BTCC crashes, accidents, collisions, spins from 1990 to 1993 season
Transcript
00:00Now there is Newman with Mike Smith right behind him. Mike Smith closing up and going for it and he hits Newman.
00:07Newman off. Both of them stop. Sittner goes through and two more BMWs and another.
00:1317th to 8th and this is Gerry Marnie chasing Carvel's BMW and off goes the BMW.
00:18He recovers but he's lost four places. He's only got to Goddard now. He's home. He's home.
00:26But he's lost it. Blomquist lost it. God. Sears is through just yards from the flag.
00:33Goes up on the kerb. Marnie goes through. He's touching Forrest and Forrest spins. Forrest spins out.
00:41Chicane. Battle for fourth. Hathaway. Pristo. Newman. And Newman's lost it. Newman's lost it.
00:48Bang. Straight into the new pit wall. Well, poor Mike Newman.
00:54And at the complex there's Baird and Whale and there's a spin. There's contact and a spin.
00:59Both off the course. Nick Whale continues. So it's just into the chicane now.
01:07And there's a crash. Collision. Luby hits Sittner. Both BMWs spin. Jeff Allum goes through into second place.
01:16Sittner and Luby recover. Now he's making no impression at all on Tim Harvey and Andy Rouse.
01:22Into the left-hander and Brooklands goes. And Rouse loses it. Rouse spinning.
01:27Rob Crammett goes up into second position. Sean Walker to third. It's all happy.
01:31And so's Nick Whale. Spins off. Onto the grass. But he'll probably regain and get going again.
01:39There's another BMW in front of him. Out round Ireland and this is where he's onto the grass.
01:45It's damp. There is no adhesion. His tyres won't hold. The windscreen wiper's going.
01:50Here comes the tyre wall and Zonkey's into it. And that's Cleland. Cleland locks up.
01:56He's done it again. John Cleland's done it again. And he's made a real job of it this time.
02:03Well, lucky he's got a reverse gear. Backwards onto the track. Lining up the car. Now the tyres are locked up.
02:13No way he's going to stop. In for the second time. Here it is from the outside.
02:20And you can see straight in. And here's the Swedish woman driver, Netan Lindgren.
02:27Netan Lindgren. And Gerry Marnie's lost it. Gerry's certainly having an exciting 1990 one way or another.
02:34In car again with Gerry Marnie. Clark ahead. Into Stowe. Out of it. Clark's lost it.
02:41Is Marnie going to hit him? Mercifully no. Clark goes into the sand trap.
02:48And that's John Clark. Off goes John Clark. Spins right off at Surtees.
02:54He was doing 90 miles an hour. He's up alongside the white Sierra. He's going to retake the lead.
02:59No, he's not. He's lost it. Yes, he's lost it. And that is just less grip.
03:04So, Rob Gravitt leads. Tim Harvey rejoins second. And you can see the way the Ford Sierra Cosworth stride away from the box hall.
03:12They've got 550 horsepower and Amato's lost it. Amato's lost it.
03:16Through goes Cleland. Through goes Sidner. Through goes Allen. He's passed though as they go down to Westfield.
03:23And Cleland goes through again. Middle host onto the grass. Sidner goes through and Middle host has lost it.
03:30Looby goes by. Allen goes by. Lindgren goes by.
03:34Onto the chicane. Mark Hales. Mark Hales and Nick Whale. He nerfs Nick Whale.
03:39Pushes him right off the course. Up onto the kerbing.
03:43They come out of the right-hander and down to the club chicane for the last time.
03:47And Chris Hodges is closing. He's trying to take her on the outside. And he spins. Tries too hard.
03:53Oerstreich goes up. Steve Soper ahead. Up to Maggots Curve. 130 miles an hour.
03:58Down to Becketts. And there's Palmer on the left. He's turning in. Thump. He's hit Andy Rouse.
04:03Off. Off goes the Toyota. What a start for his first Toyota race.
04:09They turn in. And Harvey's lost it. Tim Harvey spins. And that's what Middle host Harry...
04:16This was the last lap and he's lying fourth.
04:22Disastrous end for Palmer and his bad luck was set to continue.
