00:00The fictional city of Falkenhayn, where Nazi Germany is starting to fall apart, is the home of a ten-year-old Georgian
00:05who holds Adolf Hitler as his imaginary friend, but doesn't even know how to tie his shoes.
00:10He is a true nationalist and a fanatic of indoctrination of Nazi ideals and wants to help his country during the war,
00:16which is why he joins the Young Volk, a younger division of Hitler's youth, with his friend Jorkie.
00:22He spends the whole weekend in a camp led by Captain Klenzendorf, his deputy Freddy Finkel and Fräulein Ramm,
00:27who is in charge of the German Girls' Alliance.
00:30They get a uniform of the right size and a special uniform before they are led to try out various activities,
00:36such as throwing grenades, digging trenches, reading maps and defending from gas, among other things.
00:41Or at least that's what the boys do.
00:43The girls learn how to bandage wounds, set up beds and how to hire.
00:47Jojo is good at activities such as describing Jews and burning books,
00:52but when it comes to wrestling, he falls over and runs away, attracting the attention of older boys.
00:57When the time comes for the boy to learn how to kill, those teenagers see how insecure Jojo is
01:01and put a bullet in his arm, asking him to show it.
01:05Jojo pretends he's not afraid, but he can't force himself to do it, so he tries to let the bullet go.
01:10However, the teenager grabs the bullet before he runs away and kills him himself,
01:14continuing to laugh at Jojo for his failure.
01:17Since he is frightened, as a small bullet, they start calling him Jojo Rabbit, which serves him and causes him to go into the forest.
01:22While sitting on the root of the tree and crying, the imaginary Hitler appears and we say that rabbits are actually very brave,
01:28every day they go out into the wild to find carrots and must be cunning not to be caught.
01:32Encouraged to be a strong rabbit, Jojo returns to the camp, where Klenzendorf teaches the children how to throw grenades under his supervision.
01:39Jojo passes by him, steals the grenade he holds in his hand and continues to run in the forest,
01:43where he throws the grenade so badly that it bounces off the tree and falls on his feet, exploding in front of his face.
01:49Jojo falls unconscious, but he has a blurry memory of the people who take him to the hospital and visit his mother, Rosie.
01:54Waking up a few days later in his room, the first thing he notices when he gets out of bed is a scratch on his nose,
02:01and the other is a scar on his face, which he discovers by looking in the mirror.
02:04His mother comes to check him out, hugs him and reminds him that she has her, even though his father is gone and his sister Inge is dead.
02:11After finding him to put on his uniform again, Rosie leads Jojo to the seat of Jungvolk, where they find Klenzendorf feeding Finkel.
02:19Klenzendorf is already degraded because of Neymar, but Rosie still hits him with a knee between the legs and a glove on the face,
02:24forcing him to promise that he will give Jojo a job, even if he is not on the field and that he will feel included.
02:30Jojo is tasked with putting up propaganda posters around the city and making calls, which seems to be with great enthusiasm.
02:36One afternoon, while working, he finds his mother rushing to a group of people promised by the posters on the market,
02:41and when he asks Jojo what they did, she replies that they did what they could.
02:45When he returns home later, his mother is gone, and he becomes nervous when he hears the sounds of his sister's room.
02:51He enters the bedroom to investigate and finds a strange mark on the floor where he goes into the wall,
02:55so he puts his knife in it and manages to open the false part of the wall.
02:59Behind him is a space large enough for a person to be pulled in and various objects thrown around.
03:04At the end of that space, he is shocked when he finds a young girl, Elsa Korr, who follows him to her room while screaming and running around the house in fear.
03:11She grabs him when he is at the doorstep and presses him against the wall, showing him that he has his badge and admits that he is a Jew,
03:17but that he is there because Rosie asked him to hide in her house.
03:20If Jojo tells anyone about her, Elsa promises that she will say that he and Rosie helped her, so that they would be killed.
03:27After she returns to her hiding place with his knife, Jojo hurriedly leaves his room and discusses his options with the delusional Hitler.
03:34Concluding that he should negotiate, he grabs a kitchen knife and a pot to protect himself,
03:39then returns to his sister's room and tells Elsa that she should find another place to live.
03:43He is scared again when she surprises him behind his back, takes the kitchen knife and throws it out of the room.
03:48Jojo again talks to the delusional Hitler and concludes that he should push Elsa to feel safe in order to lower his guard.
03:55When Rosie returns in the evening, Jojo tells her that he heard sounds on the porch, but she tells him that they were probably the Stalkers.
04:01After Rosie puts him in bed, he goes to see Elsa to tell her to be more careful, because if something happens, he can't choose her over his son.
04:09He reminds Elsa that as long as there is at least one living person out there, they are losing.
04:13The next day, Jojo goes to the pool to help him with his leg.
04:17He notices that Klenzendorf and Finkel are there and sit close to each other and show fear of Rosie.
