00:00I am joined by Robert Griffin, the third, James White, Field, Yates, Mina Kimes.
00:14All right, so first play we're going to look at, second and two, one of the Patriots' first
00:17offensive plays.
00:18I can't see myself.
00:19Here we go.
00:20What's going on, everyone?
00:21I'm back.
00:22Mike Cadillac, Taylor Kyles here for CLNS Media, back with another episode of the Patriots
00:33Daily Podcast, powered by PrizePix and GameTime.
00:36And if you feel like there's a little bit more pep in my step as I intro this podcast,
00:40it's because there is, because damn it, Drake May is the Patriots' starting quarterback.
00:45We reacted to it last night on our crossover episode.
00:48We did some stand-ups, pre-recorded down in Foxborough today when we officially heard
00:51the news from Gerard Mayo.
00:53But this is our first time to kind of talk about it live on Pats Daily with you guys.
00:57So the plan here today, mailbag.
01:00You guys asked a ton of questions.
01:01It's funny how the Twitter interactions kind of start to creep up a little bit once Drake
01:05May is finally the starter.
01:06So a ton of questions from you guys on Twitter today.
01:10We can try and get to some in the chat after we answer the ones we've prioritized through
01:14Twitter.
01:15So if you do have questions next time, make sure you go to Twitter, throw them in there.
01:18We're going to do those ones first.
01:19But again, if you have questions, throw them in the chat, anything Drake May, anything
01:23Patriots, anything, anything Texans week, if they're not Drake May, that's okay.
01:27We're going to answer anything Patriots.
01:29But before we do, Taylor, let's dive into some film because you're the film guy and
01:33we can talk about Drake May film and actually apply it to things because he is starting
01:38for the Patriots this week.
01:39So let's talk about it.
01:40There is some, you put together some stuff on May, how he can perform on schedule, his
01:44athleticism as a quarterback, and then some stuff that we have to be cautious of.
01:48So Taylor, take it away.
01:50Yes, sir.
01:51So we're going to start with what Drake May can do on schedule.
01:54All right.
01:55All the off schedule stuff is great, but this is the crux of playing quarterback.
01:58And as much as Drake May is lauded for his athleticism, his ability to extend plays and
02:03all that, he at his heart of hearts is a pocket passer and that's what he wants to be.
02:08And there's plenty of examples that show he's got very good, you know, early traits for
02:12him to build on.
02:13So when he played against the Jets, I loved this throw that he had to DeMario Douglas.
02:19Now this was a driver.
02:20There was some back and forth.
02:21You know, he had some negative plays for sure.
02:22We'll get to those later, but this was my favorite throw that he had the entire drive.
02:26Now we're going to get it going.
02:28First of all, you're going to see that the snap comes before he's even ready.
02:31So Drake May is looking over here, just trying to see what's good in the balls coming here.
02:36It's okay though.
02:37He's ready for it.
02:38He adjusts to the snap.
02:39It's the top of his drop.
02:41He's got a rusher already coming down on him.
02:44Part of this is kind of Drake's fault because what he'll do sometimes is if he sees an edge
02:48defender go inside, they'll start to drift into that open space.
02:51But what's going to happen in the NFL, what happens sometimes in college is when one guy
02:55goes in, usually somebody else is coming around and that's what happens.
02:59This interior defender actually looped inside outside where Drake May was standing.
03:04He's not worried about it though.
03:06Subtle move back inside.
03:08Then he's going to throw this anticipation throwing to the spot past the linebacker.
03:13So DeMario Douglas is here when he's getting ready to throw, but he shows anticipation
03:17seeing that second window, completes it to DeMario Douglas to convert on fourth and 10.
03:23Now this is an example of processing.
03:25Okay.
03:26This was from the preseason against the Eagles on a third and five.
03:29I really loved this one.
03:31He told us after the game, this was actually a throw that he missed in practice and Jacoby
03:35Bursette was fired up for him because he did it in the game.
03:38So Drake May, this time it's a low snap from shotgun.
03:42Still able to keep his poise, get his eyes up.
03:45Actually looks to the right, but he sees that this is going to be a smash concept and
03:49both of these defenders have leverage on the routes.
03:52Really he doesn't even get to the top of his drop before he comes off of it.
03:55As you see, he's already moving his eyes.
03:58Now he's looking to the left and sees, okay, this is a high, low concept or a sucker concept.
04:03Now these two defenders are both going to converge on the route from Jalen Polk underneath.
04:08So Drake May says, bet you're going to give me the chunk throw.
04:11I'll take it.
04:12He's going to go to this route for Javon Baker again, showing anticipation by throwing
04:17to the spot, gets this ball out over the middle linebacker, complete to Javon Baker.
04:23First down.
04:24Third and five, two on third down.
04:26That's a ballsy throw right there.
04:27And here's an even tougher situation, third and 10 for Drake May.
04:32This was, I think the best throw that we've seen from him, even in like the summer.
04:36This was a beautiful, beautiful throw and recognition of the coverage he was getting.
04:40So Drake May is going to drop back and he's actually got what's called a cover for tricks
04:45technique or I'm sorry, split safety, but tricks technique where this defender is actually
04:50going to drop back deep.
04:51But this defender is actually going to read the inside route from the number three, the
04:56tight end.
04:57I think this might be Mitchell Wilcox, whoever it is.
04:59He knows that while they're zoned to this three receiver side, he's got man up top with
05:04Javon Baker.
05:05He likes that matchup.
05:07And then the most impressive part is he starts throwing this before Javon's even finished
05:11what was a corner post.
05:13So let's this one go deep downfield.
05:16Javon Baker runs under it.
05:19Beautiful throw in the bread basket.
05:21Unfortunately, Javon Baker upset himself.
05:23He can't bring this winning because it was a gorgeous throw from Drake May.
05:27Now this is an example of his pocket presence.
05:29This is going to be a second and two.
05:31The Patriots are going to go play action from under center.
05:34You're going to see the inside zone break from Drake May before he even gets to the
05:38top of his drop.
05:39He's got pressure off the left side.
05:41Doesn't matter.
05:42He's going to know that with his eyes upfield again, while he's getting pressured, he sees
05:47that there is going to be a vacancy because this defender is in man coverage.
05:51No one is going to be covering this part of the field.
05:54And look who's running into that part of the field, Jalen Pope.
05:57So once again, while being pressured as he's at the top of his drop, Drake May is going
06:01to hitch, hitch up, keep his eyes on the target, throw a beautiful pass.
06:07One more time, actually.
06:08I want to see this again.
06:09Jalen Pope over the middle, gets it out before the pass rusher can strip it and make a play
06:13on the ball.
06:14Beautiful, beautiful throw there from Drake May.
06:18That's what he gives you on schedule.
06:19He gives you the processing where if you don't like, he doesn't like the first read, he can
06:23quickly get to the next one.
06:24And that's something he's gotten a ton of credit for behind the scenes.
06:28And on top of that, the fact that he's going to attack those deep downfield windows that
06:32we haven't really seen Jacoby Bursette or at least successfully try to exploit.
06:36Drake May's got the arm talent to make those work.
06:38So those are really the things where when things don't break down, he's still going
06:42to be able to navigate in the pocket and make big plays.