04:26Allum in third position. Behind him is Bellman. There's an off. It's Palmer. Jonathan Palmer and Tim Har...
04:33Harvey looks as though he's got a clear car length ahead of Palmer as he turns in. Palmer thumps him.
04:39Spins Harvey. And Harvey now. This is from Jonathan Palmer's car.
04:44Harvey on the left. They're into riches. Well, you can see what happens.
04:48And Tim is going to be very, very unhappy with that.
04:55Right into Russell. There's a very tight hairpin braking. And Jonathan's right up alongside him.
05:00And he's done it again. He's hit Netton Lindgren. Spins off.
05:04Well, what an absolute disaster for Jonathan Palmer and Netton.
05:09Spins his rear wheels.
05:12Oh dear, he's not at all happy. It's not his day.
05:16Oh, dear me. And there's Netton. I bet she's not best pleased either.
05:21She certainly doesn't look as though she thinks it was her fault.
05:25Oh, this is going to be... And she doesn't. Bell hath no fury like a woman rammed.
05:32But the crowd loved it.
05:36Thank you and goodbye.
05:38The two cars at the back, Netton on the right, Jonathan on the left.
05:42And he just lost it on the braking. Slid into Netton's car.
05:45They both spin off. Both out of the race. Both the works BMW.
05:49Seeing off the championship leader, Will Hoy.
05:51On a showery day, most of the field had gambled on dry weather slick tyres.
05:56And the new race leader, Cleland, was Cleland himself.
05:59A gentle pace, headlights blazing, but he was completely out of control.
06:05The others did their best to limit the damage.
06:07Jeff Allum had also gone straight on at Brooklands.
06:10And rejoined just as Hoy was making his very rapid exit.
06:15And rejoined just as Hoy was making his very rapid exit.
06:19Replay. We're with Frank Sittler.
06:21He's coming up to try and take number 33, Gary Ailes.
06:24And he hits him. Just hits the rear and spins the Toyota around.
06:28And goes through at 22 in the BMW.
06:30And somebody is off. That's Nick Whale. He's going to be hit.
06:34Now his teammate, Nick Baird, just misses him.
06:38Well, that was a very close thing.
06:41Spin turn by Nick Baird and he's back.
06:44But there is oil on the track and that is very dangerous indeed.
06:48Indeed, Mark Hales goes off in the midst of Michy Gallant.
06:51Into the right-hander of McLean's Andy Rouse leading.
06:54And they're off.
06:56And it's carnage.
06:59They've hit oil.
07:01Alan McClelland into Whales' car.
07:03Super goes through. Harvey is off.
07:05Keith Oda goes through and just misses Harvey.
07:09And Tim Harvey manages to get away.
07:12It was an absolute miracle, but nobody was hurt.
07:17Now, it's amazing that Jeff doesn't want the collar on
07:20because just watch his head in this replay.
07:22Car on the left.
07:25Just look at that.
07:27Quite incredible that he's quite all right.
07:32And so is John Clelland.
07:35But Soper's fighting back. He's there and he's hit him.
07:38Soper hits Harvey and he's off.
07:40Tim Harvey off. He's sliding, sliding, sliding along the grass.
07:45And the rescue unit is out. Oh dear, that's bad news.
07:49It's Lawrence Bristow.
07:52And this is with Gary Ailes' car now, the stationary one.
07:55And Bristow goes off onto the grass and really thumps the tyre wall.
08:00As the rest were warming their tyres.
08:02Sittner never saw him coming.
08:06The kind of accident that had been on the cards for a long time.
08:09Sittner was understandably furious, but at least he got going,
08:12while Ailes was out for good.
08:17Into the race and Rouse was in the thick of things again,
08:20this time against Clelland, coming off second best.
08:28Soper and Gravett taking advantage as well.
08:32Soper leading, Hoy second, Palmer third and challenging,
08:36closing up on the BMW in front of him as they go into the right-hander.
08:39And Hoy turns in and Palmer's hit him. Palmer hits Hoy.
08:42Hoy spins out. We're with Hoy now.
08:45Jonathan Palmer sees an opportunity, dives into the gap,
08:48just touches the back of Hoy's BMW, which spins out.
08:52Palmer goes through.
08:55And now, here's a replay from Harvey's point of view.