04:22After his mother left, Jojo comes to them and asks Klenzendorf what he should do if he finds the Jews.
04:27He is responsible for calling Gestapo, who will kill them, and the one who helped them.
04:31Jojo also asks how a Jew can be recognized at all, to which Klenzendorf says that he does not know and that someone should write a book about it.
04:39After he returns home, Jojo again tries to talk to Elsa.
04:43After he finds out that they are in the wrong position, because neither of them can give up their friend if they do not want trouble,
04:47they say that they will allow her to stay in exchange for information about the Jews so that she could write a book about them.
04:53Elsa accepts and explains that Jews are people like him, but since they do not believe her, they say that they are demons who love money and are allergic to food.
05:01Jojo quickly understands her plan to make him bring her food, and when he begins to explain that the Aryan race is superior and the Jews are weaker,
05:08Elsa grabs him, covers his mouth and shakes him, explaining to him that the Jews have nothing weaker than returning to their hideout.
05:14When Rosie returns for the evening, she burns something in the fireplace before she pours wine and plays music,
05:19she is very happy because the Allies have taken Italy and France is next.
05:23Jojo begins to talk to her because he is against his country, so Rosie interrupts the conversation and tells him to eat.
05:29However, she does not eat, claiming that she is not hungry, and Jojo quickly doubts that she is keeping food for Elsa, so he decides to keep the leftovers for himself.
05:36He thinks that his father would understand that she is here, and how much he wants to see her,
05:39Rosie puts on a manly hat and puts her beard on her face with ash to disgust Jojo, who is talking to her mother.
05:46Using her husband's voice, she also begs him to take care of her, because she gives everything from herself, and then increases the music and forces Jojo to dance with her.
05:53The next day, Jojo Elsa gives a pencil and paper to Elsa, where Jews live and where Jewish women lay their eggs.
05:59Elsa begins to draw, but refuses to answer questions about her family.
06:03However, she tells Jojo about her hostage Nathan, who is fighting in resistance.
06:07The drawing she gives to Jojo is his own portrait, because Jews live there.
06:11Jojo gets an idea for a plan, writes a letter pretending to be Nathan, who breaks up with Elsa and reads it.
06:17She obviously doesn't believe him, but it still hurts when she hears such terrible things about herself with the hostage's name.
06:23She returns to her hideout, and seeing her so upset, Jojo complains about everything
06:27and writes a new letter to Nathan, telling him that it wasn't true in the past and that he still loves her.
06:32Elsa thanks him and asks him to bring more letters in the future.
06:35They play a game in which they try to count as many famous and important people as possible on their side, and Elsa wins when she mentions Jesus.
06:42A little later, Jojo and Rosie go for a walk by the river, and Rosie tells him how it was different in the area,
06:48there were people who danced all the time and enjoyed the romance that Jojo despises.
06:53Rosie also thinks that children shouldn't be involved in politics, but should play and climb trees, and everyone should dance as a sign of freedom.
07:01Jojo doesn't approve of this and leaves on his bike, and Rosie follows him on foot.
07:05When they arrive, they see a truck with soldiers returning home, and they look gloomy and defeated.
07:11Jojo also returns home in a bad mood, so Elsa tries to turn him away with funny stories about her people.
07:17He begins to get used to her and enjoy her company, which is why he is later built by the imaginary Hitler, telling him that the German brain shouldn't be forced.
07:25After Rosie spends some time with Elsa, she tells him that she is glad that she is here and that she sees how she becomes a woman, because she couldn't do that with her daughter.
07:33The next day, Jojo goes to the Young Volk meeting, where he meets Klansmen Dorf and Finkel, as they talk, touching each other's noses, it is obvious that there is tension between them.
07:42Jojo tells them that he writes reports about Jews, but they laugh at him, not believing that this is true.
07:47Klansmen Dorf decides to share some designs with him that he made for his Finkel uniforms, which are very ugly.
07:53Then Jojo gets a new task, that is, he has to collect waste for war effort.
07:58While walking the streets dressed as a robot, Jojo sees his mother cutting small strips against the Nazis, and also meets with Jorki, who is accepted as a soldier.
08:06When Jojo tells him that he caught a Jew, Jorki replies that he saw one in the forest and does not understand what is so terrible about them, that Jojo forces him to think.
08:14As soon as he returns home, he visits Elsa and bows to several naked men he has found, but also reminds her that it is illegal for Nazis and Jews to be friends.
08:22Elsa tells him that he is not actually a Nazi, because she is not in pain, but just a lonely child who is trying to find his place.
08:29They agree not to agree.
08:31After Elsa realizes how dirty she is, Jojo allows her to leave the room and take a bath, even inviting her to go to her sister's.
08:38They get ready for a dinner when someone knocks on the door, and after he returns to his hideout, Jojo opens the door and looks at a group of Gestapo men headed by Herman Dertz.
08:47Immediately behind them, Klansmen Dorf and Finkel arrive, saying that they had to bring Jojo a pamphlet that sounds like an excuse.