06:45That throw to Baker down the seam makes me so mad because that is like the, the, uh,
06:52that is like the typical, like Drake May throw to me, like the, the Justin Herbert style
06:56of like, just chuck the ball downfield, 50, 60 yards, put it in the bread basket.
07:01You just got to come down with it.
07:02And I think that's the most exciting part, right?
07:04Or one of the more exciting parts, obviously the arm talent, you can throw it anywhere
07:07on the field.
07:08You see it in those clips.
07:09But the other part is the athleticism and we haven't had that dual threat quarterback
07:13here in new England for a long time.
07:16Steve Grogan, Alex Barth mentioned last night on the show, he told me I was disrespecting
07:20Steve Grogan's because he hasn't haven't seen it.
07:22But Taylor show us the athleticism and what may brings from that end as well.
07:25Yes, sir.
07:26And everyone who wants to hear more about Drayvon Baker, we will talk about him later
07:29in the mailbag.
07:30Do not fret.
07:31All right.
07:32So Drake May showed that he can make plays off schedule, both in the preseason and even
07:36against the jets.
07:37So this was a play fourth and eight.
07:40Now earlier in the drive, and we broke this down in another Drake May film review, we
07:44went through the entire first drive of his career.
07:46We felt like he kind of got off the stick concept pretty quickly, where we know that
07:50he tends to struggle with the quick game.
07:52Sometimes it's processing more often than not.
07:54I think it's his footwork that leads to inaccuracy.
07:56But here I think he actually makes a good decision.
07:59So he gets the snap initially.
08:01I think he's looking to Hunter Henry.
08:03I'm not sure if he, you know, feels this defender coming into the window.
08:06If he thinks that if he lets this go, maybe Hunter Henry gets tackled short.
08:10I'm not in his head.
08:11I'm not sure why he makes this decision, but I like that.
08:14He does feel that there is a soft edge for him to get around those.
08:18It's fourth and eight recognizes its man coverage.
08:20And we've talked about this.
08:22Defenses are not going to be able to play man coverage against Drake May the way they
08:26have against Mac Jones, Bailey Zappi, Jacoby Brissett, while Jacoby Brissett and even Zappi
08:31did have some, you know, ability to extend the play run for first down, sometimes just
08:36buying up time to make another secondary throw.
08:38Drake May has better wheels in both of them.
08:40And if you let him out of the pocket and even in a fourth and eight situation, he's going
08:44to be able to exploit that.
08:45So he gets outside the pocket, shows off that speed, exploits the man coverage, gets the
08:50first down.
08:51But we've also seen, and this is where Drake is at his most dangerous when he scrambles
08:54down the middle of the pocket.
08:56Because when this happens again, especially against man coverage, everyone's kind of got
09:00their backs turned.
09:01And when you have the middle of the field, you have access to way more space.
09:04And when Drake has a head of steam and he's running straight, that's when he's tougher
09:08to bring down because he's about 225 pounds.
09:11He's a big guy and he's got a little bit of wiggle when he's going sideways.
09:14He's not as much of a threat, but this is where he's really scary.
09:17So this is a third and 14 situation backed up.
09:21This is the kind of thing where with the Patriots under Jacoby Brissette, you're assuming that
09:24this isn't going to be a conversion because how in the world are they going to get 14
09:27yards, especially behind a porous offensive line.
09:30Now, initially Drake may looks right.
09:32Seems like he's eyeing his check down, but you're going to see they're playing cover
09:35to technique to this side where this defender is doing a good job, midlining these two routes.
09:40And this deep defender is going to be able to possibly converge on the downfield concept.
09:45And Drake knows, yeah, he can get this out to his running back in the flat, you know,
09:49just get the ball out of your hands, but he knows it's not going to be a conversion, but
09:52what he notices, there's a whole lot of room in the middle of that pocket.
09:55So he thinks about throwing, I don't know if it's a pump.
09:57I don't know if he decided, Hey, wait a minute, I could just run straight up the middle, but
10:01that's what he's going to do.
10:03Exploit that hole in the middle of the pocket and run for more than 14 yards gets the first
10:08down and then some.
10:10So that's what he can do in those scary backed up situations where typically you don't really
10:14think the Patriots have a shot.
10:16Now this is an element that really excites me.
10:18Is Drake made Jaden Daniels?
10:20No, he's not even really Caleb Williams, but he was still one of the best scrambling quarterbacks
10:25in college football.
10:26And you can even mix them in on some designed runs.
10:29He's not, you know, he's not like Lamar Jackson type or nothing like that, but in these short
10:32yardage situations or in these red zone situations, he's a massive asset because he does have
10:38good running ability.
10:39So here you're going to see that he's going to target James Bradbury.
10:43It looks like on a zone read keeper.
10:45Now people get zone read and read option confused zone read or any read is really when you just
10:51have one of two options to give it or pull it.
10:54When you talk about like read option, that's when you're reading again, that do I hand
10:58it off or do I take it myself?
11:00And then the option is usually if you have a throw as well.
11:03So that's read option.
11:05This is zone read where they're going to have an inside zone concept, but Drake may has
11:10the option to keep this ball is once again, bullseye is on James Bradbury, who it's kind
11:14of hilarious how badly he plays this.
11:17So first time it's safety.
11:19You see, Drake may sees that he's coming inside.
11:22He also sees that this edge defender is coming inside and he's got Jaheim Bell blocking this
11:26DB.
11:27So he's got a lane right here.
11:29So Drake may is going to take it.
11:31James Bradbury has no idea what the hell is going on.
11:35He's going to run in for a touchdown, showing off that ability to make some plays in design
11:40QB runs, not just scrambles.
11:44This is the best play Drake may made in the kind of thing that gets you so excited as
11:51a Patriots fan.
11:53Can he make these big crazy throws from the pocket?
11:55Yes, he can.
11:56Can he scramble and make plays with his legs and just run for first downs?
12:00Yes, he can.
12:01But we can also do is use his legs just to buy himself more time.
12:05And then he's actually going to get outside the pocket and throw this one way downfield
12:10for a big play.
12:12So one, two, three, four, five step drop.
12:14Soon as he gets to that top of that drop, what do we see pass rusher winning around
12:18the edge?
12:19Drake may isn't scared of it, but he knows because he's got the soft edge, he has time
12:25to buy a little bit extra and try to make a play outside of structure.
12:28KJ, KJ Osborne sees that the safety bit down on the sale route and says, Hey, I'm just
12:33going to take this upfield.
12:34Hit me if you can.
12:36Drake may says, Can I?
12:37Of course I can put this one way downfield busted coverage.
12:42KJ Osborne makes a man miss would have been a touchdown.
12:45But unfortunately, this was called back because of a Chucso Cora for penalty.
12:50He was not on the line of scrimmage.
12:52But just once again, we're going to go through that whole thing because this was one of the
12:54coolest plays that we've seen from Drake may.
12:56So once again, hits the top, feels that pressure, knows he's got a soft edge, gets outside the
13:02pocket.
13:03KJ Osborne heads up play to get open deep downfield.
13:06And then Drake may putting it on him for what should have been a touchdown.
13:10Hopefully in the regular season, we don't have anybody, you know, everybody that's supposed
13:14to be on the line of scrimmage is on the line of scrimmage.
13:16And I tweeted out that video last night and kind of wrote that, you know, the Patriots
13:20haven't had a quarterback like this in a long time.