08:58Jonathan Palmer ahead. You can see he's just touched the back of Hoy's car.
09:02And he may have felt that as Clelland was behind Hoy,
09:06and Jonathan Palmer has got something wrong with the car,
09:09desperately peering around to try to find it.
09:12And, oh my goodness, a terrific roll there.
09:15That was Geoff Wilson's Vauxhall Belmont, that's all I can tell you.
09:19And incredibly and thankfully, Geoff is perfectly alright.
09:24Walks away from the car. 18 is Godfrey Hall,
09:27and Wilson has only got three wheels on the ground when Hall's BMW hits him,
09:32nudges him into a terrific double roll,
09:36smashes the car to pieces, and amazingly, Wilson is perfectly OK.
09:43130 miles an hour as they approach Druids, the right-hander.
09:48Clelland. Hoy's going through.
09:51Rouse is going through, and Clelland's lost it.
09:54He's into the Armco. They're surging past him.
09:57Now, this is 130 miles an hour here, down through the gearbox,
10:01into the right-hander. Now, watch the steering wheel.
10:05They've tried, he's all over the place.
10:08Hoy goes through, Rouse goes through, into the Armco.
10:11On come the alternator and oil pressure lights.
10:15Down the avenue, chasing Rob Gravitt at 130 miles an hour.
10:19He's going through. Oh, up, up, up again.
10:22He's hit him twice, but he's passed.
10:25Let's have a look. Replay.
10:27Now you see Sunder hits the Peugeot at the back, then at the front.
10:31Matthew Neal follows through and straight into us.
10:34At the camera goes Rob Gravitt in the Nissan Primera,
10:38completing the lap, chasing Flux and Neal, and they make contact.
10:41And Neal spins in front of everybody else.
10:45There's no collision, and he's kept going.
10:48There's the battle for the lead ahead.
10:50Tim has won five times this year.
10:53Donington, Knock Hill, Pembrey, Brands twice, and he wants a sixth win.
10:58And there's a spin. It's Soper and Leslie, both of them off.
11:02And Soper spins, two complete spins.
11:06And here's a replay of the Soper spin, 80 miles an hour.
11:10Get ready for a spin. Here it is.
11:13That's once. This is twice.
11:16This is Rob Gravitt, fourth place, the leaders ahead.
11:19And it is very close, and there's somebody off.
11:22In fact, there's two people off.
11:24And Jeff Allum's one of them. He's gone straight into Sutton's BMW.
11:28That's Chris Nissen going into the tar wall.
11:31It was a race full of spectacular exits, none more costly than Allum's.
11:37Well, it leaves, then.
11:39The two Toyotas together, round Westfield.
11:43And they're off! Both of them off!
11:46Well, incredible! Both the Toyotas off, and the rest stream through.
11:51Wow!
11:53And Andy Rouse puts up his thumb, I'm OK.
11:56Oh, dear, these two are teammates, Will Hoy and Andy Rouse.
12:00And Andy Rouse's body language says rage and fury.
12:04Into Westfield. The two Toyotas run wide.
12:07They're almost touching.
12:09I think they are touching as they go into the second part of the right-hander.
12:12And all of a sudden they snap to the left.
12:15And it is an absolute miracle they stayed on the grass as the rest streamed through.
12:22Neither of them touching the tarmac.
12:29And here is how Andy Rouse saw it.
12:32Well and ahead.
12:34Now there is Hoy on the right.
12:37They're drifting left. And they are off!
12:40Slam-bang at 120 miles an hour.
12:44Neither of them hurt. Incredible!
12:50Tire smoke. We've lost it.
12:53Out! Out! Out!
12:56As the armcoat mashes the Toyotas.
13:01But it was quite a heavy impact, but mainly deflected along the barriers.
13:05I hit once on the front and once on the rear.
13:08And both cars ended up within 20 yards of each other.
13:11So it was one of those racing incidents.
13:13I mean, you never wish it to happen, but it did.
13:16It came head-on to the traffic.
13:18Middlehurst just came straight into me at 80 miles an hour.
13:24It's getting ridiculous. It's getting like dodgem cars.
13:28It's the first lap. They're crazy.
