have that ideal championship fit that brought them a championship a couple years ago?
07:34 And when you look at teams in this era, there's such parity that it really isn't about having the most talent.
07:41 It's having the most talent that fits together.
07:43 And those are two completely separate things.
07:46 As we've seen, you go back and you look at that Brooklyn team, when you had Kyrie, you had James Harden, and you had Durant.
07:52 And they never could figure it out.
07:53 They could never stay healthy enough to figure it out.
07:55 But even when they were healthy, they weren't exactly getting it done at a high level.
08:00 And so Milwaukee is a better team now from a keeping Yonnas standpoint.
08:05 But I want to put them on that short list, but I still think the Celtics are a better team.
08:14 I still think at the end of the day, from top to bottom, Boston is a better team.
08:18 Get ready for the NFL season with incredible offers from FanDuel, America's number one sports book.

08:48 So visit FanDuel.com/Boston.
08:51 Kick off the NFL season with an offer you won't want to miss.
08:54 FanDuel, official partner of the NFL.
08:58 OK, so to that point, let's look at Boston now.
09:06 That's called a segue, Quan.
09:08 You see that? You see that?
09:09 Yeah, that was good. That was beautiful.
09:11 So that being said, though, the what are some of the issues, would you say, that are affecting
09:16 this team that we're looking forward to watching this season?
09:19 We can start with Tatum and Brownling, the expectations.
09:22 What exactly are fans looking for and what should they be looking for?
09:27 What you got, Gary?
09:28 Um, I mean, it sounds like they got a full team, like I talked to Brad Stevens
09:34 at the Garden, he told me Rodden is healthy and ready to report.
09:41 Will be there media day.
09:42 That was a big question.
09:43 And also Chris asked Porzingis, that's good news.
09:46 Rodden is a guy who's going to play a key role this year.
09:49 In addition to being a six man, he's probably got to play some point guard.
09:53 He's going to have to be better defensively and maybe they could sacrifice the scoring.
09:57 But they're going to need a lot from him this year.
10:00 And he's going to be need to be mentally engaged and forget about what happened in July
10:03 and almost being traded to the Clippers.
10:04 Porzingis, you want to put him on bubble wrap.
10:09 You want to make sure he's ready to go for opening night.
10:11 So whatever kind of reduced schedule you want to give him during the preseason,
10:15 do it, make sure he's ready.
10:17 So you're trying to get 70 games out of Chris Stapps, Porzingis.
10:20 Robert Williams, big, big year for Robert Williams.
10:24 You know, a lot of it's a big year for a lot of people.
10:27 Obviously, Tatum and Brown, Tatum's approaching his extension.
10:30 Brown, now highest paid player in the NBA.
10:33 He's got to start approaching that.
10:35 I don't think he's the best player in the NBA.
10:36 I think we all agree on that.
10:38 But he's got to get that top two, sorry, top, you know, two or three team,
10:43 you know, all NBA top, you know, 10 player.
10:46 He's got to play like that this year.
10:48 And to me, we can talk about that later.
10:51 But the additions, Lamar Stevens, the dog, like I thought I thought Brad is
10:56 finally put some real players on the bench.
11:00 Not good guys, not towel wavers, not guys who will,
11:06 you know, some real dogs on the bench, fill the bench up.
11:09 If somebody don't get minutes, hey, you're playing on championship
11:13 caliber team, deal with it, as opposed to, hey,
11:16 we have a bunch of nice guys who are good teammates and,
11:19 you know, we'll get you a Gatorade quick.
11:21 No, no, no, no, we don't need that.
11:22 We don't need that, right?
11:26 You need dogs.
11:27 The Celtics now have some dogs with Lamar Stevens, with
11:30 Shiraz's buddy, Hoshie Brissett.
11:34 This is what you're going to get, what's wrong with Delano, Delano Banton,
11:39 with guys, you know, who are going to be key to the kid from Sacramento
11:44 on a two way, you know, he's playing with a lot of desire.
11:47 He's looking for his shot.
11:49 So I like this team, Kwame.
11:52 I think there are a lot to look forward to.
11:54 Is this health and just chemistry getting that chemistry first year,
11:59 full year for Missoula?
12:01 It's a lot to look forward to.
12:02 And like Shiraz said, I do think there's still better
12:06 than the Milwaukee Bucks.
12:08 You know, the Bucks lost a lot.
12:10 You know, you lost Drew, you lost like their bench, like, you know,
12:13 they don't have they don't have the depth that they once had.
