00:00 He was left tied up outside a shelter with a note,
00:03 like it was written by a kid.
00:05 I'm Nikki from Road Dogs Rescue,
00:07 and this is Qwerty's story for GeoBeats.
00:09 Someone tied him up overnight and left him there.
00:12 I definitely think that he was cared for
00:14 because he is such a sweet boy,
00:15 and the fact that somebody made a little sign for him,
00:18 it looks like it was made by a kid.
00:20 So it seems like it was probably a family
00:22 that maybe cared about him,
00:24 but then ultimately didn't know how to care
00:26 for his sort of needs going forward.
00:28 The shelter reached out to us
00:30 because they know that we like odd cases.
00:33 The minute I saw him, I was just like,
00:34 "Oh yeah, he's definitely a road dog."
00:36 I took him in personally.
00:38 I brought Qwerty in to foster him
00:40 'cause I wanted to see what his temperament was like
00:42 and what his needs were.
00:43 He's got this short spine syndrome condition,
00:46 and that's what makes him look different to other dogs,
00:49 but it doesn't necessarily affect him
00:51 on a day-to-day level.
00:52 He's actually pretty healthy and happy
00:54 for a dog that looks like it shouldn't be.
00:57 - What you gonna do, Qwerty?
00:59 Hey, what you gonna do, Qwerty?
01:02 - He's a funny-looking little guy.
01:04 I call him the happy hyena
01:05 because he reminded me of a hyena mixed with a frog.
01:09 He loves to chase the ball.
01:10 - What are you guys doing?
01:12 - He'll even try and climb on things,
01:13 but that seems to be a little bit harder
01:15 for him to get the traction to get on a sofa
01:18 or something like that, but he'll give it a go.
01:20 - She's grabbing you out, Qwerty.
01:22 - Never underestimate an underdog.
01:24 Don't underestimate what they can do in their life,
01:26 and don't underestimate what they can bring to your life.
01:29 He's such a happy soul, and he doesn't judge himself,
01:32 so we shouldn't judge him.
01:34 They have much more simple outlook on life.
01:36 I think humans tend to complicate everything.
01:39 They just like, "Hey, I'm enjoying the beach.
01:42 "I'm enjoying my food.
01:43 "I'm enjoying good company."
01:44 Life is sweet.
01:45 He ended up being adopted by this wonderful family.
01:48 I'm in California, and they're in Florida.
01:50 He basically got transported
01:52 from one end of the country to the other
01:54 because we felt it was the right home for him.
01:56 What are you doing?
01:58 Get it off!
01:58 Bye-bye, you old man.
02:01 Bye-bye.
02:02 When people sometimes say to me,
02:03 "How can you foster and let it go?"
02:06 I'm like, "Well, you just eat a lot of chocolate
02:08 "on the day that you're letting them go."
02:09 [Qwerty moans]
02:12 - Look at that coy slice.
02:13 Look at that happy face.
02:14 - Oh, here he comes, too.
02:15 You feel sad, and then you move on to the next one
02:18 because you realize that you're just a stepping stone
02:21 in them having a great life.
02:23 And to me, it's more important that they have a great life
02:26 than I feel a bit sad about letting them go.