13:31Now, this is Keith O'Daw, Andy Middlehurst, Miss Antigone and Bailey in the Toyota Carina.
13:36He's attacking. He's going to try and go through on the left.
13:39But he's hit the Toyota. Bailey spins out.
13:43And Harvey goes up into 7th place as the unfortunate Julian.
13:47And here's how it happened. It's Rob Kravitz.
13:50Rob Kravitz hits Matthew Neal's BMW. It spins out.
13:54Well and second. And this was how Allem and Rouse resolved their contest for third.
14:02VIRGIN ROAD
14:04Virgin Road moves across to the right to Blanc Flellon.
14:07And he hits Menuh. He's hit Menuh.
14:10And Rouse has passed all three of them. He's gone up into second.
14:13And hello, that is Torquil Tiring going backwards for Christmas.
14:17Rejoining over the grass.
14:19And there's some rough stuff in the middle.
14:22Gravig off to the right.
14:24Ray Bell's gone off to the left.
14:26Flellon leads into Redgate. Harvey is second.
14:29This is Pico Door contesting the same bit of road as Bobby Verdon Road.
14:33And the door comes off worse, dropping down to 14th.
14:36Verdon Road fares better across the grass.
14:39Leslie wasn't done. And in this aggressive attempt to retake the place,
14:43he only hastened his own retirement from the race.
14:51Leslie thought that all meant that his race didn't last too long.
14:56It was a gentle roll, but it was enough to bring out the red flags and stop the race.
15:01Leslie was able to extricate himself quite rapidly.
15:05The white BMW is that of Colin McRae, dominating British rallying.
15:09And here with Matthew Neal in his sights,
15:11showing a straightforward approach to race ground.
15:14Others not so fortunate, Pico Door and Bobby Verdon Road.
15:20He's going up on the inside.
15:23And he hits Matthew Neal's BMW.
15:26Spins number 12 out.
15:29Sugden is catching an edge. Off goes James K, number 11.
15:32And he is not the first to overcome things on the 100-mile-an-hour spin from the Toyota.
15:38And there's another spinner. It's Matthew Neal's BMW M3.
15:42Oh, here's what happened.
15:44Sugden, Matthew Neal behind him.
15:46Neal too close. Touches the back of Sugden's BMW.
15:50Spins it out of the way and up to 9th place.
15:54James K, Walker, Sugden.
15:56And Sugden hits Walker's BMW.
15:59Pushes him out of the way. Up to 13th place.
16:02Sean Walker staggers backwards.
16:04He's standing for it. He's still for it.
16:06He hit him. Leslie out of the grass.
16:09And he's catching Leslie.
16:11Top corner. Super goes for third.
16:13He's right up alongside the box.
16:15He's passed it. He's spinning. He's lost it.
16:19He's been hit. Somebody's hit him.
16:21It's Rob Kravitz. Peugeot has hit Steve Sofa.
16:24And he's bearing. Sofa's OK.
16:27And here is how Rob Kravitz joins.
16:29Sofa on the left. Leslie on the right.
16:31They collide. Sofa holds his line.
16:34Spins. Leslie.
16:37And Hoigo.
16:38Tim Harvey is leading the championship again.
16:41Fantastic.
16:42But John Cleland is attacking Sofa.
16:45He's up on two wheels. Sofa holds his line.
16:47He's pushed right out to the right.
16:49He attacks again as they go to the right.
16:51And they both spin. They're both out.
16:54Sofa and Cleland, both out of the race.
16:58Two very determined chargers, each refusing to yield.
17:02And they've both paid the penalty.
17:04John Cleland, utter dejection.
17:07I just have to say, the man chopped me a couple of times
17:10and he runs into me.
17:11It takes me straight into barriers.
17:12I mean, what are we doing here?
17:13Is this stock car racing or is this motorsport?
17:15He might get away with that in Germany,
17:16where he might be Mr. Superstar.
17:18But this is clean. The man's an animal.
17:20Now we're in car with Rob Kravitz
17:22and it's Watts, his master, in front.
17:24And Patrick nearly loses it.
17:26And out goes Bobby Verdon-Roe's Toyota.
17:29And this is just the first lap.
17:31And only halfway through the first lap,
17:33the BMWs were in control.
