00:02Today we're working on a drama series from 2008 called The Stoning of Saraya M.
00:10A French-Iranian journalist, Freydoon Sahebian, travels across Iran and his car breaks down.
00:15He waits by the road for a few hours until a small bus arrives and stops to take his car to the nearest village, Kuhpayah.
00:22Zahra sees all of this when she visits a river to dig up some bones and pieces of clothing that were eaten by wolves.
00:28She rushes back to the city and sees Freydoon leaving his car at a local mechanic, Hashem,
00:33who initially didn't want to accept the job, but changed his mind when Freydoon gave him an extra dollar.
00:39Zahra notices that he's holding a tape recorder in his bag and tries to tell him that the village is hiding very dark secrets,
00:45but the city's mullah, Sheikh Hassan, and the city's chief, Ebrahim, interrupt her, calling her crazy and pushing her away.
00:52The two men are noticeably uncomfortable because of Freydoon's presence in their village,
00:56and after they ask him some personal questions, they try to persuade him to have lunch with them,
01:01but Freydoon rejects them and goes to the cafe by himself.
01:04There, Zahra comes to him again and throws a small paper ball containing bones and a map to her house.
01:11Freydoon decides to play a game and visits her, making sure that no one is following him.
01:15After sending the young girl, that is, Nechakin, back home, she makes tea and asks Freydoon to listen to her story,
01:22which he accepts and prepares a tape recorder to record her.
01:25It all started a few weeks ago.
01:27Zahra had a girlfriend, Soraya Manuchehri, who was married to a violent man named Ali.
01:32They have four children together, two boys and two girls, but there is no connection between them.
01:37Ali wants to divorce Soraya so that he can marry a 14-year-old girl, Mehri,
01:42but Soraya won't let him because he can't support the family on his own.
01:46Ali tries to persuade Sheik to talk to her, and when he rejects him,
01:50he threatens to reveal his past to the village as a convict, so Sheik has no choice but to accept it.
01:56Sheik visits Soraya in her house, and at first, unaware that Zahra is nearby and listening to their conversation,
02:02he tries to remind her of her duties as a wife, which, if she can't fulfill, then the best idea is to accept divorce.
02:09Ali will allow her to keep the girls while he takes the boys with him,
02:13and Zahra can keep the house, but this is not enough for them to survive.
02:17Sheik then decides to make another offer.
02:19He can take care of her and her daughters, and while he does that, he can visit Soraya,
02:24and she can be his wife for a while.
02:26At that moment, Zahra enters and kicks him out after yelling at him,
02:30because he behaves like a whore towards her and her daughters.
02:33After he leaves, Zahra asks Soraya about her relationship with Ali,
02:36and her answer is to show her the bridesmaids she leaves on her body whenever she takes what she wants.
02:41A few hours later, while Soraya and her children are eating, Ali returns home and yells at her,
02:46saying that she embarrassed him and made a city smile out of him because she didn't accept divorce.
02:51He starts talking to his two boys about everything they could do if they could leave,
02:56turning them against her because they didn't want a divorce,
02:58and that they didn't even have the shame to mention Mehri in front of their children.
03:02Soraya starts accusing Ali of being a bad husband because he wants to leave her and her daughters,
03:06and that he doesn't care about their lives,
03:08but her oldest son intervenes and starts yelling at her and telling her not to talk to men like that.
03:13Ali orders him to clean the table, and feeling angry at the situation,
03:17Soraya throws the plate on the floor, breaking it into pieces.
03:21When Ali tells her that he owes her money for that, she finally reaches her limit,
03:25so she grabs her daughters and tries to leave the house.
03:28Ali hits her twice, trying to scare her to stay,
03:31but Soraya remains brave and leaves with her daughters to stay with Zahra,
03:35who promises that she will talk to the mayor to get his help.
03:39She thinks that she could earn his favor because he was once in love with her,
03:44and even tried to marry her once.
03:46Their conversation is suddenly interrupted by Hashem,
03:48who comes and asks for Zahra's help with his terribly sick wife,
03:51since the doctor is out of town.
03:53On the way to his house, Zahra sees Ali in his car with another woman,
03:57but for now, she has to focus on Hashem's wife.
04:00Unfortunately, Zahra can't do anything, she's already dead when they get there.
04:04She spends the night preparing for the funeral as tradition requires,
04:07and in the morning, Soraya comes to the rescue,

06:37if he does not accept to be a witness to Soraya's trial.

07:13and hears Ali presenting evidence of Soraya's mistrust.

07:23and Zahra points out that she is not good at being a criminal to people,
07:26but at that moment Hashem comes and tells lies that Ali manipulated.

08:20He comes to apologize, and Soraya's youngest son,
08:23but also the oldest, still hates her and takes her brother away.
08:26Soraya finally breaks down and starts crying.
08:29Zahra tries to offer her the last moment of peace,
08:31combing her hair and singing her a song.
08:34When the time comes for that,
08:36Zahra and Ebrahim walk together in the streets,
08:38giving everything they have to avoid the fierce role of the men
08:40who want to hurt and hit Soraya.
08:42After they reach the place where the event will take place,

10:23Hashem admits that he is crazy and that Ali and Sheik threatened him,

10:48but on the way out of the building, Zahra gives him the tape

10:53The car starts to break down again,
10:55so she stands between him and Gomila
10:57to give him time to force him to leave.
10:59Freydon manages to escape,
11:01regardless of the stone thrown at him,
11:03and Zahra celebrates the fact that the story will reach the whole world.