12:17 So that puts a lot of pressure on the starters.
12:20 We'll see what happens.
12:23 I. OK.
12:26 Drake, Drake.
12:30 Oh, boy.
12:32 We were just talking about guys.
12:34 They ever get drinks quick on a bench.
12:36 I just want to make sure you get good.
12:39 Good, Gary. You good.
12:41 He needed a drink.
12:42 I'm fine. Have a seat.
12:45 Listen, I'm excited about this.
12:47 So it's the end, because to me, they got guys who want to scrap.
12:50 They got guys who want to get it.
12:53 And their lead dogs, Jalen and Jason, they each have something to prove.
12:59 And they're at that point in their careers where it ain't about promise.
13:04 It ain't about potential.
13:05 It's about getting the job done.
13:07 It's about getting that chip.
13:08 And it's about leading this team in a way that you haven't done up to this point.
13:12 And so I think part of what Gary was talking about,
13:16 about Brad is kind of the assembling of this team.
13:19 It's comes from the fact of just getting your ass kicked as a coach.
13:24 Brad saw firsthand would not have enough dogs in the kennel.
13:28 Looks like he knows when you get to the playoffs.
13:30 You need guys to scrap a little bit.
13:32 You need guys in practice who can scrap a little bit.
13:34 Because the way you practice it often, how you play in games.
13:37 And so they've got guys now, I think, that play with a little bit more
13:41 chip in this little bit more edge who play with something to prove.
13:44 Much more so than some of the other teams he's had with guys
13:47 who just thankful that they had a job in it.
13:50 And they really weren't trying to do much more than be thankful
13:52 that they had a job in the NBA.
13:54 Yeah. You know, and some they get to Gatorade during games.
13:58 You know, they'll open the door for you going to the practice facility.
14:01 You know, let you hold the car, keys to the car.
14:03 If you need to go to 7-11 or somewhere, pick something up.
14:06 They got anything and everything you need except that edge.
14:10 They don't bring that.
14:11 And now Brad has got guys who have a legitimate edge.
14:15 And I'm looking forward to seeing him play.
14:17 I'm looking forward to seeing guys, you know, deliver hard fouls,
14:22 make tough plays in traffic and force Joe to make some hard calls
14:26 in terms of his rotation, because I think, you know, in a perfect world,
14:30 you want to have six or seven guys that you can count on every night
14:33 to go out and give you something.
14:34 And usually have a legitimate fight for that eighth, that ninth rotation spot.
14:40 And you want it to be so that guys understand that every day in practice,
14:44 every game you play, you fight to get on the floor.
14:47 And that man next to you, your teammate, yeah, you're going to support him,
14:50 but you try to kick his ass too.
14:52 And so having more guys in that frame of mind,
14:55 I think is just critical.
14:57 And when I look over at teams like Milwaukee, I look at Miami,
15:00 I look at some of the other top teams in the East.
15:02 I just don't see the talent, that dog, depth.
15:08 I just don't see them when you pick all those things together and add them up
15:11 and you start stacking what they got compared to Boston.
15:13 I just don't see them being in the same class as Boston.
15:17 Boston to me is a clear head and shoulders above the rest of the East.
15:22 So there's no one in the East that you would say is the biggest threat to the Celtics?
15:26 I'm afraid of none of them.
15:27 Here's the thing.
15:29 If it comes down to this, play your game, team two through 15,
15:34 and Celtics play your game.
15:35 Yeah.
15:36 Boston is going to win at a best of seven.
15:38 If everything, if everyone is healthy and playing like the way they are capable of,
15:42 Boston is going to win every single one of those matchups.
15:44 Every single one.
15:45 Teams, if for Boston to not get to the NBA finals,
15:48 it is going to be more about what they don't do
15:51 or what they're lacking in terms of health and things like that
15:54 than it is the opponent.
15:55 There's no way right now to match up with them.
15:57 Nope.
15:59 Not happening.
16:00 Gary, you agree?
16:01 Yeah, I still think the Celts are the best team in the East.
16:05 I don't think, I'm not going to say they don't have a threat.
16:08 I mean,
16:09 I would.
16:10 Thank you, Sharet.
16:13 I would.
16:14 I think you're going to have to see what happens over the next couple of weeks.
16:18 Now that the litter thing is resolved,
16:20 where does Drew Holiday go?
16:22 Because I don't think he's going to stay in Portland.