17:35The rest were not.
17:36Exit Keith O'Daw.
17:38The violence of Eugene O'Brien's attack on O'Daw,
17:41well, that's best viewed from Will Hoy's Toyota.
17:44But Verdon-Roe was having an eventful start.
17:47And so, too, was Winn-Kersey.
17:55It's a narrow track at the start.
17:57Winkelhoff leans away. Watts is second.
17:59Sofa's coming up fast.
18:01They're going down the ridges.
18:02And it's off! Bang, bang!
18:04It's chaos!
18:05Cars off everywhere.
18:07Now, surely they'll have to stop the race.
18:10Tim Harvick's factory in the Renault.
18:12It's Sofa, and he's in trouble.
18:14And that's Patrick Watts.
18:16It's carnage at Snetterton.
18:19And Winn-Kersey's Nissan looks as though it's hit something,
18:22but they're racing on.
18:24Keith O'Daw in the Nissan got a nudge into Allum's Vauxhall,
18:28and the rest just stacked up behind
18:30or took avoiding action as best they could.
18:32The most heavily involved behind Allum
18:34was the red Team Dynamics BMW of Matthew Neal.
18:38It was hard to apportion blame,
18:40and not having a staggered start on such a narrow track didn't help,
18:43but didn't deserve to be spun into the path of the bulk of the field,
18:47including the accelerating Matthew Neal.
19:06So this was the first attempt to start the race.
19:09Matthew from the back of Winkelhock's car as it surged into the lead,
19:12Allum off the track, the back half of the field would go no further.
19:16But the front three rows battle on until the second corner.
19:19Patrick Watts gets out of shape,
19:21forces Sofa onto the grass before totally losing it himself.
19:26They turn in.
19:27Leslie's very close.
19:29He drifts wide, turns in again.
19:31Bang, that's it.
19:32He's hit, he's hit.
19:34Off he goes.
19:35Look at the mud through the windscreen.
19:37He pushes the sequential gear stick forward,
19:39but he's stalled the engine.
19:41You see the light come on, he's got it going again.
19:43He's a seer.
19:44Don't forget David Leslie is behind him.
19:46Kellen goes wide.
19:47He's hit by Leslie.
19:48The back swings out.
19:50Dirt all over the windscreen.
19:51He's spinning all the time.
19:53He tries to get the car in gear.
19:55Now, can Winkelhock, number 22, regain the lead?
19:59No, he can't.
20:00Off he goes.
20:03It's brake hard.
20:05And there's somebody off.
20:06Great cloud of dust.
20:08They go through into the old hairpin.
20:10Oh, my goodness.
20:11That's Keith O'Doar's Nissan,
20:13and it's gone straight over the cat's fencing.
20:15Well, now we're looking back from Andy Rouse's car.
20:18This is a replay, and that's Keith O'Doar's Nissan.
20:21Turns left, he's lost it.
20:22He's doing about 120 miles an hour,
20:25and he hits the bank.
20:26He somersaults over the fencing.
20:28Look at that.
20:30That is a really big one.
20:33And here is a replay from O'Doar's car.
20:36Look, he's lost it over the grass,
20:38and turns right over.
20:40You saw blue sky at the bottom of your picture,
20:42and that's him landing, and the marshals running.
20:45Second row, David Leslie and Keith O'Doar,
20:47who hadn't had the best of luck in the season so far,
20:50and was returning to the circuit where,
20:52at the end of last season,
20:53he had an enormous piece of luck.
20:57This was in the Toka shootout,
20:59and the luck was surviving this crash unscathed.
21:02O'Doar's Nissan.
21:03He's pressing Watts and Hoy ahead of him.
21:05There's the Mazda, and Hoy's gone off.
21:09Now, here's a replay.
21:10Look in the top right corner
21:11and see what happened to Will Hoy when he went off.
21:15There's the Toyota across the grass,
21:17into the barrier,
21:18and Alan Menu in the Renault retakes the place from David Leslie.
21:22And there's a spin.
21:24That is Ian Cairns' Vauxhall.
21:26Cleland in front,
21:27and Soper is really charging
21:29to try and catch the Vauxhall and get past it.