13:23And while a lot of people agreed, a lot of people kind of took offense to it and were
13:27like they had Tom Brady.
13:29He had a big arm.
13:30He had a rocket.
13:31I'm like that.
13:32That wasn't the point.
13:33Right.
13:34Brady.
13:35Brady had the cannon arm, but he did almost everything in structure where a three step
13:38drop on the money and he could sing it all the way downfield.
13:41But it wasn't a play like that where he's getting outside with his legs and making something
13:45happen with his arm.
13:47Cam Newton, the opposite, a mobile quarterback.
13:49He led the league in rushing touchdowns that season, but his arm was shot at the end.
13:53He couldn't throw the football.
13:54So now they sort of had that blend that I guess modern day quarterback, a Patrick Mahomes
13:58type, even Aaron Rodgers, not not as modern, but can move around and can make plays off
14:03script off platform and sling it around.
14:06So I'm super excited about it.
14:07But that also comes with some downsides, Drake May included.
14:11So what are some reasons for caution for Drake May before we wrap up this mini film session?
14:16Yeah.
14:17Also in the comments, I did misspoke.
14:18I'm sorry.
14:19I did misspeak.
14:20I said read option.
14:22RPO is.
14:23Oh, yeah.
14:24OK.
14:25OK.
14:26So, yeah.
14:27Good call in the comments.
14:28My bad.
14:29Sometimes I talk and I can't even hear what's going out of my mouth.
14:30OK.
14:31Good call by you guys.
14:32That's why we love you.
14:33Now, with the things that are going to worry you a little bit about Drake May, I had a
14:34whole compilation on Twitter.
14:36I'm just going to let it run.
14:37We don't really need to get into the nitty gritty because we have another videos.
14:41But the biggest thing is what he is going to have is mechanical issues like we see in
14:45some of these plays where his footwork is in the right place and some of these balls
14:48sail on him or they're not hitting their target.
14:50He's going to have mental mistakes like the play where he almost threw an interception
14:53to Austin Hooper because he comes off an open to Mario Douglas, goes to the other side of
14:57the field, doesn't realize that there's a defender just waiting for him to make that
15:00play.
15:01Now, another issue potentially is snaps under center.
15:04Now, he fumbled on under center snaps with Nick Leverett twice.
15:08That's something that obviously you really can't avoid, especially when it comes to a
15:12team like the Texans, where they have just so much talent and the margin for error is
15:16going to be very slim.
15:17Last thing, he may invite pressure sometimes right now.
15:20We know he's going to make silly mistakes in terms of sometimes his decision making
15:23with his throws.
15:25But there are also times, like I mentioned, the drifting usually it's more of a self-preservation
15:29tactic.
15:30But in the NFL, you really don't want to be doing that very often.
15:33So he's going to need to know how to navigate these pockets on a consistent basis when not
15:38to go into what he thinks is space, but is actually more of a trap.
15:42Those are really the big things like the bottom line.
15:44This kid's not going to be perfect, but what we want to see is no repeat errors.
15:48If you make a mistake in the game, I want to see you learn from it, ideally in game,
15:53whether it's next drive, whether it's next quarter, I want to see, OK, I can't do this.
15:57I need to do this and improve.
15:59And then obviously, if you need to protect the football, he's not very turnover.
16:04He's more turnover a burst, I would say he had one of the lowest turnover worthy rates
16:07in college football last season, but he's also a rookie.
16:11He's going to be seeing things he hasn't seen before.
16:13But yeah, those are the big bugaboos.
16:15Mistakes are going to happen.
16:16He's going to get himself in trouble when it comes to pressure at times and under center
16:20snaps could be an issue, especially with Nick Leverett.
16:23But I know that they've still been working behind the scenes on that.
16:25So, you know, you hope that that won't be as much of an issue.
16:28And we'll we'll answer that coming up in the mailbag to sort of what to expect from me.
16:31Right.
16:32Because it's not going to be perfect.
16:33It's not going to be near a finished product.
16:35It's not even going to be, you know, what Jaden Daniels is doing, which is obviously
16:38playing, you know, really right now at like an MVP, of course, Rookie of the Year type
16:43level.
16:44He's not as polished as a guy like that.
16:46He's still learning.
16:47He's still growing.
16:48He's young.
16:49He had limited reps even in college.
16:50So the mistakes are going to be made.
16:51Mistakes are going to be had.
16:52But that's going to be the nature of the business.
16:53Again, we'll talk about it.
16:54But those are the sort of things, right.
16:56The mechanical issues, the under center stuff that are just going to have to get weeded
16:59out as he progresses.
17:01And he gets to do so with now a 12 game season ahead of him as the Patriots are turning to
17:06Drake May.
17:07All right.

18:28$5 lineup.
18:29PrizePix, run your game.
18:31All righty, Taylor, let's get in.
18:34Real quick.
18:35I just saw this from Lowe's posted, I think Doug or no, I'm sorry, somebody from Sean
18:40McGuire got the quote.
18:43Keon White on his penalties said, I really don't care.
18:46I'm going to be a more old school heavy hitter.
18:48You take the fines when they come, but you just keep playing.
18:50If I stop playing as fast, then I'm not going to be as dominant.
18:53Keon, that is not the point.
18:56Like having, it's one thing if you just want to play fast, having situational awareness
19:00has nothing to do with you playing fast.
19:02Like I don't love that answer.
19:04I hope that the coaches gave him a little, you know, a little talking to about the kinds
19:09of penalties he needs to avoid.
19:10I just thought that was interesting to say the least.
19:13Yeah, for sure.
19:14Again, it's like you said, it comes with, I guess, the territory of playing like a fast
19:19physical player.
19:20You're going to run into the quarterback sometimes and you're going to, you know, make some mistakes
19:25and mental mistakes, but you also have to be cautious of it, right?
19:28You can't just say, well, I don't care that's going to happen.
19:30You still have to make like legitimate changes and try and try and do things in your game.
19:35So not the best comment from Keon, but you know, we'll see, we'll see what the coaches
19:38say.
19:39It'll see how that plays out.
19:40All right, Taylor, let's get in to our Drake May week mailbag.
19:43First question is from Hebhammer94, my buddy Sammy James on Twitter.
19:47Shout out, Sammy.
19:48What is a realistic expectation for fans to expect from Drake May this Sunday against
19:53the Texans?
19:54Do you think they use them conservatively or are they going to let them cook?
19:57For my perspective, conservatively would be not having him drop back 25 times.
20:03If that's the plan, hell yes.
20:05Like 20 drop backs I'm cool with.
20:07If it gets to 25 because of a game situation and you know, they have a two minute drive,
20:11fine.
20:12I do not want to see Drake May drop back 30 times.
20:14Like he can fall out.
20:15If you put him in the right situations where he can go deep off play action, you know,
20:19he has some three step drops where he can get the ball out of his hands at the top because
20:22he's got some kind of shot play that he likes.
20:25Things like that I'm fine with, but you do not need to showcase Drake May this week.
20:29You have a good run game.
20:31Mondry Stephenson obviously didn't participate today because of a foot injury.
20:35Nicolette Verrett was limited today with, I believe it was an ankle injury.
20:39Yeah.
20:40Yeah.
20:41Ankle injury.
20:42So of course, you know, those have to be factored into the run game, but I think they also factoring
20:45because if you have Brian Hudson potentially at center, I'd rather run the ball than have
20:50him try to, you know, make all the calls and get the offensive line in order.
