On the Rock Chalk Podcast, Andy Mitts and Kyle Davis discuss whether the defense for the Kansas Jayhawks was really as bad as it looked against the Texas Longhorns.
Transcript
00:00 The numbers in this game are just deceiving because yes, it's 600 yards, but they, uh,
00:05 I had the note here.
00:07 They had 14 more passing plays and 26 more rushing attempts.
00:12 So like you, they ran the ball 51 times.
00:15 And so, yes, they ran for 336 yards, but when you run at 51 times, again, that just shows
00:20 the time of possession.
00:22 Texas is often was on the field for 20 more minutes in the 95 degree Texas heat than the
00:27 Kansas offense was, you know, I don't care.
00:29 How good your defense is, you are going to be exhausted after that.
00:32 And so I thought the second there, obviously they got a lot of tackles because there was
00:36 a lot of breaking through into the secondary.
00:38 And there was also a lot of, I know we talked about in the live blog, uh, trying to prevent
00:43 the big play.
00:44 So you're kind of giving receivers like Xavier worthy, a little more space underneath.
00:48 And it looked like they had, you know, some separation there, but I thought Austin Booker
00:52 did some nice things and they're obviously, you know, corner a Wheeler.
00:56 That's a, it's a great moment for him to get the interception.
01:00 And when yours is first of the year, but yeah, it wasn't the stats make it look bad.
01:05 There's a lot of, there's just when Texas, when you give it a team with so many NFL players
01:09 like Texas has, and you let them run more than 70 offensive plays and let them be on
01:14 the field for 40 of 60 minutes, they're going to put up a lot of numbers.
01:17 Yeah.
01:18 I mean, that's really what it was like.
01:20 You look at like OJ Burroughs had, I think 13 tackles on the day you had Austin Booker,
01:24 you had Jeremy Robinson, who was getting a bunch of pressure.
01:27 Kansas was doing everything you expect them to do against a team like this in the first
01:30 half.
01:31 It really like the dam finally broke when that fumble happened.
01:35 And then all of a sudden Texas was able to, you know, drive down.
01:38 And I mean, you know, you have two minutes of game time.
01:41 They went off on that and it looked like they were finally going to be able to go ahead
01:43 and get another, I mean, Kansas has scored a touchdown to get within six.
01:47 Then you forced a missed field goal and it looked like Kansas was going to go on another
01:51 long drive and get another score, whether it was a field goal or a touchdown, they fumble
01:55 it.
01:56 Texas comes back immediately, gets a touchdown.
01:57 And then the offense does nothing the rest of the game.
01:59 Like that is a recipe for disaster for a defense that again, has a lot of good guys, has some
02:06 decent top end talent, but does not have the depth or the conditioning with how many people
02:11 that they're actually able to play to go toe to toe with a Texas offense like that all