21:32Into the avenue, round Cascades, down to Forky.
21:34He's going off! He's going off!
21:36Straight into the tyre wall!
21:38Now, why on earth did that happen?
21:40That's not like Steve Soper.
21:42Something must have broken, surely.
21:44And here's a replay.
21:46Looking back at Soper's car from Cleland's,
21:49Soper turns in, tries to,
21:51goes straight off across the grass,
21:53into that tyre wall.
21:55And Alan takes third position.
21:57Now, from Steve Soper's point of view.
21:59Watch his hands,
22:00calm reaction on the wheel,
22:02and watch our cameraman as we head straight towards him.
22:06Bump!
22:08He's a runner.
22:10Matthew Neal.
22:12And Nidel ahead is attacking Harvey for eighth position
22:15into Nickerbrook.
22:17They turn in,
22:18and off goes Nidel!
22:20Off goes Nidel.
22:21He's spun to a standstill.
22:23Now, here's a replay.
22:24Watch Tiff Nidel on the left.
22:27Harvey goes through,
22:28Nidel turns in,
22:30and Neal hits him at the back.
22:32Halston's.
22:33Burton Rowe leads Nuttall for seventh.
22:35Burton Rowe in the Toyota,
22:37and into the tyre wall.
22:38Nuttall goes through,
22:40and he's got a tyre jammed under the front of his car.
22:44First, second, and third in their contest,
22:46and Menu is off!
22:47He was fifth,
22:49so that's both the Renaults out.
22:51There'd be decisive action among the privateers
22:53This was Alex Portman and Ian Khan.
22:57And John Cleland went out of the race at Druids.
23:04Especially frustrating for Cleland,
23:06as the finishing positions in race one
23:08would decide the grid for race two.
23:10Up front, Leslie had recovered from his bad start.
23:13He's passed Winkelhoff,
23:14and forces the leader, Hoy, into a mistake,
23:17coming out of 30.
23:24The Acuria cost man felt duly aggrieved,
23:27but no disciplinary action was deemed necessary.
23:30And here are the leaders.
23:31Winkelhoff, Soper, Hoy.
23:33We're with Winkelhoff, and he's going off!
23:35He's going off!
23:36Straight into the Armco.
23:38Donner and Blitzen, says Winkelhoff,
23:41and that's his race over.
23:42No points for him.
23:49And up there, there's a collision.
23:51Two BMWs.
23:52It's Alex Portman and Matthew Neal,
23:54and they're from the same team.
23:56We're with Portman.
23:57There's Neal getting away.
24:00And they spin turn together.
24:02Now, we're with Portman.
24:03There's Matthew Neal ahead.
24:05He's spinning, and there's just absolutely nowhere
24:08for Alex Portman to go.
24:09It certainly wasn't his fault.
24:11It looks as though he's paid the penalty.
24:14Number 79 is Leslie,
24:16and it's Matthew Neal again.
24:19Number 13 in the BMW.
24:21Off, and right behind the Nissan is the Vauxhall.
24:24And Winkelhoff, he's going for it again.
24:26And Hoy's off!
24:27Hoy's off!
24:28Straight into the tyre barrier.
24:30He was being pushed too hard.
24:32Now, here's a replay from Winkelhoff's car.
24:35Out of certies, into clearways,
24:37onto the grass, into the tyre wall.
24:40That's it.
24:41Thank you very much.
24:42Good afternoon.
24:45Getting close, and a contact again.
24:47Another BMW.
24:48Number 11 this time.
24:50It's Ray Bell.
24:52Going round the left-hander.
24:54And that's Jeff Allen on the left.
24:56Jeff Allen's hit his team-mate.
24:58He's hit Allen's Vauxhall.
25:01Here it is.
25:02Tiffany Dale's Nissan.
25:03He dives into a gap that just isn't there.
25:06And he's not going to be flavour of the month at Renault.
25:08I can tell you that.
25:09Out goes Tim Harvey.
25:11Grand Prix driver Julian Bailey is flying.
25:13He's attacking his team-mate Will Hoy.
25:15In fact, he's really attacked him.
25:17That's it.
25:18Off goes Will Hoy.
25:19Skating to a standstill on his roof.