20:53I wonder if they'd actually give it to Mike and one who actually, that's one thing I've
20:56been thinking about because if he's at guard, it's a lot easier to make those calls.
20:59Obviously you're not in the center, but it's easier than when you're out at tackle.
21:02Definitely.
21:03But yeah, that's a, I think that Drake is going to be able to go deep.
21:06I'm expecting like three deep throws at least I would say, cause I really do think they're
21:12wanting to give them opportunities to air it out and give defenses a reason to respect
21:16them and not just to cover one all live long day.
21:18But yeah, I think it's going to be more on the conservative side because I think you
21:21got to protect this young guy, especially with the offensive line situation.
21:25Like I think it'd be very irresponsible if they just said, Hey, let's drop back pass
21:29on like all these first downs, which they don't usually do.
21:32I think they are pretty good about typically having some threat of the run for the most
21:36part.
21:37But yeah, you just, you want to lean on your ground game.
21:3930, 35 carries should be the goal and put Drake may in the best position to succeed
21:43where he doesn't have to drop back in obvious passing situations.
21:46Totally agree.
21:47And that's why I want to bring up this question here as well.
21:48Do we think AVP will mostly use, uh, or run his scheme and system that he's been running
21:53or do you think he's going to incorporate some stuff that Drake may did well in college?
21:56And I think we already kind of saw that in the preseason a little bit where when he played
22:00versus Jacoby, it was a little bit different.
22:02It was more, uh, you know, shotgun stuff.
22:04It was RPO type plays, right?
22:06Where he can kind of quick read, get the ball out, uh, get the ball in space and also run
22:10if he has to.
22:11And we saw it even in the clips that you just showed.
22:13So, uh, in this kind of dovetails into the, into the past question where I don't know
22:17if it's going to necessarily be conservative, but I don't think they're going to run this,
22:21you know, extravagant offense that, uh, is going to be way too hard for him and his line
22:26and his wide receivers to all get on the same page and understand.
22:29So I'm with you too.
22:30I think lean on the lean on the run game, um, especially because the Texans have sort
22:35of the, like you mentioned it earlier to me, a middle of the road run defense versus, uh,
22:39their daunting defensive line and pass rush, which we'll get to.
22:42But I do think they'll, they'll sort of incorporate some, some college style things, if you will.
22:47It's not going to be a, it's not going to be hold up the cards type college offense.
22:49Right.
22:50But you know, they'll put some stuff in, uh, that he likes to run.
22:53He talked about that a little bit today at his press conference too, where they do have
22:56some input.
22:57And Alex Van Pelt has also said that they're going to mold their scheme and system around,
23:01um, you know, the, uh, the strengths of the quarterback.
23:03Yeah.
23:04A hundred percent just to build on what that might look like, because yes, like you sure
23:07we've heard a couple of times, there's things in there that he likes, which is smart.
23:10That's one of the things where, you know, Alex Van Pelt hasn't been perfect, but I think
23:13his work with Drake may has been pretty good.
23:15But yeah, I think we'll see more moving pockets, you know, sprint outs, bootlegs, more RPOs,
23:20maybe downfield RPOs.
23:21I'm not totally positive about that, but I know that Drake may was pretty good with those
23:25in college.
23:26Uh, but yeah, just using his athleticism.
23:28I think that's the biggest thing.
23:29Um, you know, like I said, maybe some, uh, quarterback runs or at least some, uh, read
23:35kind of plays where he has the option to give it or keep it, um, and gives defense a little
23:39something to think about.
23:40So yeah, absolutely.
23:41So I think we're going to see more, much more of a Drake may tailored offense, but we saw
23:45what Jacoby said.
23:46Yeah, for sure.
23:47All right.
23:48Well, let's talk about then, uh, this Texans defensive line.
23:50Uh, I tweeted out a, um, you know, sort of a, a stat grab about it yesterday where, uh,
23:56the Patriots as of right now are allowing the highest pressure rate in the NFL upfront
24:0048.3%, according to next gen stats, uh, the Texans generating the best pass rush in football
24:06right now, 42% and defensive end and Neil Hunter leads the league with 29 pressures.
24:11Again, that's all next gen stats numbers opposite Daniel Hunter, or sort of in that edge rusher
24:16category for Houston is Will Anderson, uh, last year's number three overall pick.
24:20So they are, uh, they're able to get after it, especially on the edge Lowe's asks, will
24:24this defensive line post more of a struggle inside for a guy like Nicola Brett, who wasn't
24:28great last week in PA in pass pro or Taylor?
24:31Is it mostly coming off, uh, off of the edge?
24:33Is that kind of what may is going to have to deal with this week?
24:36So a couple of things I want to address first one, I know people always bring up Caleb Williams
24:39and how he got sacked seven times and all that, and he's pressured a ton.
24:44I just want to say, I looked at all the sacks, a lot of that had to do with being in crazy
24:49long yardage situations.
24:51There was one like blown up screen where Caleb just didn't have anywhere to go with the ball
24:54into the sack for a couple of throws where Caleb goes backwards and just does things
24:58that you don't really like.
24:59Drake may will make some kind of head scratching plays.
25:02You don't see him go backwards very often the way that Caleb does a lot.
25:05So I don't, I don't think it's a apples to apples with their situations.
25:09Obviously the offensive line still has to keep up, but I don't really think that there's
25:13going to be a game where Drake may get sacked seven times.
25:16Now that said line games, and that's why I want to avoid the obvious passing situations
25:20because then yes, the interior is going to be an issue because they're going to be able
25:23to specifically attack what is already a backup center and Nicola Brett could be a deeper
25:28backup and Brian Hudson.
25:30And you know, Mike and when he was not someone you're really worried about, but still the
25:32communication there, all it takes is one week link on the chain and then it breaks
25:36down.
25:37So I would say the entire offensive line is an issue or a concern in those situations,
25:43but on a down to down basis, really it's just the edges.
25:46Houston's guys in the middle are fine.
25:48But it's really will Anderson into Neil Hunter.
25:51Those are the ones who scare you.
25:52Now I spoke to Darian low today.
25:54He mentioned, reminded me that he actually played with the Neil Hunter when he was with
25:57the Vikings and he's a very, Neil Hunter has a crazy spin move and he's like, yeah, I just
26:03got to be ready for it.
26:04Even talked to Darian about the fact that the biggest improvement that I think he's
26:07made outside of the independent Aaron use is not getting beat inside.
26:11We've talked about this a ton where last year he was losing so fast trying to just two hand
26:15punch guys.
26:16They move his hands aside and just have a free path to the quarterback or they're not
26:19even going around the arc.
26:21You can't have that because that's where Jacoby presets taking some of his biggest hits.
26:25And with Drake, yeah, he can get around the pocket.
26:27And I think with that spin move, Drake's mobility will be a huge asset, but you also just don't
26:33want him to still be in the process of a throw and then get hit.
26:35And then we'll Anderson can just do a little bit of everything and that scares me with
26:38Trey Jacobs.
26:39Now I need to do a little more research.
26:40I'm early in my scouting report phase.
26:42I don't know how much they switch up.
26:43Trey Jacobs told me that they do a little bit of playing on both sides, but with Jacobs,
26:48he's still learning the strike system.