16:23 Does he go to the East, back to the East?
16:25 And what happens in Philadelphia with James Harden?
16:27 So, because that affects
16:30 two teams.
16:32 Could you put, could, could the,
16:34 do the Heat have enough to acquire Drew Holiday from Portland?
16:38 Could they work out a deal?
16:39 Maybe we're Tyler Hero and get Drew Holiday.
16:41 So now you got Jimmy Butler and Drew Holiday.
16:44 That'd be scary combination, defensive combination, all the,
16:47 and you know, Miami's going to find players to make up the,
16:50 the Haywood High Smiths.
16:51 Watch out for a dude who's kind of come out,
16:55 kind of come out of nowhere named Orlando Robinson,
16:57 who's dominating summer league.
16:58 And they,
16:59 You like that dude.
16:59 I do. I do.
17:01 Cause I, he probably could have helped out last year.
17:03 He played a good chunk of the season last year.
17:05 Then when he was on a two way, so he didn't play in the playoffs,
17:08 but now he's going, they're going to,
17:10 they're going to need him because they lost a lot.
17:12 And then we don't know,
17:14 like there's Cleveland, Cleveland added,
17:17 George's Nying and Max Struess.
17:20 The Knicks are the Knicks going to be in year two with Brunson
17:24 and Randall and Barrett that, that, that trio,
17:27 like there's a lot of teams that are sneaky,
17:29 you know, sneaky, but there's no team that you're like,
17:34 Oh, wow. Okay.
17:36 That team is going scares me.
17:39 If I'm a Celtic fan,
17:40 now I think the sellers are capable.
17:42 Even Milwaukee, you figure out how to defend them.
17:46 You know, they've defended Dame well in years.
17:49 I, you know, but the funny thing is when they played at Portland,
17:52 they shut them down to the fourth quarter.
17:54 Then he had like, did he score 21 straight points?
17:57 And it almost brought him back. Right.
18:01 And it was like, Oh boy, like, you know,
18:03 you can play three great courts against the defense against Lillard.
18:06 The score is 25 in the fourth.
18:08 But I think they'll figure out a way to figure this whole thing out.
18:14 And I think the Celtics right now are still the favorites.
18:17 Now, the odds might have gone down a little bit in Vegas
18:19 and on FanDuel about their odds against the Bucks.
18:24 But I don't look at another team.
18:26 I'm looking Philadelphia. You got issues.
18:28 The Knicks, are they ready?
18:31 You know, they got Dante DiFrancisco.
18:33 But they're basically the same team as last year.
18:37 We don't know.
18:38 Is there a is there a sleeper team that's going to come up?
18:40 People are talking about Indiana.
18:41 Is there a sleeper team that comes up and suddenly wins 50 games
18:46 that we have we don't talking about is Atlanta?
18:49 You know, who knows?
18:50 I'm not going to it's likely not going to happen.
18:52 But this is the Celtics year.
18:56 Even if if Milwaukee, as they are to me,
19:01 just me personally, me, myself,
19:03 me, myself personally.
19:06 Oh, my goodness.
19:08 When when I would be personally more afraid
19:14 of the the championship
19:16 Milwaukee team in twenty one than the team now.
19:19 That's just my personal assessment of the Bucks.
19:23 Like I think they're good team.
19:26 I think Dan's a great player.
19:28 But I also think.
19:30 I lose a holiday is not
19:34 that is it well now, if they had got him a holiday now, be like, hey, man,
19:39 yeah, we talk different.
19:43 The fact that they gave up, give up their best defensive guard,
19:46 all defensive team, first team perennial guy
19:48 to get a guy who don't play defense, who's getting old,
19:53 who's getting older, but who's a who's a real dog.
19:56 Dave's a dog. We all know that.
19:59 Yeah, we'll see.
20:01 So as you were talking, I did look up the odds just out of curiosity.
20:06 So good job, good job, good job.
20:08 You know, so I know that.
20:10 Huh? Good research.
20:12 Exactly. You're pretty good at this hosting thing.
20:14 Go ahead. Thank you.
20:15 So the Celtics three weeks ago, there was an article on
20:19 FanDuel.com that had the Celtics at four plus four seventy
20:23 with the highest odds to win a championship.
20:26 The Nuggets behind them at plus four eighty bucks at the Bucks at plus six hundred.
20:30 So today's latest update on Fansel has the Milwaukee Bucks at the top
20:36 with the highest odds, plus 360 to win the championship.