08:53Gestapo immediately starts searching the house, looking for suspicious activity, while Dertz asks Jojo why his mother is absent all day and why there is no knife on the uniform.
09:02Elsa then appears wearing Ingi's clothes and pretending to be her.
09:06She tells them that she took the knife because her brother was drinking, so Gestapo goes to look for her room.
09:11Dertz is still suspicious of her, so he looks for her papers, Elsa pulls out Ingi's personal card from the drawer and gives it to Klansmen Dorf, who asks for her date of birth.
09:19Elsa answers correctly, and Klansmen Dorf lets her go, but Dertz gets confused when he sees Jojo in the book with the report.
09:24Gestapo starts listing the book, laughing at all the demonic drawings of the Jew, and while Klansmen Dorf doesn't seem too entertained, Elsa feels pretty upset and betrayed when they find the part where Jojo described all the ways Nathan should die.
09:37Fortunately, they didn't find anything bad, Gestapo leaves, and Klansmen Dorf returns Elsa's personal card, and Jojo his knife.
09:44Elsa discovers that the date on the papers is not the same as she said, which means that Klansmen Dorf helped her all the time.
09:49Jojo points out that no one actually knows that Ingi is dead, so Elsa could pretend that she is and live with them normally, but she is still hurt by the content of the book, so Jojo persuades her that they can't be friends.
10:00Jojo is suspicious of them, because he tries to be friends with Elsa and thinks that she is a good person, so he persuades her to focus on priorities.
10:08While Jojo is eating, Jojo finds Rosy hanging on the hangers at the public market.
10:12With a terrible pain, she grabs her legs and cries like never before, she even tries to tie her shoelace, but she can't.
10:19After watching her body for hours, she returns home with a knife in her hand, accusing Elsa of Rosy's death and preparing her to be beaten for it.
10:26She stops her hand at the last moment and he is only a scratch.
10:29While he starts crying again, Elsa shows mercy and comforts him.
10:33She explains that she always knew that Rosy is a part of the Resistance, even though she doesn't know the details, and Jojo's father also fights for the Resistance, but Rosy told him the opposite, so she wouldn't upset him.
10:42She also admits that her parents were taken to a concentration camp, so they are the only ones who have it.
10:48Jojo starts going out on the street to look for food around the corners and notices how the city is destroyed every day.
10:54They and Elsa start living in a routine, sharing meals and enjoying fake letters from Nathan, which Jojo writes.
11:00One day after noon, the city enters a state of chaos when the Allies start an offensive, taking advantage of the fact that Hitler was killed.
11:07Jojo comes across Jorge, who is carrying some weapons because the army is so eager to send children to the soldiers.
11:12Jojo tells him that the Jew who caught his girlfriend in some way is worried because it is illegal, but Jorge tells him that he met Russians and Japanese and that they are worse than Jews.
11:22Rami finds them, and after Jorge sends them with a gun, Jojo gives him a jacket and a uniform so they wouldn't accidentally shoot him.
11:29Then a bomb explodes in the zone, and Jojo is stunned while he watches everyone fight.
11:34This fight includes children and elderly people, and even Klenzendorfer and Finkel in their torn uniforms.
11:39Jojo is too scared to fight, so he hides in an abandoned building until it's all over.
11:43He comes out after the situation calms down and sees how the Americans take off the Nazi flags and replace them with their glorious victory.
11:50Soviet soldiers catch every Nazi they see, including Ders and the rest of the Gestapo, and when they see Jojo in the window, they catch him too.
11:58He finds Klenzendorfer, among other prisoners, who tells him that he is a good boy and that he should watch his sister before he takes off his jacket, spits on him and calls him a Jew so that the soldiers would let him go.
12:08Jojo can only watch Klenzendorfer taken away for shooting.
12:12On the way home, Jojo finds Jorge, who says that he will go to see his mother to hug her.
12:16When he tells him that Jojo, this girl, can now be free, Jojo is offended, thinks that Elsa is leaving, and quickly returns home.
12:23Elsa decided to tell him that Germany won the war, so she couldn't leave, but after she reads her book and sees the drawings of her mother and son-in-law in the closet, she turns to write another letter from Nathan.
12:34Then Elsa reads it and tells him that she has a plan to pull him out of the building.
12:37Then Elsa finally admits that Nathan died of tuberculosis last year, but that the letters were in TH.
12:43Jojo admits that he loves her romantically, but she knows that she loves him as a brother, which she confirms, so he still wants to help her escape.
12:50The delusional Hitler is disappointed in him for that and tries to convince him to change his mind, but Jojo finally opposes him and throws him out of the window.
12:58Elsa is determined to go out, but Jojo encourages her until she manages to cross the threshold.
13:02At that moment, a car passes by her with an American flag, so Elsa shouts at Jojo because he lied.
13:07When he thinks about what to do next, they decide to dance to celebrate their freedom.