26:49He's still learning the offense.
26:50He's on.
26:51This is going to be his third start.
26:52A second start, third, third start, left tackle, right tackle, and then this week, right?
26:57And it's going to be his third start.
26:58And he was even saying that right tackle is still something he's getting used to because
27:01he hasn't played it since college.
27:03So with him, I am definitely worried, but it's more of the situation.
27:07Like great dude, hard worker, clearly talented player.
27:11But you know, you're going up against a guy who was taken very early in the draft and
27:14one of the best veteran pass rushers in the NFL.
27:16So the edge guys are really where the concern is.
27:19But if they're on like third and 10, it's anybody's game.
27:22I'm scared of any gap getting attacked.
27:24How do they, I'll go to this question then at Kyle's for miles, uh, how did the Patriots
27:29do it then?
27:30Just for me?
27:32I don't know.
27:33It's your last name's Kyle's.
27:34I'm a runner.
27:35So Kyle's and miles kind of puts that together.
27:36Maybe it's Ahmed putting together a, uh, a burner here, but so you mentioned that, right?
27:41Jacob's on the right side, just getting used to Peter's this system, the strike system
27:44with the Patriots doing very low, uh, a better left tackle than right tackle.
27:48We've said that many a times on this show, uh, but someone who is again, replacement
27:52level, not, not a superstar.
27:54So what do they do then to help that out?
27:57Is it, you know, chip help?
27:58Is it keeping in line guys?
27:59Is it, uh, unbalanced situations with Zach Thomas or, or things like that?
28:03How do you, please God, I can't take another penalty.
28:07Okay.
28:08What's your answer then?
28:09How do they do it?
28:10Um, well, one stay ahead of the chains so that you don't have to put him in situations
28:13where yeah, you know, we know that he has to drop back and we're pinning our ears back
28:17and there's not a whole lot he can do getting the ball out of his hands quickly.
28:20Obviously, you know, we heard about that against the 49ers.
28:23I think that's been the plan for Jacobi the past couple of weeks, but one, sometimes it's
28:27just coverage where, you know, the Patriots do this teams a lot where they just don't
28:31give you the first read.
28:32And then by the time you get to your second, things collapse and there's not a whole lot
28:35you can do about that in the quick game.
28:37That's just good defense sometimes.
28:39But I think Drake needs to capitalize when there are open guys and he hits that back
28:43foot just needs to get the ball out of his hands and also protecting him from himself.
28:46Sometimes if you're in third and you know, 11, 13, 12, and you really don't need the
28:51conversion, it's early in the game, throw a screen run.
28:55Just don't keep putting Drake in positions where he has to be, you know, put on the Superman
28:59cape and be the guy that we know he can be.
29:01But with this offensive line, I just don't think you want to take those same chances.
29:05So I think relatively, relatively conservative play calling is the way lean on your ground
29:09game, you know, mix in the past, obviously, but just be careful about how you do it.
29:13You said chip help.
29:14I think we saw more chip help on even three step drops last week.
29:17I really like that max protect all play action because now you've got a guy who can throw
29:21the post and you got the guy that can throw the cross.
29:24You know, he can challenge every level of the field where those two man routes aren't
29:28as dangerous when all you have is a threat is the roster and then they're dropping seven
29:32into coverage and it's like, well, this is bad math and then even he can exploit it with
29:36his legs.
29:37So that's going to be a big part of it is play calling.
29:39And then Drake also has to put it on himself to make sure he's not holding on to the football,
29:43which I'm sure he'll do.
29:44He's usually good about that.
29:45But as I said earlier, he's a rookie, so it's going to be inconsistent.
29:47Yeah.
29:48All right.
29:49One question here before we take a quick break to talk about our friends at game time and
29:52I'll take this one first.
29:53Should the Patriots extend Jacoby to be a long-term backup for May?
29:57Now, there's a lot of layers to this question, right?
30:00Because he comes in here one year deal, 8 million bucks, and basically for better or
30:05for worse signed on to be at least, you know, throughout the first couple of weeks of the
30:09season, a punching bag, right?
30:10To, you know, take over, help migrate, if you will, Drake may into this offense, be
30:15sort of a, a, a mentor, which Drake mentioned today, a guy to help teach him the system
30:21and, and things like that.
30:23Now, they only did sign him for one year and they have now demoted him to a backup role.
30:29But I think having a veteran around as a backup in Jacoby, we're set now that this is obviously
30:35going to depend on a lot of different things that happen, right?
30:39We talked about it last night, if, you know, AVP is in sort of a tryout to be the long-term
30:44offense coordinator here, right?
30:46If, if things don't go well with Drake May, they're going to move on.
30:49But if, if Van Pelt is still here, I don't hate Jacoby being a backup here in the system,
30:54right?
30:55He's a veteran presence who can come in and win you a game if need be.
30:59And you don't really need to, again, you don't have to teach them the system again.
31:02He can just come in and be that mentor and continue to be that, that sounding board and
31:06that guide for a young Drake May.
31:08You don't want this to be a next season, Drake May, Joe Milton situation, just like, you
31:14know, a couple of years ago was okay.
31:15Brian Hoyer was here with Mac Jones and then all of a sudden it's, um, or it's whoever
31:21was here.
31:22There were, there was somebody else here, but it ends up being just Mac Jones.
31:24Yeah, it was where it ends up being Mac Jones and Bailey's happy in year two.
31:28And then when Mac gets hurt, you have to go to Zappy and it's this whole, this whole cluster
31:31rep that we saw unfold the last time.
31:33So ideally I want a veteran here to be May's back.
31:36I don't want it to just have to be Joe Milton.
31:38And I think Jacoby is a great option.
31:39Now is you're going to want to do that or does he want to go play football somewhere
31:43else?
31:44That's the, that's the main question here.
31:45He's used to new England.
31:46He knows the people, he's a captain.
31:48I think they, they appreciate him.
31:50But if he wants to go try and win foot or play football games, then it's obviously not
31:54going to be here in Foxborough.
31:55Exactly.
31:56I mean, that's, that's pretty much it.
31:57I won't really see why he would want to stay one.
32:01I think it's weird to be voted a captain somewhere and then you lose the job and you're going
32:05to come back when the other guy is the captain.
32:07Like I know that they all Joe well and all that, and I think the personality is meshed
32:10well together.
32:12But I always a competitor.
32:14I'm sure he thinks he could start somewhere or have a better chance to play somewhere
32:17because here he knows there's no chance he's going to play unless God forbid Drake gets
32:21hurt.
32:22There's going to be other teams that are in similar situations, the Patriots, or they
32:24maybe draft a kid and they're like, ah, we just want to make sure that we have somebody
32:27in the system who can be that better and a good mentor figure.
32:31Now the kind of wrench there is the fact that Kobe didn't play that well and people are
32:37going to love his toughness and all of that, but they're also going to see the numbers
32:40and be like, ah, yikes.
32:42So I don't think he's got much of a leg to stand on if he wants to be a starter necessarily.
32:46Obviously I'd love him to stay because we know they work well together in that room
32:50and I think he is a great mentor figure, but I don't see why he would stay given.
32:54Once again, he lost his job after being a captain and, uh, you know, he probably wants
33:00a better opportunity elsewhere that he's probably, I mean, next year Milton could be QB two for
33:04all we know.
33:05And then he's QB three.