20:41 Now, Denver is now in second and the Celtics have now shifted.
20:44 So there will they're tied at four eighty plus four eighty.
20:47 The Nuggets and Celtics.
20:48 So it's very interesting that that move did somehow change and shift the books.
20:54 Because people, I mean, people would disagree with you, too, I guess.
20:58 They don't think the Celtics is the best.
21:00 Well, it's a sexy pick to go with Milwaukee now because of the trade.
21:05 When you pair a guy of Giannis's stature with with Dame.
21:09 Yeah, they're going to be really good because of those two guys.
21:12 But we're talking about a season.
21:15 We're talking about winning a championship.
21:17 And I don't think they have the pieces around them now to do that,
21:21 because as important as it is to have your go to guy,
21:24 you got to have the right complimentary pieces around.
21:26 You look at that Denver Nuggets team.
21:28 You know, they they've got the greatest
21:31 triple double guy going right now at the center position.
21:34 But you look at the way that Gordon played,
21:36 you look at the way that our boy Bruce Brown was balling out.
21:39 You start going down the line.
21:40 Their role players played an all star role player level.
21:44 And Milwaukee, I don't think has the talent around them to do that.
21:49 And then you come over to Boston.
21:50 And yes, you got Jason and you got Jalen.
21:52 But then you got the six man of the year, Malcolm Brogdon.
21:55 You got five time all star Hal Horford.
21:58 You got an all defensive big in time.
22:00 You had a guy like Brazilians who can get you 20 and 10
22:03 and not even be a number one option.
22:05 You start looking at the Celtics roster
22:07 and you start looking at their receipts that they're putting on the table.
22:10 I don't see how you can look at Milwaukee and be like, you're better.
22:13 I just don't see. I just don't see it.
22:15 They've got great star power at the top of the food chain.
22:18 But then you start starving.
22:19 Further down you go, you're not eating good no more.
22:22 You went from Bruce Chris to, you know,
22:26 put some hood stuff in good, good, good stuff.
22:30 From Chris to Chris.
22:35 We have. Wow.
22:39 Well, honey, I was fighting to get a joke out of that one, too.
22:42 Chris, you know, funny.
22:45 I'm looking at the Bucks, Bucks, bitch. Right.
22:49 Right now. And it's like they got a big
22:53 they got some guys that like they're older.
22:56 Like, let's be honest.
22:57 They got our friend, our friend Robin Lopez and Brook Lopez.
23:02 They signed Robin.
23:03 So they got the Lopez twins.
23:04 They're thirty five.
23:06 Chris Middleton is thirty two.
23:08 Remember, Jay Crowder is still there.
23:10 He's thirty three now.
23:13 He's still there.
23:14 Still there like rerun at Jefferson High School.
23:17 Still there.
23:18 Young, young folks look that up.
23:22 Anyway, they signed their biggest
23:24 offseason acquisition, besides Damian Lillard, was Malik Beasley,
23:29 the former Timberwolves.
23:30 He had a little stint with the Lakers.
23:32 Didn't really work out well with the Lakers, but that's their biggest
23:35 offseason acquisition.
23:37 They got a kid Marjan Bichamp, who I think is going to blossom
23:41 into a pretty good player.
23:42 Pat Connington is still there.
23:44 Arlington's own.
23:46 You know, they got got Bobby Portis,
23:50 who they they got guys who can play their role,
23:54 but no one on this roster after the big three kind of scares you.
23:58 And if you're asking Brook Lopez to come back with another
24:02 monster career year after having one at age thirty five,
24:06 like that's asking a lot.
24:09 Right. So if I'm I think the Celtics are.
24:13 Still primed and they still a good position.
24:19 But they need to just stay healthy
24:23 and quite honestly, get that chemistry right with Bazula.
24:29 And I think that they still are the favorites.
24:32 Because other than Al Horford, is there anyone in the top six or seven
24:36 who's over 30?
24:37 I don't think there is. Oh, no, no.
24:40 And a significant number of those guys are in their mid 20s
24:44 that they're not going to be hitting 30 for a couple more years.
24:46 So that's that's kind of why partly why I think the Celtics
24:51 are just a better than the rest.
24:53 All right. Well, we'll have more to talk about this,
24:56 obviously, for the rest of the season.
24:58 We promised Vinny Goodwill this week, but he was too busy for us.
25:02 So he'll actually be on next week as we still look forward to previewing