25:21It's a good thing Will's strapped in.
25:23The car upside down is a Toyota,
25:26with Will Hoy crawling out of it.
25:28A pretty bemused Will Hoy, I should think.
25:30He's lucky to have got away with that.
25:34And he walks away perfectly okay from the look of it.
25:37And here's another one.
25:38Tim Harvey hits Alex Portman's BMW,
25:41and Tim rolls it too.
25:46Hoy on the left, Bailey on the right.
25:49Hoy turns in.
25:50Bailey's on a collision course.
25:52Nothing he can do about it.
25:53On two wheels goes Hoy's Toyota.
25:55Slides off on the roof.
25:57Broken windscreen.
25:58Hoy hanging upside down in his harness.
26:01Frees himself and gets out of the car.
26:04Now, here's a replay from Hoy's point of view.
26:06Turns in.
26:07Crash. Bang.
26:08He's over.
26:09Upside down.
26:11It's Steve Soper.
26:12He was in second place.
26:14He's out.
26:15Now, what has happened?
26:16Oh, that's what's happened.
26:17He's gone off.
26:18I don't know why.
26:19Now, this is a view from Soper's car.
26:22Replay.
26:23Let's see.
26:24Maybe he touched O'Doar's Nissan.
26:25Anyway, he's gone off onto the grass in the biggest possible way.
26:28He's hit the arco.
26:29Look at that debris all over the place.
26:31And there go Radish, Twinklehawk and Leslie
26:34as John Clelland finishes sixth.
26:36And here's a battle for seventh
26:37between Menuh and Donnedale.
26:40And collision.
26:41Menuh spins off.
26:42Now, is he out like Harvey?
26:44No, he's not.
26:45He rejoins.
26:46But then came a sequence of incidents
26:48that would force the stoppage of this first race.
26:50Bobby Verdon-Roe goes off,
26:52possibly after contact with Winn-Percy.
26:54A few yards up the track, though,
26:56there's more emphatic contact.
26:58Winn-Percy's Nissan collected head-on
27:01by Ian Kahn's Cavalier.
27:03And to add to the drama,
27:05Steve Soper tangling with Radisic.
27:07Soper would finish out of the points.
27:09A major blow to his championship prospects.
27:13I thought the quarter was mine.
27:15Obviously, Ford thought it was his.
27:17But the result was I came off well.
27:19Nigel Mansell pulling away.
27:21And now Soper's up into fourth place.
27:23Nadell's down to fifth
27:24as they come through the Elk cabin.
27:25And Mansell sideways.
27:26The Mondeo fishtailing.
27:27He's off again.
27:28Nadell hits him.
27:29And Nigel Mansell thunders into the barrier.
27:31A very big accident indeed.
27:33The Ford Mondeo lies absolutely shattered
27:36by the side of the road.
27:38Coming through the Elk cabin.
27:39Steve Soper in fourth place.
27:41He clips the kerb out ahead of him.
27:42Mansell's already got it sideways.
27:44The back steps out.
27:45Mansell looks like he's got it under control.
27:47And then it spears off to the left.
27:48Tiffany Dell has nowhere to go.
27:49He hits Mansell,
27:50who slides across the grass into the barrier
27:52just in front of the bridge parapet
27:54down at Starkey's Bridge.
27:55The car then spins round again
27:57into the middle of the road,
27:58just missing the Peugeots of Dave Coyne and Rob Gravitt.
28:01A different angle.
28:02Mansell running wide onto the kerbs
28:04on the outside of the road.
28:05Now, by that stage,
28:06it looks like he's under control.
28:07He spears off to the left.
28:08Needell has nowhere to go but into the side of him.
28:10And Mansell clips the barrier
28:12in front of the bridge parapet.
28:14And he bounces then back onto the tarmac.
28:17He locks his rear wheel.
28:18The car's sideways.
28:19Opposite lock.
28:20It's on the kerbs, waiting for control.
28:22Soper goes through.
28:23He's flipped Needell.
28:24He's off.
28:25And a huge impact from Nigel Mansell.
28:28Very still inside the car.
28:30Steamed smoke.
28:32Look at that damage.
28:33Look at that damage.
28:34And fire.
28:35Will I break this?