33:06And it's just like, well, why am I doing here?
33:07Just collecting a paycheck.
33:09Like, you know, again, he's a competitor.
33:10He's still fairly young for a quarterback, you know, relatively.
33:14So yeah, I just, I don't think it's realistic, but if he's up for it, you know, I don't think
33:18anybody would, uh, would, uh, be against it.
33:20I think that's the perfect way to put it.
33:22It would make a ton of sense again, depending on, um, who comes in as an office of coordinator
33:25to another OC might want to bring in a different veteran who has ran the similar system before
33:30and bring him along that way.
33:31But, uh, ultimately we'll see what happens.
33:33I think we both agreed that he would be a good option.
33:35It'll ultimately end up being up to Jacoby, uh, and the coaches are.
33:38But actually I do have this question from Amit producer on it.
33:41Why isn't Mike going to the game on Sunday?
33:43I'm not going to be at Drake Mays for a star cause one of my friends is getting married.
33:46So I can't be there.
33:47I know it's too bad.
33:50Uh, shout out my friend who's getting married.
33:52Uh, that'll be fun.
33:54And, uh, but I'm not going to be there, but you guys can be there this weekend with the

35:20It's mayday.
35:21It's going to be super exciting.
35:22All right, Taylor, let's get back to the mailbag here.
35:26Um, quick, easy, fun one, uh, to kick off the second half of this mailbag.
35:31How many yards does Drake may throw for on Sunday in his first NFL game?
35:35200 and 20, 215, let's see the last time a Patriots quarterback even threw for that many
35:46yards.
35:47I'm going to check real quick.
35:48Cause I think it's going to be conservative where he's not going to throw a ton, but I
35:52think he's going to have some bombs.
35:54Um, last time a quarterback, it was, uh, all the Broncos games happy pass for two 56 Zappi
36:01also passed for two 40 against the Steelers.
36:04So maybe I'm going too low.
36:05How many did he pass for against the Jets in their season finale?
36:08Does it say it wasn't say it 88, Oh, less than a hundred.
36:15That's a Jacoby Brissette number right there.
36:17The less than I would have said it was less than a hundred and yeah, I'll go a little
36:24bit higher.
36:25I'll go 230 yards.
36:26Two 30 is my number.
36:27I, again, I think they're going to, um, I think they're going to let it loose a little
36:30bit.
36:31Not, not in a crazy way.
36:32His strength is throwing the football and making plays through the air.
36:35So, uh, let's see what happens and see if we can get it done.
36:38So I'm going 230 yards.
36:40I was watching like some Cole Williams highlights, just like the throws, not necessarily how
36:43we did them, just deep throws that were successful.
36:46And I was just like, yeah, you might get those now.
36:49That's crazy.
36:50Right?
36:51It's so long.
36:52I can't wait.
36:53I can't, we haven't seen, again, we haven't seen insane throwing of the football since
36:56Tom Brady was here.
36:57We haven't seen the running of the football since Ken Newton from the position.
36:59So blend them all together.
37:01It's going to be exciting.
37:02All right.
37:03Speaking of this offense, Taylor, what wide receivers benefit the most from this move?
37:08I would say Jalen Polk is an obvious one because he and Drake had been working together and
37:11getting to know each other since they first got to Foxborough to Mario Douglas, who Drake
37:16may liken to Josh downs, who was his best receiver when they had his first career season
37:21as a starter at UNC.
37:23And then Keyshawn booty, another guy who's spent a ton of time with Drake may in the
37:27preseason.
37:29The main personnel groupings were Jayvon Baker, Jalen Polk, and then Keyshawn booty with like
37:33pop mixing in a little bit.
37:34So booty has been building every week.
37:37He's getting better and better, which has been really cool and exciting to see.
37:40It's first as a blocker, he's getting like one or two targets a week, but they're being
37:44more impressive as the weeks have gone on.
37:47And as someone who's practiced with Drake a decent amount, I'd imagine that he'll be
37:50pretty active and someone that Drake is going to have a lot of confidence in as well.
37:54So really those young receivers, I think are going to have the most benefit.
37:57Like Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry Gibson, Mandre, they'll get their touches, but I think
38:02it's a youth movement.
38:03That's really like, what was I saying all the way?
38:06Like when Drake got picked in like in the spring, I was saying if three of their young
38:10players can play significant snaps and do well, I think it actually makes the offense
38:14a little bit scarier and something you need to respect.
38:17Hope we've seen flashes.
38:18Maybe we haven't seen anything in real game action.
38:20So TBD, but I do like at least that the offense is starting to put guys out there who we could
38:25see working with Drake make for the next Drake may for the next, you know, three, four
38:28plus years.
38:29Yeah.
38:30I'm super excited about booty.
38:32I think he was, he was great the other night.
38:34I thought the way he blocked as well was, was pretty huge.
38:38Just as far as like a guy who just goes out there and wants to win and doesn't care about
38:41himself and, and people have wondered a little bit about Kashawn booty's attitude and the
38:45off the field stuff with him and the things that happened down at LSU and whatnot.
38:49But he proved to me last week that he wants to go out there, catch footballs, block his
38:52block his ass off and win football games.
38:55So that, that was really good to see.
38:56And you mentioned too, that those guys have sort of worked together as that sort of second
39:01second group wide receiver quarterback.
39:03So hopefully they can bring that to the first team.
39:05The other youth movement player though, Taylor is Jayvon Baker.
39:09We haven't touched on it, but we do have a question on him and you touched on it earlier
39:12that we're going to talk about it.
39:13So does this get Jayvon Baker on the field again, Mayo preaches playing the young guys
39:18and that they get better by playing.
39:20So what does this mean for Jayvon Baker?
39:23And also does Taekwon Thornton snaps continue to fall?
39:26What do you make of the rest?
39:27I guess of the wide receiver Taekwon Thornton played, I think one snap last week.
39:32He's pretty much out of the rotation.
39:33He was replaced at X by Jalen Polk with Kashawn booty taking over for Polk as the Z will poke
39:38and KJ.
39:39Now KJ has a shoulder injury.
39:41I don't know how serious it is.
39:42And if that's why he obviously he was an active, I don't know if that's necessarily the reason
39:47because Kashawn booty has already kind of been on the rise.
39:50So for the two veterans, AJ, especially with Kendrick Bourne, I don't see him having very
39:55significant role in the offense moving forward.
39:57He didn't do much with the time.
39:58He was on the field as a receiver, unfortunately, either Dave on Baker, it's the same deal y'all
40:03like if he's not playing or not getting opportunities and now we've seen it with Kashawn booty.
40:07So it's not even like, remember with booty, we will be saying like, why don't they giving
40:10him chances?
40:11And that was weird because it's like, well, this is a talented kid.
40:14You put him at X where he shouldn't be.
40:16And then he couldn't get his feet in bounds instead of maybe giving him more chances or
40:20more ideal situations.
40:21You benched him.
40:22And we didn't know if it was behind the scenes or what, but that was a situation where I
40:25figured maybe he's not doing enough on the field.
40:27Now we've seen Kashawn booty rise up the ranks and get more snaps.
40:31And we've literally heard Alex van Pelt, I believe it was say that Jayvon needs to earn
40:35the trust of the coaches.
40:36He needs to earn the trust of quarterbacks.
40:38He needs to line up the right way.
40:40He needs to run the right routes.
40:41You cannot, there's yes, you need to get better on the field.
40:44You need to do the bare minimum though, to get on the field, the bare minimum is doing
40:48enough that people don't think they have to worry about you if they send you out.
40:51And that's unfortunately what it seems like Jayvon Baker is for the offense right now.
40:55Y'all know I'm a huge Jayvon Baker fan, his talents out of this world, Alex van Pelt praised
41:00him for being able to get open and being able to make plays at the catch point, but you
41:04got to earn it.
41:05And I don't think he's earned it yet.
41:06And I, you sort of had me come back on my Jayvon taker Jayvon Baker take a little bit
41:14last night when we talked about it on the crossover, where I mentioned Jayvon Baker
41:18as a guy who, you know, you're continuing on to this youth movement and these guys have
41:21worked together a little bit.
41:23Maybe they give him a chance with Drake may, but you mentioned it to me last night, where
41:28if he doesn't know what he's doing on the field, then that's just going to hurt Drake
41:31may even more.
41:32You need everybody around Drake may doing exactly what they have to do.
41:36So you don't hinder his development anymore, where, you know, he could drop back and hit
41:39his, hit his back foot.
41:41And he could look to a guy and think that, you know, Drayvon Baker is supposed to be
41:43there and he's not.
41:44And so that that's the kind of stuff that you want it to be as perfect as it can be
41:49around Drake may.
41:50We already worry about the offensive line a little bit right now.
41:53And so you want at least the receivers to be going in the right place and knowing what
41:56they're doing.
41:57So if Jayvon Baker can't do that, it doesn't really matter how much and how easily he gets
42:01open, right?
42:02If he's not in the right place at the right time, and is it on the same page as Drake
42:04may, it's just going to hurt not only may not only Baker, but the offense as a whole.
42:09And then think of this example really quickly.
42:11So like Derrick Stingley Jr. they're facing this weekend.
42:14What if Jayvon Baker is running a curl against a player of that caliber and Stingley, who
42:19if you make a mistake, just got to pick it off, say Jayvon Baker runs a curl and adds
42:23one more step than he's supposed to literally just one that will pick six because Drake's
42:29going to throw it.
42:30When he thinks that receiver's coming back to him, that one step gives Stingley the advantage
42:35to be able to attack the ball without being contested.
42:38And then you're on the sideline.
42:39That's going the other way.
42:40That hurts the entire team.
42:42So I know it can be hard to be like, well, you know, what difference does it make?
42:45He's young.
42:46He's going to run the wrong routes.
42:47Yeah.
42:48But if you're doing it in practice so much, they don't trust you on the game field.
42:50Those are the kind of reasons why, because one tiny mistake from a young player can be
42:55the difference.
42:56And if you're not earning those snaps on the field to even make those mistakes, you know,
42:59that's a bigger conversation.
43:00Yeah, for sure.
43:01All right.
43:02We have a couple more and then we're going to get out of here.
43:04But I just saw this one in the chat and it's purely speculative, speculative.
43:08And I know you love these kind of questions, Taylor.
43:10So, old man, Bob, he's our guy.
43:13If Polk caught that touchdown last week, is Drake May starting this week?
43:17If they win the game, Jacoby throws the game winner.
43:19Do they turn to him or do they keep on the bench for at least another week longer?
43:23I was thinking the exact same thing, honestly, like during the game, I was like, if they
43:27win this, is Jacoby off scott free?
43:30It's a good question.
43:31I think he would have bought himself one more week.
43:36So do I.
43:37I think the vibes are better.
43:38I think like we said, if they lost against the Dolphins, significant changes would need
43:42to be made.
43:43Like that would be a turning point where something's got to give and is congested as the offense
43:48field.
43:49At least that would show you like, okay, we can kind of push downfield because the drive
43:52itself wasn't bad.
43:53Like Jacoby was actually doing well.
43:55So if he caps that with a touchdown and they win, yeah, I think he may have one more week.
44:00But also Jacoby was part of the reason it wasn't a touchdown.
44:03So yeah, I think I'm with you.
44:05And then the end of the game to Romeo said that he mismanaged it a little bit.
44:09I think that was in the on the coffee for him.
44:10I don't think they necessarily wanted to play Drake May this weekend.
44:13I don't think they wanted to do it unless they had to.
44:16And I think that was a little bit, you know, a part of the plan here where let's not shoo
44:20him in if we don't have to.
44:22So if they won that game, if percent had that game winning drive under his belt and they
44:26didn't have to put Drake May up against this great pass rush against the four and one Houston
44:29Texans who are the best team in the AFC self and one of the best teams in football, I don't
44:34think they would have.
44:35I don't think it would have gave them an excuse to keep Berset out there one week longer,
44:39where if they went with Berset this week after what happened on Sunday, that's not putting
44:44the team in the best position to win.
44:45That's not.
44:46That's not, you know, the what Mayo says where it may gives us the best chance now and in
44:51the future.
44:52He was saying that Berset today, he mentioned Berset's protection of the football and understanding
44:57the offense kind of bought him, essentially bought him some time as the quarterback and
45:01was the reason why they went with him early.
45:03Tides change.
45:04Things shifted.
45:06It was a clear transition point, like you said, on Sunday, and so I don't think they
45:08had any excuse to not go to May this week, but I do think that again, I'll say it again.
45:13I think it would have bought him a little bit more time and would have bought the organization
45:16starting Drake May a little bit more time as well.
45:20All right, Taylor, two more.
45:23Do you think the coaching staff can string this team together so we can finally have
45:27a clean game again?
45:28No missed tackles, no stupid penalties.
45:30We talked about it before the mailbag with Keon White saying that, you know, he's not
45:33going to change the way he plays basically, and he gets those penalties and that's okay.
45:37Whatever he said, I'm obviously paraphrasing phrasing here, but not a great quote.
45:41A lot of stupid penalties last week.
45:43A lot of drive changing penalties, third and 15 pass interferences, personal fouls, roughing
45:48the passers, 12 men on the field, just too many mental mistakes that stem from coaching.
45:53So new quarterback, new vibes, new era, all the buzzwords we want to say.
45:58Do things change from the coaching staff perspective and does this team, do they have the ability
46:01to get back on track in that regard?
46:04So there is some level of optimism that the Patriots can get better.
46:08Okay.
46:09One, the missed tackles haven't really been a problem since the short week.
46:12And I think we all expected that.
46:14Like Gerard Mayo is a linebacker.
46:16You're going to tackle when you have a linebacker as a coach.
46:19The penalties are a different story a little bit because we've seen the ebb and flow with
46:23his team where they get a ton of penalties and then they get none and then they get even
46:26more penalties and then they don't get any penalties.
46:29You know, it's not been consistent now.
46:30They are, I think, middle of the pack or bottom half of the league in penalties, to be fair.
46:35So it's not like they're going out here every week and just doing whatever they want and
46:39they can't be corralled or anything like that.
46:40It's not, it's not that case.
46:42Frankly, some of the penalties that they were called for were pretty ticky tack, like the
46:45fault guard on Nick Leverett.
46:48The delay game was just bad coaching.
46:49Honestly, that had more to do with the coaches and the players.
46:53You know, there was even the holding penalty on Nick Leverett I didn't love.
46:57Some of the penalties even on Hunter Henry may have been a little, you know, I'm not
47:01so sure.
47:03I think there's, there's a chance they could play a clean game.
47:05I think also if they're motivated and they really, especially against a team like the
47:09Texans where it's like, no, you can't sleep on these guys.
47:11Maybe it's the Dolphins.
47:13They're a young team.
47:14They're an immature team in terms of being a new organization being run by new leadership.
47:19Maybe they kind of slept on the Dolphins.
47:20I don't know why they would.
47:21Well, he had just lost three straight games, but that's how it felt.
47:26But the Texans, they know they can't mess around.
47:28This is too good of a team for you to be beating yourselves.
47:29Cause then if you do that, you're not going to have a chance.
47:33I'm going to give them a little bit of faith this week.
47:36As bad as it, I'm going to say they do, but I'm not, I'm not as confident as I've been.
47:42Some of the other times we've talked about, I don't know if it necessarily happens this
47:46week.
47:47Right.
47:48I mean, they've played a couple of poor games from this regard, the missed tackles, the
47:51penalties, et cetera.
47:52And the reason I have a little bit of optimism that they can write the ship at least eventually
47:57is that they showed in week one that they can play clean football.
48:01It's not like they've played five straight weeks of poorly coached, poorly disciplined
48:05football.
48:06They showed at one point in time, it was week one, it was a new season.
48:09Everybody was fresh and they hadn't lost games yet, but they did show that they at least
48:13have that ability.
48:14Now some captains are out.
48:15Some leadership is out.
48:16You're down to, you know, you're starting quarterback or you're, I guess your captain
48:19quarterback and the guy who was originally the leader of the offense.
48:23And so things are changing and leadership's changing.
48:25So it's going to be up to those guys as well, you know, to get everybody going, you know,
48:29straightforward.
48:30But this coaching staff showed that they can get these guys in line.
48:33And I think that that gives me enough optimism that eventually they can do it again.
48:37All right.
48:38Final question.
48:39And it has a little bit to do with the team and the locker room and the vibes and things
48:44of that nature.
48:46So the hot hand picks asks, is it farfetched to believe that we could see across the board
48:51higher effort supporting cast from may receivers running better offensive line, playing better.
48:58And I'll add to that guys playing smarter because all right, look, new change, new motivation,
49:03dynamics, different, I guess a shift in mentality where we're moving forward to the future.
49:08Does that kind of stuff resonate throughout the locker room?
49:10And do you think we can see guys playing better just because Drake mays on the field?
49:14I think maybe subconsciously they could be a little more locked in because they're just
49:17so tired of the same old thing and losing and bad offense.
49:20I don't think maybe the receivers could run harder and we see maybe more effort from them
49:24because they are young.
49:25I think they're more susceptible to the ebbs and flows of an NFL season, especially when
49:29things go bad and obviously drinks their guy.
49:31So they're going to want to show out offensive line.
49:34I don't think they're going to try to be better because I think they knew that they were getting
49:37to go be percent lit up all the time and probably felt really shitty about that.
49:41So yeah, I don't expect the offensive line to play any differently really.
49:44But I think maybe from the receivers, we could see a little bit more effort, but I also hate
49:49to get into the guessing whether a guy's going hard or not, unless it's very obvious.
49:55Really just these more like receivers have been frustrated than like they're not trying
49:57to me.
49:58So yeah, I don't really know about that, but on the offensive line, I'm going to give you
50:02like a hard no.
50:03I think they've been trying pretty hard because nobody wanted to see Jacoby Brissett taking
50:07the hits that he was taking.
50:08So I am fully of the mindset that a team can completely shift the way they play just because
50:13of one change of quarterback.
50:14And I've seen it before firsthand.
50:16I'm not going to get into my quarterbacking days back in Worcester State, but attitudes
50:21change and shift.
50:22You're the one who had to get benched.
50:23No, I was the one who came in and won some games after things hit the fan a little bit.
50:27And so I've seen guys rally and it's not just because it was me and it's not just because
50:31of the part.
50:32You were winning.
50:33Yeah, right.
50:34But yeah, you're winning.
50:35But when things change like that, when you're banging your head against the wall and nothing's
50:39changing and then finally one thing changes, it's like, oh, maybe there's a chance here
50:44and there's a little bit more hope.
50:45And let's rally around this guy because this guy gives us X, Y, and Z.
50:50And so I've seen it happen.
50:51And I've seen it happen in the NFL, too.
50:52Things change like freaking Tim Tebow, right?
50:54Tim Tebow won games and that team's whole attitude, their identity, the shift changed.
50:59And he wasn't even that good of a quarterback.
51:01And just like I wasn't that good of a quarterback, but things play differently.
51:04And but guys, you know, guys change things, right?
51:06And so I've seen it happen.
51:07I think it can happen.
51:08So I'm of the mindset that I don't know if it happens here, but things like that can
51:12happen.
51:14You know, May brings a different attitude, brings some juice.
51:16The future is now right.
51:18This isn't you know, I liked that saying when Rappaport reported it yesterday, where the
51:24future is now in New England, where when Jacoby was out there, it feels a little bit like,
51:28all right, we're still we're not there yet.
51:30We're still trying to build.
51:32And so we're not really trying to win games yet because we haven't given the we haven't
51:36given the franchise to Drake yet.
51:37And we haven't had the next draft yet.
51:39And there's a lot of waiting.
51:41And guys don't want to wait.
51:42Guys don't want to, especially older veterans who only have a certain amount of time left.
51:46And so now it's Drake's turn.
51:48We believe in him.
51:49We believe we're ready now.
51:50We believe he's ready to win now and he can help the rest of you win.
51:53So here's to hoping that, you know, the rest of, you know, everybody else follows suit
51:58and things go positively in that nature.
52:00All right, that's going to do it here, Taylor, for us, for our Drake May week mailbag.
52:04We will be back later on in the week for all of your Patriots coverage here on the CLNS
52:09media network on Patriots Press Pass.
52:11So make sure you rate, review and subscribe to the channel, like the video that helps
52:14us out as well.
52:15We'll be back down to Fox ball all week, all week, excuse me, with your updates.
52:19So make sure you keep it here with us on Twitter as well.
52:21At T Kyle's 39 and at Mike Kablick Patriots versus Texans coming up on Sunday and it's
52:27Drake May's turn.
52:28Taylor, you look like you have something to say before we go.
52:30Also quick tease coach flight trainer for Christian Gonzalez, Marte Mapu, one of the
52:35best trainers in the game.
52:37Friend of the show.
52:38Really awesome dude.
52:39Really generous with his time.
52:41Just actually recorded a video with him breaking down five or six of my favorite clips from
52:46Christian Gonzalez in each of his matchups this week.
52:49Also got coach coach flights perspective on each of the matchups because he kind of works
52:53with Christian when they prep each week.
52:55So we got to know what the mentality was and also Christian had some really cool words
52:59for his coach and getting to see his reaction.
53:01That was awesome.
53:02So be looking out for that later this week.
53:04Yep, for sure.
53:05That's going to come down here on Patriots Press Pass.
53:07Coach flight is the man, so make sure you keep it locked in here.
53:10Taylor got a nice, a nice video with him breaking down all of that Gonzo film.
53:14So until then, until next time, take care of yourselves, take care of each other, and
53:18we'll talk to you soon.
53:19Peace out, everyone.
